Summary of Each Chapter
The Bastion leveling storyline is divided by six chapters on the achievement
. Below, we have a quick lore summary for each chapter:
: You are introduced to the Kyrian of Bastion, being led around the zone by Kleia and her soulbind, Pelagos. Pelagos is a weak Kyrian that has trouble starting his ascension due to the fragility of his emotions, and we eventually help him overcome those and set him straight on the path of ascending.
The Aspirant's Crucible
: You will start your path to ascension within the ranks of the Kyrian by training as one - Including reliving your past memories, helping the Kyrian with more mundane tasks and finally testing your mettle against other aspirants.
At the end of this chapter, you will learn your
Kyrian Covenant ability
The Temple of Purity
: The next step in Kyrian ascension is going through the harsh trials of the Temple of Purity, where you will shed away your bonds with your past lives. While you learn about Purity rituals, the temple is attacked by kyrians who decided to follow another path for their trials and are now avatars of vengeance, called the Forsworn. Uther the Lightbringer, one of the most notable Paladins in Azeroth, is part of the Forsworn.
Chasing a Memory
: After defeating the leader of the attack on the Temple of Purity, a fragment of her being is used to research her past memories and discover how the Forsworn were formed and where are they attacking next. Uther is shown to represent a significant portion of the Forsworn plans (being referred to as "the vengeful one"), but it isn't known just how important to the Forsworn he is.
By the Archon's Will
: After discovering that the Forsworn plan to attack the Temple of Courage, you're granted an audience with the Archon to warn the Kyrian. As the meeting happens, Uther penetrates the Elysian Hold, the Archon's homestead, and disables the wards protecting the Temple of Courage against outside attacks.
During this chapter, you will learn the zone ability
, which will invoke a Steward to serve you for a few minutes.
The Temple of Courage
: It is not the Forsworn who are attacking the Temple of Courage, but the Necrolord armies of Maldraxxus, claiming to be doing it for anima. The Temple of Courage falls, but the Hand of Courage, Xandria, still stands. This portion culminates in the dungeon
It is currently unknown what is the main objective of the Forsworn (and Uther), as their storyline is cut short during the leveling questline to divert the attack from the Necrolords. There are many level 60 areas full of Forsworn, implying that the storyline will continue at the level cap, possibly only completable by players who have pledged themselves to the Kyrian covenant.
Welcome to Bastion
The first portion of Bastion talks about how the player got there, and the start of looking for a meeting with the Archon, the leader of the Kyrian. You can read all about this first questline in our
Hints to the Shadowlands Introduction Event
Aspirant's Rest - Meeting Pelegos
After being scolded by Kalisthene, we're sent to Aspirant's Rest by Kleia in
by Kalisthene's orders. During the walk, Kleia talks more about herself, about how she was about to become ascended herself before things started going badly in Bastion. She also mentions her soulbind, the kyrian Pelagos, who seems to have started a ritual without her.
Kalisthene: You know the path better than most, aspirant. Help this new arrival walk it.
Kleia: I understand.
Kalisthene: Archon's eyes upon you both.
Kleia: If she thinks I require a lecture-- <Deep breath.>
Kleia: We should be on our way. I will explain as we travel.
Kleia: I yearn for the sky. I was so close to attaining my wings, before things went... awry.
Kleia: When you arrived I thought, perhaps, you were a sign that all was well at last.
Kleia: I was mistaken.
Kleia: Hope is not yet lost. Perhaps we can find a way to improve things. Together.
Kleia: This is it. Come, we must find my Soulbind, Pelagos.
Aspirant Defender: They began the ritual without you! We tried to dissuade them, but they--
Kleia: Did not listen. Pelagos, you fool.
Kleia: We have no time to lose. <player>, I need your help.
As we arrive in Aspirant's Rest, we're sent to rescue Pelagos in
and learn more about the cleansing process the Kyrians go through in
The Aspirant's Crucible
Igniting the Forge
After saving Pelagos, we are sent to Aspirant's Crucible in
. Kleia's Larion, Theonara, flies us there. We start our trial on
, where the leader of Aspirant's Crucible, Forgelite Sophone, has us commune with an eternal flame to witness memories of our past lives. We will then see representations of NPCs from many past expansions!
Eternal Watcher: Open your mind to me, mortal. We will see what memories reveal themselves.
