What determines the difficulty/level of this mission? First time I received it, it was level 19 and my highest level 21. Received again today after completing a campaign mission and now it's 25 while my highest level is 24. Is it adventure table campaign progression, my companions' levels or random? If it always scales with my levels, I'll never win.

Might as well make it 5,000 ash because it is impossible to win it anyway. Always set a couple of levels higher than then your highest! What is the bloody point Blizz?

Finished on Necrolords, from left to right top to bottom: Gorgelimb, Emeni, Talethi, ranged troop, Marileth. Levels were 26, 23, 9, 23, 26. Mission level was 26.

This mission is there only to lock your companions for 24hr, it might do it for XP at least? not sure, haven't checked what happens when you loose.

Mission : Breach the Planes
Level: Varies usually some levels above your highest level companion
Covenant: Night Fae

Suggested setup:

炽蓝仙野诱捕者 - 炽蓝仙野诱捕者 - 炽蓝仙野诱捕者
织梦者 - 炽蓝仙野诱捕者

If you don't have Dreamweaver yet or only low level, try 尼娅.

Notes:

Firstly, the general principle for this strategy is based on the success posted in another comment by @zgnzada so credit to them for this.
1. Damage mitigation

The main principle is damage reduction from the 炽蓝仙野诱捕者 ability Bramble Trap;

Winding tendrils ensnare all enemies, dealing $s1 Nature damage and reducing their damage by 20% every other round.

The important thing here is that this Bramble Trap ability stacks, therefore it reduces incoming damage from all opponent attacks (including special attacks it seems) every other round.

By using 4 x Ardenweald Trapper this gives a -80% reduction on incoming damage every other round which is a huge benefit to countering their powerful attacks and allowing them to survive and take out the opposing team. It also looks like this ability is bugged and is actually reducing damage for more rounds than it should, which is making it even more overpowered. Even fixed it still should make a big difference in these fights.

Combined with the inherent higher health of these front line troops this is the main advantage of this team. There is a team wide debuff specific to these fights which is an icon to the top left under the mission title. This one is Wave of Eternal Death. It sounds scary and initially my thought was to treat it like a DPS check and burn the team down before the stacks build. But their health and damage was too great and really, I did not see a big effect from this. Not sure it is shown in the combat log?

2. Buffed team damage

Dreamweaver is there primarily to give a big buff to damage for your team via her Social Butterfly ability;

Dreamweaver doubles the damage of all allies for 2 rounds.

This is a four round cooldown so for 50% of the time (varies a little as it gets cast the first round after most of the team have done their first attacks) your team is doing double the damage, which is important to take down the opponents who have high health. Although the trooper DoT is not much, with four of them the combination on all of the opposition does add up too, including backline opponents which is useful too.

She also has a heal ability, Podtender, which is a decent heal to an adjacent teammate. it does reduce their damage done by 10% but this is not so significant considering her big buff.

Team placement is pretty straight forward given you simple stack all slots with Ardenweald Trappers then it is just Dreamweaver. Personally I recommend to place her at the Rear row on the Left. This is because she will heal the left side Front row trapper and the way the mini-game plays, the opposition always tend to take the left side as a priority (depending on melee or ranged and position). So she will be healing trooper receiving the most incoming damage.

Level is always a factor and this mission seems always to be offered several levels higher than the highest companion. Also, you really need the troops to be within a few levels of the companions for sufficient health. It seems that troop health is set by the average of your companion levels, so getting them all up is important but having one quite a bit lower is not too bad if you have five+ companions.

Why this fight is frustrating initially is that the players natural inclination is to use the legendary quality companions in a team over the rare quality troops. But often the troops abilities can be better than these companions, especially until they are more highly levelled. And it looks like companion choice is more strategic for the type of opponent faced, rather than just going for the higher quality. You could add Guardian Kota to the team as he has the highest health and decent melee damage to the front left. However, you will lose 20% incoming damage reduction from a trooper in that slot which for this fight seems more useful; as an example.

