A good blog by Sneakysams with a lot of great detail on
can be found here:
I've taken a look at the Alani lore and came up with a theory:
Alani was born when lightning hit the Whitepetal Lake. According to the loremaster telling the story of Alani, we will need to collect the lightning which shaped her in order to fight her.
I then decided to go fish in Whitepetal Lake and discovered something interesting: In some cases you do get a skill level (indicating you caught something) without actually receiving an item (indicating the item is still to be implemented, but already has a drop rate). Maybe this ''NYI item'' is the Skyshard?
I was doing a new quest that implemented in the latest beta build, and look what I got while looting one of the mobs:
Check my chat log and bags. Also check my minimap for my location. It's the area in the Vale of Eteranal Blossoms where a load of quillen hang around. These quillen are called Stone Guardian.
I'll be farming these now. :]
I can confirm that they actually drop, I looted one today from a mob in Vale.
I just uploaded a SS to this page, you can see who I'm looting it from in it.
Will be up in a max of 72 hours =]
According to someone on the beta that I know who currently is in possession of two skyshards, they drop from dailies- and regular mobs that are meant to be killed by a level 90. The shard is not zone-specific (one dropped from an elite hozen in the Vale, another from a trickster during a daily in the Valley (he said they were "tiny men" so I assume he means the trickster creatures). He continues to grind, and will let me know when and where he finds more.
All the info I come across is also in my blog which is linked in the first comment.
I looted one today from my
treasures of the vale
Alani the Stormborn is a level 92 rare spawn located flying around the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. He has a buff called
which makes him immune from being attacked. This buff is removed from an item called
which is created by combining 10x
Today I pretty much confirmed that Alani the Stormborn is infact the MoP version of the TLPD/Aeonaxx. After collecting 10x Skyshards I turned them into 1x Sky Crystal which allowed me to attack and kill Alani. When looted he dropped the
. My video of the kill can be found here:
Skyshards have a chance to drop from most, if not all, mobs in Vale of Eternal Blossoms and also from the loot bag obtained from the final quest of the Golden Lotus dailies. The drop rate from the mobs is exceptionally low whilst I believe the loot bag is slightly higher. I think my longest gap between drops was around 24 hours of grind time (over several days ofc) and shortest was about 4 hours - RNG can be a pain. I found the best mobs to grind were the 'Trickster' mobs. These can be found is a few locations in the vale but most notably around the north to northwestern area of the Vale (33,26) and in the southern Mistfall Village. They have low health in comparison to other level 90 mobs and a relatively short respawn (1-3 mins). There's quite a few of them also in places which means you can AoE them down together. Be aware though, that these trickster mobs will not spawn every day as their spawn is related to the dailies that are available on that particular day.
Here's a screenshot of a drop:
and here's a list of the 10 mobs which I looted skyshards from:
1 - Mogu in northern Vale
2 - Trickster in north west Vale
3 - Trickster in north west Vale
4 - Cow in south Vale
5 - Croc in central lake of Vale
6 - Trickster in south Vale
7 - Trickster in north west Vale
8 - Trickster in north west Vale
9 - Trickster in north west Vale
10 - Trickster in north west Vale
Hope this helps :)
Can someone confirm that this still drops from tricksters after the launch of mists?
To farm for the Skyshards, I'm not finding the "tricksters" anywhere in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. The NPC's are called Stonebark Trckster. I have searched the whole area and made a target macro. Nothing. Maybe they were taken out with live MoP? I have tried farming the wolves but they call in a whole pack to the rescue. As a new lvl 90 Hunter, this is just too much. I think I will just farm the stone guardians for now. Can anyone confirm the lack of these mobs?
These guys are not there.... I have done every single quest in the Vale (all the dalies)
Just had one of these drop from
during one of the Golden Lotus dailies. I've only killed about 25 altogether, so either I'm extremely lucky or the drop rates aren't as bad as people are making out. (Saying that I've also killed a ton of other mobs from other dailies / farming those tricksters, which I havn't managed to get a drop from might I add)
these are quite rare. ever since i reached lv90, i've been spending my queue time or other waiting times here killing mobs, or taking a few leisure trips every now and then to Windward Isle for the eggs, but I have seen 0 shards drop so far. I can honestly say after killing ~ 1000+ mobs, this isn't one to drop easy...
Just hit 90 today and on the 2nd set of dailies I killed 4 Paleblade mobs and 1 of these dropped.
Best thing to do is grind the dailies because apparently everything you kill here can drop them?
Was farming the thundermaw wolfs that are all around central lake and one droped today (they look just like Skull the spirit beast) I will be farming these now on:) I'm 87 hunter and can take on 3 at a time so farming is fast and they have a fast respawn1-2min You won't run out of them
EDIT i leveled to 90 killing these wolfs and have 4 shards now and no competators tryed the tricksters and when there up so many people farming on my server is a waste of time fighting over them
Got a shard from a fogwalker during the daily 39 - 43 area
Hey, just wanted to stop by and say that I can confirm that they can drop off of Granite Quilen's in the North Western area of the Vale. Had one drop while questing.
Hope this helps :D Happy farming!
there is a Pick you can use to find gems in deposits, do you think the Deposits have a chance of dropping this as well?
Does Anyone know if these drop of the Ancient Mogu Spirits in the souther Vale at the Tu Shen Burial ground? I haven't seen any tricksters around so they must not be on any current quests so the spirits are the easiest for me to kill right now as a rogue. They seem like they might not drop from them since they dont drop any normal stuff just ashes but at the same time im pretty sure the shards drop off everything in the zone. If anyone could figure this out or has gotten one that would be great to know! Im trying for server first alani so i dont want to waste time grinding anything that it wont drop
I've looted three shards from tricksters in the last day so they definitely still drop from them.
ATM i have 8 shards. It tooks about 45-50 hours of poor farming. All droped from tricksters at North West of Vale. Last shard i looted about 1hour ago so they still drop from tricksters.
Yes, i just farmed 10 of them and killed Alani. Свежеватель Душ, RU. Деаз.
- here is proof =)
P.S. All 10 i have farmed from Tricksters.
Requires The August Celestials - Exalted ..
A little unnecessary in my opinion, considering the grind just to get the mount.
You can get your rep up to honored with the Black Prince while farming this :)
I just got a Skyshard from Cracklefang in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Had to kill him for the Golden Lotus Daily
Just looted one of these from a
that dropped off of a Vale rare mob! (Major Nanners, though I doubt which rare it was matters since they are all eligible to drop the bag)
Definitely redoubling my rare farming efforts now.
Farming those shards quite effectively from shao-tien dudes in north-west area. Got 4 in 3 days + some keys
edit: who the $#%^ is downvoting every my comment
Killed alani today, got my mount im so happy! collected all 10 shards then combined them into the final fused shard needed to break alanis shield! submitted a ss! just want to say ty for all the comments and info wudnt of got it wifout this info! happy shard hunting!
Been farming the Tricksters in the North Western area 3 have dropped so far , dedication is key if youre trying to farm these items . Hope theyre worth the long hours of farm.
Best place is probably Mistfall Village when it's under attack by the Tricksters.
You only need to flag them after they lit themself on fire and have the debuff do the rest.
If you're ranged, find a nice spot where you have 7-8 spawns in range, and just stay there.
Took me about 5 hours to get my final 5 shards that way.
A nice extra is, that those guys seem to have an increased Droprate on Motes of Harmony :>
a good spot to farm is on top of the wall with the waves of klaxxi or w/e rushing the pandaren
no matter what % they are at, if you at least hit them once, you can loot them, they constantly come, and the pandas help kill them for you.
I've been farming these shards for almost 48 hours now and not one shard has dropped. Still going strong though.
