Follower basics
Warlords of Draenor introduces
followers
to World of Warcraft along with garrison. Followers can be thought as garrison companion pets with a twist. They have unique
skill sets
and they can be leveled up to level 100 like the player; at maximum level item levels are unlocked to the followers. More importantly, followers can be sent out to do
garrison missions
which rewards vary from follower experience, gold, vanity items or even to raid-level epic items. From the garrison architect table, followers can also be assigned to your
garrison buildings
for unique bonuses or other benefits like a personal bodyguard! When followers aren't on a mission or working, they hang around in your garrison and you can ask them to come patrol with you. Patrolling followers help you fight monsters within your garrison perimeter, even during
garrison invasions
!

You can view your followers in the
Followers pane
after getting the garrison. The pane shows everything you need to know about your current followers, like skill set and experience, are they on a mission, working or just idling around in garrison. Followers pane also lists the followers you haven't yet found and some details where to get them.
Note that two "versions" of the followers pane exist: the
Garrison Followers
pane can be accessed
only
from the garrison command table; it allows you to manage your followers and view follower weapon and armor item levels at maximum follower level. The followers pane in
Garrison Report
pane on the other hand is available everywhere but it's only for browsing your followers:
There is no hard cap on the follower limit, but currently there is
a cap of 20 active followers
(
25 if you have
level 3 Barracks
in your garrison
). This cap prevents you from starting new missions if you have more active followers than you are allowed to. You need to reduce your number of active followers back to 20 (
25
) in order to send followers to missions again. You can't dismiss followers so deactivating is the only way to reduce active followers. It is worth mentioning that the
deactivation only becomes available if you have more followers than your current limit allows
. Inactive followers won't lose anything while being on the bench and once per day you can reactivate one of them for . You won't meet them in your garrison grounds either. The status of a follower can be changed from the
Command Table
in Town Hall:
There are several ways to get more followers to join your ranks. However, you can roughly divide followers into two "groups" based on the way how a follower is obtained:
- Followers awarded from quests or obtained some other way from the Warlords of Draenor content
- Followers recruited from the level 2 or higher

The difference of those groups is that followers gained from the
Inn/Tavern
are basically randomised followers with pre-generated names and classes and they aren't listed in the followers pane. The followers from the first group are obtained always the same way thus they are more static. If you are missing some of these follower, you can always check your followers pane which ones you can still recruit. But before delving more in how to get followers, lets first see what makes the followers tick.
Quality
Followers come with
abilities
and
traits
. Abilities are to used to counter enemy
threats
in garrison missions and traits give followers different bonuses or special counters for missions or allows them to be assigned into a level 2 garrison building. Every follower will have at least one ability and one trait. The
quality
of a follower defines how many abilities and traits it is possible for the follower to have:
Uncommon
1 ability, 1 trait
Rare
1 ability, 2 traits
Epic
2 abilities, 3 traits
Legendary
3 abilities, 3 traits
Currently there is only one
legendary
follower in the game and no means to get more of them.
The quality definitions apply to both to the predefined followers who are obtained always the same way (
from quest/achievement/etc.
) and to the followers acquired from the
Lunarfall Inn / Frostwall Tavern
. The predefined followers have always
at least one fixed ability
and sometimes they might also have a fixed trait. The remaining free ability or trait slots allowed by quality are always randomized upon obtaining a follower or when the follower's quality gets upgraded. Followers from Inn/Tavern work the same way: they'll have the ability or trait which you chose and the rest of the skill set will be randomized.
For instance, lets take a look at the famous
Nat Pagle
. His skill set consists of

By definition, a rare follower has one ability and two traits. Nat has only one of each, so when you manage to get him join to your garrison, he will get a random second trait. Further, when Nat gets upgraded to epic quality, he will gain one random ability and one random trait more!
Quality upgrades
It is possible for a
predefined follower
to come as better quality as they would normally be, just like with item upgrades. When a follower is gained, there's a chance that they will be upgraded to a higher quality (
also applies to the followers bought from the faction vendors
). So if you are lucky, an uncommon follower can directly get upgraded to an epic follower! The extra ability and traits gained from the upgrade are randomized at the same time.
There's no need to worry or ditch the poor follower if they don't receive the epic-quality random upgrade. Because after reaching level 100, the non-epic followers continue to
gain experience to upgrade their quality
for better. So an uncommon follower gets first upgraded to rare and eventually to epic-quality follower. Note that
it isn't possible
to bump a follower to legendary quality the same way.
Finally, there's one item in-game which will instantly upgrade a follower to epic-quality.
剑圣项链
is a reward from the final questline in the weekly garrison campaign, but use it wisely as the item can only be used once. Learn more from the Garrison campaign and it's rewards from the

