Champion of Pain
The Gladiator Arena
Maldraxxus is started by us arriving in the Theater of Pain. In
, you will be treated as a recruit and sent to fight in the theater in
. After defeating 30 combatants, you're asked to then kill 10 elite contenders in
, then defeat two champions in
and defeat their high champion in
After we defeat the high champion, the treachery that happened in Bastion is revealed to be done by the House of Constructs, one of the bigger houses in Maldraxxus. As the houses turn on the House of the Chosen, one that went against the treachery, we're overwhelmed in the arena, but are saved by one of the Baronesses of the House of the Chosen... Draka!
As we escape on Draka's flayedwing mount, we're shot down into the Iron Trench, an area full of undead mobs. We're asked to defeat deathwalkers in
, arm scavengers for the House of the Chosen in
and read fallen epitaphs in
. During these quests, Draka tells us more about Maldraxxus. After this, we kill the massive death elemental in the trench with the help of Draka in
Baroness Draka: Maldraxxus is home to those who lived for combat. Here, strength and value is rewarded.
Baroness Draka: We are the army of the Shadowlands, and are sworn to defend them. But our leader, the Primus, has gone missing.
Baroness Draka: Now, the five houses are at each other's throats. Two have already fallen. I won't let the Chosen to be next.
After this, we're formally introduced to Draka's house in Maldraxxus, the
House of the Chosen
As we're introduced to the House of the Chosen, Draka tells us that this house values honor above might. and they're the only ones standing between Maldraxxus and extinction. While she returns to the leader of the Chosen, Margrave Krexus, we're told to get used to the house by reporting to her colleague, Baron Vyraz, in
. Vyraz tells us to look for spies hidden among the Chosen in
and deliver orders to house members in
After this, we are sent to report back to Draka in
A Strange Blade
Draka gives us our next trial as a Chosen recruit, given by Margrave Krexus himself - We need to reach a big stone standing left by the Primus, leader of Maldraxxus, in an island of lava in the middle of the House of the Chosen in
. As we reach the stone, a voice floods our head... the voice of the Primus! After the voice talks to us, the stone breaks in half to reveal a blade embedded in it, and we fall from exhaustion. Draka then tells us that the blade was crafted by the Primus himself.
The Primus: Hear me, you who live among the dead.
The Primus: Time has foreseen your arrive. Your hand will guide this realm.
The Primus: Shape the key to the future. Unlock the fate of all fates.
Baroness Draka: The stone! What happened?
Baroness Draka: This blade was forged by the Primus! Heirmir will want to see it.
Baroness Draka: Heirmir was once the Primus's apprentice. They might know more about the blade.
Draka then sends us to the House of Chosen Blacksmith in
. Heirmir evaluates that the blade is indeed created by the Primus, but it is useless without a hilt. So, he tasks us to help create a hilt by grabbing bones from a captured beast in
and hides from masses around the House in
. With the materials in hand, we then craft the sword in
We then return to Draka with the crafted blade in
. We finally meet Margrave Krexus with the blade in
. There is a placeholder event and Captain Exposition explains what happens next. After this, we fly to
, and confirm that the blade indeed serves as a seal to open the Seat of the Primus, but it must be empowered first.
Margrave Krexus and Baroness Draka discuss your runeblade. Krexus recognizes the handiwork of the Primus, the missing leader of Maldraxxus.
Your forging of the runeblade has earned the rune of the Chosen. Krexus believes this may be the key to gaining entry to the Seat of the Primus.
He sends you and Draka to the Seat to confirm this.
Baroness Draka: I don't place much trust in prophecies. But I trust the Primus. And Krexus.
Baroness Draka: You wield that blade for a reason. No matter what that us, we need to see it through.
Baroness Draka: The other houses won't make it easy. We're in for a fight, outsider.
After this, you get breadcrumbs to three different portions of the Maldraxxus storyline.
Matron of Spies
The Lost Bannerwoman
, Draka reveals that she's not originally part of the Hosue of the Chosen, but instead was part of the House of Eyes, one of the houses destroyed by the conflict in Maldraxxus. She sends you to find her old colleague from the House of Eyes, who she had not heard about since their last mission to investigate one of the houses still standing in Maldraxxus, the House of Rituals. As it turns out, her old colleague was none other than Lady Vashj, the Coilfang Matron!
