Diablo IV's Senior Producer Tiffany Wat and Executive Producer Allen Adham sat down with The Telegraph to talk about the hands-on preview of Diablo IV. They talked about the return to Diablo's darker roots, open-world play, cross-play between platforms (and plans for future generation console games!), and even the importance of sets and legendaries in Diablo IV.

Interview Highlights
The main highlight of this interview is that the Diablo IV team is working on Cross-Play between different platforms! Cross-Play was teased at many points through Diablo III's lifespan but never really came to be, but the development team is working hard for Cross-Play to be a reality by Diablo IV's launch.
As I work through a quest for a townswoman to find a missing boy, a couple of events with suggested levels pop up on the map to go off and plunder. There isn’t the time to see how fundamentally this will change the game, but Diablo is one of the original treasure-hunting dungeon crawlers; having its own meet-cutes for loot makes perfect sense.
And those meet-ups might happen across different platforms if the developers have their way. “We're very excited about cross-play,” says Adham. “There are technical details and details to work through with the first parties, but it's our goal to get to cross-play.”
Other interview highlights include:
Although Diablo has returned to a darker philosophy, it still feels very familiar to play, and thus really good.
Monster death animations have been improved with layered animations - Barbarians are able to easily decapitate them, or the Sorceress can easily roast the flesh off their bone or freeze and shatter them into a million pieces
The Diablo IV cinematic was made darker on purpose, both as a creator (and fan) desire and to serve as a counterpoint to Overwatch's colorful optimism in Blizzard's lineup of games.
Diablo IV's world is one continuous open space rather than the zones used in Diablo III, and you will be able to roam through maps and find co-op pals or even strangers in certain areas.
Full sets are still desirable to buff your characters, but legendaries will offer modified or even entirely new skills to inflict chaos. Gear appearances are also improved to make your character more stylish in battle.
Diablo IV's release still has a ways to go, and the development team is working on a lot of other features, such as competitive action like PvP battles.
Although Diablo IV has currently been announced for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the development team is looking forward to try to extend to next-generation consoles, although there is nothing specific to announce right now on that end.
