Nimble Fingers: A Guide to Acquiring Fangs of the Father
Rogues get a new legendary set in 4.3--perhaps to deal with all the melee balance problems in Firelands! Like the means of acquiring
, rogues will obtain this legendary through a series of quests interspersed with looting items from raid encounters. While completing the entire quest series does require a raid, there's a ton of great solo content at the start, such as exciting high-stakes stealth missions.
For background: check out the quest series in Badlands covering Rheastrasza, the ambitious red dragon who acquired a black dragon egg and magically purified it, cleansing it of the Black Dragonflight’s corruption. This questline covers the fate of the purified egg and introduces the enigmatic Black Prince, Wrathion--in a storyline taking the enterprising rogue to Dragon Soul, Karazhan, Ravenholdt Manor, and much more in the process.
In this guide, I've provided a list of all the quests--their objectives, dialogue descriptions, and relevant notes and tips to help you get through each step faster! Maybe you've got a fresh 85 rogue alt and are wondering how far you can get with solo questing, or raid only a semi-regular basis and want to know how long each raiding step will take.
Pathal has written an excellent in-depth guide that I've referenced several times in this overview:
A Legendary Undertaking--Helping Your Rogue Pick Up a Pair of Fangs

Stage 1: Jaws of Retribution
This initial stage does not require players to raid--it's a great way for all types of players to experience some unique questing and lore, getting sweet upgrades out of the deal! In this stage, you learn the fate of Rhea's purified egg and ally with Wrathion to purge the Black Dragonflight.

Hello, <name>! You've earned a reputation among the flight as having - shall we say - 'nimble fingers.'
We need someone of your skills for a matter of utmost delicacy. Before I reveal more, we need to know you're the right <man/woman> for the job.
When the course of battle takes you to the Eye of Eternity, I need you to pickpocket
to retrieve a cryptomancer's decoder ring. Are you up to the task?
You will begin the quest series from
, who is initially stationed at the entrance of Dragon Soul. If you are zoned into a partially-completed raid, he will be located inside Wyrmrest Temple inside Dragon Soul.
To get to
in a partially-cleared raid, take the portal at the entrance to the top of the Temple. Then, take the portal to your left to zone into the Eye of Eternity.
You only need to pickpocket
, not defeat her. You simply need to find a raid that has killed the first three bosses on Normal or Heroic difficulty. Keep in mind that
is preceded by several waves of trash.
Multiple rogues can complete this step per raid. You will have to reset
between pickpockets by aggroing her and then using
and use it to decode
, currently stationed at the Vermillion Redoubt in the Twilight Highlands, has intercepted a coded message of grave importance. I'll let her explain the full situation, but we need your expertise to unravel the cipher!
Take your decoder ring to an ethereal thaumaturge in your capital city - he should know how to charge it. Acquire the encoded cipher from
and use the ring to decode it for her. Hurry! Time is ticking...
You first need to find an Ethereal in a capital city.
near the Transmogrification/Void Storage NPCs. They will require for decoding the ring. There's an option to turn their offer down, but you are no match for the Ethereal.
You will then need to fly to
at the Vermillion Redoubt in Twilight Highlands. She will give you the cipher, but it will take 12 hours to fully decode it. The 12 hours for your ring to charge counts as real-life time, not in-game time.
Speak to Mostrasz at the Vermillion Redoubt and fly to Ravenholdt Manor together.
If the egg is in Ravenholdt Manor, we can't risk torching it in an all-out assault. I'll need someone slippery to get in there and find out for sure.
That's you, <name>.
Mostrasz will help you infiltrate the compound. Speak to him just outside and fly to Ravenholdt together. Good luck!
Infiltrate Ravenholdt Manor and locate the missing black dragon egg.
Just beyond this cave lies Ravenholdt Manor. You need to get inside without being seen!
<Mostrasz places an enchantment on you.>
There - now I'll be able to keep an eye on you and communicate as you venture into the compound. Now sneak into that manor, locate the egg, and don't get caught...
This is the first of three quests that requires the rogue to use stealth, paying careful attention to hostile patrols. It's not as elaborate as the later two quests, but provides a good introduction on how to creatively path and avoid mobs within a large aggro radius.
Pathal provides a walk-through and useful maps for this section:
To Catch A Thief
After reaching the basement, you'll be rewarded with a cut-scene in which you learn about Wrathion (the hatched dragon from the purified egg), his views on the Black Dragonflight, his alliance with Ravenholdt, and why he wants your help.
Seek out Zazzo Twinklefingers near the ruins of Gilneas City in Gilneas.
If you wish to join my cause and slaughter the black dragons in hiding, prove yourself by taking down Hiram Creed. He's amassing an army in Gilneas.
We haven't been able to slip past his defenders, but we've got a man on the scene keeping an eye on him. Zazzo Twinklefingers, a very crafty arcane mage, is waiting for us to contact him just outside of the ruins of the Gilnean capital.
Find him and he'll direct you to the target.
Stealth into the ruins of Gilneas City and slay
within the military district.
The city has been in chaos for days now.
, disguised as a Gilnean, has infected the lot of those dogs with his own draconic blood. Even the Forsaken are having trouble routing him out.
Only a surgical assassination can end this!
The bridge behind me is relatively unguarded. Slip in through merchant's square and head south - you'll find Creed in the middle of the military district.
I'll keep an eye on you and pull you out if there's any trouble.
...There WILL be trouble!
This quest requires you to stealth through Gilneas, avoiding guards, dogs, and Worgen scouts that have enhanced stealth detection. The second part of this quest requres you to slay a member of the Black Dragonflight disguised as a Gilnean,