Now known as Baroness, Vashj is not too happy to see that you are sent by Draka, as Vashj thinks Draka abandoned the House of Eyes at their hour of need. However, she accepts to help you and Draka as long as you help her obtain her vengeance against the lich from the House of Rituals, Mor'bitan. We start helping Vashj by capturing a member from the House of Rituals in
and collect maldracite for her in
Baroness Vashj: Draka abandons us and then demands our loyalty? Unlike her, I will not leave my task unfinished.
Baroness Vashj: Lend your strength to me and I will answer her pleas for help.
After this, we help Vashj create a ritual to extract information from Mephiles the Loyal in
Baroness Vashj: Let us begin. Set the crystals in place.
Mephiles the Loyal: Cursed witch... I will never talk!
Baroness Vashj: Who said anything about "talking"?
Baroness Vashj: We know many ways to pry information from the unwilling...
Mephiles the Loyal: AAAAAAAGH!
Mor'Bitan: With the House of Eyes eliminated, our secrecy has been assured. Margrave Sin'dane must not learn of our work here.
Mor'Bitan: Our new baron bids that I complete the ritual personally. Harvest the anima before my arrival. Do not fail me, Mephiles!
Baroness Vashj: A secret ritual... Interesting. We will use it to draw him out.
Revenge in Motion
With their plan revealed, it is time to use that ritual to lure Mor'Bitan straight to us. Vashj asks us to collect jars of Maldracite Dust in
, charge anima crystals with the anima from ritualists in
and collect drafts from architects in
After we turn in all required items to Vashj, we prepare the ritual to lure Mor'Bitan in
and finally kill him in
. With Mor'Bitan's death, we get to empower the Primus' runeblade with the Rune of the Immortal Artifice, the rune from the House of Rituals. As we empower the runeblade, the Primus' voice fills our head once more. We then return with Vashj to the Seat of the Primus in
Baroness Vashj: Be'lemer an-delei! Such is the price for your treachery!
Baroness Vashj: But... what power still lingers in the air?
The Primus: Sate an undying grudge.
Baroness Vashj: That runeblade... it matches the one Margrave Akarek described...
Baroness Vashj: This... changes things. Perhaps Draka holds some small hope of victory.
Baroness Vashj: So you hold the key to the Seat of the Primus. Then I will meet you there.
Baroness Vashj: Perhaps you can set Maldraxxus back to rights.
House of Constructs
The Chosen Offensive
Draka tells us to help Baron Vyraz in
. He's leading a siege against the forces of the House of Constructs, soldiers created using parts from beings in all of the Shadowlands. Vyraz suggests going with an all-front assault by killing Steelskin mobs in
, raise spirits of demoralized soldiers in
and destroy enemy positions in
With the assault setup, we're now ready to take on the Constructs commander, General Alver, in
. After this, Vyraz suggests we go strike the House of Constructs by ourselves in
. As we approach the House of Constructs, we see Secutor Mevix injured, and after an AWESOME IN-GAME EVENT, we're left deep in a pile of Kyrian corpses. Thankfully, Captain Exposition tells us what happened there.
You and Secutor Mevix were captured by Margrave Gharmal, the leader of the House of Constructs. The margrave has left you with the house's forces to be dissected and 'reused'.
The Kyrian Horror
As we break out of the pile of corpses, we notice that one of the kyrians in the pile is not dead yet! However, the Kyrian was left blind, as the House of Constructs took his eyes and deemed the rest of him not useful for combat. We help Thales free some of his alive friends, as well as Secutor Mevix, in
. After this, we charge forward to kill important Construct figures in
. As we move to kill those in charge, Thales tells us about what they're doing in the House of Constructs.
Aspirant Thales: Earlier they were counting the bodies, as if they were as valuable as anima to them.
Aspirant Thales: They took some of the live prisoners to a doctor, f-for experimentation.
Aspirant Thales: What is that smell. What are they doing to our dead?
Aspirant Thales: These horrors are far greater than I could have imagined. How can we trust any of you?
Secutor Mevix: I don't need your trust, Thales. I fight for Maldraxxus, and this is not what we stand for.
After regrouping with Secutor Mevix and the kyrian prisoners, we destroy animates buried beneath the ground in
, kill warstitched forces in
and retrieve lost kyrian in
As we group up, the Flesh Stitchery, the place where the Kyrians are being dismantled for parts, is protected by a Soul Barrier. Kyrian ingenuity comes together in
, where we use a reconstructed Praetor to get past the Soul Barrier and disable all the protective barriers. As we get past the barrier, we see the House of Construct's plan - Fuse all of the Kyrian flesh into a massive construct, birthing a new generation of them. However, their plan is not going as discussed. We then dispact of the two Maldraxxi fleshcrafters in
First Apprentice Malkrex: When Stitchflesh returns he will know that I, Malkrex, have complete his research. Forging kyrian flesh into the ultimate construct!
