Very nice to see a reference to the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.
Specifically, for those curious, it references the ability some characters in the books have to 'Push' (with kinetic force) on metal, in many instances coins, to propel themselves over obstacles, or along routes for travel. One of the main characters who had this ability was titled the Survivor of Hathsin.
neat item, wonder how you acquire it.
For a little more detail as to the origins of this item:
is the 'Survivor' and carried a bag of coins which he used for
No, really, double disengage ftw!
This is now my favorite item based purely on the references. Sanderson is one of my favorite authors and just reading the name and description delighted me. I'll definitely be hunting for this item once it goes live regardless of how difficult it may end up being to obtain or if its effect suffers a severe nerf.
Just saw this through Brandon's blog and think it's a great shout out to him from WoW. Can't wait to see it live (on the blog they weren't sure if it was going to be pushed back to 2014 for release).
So apparently i've secretly been eating steel this entire time.
Not too surprising, actually, considering that i play a tank warrior.
Of more relevance, it seems as through the bag does not have a GCD. I wonder if i can use it during Bladestorm... Through i doubt it would be usable in combat anyhow, but.
E: oh, great, it was made Rogue Only shortly after i posed the above.
May be tied to
--his name spelled backwards is Kelsier.
How cool is that? Loooooved Mistborn and waiting for Sanderson to write his #2 of the sequel.
Strange there's no information anywhere and 5.2's been out for a couple of weeks. Rogues need to share their information! (My rogue is leveling and will want one of these someday!)
This item is awarded by the ghost "Orsur"
who is at the bottom of Ravenholt manor. To get the item, you need to use the Glyph of Disguise to disguise yourself at
. Then you can use the Glyph of Detection to make the ghost appear and he will give you the item.
Zoning into Pandaria will drop your coin stacks. Have not tried other areas yet.
Use in conjunction while using a Goblin Glider for maximum fun.
Gonna leave a little bit of info here about this item.
Rogues are the only class the can obtain it. It seems to be a reference to a movie or book I have not seen before. You cannot use it inside or in combat. Phasing in any way will remove the coins. You get 0-4 coins per pickpocket. You fly about 30 yards in the opposite direction you throw the coin. There is no GCD.
A few things about this item:
This is (obviously) a
When pickpocketing the coins will not show up in a loot window. The player will instead receive the buff "Survivor's Bag" with the number of coins you have. (While the buff is always present if the player is carrying the bag, the picture will change to silver coins when the player has at least 1.)
The max number of coins you can have is 50.
Pickpocketing appears to yield 1-4 coins. Edit: Cannot be obtained from mobs that are unable to be pickpocketed.
(Added by Akumaxx ^_^)
Phasing will remove any coins you currently have. (i.e using hearthstones, going through portals, entering/leaving instances.) Dying, however, will not.
Switching from cross realm to non-cross realm zones will also reset your coins.
(Thanks Valarrian! :D)
Coins can be pickpocketed off mobs in dungeons, however they still can only be used outside. Leaving the instance will reset your coins.
It is possible to launch yourself, then place another coin before you hit the ground to lauch again on landing.
Double jumping, however, is not possible.
Nevermind, user error, it's possible! :D Just keep throwing the coins while in the air.
You will still take fall damage if the ground you are landing on is a lower elevation than the one you launched off... So no high cliffs. Use at own risk. :)
These work while mounted! :D
If you find the buff distracting you can click it off without destroying the item, however any coins you have will reset.
Please comment with any updated information or anything you'd like to add!

*11/07/2013 Edited to make it look prettier :3
Make sure you have
and equip them.
Go to 70.6, 50.6 in Hillsbrad Foothills where you will find
at the top of the mountain. (He can be reached without a flying mount by running up the hill from Ravenholdt Manor.)
Edit: Note that without the ability to use flying mounts, the bag itself is not usable.
Pickpocket him to disguise yourself as him.
Walk to the north down the hill (can't mount while disguised) to Ravenholdt Manor and go downstairs to the basement.
(check the General tab of your spellbook) to reveal the ghost
under the stairs.