Eternal Watcher: <player> bravely stood against the forces tearing their world asunder!
Eternal Watcher: <player> stood beside the orcs of Draenor to face the cruel industry of the Iron Horde!
Eternal Watcher: <player> lent their aid to the peaceful people of Pandaria in their time of need.
Eternal Watcher: <player> traveled to another world to aid those who faced the Burning Legion!
Forgelite Sophone: Fascinating. To have seen so much, in so little time...
After witnessing our memories, we're sent to talk to the Steward Sika in
. Sika, as well as Forgelite Sophone, has us collecting anima from many sources to reheat the forge in Aspirant's Crucible in
After gathering the required materials, we help reignite the flame of the forge in
. After the forge is reignited, we help Sophone and Sika craft a piece of armor in
. After we earn a piece of armor, Kleia and Pelegos summons us once more in
, and our trials to ascend through the Kyrian's ranks will truly begin.
Kyrian Training - Unlock Your Covenant Ability
The first step in the Kyrian training is to spar with some enemies in
The next quest is
, where you will learn a harsh lesson in humility against the overtuned sparring assistant, Athanos.
After the Aspirants see something in us, we accompany Kleia to
, and we undergo our first ritual cleansing in
. After we don their clothes and go through their rituals, it is time to cleanse our memories. With our cleansing complete, we return to Kalisthene and learn our first covenant ability in
! Kalisthene teaches it to us as thanks for delivering the message about the Mawsworn to the Archon.
Kalisthene: When you arrived here, you spoke of vile beings from the Maw.
Kalisthene: I have taken your dire proclamation to the Archon herself.
Kalisthene: She imparted upon me those words: Thank you for your service.
Kalisthene: As a token of our gratitude, we wish to offer you a gift. Will you accept?
Kalisthene: Your service is complete. You may remain in Bastion as long as you please. Archon's eyes upon you all.
After we obtain our Kyrian Covenant ability, we return to Aspirant's Rest in
The Temple of Purity
Learning About Purification
After returning to Aspirant's Rest, Disciple Kosmas will approach you to talk about
, a place in Bastion to help aspirants to cleanse themselves from the burdens of their past lives. According to Kosmas, the situation in the Temple of Purity isn't that great, with the kyrian disciples working there spreading themselves too thin.
Arriving at Purity's Reflection, an area before the Temple of Purity itself, we see our first Forsworn, Kyrians who failed their trials and now roam Bastion as avatars of vengeance. We are asked to aid disciples in
and to inspire fellow aspirants in
. However, this does not go too well, as many aspirants fail to contain their doubts and turn into Forsworn right before our eyes. However, not all bonds cleansed by the Kyrian are negative ones - Positive ones are removed too, like their connection to their families.
A Familiar Face
After returning to Eridia, the Hand of Purity, she tells us to go check on one of her disciples in
. Checking on Disciple Nikolon, we find a familiar face... Uther the Lightbringer! However, he's a bit... darkened, being one of the Forsworn. Uther is found talking with Disciple Nikolon and we just arrive short of interrupting their conversation. We bring back Nikolon to the Temple of Purity while witnessing Nikolon's rising doubts firsthand.
Disciple Nikolon: I will consider it.
Uther: The choice is yours. You know how to find us.
<The disciple appears to be deep in thought. He does not look at you.>
You had better seek another disciple, aspirant. I cannot help you.
> Eridia asked me to find you.
Disciple Nikolon: Ah, and so the Hand beckons.
Disciple Nikolon: I suppose you want to know what you just saw.
Disciple Nikolon: Suffice to say that I am not alone in my malcontent.
Disciple Nikolon: I tried to warn her that this was coming.
Disciple Nikolon: Just look at the state of this temple. All these aspirants... how they suffer.
Disciple Nikolon: I cannot bear the sight of this suffering. I-- I--
Disciple Nikolon: If I go... who will...
Disciple Nikolon: I am still needed here. I must endure!
Disciple Nikolon: The Hand... she can help me. She will not let me fall!
Disciple Nikolon: She can save me. She can save me!
Eridia: Disciple? What is wrong?
Disciple Nikolon: Please... help me...
> I saw Uther speaking to Disciple Nikolon.
Uther? That name does seem familiar.
