Leveling Alts in Shadowlands - Is Threads of Fate Better than Replaying the Storyline Campaign?
Threads of Fate
is a new system in Shadowlands, allowing players who have already raised one character to maximum level to skip the campaign quests on future playthroughs, allowing alts to immediately join their covenant of choice, as well as granting access to world quests, anima collection, and all four leveling zones. In exchange, that character will no longer be able to do any campaign quests - only side quests, world quests, bonus objectives, and other standard methods of gaining experience. This "adventure mode" is a more free-form approach to alts, particularly for players who like to level via dungeons, battlegrounds, or even professions, but the question is whether it's strictly better than the traditional method of leveling alts through the Shadowlands storyline.
In short, no. It's not strictly better, although it is more flexible. With the Threads of Fate, you give up campaign quests for a sort of Adventure Mode which offers a greater range of content, but also results in focusing a lot more on repeat activities, some of which simply don't offer a competitive amount of experience or objective completion. The main draw is a head start on
collecting Anima for your Covenant
of choice, but while the system allows you to join a covenant early, it doesn't unlock all the end game activities - you only get the two abilities, without
, or access to the

How the Threads of Fate Work
When you enable the Threads of Fate, your campaign quests are replaced by four special campaign objectives:
, which award ~1/3 of a level and a weapon when completed. Virtually all activities contribute to completion, but not all at the same rate.
Rare mobs grant 3% each.
World Quest grant 4%.
Side quests grant 1% for breadcrumbs, 3% for normal quests, and 5% for group quests.
Bonus objectives grant 7%.
Dungeon quests give 10%, and bosses grant 3% each.
Of those contributions, side quests are the best open world activity, a bonus objectives take too long and world quests are much less efficient. Focusing on dungeons becomes the fastest means of completing the objective and thereby leveling up, but may burn you out on them after awhile.
Is Threads of Fate Faster?
Ultimately the decision to use the Threads of Fates is up to how you want to approach the game. Chaining dungeons and completing their quests can be about as fast as blazing through the campaign, making it an efficient (if somewhat repetitive) means of leveling new characters, though still not strictly better than the traditional approach. Some players even advocate a mix - starting off with the campaign and then turning on Threads of Fate part way through to skip the rest of the quests. That said, it's important to note that while you can activate the Threads of Fate at any time, you
cannot deactivate them
and reenable the campaign.
Pros for the Threads of Fate
Immediate access to the covenant of your choice.
Good for players who enjoy chaining dungeons.
The Shadowlands campaign is quite long and linear, which can become tedious after multiple times through.
Content is all scaled, making it good for groups of players who may not all be at the same level or place in the story.
Use Threads of Fate if
: you're tired of the campaign, prefer to chain dungeons (preferably with a group), or wish to level through professions.
Cons for the Threads of Fate
Slower than campaign questing.
Less efficient for solo quest-focused players, with a lot more time spent traveling around the map.
The amount of anima gained is fairly trivial, and the Covenants lack other end-game features such as the mission table, soulbinds, or conduits.
Don't use Threads of Fate if
: you primarily level solo via questing.
