The quest line to enter Karazhan starts here:
Karazhan (lvl 68 requirement)
Karazhan is one of the high end dungeons in The Burning Crusade & can be found in Deadwind Pass (in Azeroth).
Part 1 :
- Arcane Disturbances:
Use the Violet Scrying Crystal near underground sources of water in the Master's Cellar and return to Archmage Alturus outside of Dalaran.
=> The pond and the well are found inside The Master's Cellar. There are two entrances to the cellar, both are found right next to eachother at (48, 78). One of them leads to the pond, and the other leads to the well.
- Restless Activity:
Bring 10 Ghostly Essences to Archmage Alturus outside of Karazhan.
=> The essences are found off of ghosts inside The Master's Cellar. There are two entrances to the cellar, both are found right next to eachother at (48, 78).
Part 2 :
- Contact from Dalaran: (
This report details my findings. Take it to Archmage Cedric, also from the Violet Eye; you will find him in the outskirts of Dalaran.
=> He can be found just north from Dalaran (15,54).
- Khadgar: (
Deliver Alturus's Report to Khadgar in Shattrath City in Terokkar Forest.
=> He can be found in the center of Shattrath City (54, 44).
Part 3 :
- Entry Into Karazhan: (
Khadgar wants you to enter the Shadow Labyrinth at Auchindoun and retrieve the First Key Fragment from an Arcane Container hidden there.
=> Can be found in 'The Screaming Hall' on the left of Murmur in an Arcane Container.
- The Second and Third Fragments (
Obtain the Second Key Fragment from an Arcane Container inside Coilfang Reservoir and the Third Key Fragment from an Arcane Container inside Tempest Keep. Return to Khadgar in Shattrath City after you've completed this task.
=> The second key fragment is in the steamvaults, in the water next to the first boss, just dive in and its on the bottom.
=> The third key fragment drops in Arcatraz, it can be found in the corner of the room after the first boss)
Part 4 :
Complete CoT: Black Morras
(You have to finish CoT: Old Hillsbrad Foothills to attune yourself for Black Morras)
Before you can kill Nightbane you must do the Medvih's Journal quest line
. The quickest way to do this is by killing Moroes>Opera>Curator>Shade and skipping the other bosses. Once you have the book from the Shade you then have to kill the first boss in Shattered Halls(heroic) and the first boss in Sethekk Halls(heroic)
. Then you can summon Nightbane on the Masters Terrace which is very close when you zone in through the side entrance. On a side note you must kill Moroes to start the Opera and you must complete the Opera to open the side door, also killing the Shade will allow you to teleport to the Shades room via an NPC outside the entrance.
anyone got a link to a map of kara like atlas type floorplan....
I cant find any info on here about the Chess event. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Is any other guilds out there really using DKP in Kara? I've noticed most just open roll it. Being that only 2 people normally roll at one time. And, it is really today's UBRS, as said earlier.
Where is the Big Bad Wolf ? ; and why i cant spawn him or some others boss`s?
One of the best if not THE best site for wow strategies and explanations:
Another useful site if you're looking into strats besides wowwiki. It contains visual layouts as well as explained strats, pretty cool:
click on the Boss Strategies tab if you're looking for what I'm talking about.
Somebody create a link showing all the bosses in order so i can see which is which.
I saw someone ask for the order to take the bosses so here it is:
1. Attumen the Huntsman
3. Maiden of Virtue
4. Opera Event
5. The Curator
6. Terestian Illhoof
7. Shade of Aran
8. Chess Event
9. Prince Malchezaar
I was in Kara last night and noticed something about the opera event. While our group leader was explaining the strategy for each of the possible boss situations, I was reading the chat log, and noticed the NPC stagehands were giving clues about which boss we were about to fight. For example one said something about "It looks like it's time to update the sets for the Oz scene" and another mentioned something about the big bad witch. So, if you're standing outside of the stage door, wait a bit, and you might get a clue as to what you're about to fight.
A relitivly easy instance if your experienced.
The difficulty of the The Big Bad Wolf opera encounter has been seriously increased in the last week or so. He now stuns, walks through scenery, cuts corners etc. We've downed him many times without difficulty, but needed four attempts this week. Victory seemed lucky in the end.
Whats the Sergeant's Quarters? There is a locked door going to it from the Livery Stables which is above Auttamen's room. (When you get close to the door it says your in The Guardhouse) Just wondering what it is and how you get the key. Been very curious about this for a long long time.
A minor noob question...
Does all in the raid need to have the key or is it like key in fx. SL? Meaning that the others can open the door for you?
about how long would it take an "average" raiding guild to do a full Kara clear?
Is Kara harder then heroics
I have finally managed to count the reputation gain and I can say that full Karazhan run with all bosses killed yields approx. 6.5k reputation with The Violet Eye.
(We have skipped a bit of thresh though, if you're aimed to max. rep gain it should be around 6.7-6.8k)
Patch 2.3 made it so all bosses in Kara drop .
Karazhan is easily farmed in 3 hours once a week by a T5 guild for 22 badges. The badges are generally used to obtain the PvP cloak or the new ZA-level gear by these guilds.
Thought it was funny none ever showed a "req" so, heres a little guide to armor:
All healers are suggested to have 40-41 healing talents and need 1k heals except for paladin who need ~900 bonus heals. Paladins are also suggested to have good spell crit (~20%).
~490 defense (Uncrit)
~15% in each Parry, and Dodge
~10.5-12k Hit points (raid buffed)
~10k hp unbuffed
Need to be fury unless they have the gear to support arms.
415 Defense (Uncrit)
12-13k hp buffed
~600dmg 25%crit 5%spell hit
~800dmg 10%crit 3%spell hit
~700dmg 10%crit 3%spell hit
All need 7k Health
~1300 attack power unbuffed
ca. 5 % hit
1100 Attack power
Does anyone know when the NPC will have the LW patterns for sale? I'm just about exalted with the Violet Eye and still have not seen the patterns. I check every week when my group goes in. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks.
How is it possible for anyone below 70 to enter Karazhan?
I've seen level 69's entering, how is that possible?
I am eager to start tanking Karahzan 1. floor, but I am wondering if I have good enough gear.
In dire bear form I have: Ca 13k HP, ca 23k armor and ca 25% dodge. Ofc I got the 415 defense rating druids need too. Is this enough to be able to tank in the first floor?
Has anyone cleared kara with only two healers? Our group made it through prince with three healers (druid, priest, paladin), but I barely needed to heal anyone for the entire fight. I had basically full mana (no Shadow Priest), and didnt have to pot.
Doing a full-clear of Karazhan will not only grant you epics, but 22 Badge of Justice as well.
The item 6 in the Attunement list is a bit incorrect.
Kadghar sends you to Medivh to reforge his key, but instead, after you complete the Black Morass event, Medivh will tell you that the key was meant to be given to Kadghar and Kadghar alone, and then he gives you his very own key, hence the name "The Master's Key".
When you return to Kadghar in Shat'trah he will be amazed by your story and will send you back to Karazhan, where you will pick up the first raid quest from there.
For patch 2.4. you do not need to do any quest to be able to enter Karazhan.
To open the door, however, you will still need the key, so it is enough, if just one member of the raid did the quest chain for the key.
For all your twinking and/or sightseeing wishes, please note that you must be at least level 68 to enter this instance.
How much rep is 1 full karazhan run? exlcuding the beast room/boss.
In the room before Aran there a piles of books burning, which could be a possible reference to Ray Bradbury's classic novel,
Certain races do not need the key to enter Karazhan. There is an easter egg that allows you to get undereath Karazhan, and besides a /very/ strange.. well let's say decoration down there, you will also find that you can actually go through the instance portal "from behind".
For any info on how to get there, just youtube "Under Kara" and it'll pop up.
Undeads and Tauren can't get there, that much i know. Belf females can. So basically you need to be skinny to drop through the crack.
With the 2.4 patch u don't need to do the Attunement any more .. u just need a guy in ur group with the key...
I commited myself to a farming guild run, took us about 5 hours to clear everything, and yes it was hard, but most of us were in ZA gear so it wasn't too hard.
Incorrect. I attempted to summon inside Arc and it told me I was unable to use the spell. Arc is still in Netherstorm, and ALL of Netherstorm is void of summons with the exception of the summoning stone.
Might want to double-check that since the patch before speaking, my Arcatraz group three nights ago was able to warlock summon our 70 warrior with no flying mount onto the terrace right in front of the instance portal.
I just think it's funny that 68+ is required to enter Karazhan, but only 65 is required to enter Mount Hyjal.
How do you get the opera area to open ive ben trying but it doesnt work
Karazhan Warrior tanking set:
--> 41 badges
can someone show the karazhan rogue set, so i know if i can move onto ZA
I'm sure you could do karazhan with two healers even if they are mostly in blues. For instance I'm currently only in tier 6 as a paladin. Yet I am easily able to heal karazhan solo.
I just started to play WOW with a few friends and we reach lvl 70. We are a noob guild with only 17 ppl in it and crappy gear(in a item based game), but we have great ambition and we wanna run Karazan. I saw the requierments that ppl posted but i wanted to know wich is the best setup to run Kara. How many healers(how many priests and how many pala), how many tanks, droods, shamans, mages, locks, rogues ....
basicaly i wanna see something like :
2 warriors tank
or something like this :D
As a mage, I found out that it is possible to infact blink through the gate straight into the instance. Therefor, there is no need for anyone in the raid group to have the key, if you have a mage that is. Although, it's most likely that someone in your raid will have the key anyway. Just a little handy hint though =)
To get in, you need to stand right up at the game, (hug it) and simply blink, you get be sent straight to the kara loading screen. and poof, you're in!
Im a 68 hunter on gorefiend... pretty full server, and i want 70, but, I dont like questing.. i have 8k HP..tons of AP, and do you think with a lock summon i could get in? thanks!
Btw, 1 more question, as someone said before up there, do i have to do the long chain to be keyed? or can i get a lock summon and / or have a rogue pick the lock? TY
Well im 70 and in epics now, and already ran it and wasnt keyed, TY though!
Karazhan is a very large and interesting instance. I recommend while after chess to take a stroll to the left and check out Medivh's quarters. Most people have only ever seen the places where you actually go to kill the bosses.
You are free to explore a few hours after the instance is cleared, as all mobs will despawn. This is also a good time to turn in quests to talk to NPC's around the instance as most groups nowadays don't want to clear the way to them.
How many badges drops on a full run?
Mages dont really need a key to get into Karazhan ( i just discovered) i was running into gate and i hit blink and i was inside instance.