Sharrex the Fleshcrafter: He will also notice that you failed to purge the flesh of its memories before assembly!
First Apprentice Malkrex: Nonsense! Once we embed a Maldraxxian soul, it will squelch any remaining echoes of Bastion brainwashing!
Sharrex the Fleshcrafter: Uh... I just saw it move! Those kyrian parts are fighting to take control of the construct!
First Apprentice Malkrex: Well, uh, there are many complicated factors that go into successful flesh preparation. Perhaps I need a touch more--
Sharrex the Fleshcrafter: Ah-HAH! So you DID botch the procedure!
As we attempt to destroy the construct, Thales approaches us and tells us to not do it, as he can sense the kyrian souls within the construct suffering from confusion and pain. Following his suggestion, we mount on the construct and use it to escape the House of Constructs in
. The construct is strong enough to defeat Baron Halis, one of the barons of the House of Constructs! After we escape the house, the Primus' runeblade is infused with another rune, the Rune of Banded Strength. Once again, the Primus' voice fills our head as it happens.
The Primus: The strength of many in one.
Aspirant Thales: Strange... what magic do I fill?
Secutor Mavix: That blade... it was forged by the Primus!
We're then asked to return to the Seat of the Primus in
House of Plagues
The Plagued Survivor
Draka sends us to locate any survivors we could find from
. She mentions that the House of Plagues was the first one to fall in the conflict, and was initially thought to be a mere accident, before they realized what was truly going on in Maldraxxus. As we approach the House of Plagues, we find a survivor, Plague Deviser Marileth, who mistakes us as one of his apprentices. Marileth tells us they're trying to impress Margrave Stradama, the leader of the House of Plagues, and thus we start helping him by gathering spores in
and venom sacs in
. After this, we help him creating a potion in
After this, we bring our created slime with us to gather equipment in
, kill a rival ritualist in
and collect lost pages from Marileth's journal in
. These pages tells us more of what happened before the destruction of the Hosue of Plagues.
Plague Deviser Marileth: The Primus has left Maldraxxus. The other houses isolate from us, or perhaps we from them. Our craft struggles without anima, through Stradama grants all she can. She confides her fears in me. I pledge myself to assuage them.
Plague Deviser Marileth: The liches have broken the silence. Margrave Sin'dane sent an ambassador. We suspect deception, but shunning them would imply hostility. The stress keeps Stradama in her quarters. I fear for her... and for us all.
Plague Deviser Marileth: The liches' anima sustains us. I fear duplicity still, but Stradama cannot spurn her peers. Between assignments, I devise a potion to preserve her should my fears manifest. I pray she'll never need it... or that I craft it in time.
Plague Deviser Marileth: Our house... annihilated... where is Stradama! I must craft the potion... I-I must...!
Devising the Potion
Marileth guides us into the remains of the House of Plagues, and we continue working on our potion for Stradama by gathering her favorite reagent in
. After this, we present our prepared potion to Margrave Stradama in
. Turns out that Margrave Stradama is still alive, but not quite herself. After Stradama disappears into the plagues, we empower our runeblade yet again, this time with the Rune of Adroit Ingenuity, with the Primus talking to us once more.
Plague Deviser Marileth: We've come so far, apprentice. This is all that remains!
Margrave Stradama: Who beckons me?! Who dares add their voice to my torment?!
Margrave Stradama: Wait... this potion... Marileth?
Plague Deviser Marileth: My margrave... what... has befallen you? No, I can fix this! I just need to--
Margrave Stradama: Dear Marileth... forgive yourself. I am lost... but you... you must endure...
Margrave Stradama: No more... no more, no more, no more!
The Primus: Find power in unexpected elements.
Plague Deviser Marileth: I shall endure... for... you...
Marileth then returns with us to the Seat of the Primus in
, saying that he's happy at the joy we brought to his margrave and he would not be a good teacher without offering his help in return.
Ritual for the Damned
The Dead Margrave
As we gather at the entrance of the Seat of the Primus, all our gathered allies are there. After empowering our blade with four runes, one remains, and we're asked to return to the House of the Chosen in
. However, as we return to the House of the Chosen, many Construct Soldier corpses litter the House, and Margrave Klexus is found to be dead.