Talk to him to receive
Pickpocket humanoids to get "coins"
Pickpocketing gives 1-4 coins (after a short delay)
Coins are stored as a buff with stacks (stacks up to 50)
Coins (stacks) are lost on loading screens and when entering or leaving a cross-realm phase
Usable on every continent
Usable while mounted without dismounting (ground
"Can only use outside"
Only usable where you have the ability to use flying mounts
(this also means you can't use it where you haven't earned the right to fly yet, e.g. Pandaria before level 90)
Not usable in dungeons or raids
Not usable in battlegrounds or arenas
Not usable on Isle of Thunder or Isle of Giants
Usable while in a vehicle, however it has no effect
Ground target circle has a 60 yard range
Can be chained while in midair
Can be used while using
to gain more height and glide longer distances + uphill
Resets jump height (can be used to prevent fall damage) however you will still take fall damage if you fall far enough after using
Jump angle is the same every time (~45 degrees) regardless of where the coin is thrown (i.e. cannot be used to jump directly upward)
Usable while on a flight path; propels the taxi a short distance, however it will quickly snap back to it's intended path and doesn't do anything other than look amusing
This would be very useful for a low-level character without the ability to fly in an area. The only requirement is that you are level 25 so you have a minor glyph slot available. (use
, get the disguise, then swap it out for
It turns out that the bag is not usable in areas where you cannot use flying mounts.
Is anyone aware of a hidden level requirement to use? I obtained this last night on my lvl 27 rogue, able to get coins, not indoors or in combat and it always gives me a "you can't use that here" error. *Edited* I've seen in other forums that you can't use it below lvl 60 because you need flying in a zone to be able to use it, can anyone confirm, any below lvl 60 rogues able to use it?
For those who may not know, this is a reference to the Mistborn Trilogy, which is a series of fantasy novels written by Brandon Sanderson. The whole "coin-pushing-you-back thing" is a reference to a type of magic in the novel called
Allomancy is one of the three magic systems in the Mistborn fantasy novel trilogy, and is the most prominent. People capable of Allomancy are known as Allomancers. Allomancers have the ability to "burn" (or use) metals, in order to fuel a variety of physical and mental enhancements and abilities. For an additional burst of power, they may flare, or burn their metal especially quickly, consuming it at an accelerated rate, but gaining greater benefits in return. A person who can only burn one metal is known as a Misting. If a person is born with the ability to burn more than one metal, they can burn all Allomantic metals, and are known as Mistborn.
(Cited from the Mistborn wiki's page on Allomancy.)
Basically, they use metals to power magics that range from physical to mental abilities/enhancements, etc. For example, some Allomancers in the book would carry
pouches of coins
for reasons such as using them to fuel kinetic Allomancy that propelled them over obstacles. One such character who did this in the book was
(which if you didn't know, is also spelled
backwards, who is coincidentally, a ghost that is part of a step towards getting this bag.) Kelsier also earned the title "
For a guide as to how to get the
, I would recommend looking in the comments below/above me, or
checking out WoWhead's latest guide to this item
which was posted a few days back after being discovered on
(World of) Reddit.
You can pickpocket mobs that have already had their pockets picked by someone else and get coins. That also means you can pickpocket the same mob twice for a second shot at coins. I racked up 50 in under 2 minutes from the Hillsbrad miners by picking from them twice with a mouseover macro.
If you have yet to read the Mistborn Trilogy and are a fan of fantasy books, you need to. The trilogy is among few that don't drag out or lose captivation, and the Allomancy science is so well developed and realistic I almost want to eat my change to try it. The capabilities, limits and physics are very well conceived for all the metals, as well as the abilities matched with the different pairings of metals.
That being said... I have to grumble the other applications of being a Coinshot (the nickname for a misting that can only burn steel) are not included lol... if we can push the coins to travel, why can't we use coins as weapons as well? Even if the ability granted was only usable on critters, I would have a blast!
Understandably, it would be pointless really, and a waste of time, I know. Yet the idea of putting some coins through critter faces is quite appealing..
Don't you judge me. You know you would.
