Chains of Domination Final Chapter Confirms Fan Theory About The Jailer (Spoilers)
A theory about the Jailer's original purpose in the Shadowlands has been confirmed with the release of the final Chains of Domination story chapter:
Chapter 9 - What Happens Next
. Unlike the previous eight chapters, this questline never appeared on the PTR, meaning this is the first time we are learning this information.
Warning, spoilers from the latest Chains of Domination chapter ahead.
For some time, it's been wondered what Zovaal's original purpose was in the Shadowlands - before he was condemned to the Maw to act as the Jailer. When Zovaal takes the Arbiter's sigil during the Sanctum of Domination raid,
it fits neatly into his chest cavity
and clearly empowers him. This - along with the fact that the Arbiter appears to be a construct - has lead many to wonder if Zovaal was the original Arbiter.
A conversation between Highlord Bolvar Fordragon and the Primus has officially confirmed this theory - Zovaal was, indeed, the original Arbiter, tasked with the duty of judging souls that enter the Shadowlands. After condemning him to the Maw, the other Eternal Ones used his anima to create the new Arbiter construct.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Primus, what we witnessed in the Arbiter's chamber, it was... beyond mortal understanding.
The Primus says: Once, Zovaal stood among us as the Arbiter. Yet he defied the will of the First Ones and sought to unmake the balance of the cosmos.
The Primus says: For his crimes, we stripped our brother of his power and bound him to the Maw. It was I who scribed the runes of Domination upon his flesh.
The Primus says: We used Zovaal's anima to construct a new Arbiter, one that would be dispassionate and just.
The Primus says: I should have realiized that he would never stop fighting to reclaim his power... and see his schemes through to their bitter end.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: What will his next move be?
The Primus says: Zovaal pursuels the secrets locked within the Sepulcher. Should he find the knowledge he seeks, all that you know will be undone.
The Primus says: Four sigils represent the renewed hope of the covenants. I will use them to forge a key... though I must find something to replace the Arbiter's sigil.
Zovaal has often claimed to have been betrayed by the other Eternal Ones. In a story in
Folks & Fairy Tales of Azeroth
, he is shown to be bitter and mistrusting of family as a result of this perceived betrayal.
"Family is only a title for those who can hurt you more piercingly than the rest," he said, and his voice was soft suddenly, as soft as the dust left at the end of destruction. "My blood kin betrayed me to this fate. I would not take a single step for the sake of their souls. Nor should you. There is no balm to be found in the blood that binds, only the blood that is spilled. You must go. Courage cannot be found here."
He also compared the hole in his chest to the one that Vereesa Windrunner felt in her own after her sister, Sylvanas, died at the hands of Arthas.
"I have a hole in my heart like that," I said gently.
His glowing eyes burned expressionlessly into mine. Hot orange sparks from the million fires of the wasteland tumbled through the air, disappearing into the chasm of his chest.
Everyone does, he said slowly. "It is only that mine is easy to see."