The drop rate on these is EXTREMELY hit or miss. From my overall experience, 1 in 1,000 seems about right. I'm currently at 7/10, and what happened to me is rather interesting. I got my first 3 about 8 hours of kills apart, and then the other night I got 4 within 4 hours. Since then, I'm at another 18 hours of killing fruitless. I guess the best advice I could give at this point is to just not give up. I farmed all of mine from Stone Guardians in the small valley next to Ruins Of Guo-Lai. The reason being is that most people have at least done SOME quests in Vale, but I haven't started dailies or quests at all, so that I'm alone most of the time, since people who HAVE done quests are phased.
~Cormier, Whisperwind US Horde~
Been farming those things for over a week now, got the first 5 within 4 days of medium grinding of about 12 hours a day and since then....nothing. For the last 5 days not a single drop... been grinding everything in the vale, mogu, trickster, spiders, goats, cows. Killed at least 500 of every species yesterday just to make sure but still no 6th shard in sight.
Has blizzard changed the droprate of those? i get it that they want to make the mount hard to farm but this is ridiculous. At this rate it will take months even with every day grind.
I finished farming Skyshards last night on live and killed her. Using the Sky Crystal is a short channeled spell but she aggros almost immediately, and to be safe I would suggest that you kill her during a low population server time or not announce that you're bringing her down until you've already killed her. She
be tagged out from underneath you, apparently.
I pulled her down on a jutting hilltop just south of the Shrine of Two Moons, near the Mogu colossi. She doesn't have any knockbacks or special abilities of any kind and goes down very quickly. Bring a few friends you trust, though, just in case you attract an audience. Once you've looted her corpse, Alani despawns within a few minutes, so take your victory screenshots fast.
I killed her last night at approximately 12:30am server time and more than six hours later she has
yet respawned, so she seems to have a long respawn timer.
All told, getting this mount took me about a week and a half of farming 6-12 hours daily. I made 25k gold on loot drops alone (and that's after sending every single dropped green to the guild enchanter) and pulled out around 10-15 Spirits of Harmony a day. Now that I have her, I have about two and a half weeks of August Celestials dailies left before I'm actually able to ride her.

These do not drop when disenchanting or prying out the jewel from
Skyshard Ring (heroic)
Can I please just ask if these drops have been attained my anyone at less than level 90?
Due to my husband's near-ending deployment and romantic ideals of leveling to 90 together, I have capped my XP at 88 and been rapidly farming the only mobs phased to me; Precursors and Stone Guardians. Farmed a very good deal, about 8 hours, no drop. Not an entirely useless farm as it's yielded many many keys but I would be very interested to know!
Got one today in Mistfall Village doing the Sprite Plight quest. Looted it off the last one I killed, had never heard of it before this.
Have they nerfed the drop rate of the skyshards from the stonebark tricksters? I have killed 2602 tricksters without a single shard dropping. Anyone know?
I can confirm that the Stonebark Tricksters still have a relatively good drop rate. I got 2 Skyshards to drop within 8 hours, as well as about 150 Mote of Harmony, over 15 stacks of cloth, and many, many greens.
Also, no matter what the dailies are, there are many mobs of these tricksters at Ruins Rise at all times. They spawn very quickly, and have relatively low health.
You can only start getting these at lvl90. I have the addon, rarity, which didn't start tracking these till I hit lvl90.
I wasn't going to put this to post as I thought this was general knowledge (and I was the only one who didn't know this) until I noticed a guildie had wall jumped into the vale and slowly farmed his way from 86-90 in hope that he would have 10 shards by the time he hit lvl90... none dropped! It was only once he hit 90 they started to drop.... ouch!
So for the other Terry's out there wait till you're 90 to start farming lol.
EDIT: Don't bot the cow... that's just so lame lol
Just confirming that these can double drop. Was farming tricksters for a few hours and noticed my loot window. Skyshardx2.
Perhaps brand new information, I looted one on 10/22/2012 US Ner'zhul from a Mogu Archaeology Find in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Not from the sha mob that can spawn sometimes while prospecting, but from the regular old right click arch dig.
If you get to exalted with the golden lotus you will get this quest:
. After you kill a certain amount of mogu you will receive a buff called
(You need to click the link to see the full buff). If you stop killing mogu before you achieve the quest requirement and go to the famous instant respawn cow in mistfall village you can kill about 15 cows per minute. This would seem to be the best way to farm skyshards by far. I can confirm skyshards definitely drop this way.
The end result is I managed to get the 5 skyshards I needed in 4.5 hours along with about 1k gold from junk, 30 spirits of harmony and enough greens to make 20 ethereal shards.
What if you use it and you die? Do you lose it and have to collect 10 sky shards all over again?
Can anyone confirm that this still drops? Cause after i got 9 shards, its like a week that i am nonstop killing mobs and had not a single drop...
Any report of
drop from Fairlands Gazelle?
Talk about a crappy drop rate, this is like having to get a boss mount to drop ten times just for one mount.
this is where the rng from wow gets weird uh ? i play like 6 hours a day and never saw a drop of this onw, i have a friend that only play 2 hours a day and got 08/10 shards...
Or i have the badest luck in the world, or theres no RNG
For anyone else who had the idea to farm while on
The Might of Three
, I am assuming that Blizzard has either made Skyshards unable to drop while in that phase, or I just have terrible luck. Someone before mentioned the utility of the buff to help killing the cow - however, since that was hot-fixed, it's possible that the phase drop has been too.
I draw this hypothesis since I have killed over 2500 mobs with not a single drop of a Skyshard, and for me the drawbacks outweigh the benefits of possibly getting shards with low effort, because even if you abandon it, you are stuck in the phase until you finish the quest. Repercussions of this include:
While in this phase, you can no longer complete Golden Lotus dailies, thus removing the satchel as a possible drop.
Among the only mobs available for farming are Docile Porcupines, Fairlands Gazelle, the occasional goat, spiders in the Guo-Lai ruins, and Thundermaw. Thundermaw are really the only viable farming mob because they roam in packs, have a fairly quick respawn timer, and there are lots of them in a relatively small area; even then they are not ideal. Staple farming mobs such as the Tricksters are gone, and the NPCs you have to kill for the quest do not drop loot.
Everything in the capital city disappears, including all NPCs. (although the August Celestials quatermaster is also gone, you can still do AC dailies - you just need to either check all locations for quests or have someone tell you where the hub is)
You'd have to wait to get your epic quest reward until you get all the Skyshards, possibly making the reward useless.
Because of the ease of farming, it's possible that Blizzard will, if it has not already, removed the possibility for Skyshards to drop in the quest phase, meaning wasted time.
Edit: Why the downvotes? This is pertinent information that no one has posted almost anything on before.
A Complete guide to farming Skyshards and defeating Alani <the Stormborn> for
<the Stormborn> is a lvl 92 rare Dragon that is found flying around The Vale of Eternal Blossoms in Pandaria. Alani is MoP's Time-Lost Proto drake/Aeonaxx, but unlike them she is easily found. She does however, have a buff
that makes her immune to attack. The buff is removed with a
which is made by combining 10x
. Once killed she 100% drops the mount
. You will need to be exualted with The August Celestials, and have Cloud Serpent flying to use this mount.
rarity from curse.com
Name plates are very helpful.
Max bag space is needed
Skyshards have a low drop rate of about 1/1000. They can be found in
(from Golden Lotus Dalies),
(from rare spawns in the Vale) and looted from most lvl 90 mobs found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. There is also a chance to get shards from doing archaeology within the vale.
These shards will have to be farmed. During this farm grind you will get a ton of gold from greens, motes of harmony, and cloth. I also found a nice epic ring, and a few nice blues to sell. Best times to farm are early in the morning and late at night when others are not questing. Some days multiple shards will drop for you, other days you will get none. RNG based. The add on Rarity will help you track your drop rate.