Why does wowhead say: requires lvl 68 if you have to be 70 to enter? I don't get it. Pls someone explain... Sorry, i'm beginner.
How many T4 helm tokens does Prince drop now? Is it still just one or is it more?
I think that Karazhan is one of the most interesting dungeons in WoW. The way to get the key is not easy. but I think that entering this cool dungeon is good reward.
I seem to have found a small glitch. It's pretty irrelevant, but when you look at the Karazhan page for the raid itself, the Opera House event is before the Maiden. When you look at one of the boss encounters' pages, it places the Maiden before the Opera House. Nothing serious, I just noticed.
Anyone notice that the there is only 1 mail +spell damage piece here aside from the T4 tokens?
anyone know if i can do kara with pvp gear?. merci´gear and vengeful gloves. full epic and skilled 1912 ap with my buffs. 1604 ap unbuffed
Karazhan Druid Tanking Loot Guide
If you are a druid tank, it should be noted that there is not a whole lot of leather tanking gear in any of the lvl 70 raid instances. Your best bet is to get PVP/Arena gear. Druids are lucky in that PVP gear is quite viable for raid tanking, since reaching crit immunity through resilience is cheaper in the general stats budget than is Defense (which doesn't give us parry or block, only dodge). Now that Season 4 is out, it's not hard to get S2 and S3 pieces that are as good or better than Kara-level items anyway. There are a few good Leatherworking items to be had too, if that is an option for you. Karazhan ends up being a great place to farm lots of badges, with which you buy one of the numerous great tanking leather pieces. However, there are a number of worthy tanking items in Kara, even if there is little leather:
Zierhut's Lost Treads
-- rather mediocre for tanking -- basically DPS boots with some extra armor
-- great until you can buy better with badges or your Violet Eye tanking ring is upgraded
Gilded Thorium Cloak
Barbed Choker of Discipline
-- awesome necklace that you'll keep for a long time
Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch
-- very nice for that "oh crap, I'm about to die" moment
Gauntlets of Malorne
Stag-Helm of Malorne
There is an ample number of DPS/kitty gear in Kara. The two T4 pieces listed above are excellent for cat DPS because of the set bonus: more energy means more combo moves! A lot of ferals will gem/enchant these two pieces in some way as to make them viable for both Tanking and DPS. One issue to consider when tanking Karazhan is those raid groups who give loot priority to "on spec" players (the item matches your talent tree spec) over "off-spec" players -- many people think that if you're tanking, DPS gear is off-spec for you, so they give priority to rogues. If they pull that, tell them that the beauty of a druid tank is your ability to switch gear and go DPS for mobs/bosses that don't need two tanks (Maiden, Big Bad Wolf, Shade of Aran, Prince, Nightbane).
Well i did do kara i killed 3 bosses midnight, moroes and maiden and everyone dropped mage stuff that was really annoying :P
is there any music scrpt to Karazhan? so i can make an macro and play the music everywhere =))
I'm new to this. I've heard that Kara takes 8 hours to complete. How does this work? As a 15 year old kid who is only able to play an hour at a time is there any way I am able to run through Kara, I'v heard its the benchmark for gear before you can do some decent PvP. Is there some sort of checlpoint system?
This place is getting nerfed so bad. On ptr i ran it in 70min :O
As of 3.0.2, this raid has been nerfed like crazy. All of the bosses have their health at least halved, making the instance at least 5 mannable now. It can be done with a good group in about an hour and a half.
Karazhan has become a total wussy pussy raid, even more than it used to be.. I just killed Maiden in less than a minute with a PuG, and we ninja pulled curator but still killed him in 1 minute. Altho i guess one thing still isn't clear to some people, and that's flame Wreath, I just capsed it in the middle of the screen (Raid Warning) and 1 ^&*got just can't help running around like.. like.. I don't even know something that is that stupid..

Hehe. I find this really strange too, that we say like 10 times to new guys getting run through kara, and a raid warning spam(macroed) + deadly boss mods text, DO NOT MOVE DURING FLAME WREATH, guess what, it comes and half the raid dies
But a nice badgefarm place untill they are useless again, lets you reach that gear you want before wrath comes.
(the better gear you have, the faster you level up)
As of 3.0.2 this has ben exceptionally nerfed! it can be done in 90-120 mins, and I greatly recommend for "badly" geared seventies to take a few runs here before lich king pops.
For like a new group? How far in would 2 hours get you? Full Clear? How long?
Two manned all of it besides Netherspite and Illhoof today. Ret pally healing (~1600 sp) and a nax 10 man geared feral druid tanking.
Is karazhan Soloable as a good lvl 80 player?
So far we did a part of this tonight with 4 guildmembers.
1 Protection Paladin level 80
1 Arcane Mage level 74
1 Restoration Shaman level 74
1 Beastmaster/Marksmanship Hunter level 77
None of us was 'specially' geared apart from Northrend gear and some had a couple of PvP items.
For some it was the first time enter Karazhan.
We downed Midnight and Attumen without any troubles. Paladin just tanked both.
Moroes was a bit harder.
Paladin tanked Moroes and his 4 adds. We killed the adds asap. Went down pretty fast.
Moroes' Garotte was pretty annoying. I healed right through it so mana was a bit worrying at times.
We didn't know if we could cleanse it, or we didn't care just wanted to down him. Anyway, totally possible without cleansing it.
Went on to Maiden of Virtue. She was pretty hard due to her holy fire that hits for about 2k a tick.
Dropping Grounding Totems helped to avoid it.
Keeping the tank up all the times wasn't that hard. Never got close to dying even when she casted sleeping spells on the healer.
Athe Opera Event we had to kill Romulo and Julianne.
We wiped at this one. We didn't had enough interupt spells to make her stop healing herself. We tried it two times, the first time we kept on fighting for about 10 minutes till we died. The second time it seemed harder. Julianne used holy light that also ticks for about 2k. Pretty annoying. If we had just one more dps with interupt it would be totally duable.

Anyone know if they lowered the level required to get inside in LK?
I was told that you can enter here as a lvl 65? Is this true? Mag's and Gruuls is 65 min to enter. This would be killer for XP for an Alt...
For Exploiters !
Home to Karazhan Smiley Face , and Morgans Plot.
Karazhan Smiley can be access'd by climbing a mountan , using rocket boots onto the main tower , then getting a mage to CC you.
even easier , just run to the back of the Kharazhan tower , and find a little triangled-shape hole on the floor , walk into that , and u will fall through the floor to the kara Smiley!
Morgans Plot !
1. Head to kara graveyard.
2. walk south into the Crypt.
3. Get a mage to CC you through the iron bars.
4. Enjoy a huge hidden wonder.
Not really a feat, and not looking for bragging rights... but if anyone is interested in running KZ at higher levels, a group of 5 lvl 75 with green/blue gear had no problem cleaning most of the place.
Level 76 paladin tank knew some of the fights and tricks necessary to beat encoutners, the rest (heal-priest 75, warrior dps 74 warlock 74 and hunter 75) had never set foot in the instance.
We skipped Netherspite as we figured it would be too tricky without at least 2 people per position.
Mana was an issue for the healer several time and DPSers died often towards the end of some of the bosses just so the mana could go to the tank.
Half the items we had were dezed, but quite a few were upgrades. A good, balanced group of 73-74 would probably have a good time and see a lot of minor upgrades. 75/76 was a level or two too late loot-wise.
Unreleased Instance at Karazhan Tower ( Near the top )
Heres a Screenshot of the portal:
(Ignore the Note)
Note: I've realised you DONT need to see through the building , it can be seen just by using any Far sight ability near the top of the tower
if you wish to downrate this , please try it before you do.
This is on a Live Server ~ Dunemaul 8:11 pm.
Edit Fori: soz im Horde :P "Kalcros"
Can this instance be 2 manned?
Random fact: there is a glitched wall spot outside of Karazhan. If you run into it, you will fall under Kara and there will be a smiley face.
Kind of creepy to discover this at 3 AM
Edit for screenshot
Some races can't fit through the hole...and...this reminds me of the Crypt. Now, this bug has been fixed, but you used to be able to be able to get feared in. (Or poly'd but haven't tried, and bug is broken :() but it has an ante room, and splits off. There is a deep watery pit, an underwater section with a bunch of floating bodies hanging by their toes. A couple portcullis's and odds and ends. No enemies in there. My GM called a guild meeting in there lol. We were in the Magical Playpen of Doom, as he called one pit. No longer works, but was reaaaaaaaaaaaally cool.
Is it me or does this remind anybody else of The Shining?
If you use the glitch to get under Karazhan there's a smiley face.... Makes me wonder how the hell it goes from naturally happy to tower of the undead O.o
easy to duo at lvl 80 - feral druid / demo-lock in mix of naxx 10/25 gear.
only problems were chess event - done after about 5 attempts and Prince Malchezaar - you just need to get lucky with the infernals
anyone know what the max level on the summon stone is? I was wondering if you can stone all the way up to an 80 or if you can only stone a 70something.
Ran this a few nights ago, the summon stone can summon 80 had 5 in our group and myself lvl 72 and a 75 summoned everyone. Did full boss run in about 3 hours not bad, this was my first run through here since it has been nerfed, last run was back in 2.4 so yea its been a while. But over all good run had two healers and 1 tank and rest DPS, took us three times to clear past chess game, and something we ran into after you complete the chess game we went on and we not able to attack the mobs in next room behind the door, almost had full wipe until I ran up and reset the game then we could attack, just something to think about if that comes up for you.
What Defense do you need to be uncrittable here?
I'm planning on going into it at 70 for totally replacable gear.
it is confirmable, i opened the lock with a Cobalt Skeleton Key, so you dont need to do the quests to get the key, unless of course you really want it.
I've just soloed Karazhan as a protection paladin (lv200-226 gear). I've completed all bosses except Netherspite, who doesn't seem to be able to be taken down by a single person only.
I was lucky enough to meet wizard of Oz encounter at Opera, in my opinion that's the easiest opera fight for a tank to solo. Just go for Dorothy first, the others will be taken down by the aoe soon enough :)
Chess took many tries to learn which pieces I had to move in order to win. But it's doable solo, if you're patient.
Only boss that posed a real difficulty, and had me use all my cd's, ardent defender, and so on, was Shade of Aran. Especially at the phase where he summons the 4 water elementals. I had frost resist aura on for that encounter.
All the other bosses, Prince and Nightbane included, were just a matter of patience from my side, until I dps'ed them down. No real threats.