Race and class
Every follower will naturally have a race and a class with talent specialization. By default, follower's
race
doesn't have any impact on mission outcome (
especially on single follower missions
) but with a proper trait it can help completing a mission requiring a party. For instance, when
follower A
is a worgen and is partied up with
follower B
having
狼犬伙伴
which, in this case, increases the chance to win the mission. Some followers come with a race from the non-playable races in World of Warcraft.
The class and talent specialization defines what kind of class-related abilities are available to a follower when an ability is being randomly rolled to them. The amount of available abilities per class varies to some extent. Within a class there are usually some abilities which every talent specialization can get and abilities which only certain spec can have. While there are almost 80 different abilities, there are only nine enemy threats that needs to be countered. This means there will be several classes out there being able to counter some certain enemy threat.

Abilities and threats
The main purpose of
abilities
is to counter enemy
threats
in the missions. In a mission there can be up to three enemies and each of these enemies can have up to three threats that needs to be countered in order to complete the mission bonus objective with a higher chance of success. The game will roll each opponent separately in order and
if any of these rolls fail, the mission bonus objective also fails
.
Of course there are also other factors that contribute to the success chance, namely
traits
,
follower level
and later on
item level
. Missions mechanics aren't part of this guide but it's worth mentioning that
if follower's level is lower than the enemy's
, the abilities and traits from that follower contribute less to the mission success chance. These low-level followers will also gain less XP from the missions - down to 10% if the difference is 3 or more. In this case, the follower
won't counter any threats
either. The same thing applies at maximum level when item levels come into the equation:
if the follower's item level is below the enemy's item level
, the follower's
contribution to mission success
starts to diminish along with the experience gain. In both cases, the player is informed with an -icon in the mission screen if they are about to send a low-level follower to a mission.

If a garrison has 10 or more followers, either of the followers panes will show a row of clickable icons for each threat. These icons will tell how many followers in the roster can counter the respective threat. It is also possible to filter followers with these icons to show only followers which can counter the selected threat.
In the next sub-section are all the abilities currently available to each class and what threats those abilities counter. If an ability is limited only to certain talent specialization, an icon equivalent to that talent spec is shown after the ability. All abilities are based on the respective playable class so they follow the general concept of a class or talent specialization. For example, rogue followers don't have taunt-like abilities to counter
Wild Aggression
or restoration shaman followers can't have

It's worth to mention that in some rare cases it is possible for some certain classes and specializations to get two abilities to counter the same certain threat. For example, a demonology warlock follower can get

which both counter Timed Battle. While this can be annoying, it isn't necessarily a bad thing as some of the high item levels missions can have threats which need to be countered more than once like in

can be really helpful when looking for certain threat counters if you don't want to spent much time figuring out which class & spec combo are you after. It offers various filters which can narrow down the results in several ways. For example, you can easily look for
followers
who can counter both Wild Aggression and Powerful Spell and who aren't recruited from the
Inn / Tavern
.

Traits
Traits
grant followers special perks or bonuses and they aren't tied to the follower's class. Traits can also affect the mission success chance as each mission has an extra condition which can be countered with traits. This condition is said on the
Type
in the mission screen and it's either a
race
or a
terrain
that needs to be countered. Countering it doesn't have as steep impact on mission success rate as countering the enemy threats but it can make a difference. There are also other special traits,
Party buffs
, which help boosting your mission success rate or shorten the mission duration for example. Like with abilities, if a follower is too low-level compared to the enemy, traits won't counter the mission type nor party buffs will be active.
Followers can also have
Profession traits
like
采矿
. Most of the level 2 and 3 garrison buildings allows you to assign a follower to them if the follower has the proper trait for it.
Assigning a follower
to a building grants some
extra benefits
to the building. These benefits vary depending on the profession. For example, most of the times assigned follower increases the building's work order output, but it can also give you access to some special bonus items or daily quests. Followers with a profession trait also boosts the success chance in the respective profession missions.
Follower assignment

Architect Table
. Placing or removing followers is free and there is no cooldown for either action.
On top of those,

trait allows a follower to be assigned to

. The follower will then work with you in the field, helping you to kill mobs. These followers will also have

which can be raised by killing enemies that yield XP. Higher reputation unlocks some nifty perks like

