Over the past few expansions, the identity of the final boss has been shrouded in mystery until the final patch. In the
Shadowlands
group interview with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, he spoke a bit more about the identity of the final boss for the expansion.

While the last few expansions have ended with surprising final bosses, often tying into the next expansion (Garrosh in Mists, Argus in Legion, N'Zoth in Battle for Azeroth, Gul'dan in Warlords). At this point it seems pretty clear in who the final boss in
Shadowlands
will be, but Ion confirmed we'll fight the Jailer at the end of the expansion:
Honestly, it's almost the opposite of a challenge (having the identity of the final boss public at the start). It's almost an easier way to tell a story and set up an expansion with a very clear theme, harkening back to the Wrath or Cataclysm/Deathwing days. We didn't openly talk about the end boss for some recent expansions because it wouldn't have made sense at the time, or it would have given away story spoilers and twists. For example, in Warlords of Draenor, if you were told you'd fight Archimonde at the end, it would have been a head-scratcher. But here, there is a major titan plus plus level antagonist that we are facing, and there are major steps in our journey to undercover the nature of the jailer's plan and put together the forces to have a chance against him. That story will wend its way through all of Shadowlands and our content updates, until we ultimately do get a chance to face the Jailer.
In addition to simply knowing the identity of the final boss of the expansion, we also have fascinating description of the Jailer's power level as "Titan Plus Plus," strongly implying he'll be a force to reckon within the cosmology of Azeroth. Other recent interviews have throw around the term "The Pantheon of Death" (
which we did a full feature on
!) and Oribos has strong Titan elements as well, so it will be exciting to learn about characters whose strength can rival that of the Titans, and how the greater cosmology of the Warcraft universe might unfold.
It was often unclear during
Battle for Azeroth
what our end goal was, as the Old Gods threat only became apparent in the final patch, as most of the expansion we were engaged in the Fourth War between Alliance and Horde. Shdaowlands is shaping up to be a more-straightforward expansion, with the Jailer a clear villain looming over the entire story. There still seems to be room for twists and turns however, as Sylvanas' motives still aren't quite clear and players keep hoping for Arthas to make an appearance. With so much of the cosmology chart still left unexplored, not to mention new characters with as much powers as the Titans, we could learn some truths about Azeroth that could set the foundations for future expansions.