Karazhan soloed, wow... I'd never expected that this thing could be done a few months ago!
All you who are interested in soloing, try it! It's doable! Happy hunting :)
Agathoklis, Protection Paladin, Scarshield Legion EU
EDIT: I soloed Netherspite too... the trick, as others have posted, is to pull him outside of his room. And fight him with your back against the wall, because he throws you back at times.
Another 80 prot paladin here saying this can be soloed.
Very easy fights are The huntsman, Maiden, Moroes, and Illhoof. For some reason Illhoof never used chains on me. I never remembered if he use that on tanks or not.
Hard fights were Curator (make sure to kill adds), Aran (I went holy for this fight as you don't really tank him much anyway and i got killed fast as prot, one issue is dps he has a enrage timer), and Opera. Opera would have been easy with romeo and juliet or Oz, but i got The big bad wolf. I spend 80% of the fight running around the edges as little red riding hood. Another 10% of the time i was either stunned or feared. That gave me the last 10% to do as much dps and healing as i could do. He hit me for about 3k damage in red riding hood form, as well as the transformation silencing me for the duration. Bubble can be used to prevent transformation. I pulled out all the stops to stay alive, bubble, lay on hands, and had ardent defender proc 3 times during the fight.
will update for other bosses as i down them this week.
Just managed to solo the whole place, all bosses, as a paladin. My gear consists of epics ilvl 219-226, with a few 200 and a few 245.
The trick to making it easy is to NOT spec full protection. Full protection is an awful spec for soloing, because it's completely unsustainable. Once your health drops down, you only have a few one-trick ponies such as LoH, Argent Defender, a healing potion, and the almost-not-worth it Divine Shield and blowing your entire mana bar on healing yourself for 10k. After those are blown, you're slowly dying with no way to heal yourself.
is much, much better. It goes down in ret in order to pick up AoW, JotW and Sheath of Light, which together give you the precious insta-cast FoL's that heal for a decent amount. Furthermore, I pick up Crusader Strike and all the +crit talents, as it's vital to be able to get those AoW procs.
Gear is basically as ret - full str, crit, etc. Don't equip tank gear as you'll lose much needed crit rating. The beauty of this build is that you can swap out the following, depending on how defensive or offensive you need to be:
Weapon: Sword (as low delay as possible, for more crits) +Shield for defense, 2H for offense.
Blessing: BoSanct for defense, BoM for offense.
Seal: Seal of Light for defense, SoV for offense.
For the majority of fights, go "defensive mode" to make it a breeze. Remember to buff talented Righteous Fury, and on tough fights, it's simply a matter of discipline - every time your health dips below 90%, use an insta-cast FoL.
The toughest guy in there was definitely the Opera event, with the Wizard of Oz. That event is pretty much impossible as 51 ret with 2H, so it forced me to research a new spec. With this build though, I was in complete control and didn't even use LoH. Second toughest was Prince, but even he wasn't very tough. Chess is annoying since it's a matter of being lucky.
A little rundown of the bosses:
* Attumen: Easy, tank and spank.
the shadow priest (
Baroness Dorothea Millstipe
) if she's up - and keep her feared, otherwise her mana burn will take a huge chunk of your mana. If she's not up, fear the annoying paladin (
Lady Keira Berrybuck
) or whoever is giving you the most trouble. Watch where she goes, and every time she returns to you, throw a new fear on her. Otherwise, just go to town on the adds and kill Moroes himself afterwards.
* Maiden: Easy, walk up and kill her. Did her as retribution.
* Opera Event: As mentioned, a tough one.
- Wiz of Oz: Use Frost Aura, and kill Dorothee first. Open up on Dorothee with SoV and AW to burn her while the other mobs are still inactive. After about 15-20 seconds, switch to SoL. Kill her, then Roar, then the rest are easy. Crone is easy. An overall tough fight until Dorothee is down.
- The Big Bad Wolf: I used my hybrid spec for him, but I think full ret might be a bit faster. Every time he LRRH's you, ruuuuuun like a headless chicken around the stage. When it runs out, dps him and top yourself off, along with a fresh Sacred Shield. Also a tough fight.
- Romulo and Julianne - probably impossible to solo :(. This forces you to wait for a reset and try again. Bummer.
* Curator: Also very easy, kill sparks as they appear. When he evocates (+200% damage taken); switch to 2H and burn him down while he has the debuff to speed things up a bit.
* Chess Event: I got lucky and somehow the other team's king got down to 50% somehow, without be controlling any pieces to damage him. I took control of my king and burned him donw. Took 4 tries one time, 1 try another time. A good tip is to move the conjurer forward a bit so you can nuke the other team's king with him, then when their king is down to around 50%, move ahead with your king and bash him down.
* Illhoof: The "Legacy of the Mountain King" book from the tomes is extremely good here, as it has a chance to proc +100 to all resists, and stacks twice. Ignore all the imps, put on fire resistance aura and coupled with the resist proc from the book, you'll take virtually no damage.
* Shade of Aran: Full retribution spec for this guy. Super easy, just burn him down. You can put on a resistance aura, either frost or fire helps a little. When the water elementals pop, use Divine Shield so they come to you, then kill them.
* Netherspite: Pull him out of his room (you can just make it with a 30-yard range spell) before the door closes, and he'll come for you. Fight him in the room just outside and burn him down. He still empowers (+200% damage), which makes him hit pretty hard, but doesn't get the beams when he isn't in his room, so you just have the Netherbreath (often resisted) and void zones to worry about.
* Nightbane: Easy, just takes a long time. Beware that you don't pull him too far down the balcony, he bugged out on me once and just flew away.
* Prince. A bit tough. He hits pretty hard in phase 2 and 3, but as long as you constantly keep your health up, and move out of the hellfire from demons (or get lucky and dont' have to move much), its not bad.
Good luck to other soloers! :)
For those hunters out there that love to solo, or just any one wanting to watch videos here is a link to my web page soloing all of Karazhan but illhoof/netherspite. (illhoof i believe will be possible ill put in some attempts at it later!)
Solo'd all of Karazhan (except for netherspite/nightbane) fairly easily as a Blood DK.
Was using tank gear + frost presence for all of it except for Attumen. Much of it could be done in dps gear, but I just wanted to be safe. My dps gear is ICC10 quality, tank gear is t9/toc10. All of this was done in my dps blood spec.
Attumen, simple just death strike as always for heals...kill midnight first. I did this in dps gear using frost presence.
Moroes, kill healers first, defensive cooldowns at start...was very easy
Maiden, nothing to it.
For Opera I got the Oz event, was quite easy. I was unsure how the fight worked, had been so long since I did it. So I didn't have a kill order. I'd suggest killing Dorothy first then pick for yourself. Once The Crone spawns, simply avoid tornadoes. Use any pots or defensive cooldowns you have near the start. Lots of incoming damage in the beginning.
The only fight that gave me some trouble was Curator. He is immune to all your diseases meaning you can not death strike for heals. So you'll need to put diseases on the sparks that spawn and death strike them to survive. Go all out on him when he evocates, and use any defensive cooldowns + AoTD on his enrage at the end.
Chess for me was just sort of luck. Failed 3x before i won. I'd move a couple grunts out front to give the King room to move for when Medivh cheats and puts fire under your feet. When I won the Ally king came my way and didn't even attack me too much, was able to burn him down with 2k hp left.
Illhoof was easy. Use Pestilence to kill imps with your disease. If your dps isn't good enough switch and kill some, don't let them stack up too much. Kill the little named imp whenever he is up.
Shade was also very easy. Interrupt whenever you can, don't go into blizzard, run out when he arcane explodes. Kill water elementals when they spawn, they die fast.
Prince was very easy, keep your hp high....watch out for infernals. I didn't take too much damage with my gear so it was pretty simple.
Not bad money for running it all. Roughly 40g per boss + the epics and trash greens.
To the level 80 players out there: Three players are more than adequate to clear the entire zone. We brought a frost spec DK for a tank, a holy priest for healing and an assassination rogue for DPS. We encountered very few difficulties. Of note for a three man attempt:
Terestian Illhoof will sacrifice one player, and if it is your healer it could mean problems. This can be remedied by the healer keeping HoTs on themself. If a priest, I suggest keeping prayer of mending out in the party so it jumps back during the sacrifice.
Netherspite only requires some coordination. Simply assign two colors to each person and have them switch. A rogue was able to tank easily in the red beam.
Otherwise, all of the other bosses were defeated by a simple tank and spank and if there was some sort of add that threatened the healer, then the DPS took care of it easily.
Hope this helps.
can u run it with a group of three with a 80 77 and a 70
can this be soloed as a warlock?
early march 2010, took a 78 prot pally (~22k health buffed, 5.3% crit reduction, just short of the cap) in to see what could be solo'd. The last time I was in kara was pre-3.0.2, so I had these memories (erroneous?) of 80k health spectral horses 2-shotting me in mail gear. I also had tanked the entire raid a few times on a diff. pally. One of the first things I noticed was the spectral ponies are now in the 30k hp range, and they hit like BC lvl 70 non-heroic instance mobs.
Inside the instance alone (the other raid member not online), I still got xp from mobs within my xp range (70+).
Even accounting for my lvl diff., it seems kara trash has been nerfed to below bc heroic 5-man levels. I cleared attumen, moroes, and maiden, all one-shots. Attumen was hard due to the 50% hit reduction debuff, at times divine plea (only 1 point in the talent) didn't refresh. Maiden wasn't hard at all, and moroes' garrote, the bane of bc raids early on, I just JoL/SoL'd through. I used SoL for attumen and maiden all the way through, don't recall if I used SoC while moroes had adds up.
Trash was so soft-hitting that I ended up chain pulling 5-6 horses/handlers at a time, ditto the rest of the cleared trash areas EXCEPT the demons in the hallway leading to maiden, which killed me when I took 4 on.
I was unable to down the servant quarters spider boss, and got BBW for opera, which was a no-go.
Re the kara trash, I did arca heroic later and had vastly more trouble there than I did at any point in the kara run, so based on this (and that bc heroic mobs didn't have their damage reduced en masse like raids did), it seems kara has been nerfed into the ground.
This is the best raid ever! It has some odd significance, nostalgia, and great loot too!
After running it with some friends (the number fluctuated but at most we had 4 80s, one being a tank and one being a healer), I found this to be quite an amazing raid.