Trait restrictions and exceptions
There are no limitations to traits class-wise as in no trait is limited only to some certain class. Race-wise you can get
矮人血脉
to a dwarf etc. but the trait's effect won't trigger from the follower itself. You can also get Racial Preference traits for races from the opposing faction.
A handful of traits are
limited
to certain followers. For example,

comes only on
certain followers
and
林木长青
exists only on
Phylarch the Evergreen
. These traits won't appear randomly on any other follower, let it be some predefined follower or a recruit from the Inn/Tavern.
Over half of the limited traits are also
permanent traits
. When a trait is marked as permanent, it can't be removed from a follower no matter what. This an useful feature especially when using the
follower related items
which modify follower traits. For example, you don't have to worry about losing

Among the limited and permanent traits, there are also
exclusive traits
. A follower can't ever have more than one exclusive trait out of all the other exclusive traits. These kind of traits are almost solely profession traits with few other traits so you can can forget of having a follower with three profession traits!
Note
: exclusive traits appear only as the
first
trait. This means that if your uncommon or rare follower didn't initially have an exclusive trait, they won't get one upon quality upgrades either.
Besides those few exceptions above, every follower can get any trait when a random trait is being rolled, let it be a follower from Inn/Tavern or some quest reward follower with non-fixed traits. Below are all such traits followers can have (
other traits do exist but followers can't get them
).

It is worth mentioning that some of the traits above aren't unique i.e. their effect stacks. These traits are all Racial Preference traits and most of the Party Buffs. So basically having two followers with
狼犬伙伴
in a party with a worgen follower, increases the mission success rate respectively from the both racial traits.

Building assignment
Followers with approriate (
profession
) traits can be assigned to the respective level 2 and 3 buildings in your garrison for extra bonuses, like stated in the
traits section
above. As a general bonus
for level 100 followers
, the follower will always
double the yield from work orders for small profession buildings
when a follower is assigned to a building. The chance to get double yield per work order is dependent on the follower level:
50% chance at follower level 90, 100% at level 100
. Follower quality however doesn't affect to the bonus. For other garrison buildings, the bonus to the work order yield varies (
Lumber Mill for example gets 50% more to the yield
).
By default for profession buildings, single work order creates one special crafting ingredient, like
炼金催化剂
. With a level 100 follower assigned to the respective building, the yield is naturally two per finished work order. For the bonus chance, the follower's presence in the building
is checked on when the work order completes
. Thus it's worthwhile to keep a follower permanently assigned to building since workers also gain experience from every completed work order (
1,800 XP per order at follower level 100
). This XP is applied upon retrieving the work order(s).
NOTE: The XP gain from work orders is currently bugged (25.2.); the experience isn't awarded sometimes at all to the working follower when retrieving work orders.
It's useful to level up followers with profession traits to maximize the work order yield so the experience gained from work orders is needed to help leveling assigned followers because when a follower is working on some building, they can't be send out for missions.
Assigning followers to buildings
A follower is assigned to a building from the
Architect Table
found from the garrison Town Hall. You'll first need to click the building you want to place a worker; the building description appears to the top part of the window along with a new button. When you click the button, you are presented the followers eligible for the assignment to the building in question on the left side of the window. After you click some follower, their portrait is now shown in the button you clicked earlier. This tells you the follower is now working in the selected building.
Removing
the worker works the similar way; you first select a building from the
Architect Table
which then displays the worker who is currently working in that building. You will notice a small cancel sign icon () next to the follower's portrait. Clicking this icon will remove the worker from the building.
There are no cost or cooldown when assigning followers to buildings or removing them from buildings.
Additional building benefits from assigning followers
It was mentioned earlier that when a follower is assigned to a small profession building, they will double the work order yield (
at follower level 100
) and gives some extra yields to other buildings' work orders. Assigned followers grant almost always some other benefits to the player as well. It's worth mentioning that these benefits are also available to players visiting your garrison. For example, if you have assigned a follower to the Enchanter's Study, your visitors can get some special glow to their weapons as well!
Below is listed plot-wise what are the bonuses for assigning a follower to some certain building and what predefined followers have the trait needed for the assignment.

: Unless excluded specifically, you can also recruit more followers with the profession trait in question from the
Inn / Tavern
for your needs.