Other combinations will surely work and a lot can come down to team level etc. If you don't have Dreamweaver yet, try Niya. But this seems to be the best strategy currently for this tough fight. Once used it is a high chance for success. That may change is the trooper ability is fixed though it probably will still succeed.
For other covenants look to mirror this strategy of damage mitigation plus any damage buff in the backline, with a focus on defence. Nothing will overcome too wide a level gap but it seems the best way for this fight.
Finally just to add to the other reports of success, I used this team for the Level 27 mission and none of the team died with all the team including Dreamweaver at level 24.

Good luck and it will be interesting how fights get worked out over time.

As of 16 Dec 2020 Patch Notes update they seem to have changed this somewhat, at least for my latest version of this. Level 1 Command Table still.

My Companions are 29-28 except for one who is Lvl20. My Troopers are Lvl28.

I have the mission at Level 20 which has a reward of 120 Soul Ash plus250 Stygia. Plus, the timer for the quest is 7 days with the usual 1 day time to complete it.

This is a lot easier and flexible on the timer in order to level your team if needed. The composition of the opposition appear the same just a lot lower level than mine.

EDIT: This was a Hotfix discussed with the developers last week and now in. Basically there are fixed stages you will get these Soul Ash quests like this first at level 20. Presumably then as you beat these higher ones become available. At least it avoids the problem of them continually popping up a way over current level.

In Sloot's interview, Ion Hazzikostas confirmed that dynamic level Soul Ash missions didn't feel great and the team was talking about changing them to static mission levels. This now appears to have been hotfixed on live servers, with players receiving a Static Level 20 Soul Ash Mission on their Mission Table!

And 16 Dec 2020 Hotfix note:

While progressing through the Adventures campaign, certain Maw Adventures now have fixed difficulty and availability.

Finally successfully completed the new level 20 version of this quest as Kyrian, though I had to basically out level to overpower it, and I can already see a better way to do it but here's what I did:

I can't quite remember, but I think Nemea, Teliash and the Halberbier all survived with about ~50% HP remaining. It could have gone on for quite a few more rounds.

I successfully completed Maw Breach The Planes as Venthyr as well. I found someones strat from youtube and it works fine. I tried this strat a few times before I saw the video at lowers levels without using Meatball and instead tried to run Ayeleth in his place the first few times. I also intially had Theotar in the bottom left and Kaletar in the bottom right. Changing companion placements and using two dps in the back this time seemed to work out perfectly since they didn't die as fast. It's unfortunate Venthyr had to wait so long because we don't really have any buff companions right now besides a healer. I also have another succesful win by using Ayeleth instead of Rahel which I can post as well.

All of my companions at the moment are at least level 30+ and the quest is a level 20 elite weekly LOL

If you can't do this mission before it expires for whatever reason (lousy troops, etc) worry not, it keeps coming back until you complete or enough of your followers reach level 40.

EDIT: Found an add-on called venture plan that greatly improves the interface (e.g. you can see how much XP each mission gives) and more importantly has a predictor that'll tells you if the party members you choose will succeed. On this mission I chose my 5 highest followers, click a button, it rearranges everyone for best outcome. I clicked another button and it told me how worn out my followers would be at the end and that I would be victorious. Sent them out on a successful mission,done. Wish I knew about this when I originally posted this, I send all my followers out in about a minute with no guess work.

Update: Venture Plan has not been updated for 9.1 as of this writing. The interface improvements still work OK but the predictor can be off for success, it's not always successful. The defeat guesses are spot on for now.

Breaching the plane mission for 150 soul ash completed at lvl60 level with Necrolords with the following setup:

Gunn (37) ---- Emeni (37) ---- Plague Deviser (37)

Gorelimb (36) ---- Talethi (34)

Gunn is the toughest, and that top left spot will need a meatshield, Emeni will boost the damage done of the all of the others, although that middle spot is under heavy fire but the dps boos worth the sacrifice.
Plague Deviser was quite safe on the front right spot and did good dps. Back line was reasonably safe.

Strategy:

Most incoming dmg on tanky Meatball
Second most incoming damage on Kleia. Kleia deals dmg back on each hit.
Reduce dmg taken on Meatball with Mikanikos

I could not get both to survive, Kleia and Meatball, no matter how much healing. I can't say that I understand why using Meatball in that position vs. Kleia is the better choice. Otherwise both die in the predictions. Even Sika buff didn't make it better.
