Addons Can Be Installed and Updated Without Closing the Game
which made its way into the game with the launch of the Shadowlands Prepatch, the
command now recognizes changes to .toc file metadata, allowing players to install, update, and remove addons without closing the game client!
why these changes now work:
Yes. The limitation all these years was the .toc file. When WoW starts, it searches and loads all .toc files once. WoW would not recognize any new .toc files or changes to already loaded ones, so any new addons were not recognized and addons with new files or changed file/folder structure would break if you updated and then reloaded. Now, WoW reloads loaded .toc files and searches for new ones on reload.
A .toc file is the core of any addon. It's the file that tells WoW this folder is an addon, the addon's name, and what files to load.
It has always worked as long as the update didn't make any changes to the .toc file. Now, updates work even if changes are made to the .toc file! So it works for updates even more reliably now.
TSM was an example of an addon that regularly updated its .toc file and usually required a client restart whenever you updated that addon. That should no longer be the case!
Remember, a lot of addons need to be updated to work properly in
, so if you have logged into the game and are suffering from FPS spikes, lag, or other issues, it's very likely caused by an out of date addon! You can always update your addons manually, but if you're looking for a convenient way to keep track of all your updates, check out one of the many available
to help automate the process. While you're there, you might even find some
to try in Shadowlands!