Leveling and item level
Follower leveling is pretty straight-forward: you send your followers to missions and they gain experience until they reach the next level, up to level 100. At maximum level item level 600 is set to every follower and followers continue to accumulate experience if their quality is uncommon or rare. After reaching the next
Upgrade level
, their quality is upgraded by a notch, up to epic. Beyond epic quality, a follower doesn't gain anything from the gained experience.
All the followers in a mission will always get the base mission experience
. Even if the mission fails and you won't get the extra mission reward, you won't still leave empty-handed. Of course you'll want successfully complete the missions for their various rewards but sometimes you can test your luck and send a follower to a mission without a proper counter ability if you want the base XP. Keep in mind though, that
any follower whose level is below the enemy level won't gain the full experience from the mission
. This level difference penalty affects both to the base experience and to the follower XP rewards. At first the XP gain is halved and if the difference becomes 3 or more, only 10% of the gained experience is rewarded from that mission to the follower. This means, for instance, that even though you can carry lowbie followers in party missions with your level 100 crew, they'll gain substantially less from them. If you are about to send a low-level follower to a mission, an indicator of this is shown in the mission screen.
Followers assigned as workers to garrison buildings accumulate experience too. Every completed work order yields the follower some experience based on their level (
1,800 XP per order at follower level 100
). This experience is applied to the follower upon retrieving the work order(s).
NOTE: The XP gain from work orders is currently bugged (25.2.); the experience isn't awarded sometimes at all to the working follower when retrieving work orders.
There are few traits which boost the follower XP gain, namely

It's good to keep in mind while leveling your followers that the levels of your followers affect what level missions will be generated to your Command Table. If you have a follower in the level range
90-94
, level 90-94 missions will be generated and likewise, having a follower in the level range
95-99
, guarantees that level 95-99 missions will be available. The same goes with level 100 and actually applies later on to item levels as well; getting a follower to a certain item level threshold (
615/630/645/660/675
), unlocks missions from that tier and makes them appear on the mission pool every now and then. Note that level 95-99 missions continues to appear despite having all your active followers at level 100.

Item level
Each follower has
weapon
and
armor
item levels which both start at
item level 600
and can be raised
up to 675
. After a follower has reached level 100, the item level becomes visible in the followers pane (
only in the Command Table view
) and you can start raising follower's
item level
which is
the average
of weapon and armor item levels. Higher item level unlocks more difficult missions for your followers. These new missions are unlocked once one of your followers has reached item level 615, 630, 645 and finally 660. Two of latter tiers unlock rare raid missions that award raid-level gear from
Cache of Highmaul Treasures
and
Blackrock Foundry Spoils
. A handful of
item level 675 missions
exist too, but unlike previous tiers, they don't award epic items.
Note that similar restriction applies to item level which affects to the follower level:
if the follower's item level is below the enemy's item level
, the follower becomes gradually deadweight in the mission; their experience gain starts to diminish and they contribute less to the mission success chance. Follower is useless against opponents when item level difference is 15 or more item levels. An icon is also displayed in the mission screen to indicate this.

Items offer your followers one-time boost to the item level as described when used. To use one, first use the item and then target the follower's model from the either of the follower panes. A confirmation prompt will appear to ensure you won't upgrade a wrong follower. You
can't use
upgrades on followers who are currently on a mission. Upgrade items can't either be used after reaching the
maximum item level
which is currently
675
.
Boosting the item level also upgrades your followers' weapons visually. The higher the item level, the fancier the weapon follower wields is. It's currently unknown what weapons followers can gain as upgrades and what followers are eligible for upgrades as every follower doesn't seem to get new weapons on higher item levels. Note that using
桑克苏
on a follower doesn't affect the weapon appearance of that follower.