The best mobs to farm are low health, and plentiful mobs. I farmed the "Sprites" or "Tricksters" found in the vale. They are of low health and respawn fairly quick. They can be found depending on the dailies from Golden Lotus. Slateskin Troublemakers are best to farm when Mistffall Village is on fire due to the dailies "My Town, It's on Fire!" and "Sprite Plight". During this daily the sprites run through the town kicking over buckets of fire. Once they do they get a DOT debuff "on fire!" which will slowly kill them. You can tag them and just wait for them to die. This is where name plates become very helpfull in targeting them. I picked a spot near the cow (at 33.34/72.68) so I could pull that too. While the cow no longer insta respawns, it still can drop shards, and will repspawn every minute. From here, you can easiy tag all 4 incoming sprites and the cow.
If this daily is not available, you can farm the Stonebark Tricksters at Ruins Rise (30.83/20.71). These are found in groups, and are easily AOE'd down. They respawn fairly quick. Go from group to group killing all near by sprites and repeat.
Also decent are the mantids on top on the wall at Gate of the Setting Sun. (7.00/44.62) They will continuously spawn and run into the room, and with the help of the Shado-Pan NPC's killing them, you just have to tag them and finish them off.
Killing Alani <the Stormborn>
As of 5.0.5 It is no longer possible for other players to tag Alani while the Sky Crystal is being channeled. Once you have all 10 Skyshards, you will right click to combine them into your Sky Crystal. Find a high up place to engage her. Group only with friends you trust as they will be able to loot the mount as well, making this mount able to be sold/given to others. Alani has a huge hit/loot box. Once you find a place to engage her, right clicking your crystal will remove the buff and start a cast bar draining about 20% health from her right from the start. This will consume your crystal. Alani will be drawn to you to DPS her down. Her only ability Lightining Breath does 4625 to 5375 Nature damage inflicted every 1 sec. This fight is very short, and a lvl 90 in Heroic dungeon blues should have no issues. Once dead loot your mount. Her corpse will despawn in less then a minute so take those SS quick! It took 4 hours for Alani to show back up after being killed.
Server first Alani killed 10/27/2012 around 1am at Ancestral Rise (18.72/23.13) on Grizzly Hills US.
As a lvl 90 BM Hunter, this grind took me 28 hours of farming over a three week duration. I got one shard every 4-5 hours of farming on average.
9/10 shards from Tricksters, 1 from Golden Lotus daily bag. 7k from vendoring greens,100 plus stacks of cloth, 70 plus Spirts of Harmony (motes x10), 4 blues, and one epic ring. There were times I could of sworn the droprate had been lowered, or that I had the worse luck in the world. And other times I would get back to back shards. But I didn't quit once I started farming for at least 3-4 hours. I sometimes skipped dailies and farmed all day. Keep at it!
Now for the rep to ride her. Sighhh.
~Laraven <slayer of TLPD, Aeonaxx, Poseidus and Alani the Stormborn>
I got one of these when looting the quest item for the daily quest
. Lets just say i was extremely surprised, didn't know it was possible to get it from there. Now i just need 9 more...
So.... Heres my story.
About 1 month ago I farmed all 10 shards and successfully fused a skycrystal. I proceeded to bring down alani with a friend nearby but sadly I was engaged in pvp and feared off a mountain to my death and was unable to receive the reins. I opened a ticket and the gm was unable to reward me with the reins, and suggested that I can farm again if I wish to receive the reins. At the time I didn't want to think about being in the vale anymore. My friend did receive the mount however by tagging and killing both the players that were engaged and alani.
About 1 week ago I received a random skyshard from a mob, and then decided I would slowly farm them as exalted rep is required with the the August Celestials to even learn the mount. I also opened a thread on the wow community fourms explaining what happened and was still unable to receive help.
Well folks, tonight I received my last shard and successfully fused another sky crystal.
I have yet to use it as I am unsure if I want to use it yet. Mostly farming tricksters in Mistfall village I was able to farm them rather quickly so to speak.
For those out there still farming don't give up, at times you will think they stopped dropping but they'll come with time and patience trust me.
Below is a slideshow including me fuseing first skyshard, encountering players in pvp during the fight and then falling to my death >.>, then lastly my final fusion of the skyshard tonight.
i've found the mantid on the gate of the setting sun to be the best place to farm them, i've averaged 1 shard every 350 kills for a total of 3 shards in less than 4 hours.
Edit: adding kills for each skyshard and registering 2 new drops
Skyshard 1: Treasures of the vale
Skyshard 2: 350 Mantids
Skyshard 3: 350 Mantids
Skyshard 4: 350 Mantids
Skyshard 5: 500 Mantids
Skyshard 6: 200 Mantids
Skyshard 7: 200 Tricksters (Mistvale Village)
Skyshard 8: 2000 Tricksters (Ruins Rise)
Skyshard 9: 300 Tricksters (Mistvale Village)
Skyshard 10: 200 Tricksters (Mistvale Village)
for a grand total of around 1750 Mantid and 2700 Trickster kills.
it seems that the Mantids no longer drops anything, except for gold.
this needs confirmation
Jvill Gnome Monk, Bladefist EU
I can confirm that you will loot this item also by killing the
Recently I decided it was time to farm these shards, I couldn't resist any longer xD.
About a week after I got the 2nd shard I decided I may as well start farming, my farming spots changed depending on what dailies were up. My most prefered were the days where the Mistfall Tricksters were on fire. The days when they weren't on fire was also just fine, there is a massive never ending supply of them up the top of the village which is great xD.
Unfortunately even the non-fire Tricksters aren't up every day, so I had a backup spot that I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere; I had stumbled across it last week while looking for a nice area to farm. Just nearby Mistfall Village is a small body of water ( Quid is some times here.) In the pond are 5 Silvery Carps - I found it great to just stand in the middle of the water and used ranged attacks to aggro them to my pet. What makes these great, is the fact that there is always at least 2+ fish up. There should be 5 there at the start, and once you start killing I usually had 3 up at a time.
The mobs I got my shards from were as follows:
3. Slateskin Troublemaker
7. Silvery Carp
8. Silvery Carp
9. Silvery Carp
10. Silvery Carp
I have to say..that the 10th shard was quite the nightmare, it was by far the longest one to get - I checked the 'Creatures Killed' section in Statistics after the 9th, and checked again after receiving the final one..totalled to roughly 2.5k mobs xD. It could have been a lot worse, but it wasn't too bad. The point where I started losing hope and thinking of taking a lunch break was when it dropped xD.
Overall it wasn't such a bad thing, when the farming began last weekend I got 3 on the first day, then 1 on the 2nd and none the next day. On day 4 I managed to pickup 2, then 1 the next, and 0 the following day. The final shard came the day after that- It's quite random that RNG xD, you might get heaps on some days, but then have days where you see none.
Anywho I'm beginning to ramble, hoping this is helpful ( mostly about the Silvery Carps) as I had yet to see that mentioned xD.
Just crunched the numbers... Looks to me like a 1 in 437.496 (repeating, of course) ratio off of the mobs that have a 0.2% drop chance. This means that, of the loot off of each individual 0.2% chance mob, about 0.002% of it has been a Skyshard.
To get ten, you would realistically need to kill about 3,000 - 5,000 mobs. My recommendation is power pulls, because(if you call it down the middle) if you want to kill 4,000 mobs, you can probably down 250 - 500 in 1.5 - 2.5 hours of pulling 4 - 8 mobs at a time.
Crunch the numbers all you want, it is a random drop there is NO guarantee on how many mobs you need to kill to get one or all 10.
I have farmed an average of 6 or 7 hours a day for over a month and I only have 3. You could kill 15,000 mobs and get nothing. Some people could take months doing nothing but farm them before getting all 10, and some people could get all 10 in a single day. It's really just luck.

After 3 years I decided continue farmind, I don't know how many mobs I killed today, but after 4 hours I get 24
my 10 skyshards:
3 from Shao-tien dudes (was farming for ancient guo-lao keys)
1 from daily bag
6 from Slateskin Troublemakers (nice way to farm as a mage is to kite em up there with nether tempest bomb. They fall over rly fast.
Well, i suppose it should be fairly faster for you to farm them from those tricksters at Mistfall Village, when of course they kick the braises, they should die fast and they do spawn very fast as well. i got 2 shards in less than an hour.