Perhaps the aspirant that Devos took under her wing? How curious that you recognized him. It must be notable because he is from your world.
After this, you will help Eridia cleanse Disciple Nikolon in
Step Back From That Ledge, My Friend
. However, the cleansing fails, and Nikolon also falls and becomes a Forsworn.
Invasion of the Temple
After Nikolon's fall, the Temple of Purity falls under siege by the Forsworn! We help cleanse the temple from the Forsworn in
and reactivate the vesper bells to reinforce the temple defenses in
. You will also need to collect forsworn sermons in
After gathering everything, we meet again with Eridia and she confirms she knows the leader of the Forsworn assault, Lysonia. We go confront her in
. Lysonia was raised to the ranks of ascended together with Eridia, before she turned dark. As we fly with Disciple Kosmas to reactivate the rest of the vesper bells, Eridia and Lysonia talked about their motives. After all bells are reactivated, the Paragon of Purity, Vesiphone, appears and dismantles the assault.
Lysonia: I do not wish to kill you, sister, but I will if I must.
Eridia: Why are you doing this?
Lysonia: You know why. You need only accept the truth that lies before you.
Eridia: What truth could possibly justify this slaughter?
Lysonia: We all suffered a thousand little deaths at the hands of your temple, Eridia.
Eridia: The process of purification is not meant to be easy. But we are better for it. You were better for it.
Lysonia: And yet I cannot remember who taught me compassion. Or bravery. Or loyalty. Do you?
Eridia: The lessons remain! You are still a whole being, Lysonia.
Lysonia: No, not whole. But someday, all Kyrian will be.
Vesiphone: You can yet be saved, Lysonia.
Eridia: My Paragon... please...
Eridia then asks you to rescue Lysonia from Vesiphone in
, begging us as Lysonia was very dear to her. Lysonia resists capture and attempts to flee, but Vesiphone fragments Lysonia. Vesiphone will then fly you out of the Temple of Purity in
Chasing a Memory
Examining the Fragment
Vesiphone provides you with Lysonia's fragment and asks you to travel to the Mnemonic Locus with Kleia in
. The Mnemonic Locus is a place where the memories of the Kyrian are stored, and she hopes that in there, we can figure out how Lysonia became a Forsworn. In the Mnemonic Locus, we meet the Steward known as the Forgelite Prime, Mikanikos, who is having issues with Locus-Keeper Mnemis, the keeper of the Mnemonic Locus.
Mikanikos then asks for help with overring the Mnemis unit by locating cores in
and locating a locus manual in
After this, Mikanikos asks us to reactivate
, and then we need to chase Lysonia's Forsworn memories in
, which will be flooding the Mnemonic Locus.
The next step is to go through the Mnemonic Locus to explore Lysonia's memories in
. In there, we will see that a shrouded figure has approached Lysonia with promises of not losing herself to the process the Kyrians go through for ascension. Lysonia is also revealed to have become the hand for this shrouded figure, and with them, they will set a new path for the Kyrian. The last memory shows Lysonia coordinating the attack to the Temple of Purity, and with it, end the purification that scours the Kyrian from all emotion. Kleia then mentions she knows where this last memory can be found, and Uther shows up in this last memory, but is sent away by the Shrouded Figure. Before we figure out why, Locus-Keeper Mnemis stops us from seeing the rest of the memory..
The Final Memory
Mikanikos, sick of Locus-Keeper Mnemis' insolence, finally has us beat the automaton down up in
. After Mnemis regains consciousness and finally starts listening to us, he tells us that the memory in specific can only be seen in the Vault of the Archon. To gain entrance to the Vault of the Archon, we need to bring offerings to the vault guardians and get them in
After getting them, we then gain entrance to the Vault in
. Inside the Vault, we need to protect Mikanikos while he opens the inner defenses of the barrier, and once the barrier is finally cracked, we gain access to the final memory in full in
. In the full memory, we learn why Uther was sent away. A Mawsworn Champion is also seen in this final memory, revealing Lysonia and the Forsworn's connection to the Maw. This memory is revealed to be shortly before the attack on the Temple of Purity, and also mentions that the Temple of Courage is the next target for the Forsworn.
Image of Lysonia: Why did you send the vengeful one away?
Shrouded Figure: His gaze is too narrow, yet, for what I now offer you.
Shrouded Figure: There is another power at play. We do not fight for Bastion alone.
