Shadowlands Healer Throughput Analysis in Mythic Castle Nathria - Patch 9.0.5
During the Patch 9.0.5 PTR, we tried to provide context to class changes from our class guide writers so you'd know what to expect once Patch 9.0.5 launched. As a followup, we'll now review initial Warcraftlogs raid statistics to determine the actual ramifications of these changes. Specifically for this article we'll analyze Healer balance in
during the first two weeks of Patch 9.0.5 and compare it to healer statistics from just prior to the patch.

The purpose of this article is to give perspective on the state of Healer balance for
in Shadowlands Season 1 for Patch 9.0.5 using live statistical data.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
Performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
Class balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Patch 9.0.5.
Healing statistics are especially volatile due to the variations in healing during progression versus farm. Underhealing, taking excessive damage, or sandbagging are all strategies that tend to become more prevalent for healer parsing during farm content.
Raid healer composition will have a large effect on overall throughput. (ie. 3 Discipline Priests in a single raid)
As such, these statistics should not be taken as an accurate view of what healing future content would look like. Instead, they should be taken as a brief look at how the Patch 9.0.5 changes affected healing
As always, healer throughput is only one metric for Healer balance. It does not take into account utility toolkits, damage output, or your specific raid's needs. High throughput does not necessarily equate to the best healer and raid statistics do not necessarily directly translate to Mythic+ performance.

is probably the most important encounter to analyze and also comes with a fair mix of incoming damage patterns. There may be some variation in healing depending on how guilds prioritize certain healer specs for each
phase. Healers accompanying tanks tend to do more healing simply due to the added incoming tank damage.