I hope that helps y'all. :)
So now upto 2 shards, this is taking a very long time. Got my second one from the tricksters after about a 1000~ kills or so.. Another 8 to go >.<
I guess I must have lowest RNG ever, been farming the slateskins and the stonebark for 2 days now and not a one has droped.
As somewhat of a pessimist, who has read about all the daily-dependant mobs that no longer drop Skyshards, I became increasingly nervous about the Slateskin Troublemakers that touch the braziers at Mistfall Village. However, as of November 11, 2012, I can confirm they still drop Skyshards.
This screenshot confirms it, and shows what is, in my opinion, one of the best spots to farm the Slateskins. Four spawn within range of this spot, at each brazier.
I believe they may have taken the skyshard drop off the loot table for the Stonebark Tricksters. I have been farming for the last 3 nights for 8 hours each night and no drop.
Unfortunately, they may have removed the drop from their table on the days they are used for dailies. No way to tell for sure unless one drops. I guess it's back to Mogu for me.
well, after a long and endless grind for the skyshards, my trip has almost come to an end. 9/10 with one more to go and so far this has been my experience:
from all the mobs i tried in the vale, i managed to get the shards only from the tricksters in Mistfall Village.
on my first day i got two crystals, on the 6th day i got one from the GL dailies goody bag, on the 15th day i got 4 (yes 4!) in about 6 hours of farming, on the 19th day (yesterday) i got one more, and im now on day 20 with still missing one crystal.
no luck yet.
Well after a long journey, today i finally got my 10th skyshard. I killed Alani right after i got my last skyshard and the mount is now sitting in my bag, the good news is i hit exalted tomorrow with the August Celestials and i will then get to ride this gorgeous mount :).
Here is a list of each mob that dropped a skyshard for me:
1) Mogu Statue

Happy farming guys!
The skyshards should be made BoA, instead of BoP. The reason for this is simple: Say you're farming Skyshards on your warrior main (like I am), and you have, say, four of them (like mine does). During the course of doing your dailies in the Vale on your alts you might get lucky (as I did) and get a Skyshard in your Treasures of the Vale on your death knight, and then the next day you might get a Skyshard off of a random mob on your death knight as well. You might also get two random Skyshard drops on your paladin alt while doing dailies in the Vale (like I did). So now I've got a grand total of 8 Skyshards among my three 90's, and if I've already got four on my main, I'm not going to farm them on my alts which only have two each, and so they go to waste. I've been extremely fortunate to get them, to be honest, because of how low the droprates are on them, and it seems stupid and pointless to have to just delete them, as difficult as they are to obtain. I'm not the only person with several characters at lvl 90, and it would make a lot more sense to be able to send them to a single character on one's account.
I had one drop from a Granite Quilan today.
I have looted 2 Skyshards in 2 hours by farming Slateskin Troublemakers during
Seems to be a quick way of farming (even though I don't really want to farm for another 8 hours).
i havent got one in 3 weeks doing dailies everyday and farming alot ugh stuck at 7 shards did they reduce drop percent again?
Just got my seventh tonight, all of them while hunting the Tricksters in Mistfall Village. It's been a pretty steady grind, having gotten either one or two each night when the GL questline runs through there. What else have you guys seen that has been dropping at a decent rate?
Either I'm insanely lucky or Blizzard gave the droprate of these items quite a boost since the last patch. In under 24 hours (with ample time for raiding, sleeping, etc -- in no way did I put any priority on farming nor did it consume my entire playtime while logged in) I was able to get 9 of the 10 shards needed to create a
(having had one previously before patch 5.1).
I farmed the same way as anyone else would, killing the
in Mistfall Village by parking next to the mailbox and throwing dots at all the imps within range as they spawned and kicked the brazier, letting them die from the fire debuff after tagging them. I was killing them at a pretty steady rate, 4-5 imps at a time every few seconds as they respawned almost instantly.
At first I was farming just to kill time waiting for raid invites to go out and waiting for a Sha of Anger raid to fill up, but I soon realized I was averaging a skyshard every hour or so, give or take, and was able to complete my
and thus obtain the
after just a few hours of easy, low pressure farming. Killing
afterwards was a joke, all she really does is spam a breath attack that hits for almost nothing and with only 1 million HP, she goes down fast.
I'm not sure if this is a fluke, but for anyone considering going for Alani's mount, you might want to try your luck now and see how it goes. Happy hunting! :)
Is it just me or has the droprate for these been nerfed?
I am exalted for two months now and while still doing the dailys from time to time I have only two of these.
And I got these two before I reached exalted.
In addition only one key after I reached exalted and never got a shard one from the treasure-chest.
Make these BoA for the love of god -.-
i just got 2 of these within approximately 5 minutes of each other from the slateskin troublemakers near mistfall village, apparently those are the guys to farm!
It is possible to get the Shard from the Vale of the Blossoms Treasure chest thing. I got my first shard out of one.
I have gotten 3 Skyshards today. 2 from Sprites and one from Treasure of the Vale box. (Have 7 right now.)
4 from Sprites
2 from Treasure of the vale boxes
1 from Fog guys
Got only 2... Fount them in Mogu Spirit.
Really hard to find these gems! So boring!
BoA in 5.2! Rejoice!
In 5.2 Patch these will be Bind on Account!
In patch 5.2 these became
(bind on Account) items.
Anyone want to give me some hope here?
Been doing this for a while now farming the imps and not seen anything drop, this is on top of the now honored status and climbing on two characters in this zone.
I totally get the time commitment but ATM I am starting to get that futile feeling (Different then a spawn camp because there your luck can change in a single instant)
Cheers all seasons greetings
These shards drop from GOATS.
Literally EVERY NPC in the vale has a chance of dropping them...whether it be in bags of loot or not. Just farm an area that has a high concentration of mobs and you'll get one. The tricksters and the mantid are just great examples of this theory. It is a low chance drop form ANY NPC in the vale.
Got 3 shards from 760 random mobkills around the vale. Seems to be averaging around 250 kills per shard, tho it can vary a LOT if you have luck, either bad or good.
I'll admit that I have never spend time grinding mobs down for the shards here, but I would at least think that doing the dailies all the way to Exalted would have turned up at least one skyshard. As it is I have yet to loot one or find it in a treasure bag.
I have 5 skyshards right now.
I have to say that i doubt the drop rate for AOE farm mobs (Tricksters). While farming, I noticed Rarity was only showing the number of times I looted intead of the number of Tricksters I killed. I was actually twice as many mobs as Rarity showed.
It made me think that wowhead's client was picking up incorrect drop rates too, so I installed it and compared it to Rarity and actual kills. It was slightly more accurate than Rarity, but it still only logged 1/2 the kills I made. I believe the drop rate for AOE mobs is about half what wowhead says it is because AOE looting hides the real number of kills. This will, of course, be true for any mobs, but it's very pronounced with the Tricksters. I believe the drop rate for Tricksters/Quest Mobs is actually 1/1000 while the drop rate for other mobs is about twice that. My three drops from Tricksters so far were 1800, 1700, 3000 kills. Rarity showed about half of the kills so it looked like 973, 858, and 1551 to the addon.
Tricksters are still great farming though since you can kill so many so quickly. Just be aware that the rarity number is inaccurate. The good news is that the wowhead number is just about as inaccurate as the rarity number.
One more thing. If you look at the Shao-Tien Fists, you will see two different NPC ID's listed with two different drop rates. That's adds to my believe that quest mobs drop these shards at half the rate as regular mobs.
Is there a confirmed drop rate? I have killed over a thousand mobs without one dropping, decided to do quests with some guildmates and of course one dropped on the 3rd mob (I lost the roll of course).