to reach Hiram, as well as maps and links to videos. Many parts of Gilneas are buggy with stealth, so read up on his alternate routes and see which path works best for your playstyle.
Hiram is an unconventional boss--many forms of rogue utility actually work on him! He has two phases--Phase 1 has several abilities that must be interrupted, and Phase 2 begins at 75%, with the addition of another ability.
Phase 1 Abilities:
Hurls a ball of dark energy, inflicting shadow damage and creating a zone of consuming darkness on the ground.
Cannot be kicked, but can be stunned while casting.
Deals 18500 to 21500 Shadow damage and drains all energy.
Very important to be interrupt--and

: Move behind Creed as he channels this ability to avoid taking any damage. Don't waste interrupts on it.
For the duration of the fight, you will need to move Creed out of the void zones spawned by
, so try to stun as many of these casts as you can.
As this is a 1v1 encounter and you are "tanking" the boss, Combat is the favored spec. Core abilities of Assassination and Subtlety won't be of use since they have positioning requirements, like
Combat is also a useful spec because of survivability talents:
. If you need extra survivability, try
Report your success to Prince Wrathion at Ravenholdt Manor in Hillsbrad Foothills.
Prince Wrathion will be pleased to hear that you've succeeded. You should report back to him at Ravenholdt Manor.
The Prince has been known to be extremely generous to those who help him.
Stage 2: Maw of Oblivion
This next stage is a mix of solo questing and raiding Dragon Soul. After acquiring 333
s from bosses in Dragon Soul, you're back to creative questing, this time in Karazhan's cellar.
s by looting Elementium Gem Clusters from creatures in the Dragon Soul Raid encounter.
The daggers I have given you are lifeless shells. They can do great things, once they are given a means to contain the power I have in mind.
I need for you to acquire Shadowy Gems for me. The facets of these unusual stones are like windows into the infinite. They are often used by minions of the Twilight's Hammer to control the most powerful of elementals.
A great battle is raging around Wyrmrest temple. Collect Elementium Gem Clusters from Deathwing's minions and bring the gems to me.
This quest can be completed in Normal or Heroic raids. Heroic bosses drop the same amount of clusters/gems as normal-mode bosses. 25-player bosses usually drop 2 clusters, 10-player bosses drop 1 cluster.
There can be between three to nine gems in each
, averaging out to six per boss.
On average, it will take 52 bosses on 10-player mode (6.5 clears) and 28 bosses on 25-player mode (3.5 clears) to finish this quest.
Report to Zazzo Twinklefingers in the ruins just southeast of Karazhan.
Your next target is the Black Dragon Nalice, who is engaged in some sort of arcane debauchery beneath the ruined tower of Karazhan.
Your primary mission is to destroy her, but if you can bring me back a vial of her blood, I'll be able to use it to augment the power of the daggers I've given you.
Your accomplice Zazzo has already been dispatched to the scene and awaits you there. He'll have more details.
Sneak into the Master's Cellar in the ruins around Karazhan, defeat Nalice, and acquire a
I've pinpointed Nalice to the Master's Cellar, an extended basement you'll find in the ruins up ahead.
Dragon cultists are everywhere, and Nalice has set up some strange arcane storage devices throughout the area. Perhaps you can use those to your advantage?
Sneak past the cultists, obliterate Nalice, and grab a vial of her blood for Wrathion.
I'll keep my eyes on you and pull you out if you get into any trouble. But I'm NOT coming in there with you!
, this quest has two components: a stealth mission and then a challenging encounter against a member of the Black Dragonflight.
Once again, Pathal has a great walkthrough for
The first part requires players to stealth into the Master's Cellar, using Sap and Distract as need be.
For the second part, the rogue will need to defeat Nalice, a 3-phase encounter. Rogues will need to use abilities often ignored against bosses to defeat Nalice--remember, you can respec to make this fight easier.
Phase 1/3 Abilities:
. Remove with
. Remove with