The atmosphere itself is unique. It's the only true "haunted house" in Warcraft. Combine the magnitude of the scenery with the characters involved (Moroes FTW) with the events that occur (the opera, the dinner, chess) and also with the music that plays in the background and you have yourself one helluva raid. While it is easy to get lost in this place, even getting lost is worth it since you get to see things you would never find in another instance. Not to mention, the entire instance is floating between two dimensions - the real world, where it exists in Deadwind, and some form of the Twisting Nether, where the tower itself is shattered to pieces.
The boss fights, due to the fact that it is a level 70 10m and has been greatly nerfed, are cake. The only events that gave us remote trouble were Netherspite (the portal phase can get a tad bit confusing but chances are you'll have the boss dead before it gets out of hand) and the Chess Event (mainly due to the fact that it was created for 10 players). Still, I eventually managed to two-man the Chess Event through a mixture of luck and frantic piece changing, and all that was left was the Prince, who isn't much trouble at all if you tank him in the doorway, where infernals don't spawn.
Overall, an outstanding piece of work by Blizzard. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of the raid is hard to recreate without exactly copying aspects of it (primarily, the whole idea of a "haunted house" being a raid was genious), but if you haven't run it before then grab a few 80 friends and go for it. I wouldn't pug it or anything because the last thing you want is to be stuck with people who care so much about the achievement that they don't enjoy the raid and ragequit if you get lost or lose the chess event.
Possibly the nerdiest post I've ever created, but I feel justified in doing so.
Hmm, why is there a smiley on the ground below the main entrance? O_O
I just love this dungeon my all time favorite dungeon
Does anyone who still inhabits this comment section think Karazhan was inspired by Stephen King's Overlook Hotel from "The Shining"?
As of patch 4.0.1, a friend and I ran Karazhan for fun, the Chess Event awarded 10 Justice Points. We downed everything except for Nightbane (no summon) and nothing else awarded any JP's.
As of patch 4.0.1 soloed the instance (except Netherspite, and Nightbane, coz I've lost the urn of the latter) as a demo warlock in mostly 264 lvl gear. I would have killed Netherspite if pets were to trigger the beams in the fight. But it seems that only a player can.
PS: the opera event was Romeo and Juliette
Edit: The urn is no longer required if u completed the quest chain before. Downed Nightbane easily :)
Okay... I'm only asking for one thing and one thing only...
WHAT'S THE SOUND FILE FOR THIS MUSIC? I MUST HAVE IT!
If you know, please post. I'd like to listen to it while questing and dungeoning.
(P.S. Best music in the game, along with totems of Grizzlemaw, in my opinion! :D)
Kara bosses / random:
Finished soloing it a little bit ago as a Combat rogue. Took just over an hour.
: I sustained around 9.5k DPS on most of the fights. The exception where I was lower than that was Aran, where I had to put on Frost Resist gear and spend a decent amount of energy on Kick which brought that down to about 7.5k.
: Flask of Endless Rage, Runic Healing Injector, Indestructible Potion (as a prepot on physical damage bosses), Runescroll of Fortitude, Drums of Forgotten Kings.
: 33954 health, 13658 armor, 52.99% dodge, 6533 AP, 1068 Haste, 651 hit, 746 crit, 200 expertise. 2457 Agility, 2653 Stamina.
: Improved Recuperate and Reinforced Leather are a must. Aside from that, I used a standard raiding spec.
: Use Major Glyphs of Blade Flurry, Feint, and Sprint, though Cloak of Shadows and Evasion are also options if you're having trouble with physical damage killing you. Prime Glyphs should be Sinister Strike, Adrenaline Rush, and Slice and Dice optimally; Killing Spree is an option over Slice and Dice for burst fights like Aran.
: I used optimal raiding enchants. Nearly every piece of gear was reforged, dropping crit in favor of haste or hit.
: Recuperate is your best friend. It's more important than Slice and Dice for this. Injectors should be used when you're down roughly the amount of health it will restore. Evasion, when not noted, is used to catch up on healing. DPS cooldowns should be burned when they will yield the highest increase in damage unless otherwise noted.
: This one's pretty simple. Clear out the trash and burn him. Cloak of Shadows the -hit debuff if you get it, and Dismantle Attumen to reduce incoming damage.
: Pull from behind so as to avoid socially aggroing trash, and pop Blade Flurry and Killing Spree off the start. Evasioning early while the adds are still up is also a good idea. When Moroes Vanishes (if he lives that long), take that opportunity to burn the remaining adds.
Maiden of Virtue
: Hit her. She dies. Kinda like Attumen. Feint on Cooldown if you have it glyphed, but it's not a big deal really.
: I haven't gotten this one since 4.0.1, but pre-patch it was a simple priority of who to burn down. Dorothy is obviously first because of the Frostbolt spam, followed by the Lion to remove his fear. Beyond that, it's a fairly simple ordeal to finish off the fight.
Romulo and Jullianne
: Make sure to kick all of Julianne's Eternal Affection casts. Save all cooldowns (Evasion, Adrenaline Rush, Killing Spree, and Blade Flurry) for phase 3, as it's the only one where you'll really take damage. After burning both down solo, Blade Flurry and Killing Spree to open in phase 3, following Killing Spree with Adrenaline Rush. Alternatively you can BF and AR, while saving KS for finishing the second one off in event one of them dies much faster than the other. Continue to kick Eternal Affection, and Cloak when possible to mitigate some of Julianne's outgoing damage.
Big Bad Wolf
: Again, I haven't gotten this one since 4.0.1, but I was unable to solo it before the patch as well. I'll update with information when I get this encounter.
: Glyph of Feint and Feinting on cooldown is a big help. Don't stand in Charred Earth. Right before the air phases (75%, 50%, and 25%), refresh Recuperate and get 4-5 CPs back up on him. Refresh Recuperate with these points when the adds begin spawning. Blade Flurry the adds, and refresh Recuperate if it gets low, 1-2 points is fine. Use Evasion during ground phases to play catch up on healing if he gets you down to about 50%.
: I'll be honest, I pulled him by accident this week. I learned from that, though, that you can stealth by and pull him from behind while he's on the ramp without also getting any trash. Save Evasion for his hard enrage at 15%. Use cooldowns to burn him, and Blade Flurry the sparks. Rarely should you have to target swap to kill a spark. Cloak when available (preferably while a spark is up). This fight gets close, mostly because of the Arcane Bolt.
: Again, heavy magic damage causes problems here. Not as bad as Aran, but your health will still dip lower than most of the other fights. Open with Blade Flurry to take down his Imp and get the increased damage on him, then burn his health with cooldowns. Take out the little Imps from time to time with a few Fans of Knives.
: This is the big guy, the hardest fight in the instance for us. Glyph of Kick is pretty much required, as is 170+ Frost Resist. Kick anything you can that's not a Frostbolt, first of all. Try to save Cloak for 40% when the adds spawn. Burn your AR around 50% so you can be ready to push him down ASAP. Get an Expose up before the adds spawn if you don't normally keep it up anyway. Keep him in the middle of the room to avoid bouncing to the adds and pop Killing Spree while continuing to burn him. Cloak a volley of Water Bolts from the adds, and Vanish another (if you Vanish and immediately attack Aran he will not reset). Pray he dies before the Water Bolts overwhelm you.
: Little tricky with this one. Wait for him to patrol close to his door and pull him from range while sprinting out the door. I found, as an engineer, that throwing a Saronite Bomb worked best for this as the travel time gave me an extra moment or two before the door closed. Now, he will hit like a truck because of the Empowered buff. Feint on cooldown to reduce damage from his aura, as well as his breath during phase 2. It's largely a battle of surviving only until phase 2, at which point you put your back to a wall and burn him with everything you've got. Cloak is exceptionally effective during phase 2.
I'm interested to see if this can be done without exploiting the fight, and that's something I'll experiment with in the coming weeks.
: This was soloable at 70 by anyone, nothing new here. It may take a couple of tries to get the hang of if you've never done it before. If you use an addon for buffs, also, have "/cancelaura Control Piece" ready to get out of pieces as you cannot click off buffs currently if using a third party buff frame.
: This is actually far more simple than it seems. Move if an abyssal lands on you, obviously. Feint Shadow Novas, use AR and KS during phase two to burn him through it as quick as possible, and Evasion during phase 3. Save Cloak of Shadows for Amplify Damage.
Can nowadays be soloed by a Shadowpriest (lvl80 ofc).
After Cata released I found a portal entrance blocked by a gate. Its a the top next to a Gryphon nest and the only way up here was to fly. Coincidence?
Well being a prot/ret paladin I have always been farming other raids and it occoured to me that I had never tried to solo Kara so I decided to go for it. Wearing mainly cata greens (ilvl 287, with 2 359 epics).
The trash was silly easy, the mobs have about as much HP as the regulars in cataclysm content, nothing special.
Horseman, easy tank and spank for him, just focus on the horseman and let the horse take splash damage, it was about about 75% hp by the time they mounted up. Fight lasted maybe 4 minutes total. Easy as pie.
Moroe's, just my luck that I ended up with both the holy priest and MS war. I opened the fight with turn evil on the war and popped CDs and destroyed the priest right out. Then worked the others down while keeping the war feared. After the rest of the adds were down I killed the war and then Moroes. The dot he puts on you is negligible and it doesnt stack up so there isnt much to worry about. Pretty easy kill but not as brainless as the Horseman.
Maiden, she was pretty easy but can be cause for a concern depending on gear. Due to her silence aura the only time you can actually cast a heal is if you bubble. I didnt need to but if the fight went on for too much longer I would have but it was still very straightforward. The faster the kill the easier the kill so just pop CDs whenever they are up and spam away. Due to the healing limitations try to keep any damage mitigating abilities up as often as possible.
Opera, this is where I stopped, ended up with little red riding hood.. That just isnt a possible fight to do solo. You take considerable damage when transformed into riding hood and since you are the only one there you get it every time, which works out to about 5 seconds of action, during which he loves to knock you over mid cast followed by 15 seconds of him really beating on your face. Any pointers for those who have soloed him are appreciated but I suspect it cant be done without having much higher level gear to simply absorb what he does to you.
Looking forward to coming back for more once it resets, it was a lot of fun, really took me back haha.
Anyone els having problems after you have done the Opera event, and wanting to go trough the side entrence for Nightbane ? the door just after you enter the side entrence is locked and no matter what I do, it won't open
i soloed little red riding hood just fine on my 80 retadin in full relentless gear a while back, you just have too kite him around the room in circles when you get transformed
Is there anything that affects which boss you get in the opera event? I've done it about a dozen times (rep now maxed with Violet Eye) and only ever seen the Big Bad Wolf boss. Probably just a coincidence but was wondering if this is common.