According to a fellow rogue on my server, you can loot them by pickpocketing. I have been farming by pickpocketing mobs in the Vale, but have not found any yet, so I cannot confirm. Maybe we can get a bunch of rogues to experiment, and confirm this.
guide i checked the daily hub of golden lotus dailies and it was not which need it to be.today it was and believe it or not i got my last 3 skyshards in 20min
If you're not in a massive rush to get this, the easiest way is to just do Golden Lotus Dailies. I'm taking a break from progression raiding this expansion so I need to cap valor; doing the dailies a few times a week will gradually get you the shards without the endless grinding. If you raid and capping VP is an afterthought, going for it on an alt using this method would work if you hate long grinds.
Just got one from
Supposedly the Stonebark Tricksters have the highest drop rate. i have the addon Killtrack the keeps track off total # of mobs killed. i have killed close to 4000 of these mobs and not even 1 has dropped. So for the .4% drop rate i call BS. Even asked the GM's if they were removed from the loot table and they were shocked that 1 hasnt dropped. I hate these damn things.
I have a question... My husband has been doing dailies in Pandaria for many months, all in order to get 10 skyshards and get the Red Ruby mount. He got the 9th skyshard about 5 days ago, and since then, has been playing for literally hours per day trying to get the 10th. We know that the tricksters have a 0.4 percent drop rate, so those are the mobs he's been focusing on. But even after killing literally 1000's per day, still no skyshard. Has anyone else had this happen? And if so, what did you do? Is there some trick or something to getting the 10th skyshard?
Due to the drop rate, I wouldn't recommend farming these. However, since MoP's release, I was lucky enough to collect a total of 10 of these on one character (the 10th was looted tonight at around 1:00am server from a crocolisk), and 2 more on another. Most of them were looted from killing mobs while doing Golden Lotus dailies.
From my experience, I looted at least 3 or 4 from the crocolisks in Whitepetal Lake, and at least 2 or 3 from the Sprites by Mistfall Village. If you wanted to farm them...the mobs I just mentioned are the ones I would recommend killing.
All of them were looted when I wasn't anticipating a drop, and it surprised me every time. I didn't farm them I understand that some people have only gotten 1-2 since MoP was released. My best advice would be do Golden Lotus dailies every day...whether you get one or not, you still get richer.
As for the extra 2 that I have, I'm going to hope I get 8 more, and then I will let my girlfriend loot it :)
This is truly becoming a test of dedication. Over grinding dailies with Golden Lotus, I was able to acquire 2 from drops and 1 with the Treasures of the Vale. Just recently started to farm these and I have to say it is difficult and requires total commitment. I received one from a Mogu 4 days ago, then I farmed for about 3-4 hours over the next few days and finally got another to drop last night from the tricksters in the ruins. Been farming all day today on them as well as over at Mistfall Village since the Golden Lotus daily is up where they burn themselves making them super easy to kill. No fruit for my efforts yet though so going to keep at it till I get at least one more tonight bringing my total to 6. I am kind of upset that the mount is not very unique looking as it requires a lot of effort to get. If you have August Celestials to exalted, then you'll notice you can get their mount. It is exactly the same as the mount from Alani except that it is orange in color.
Acording to my Addon Im at Attempt 1152 to get a Skyshard, and havent seen 1. This whole RNG system is broken, if u ask me. Not just with this, but also certain gear pieces, or mounts that just never drop.
i seen that Cloud Serpent and wondered why my attacks where not effective.
then wandering around i picked up one of these
near Mistfall Village of a Croc thats what brought me here. to find out what its for.
so after reading The highest rated comment then 5-6 of the Newest comments i See what its for
So We Have All Forgotten the Time Lost Proto Drake !
and the finger nail pulling agravation it is to get one
Wish there was a easier way to farm these.
Don´t get me wrong, i love grinds, but this is just too much...
Binds to account as of 5.2
Seems to me that the drop chance has been nerfed a little. I might be wrong so don't quote me on this:) but I got my very first about 2 weeks ago even tho I do all the dailies on all my alts in the vale every day and since then I already got 4 more. End quest chest give me 2 and quest mobs dropped the others.
Can anyone confirm that these still drop from Slateskin Troublemakers in 5.2? Killed well over 1500 of the buggers without seeing a drop and several others farming on my realm have had no luck with them either.
Less than an hour ago I farmed four of these in twenty minutes from Slateskin Troublemakers. Somebody was smiling down on me, because I have been farming these for four weeks now. I was stood in the middle of the huts near the mottled cow and just tagged them when they came past.
I now have the mount, and must say that it looks really good in shadow form.
Good Luck Farming!
i actually just got one from a zandarli mob in the treasue trove scenario.
I gotta say, the tricksters in the Mistfall Village are AWESOME.
Since launch, i've gotten hold of 5 shards from random stuff & mobs.
Now today, in an hour on these, 4 so far gotten and it seems that they are very quick spawns
I just had one of these drop for me off one of the Zandalari mobs inside the Thunder King Treasure single player scenario.
Either I am missing something or I must be the unluckiest feral kitty ever. I Just spent three and half hours on daily's farming Stonebark Tricksters. I sat in one spot and they spawned at a constant and steady rate of six per minute. That's 1260 of those little devils and not a single shard. At least the drops for this one was far better than the other daily's. Had to empty my bags 3 times from all the cloth, greens and motes, even recovered a fair amount of my gold back that i had to spend on repairs to armor from getting killed so often on the other daily's. Oh yea, that doesn't even take into consideration the last 5 days I spent farming all the other MoBs with the exact same results. Starting to feel it is not worth it.
The first 9 shards came relatively easy, coming across most by just doing dailies. This last 1 however, I have been grinding on the top 3 drop rate mobs, for a total of over 17 hours, and to no avail. I don't know if they nerfed it, or if I am just being extremely unlucky, but judging by the last couple of comments, maybe they nerfed it?
Finally got the 10th one, and as the comment above it was from the daily quest
. Only had to kill like 15 of them and it dropped.
Finally got my 10 shards! Only had two annoying spots where I would get two shards really quick then none for a long time, 7th shard took me 2656 kills and my 10th one took 3853 kills. All of my shards were from farming
in the Mistfall Village during the daily quest
I seem to have most of my luck with Skyshard drops from the Stonebark and Slateskin Tricksters. Not only do they have a 0.2% or 0.3% drop chance (which is pretty high up, trust me!), they also have a
higher spawn rate
than most mobs, they also have
. The Stonebarks are located at the Ruins of Guo-Lai and they are up most days, but there are fewer if the mogu are there that day. The Slateskins are located at Mistfall Village, and they are up seemingly fewer days than the Stonebarks. I have also noticed the high 7% - 8% drop chance on the Treasures of the Vale, which you obtain at the
end of the Golden Lotus daily quest line
, so I would definatly reccomend getting that! This really seems to work for me, because after a week of on and off farming of these Tricksters, I have already gotten 9 out of 10 of my skyshards. Good luck!
Just got my 10th skyshard today! Alani is a beaty! ^^
Been farming these guys for about 4 days and i've recived in total 4 skyshards, not sure if its just me but they seem to be the best one to farm for the shards since they got fast respawn time and lower health :)
Got my 10 shards and the mount in less than two weeks from the first shard from a Golden Lotus daily cache. Only farmed tricksters on the days they were up, and actually had a very nice droprate. I was never there for more than 1h per farming "session" and got at least one skyshard every time except one. Me and my friend got 4 shards in 60min, which was kind of crazy.
Does anyone know if it's possible to loot more Skyshards after looting the mount?
Got a Skyshard drop from a Shao-Tien Precurser after grinding for about 40 minutes. Take about 15 to 20 seconds per NPC to kill, so that's about 120 to 160 of them. They have a good respawn timer, so that you can have a constant supply of enemies to grind on, if you find a nice route, so to say.
I'm not sure if this has been stated yet or not, but these can still drop even if you have the mount.
Just finished collecting all 10 of these and following Alani around with the Sky Crystal on my tool bar for an easy click, and boy...was it worth it.
My kills were divided as follows:
6 Shards: Tricksters, bot Slateskin and Stonebark
4: The Mogu that will spawn in place of Stonebark Tricksters depending on the dailies.