Shrouded Figure: Once you have taken Purity, we will make our move. Together, we will achieve great things.
Shrouded Figure: If we have Courage.
Image of Lysonia: I understand. It will be done.
We then leave the Mnemonic Locus in
, now needing to get an audience with the Archon more than ever.
By The Archon's Will
Our first destination when looking for an audience with the Archon is Hero's Rest, where Kleia says she can formulate a plan to get to the Archon. We go there in
. In Hero's Rest, we meet Kalisthene once more, who mentions that with the new information about the Mawsworn being within the ranks of the Kyrian, the Archon might be more considerate of a meeting with them.
However, the communication with the Polemarch, the Archon's second-in-command, is broken. To help fix it, we recruit a Steward in
- And the Steward can be summoned in Bastion with the new spell
! After getting a steward for you, use him to repair the beacon and contact Polemarch Adrestes in
An Audience with the Archon
Polemarch Adrestes has determined that, with the gravity of the situation, an audience with the Archon is warranted, and you're flown to Elysian Hold, the main fortress of the Kyrian, in
! We're then granted an audience with the Archon in
. A placeholder cinematic takes place here, but we know that Kleia warns Kyrestia of the impending attack to the Temple of Courage.
After warning Kyrestia, we're sent to the eastern part of Elysian Hold to check on the wards protecting each temple in
. All wards are active but the Ward of Courage, which is being deactivated... by Uther himself! Uther managed to disable the Ward in time and disappear.
Kleia: No! The Ward of Courage!
Uther: You are too late.
Uther: The Forsworn will rise, and Bastion shall endure a new order.
Pelagos: We must alert the Archon. The Temple of Courage is no longer safe!
The Temple of Courage
Temple In Siege
We rush to the Temple of Courage in
. During our flight to the Temple of Courage, another placeholder cinematic happens. As we land at the Temple of Courage, we see that the forces of Maldraxxus are invading Bastion! We take back the front of the Temple of Courage in
, as we fight off one of the liches of Maldraxxus, Nalthor the Rimebinder.
Nalthor the Rimebinder: You interrupt my work? Run little kyrian, while you still can.
Thanikos: You have broken the ancient treaties, lich. Justice will be done!
Nalthor the Rimebinder: Then you have chosen to serve my master in death with your kin.
Nalthor the Rimebinder: A request I will gladly honor.
Thanikos: Has madness taken you? We are your allies!
Nalthor the Rimebinder: You are but fuel. Nothing more.
Nalthor the Rimebinder: Rejoice, kyrian, for your corpses, your homes, your very essence are forever more in the master's service.
Nalthor the Rimebinder: I shall see to it that you serve at my side when you are reborn, as a reward for the entertainment.
Thanikos: Push forward! Secure the area!
After we retrieve the first portion of the temple, we charge forward together with Thanikos in
Then, we help Mikanikos repair a Centurion Colossus in
and then drain Anima to empower the Colossus in
while we sunder some of the Maldraxxus soldiers in
Defending the Paragon
We're finally able to delay the attack on the Temple of Courage on
, by using the Centurion Colossus to fire bolts of anima on the attackers!
However, it's not over, as the lead of the Maldraxxus attack, Amarth, is attacking Xandria, the Paragon of Courage, deep within the temple! Thanikos flies us there for the last showdown in
, however, the odds turn against us as Amarth uses anima to reshape Thanikos into a bone monstrosity. We have to regrettably dispatch the now Thanikos Spinerender while Xandria and Amarth talk about what led the armies of Maldraxxus to attack Bastion.
Xandria: Monster! What has driven you to this madness?!
Amarth: It is simple, really. Anima.
Xandria: We have been your ally for untold eons! Innocent souls are perishing!
Amarth: We must all be resourceful in these trying times after all. Why not cripple your vile realm in the process?
Amarth: Innocent? I think not.
Amarth: You are all complicit in a broken cycle. We are the cure.
Amarth: Your temple is shattered. Your peoples' souls are ours. Give up.
Xandria: I am courage incarnate. I will fight until my last breath!
Amarth: Then I shall enjoy drawing it from your corpse.
At this point, we finish the Bastion storyline and earn the achievement
. The quest
can also be picked up, but it does not grant ant rewards besides the ones you get for completing the dungeon.