Draka and Vyraz start discussing on what can be done, with the answer landing on gather the Chosen's mightiest soldiers, even one that was lost to the Maw. Vyraz, learning of our past experiences in the Maw, has us go to Oribos to try and retrieve the lost soldier in
Baroness Draka: Vyraz! What happened here?
Baroness Draka: Without Krexus, the war is all but lost. Our only hope lies within the Seat of the Primus.
Baron Vyraz: And what if that hall stands empty? No. The Seat is a fool's errand.
Baron Vyraz: We are Chosen. We rely on strength of arms. We must gather our mightiest soldiers... even our missing baron.
Baroness Draka: Was he not lost to the Maw?
Baron Vyraz: This mortal claims to have escaped its clutches once before! Let us put them to the test.
The Recovered Baron
As we return to Oribos, Bolvar Fordragon is there to tell us that the Baron is indeed trapped in the Maw. After a placeholder event, it turns out that the Baron missing is none other than the Ashbringer, Alexandros Mograine! We're asked to return in
, and although we have no quest showing us the Maw, we learn that Baron Vyraz was the one responsible for Mograine's imprisonment into the Maw. With that information, we return to Maldraxxus to question Vyraz. Mograine and his son Darion have a short meeting in Oribos, but it is cut short as we need to go back to Maldraxxus to solve the situation there.
Lord Darion Mograine: Father...
Alexandros Mograine: There will be time for us to talk later, Darion. I promise.
Baroness Draka: Meet us in Maldraxxus, Maw Walker. We have a war to fight.
The Empty Throne
, Mograine reveals that he got imprisoned because he learned of Vyraz secretly meeting with the members of the House of Rituals, and we question Baron Vyraz about his involvement in the Maldraxxus conflict. As the fight begins, we empower our runeblade with the final rune, with the Primus speaking one last time. As we overpower Vyraz, he calls for the armies of Maldraxxus to overwhelm us and Mograine, and Draka saves the day once more with her flayedwing!
Alexandros Mograine: Vyraz! Show yourself!
Baron Vyraz: So the mortal returns, along with our wayward baron. The constructs failed to finish you, and so did the Maw. How disappointing.
Alexandros Mograine: Your schemes have brought about your own ruin. Now we will end you!
Baron Vyraz: Foolish Mograine, always choosing loyalty over might. But victory lies in one's choice of allies. And with their help, I now claim the mantle of margrave!
Alexandros Mograine: I will bury my blade in your skull, traitor! For Krexus!
The Primus: See truth through deception.
Baron Vyraz: Ah, you completed the runeblade! Then I will take it from your corpse.
Baron Vyraz: I bested Krexus himself! You two are nothing!
Alexandros Mograine: We will avenge him here and now!
Alexandros Mograine: You cannot win, Vyraz! You are outnumbered!
Baron Vyraz: Fools! All the houses of Maldraxxus stand against you!
Baron Vyraz: Enough games! Guards, slay them all and bring me the runeblade!
Alexandros Mograine: Honorless coward!
Baroness Draka: Ashbringer! Maw Walker! Hold on!
As Draka returns us to the Seat of the Primus, we use the complete runeblade to open the door to the Seat of the Primus in
. Approaching the throne of the Primus, a message is left to us from the Prime, telling us that we must talk to the Winter Queen of Ardenweald, and we are sent there in
. Before leaving for Oribos, you are able to talk to your allies to get their impressions for the future of Maldraxxus.
This corruption... I had come to expect as much from the vile force of Death.
I felt only horror when I awoke here. Horror and rage. But in time, Margrave Krexus showed me that the Maldraxxi were not the Scourge: honor presided among the Chosen.
But he has been slain by his own subordinate. The other margraves advance upon us. The hunger for dominance has starved what little honor remained.
I will purge this wretched place.
I had always imagined the afterlife would be extravagant and beautiful--a realm all my own where I could dote and be doted on.
Imagine my surprise when I arrived in a necrotic wasteland more barren than Outland and more hostile than the crushing depths...
Imagine my surprise when I liked it.
This fight for dominance is more exhilarating than any luxuries could ever be.
My apprentice! So good to see you. I owe you thanks for your assistance with my field research.
I can't place it, but something feels different now... It's as if a great weight has been lifted from the shoulders of Maldraxxus.
Perhaps I'm simply happy that our visitors from Bastion have befriended the dear slimes!
Though I can't recall which slimes were corrosive... Hm.
This conflict has taken a great toll on all of us. We've sustained wounds far deeper than just physical.
I can only hope that taking the Seat of the Primus will set things right. Both Bastion and Maldraxxus must have time to heal.