The drop rate does indeed vary per individual; one of my guild mates reported only getting two in a week, one had 6 in a week, and I myself started out with 1-2 a day, then 4 a day yesterday and today. The hardest part over, I quickly found Alani and followed her around until I nabbed a ledge high enough to tag her with the Crystal. For an ilvl 506 BM hunter the fight was insanely easy, though my pet had difficulty toward the end being in range for me to use Kill Command. Also, despite having Growl turned on for farming purposes, Alani tended to focus on me.
I am happy to report that not only is the mount gorgeous and worth the grind , but alts with only Cloud Serpent riding can mount up on her! My druid has nothing to speak of rep wise, save for Order of the Cloud Serpent and the Tillers, and he's currently sitting on her outside of Shrine, happy as can be. Though, I don't know if you need August Celestial rep to learn the mount or not from my experience, as I waited for AC rep to hit Exalted before I finally began my grind.
Happy farming to those still seeking the mount, and try to put some music on or something, other wise you WILL go insane!
For those of you who think you have bad luck, I want you to reconsider how bad.
(1) I grinded my way to exalted with Golden Lotus with two characters and a shard never dropped from the Treasure of the Vale.
(2) Nor did a single shard drop from any of the 6500+ mobs I killed during these rep-grinds.
(3) Reports are the shards can drop from the bags you get from killing rares. I kill all the rares in-zone on average 3 times a day, getting at least 2 bags per day for 8 months and not one shard dropped.
(4) Reports are that the cow has a higher drop rate. I've killed the cow over 300 times and not a single shard dropped.
I grind these shards for at least 2 to 5 hours a day and so far in 8 months I've gotten 6 shards: 3 on my main and 3 on my alt (thank gawd they are boa). I have an estimated 60k kills to get those shards. So about 10,000 kills per shard.
The only way I keep my sanity is to see it as a gold-grind. I do the dailies even if I'm valor-capped for 19g to 24g each. I arm the Golden Fleece trinket and try to grind at least 400g from this a day killing sprites. I use Helpful Wikky's Whistle two to to three times (has a 2 hour cd) per grind for extra goodies. The bags I get from rares contain gold, ore, herbs and such. I vendor almost all the greens and greys, sell the cloth for 35g a stack (usually get 20 stacks per grind session). All told I pull in around 1000g a day from grinding these shards. And thats my focus.
The only thing I can report that might be useful is that every shard I've gotten has dropped while using a Potion of Luck. They don't drop in the chests, and the Potion supposedly has nothing to do with the drop chance, but nonetheless, thats the way its been. Each PoL costs me 50g to make (100g to buy) and returns around 400g in extra greens, motes, trillium ore and gold. When I use the PoL I average 1500g a day, but I have to fly to a mailbox repeatedly because my bags fill so fast. All but one of my shards have dropped from the sprites by Ruin's Rise. I've killed over 20k tricksters by Mistfall Village but nothing has dropped. The other shard came from a Mogu attacking Mistfall Village.
I used to think I was cursed but when I talk to other skyshard grinders in-zone they ALL report similar luck. So I'm thinking that it's time to recognize:
(1) Blizz nerfed the drop rate of skyshards after they made them BoA.
(2) They will never drop from the bags you get from rares, so don't bother.
(3) I've talked with 12 people who claim they haven't recieved a shard from the tricksters by Mistfall Village for MONTHS. Between us we have prolly killed 100k tricksters. It's hard to say, but Blizz may have made it so some mobs no longer drop the shards.
I'm just going to keep going. I buy stuff from the bmah using this gold, and have a seperate bank where I'm saving up for the 100k yak. If I see it like that, those rare shards that drop every 1.5 months (about one per 125 hours of grinding) are just gravy. By way of comparison, it took me 25k casts to catch my turtle mount (about a year) and I have several hundred accumulative hours grinding the Time-Lost Proto Drake (I've never seen it), and around 100 hours grinding the Camel figurine.
I've had good luck too. I just got Ashes of Alar after a year of grinding. I got several mounts in the past couple months on my first try, or close to it. So the RNG gods don't exactly hate me, they just want me to grind gold. Lots and lots and lots of gold.
Edit (7/11/2013): I just went 4 months of grinding between shard drops. That was doing the GL dailies twice a day with two toons, and sometimes you get two Treasures of the Vale per set of dailies. So I opened a ticket to ask why in a year of doing the dailies with over 500 Treasure bags dropped, I've never gotten a single shard even though the drop rate reported by wowhead is 7%. You might be interested in the answer. There is no bug and no nerf at play. What the gm told me was that wowhead stops parsing their data a few months after a new release, so their reported drop rates are always skewed. So whereas wowhead reports up to ".3%" dr (really .03%), the real drop rate for shards is substantially less than .01% and that includes the Treasures of the Vale. Or put another way, with over 500 treasure bags I should have over 35 shards. With over 20k collective kills in the Vale at a .03% drop rate, I should have between 200 (.01% dr) to 600 (.03% dr) more shards. So far I have 8 in a year of grinding. Basically what Blizz has told me is that's not bad rng luck on my part, it's bad data-mining by wowhead.
With the changes to entire zone coming in 5.4 will these even still be available after the patch hits ?
The entire golden lotus faction, quest hub and quest givers are all going away next patch.
I just looted Skyshard from last boss in Troves of the Thunder King scenario.
i just kill Portent and drop
The best way by far is AoE farming mogu/trickster's. On a bad day i can get 1 from farming all day. Best day so far was 4 shards in under an hour of farming. Yes, i know what your thinking this is bull#$%^, trust me its not. My angry guild can attest to this. I started farming these on Monday, by Tuesday i was at 8.... So don't let the drop rate scare you off. It just takes a lot of luck and persistence. Coming from someone who farmed the mount in under 3 days... So ya...
I've found The Golden Stair to be a great place to grind these shards out - so long as there aren't many people currently doing their dailies or also grinding in the area. I can comfortably pull groups of 5-15 Mogu at a time (on my Warlock) and there's always a large group spawned, ready to be grabbed.
I've looted 6 shards so far:
4 from the Mogu on The Golden Stair
1 from the Tricksters in a camp just west of The Golden Stair (East of Guo-Lai Halls)
1 from the Cache you receive at the end of Golden Lotus dailies.
I farmed all 10 in 11 hours on the Troublemakers as a 506 elem shaman. It was really easy to aggro a large part of the area just spamming my chain lightning, and had no problem with my hp as long as i used my healing totem.
I had some issues with several horde players but it was overall quiet fine, I got 9 shards in only 7 hours, I must have been quiet lucky there, but still with time you find the fastest and best ways to farm them. I got my 10th shard in 4 hours this morning on the same mobs.
Don't worry about people coming and starting farming, if you're on a pvp server attack them as soon as they land to kinda scare them (if your ilvl is higher of course), it worked almost everytime for me, and even though most of the time they're just people doing their quest and/or who won't stay more than 10 minutes because they get bored.
Sorry for my bad english, good luck farming !
Edit : after selling at the AH everything I earned killing them I made a total of 16k gold. Definitly worth farming.
I don't know why it isn't posted anywhere, but I can confirm that Skyshards drop off of rares in the Vale. I received one from Urgolax. When I search this drop rate for the rares, I do not see that Skyshards are even listed in the rares' loot tables. Any reason?
I spent a while reading comments here before I started farming myself so I though I'd add my data here also.
I had two Skyshards before I downloaded an addon called Rarity which counts the mob kills between Skyshard drops and here is the info:
1. 21 kills (I had killed loads and loads of mobs, then I downloaded the addon and immeadiate drop!)
2. 1157 kills
3. 503 kills
4. 238 kills
5. 608 kills
6. 291 kills
7. 435 kills
8. 373 kills
I didn't farm one exact spot since I didn't take this too seriously so I got them from many different mobs. Some dropped from tricksters in northeastern Vale, some came from the Mogu around the area and I even got one from a quest mob Bai-Jin the Butcher. Didn't get any from the daily quest bags, which I have also opened quite a lot.