Bodyguards
Certain followers (
and only them
) have the

trait. This allows the follower to be
assigned
to level 2 or higher

in your garrison. When stationed there, the follower stands just outside the barracks entrance where you can go pick him as a personal bodyguard!
The follower will accompany you to
Draenor zones
and help you fight monsters (
bodyguards won't follow you into instances, scenarios or battlegrounds
). You can't however control what they attack (
they should prefer your current target though
) or tell them to stop attacking the current target; you can always try to run away far enough from the follower, when the combat drops, the follower should reappear next to you. Nonetheless, this can be somewhat annoying because being unable to control the follower tends to get them killed and
when a follower dies, it takes them an hour to resurrect at your barracks
. While the timer might feel long, you can always temporarily assign another follower for bodyguard duty from your barracks while waiting for the first one to come back alive.
You don't have to worry about your leveling your bodyguard followers as
their level scales up automatically with the character level
and later on they keep scaling based on the player item level (
note that raising the follower item level
doesn't
affect to the bodyguard's damage output
). In fact, you should mostly see level 100 bodyguards roaming around as assigning one requires
level 2 or higher Barracks
; it can be unlocked while leveling towards level 100 but due to the upgrade resource cost, most players can't probably upgrade Barracks to level 2 that early on. Furthermore, level isn't the only thing bodyguards mimic; when you stealth, they will stealth and if you mount up, they will also jump on a horse (
or kodo
).
When killing enemies
in your level range
(
not indicated as "gray mobs"
) with your bodyguard, the follower will gain
10 reputation
(
can't be increased with guild banners
) towards their personal reputation, kind of like
阡陌客
NPCs. At the base reputation level (
Bodyguard
) follower uses basic abilities typical to their class. After gaining 10,000 reputation, the second reputation level (
Trusted Bodyguard
) is achieved and your bodyguard will learn a new ability from a quest. The third level (
Personal Wingman
) is reached after another 10k reputation. This unlocks a follower related quest which rewards a new perk to the follower. These perks vary from
a personal mailbox
to
a pocket summoner
. The reputation progress is tracked like any other faction reputation and you won't have to start over if you swap between the bodyguards.

). Next the game will generate three

) level 90 followers. Each of them will have an ability approriate to their class and spec which counters the threat you selected
or
the trait you selected. The remaining free abilities and/or traits are randomly chosen as well. Congratulations, you have just earned yourself a new follower for free!
The Soulare exception
It's not entirely accurate to say that the followers from Inn/Tavern are 100% random. There exists one minor exception to this rule and he is
Soulare of Andorhal
who some might find familiar from Dark Souls. Soulare can be acquired randomly when śeeking followers to counter Wild Aggression.
Follower-wise Soulare doesn't break any rules but otherwise he offers few things other followers don't. Firstly, if you emote
/tired
to him, he will offer you an addition to your toybox:

Followers from Draenor zones
The next few sections of this guide list the group of followers which are less prone to the random factor. Most of them aren't entirely unique though; in theory, similar followers could also be recruited from the Inn/Tavern if their skill sets matched. There are quite many followers that players can recruit while leveling towards level 100 and you can always check from the followers pane which you are still missing.
Follower-related outpost choices (
Gorgrond/Talador/Spires of Arak
) aren't permanent. You can always pay to change your zone outpost and gain access to the other set of quests and followers tied to that choice. Level 100 required in order to do the change which is made from the outpost’s foreman NPC.
If you do not want to change an outpost or you want to enlist a follower who you failed to get from a mission/got left behind due to the quest choice in the first Draenor zone (
Shadowmoon/Frosfire
), you can always buy those followers from the contracts vendor in
level 3 Garrison

Items for followers
This short, appendix-like section is a compilation of every follower-related item (
except Contracts
) currently in-game. The items are grouped by their use. More items will be added when they become available.
How to use the items
Follower related items are used the same way despite the item. First, you'll open either of the Followers panes and find the target follower. Next you search the item from your bags, right-click on it and use it on the follower model - kind of like some quest items are used. A confirmation prompt is shown to make sure you won't accidentally use the item on a wrong follower. You can't however use items on followers who aren't available e.g. away on a mission. Lastly, even if the follower item level isn't visible in the Garrison Report's followers pane, you can still use the item level upgrade items on followers.

Upcoming follower changes
This part of the guide will cover the upcoming changes and features regarding followers. Information is mostly gathered here from Wowhead but also from various blue posts from
Twitter
and official forums (

). Sources will be provided if possible, but rest assured, the section will only contain confirmed information. Some assumptions may occur but they will be marked with blue.
Due to being unreleased content, everything stated below is subject for a change!
No follower-related changes announced since 6.1 which changes are already implemented to the guide.

Follower tab has clickable icons for each threat counter. Icons tell how many followers you have that can counter the respective threat and furthermore, you can filter followers by threat counters with the icons. This feature will be available for garrison with 10 or more followers.
Follower item level upgrading has changed a bit: you now need to use the item on follower's model and then accept a prompt in order to upgrade the item level.
If a follower's level/item level is below the mission requirement and thus will receive reduced XP, a new icon will indicate this.
Changes with unknown schedule
Follower assignment bonus will be changed so that a follower must be present in the building
when a work order completes
in order to get the benefit (
currently follower presence is checked only when you collect work orders

About this guide
First and foremost, this guide was written during the last months of WoD beta test. There probably might be few things wrong here and there and I've made some assumptions how certain things work with followers. I'll however keep on updating this guide when I find something that's bugged, missing or wrong. Naturally I'll appreciate any corrections and suggestions relating this guide.
