Bastion is home to many new creatures. In one specific sideline quest, you will learn more about two of them, the winged cats known as Larions, and the automaton cats known as the Phalynx. We went through this questline and even speculated a bit about its possible rewards!
THIS IS A POST WRITTEN IN APRIL DETAILS MAY HAVE CHANGED WITH SHADOWLANDS LAUNCH IN NOVEMBER!
Nemea, the Larion Master
The first quest is found at Nemea's retreat, with the ascended kyrian Nemea giving the quest
Part of the Pride
. She talks about how her colleague, Pelodis, mentions that the phalynx, the automated cats of Bastion, follow orders without fail, but lack the nuance that Larions have. She then asks you to introduce yourself to 5 of her tamed Larions. All of the Larions answer well to your presence, with either nuzzles, sniffing you carefully, or even playfully leaping against you!
After this, Nemea gives you two additional quests:
All Natural Chews
asks you to gather antlers from the cloudstriders nearby for her Larions to chew, and
Larion at Large
has you trying to bring back one of the Larions Nemea has been struggling to bond with, Andira. Turns out Andira has a thorn embedded in one of her paws and you need to take it out to earn her trust.
Seems that Nemea noticed that Andira has taken a liking to you, and the next couple quests are meant to build further the trust between you and Andira: In
With Lance and Larion
, we explore the Larion's flying skills to hunt Cloudfeathers, and in
Providing for the Pack
, we learn that the beings of the Shadowlands need to eat just like us, but in different ways: They feed themselves with the very essence of the creatures they kill.
We then get our bond tested with Andira on
On Larion Wings
, where we're brought through a test course with her!
After this quest, Nemea is satisfied with her lessons and sends you to her colleague Pelodis in
Success Without Soul
.
Pelodis, the Phalynx Master
We're then brought to Pelodis, the Phalynx Master. Pelodis mentions how you will not be working with crazed beasts while in his care. We will gather anima from Kirin mobs in
Resource Drain
and locate a stray Phalynx, Gatamatos, in
Phalynx Malfunction
. Gatamatos seems to be malfunctioning a bit, but easily submits to you.
As we bring Gatamatos to Pelodis, we then help with the repairs in
We Can Rebuild Him
by gathering Stewards and armor pieces for the Phalynx.
After Gatamatos is repaired, we must then test its prowess in battle to ensure the repairs went well -
Combat Drills
has us killing Etherwyrms,
Laser Location
checks his tracking skills by locating gems, and
Superior Programming
tests his mettle against an untamed Larion.
The last test for Gatamatos is checking our tactical knowledge in
Tactical Formation
by testing where Gatamatos should fit in different Phalynx battle formations.
After this battery of tests, we're now going to choose a companion in
Pride or Unit
.
Choosing a Companion
You will find Pelodis and Nemea arguing about which one is superior, the Larion or the Phalynx.
Pelodis: I believe the efficiency of my phalynx have garnered their preference.
Nemea: You are foolish, Pelodis. <player> has been accepted into our pride. There is no higher honor.
> Why should I stand with the Larion?
Nemea: Forging a bond with even a single Larion is no easy feat. They are particular beings, noble and stubborn.
Nemea: The process of earning their trust is fulfilling to the soul. There is no better feeling than partnership with a larion who respects you.
> Why should I stand with the Phalynx?
Pelodis: Phalynx exhibit exceptional understanding. They accept and follow commands with ease and never disagree or question.
Pelodis: For just the effort of occasional maintenance and tuning, you have a perfect partner crafted specifically to your needs.
You must choose between one or the other, as a confirmation box tells you that you cannot change this decision on that character.
So far, there are no follow up quests, just pieces of dialogue whether you choose to stand with the Larion pride or the Phalynx unit.
If you choose to stand with the Larion:
Nemea: I knew that you felt the pull of kinship, <player>. Andira and the other larions shall be pleased for your return.
Pelodis: Unfortunate.
Nemea: The pride will be overjoyed to have you, <player>. Return soon, there is plenty more bonding to be done.
If you choose to stand with the Phalynx:
Pelodis: I knew you were a being of reason, <player>.
Nemea: Enjoy your soulless soldiers.
Pelodis: Wondrous! I am elated that you see the superiority of a constructed partner. I urge you to to return to lend a capable hand soon.
Speculation: Larion and Phalynx Mount Questlines
There are currently no follow-ups for either questlines, but the dialogue of the quest naturally leads itself to a questline that will eventually lead to a new mount. Raising mounts as part of questlines have become common recently, with the most recent examples in Battle for Azeroth being the
库亚冯的鞍座
and
托卡利的子嗣
for Horde players, the
蜜背收割者的缰绳
for Alliance players and the
影钩工蜂
for both factions.
There are datamined mount models for Larion and Phalynx mounts that do match the skin tones for the larion Andira and the phalynx Gatamatos. However, this could also not be the case, as only the Larion can fly, a point even brought up during the questline. This would cause a certain imbalance for the choice the player has to make. Either way, below are the two mount models that match their models.
Which one will you choose, the Larion or the Phalynx? Let us know in the comments!