Sadly, the stacks don't only disappear on a loading screen. I just got this, and after pickpocketing a bunch of kobolds in Elwynn Forest and getting a stack of 50 coins, I flew back into Stormwind, and the stack promptly vanished. I don't know if it has to do with it being a capital city, or if it interacts poorly with CRZs, but no bouncing around the city for me, it seems. :(
a very fun item great for confusing anyone who has never seen the coins in action and the coins persist through death, makes me wonder if the other classes have a neat little item like this one.
The Bag of Coins can be used during the mission Assassinate Creed, for the Fangs of the Father questline, since flight isn't actually disabled during the infiltration. Guards may detect you if you land directly on them but they can't see you whilst you're off the ground during a leap, so it's an effective way to cut the stealth section short if you know where you're going.
I recommend stocking up on coins from creatures in the region before starting, though.
This appears to have been nerfed in that you no longer maintain your stealth while using it. Before 5.3 you could jump while stealthed but this no longer seems to be the case.
I became Hagrid from Harry Potter by mounting on my motorcycle and using this item. Best thing ever.
Made a guide for any one needing a guide with more then just words.
I used information from various comments an such to make this. Along with my own investigation an words.
I hope it helps!
My rogue got it at 59, could not use it, leveled to 60 could not use it.
After training Flying he could not use it in Elwynn, but could in Outlands. After learning Eastern Kingdoms & Kalimdor Flying he was able to use it in Elwynn.
TLDR: Be 60 and able to fly in the zone you are currently in.
Wanna to surprise your friends or other players? This item is a good way to escape any fights in Duels or PvP, but can be used only by Rogues and only in outside world (not on bgs or dungeons). Can be used even on mount and in stealth. You can see how it works on this video:
I love this thing. Makes me wish I enjoyed playing a rogue enough to use it more. Great fun on pvp servers, use it for death from above or combine it with a vanish and a few jumps. If you haven't tried it, it is worth a few minutes to snag it. You can pretty much fly across zones as fast as a mount with it if you gather enough coins from pick pocketing :D
Subterfuge talent seems to allow Rogues to use these jumps without breaking stealth, enjoy ninja-jumping in MoP since Subterfuge will get revamped for WoD and won't have the 3 seconds of extra stealth time.
hear is to hopeing it works in Draenor
it is like a rogue with disengage on crack
if you get the timeing right you can use it to void out fall damage
With Warlords of Draenor, this item will be added to the account wide Toy Box. However, non-Rogue characters on your account will not be able to use it.
I wish it would charge simply by looting gold and be usable by any class, this is so much fun. Just imagine a Mage with this bag and
sailing through the air majestically. Like an eagle. Piloting a blimp.
: It didn't make it into the Toy Box, probably because of its class restriction.
If any of you non-rogues were thinking that, with a clever combination of
and a friendly rogue with
you might be able to get this (though you surely wouldn't be able to use it) put it out of your mind. As has been stated,
allows you to see
, but if you use your skymirror on your appropriately transformed rogue, he still tells you you look nothing like his master.
got it today first day patch not a toy yet
I highly suggest the safe fall glyph if you're playing around with this for hours like I do. I tend to run out of coins and go splat because I wasn't watching the buff since you DO take the fall damage if you're falling from high enough.
Also this thing is super handy for things like launching from the front door of Shrine of Two Moons up to the gear vendors to get to the bank. :P Or at least its more fun than flying up with a mount.
I've been trying to use this every once in a while in Draenor, with no success. Is this item permanently disabled in Draenor, or has some rogue had success in using it?
This sounds like not only a great new little play mechanic, but an invitation to read some really great books too! I'm very happy I stumbled onto this info today. I'll have to give the Mistborn trilogy a coin-shot!
Thanks Blizz for making these kinds of items that are nods to other good nerd food.
Thanks to everyone commenting for the info!
I'd dearly love to know how to actually /use/ the bag. I got coins in it... but then I had no idea how I was meant to throw a coin.
Seems to either be bugged, or has a new restriction added to it since 6.0. You're not able to use it unless you have artisan riding, previously you only needed the first flying skill you can learn at level 60.