All 8 of these were farmed in 5.3
Comparing my drops to other stories here in Wowhead, seems like I was pretty damn lucky or they have raised the drop chances.
Good luck to all of you trying to do this. :)
If you combine these you might be *puts on awesome shades* in for a shock
I've tried to buy the mount off trade for a few weeks now but in the end i just cant trust a random person to sell it to me and run off with my gold so i've decided to farm the shards myself.
I've done the golden lotus quests to exalted in the past and must of killed thousands of mobs and many rares but never found a shard before so expecting a long grind.
I am tracking my kills with rarity add on (all kills on tricksters, cords 30,21 or around that area)
1- 25 kills
2- 51 kills (76 overall kills)
3- 144 kills (220 overall kills)
4- 138 kills (358 overall kills)
5- 1301 kills (1659 overall kills)
6- 270 kills (1929 overall kills)
7- 19 kills (1948 overall kills)
8- 77 kills (2025 overall kills)
9- 1555 kills (3580 overall kills)
10- 1651 kills(5231 overall kills)
i got off to a very good start with a quick 4 drops.. i got 8 shards in just over 2000 kills which i thought was pretty good but then the last 2 little buggers took over 3200 kills alone.
it was a fun few days farming but i wont be doing it again any time soon.
happy sky shard hunting :D
I was in heroic Siege of Nuizao Temple and the healer DEed an item, I believe it was a green drop from trash, and received a sky shard. They didn't know what it was and told me it was the second this week they got from disenchanting.
In case anyone cares you can have a
saved and still loot more
Which i thought that's how it would be but didn't find the info on wowhead so i figured i would share the info.
I farmed Golden Lotus rep to exalted, doing all of the dailies every day. Even did them when I didn't need the rep anymore just for Valors and Gold. In all that time, I got 1 Skyshard. Back then I didn't know what it was for, so I saved it.
A few days ago I learned what it was for. I got my last 9 in 3 days. I pretty much just farmed a little camp of tricksters at 30,20 at the Ruins Rise (just above Ruins of Guo-Lai) in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
Day 1: Got #2 after 15 minutes. #3 after 6 more hours. Farmed for another hour, then went AFK for 3 hours. Got #4 after 5 minutes. Then 20 minutes later I got #5 and went to bed for the night.
Day 2: #6 came after about 30 minutes. 6 more hours later #7 dropped. After 2 hours more hours, I went to bed for the night.
Day 3: #8 came after 4 hours. 3 hours later got the #9. 45 minutes later, I got #10.
I used the crystal on Alani, killed him in less than 30 seconds with a 519 Arcane Mage.

- Mogu Effigy: 6 kills
Total time spent farming: 17 hours 19 minutes 24 seconds
I suggest you get KillTracker & Rarity to make your kill count & attempt count easier - it's also giving you some detailed statistics such as total time spent, time spent on X session etc. No matter what you do, don't give up - as you can see some skyshards can be a real pain in the ass, such as the #8 and #9 ones, but in the end it's worth it. I hope my post helped.
Farmed it as a 514 ilevel assassination rogue - thundermaws were dying pretty fast considering they have just 400k HP.
so here is my contribution for the skyshards farming :)
Skyshard #1 - 150 kills (had not the Rarity addon so more or less accurate)
Skyshard #2 - 41 kills
Skyshard #3 - 609 kills
Skyshard #4 - 803 kills
Skyshard #5 - 135 kills
Skyshard #6 - 1068 kills
Skyshard #7 - 370 kills
Skyshard #8 - 368 kills
Skyshard #9 - 314 kills
Skyshard #10 - 31 kills
the total kills are 3889 and it took me about 10 hours 13 mins on a 5 days span
farmed the skyshards to the ruins rise co-ords 34.24
mostly killed stonebark tricksters..those are a nice farm with their 236K HP pool and are about 23-26 in the area
some days the tricksters might not be available and mogu's might spawn in the area...their health pool is bigger about 500kish HP but they also count for the skyshard drops plus you can have Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Key drop i can confirm no key droped from tricksters but got like 6 from mogus
i also killed some of the nearby black bengal goats (cause i could:PP) and 5-6 of the rare urgolax!
would not suggest the mistfall vilage due to the fact that it's heavily farmed and that you can loot only 1 in 3-4 kills (nerfed or something)
no matter what you might hear in the game or read in
wowhead you have to understand one think...it just requires time...sure the drop rate
is low or extremely low in some cases (there are comments from users saying they got a
drop at more than 1600 kills) but it will eventualy drop
you ARE gona end up with THOUSANDS of kills..so take this into your advance
and if possible farm skyshards with a toon that has mining..i made a tone of ghost iron bars
and send them to my alchemist to transume into trilium
also do NOT forget potion of luck
even if the plundered treasure chests may contain no skyshards (yet to be confirmed by wowhead..i also
didn't see any) they usualy have MORE than 1 gold and in some cases greens/ores/herbs
at the end of the day you gona get
1)gold from tricksters
2)gold from chests (potion of luck!)
3)gold from ores/transumational triliums
4)gold from selling greens
5)gold for vendoring greys/cooking mats/cloth
6)gold from AH-ing blue twink 84-85 items
7)lesser charms of good fortune
8)mote of harmony->spirits of harmony
9) eventually a cool looking mount
*10) extra gold if you gona do that ALL over again to sell the mount :)
If you plan to farm the Mogu for
, it is helpful to get the Golden Lotus daily called
The Key To Success
. The quest objective is to "loot a Shao-Tien Cage Key and free 6 Golden Lotus Prisoners." The little Pandaren prisoners will follow you around and help you kill the Mogu. Whenever they vanish, just unlock a cage and set another one free. If you don't ever turn this quest in, you can keep this quest in your log and use it whenever you feel like farming the shards. Keep in mind that it is one of the last quests in the Golden Lotus daily questline, so it does give you 5 valor when you turn it in, but it is NOT a required turn-in to get the final quest in the chain
The Imperion Threat
Treasures of the Vale
and a small chance to drop a Skyshard. So you can keep this quest in your bag indefinitely.
Just an FYI for all the rogues out there...these CAN be pickpocketed from mobs that would ordinarily drop the shards. :)
Just a little tip... If you have 10
s in your bank and continue farming them you should turn them into a
s are Unique(10). I almost lost one because of that :P
I would love to know if anyone has a confirmed drop since 5.4 hit.
What Dudes & Where drop Skyshards now?
Why is it that it says that he can be found in the Vale and ALSO Arathi Basin? Is that a mistake?
Will these still drop if you already have the mount? I farmed 10 of them for the mount, created the crystal, got the mount. It's been 1688 kills since and I have yet to see another Skyshard.
This is just RNG, right? There is still a chance of it dropping even if you've already created a Sky Crystal and have the mount?
Hello fellow mount hunters! If you haven't gotten all your shards yet and are concerned you never will, take heart! Shards ARE still dropping in 5.4, even though the Vale has been rearranged and many mobs are gone or replaced.
Just looted my 9th from mogu in ruins rise, seems like the place to go for farming now. Mogu are everywhere and cache keys are dropping like candy. Last time I tried farming sprites in mistfall village only 1 in 4 dropped any kind of loot at all nevermind skyshards.
these drop in the "new" vale (had one drop off a rare/event mob a couple times during active N'Zoth assault) and Alani is there also.
P.S. don't make my idiotic mistake- while skyshards are BoA, the
itself is soulbound once created- make sure you send the shards to the character you will grab Alani with BEFORE creating the crystal ><
Hello,i can confirm that the skyshard are still obtainaible in 5.4,i obtain one of them yesterday =)
(sorry if my spelling/writing is bad,i'm french ^^')
I had 6 Skyshards already from back in 5.0, so I decided to try and farm the remaining 4. The route I took was a circle around the new mogu locations, killing about 80 mogu a round and about 900 an hour.
The drop counts are as follows.