. Interrupt with
. Remove with
Phase 2 Abilities:
. Prevents the player from damaging Nalice, lasts all of phase 2. You will be ported to one side the room and must
over to two arcane pillars and disable them within 20 seconds, or you will die.
. Disabling one arcane control grants you a stack of this buff. It lasts 30 seconds and stacks.
. If both pillars aren't deactivated, this ability will activate and deal massive AOE, killing you.
Nalice alternates between Phase 1 and Phase 2 every 33%. At 33%, she goes into phase 3. This phase is essentially the same as Phase 1, with the addition of
. Simply move out of it--Nalice will keep following you.
Take the Vial of Preserved Dragonsblood, along with your daggers Fear and Vengeance, to Wrathion at Ravenholdt Manor in Hillsbrad Foothills.
<Zazzo performs an enchantment on the vial of blood, then quickly hands it back to you, as though it's toxic.>
Done! You'll want to get this back to Wrathion as soon as possible, along with those two daggers of yours.
I don't know what he plans to do with this stuff. Between you and me, sometimes that little dragon kid creeps me out. Good luck!
Stage 3: Fangs of the Father
This final stage requires the rogue to head back into Dragon Soul, assassinating dragons and finally Wrathion's father, Deathwing.
s from creatures in the Dragon Soul Raid encounter.
Do you understand why I have you assassinate the dragons, yet spare the mortals? It isn't their fault. They must seek out their own destiny, free from the meddling of my kind.
We are nearing the end of our mission, and it is time for you to seek out your own destiny as well. I can continue to augment your weapons, but collecting shadowy gems won't be enough. My work will require entire clusters. Gather them from my father's minions...
is the same item required for
(but if you are on
, you will be unable to open the cluster). If there are multiple rogues in the raid on different quest steps, either player (but not both) can loot the cluster for their quest step.
10-player bosses drop one cluster each, while 25-player bosses often drop two. Therefore, if you are lucky in a 25-player raid with cluster drops, it will take 4 full clears to finish this step. Rogues in 10-man groups will require 8 full clears.
Destroy Deathwing and retrieve a
Your next target has claimed the lives of all of my other assassins. I need you to kill my father himself.
You must destroy Deathwing.
We are out of time. His madness has already corrupted all the others of my kind, and his darkness will consume the world if he is not stopped.
If you by some miracle succeed, and can retrieve for me a piece of him - perhaps a fragment of the armor he uses to disguise his true chaotic nature - the reward I give you will be without equal.
Upon defeating Deathwing, there's a cutscene and some lore that we won't give away right now, but it's pretty neat!
Requires either Normal or Heroic difficulty for quest completion.
