Argent Tournament Spotlight: Grand Tournament Card Origins
Many of you are probably playing the Grand Tournament this week in Hearthstone, so we're taking a closer look at the Argent Tournament which inspired all of the new cards. A few weeks ago, we covered the

, but this post primarily looks at the specific references to each card--the
raid, jousting, dailies, and more.
If you're not playing Hearthstone, this can be a fun nostalgia trip--or perhaps you'll learn something new if you've started playing after Wrath of the Lich King!

Trial of the Grand Crusade
was the third major raid tier in Wrath of the Lich King. The raid took place in the center of the Coliseum, where players fought various opponents to prove their worth to their faction leaders such as watching on the sidelines. A announced each new challenge for your raid.
Each set of tier armor was named after a famous lore figure--browse the full list
. This raid was also unique in that armor from different difficulties looked the same--the only distinctions were between the Alliance and Horde.
also had a unique limited attempts mechanic. On hardmode, players were only allowed 50 attempts to complete the zone. Clearing with more attempts remaining awarded better loot.
Clearing Heroic 10-player mode with no wipes awarded

Participants in the realm-first clear of ToGC with 50 attempts remaining received
and the title. This is also the name of one of the new cards - .
A perfect run on 25-player mode with 0 deaths awarded
The first encounter, Northrend Beasts, was a three-part encounter:
's main ability was to throw
onto players which would interrupt spellcasting and spawn fire. 's effect refers to the encounter spiraling out of control with more snobolds up, and references his adds.
are s players fight at the same time.
which entirely paralyzes players over time, and destroys minions that take damage.
on players that deals AoE fire damage, and deals 1 damage to all other minions each turn.
's signature abilities are
, in which he knocks everyone back and then charges at a random player. This was a frequent cause of failed Immortality attempts. In Hearthstone, has 10 attack and can only charge minions.
The second encounter starts when the cocky warlock
summons a doomguard to impress the Alliance and Horde. 's effect is to make cards you draw from your Hero Power cost (0), imitating his ease at summoning. Unfortunately,
who is too powerful for him, (and also a
). The new card refers to Jaraxxus crushing
The third encounter was a gigantic group of enemy champions that would try to CC, use their PvP trinkets, and heal each other. Cards that fit these faction champions are , , , , , ,
had Dark and Light polarities. Players with one essence had to avoid the other color's orbs, or else they'd take damage! These polarities led to some raid members taking more damage than others, or dealing more damage. In Hearthstone, both of these cards have a special effect when targeted - deals damage, grants Divine Shield.
For the final encounter, players faced
, falling to a secret underground chamber after the floor was shattered. This lurking threat is referenced in . One of the major challenges of the fight was dealing with the constant Nerbian adds that would spawn--which is basically 's Deathrattle.
Trial of the Crusade
was a short dungeon that awarded
and epics. In this dungeon, players fought randomly-selected faction champions, a member of the Argent Crusade, and a surprise guest.
The Grand Champions resemble the faction-specific vendors that sell you mounts, pets, and armor in the tents outside.
ability, which summons a villain from past expansions. 's card effect summons a random legendary minion.
abilities which make players feel pretty helpless. 's card effect sets the Attack of all enemy minions to 1.
, the final encounter, was a surprise guest and agent of the LIch King. Players fight him as a Forsaken, Skeleton, and Wraith. is a direct reference to the second stage of this encounter, and the flavor text pokes fun at how he's defeated.
Jousters and Aspirants
Jousting is the major activity at the Argent Tournament. Players champion each faction by demonstrating their success in jousting, and several dailies require players to joust as well. First, players train jousting (, ) via
to champion a faction. They then complete dailies for a faction and amass 25
, which allows them to summon a defeat a difficult jousting champion in
The Valiant's Challenge
. Being a Champion unlocks Argent Crusade dailies and lets you repeat the process of gaining favor with another faction ().
Championing each available faction and hitting Exalted with them as well as the Argent Crusade awards

The Argent Tournament Grounds featured pavilions for the Alliance and Horde (Silver Covenent, Sunreaver), the Argent Tournament Pavilion, various rings for jousters, mounts, vendors, and other flavor NPCs.
runs the Argent Tournament, and is the first person you speak to when signing up for the Tournament. In Hearthstone, upgrades your Hero Power. You'll then sign up to champion a particular faction by talking to a .
In the center of the Argent Tournament lies the colisseum which houses the
raid. The act of organizing and starting a raid relates to and . Outside the tournament are captured bosses you'll fight inside, which are guarded by .
When you become a Champion for a faction, you unlock vendors who sell you faction-themed rewards. Several cards represent these prizes: for

Argent Tournament Dailies
The main way to earn
was by completing various
dailies at the Argent Tournament
. Some of these quests required you to be a champion of a particular faction, while others were open to all.
