Edited for 6.1 Lunker catch changes
Apparantly, the Lunker catch chance got adjusted in 6.1. It seems to have a higher rate and Nat is no longer required to be assigned to the Fishing Shack if bait is used (as on the tooltip), something that I'd recommend to do anyway. Originally the main part of of this post stated that Angler was the required ability to catch Lunkers which was true. Now it isn't, and that actually makes this trait as good as useless. I've kept the remaining part of the post as it's still relevant.
Lunkers are one source of
rep. Both the Lucky Coins and the rep can be attained in different ways: rep can be attained more efficiently, coins is still subject of debate.
Reputation in Pandaria
I guess the rep is known to seasoned fishers: rare fish in Pandaria will continue to increase Nat Pagle rep in WoD, and they actually give
than Lunkers do and are caught
at a higher rate
, so if you are solely focusing on rep it is your best bet. That said, if you have him on Best Friend already you don't actually have to bother with increasing his rep at all as it carries over.
Different source of coins: Cavedwellers
second source is
(H) .They are summoned by fishing up and using
(H) at your Garrison Fishing Shack level 3. The catch rate on these fish is
higher and more localized
than Lunkers, as it requires only Garrison fishing: use the bait for the fish you want to farm and you'll still be getting price fish whilst farming Cavedwellers. In addition, Cavedwellers have other items on their loottable (
Nat's Lucky Coin throughput: Cavedwellers vs Lunkers
There is an ongoing debate which of the two is better just for coins. Though carp & minnow catchrates seem to be higher, the murlocs have
drop on coins. The droprate seems to be about 10% and they can drop one or two: the catchrate difference seems to be 5x more on carp & minnow at best, so with this rough calculation we note that
Lunkers come out on top purely for coins
. 6.1 change: after Lunker droprate increases this seems to be even more the case.
Based on the above, each of the three major fishing choices have their advantages:
Pandaria fishing: 1. reputation, 2. skilling.
Lunker fishing: 1. Nat's Lucky Coin, 2. reputation.
Garrison fishing: 1. Cavedweller additional loot, 2. Nat's Lucky Coin, 3. no movement required.
I will update this post accordingly if Blizzard decides to do something with the Angler trait.
2015/01/04: changed the post's buildup reflecting the slightly higher throughput of coins on Lunkers.
2015/09/23: changed the main part of the post to reflect the fact that Angler is no longer required to catch Lunkers and therefore very limited.
Are lunkers able to be caught in Garrison or only in Zones
This trait is “protected” when you reroll the traits on Nat Pagle (such as with
So, you can safely re-roll Nat Pagle’s traits —
will remain intact.
Nat Pagle's Angler is actually a fairly limited trait: only when Nat is working at your Fishing Shack you will be able to catch Lunkers.
This is wrong. You can catch Lunkers while Nat is on a mission as long as you have the zone's bait, which you should have anyway, so there is really no point in assigning him to work the fishing shack.