Tutorial how to get inside karazhan without key
This is cataclysm
Soloed today as enha shaman. avg dps 12,5k ilvl351
nothing special. Just taking around hour cause i was clearing some trash for rep.
I am pretty sure any class can solo Kara right now at lvl 85.
Just did it on a frost mage, no deaths, haven't come close to death even once. On most of the bosses I didn't even have to pop Mirror images to survive.
Chess took the longest (about an hour of attempts).
When you solo that you can only hope for a good rng when the opposing king comes forward fast and you can DPS him by multiple chess pieces. And hope that he doesn't get empowered (in that case he 4-shots most targets).
Dual Druid Duo (L83 Feral/L83 Balance, neither overgeared but with Cataclysm quest greens); full clear took about 3 hours but we were easy going and it was a
clear. This gave us 9725 reputation and approximately 1000g between us after repairs and selling everything.
If you haven't done Karazhan before - not had the opportunity or not in a 'raiding' guild - it's well worth it for entertainment value.
i can solo kara in about 1 hour or 2 depends on how much trash you pull.
i tend to clear the whole place EVERY single mob since its good gold etc. and you can do this place as arms warrior and just pull like ^&*!ing mad and then bladestorm em all down np. the only boss that gave me a problem was nightbane since he actualy hited quite hard so had to go prot for him. otherwise CAKEWALK
how to get into Kara without key in Cata:
Mount up, fly really high in front of the gate, dismount, die, rez on other side of gate, enter.
If you are a warlock - Lifetap to near death, hellfire (No durability loss ftw!)
There ya go.
Possibly in my opinion the greatest and most fun instance in wow
500gold, rare mount, fun fights 1/2 hours. 2 guides explaining how to solo Karazhan:
in cata you can access here from swamp of sorrow if you have 100% mount and skill to go by mountains (found this out with 43lv shaman) in patch 3.3.3
loved it, perhaps a remake for cataclysm?
My absolute very favorite raid of all time. <3
Does the Mount drop from the first Boss still?
Can I use a Volatile Seaforium blastpack to get into the instance?
ooooooooook. guys i think i just find a new raid from Cata ... Idk if im the first one but if you go at Karazhan (not inside) but at the top of it you'll find a Closed Door to a Raid (you can't right click the door to open it) i'll try to post a picture to prove it.
Can someone please explain which bosses / events are required and which ones are skippable?
I was there already once (solo, finished at Netherspite cause didn't know about beams) and got feeleing some bosses i killed were optional - don't know if not killing them won't block something further.
Is it possible to do it that way (considering i want to complete it as fast as possible)?
Skip Servant Quarters
Skip Attumen & Midnight
(i know - it's quick, easy and mount can drop - will do it later tho)
(guess i couldn't enter Opera until i killed it)
Do the Opera Event
(or is it optional?)
Skip Maiden of Virtue
(i didn't kill her when doing it first time, so i guess it's optional)
Kill The Curator
Do the Chess Event
(someone wrote it's required to get access to Prince)
Skip Terestian Illhoof
(i didn't kill it when doing it first time, so i guess it's optional)
Kill Shade of Aran
(or is it optional?)
Kill? Skip? Netherspite
(last time i failed on it so don't really know if it's skippable)
(it's written it can be summoned after defeating Prince so i consider it's optional)
Kill Prince Malchezaar
Also i didn't see any Chess Event after The Curator (as it's listed here on WoWHead), went to Shade, then to Nether and then i failed - probably missed some doors, but just to be sure... Chess Event is the same way as Nether or maybe i should go some other way after The Curator?
Thanks for help in advance.
<Sunwell Crusaders> We are in need of very good tank and mdps and healers. We are currently running random dungeons for rep while some of us are farming heroics for JP. (keep in mind if your group is only lvl 70 in heroic mode you will get 5JP per boss resulting in 275 JP a day from all heroic bosses plus there is quest for JP. 1925 a week also :-)). Know your class and be patient as we assemble raid groups. 60-70 are welcomed. Come to Galakrond and bring back BC raiding we just cleared Zul'aman with 5 members but the rest were all below 85 besides disc healer.
For anyone curious about how badly the gold got nerfed in here,I went in to do my weekly kill of Attumen and got a whopping...3g.
I didn't kill any other bosses, but I assume their gold drops are equally abysmal.
I need a few enchanting recipes from here and have read that some of you guys have soloed this. How would i go about doing that w/o a raid group? Would i need to just invite 4 fellow guildies into a group (to make a total of 5 people - minimum for a raid) just for me to be allowed into Kara and them to do what crap they were doing?
I wouldn't want them to remake it, as it would lose its classic feel. Plus, it would be less raids for level 70 characters and then tier 4 would no longer be obtainable in its original state.
Switch to alt
Have friend invite you to group
Have friend change group to raid
Log off and switch to main
Have friend invite you to group
Have friend promote you to raid leader
Friend can now leave group
You are now in a raid with your offline alt. :-D
Edit: Sorry. This was intended to be a reply to patriknashnl's questions about soloing raids but it showed up as a top level post.
With the removal of the Keyring in 4.2, Karazhan will no longer require a key to enter. Both the main entrance and the side entrance no longer require keys for entry. The side entrance inside is still locked out until you get far enough in the dungeon to unlock on the inside.
Has anyone else noticed the instance portal at the top of Karazhan? It's locked behind an iron gate and there are 2 gryphons near by, like there is going to be a flight master there or something. I really hope this means there is going to be an update to this zone. I miss her so much....
As of Patch 4.2.0, the Master's Key is no longer required to enter Karazhan.
Kara is now possible to solo.
Have soloed all of the bosses and chess event 3 times now with hardly any problems as a destruction lock.
The only problem i had is the chess event, now people are saying this is not possible to solo
but i can confirm is it possible heres how...
Firstly talk to the king to start the event
Exit the king by pressing the red X
Then run to the pawn just in front of the king and play him to move him 1 space in front
Exit the pawn
Run to the pawn on the right side of the pawn you just moved and move him 1 space front
Exit the pawn
Run to the Horse to the right of the king and move him directly in front of the king, Make sure that the horse is facing the opposing team b4 exiting
Exit the horse
Run back to the king and if any of the opposing side is anywhere within 2 spaces of the king spam the button 3 if not then spam button 4 to buff your team.
Now from time to time the space your king is on will set of fire move the king straight away to the next avalible space, but once the space one fire has stopped burning move the king back and don't forget to turn him to face the rest of the opposing team and spam 3 if opposing team is 2 spaces in front of the king if not spam 4
If all is done right and the opposing team moves thier pieces right the opposing king will come within 2 spaces of your king then you can hit it with button 3, Keep doing this till the opposing king is dead
And there you go short version of completing the chess event in Kara
I've read about how the side entrance should be unlocked when we're able to reach it from the inside; however, I am in Kara right now, and have cleared up to chess event, ran back to check, and the side entrance door is still showing locked to me. Can't pick it, even though I'm a rogue, and when I do click on it, it says "The door is locked."
Seems after literally running into the door (from the inside and exiting the instance), it opens up, and "lifts" the restriction of the red 'locked' under the tooltip.
Miss the Kara design so much :/
You can solo this raid with any level 85 class, the damage done to you is nearly irrelevant even in cloth. The chess event is literally the toughest part of the whole place. This should be an easy 30 minute clear for anyone who is farming up their T4 set pieces for patch 4.3.
Not really the most profitable raid to solo. Gold loot alone from bosses Attumen all the way to Prince Malchezaar will swell your backpack with a whopping ~45g, as each boss only drops around 3-4g.
Assuming most loot is belts, boots, etc., possibly a staff or two, and tier tokens, vendor profits will put you at a total of maybe 150g including the boss gold. (In my case this week, 147g)
Classic Ragnaros alone dropped 141g for me last week.
This is one of my,maybe even the favorite Raid in the whole game. It's long, but fun.
Soloable as a frost mage at 85 with ilvl ~350ish - takes some time, you really need to care on netherbane and grab green beam - malchezaar is also a bit hard everything is a walk over. Took me about 1 hour, no wipes.
Also on a side note - dks can do it in 45 mins as frost.
Still one of the best raid dungeons present in the raid in my opinion. I go back to this place every week to kill Attumen for the mount and all the memories I have in this place is really a sweet feeling.
No reputation needed to enter.
No pre-quests needed.
No keys needed.
Soloable on any lvl 85 character.
Just did as a shadow priest.
I recently solo'd this place with my enhancement shammy (381 ilvl). The only real challenge was the chess event. It took me about 20 or so tries to beat it, after trying several different strategies I read. The one that finally worked is this one (and on the first try) :
1. Control king to start event then start his bloodlust move and attack.
2. Switch control to queen and move her ahead of the pawn in front of her.
3. Spam the queen's ranged attack at the king.
4. Move queen and king when the boss cheats and places fire under them.
5. Continue attacking king with queen until she dies.
6. With luck, the king will be in attacking range with your king.
7. Finish attacking the king with your king.
8. Win (hopefully)
Like I said, this worked the first time I tried it. I realize there is luck involved with how your opponent moves, but all of the other strategies just frustrated me after failing a lot.
Duo'ed this today with BM hunter and Elemental Shammy (ilvl 390+). Chess event stumped us, we had to try it 4-5 times but we finally got it down. Mostly, we followed the advice you'll find in here - start with the king and hero, do some movement of other pieces and then we got down to one person in the king, one in the conjurer or healer depending.
Chess event and, to a far lesser extent, Netherspite, are the only two bosses that will challenge someone soloing this place.
Chess event is really a trial and error thing, most of the time you're simply relying on the enemy to move their king out early. The most important thing to do is to make sure you have an open space next to your king and at least one of your priests and move them to that open space whenever Medivh throws down fire on the squares they're standing in. The ideal situation you're aiming for is for their king to be 1 on 1 with your king while you go as a priest and just heal yours up. Sometimes he'll completely ignore his king and move the rest of his pieces up, so just be patient and wait for him to slip up.
Netherspite can be difficult if you don't have the gear to just dps him down. Easiest way to kill him is pull him into the back centre of the room and then put his back against the wall. When the beams come out you should be getting all three of them and be able to kill him before the next phase without any risk of dying.
If you're looking to solo this place for gold, don't bother. I would recommend Serpentshrine Cavern - all the bosses drop 250g each and, excluding Lady Vashj, are easily soloable.
