Recommended Gear for Marksmanship Hunter in Shadowlands
What is the BiS Marksmanship Hunter gear?
With many different sources of gearing and loot scarcity in Shadowlands, targeting your absolute Best in Slot gear isn't entirely realistic; instead, we've created a Best in Slot list from the ideal Marksmanship Hunter raid drops found in Shadowlands, from Mythic Dungeons, to help you decide what to prioritize.
These lists should give you several gearing paths in Season 3 including
, Mythic+ (including
). Give the following guide a read to learn about all gearing options in Shadowlands Season 3.
Shadowlands Season 3 Gearing Guide
Sepulcher of the First Ones Best in Slot Gear for Marksmanship Hunter
Below is a compiled list of gear that comes strictly from Sepulcher of the First Ones. Outside pieces of gear (such as dungeon gear) is not factored in this list. Once we obtain our 4 set bonus, we'll primarily be using
paired with our respective covenant legendary. In general, you'll want to equip the highest item level pieces and rush any combination of tier set as quickly as possible to attain 4 piece. If you were lucky enough to obtain a Mythic version of
, it won't be replaced until you get a Heroic level weapon from Sepulcher of the First Ones. Ultimately, the list below is merely a suggestion and I highly suggest simming yourself with

Tier Set Bonus for Marksmanship Hunter
Shadowlands Season 3 marks the return of tier sets. This time around, tier sets are available not only for raiders, but also available from Mythic+ and PvP as well. Marksmanship bonus is Focused Trickery, present in the Godstalkers Vestments pieces and the bonuses are as follows:
Focused Trickery
2-Set
-
-
now also increases the damage of the affected shot by 30%.
4-Set
-
- Spending 40 Focus grants you 1 charge of
.
The set is composed of five pieces of gear:
(Helm -
(Shoulders -
Lords of Dread
)
(Chest -
)
(Gloves -
)
(Legs -
)
To unlock the tier set bonus, Marksmanship Hunters prefer equipping tier pieces on
Shoulder
,
Chest
,
Legs
and
Gloves
. Helmet slot will be used for the
legendary due to higher stat budget. However, you can use any 4 combination of the five pieces, aiming to achieve the highest overall item level.
The Marksmanship Hunter tier set bonus is a strong addition to the class toolkit, providing increased damage to both
and
, as well as a significant AoE boost. Despite relying on Trick Shots, after getting all 4 tier pieces
the Focused Trickery bonus works on single target.
Regardless of how many targets are present, spending 40 Focus gives us Trick Shots, boosting our next Aimed Shot or Rapid Fire. The set is pretty straightforward, but it'll change a few things about how we play Marksmanship.
First off, our basic rotation changes slightly after we obtain the 4 set. Since we now want to spend 40 Focus as often as possible to trigger the 2 piece damage bonus, we'll want to start weaving in Arcane Shots rather than casting Aimed Shots or Rapid Fires back to back.
Secondly, the tier set significantly increases the value of Careful Aim, Streamline and Volley. Careful Aim and Streamline are somewhat self explanitory, they just increase the damage of both affected shots, increasing their value. For Volley, the Trick Shots gained from it counts towards the 2 piece damage gained. Meaning without spending focus, we will immediately deal additional damage upon using Volley. This boosts its value in single target as well as increases our burst AoE potential.
Finally, the tier set introduces new synergy with
. Since we now gain Trick Shots every 40 focus, essentially every Aimed Shot we cast has a 50% chance to refund a charge and cost no focus. "Free" Aimed Shots still count as 40 focus since the baseline focus is accredited towards the 4 piece, not the actual focus spent. The legendary in combination with our tier set yields way more Aimed Shots, increased damage on both Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire as well as passive AoE to our toolkit.

Best Marksmanship Hunter Trinkets in Shadowlands
As DPS, we typically want the trinkets that deal the most damage, or boost our stats the most. Some trinkets will be better in single target and some may perform better with multiple targets. Below is a list of trinkets ranked in terms of performance. This may differ for you based on your own personal setup, which covenant you are, as well as what your intentions are in terms of content.
Due to gear being able to scale in a variety of content (Mythic+ and Raid), I'll typically list out the overall ranking of trinkets in order assuming equal iLvl. Significant item level differences will influence your selection.
Throughput Trinkets
The strength of trinkets will vary depending on the type of content you're doing as well as which covenant you've gone with. Below is a general list of trinket strengths for Marksmanship Hunters in particular. I've tried to add some notes next to each respective trinkets to give a bit more info.