With flying coming to Draenor in patch 6.2.x, Rogues will now be able to use this item in Draenor!
I just obtained this item. Hearthed, went back to Elwynn Forest to have abit of fun after looting coins. JK 'You can't use that here'. I am able to fly in this zone. I am level 70. I have used this item previously, as well as using it at level 70. Can someone tell me why this isn't working, idk if im stupid or somethings the matter
I'd just like to confirm that this IS now usable in Draenor if you have
. It is also usable in other areas where you can fly.
This gives you a stackable buff
, usually a few for each pickpocket.
When that buff is active, you can use
(right-click it, or put it on an action bar or macro). It gives you a targeting reticule, and you will throw a "coin" that direction, causing you to leap/fly away from that point. You can use it repeatedly to keep bouncing, once per stack of the "coin" buff - but be careful about going too high, and be careful about running out of coins!
Coin shot flying does not break stealth, so with practice, you can do some fun stealthy approaches.
I'm excited that this gives me another way to explore Draenor. I've leveled several 100s, and it's been getting stale. Most recently I leveled a druid, and was able to use flight form to snag all the treasures. The Bag of Coins will give another variation to play with, leaping onto and over the many terrain obstacles. But it will always be a temptation to just mount up and fly...
I did a test to see when the bag works. My first test I had flying with Expert riding and when I tried using the bag in Stormwind it said "You can't use that here". I then bought Artisan riding too see if it worked and it did. It seems that you must have at least Artisan Riding to use the bag.
The stacking buff
persisted after hearthing from Northrend to Frostwall Garrison. Intended or not, it's making the item a lot more enjoyable.
Just a note pickpocketing mobs in Tanaan Jungle does not seem to give you coin charges for using the bag.
Tbh I find it pretty lame that this can only be used in areas where you can fly. And with Artisan Riding, no less. Things like the goblin glider don't have that kind of restriction.
they removed the pandaria only on this IM SO HAPPY i flew from my garrision and almost made it to warspear on 50 coins
With the removal of Glyph of Detection in patch 7.0, and
being unobtainable, has this also become unobtainable?
, which teaches
So im pretty sure you cannot get this as of the legion prepatch because the took out detection glyph
Still no Toy. Cmon Mr. Blizzard
Pulling together the steps to get this item in Legion 7.0:
and apply to Pickpocket in your Spellbook
in Northrend Dalaran and buy
, 50 G
in Hllsbrad Foothills at /way 70.56, 50.74 and pick his pocket (closest flight path is Aerie Peak)
4. Go to Ravenholdt Manor in Hillsbrad Foothills at /way 70.69, 44.93, go downstairs and look under the stairs
5. Use your
and the ghost
will appear, talk to him and he will give you
*Edit: Thanks for the addition QuiescentD on 2017/09/30 (Patch 7.3.0)!
is also sold by the rogue order hall quartermaster Kelsey Steelspark.
As of 2016-08-21, this item is not a toy and occupies a bag slot.
You can talk to
without the disguise and he will tell you that you look nothing like his master and he will not give you the item.
For those that do not know. This can not be used in any legion areas as they have not even mentioned being able to fly ever in legion.
This item is usable while racing rams during Brewfest.
Getting a "you cannot use that here" error when trying to use the Bag while outdoors in Voldun. Going to assume that despite it not having a tooltip that says so, this is a Legion only item. Sad...
Missing the Detection book because you don't want to wait on some long respawn timer jerkoff? Do the Rogue class hall questline in Legion and once you have it unlocked, go find
instead. Always up and sells the book whenever you want.
Can you still get this in 8.2.5?
You can still get this item.
Apparently the stacking buff no longer disappears between loading screens, meaning you can farm stacks that carry over anywhere.
You can still get this item.
This is one of the most useful items in the game for world content. This is something that you should not only acquire, but practice with, as it will make you a world PvP god.
Bind it to shift+spacebar (or something similar) and use it to throw yourself towards any direction you want, stealth in the air and shadowstep to your target midair. I highly suggest go getting this item if you haven't already.
Does not currently in function in Shadowlands zones.
As of now the Coins will stay even after zone change, loading screens etc. :)