Just soloed this entire raid as a lvl 85 ret pally in ilvl 396 gear. There was only really 1 hard part in the entire raid and that's the chess boss because it boils down to luck generally.
The only other boss that had me worried for a sec was Netherspite because it had been so long since I did it and I forgot the mechanics of the fight and I didn't bother to look them up, so when I saw his health start to regen I was 'oh #$%^' lol, but anywayz I just burnt him down so I suppose if your dps is good enough you can just zerg him and forget mechanics.
My strat for the chess was...
1. Use the mage and water elementals as much as possible because they hit hard. Stack them in front of the king if you can, and king can still hit people in the row ahead of them.
2. Don't forget your focus - kill their king. Don't get caught up on their pawns or you'll die. Just zerg warcheif at every chance you get.
3. Move out of fire ASAP
Good luck everyone!
Strange,i founded today(Mentioned in patch 4.3 hotfixes) than the now deprecated quest
will be removed from character's logs of the ones who still have it,i have founded that it was a side quest from karazhan to help and release Keanna's Soul from Prince Malchezar, but i cant found the ending text about how it ends and i'm curious, can someone tell me?
Netherspite does not need to be pulled out of the room to solo him. If you pull him straight past one of the buffing portals, standing in between him and the portal allows you to absorb the energy of 2 or 3 of them.
I soloed him today using this technique with a Prot Paladin ilvl 350, CTC 80%. The fight is not high in random burst damage, so I was actually able to stay alive through several of his phases. This was the first time I ever fought him. When I saw that he was healing himself through the portals, I alt+tabbed to wowhead to look up how to stop the healing, and was able to easily keep myself alive with Word of Glory.
He could be soloable with other classes or specs with a similar ilvl and knowing the boss fight.
all non elite mobs have been nerfed big time.
they now only drop copper and if you are lucky, you get a food item that sells for 2 silver.
no netherweave cloth or anything. just copper >.<
people can now (Cataclysm) access this instance without any key requirement. All you need is to form a raid ofc.
Strategy for one/two players from the
Solo/Duo Old Raid Compendium
, done at level 85 at patch 4.3 with ilvl 385-395 gear:
All the trash before
Attumen the Huntsmen
will aggro upon aggroing the boss, so it is advisable to clear it first.
mobs will put an
on you. There are a few that you have to aggro to continue, so burn them down as quickly as possible before they have a chance to cast it on you.
All not mentioned: Easy
The Opera Event
The Red Riding Hood encounter can be difficult because you are forced to run away (and cannot attack) from the wolf while transformed or he will hit you for a good amount of damage even at 85, then you have a very small amount of time to DPS him before he repeats the process.
Also, Romeo and Juliet must die at the same time, which is not very difficult at level 85, but worth noting.
Will have three beams of light coming from each side of the room towards him. By facing him near where he starts in the back of the room, you can stand where all three of the beams converge and get all 3 of them before they hit him. If this does not work, try to pick up just two and burn him down that way.
The Chess Event
Difficult to solo because of mechanics, but is doable. The easiest strategy is to get in the king at the beginning and wait for their king to come out, then just spam attack on it until you can bring it down. This method will rely on RNG, as it requires their king to come out first and for you not to get dealt too much fire damage via cheating. But, if you do this enough, eventually this scenario will play out and you will be able to advance. If you would like to try a more detailed/strategic approach, read this
Keep in mind that in order to pull
, it does require you first to be honored with
The Violet Eye
and then complete a quest chain starting with
that in turn includes killing
Shade of Aran
. It is possible to get honored on your first run (like on an alt) but you will have to kill
including the spiders and bats in the basement. Just hold off on Shade until you get to the quest
The Shade of Aran
I was able to solo everything on my level 85 ilvl 377 enhancement shaman without much stress including my first attempt at the
, just follow the other comments below on the strategy. So for example if you are trying for the
off Nightbane like me, then have fun on your alt and good luck!
One final note is that the front door no longer requires you have a key to get in, so if you are doing this on an alt you can just walk without completing that long quest chain. However, after completing the
the back door is still locked and can only either be opened from the inside or by a
Cobalt Skeleton Key
. So instead of going around like we all used to do after Opera, be sure to take the door that opens up on the other side of the stage which you will need to do anyway in order to kill more mobs for rep.
With patch 5 for pre-MoP - Chess event seems to be bugged. Keep losing over & over and I have done this many times before as a duo
Wow. Pre 5.0 I could drag the entire first hallway up to Midnight and kill them in a pile, losing about 40% health as a bear.
I just died and managed to kill about 5 mobs... /sadface.
Was this not a BC Raid? Why is it listed under Classic now?
Just soloed kara as a ret pally ilevel 441. Pretty much easy. the chess took around 5 tries but just follow the chess guides under the comments on wowhead on it. last boss lasted 24 seconds, lol. burned him down before he summoned the infernals. Didn't get anything for transmog tho :( cool looking shield from chess event but that was pretty much it. Had fun tho. made about 300g off of looting and vendor trash. not too bad for a few hrs work.
I can confirm that the Chess Event is still soloable at 90. I completed it on a lvl 90 mage on my 2nd try(about an hour or so ago). I would have one shot it if I wasn't busy messing with one of my Rotties. :)
Simply move the first few pawns in front of King.
If leave vehicle doesn't work, RIGHT click on control peice buff to remove it.
Wait for 10 second Debuff, rinse repeat.
Stay out of flames. Cleave on CD.
Thanks and have a good day!
: i am a Goblin DK, and i got to the Opera part and wanted to see if i could Rocket Jump to the stage.
: You get on the stage and cant get off, i had to Death Gate out a fly back to the instance, this is for the
who want to kill time by trying things out, just don't. You have been WARNED!
I was able to solo the Chess Event today after a number of tries and honestly I think I won more through blind luck more than any particular strategy. However, if you don't already know, you need to initiate the event by speaking to King Llane, but
you can immediately drop control and select a different piece
. I'd recommend getting your pawns up as quickly as possible to give the king a chance to maneuver when Medivh cheats. You don't want to be standing in the fire turn after turn. Also, remember that you have two Clerics who can both heal the king. It's not a lot, but it can make a difference. Try to engage the Warchief as early as possible and with as many pieces as you can. The Knights are very useful for moving up to engage him.
The name for Karazhan was most likely inspired by the androgynous name "Karayan" which originates from the country of Armenia and,
in the Armenian language, means "the dark one".
Here's my method of grinding The Violet Eye rep
(Note: This guide is really only for people who have already cleared Kara (or at least have killed the first boss and are unable to reset). If you have the ability to reset, then I would recommend doing that, as the mobs I mention below *do* reset with the instance. Just be sure to space your entrances out by 12 mins.
I actually ran
for the first time (on any of my toons) the other day. I am a level 90 Arcane mage with a 483 iLevel. I also have the level 12 guild perk
along with the
: Due to the "5 instance entrances per hour" cap, you need to spread out your entrances by 12 mins (which with this guide is very easy to do) I like to use the in-game stopwatch to make sure I am spacing my entrances out enough.
When I rep grind I usually look for a renewable way of grinding the rep in dungeons and raids. However I was running Kara with a guildmate so we ended up doing a full clear. I did also end up doing all of the quests outside of the raid entrance and completed as many as I could (until I am able to run Kara again and finish the rest). I did notice something, though, as I was doing the quests. As soon as you enter Kara (and go through the door) turn to the right, in that room there is a spider, through the next rooms are more spiders, eventually you will get to an area with bats, and through there a room with dogs.
All of these mobs respawn every 30 mins
(and yes I actually waited and can confirm it's every 30) Yes, I am now aware that there is another post on here that says that, but I am making this post to 1. Confirm this is true and 2. Describe my method to maximize rep grind. Note: I was also grinding this rep along with
which I have also written a detailed rep grinding guide
). I would do two runs of Scale of the Sands and then come and do one run of Violet Eye.
: My route is important as it maximizes the number of mobs I grab in the shortest distance. I need to try to do it as fast as I can before my
falls off. Also, this is to confirm that trash mobs DO give rep through exalted.
I would enter the raid and start my stopwatch. Go through the door and head into the spider room. I would throw up my
as I am a clothie and this, am squishy. and run by the first spider, aggroing him. Note, I never actually did any damage until the end when I being AOEing. Going into the next room I would grab the spider on the right, then the ones on the left. There is a patroling spider in the next room that will come up one of the two ramps, I would then run down the same ramp, aggroing him. I would then run to the right to grab the spider in the corner, then make my way across the room, grabbing the two spiders in the middle and the two in the far corner. I would then head into the bat room. I would grab the bats, then head to the right and grab the bats in the other half. There is a little alcove with bats in it, grab them (and remember this spot). Pull all of the spiders and bats into the doorway of the next room (with the dogs) and while in the doorway drop your
for Alliance) and begin to AOE. Dropping the banner here *is* important. once everything you've already aggroed is dead begin to make your way through the room killing all of the dogs. Once you reach the end and have all of the mobs dead you're done..... OR ARE YOU?
Why I placed my banner where I did
I'm not exactally sure why this happens, either it's how fast you kill the mobs, or where you kill them, or it may actually happen every time and no one has noticed. But once you are done, a rare will spawn. One of three rares will spawn (either a bat, a spider, or a dog). The bat rare
spawns in the little alcove just off the bat room (the one I said to remember). The spider rare
spawns in the previous spider room in the corner (next to where you came into the bat room). If you get the spider rare, walk over there slowly and only go as far as you need to to kill him, you do this to stay in range of your battle standard. I have yet to have the dog rare
spawn and I've done this about 15 times (EDIT: The 2nd run after I posted this, I got the dog. he spawns at the end of the room, opposite the entrance, where all the other dogs are). People have said you get one of these to spawn if you have killed every mob in the servants quarter. However, I just did it (it's Tuesday so Kara should be respawned) and I only killed the spiders, bats and dogs (which may BE the only mobs in the servants quarters. Like I said, I've only ran Kara once). If you get the battle standard bonus for all of the mobs you will get ~1300 per run, and since the mobs respawn every 30 mins that's ~2600 rep per hour.
So I would recommend, if you're wanting to grind Kara rep to go ahead and do all of the quests (or as many as you can), then do a full clear of the raid, then begin grinding the spiders, bats and dogs. You should be at exalted in no time.
Never Give up. It will appear.