, we actually did see a fair shakeup in healer throughput rankings for
. Where previously it was lower-middle of the pack, Restoration Druid has skyrocketed as the premier throughput healer in
. Other throughput oriented healers like Mistweaver Monk and Restoration Shaman have seen a bit of a bump in the rankings but not quite to the extent as Restoration Druid. While these increases are partially attributed to
Patch 9.0.5 class changes
, the sizable nerfs to Discipline are also indirectly responsible.
For some context as to why we're seeing the above statistics, we've asked our Healer Class Writers to give more input about how the Patch 9.0.5 changes have affected their specs and why this may or may not correlate to representation in
With 9.0.5, Restoration Druids received a ~12% buff to
and a ~8% buff to
equating to a roughly 4-6% throughput increase depending on the fight. Combine this with substantial nerfs to Discipline Priests, a farm environment where underhealing is prevalent, and a Mythic+ meta that has allowed for some Restoration Druid growth in raid and it's sorta the perfect storm to enable Restoration Druids to excel right now in Mythic
. Normally we're hailing our Holy Paladin and Discipline Priest overlords, a trend that stagnated the healing meta throughout all of BFA, now we're on top. To say this a welcome breath of fresh air would be a severe understatement.
Will it last? Well, unfortunately it's hard to say at this point. Without a 9.1 PTR and no direct communication from the devs, it's really anyone's guess. We're not so far ahead of other healers that you'll see 4 Restoration Druids in a raid, especially when you consider that we still lack a raid-wide damage reduction cooldown and have less than stellar passive damage contributions both of which tend to be highly valued in progression raiding. But that hasn't prevented some players from being apprehensive about the changes or to start preparing themselves for a potential 9.1 nerf. I wouldn't worry too much regardless. Enjoy it while it lasts however long that may be. Dust off your old Restoration Druids and dive into
; there's a ton of fun to be had.
As for representation we've always maintained a relatively sizable population being one of the most popular of the 3 least popular healers. But at the absolute higher ends of progression raiding we've fallen off a lot. We just don't bring the most valuable utility and with no additional throughput there were few reasons to ever to bring a Restoration Druid when there was a more valuable alternative. Now with this buff, we're already seeing an increase in the number of Restoration Druids healing the toughest bosses of
. Restoration Druids are still unlikely to unseat any of healing trinity of Restoration Shaman, Discipline Priest, and Holy Paladin in terms of popularity, especially once we return to progression healing in Patch 9.1 with the Sanctum of Domination; however, it's nice to feel like a little less of a detriment to our raid for playing a tree.
Mistweavers received minor changes in 9.0.5 and as such saw minor differences in their overall place in the rankings on WCL. We had the cost of
reduced to 3.8% of base mana and
reduced to 1.8% of base mana. This is a minor shift in mana consumption for Mistweavers, and translates to roughly 200 HPS depending on how much you utilized
. This is a very minor increase and doesn’t materially change the overall power of the class.
In terms of HPS output, monks are generally underrepresented when it comes to Warcraft Logs. Mistweaver can produce solid healing, however, in terms of community, Mistweavers are not widely sought after. We do not have the strong damage reduction cooldown of Discipline or Restoration Shaman, and we do not have the high DPS Holy Paladin brings. This leads to there being a total of 250 Public Parses for the final 4 bosses of Castle Nathria for Mistweavers as of March 18th. This is contrasted with 750+ parses for Discipline, Paladin, and Restoration Shaman on Sire Denathrius alone. So while Mistweavers can produce comparable or even better healing output than other classes, we suffer a compounding issue of community perception and lack of player population.
In 9.0.5 there have been relatively minor changes to Paladin's overall HPS. The primary change was the mana cost increase of
, which has shifted things slightly making it possible to run out of mana. But it has ultimately had a negligible impact on Paladins outside of occasionally needing a mana potion. The largest change to Paladin HPS in 9.0.5 was simply the nerf(s) to Discipline Priests; Paladins and Priests tend to overlap cooldowns often due to
’s 1min cd and
’s 2min cooldown, meaning there is a bit more healing that needs to be when a priest uses
Overall Paladins are represented well in Castle Nathria due to their high overall raw HPS. The numbers in total may be potentially lower than possible as paladins do not scale as well into farm (without under healing), and a large portion of cooldowns such as
going into overhealing. Some paladins have also taken to doing obscenely large amounts of damage for farm bosses. All that said, there is no doubt that paladins are one of the highest potential HPS healers in 9.0.5.
The 9.0.5 patch has resulted in some sizable nerfs to Discipline, a reduced
conversion rate and a reduced cap that now scales with Spell Power instead of health this has resulted in Discipline dropping from the highest throughput healer back down to earth to be more in line with others. That said, just looking at statistics of each healer's successful 95th percentile doesn't tell the whole story. By Discipline's nature, mass absorbs reduce your co-healers output by absorbing damage before others have a chance to heal it, a 95% parse of a Resto Druid likely won't have a 95% parsing Disc Priest in on that fight with them.
Representation wise, Discipline has maintained fairly solid representation both before and after the nerfs. Their absorbs, damage reduction in
, and their passive damage still make for one of the top healers in Mythic raiding.
With 9.0.5, Holy received slight buffs to utility and output with
providing a stacking, longer, and stronger healing bonus. There is also a significant buff to
's duration to make it easier to maintain and more accessible for the average player. While 5 seconds doesn't seem like much, it is very helpful on a number of high movement encounters, saving the Priest extra mana and allowing them to consistently cast more efficient
s. These buffs, along with reduced absorbs from Discipline have given a sizable bump in Holy's output according to WCL's stat page.
Many Holy players are generally dedicated Holy mains, and their representation did not swing significantly between Disc and Holy after these 9.0.5 changes. That said, farm content is in full swing for hardcore mythic guilds and there seems to be a steady increase of Disc mains giving Holy a try to shake things up on farm kills, potentially bolstering Holy's representation between now and 9.1.
Restoration Shaman has seen no significant changes in throughput or popularity, which isn't surprising as 9.0.5 only buffed weak covenant and legendary options to not be terrible anymore. Overall the statistics of 9.0 and 9.0.5 for the spec are remarkably identical, remaining with good throughput and being the most played healer spec.
Despite the balancing, covenant distribution has not changed a whole lot regardless of raiding difficulty - Necrolord and Venthyr combined popularity didn't even drop a percentage point. That is less than I expected but it is pretty late into the raid, maybe next season will shake things up more in that regard. Looking at a few of the ones that did go either Night Fae or Kyrian, they do seem to be doing fine now.
