Night Warrior's Curse - Night Fae Covenant Questline (Story Spoilers)
The Night Fae covenant questline continues the story of Tyrande on her path as the Night Warrior. In the Night Warrior's Curse chapter, we learn more about past Night Warriors, who may be instrumental in helping Tyrande maintain control of her dark powers.
WARNING: SHADOWLANDS STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
In this chapter, we are introduced to Thiernax, the Night Warrior from the planet of Fyzandi who saved his planet from a mysterious Dark God. While successful, the planet will take many generations to fully heal and Thiernax was unable to survive the sheer power of the Night Warrior. Attempting to lessen the burden, Qadarin tried to share the power of the Night Warrior but the ritual killed them both, sending their spirits to Ardenweald.
We learn several things in this chapter which could have far-reaching implications in future patches or expansions:
Elune is worshipped on multiple planets, not just Azeroth. We don't know her position on the cosmology chart, and her importance on other realms could indicate she is more powerful than we realize.
There are other planets with life and civilization in the cosmos we haven't yet explored.
isn't just a place for the mortal souls of Azeroth, but also for souls from these other worlds.
As the Dark God has similarities to Old Gods on Azeroth (many eyes, mouths, whispers, madness), it appears the forces behind the Old Gods have not just been attacking Azeroth, but other planets as well. While Titan forces were instrumental in imprisoning and defeating Old Gods on Azeroth, the planet of Fyzandi appears to have defeated the Dark God through a coalition of champions led solely by the power of the Night Warrior.
, we meet with a spirit in Ardenweald who was a Night Warrior in life, Thiernax. We find him in the Garden of Night, along with his husband Qadarin. Along the way, Shandris reminds us of the lore of the Night Warrior:
The Night Warrior is the embodiment of Elune's darkest face, the result of a dangerous and deadly ritual.
The one who performs it usually dies. Even witnesses are known to perish, such as Elune's power.
Tyrande lived. She fought for our people but... The power seems to be consuming her.
Shandris explains the situation to Thiernax, who is unsympathetic and runs off:
Shandris: In our time of need, my dearest friend took on the power of the Night Warrior--
Thiernax: Then her fate is sealed. My condolences, but you must let her go.
Thiernax: For your sake as well as hers.
Shandris: Thiernax, wait...
Qadarin explains how Thiernax has complicated feelings about the Night Warrior due to his own past as the Speaker of Elune, telling more of the story as you tend to the Queen's garden in
Qadarin: Please forgive my husband. Thiernax became the Night Warrior to save our world...but he paid a dear price in the end.
Qadarin: Thiernax knew the risks, but we had no choice.
Qadarin: He invoked the dark power of Elune, and together we repelled the invaders.
Qadarin: Thought we had saved our world, the power of the Night Warrior began to destroy him.
Shandris: As it threatens to destroy Tyrande...
Qadarin: Desperate to save him, we attempted to lessen his burden by sharing Elune's power between us.
Qadarin: But...our gambit failed. We both lost our lives. And he has blamed himself ever since.
We continue pruning the garden and ridding it of spriggan in
, meeting up with Thiernax. There's an unusually-high number of spriggan attacking and the leader, Sickleshanks, curses Qadarin with his dying breath.
, Thiernax asks us to help him find a cure, and in return, he will help us save Tyrande.
This curse holding Qadarin is powerful. But I will break it. <Thiernax snorts.> Death did not part us. I will not be torn from him now. <Thiernax studies you with serious eyes, glances at Shandris, then looks at you.> Help me save him and I will help you with this Night Warrior from your world. I do not promise I can save her, but I can promise I will try to help. Return to the hall and tell Lord Herne the situation. We will meet there.
We ask Lady Moonberry for help and she has us try various antidotes, but isn't successful. She then sends us to Archivist Dredyn at the Grove of Memory to determine what is the exact nature of the curse in
. The Archivist is willing to help but we learn in
that the spriggans have been stealing his scrolls.
Once we've identified the scroll, we return to Lady Moonberry who starts working on the counter curse. We gather the ingredients including
. Notably, the last ingredient requires us to speak to Alexstrasza, mourning the loss of her Prime Consort, Korialstrasz. When we find Alexstrasza, she is overjoyed to learn that Ysera survives and gives us
as the lost token of love:
Alexstrasza: Ysera...it brightens my heart to know her death was not an end, but a new beginning.
Alexstrasza: We were sisters hatched from the same clutch. Inseparable since birth.
Alexstrasza: Ysera speaks of Korialstrasz, whom I loved dearly...but I loved none more than her.
Alexstrasza: She gave me a gift when we first became Aspects. Take it with you, and save your friend.
Alexstrasza: And...please tell my sister that she is sorely missed, fondly remembered, and deeply loved.
Ysera is taken aback by
I haven't seen this in...
I gave this to her when we were new to our mantles. Our duties would draw us apart for the first time in our lives. Through all these ages she's kept it....
<Ysera wipes her eyes.>
I hope it will be of good use here.
With all the components for the counter curse collected, we perform the ritual on Qadarin in
. We are successful, and for our troubles we're awarded the Covenant cloak
. Thiernax is grateful for our support and pledges to help us aid Tyrande.
Thiernax: I know not if the Night Warrior's fate can be averted. But I will do all that I can to aid you.
Shandris: Thank you, Thiernax. And you, Qadarin. You are fortunate to have each other.
Thiernax: Yes, we are.
Now, when we talk to Thiernax and Qadarin, they share more about their tragic past and the Night Warrior:
Where did you come from?
My world was called Fyzandi. It was a beautiful world of vast forests, mighty mountains, and tranquil plains.
It was for these wilds we fought against the Dark God.
A dark god?
Yes. Some generations before I was born, the Dark God landed on our world.
The impact wiped out an entire kingdom and disrupted the balance of Nature. No one who ventured into the area returned from the wasteland.
We druids kept an eye on the borders but we did not anticipate what would come.
What came for you?
Creatures with too many eyes, too many limbs and too many hungering mouths. They swept across the world with my great-greatparents were children. Thus the Endless War began. Entire generations spent their lives holding against the Others and their madness.
It was my mother who discovered the nature of what lived in the crater. To slay the being from another world, she tried to invoke Elune's dark face. She did.
But you won, didn't you?
Thiernax was successful in becoming the Night Warrior. I fought beside him and the other champions of Fyzandi to the end. We won but at terrible cost.
The armies of madness killed many while we were away, then scattered when Dark One died. Some of our people succumbed to the whispers. They disappeared or went mad. We lost friends. Family.
The god bled. It will take many generations to cleanse the sickness from our world.
If it can ever be.
Why did you become the Night Warrior?
To fight a great evil which had slain many.
A coalition of champions had formed to kill the dark god who'd landed on our world. To succeed we needed the power the last Speaker had tried to invoke from Mother Moon.
<Thiernax chuckles sadly.>
We fought over that. It had already killed his mother. He did not wish for it to kill his husband too. But Elune's power was one of our greatest weapons against the monsters. So I did the ritual. Survived it. He stood by me. Our eyes dark as the new moons, we fought the monsters.
I did not foresee the cost.
What was the cost?
The price of Elune's dark power was my life.
Mortals are not meant to hold such things. One way or another, it would kill me. For my world, my people, my family, I was willing to make that sacrifice.
Qadarin was not so willing to let it happen. To my eternal regret, trying to share the burden killed us both.
I should let the past be. What matters is our world was saved and we are still together.