Now that 5.3 is live,
Raiding With Leashes II: Attunement Edition
helps us spend more hours in Karazhan. It is now farmable for even more reasons (not least of which have been
Fiery Warhorse's Reins
However, if you've been farming it forever/long enough to get the items you want (and if you are very lucky,
has been nice and given you
"a vampire horse that is on fire"
rather than simply attempting to disperse some petty rabble--you) you may be looking for the quickest path to try to get your own
The only bosses/events you MUST kill/partake in are
(to enable the Opera event), the Opera Event (for the pet!),
(for the pet, also),
(yes...for the pet), the Chess Event (sad faces) and
You can avoid all other mobs and bosses and have a relatively quick run (given that the Chess Event doesn't sap your will to live.)
Once you get whatever pets you need Illhoof becomes optional but Opera, Curator and Chess stay necessary until you get the Netherspace Abyssal.
Hope this helps someone as I was wondering how to do this most quickly. I've spent more time writing this than running Karazhan today.
Good luck with drops!
Seems like the dreaded chess event might have gotten a little easier this past week.
From the hotfix notes for the 5.3 patch, this change on May 24:
Chess Event: Medivh's buff to damage on chess pieces has been reduced to 100%, down from 200%.
Chess Event: Damage from Medivh's fire has been reduced to 4k, down from 10k.
I haven't had a chance to go in and see what effect these changes have on soloing the match, but it will be interesting to try.
There's no need to do the attunement or anything else to access the raid, but you DO need to be at least neutral with
in order to enter the instance. I went with a character that had never encountered any of this faction guys before and the gate didn't open, I talked to
just outside, became neutral with faction and was allowed access. I did have to log out and back in, though.
How to solo the Chess Event in
Speak to your King
/Chief to start the event and buff your troops (
) before stopping control of the gamepiece. Note: there is a debuff every time you leave a piece that forces you to wait a few seconds before jumping onto the next one. Watch for this and wait until its up or you will be clicking in vain!
Move the Pawns in front of the Knights
one space forward (
). Move the Rooks (elementals/demons at the outer edges of the board) diagonally where the pawns used to be. This brings their AoE within range of the main battle area in the middle.
Move the Pawns in front of the King and Queen
pieces so that when Medivh cheats, you can move your King out of the fire. Note: always move him unless the enemy King is almost dead.
Jump on the Queen piece and melt the enemy King's face
) until the match is over. If he's not within range right away, don't worry he'll come to you soon enough. Typically, you will move your own King out of the fire once and the rest of the time you'll be spamming the single target spell until he's down.
now that the barrier is down and run upstairs for a chance at
pet - good luck!
Other important bosses along the way:
(one of several possible bosses you face after speaking to
for the Opera Event)
Karazhan was originally going to have a weapon quest similar to Quel'delar and tied to Karazhan's main questline but was scrapped before launch. The only remnant of this quest is
, which has been incorporated into the live questline.
Keanna was a Kirin Tor agent sent into Karazhan to investigate the tower. Sometime after writing
her soul was somehow trapped within a sword by
and lost within Karazhan. Finding
would begin a series of quests, beginning with
Deprecated: Keanna's Will
to free her spirit and doing so would reward you with an epic weapon.
A player in posession of
could use it to summon her spirit and talk to her via the spell:
Weren't we suppose to be able to complete this without keys ? I got stuck with a locked door above the ballroom... Am I missing something ?
Finding the Side Door.
It is in the very first section of the Broken Stairway. Halfway down and on your left. Its a double set of doors and very easy to overlook. Coords are 61.4, 63.7.
OK, I may be a bit dense. Where are the Broken Stairs? As the last post stated, I too can only get to the Banquet Hall and can go no farther. Being retired affords me time to navigate Karazhan, I just cannot figure out how to get beyond the First part. Did the requirements for the quest chain come back? I dunno, need help/advised/directions.
Chess event guide, easy and effective. Time: 5min.
The hardest part of the Chess game has to be that if Medivh won't move his King out, you can't win. And that's RNG.
It doesn't matter how many pieces you kill, the game ends when one king dies.
If you can get two pieces into a position to beat on his King, you can win, provided you keep your King safe. He can even be one of them, as long as the enemy king ain't faving him.
Karazhan is currently undergoing some sort of 'restoration', which includes having spiderwebs and skeletons removed. These changes may go forward to 5.4.2.
Some new information has been released about Karazhan: It was originally planned to be used for a scenario as part of the event preceding Warlords of Draenor, but was scrapped.
It is questionable and interesting to point out, to what could be possible, that inside of Kara could be linked to another dimension as the tower seems to connect into another world as you climb higher, looking up above as you climb the floors and platforms reveal the tower has no celling an appears to be shattered, and the final encounter against the prince is placed on what looks like a a floating earthy platform surrounded by floating spires and rock.
It opens many possibilities in future content in lore. But where exactly does this rift lead us into makes me wonder.
There are a few places in this raid that are "outside", meaning you can summon a mount, so if you have a
Traveler's Tundra Mammoth
, you have vending and repair services right there.
I think that the Opera Hall is currently my favorite boss fight...it's just so majestically glorifying
Karazhan is the best raid Blizzard has ever done in 10 years of raid content (IMO). Just a great, great design.
As a big fan of the lore in World of Warcraft, I just love going through Kara and being able to relive every time all that has happened in this place. Its definitely my favorite raid in all the game.
It would be nice if the list of bosses were in order they were encountered. I had a difficult time figuring out where I was and where I was going next. Notably: Nightbane is after the Opera Event and before the Curator, and Terestian Illhoof and Shade of Aran are located before you get to Netherspite, which is to one side as you get to the Chess Event.
Just spent several hours trying to figure out how to move out of king and onto other chess pieces. Turns out the Addon "Bartender"doesn't recognize the action button that you normally would use (marked with red "X"). Had to disable the Bartender addon and it worked perfectly from then on. Could be a glitch in my config files but curious if anyone else has run into this problem?
If you kill all the audience before starting the opera, who gasps at the intro? :)
Been farming Lil Wolf, can't seem to get any opera event except Romeo and Juliet. Diffrent toons diffrent times. Any sugesstions?
solo'd kara on 75-76 windwalker monk. no real problems. have to go back to do netherspite as i didnt know how to deal with the portals. apparently just stand in front of the green one to prevent it healing. - yep, not a problem that way. finished with 15 mins left on the instance lock.
a few good chess videos around. move the pawns in front of the knights, move the rooks into the spaces just vacated. move the pawns in front of the king and queen. move the king forward to avoid the cheat flames. control queen and shoot their king. should be fine from there. might need to control king to finish off
I bet this dungeon is gonna get a legion revamp :)
The view out the front door of Karazhan is subtly different, depending on if you are in the instance or outside of it. I've submitted a screenshot. (And left the same comment and screenshot on the Deadwind Pass page.)
Entrance is located at 47.01, 75.11 in Deadwind Pass not too far from Stormwind.
Solo'd Kara today and the chess thing was every bit as annoying as I'd heard. I got past it by just switching between the two clerics and healing my king once the other side's pieces got to him. Don't even bother trying to play chess like this. It's a headache. Just kill what pieces you can and then control the clerics to keep your king healed.
Just after leaving the opera theater, I used the side door to go out of the instance and vendor some items. Upon walking back through the side door portal, I was zoned into the Gatehouse at the start of the raid. This happened to me multiple times, each time I tried.
Is this a new issue with the pre-Legion patch, or has this happened a lot with cross-realm zones?

This Raid Will Still Exist After Patch 7.1
If you find that the
debuff remains even after you finish the chess-game a solution is apparently to talk to the Shade of Medivh and reset the board.
Here's the original post
Just talked to Echo of Medivh and reset the chess game and the debuff went away.
I have confirmation from someone affected by this bug that this fixed it.
late comment here, but i found a way to that almost always guarantees me a win to the chess game solo.
1) Go in the two pawn pieces in front of the wolves. move them forward one square. Do the same for the one in front of king.
2) Now move demons in front of the wolves.
3) Get in the king and wait for enemy to cast fire ability (he's going to cheat and say something before he does it) and move up one square where pawn was. The goal is just to get out of the fire.
4) Next get in warlock and kill enemy clerics and move when needed to avoid damage. Spam the fire attack on enemy king until he is dead.
5) Congrats! you won
Comment added here and the Chess Event - I took control of Warchief Blackhand to start the event. Dismissed the him and was teleported to the ramp. Took control of an Orc Necrolyte, spammed 4 while using the occasional heal. Eventually King Llane approached and killed him. I moved over one space to give myself more time to heal and attack. With no King of mine to kill, the event worked just fine. Assuming this would work for the Alliance.

BEST CHESS STRATEGY FOR KARAZHAN
King's Indian Attack:
E1 Knight to F3
G2 Pawn to G3
White-Square Bishop to G2
King to G1 (castle with Rook)
This strategy was successful in defeating the chess game with only two players. Obviously this is going to be harder to solo with, but I'm sure you're aware of the difficulties involved with switching between pieces rapidly. However, the true beauty of the KIA in this scenario is the fact that it will leave your king in a very well-defended spot while performing the chess game, allowing you to develop your left side without fear of what's going to happen to the king. When the squares start catching fire, you can always move the king to H1 or swing the rook out to E1 to give the King some more breathing room.
When the enemy pieces advance, they will break themselves over the pawn's delta formation in the lower-right hand part of the board, also allowing you more time to take care of them before they even get close. The Bishop will be unusable for a while, but when the Bishop becomes exposed most of the forces will be on low-mid health and will be easy pickings for your Queen, Bishop, or even your King. After that, it's only a matter of directing your forces at the enemy King. This strategy may end up taking more time than other strategies as well, but the safety of this strategy cannot be paralleled.
So all the comments worked fine until this latest 8.0 patch where the NPCs basically kill each other with only 3 hits. Since the controls in this chess match make it so hard to spam keys to take control of the characters, most are dead before you can do much. It was working fine up until now. Hopefully this gets repaired soon for those of us that need the helm from the Prince.
Did this today, chess is still doable. This was my first time trying, simply took a healer piece and kept myself and the king fully healed. Did a little damage when I could, but that was it. Easy.
Tried Chess Today and for me it was totally bugged - when you hop out of a Piece it will vanish and not come back.
So you end up with no Chess Pieces but the Event is still running.
I submitted a screenshot show this.
I found no way to get past that eveent and no way to reset it but HS out.
To reach Karazhan, take the zeppelin from Org. to Stranglethorn Vale. The portal to Silvermoon City is a very long ride to Stonard. From there take the flight path to Stonard in Swamp of Sorrows. Follow the road west towards Deadwood Pass (Duskwood). Turn southwest. Most stuff is on the south side of the castle.