Notes
S
-
Think of this trinket as a mini corruption system. You recieve up to 4 buffs, each buff you'll also recieve something negative done to you so be careful!
S
-
Gives an insane amount of on-use Versatility. Very long cooldown. Trinket gets better the shorter the fight is, or if you can use it a second time.
S
Amazing if you can get it to always proc stats, otherwise it loses value. Can also be used as a heal if needed.
A
Very good passive stat trinket now that it's obtainable in Mythic+.
A
Gives a solid amount of Haste. Strong in both single target and AoE.
A
PvP
Good on-use trinket that offers consistent damage. Only good if you can obtain it at high item level.
A
One of our best single target trinkets.
A
Very good in sustained single target, but loses value due to its RNG nature. Falls off hard in AoE.
A
A strong single target trinket now that we can obtain it in Mythic+. Falls off a bit in AoE.
B
-
Can give 1 of 4 different buffs to the user. Which buff is determined by an oscillating buff that remains on the player when trinket is available to use.
B
-
Gain a solid stat buff and give a small amount to surrounding players.
B
-
Deals damage once enough stacks have accumulated. Generally not amazing due to Marksmanship's low APM.
B
Decent in single target, but falls off in AoE.
C
PvP
Decent passive trinket.
C
Crafting
Not very good throughput.
C
An okay trinket that helps others, but there are much better options.
C
Crafting
Decent passive trinket, but there are much better options.
Best Items to Upgrade with Valor Points for Marksmanship Hunter in Shadowlands
Points is a currency used by players to upgrade items from Mythic+ Dungeons, either from running Mythic Keystones or from the Great Vault, up to item level 272. Similarly to
, Valor has a cap that is increased every week during the Season.
You can obtain Valor by completing Mythic+ dungeons or completing daily callings. You can learn more about Valor in our in-depth guide.
Earning and Spending Valor Points
When upgrading Mythic+ items to 272 with
, you'll prioritize items that give you the most value, which tends to be weapons and trinkets. I've noted the strongest selections for these gear slots below.
You'll then want to prioritize gear slots with higher stat budgets like helms, chests, and legs, especially if these gear slots are some of your lowest item level gear pieces. Next will be shoulders, gloves, belt, and boots. Finally, fill the remaining gear pieces by lowest item level slots. Please see the
Mythic+ Gear List
for suggestions on which specific pieces of gear to upgrade.

Weapon
Generally our strongest weapon from Mythic+.
Trinkets
A very strong that gives on-use Haste.
A very strong trinket that gives a large amount of stats if used correctly.
One of our strongest trinkets that gives passive stats to you and another partner.
Items to Prioritize in the Great Vault for Marksmanship Hunters in Shadowlands
When selecting your weekly reward from the Great Vault, you'll prefer higher item level pieces when possible. Prioritize weapons early, since they give the most throughput for a single item upgrade. High-priority trinkets will be your next best option, followed by items with a higher stat budget (typically Helms, Chests, and Legs followed by Shoulders, Gloves, Belt, and Boots).
Continue to favor high stat budget items over low stat ones. If there's a particular item in your gear set with a low item level then you can also select that over making minor item level upgrades to other pieces. As a bit of a cheat sheet:
Weapons → Tier Pieces (If needed) → High Value Trinkets → High Stat Budget Gear (Helms, Chests, and Legs) → Large Item Level Upgrades → Everything Else
For more information on how the Great Vaults works, please see the following guide:
Great Vault Guide
Best PvP Gear for Marksmanship Hunter in PvE
One of the most popular ways of gearing in Shadowlands is PvP. Unlike raiding and Mythic+, PvP provides players with a deterministic way of obtaining gear, making it more streamlined and less random than the other two high-end gearing options.
There are two main currencies for PvP gearing:
and
.
is used exclusively to purchase the base items at ilvl 220, while
is used to upgrade those base items to higher item levels based on your highest current rating in Rated PvP.
has a cap on how much you can obtain, similar to
, which increased every week during the Season, while
has no cap.
Learn more about PvP gearing in our in-depth guide, including ilvl brackets and item upgrade costs.
Conquest and PvP Gearing
The PvP on-use trinket
is something every Marksmanship should try to acquire, especially at a high item level. It's especially good for Kyrian hunters, but is a solid trinket all around.
Other than the trinket, there aren't any necessities from PvP outside of some gear with high Versatility on it. It's not really necessary to get the pieces below, but if you're able to obtain them at a higher item level, they may sim better than standard pieces from raid.

Thanks for the Guide. Was very curious about the Armor section. I was wondering about what you thought about Vigilance Perch as an option for legendary in place of Zevrims Hunger? it is a +80 Agility and an increase in speed after each kill up to the Spirit Owl. I am not an expert on these matters just asking a question. It should at least get a mention in your legendary selection criteria section.

Ok another question regarding BiS section and legendaries. Ok, its a real pain in the nether regions that you can only choose two but I was curious if you could expand more on The Shadow Hunter's Voodoo Mask. I just pulled this from a Wardens Chest today and the healing on fain death is a pretty cool effect if you ask me. Plus it has loads of agility. So I am just curious why choose the other two legendaries over this. Is there another way to heal quickly and not disrupt your fain death. I am still a relative newcomer to 110 level but this seems like a very useful talent. Also for macro designers would there be a way to equip this mask and then fain death I know that would slow things down a bit because you would have to unequip one of your other legendaries and then throw on the mask and then cast fain death.

I'm curious, for BiS Shadowlands dungeon gear, would Rattling Deadeye Hood be better than Soulthorn Visage for stat priority? Or does the haste benefit us?

A good guide. I would have liked an easier to find link to what that legendary is called so I can find where it drops. The current link only goes to the crafted item, the ring, not the legendary.

I looked at the section for dominated socketed gear and noticed unholy for the shoulders and chest. If you equip those on that gear, you will not get the benefit of the socket bonuses.

Are there any stat changes based on whether you decide to run M+ content or raiding? I'd like to use the mythic+ bis list to kind of work on my "pre raid bis" slots.
