s were introduced on patch 7.0 as a reward from Legion Invasions and used to purchase entry-level gear and transmog pieces during the Legion pre-patch. They now make a return, in patch 7.2, as a currency used on the Broken Shore, similar on how
worked on Warlords of Draenor or
in the Timeless Isle.
Why Should I Acquire Nethershards?
s will have a lot of different uses in the Broken Shore. With it you can buy:
All cosmetic rewards from
.
Dauntless
tokens, which are a good way to catch up if your gear is behind.
Transmog Weapon Arsenals
for
s and
s.
Extra attempts for Challenge Appearances
.
It is important to mention that you can only attempt for the Challenge Artifact Appearances while the
Mage Tower
is up, which lasts only
three days per construction
. That means you'll want to stockpile some
s to get as many chances as possible if you're looking after those new appearances.
Note that the previous Nethershard vendor from level 100 invasions doesn't sell any items anymore.
Acquiring Nethershards
s can be acquired in many different ways:
0 -0
from killing normal enemies under the Sentinax in the Broken Shore or in Legion Invasions.
100 -0
from killing Rare Enemies in the Broken Shore or Elites in Legion Invasions.
10 -0
from looting Wyrmtongue Chests in the Broken Shore.
~5
from acquiring
and doing a Broken Shore buildings turn-in.
200 -0
from killing Sentinax Bosses.
5
from completing Normal Legion Invasion World Quests.
0
from completing Elite Legion Invasion World Quests.
900 -0
from completing the Final Scenario of a Legion Invasion.
100 -0
from
1 -0
from
's Chests
It is also noteworthy to mention that sometimes when the
Nether Disruptor
is up, you can get the buff
, which can give you bonus
s every time you loot them.
Spending Nethershards
Most items acquired in the Broken Shore's NPCs use
s as a currency, ranging from reputation locked vanity items to gear tokens. They are also required for the quest
, which is part of the
achievement. There are plenty of items to be acquired with them:

Farming Nethershards
The easiest way to farm
s is by completing the World Quests from Legion Invasions that can appear in Azsuna, Val'sharah, Highmountain and Stormheim. When each zone is taken over by demons, there will usually be around 6 World Quests up in the zone, 4 normal ones, rewarding 5
each, and 2 elite ones, rewarding 0
each. When you enter the zone being invaded, you'll receive a quest to
repel the Legion Invasion
, which requires you to complete 4 World Quests in the zone. After that, the follow up quest will lead you to the final invasion scenario of the zone, which rewards 900 to 0
at the end.
The problem with Invasions is that there isn't always an invasion up and even when there is one you can finish them up pretty quickly, making them a good source of
s, but not able to be farmed. In order to farm them, the best way is the Sentinax.
The Sentinax
The Sentinax is a Legion command ship that patrols the Broken Shore, sending in backup troops to certain areas when necessary. Whenever the Sentinax is patrolling an area, you'll be able to loot Sentinax Beacons from nearby enemies. Those beacons can be used to cause the Sentinax to open demonic portals, which spawn more difficult creatures. Those creatures drop
s and crafting materials, as well as more powerful beacons that, in turn, summon even more powerful creatures.
Make sure to avoid the
, a laser beam fired by the Sentinax that will kill players.
In order to start looting Sentinax Beacons, you must complete the quest
, which is started by
that drops from enemies currently in the Sentinax area. After that, everytime you're in the same area as the Sentinax, you'll receive the buff
which allows you to loot Sentinax beacons. The Sentinax changes location roughly every 3 hours.
There are five different types of beacons:
Uncommon Beacons (solo):
Rare Beacons (small group):
Epic Beacons (large group to defeat elite):
- Summons
- Summons
- Summons
- Summons
- Summons
- Summons
The Lieutentants from the epic beacons also drop multiple beacons for every player involved into their demise!
There are also some beacons with profession benefits:
- Commands the Sentinax to fire a Bloodstrike at your current location, unearthing Blood of Sargeras. Deals 160% of maximum health as Chaos damage over 4 sec.
- Commands the Sentinax to fire a Petrum beam at your current location, turning everything in the area to felslate.
- Commands the Sentinax to fire a Fel Seed at your current location, causing starlight roses to rapidly grow.
And Wowhead user
Polygnom
found a fifth type of beacon that seem to drop only from Elites spawned by epic beacons.:
All attack beacons have a
15 minutes duration
, which means you need to get to the area and use them within 15 minutes. They spawn a couple of mobs (~3 for most of them) and can be soloed. They drop 200 Nethershards for the person that used the beacon.
While in the same area as the Sentinax, you're able to tag and receive loot from enemies in the same manners as World Quests do, which means you don't need to rely into getting lucky and looting beacons to get
s, you just need to participate in killing those creatures which any member of your faction. Being in a group is recommended to maximize the amount of beacons looted and enemies tagged.
Currently, only around 10 players can loot
from a same mob, even if in the same group.
Once the Sentinax summons a boss, it enters in a recharge window for 3 minutes, rendering you unable to use beacons for that period of time.
There are two achievements related to the Sentinax:
and
.
Wyrmtongue Chests
Soon as you settle your base in the Broken Shore, you can find a Goblin right outside Deliverance Point's ramp that will have the quest
available. The quest starts a short chain:
Each quest rewards you with a better "ancient artifact with exorbitant value" which opens the next step after 2 to 3 days. If you need help with any step of the chain, you can go to the comments on that specific quest to find more help, user
Boxofbeer
put up handy videos for most of the quest!
The final quest for "saving"
rewards you with
, in turn for 0
. This key allows you to open a Wyrmtongue Chest in the Broken Shore. Finishing it also unlocks the World Quest
, that requires you explore with
one more time and, in turn for 0
, gives you another key.
will also become a vendor after the main chain is completed, selling a toy:
for 0
and
for 0
.
Wyrmtongue Chests resemble
's chests in the Timeless Isle, that required you to buy
to open them. Inside the chests you have a small chance to find
! They also contain a multitude of items, including from 1 to 100.000 or more Nethershards inside, from what our users have gathered!

Two notes regarding the arsenals you can purchase:
While they are limited to Paladin and Death Knight classes for acquisition, once opened any class can use the look (presuming it's a weapon type they can use).
Also, the price for the DK arsenal is 2k nethershards, not 1k.

It appears that even the elite mobs have a chance to not drop any nethershards. Maybe they reduced the drop rates. Also, there are portal items that can call an invasion to a specific zone.

Two questions:
1. what ilvl does the Nethershard Essence make and
2. are you still limited to max two legendary items?

Anyone know exactly how long a "couple time" is?
Each quest rewards you with a better "ancient artifact with exorbitant value" which opens the next step after a couple time.

Do we know if the items sold by the previous Nethershard vendors will become available again?

It's missing the information on the new follower and achievement/quest to get it.

How exactly do the beacons work? I have used the uncommon ones multiple times and normally see a world announcenment that I have used them. Occasionally, the announcement is that I (or someone else) have either continued or improved the power of the beacon. But I can't figure out how to replicate that.
Oh, and trying to farm the 100 marks on a fresh 110 druid was NOT easily solo-able. Took me a few days scrapping out 4-6 marks per beacon over multiple deaths. Thankfully I tried again the other night and a number of players jumped in to help and start summoning their own portals.

I have two toons on Broken Shore.
One can see WQs with nethershard rewards.
The other toon sees the same WQs but no nethershard rewards.
Why?