Just tried the chess game today and the King disappeared after starting the game. Lost a few other pieces in the same way. All remaining pieces killed and stuck pacified. :-/
As of 10/20/19 (for me at least),the chess event is still bugged and it's possibly the worst so far (what a surprise.)
Here's a couple bugs I found (and reported to the in-game bug system);
1. As I finished the event, the door to the final boss opens and a box pops up asking if I would still want to continue on the raid with (10/11) bosses killed (different number if you've skipped the optional bosses)
I was not in a raid group at all,it struck me a strange that it would pop up asking that.
It seemed like I was still pacified (even though I've literally killed all of the opposing pieces). But I talked to Medivh and asked him to reset the board (which still kept the door open, thank N'zoth) and it removed the stupid debuff.
2. The chest acted as if I never won the chess event at all, I am unable to open it, no gears pop up for it.
Instead of a crappy "chess" game that isn't even played like an actual chess game, make a boss that looks like a chess piece and let us loot the body.
It's not that hard coming up with a solution for something as buggy as this.
This is how I did it with the current "only King usable" bug:
Pick the King and just don't move.
Use BL whenever it is up and just do cleave. You'll outrange the enemy their king walks straight up to you.
This is more a question for the community, rather than a comment.
I am trying to recover my old T4 set pieces. I deleted mine before transmog became available to make room for other gear in-I-forget-what-expansion (probably a decade ago at this point :/). I've started solo-ing old content to re-get my old gear for the look. for T4, I have run Gruul and Kara a few times now and the set pieces aren't dropping. I've noticed that Kara is now a 10-man. The in-game Adventure Guide lists the gear as available on the bosses. When I kill them, nothing from those sets drop. Ever.
What am I doing wrong? Anyone else encountered a similar problem?
Some guidance would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
This is part 2/2 of my recommended route through Karazhan. First part can be found here:
5 - Opera Hall
From the Gatehouse we take the main entrance (behind
), and upstairs the Grand Ballroom should be all cleared. We go right and upstairs again to the upper floor, and we are now facing the passage to the Opera Hall.
Inside we are clearing the bench floor and the patrolling
. On the right innermost side goes our way downstairs and through the empty orchestra pit. Upstairs again and we are backstage with mobs spread through the area.
At backstage we have the NPC
we have to speak to for proceeding to the opera scene. Note that he wont let you proceed unless
in the Banquet Hall is killed. At the opera scene do we get to participate in a random theatrical setup - a random boss. This is my absolute favourite part of Karazhan - always exciting with variety and great dialogues.
At the end a door opens up and we head upstairs to the mid balcony level surrounding the opera. And further upstairs to the upper level where mobs are sitting in each second balcony - easily overlooked reputation. At this upper level do we have a passage in southeastern direction to the Broken Stairs.
6 - Master's Terrace and The Broken Stairs
Through said passage from the upper opera floor we are heading downstairs to a down-sloping corridor with spread mobs. At the bottom we have a slope going upwards, and under this slope is an open doorway out to Master's Terrace. Midways through this circular terrace do we have a
which when interacted summons the optional boss
. Although this boss gives 250 unbuffed reputation, the combat phases are forced and it takes 1,5 minutes to complete - despite Nightbane being oneshot at first hit. So it is up to you if this boss is worth the time it takes.
Through the terrace and inside again we have a lone mob on left side, besides an unlockable door to the inner upper floor surrounding the Grand Ballroom. We do not head this way, but this is a shortcut out and back in again if you need to head to a vendor.
Instead we head to the right and ends up at the bottom of the sloped corridor we initially came from, and we head up the slope on right side following the outer wall. The Broken Stairs is chaotic yet linear with few spread mobs, and at the end we are reaching a titan/dwarven statue in a circular room.
7 - The Menagerie and Guardian's Library
Through the room passing said statue, we enters the Menagerie. This is a straight forward corridor with the boss
. From here we proceed through to the ground level of Guardians Library and every spellcaster's nightmare. The ground floor have plenty of packs of
- which are immune against any schools of magic! Even
s struggle with these. Luckily these barely gives any reputation at all and are worth skipping for spellcasters.
On the left side do we have a slope heading up to the upper levels, and this route is somewhat linear. after sloping upwards through two rooms our way slopes downwards towards a room with
- white imps. When turning left we see an interactable section of the book shelf wall named "Disconcerting Bookshelf", hiding a dead-end hallway to the optional boss
Proceeding from the room with the Disconcerting Bookshelp upwards to next room, and here we on left side have the Private Library Door leading to a side room with
. Straight forward takes us upwards a linear path untill we reach a circular room with
. From here we have a left slope up leading us to
, and a right slope down taking us further in to the vendor NPC
8 - Gamesman's Hall
On the left side of
do we have the doorway to Gamesman's Hall - the worst piece of chesslike minigame to ever exist. The easiest way to a win for Alliance is:
1. Interact with
and the game starts. Leave him immediately. Alliance = white bricks, Horde = black bricks. Interact with next piece ASAP when the game debuff goes away, and leave the pieces right after moving them. You do not need to control them see them move, they will move anyway.
at g2 to g3
at f2 to f3
at h1 to g2, and further to f2
6 Eventually move up a
at d2 or e2 to give room to move
away from fire. Move back and repeat step 5.
No strategy are failsafe due to the rng, but this strategy is the easiest to do for maintaining a highest possible chance to win.
You will have to leave the brick manually when the game is won, and the loot is in a spawning Dust Covered Chest on western side of the room.
The doorway on eastern side is now open as we can enter the innermost part of Karazhan.
9 - Medivh's Chambers and Netherspace
We enter a room with an upgoing slope on left side, and a room with stairs on right side. Clear the room, and clear the room on right side. Although there is a stair going up, we wont go up that way. Instead we head for the slope on left side of the first room which takes us up to Medivh's Chambers.
In Medivh's Chambers there are mobs in every room, and we reaches the mid section of a staircase starting at the room we previously cleared.
Further upstairs do we get an opening in the wall leading to an upper terrace and circular room with one single mob. It is up to you if this sidetrack is worth 15 reputation.
Going all upstairs takes us above the previous sidetrack and into a circular room with another single mob. From here goes a passage to Netherspace and a constantly running
- being Karazhan's last boss and giving us 500 reputation towards
I have been farming Karazhan for
rep and mats on five alts, and have found the following route to be the most efficient farming route including the bosses. Sadly this got too long for one comment, and I had to split it up. Part 2/2 can be found here:
1 - Servant's Quarters
When entering the Gatehouse, go straight to the right to the cellar (Servant's Quarters). Although you only will find spiders, bats and hounds here, all gives reputation all the way to exalted!
If you are looking for
, all bats and hounds are skinnable and there is a short way out for reset. Also the hounds are lucrative if you are interested in
Be ware of the rare boss spawns here:
- might spawn in the spider area when killing enough trash.
- might spawn in the eastmost bat room when killing enough trash.
- might spawn innermost in the hounds room when killing enough trash.
2 - The Guest Chambers
From The Servant's Quartes there is a hallway in westmost bat area going up to the Guest Chambers. This area is pretty straight forward: clear the hallway and the three rooms on the left side. At the end of the hallway is the boss
. Then go all the way back to the start of the hallway, and the doorway facing south that we ignored when we came here.
3 - The Grand Ballroom and Banquet Hall
Enter said doorway from the Guest Chambers. On the right side is the passage to the Opera Hall - ignore that one for now. We will go there later. Instead we are clearing the upper floor around the Banquet Hall and Grand Ballroom. The mobs are spread and few, and gives only a small amount of rep, so this upper floor can be skipped altogether.
On the left side is the stairs down to the Grand Ballroom with plenty of mobs. Here facing south is also the main entrance - stairs to the Gatehouse. If your bags are full, this is a good opportunity to head out to a vendor. However, if you are at least revered with
and still have room in your bags, there is a vendor inside not too far away on our route.
Head westwards into the Banquet Hall, and clear the hall. Don't forget
in the westmost part of the hall, otherwise we can't proceed through with the Opera boss!
4 - Livery Stables
After clearing the Banquet Hall, we head through the doorway on south side to the Scullery AKA kitchen. Clear the room and head further south into the Livery Stables. This circular upper floor is split onto four rooms with patrolling mobs: The room we just entered, the living room on right side, bed room on left side, and stairs room on the opposite side. Our first room have a door - Blood Stained Door - leading to an empty side room named the Guardhouse. I have no clue what it is for, and I have never seen anyone in it.
We walk in a circle clearing the rooms before heading back to the room on opposite side and downstairs.
The room downstairs have two pack of mobs, one which is easily overlooked behind the stairs. This room have the NPC
who is available as vendor and repair when we are at least revered with
Further do we have the centre room with
, which summons
when attacked. Clearing our way through the circular ground floor, and we reach the Gatehouse again. If you have full bags - this is yet an opportunity to head out.
See part 2/2 here:
Here's the most efficient routes if you only are interested in bosses:
You will get loot from the bosses, but you wont get that much trash loot, reputation, nor reagents like motes and cloth. If you are looking for the most efficient route for full trash clear/rep farm, you can find my guide here:
Servant's Quarter Rares
If you are interested in the rare bosses
, you have to grind Servant's Quarters. To get there you take the first doorway on right side after entering the instance. Then you need to clear the rooms in this basement for spiders, bats, and hounds, and the rares might spawn. If they do not, head outside and reset the instance. When you are done you head back out to the Gatehouse.
Living Stables - Attumen the Huntsman
Head straight forward through the Gatehouse, and you ends up in the circular Livery Stables. Here at the ground level will you find
, which summons
and can drop
. If you want to proceed to the other bosses, you can either head back to the Gatehouse or head further in and upstairs. Here you can't avoid trash unless you stealth, and will have to fight trash through the circular upper floor, the kitchen, and into the Banquet Hall where Moroes is.
Every other bosses
The other bosses but
are locked and can not be accessed unless you kill
and do the Opera boss.
To get to Moroes from the Gatehouse you head up the second doorway on right side - the main entrance. Once upstairs at The Grand Ballroom you head left to the Banquet Hall and can find Moroes on the westmost part.
Then head back to The Grand Ballroom where you find a doorway on northern side - and stairs to the upper floor.
Upstairs you will face a passage in front of you, and have a doorway on right side. The passage in front of you takes you to the Opera Hall, and from here is the instance linear. The route further in is described in part 2 of my guide which you can find here:
I mentioned a doorway upstairs on right side, this leads to a parallel corridor. Head eastwards through the corridor and you will have
at the end.