Shard 7 - 758
Shard 8 - 951
Shard 9 - 1048
Shard 10 - 3856
Needless to say the last shard had me a little frustrated, but with a little perseverance anyone can get this mount.
Good luck fellow mount hunters!
Decided to grind this as i had a week off, had 2 from start of MOP so numbers for those are inaccurate as rarity didn't like aoe looting at start of xpac, but 3-10 were done over last 3 days.
number 11 drops after 13 kills.... was just going down to use all the mogu cache keys that dropped. (had over 300 keys grinding the last 8 shards)
also made roughly 25k from the grind.
Good luck everyone else getting theirs
I have tried every suggested method for farming these freaking things to no avail. I got one from my warlock a few weeks into the expansion (and that was with extensive playing with my main, and my main alt the lock). Since then I have spent months doing the dailies and other quests and have gotten a grand total of "not a single $%^&ing other one that the initial one". I honestly don't understand how ANYONE could EVER get 10 of these nigh non-existing mythic drops to take on the ever present dragon. I have yet to see ANYONE take it on, much less have the mount. I can only conclude it's another "%^&* YOU" from Blizzard.
Had 2 for like 1 year in my inventory ...so i decided to gather the other 8..
3 : 222
4 : 41
But the problem is number 9 wont show up...im already at 3k kills... is it a bug or something.. maybe i have 2 shards on my alts and thats why it wont drop..i dont get it...
My question is..will the shard still drop if i have 10 in my invetory already? but i wont be able to loot them?
Gave this a shot other day, I had 3 shards on my rogue 1 on my shaman.
If you're going to grind these, I recommended and I am sure others have suggested. Ruins Rise. After about 9-10 hrs of grinding
6 sky shards
30 + keys
20 + stacks of ore, wool, herbs, leather, spirit of Harmonies, spirit dust/a few sha crystals from treasure of vale i got while opening chest with keys
countless greens vended
Ive been trying to get ONE skyshard for the last year and a half. Not a single drop. TONS of everything else tho. When will Blizz modify their obviously busted RNG? I'm not sure whats more frustrating.. This or trying to camp TLPD/Aeonaxx with CRZ.. Either way, I guess i'm going to be here till i'm a gray old man..
after some extensive searching, i cannot find any confirmed drops since patch 5.4. So i will update here. In the last 4 weeks my son has gotten 2
in gun-lai halls, and I got our last shard today from the shao-tien in winterbough glade just west of center of the map of vale of eternal blossoms. I do not know exactly which type dropped them as we just farmed them all. In winterbough there is roughly 30-40 shao-tien in the area, and by time i was able to pull and kill them all they were respawning. Using a potion of luck while doing this will help ease the feeling of wasting time if you dont get a shard drop on a particular trip. The potions will not increase you drop chances, they just add extra loot that can be sold or used for crafting, as well as some extra gold. We will be pulling alani shortly for our mount. Good luck to all who still want/need the mount, hope this helps.
I have collected 7 of these until today when my eighth and ninth shards dropped within 10 minutes of farming from a mogu in the Ruin's Rise and a Thundermaw wolf. Not sure if it's just extremely good luck but I normally farm a little less than an hour each day and when one drops, I make sure to skip a day or two, even three, before I go back to farm the mogus again.
Incidentally, however, I tried to do the same thing today when another shard dropped off of one of the Shao-tien mogus and decided to farm leather from the Thundermaw wolves instead. And as luck would have it, another one dropped.
I had 2 Skyshards since beginning of MoP and decided to farm the rest, so i started three days ago and i had a easy flow from shard 3 to 7. The 8 one however took me more than a day, same goes for the 10 one.
All i can say is that if you keep it up they will drop eventually, and hey, atleast i made over 40k gold from it :P
I just wanted to share my experience. The last shard dropped a few minutes ago. I used the Rarity Add-On for the last 5 shards, so I wont give any detail about the first 5 (Any given numbers would be guessed, so this would be bad).
#6 - 962 Kills
#7 - 35 Kills
#8 - 756 Kills
#9 - 569 Kills
#10 - 1926 Kills
The last one was really painful.
Where did I do this ? Winterbough Glade - The place with the tents, where you encounter A LOT of Thundermaws, Shao-Tien Conqueror and Shao-Tien Painweaver. You can circle around these tents and kill them within seconds. (I am a Sub Rogue ilvl 547.) The respawn timers are great, competition, at least on my server, was only on evenings. I also made something like 30k Gold~ (depends on the prices on your AH) with selling the items I got from the boxes in Guo-Lai Halls. Everytime I had 10 keys (you really get A LOT of keys) I mounted and flew to the halls, opening all boxes and selling those items on the AH.
Lots of experiences being shared which is great for practical ideas of the effort required, and here's the probability calcs based on 0.2% drop rate of the crystals.
Getting the 10 shards from 500 kills: 0.00001%
Getting the 10 shards from 1,000 kills: 0.0045%
... from 2,000 kills: 0.807%
... from 3,000 kills: 8.27%
... from 4,000 kills: 28.32%
... from 5,000 kills: 54.22%
So, after being away from WoW for a while, I realised I had 6
from just doing old Golden Lotus dailies. So I thought, why not get the mount anyway.
Since last time I played wow, Vale has been changed and the Golden Lotus dailies as been removed(not those at Setting Sun Garrison). With these dailies removed, they have replaced the old
do not contain shards at all. So the only way to get
these days is by killing mobs.
So I ended up killing Shao-Tien Conqueror and Shao-Tien Painweavers at Winterbough Glade, since these seemed to have the highest droprate atm. After about 2k of them killed I had 4. So +/- 500 kills per shard.
My advise is to bring
, this will not increase the chance for
to drop, but let you loot
, which gives you gold and crafting mats.
The mobs also drops
which can be used inside the Guo-Lai Halls.
By doing this you can make a decent amount of gold while farming for your mount.
Hope this is helpful for you guys.
I started my grind yesterday and I can completely agree with how RNG this is. I am pushing on 3k kills and got my first shard at ~600 kills, it took me another 1500 I get my second shard, and then 78 kills later I get my third!
My strategy has been to pull the mobs in groups at Winterbough Glades and pick up the traveling thundermaw wolf packs. If you keep a ton of potions of luck on you and go to the chests every ten ancient keys you will make a ridiculous amount of money. I have made back over 8k gold since starting and if I had enchanting I could make much more off all the green drops.
My suggested profs for this grind would be skinning( wolves) am enchanting (disenchants). But having mining is also good due to all the ore you'll receive.
This grind is mind numbing so prepare for the long haul. Some of you will be unlucky like me and have gone through 3k kills and only have 3 shards to show for it.
I'm not sure where everyone is farming these to take so many kills but I started the grind today. I had 2 when I started. I farmed Conquerers and Painweavers, grabbing wolf packs anytime they ran through.
It took me about 5 1/2 hours to farm 8 Skyshards. Most were roughly 300-350 kills to drop. A couple took about 100. My 9th shard took 507 kills. 10th dropped 57 kills later.
All and all it wasn't a bad grind, at least not what I thought it was going to be. I highly recommend using potion of luck. I did this on my engineer and kept mailing everything to my bank alt. All in all I looted over 2500 gold, sold more than 20 stacks of cloth, 6 stack of white and black trillium each, 12 stacks of ghost iron, about 15 stacks of leather, and I had 32 cache keys as well. I don't even know how many stacks of spirit dust, and essences I got out of all of the greens. It filled 2 bank tabs in my guild bank before I could DE it all. So quite a profitable little farm honestly.
So like many people apparently, I had collected a few of these (4) just by doing dailies on several characters over a long period of time, so I decided to try my luck farming these for real.
I farmed most of them on an ilvl 522 destro lock who was able to mow down 10-20 mogu at a time with ease*, (though CDs were commonly needed when 1 or more packs of thundermaw got into the mix as that lightning attack they do can hurt.) I initially farmed at Ruins Rise so I could use the
that spawn on the walls in the area, but I seemed to be having terrible luck there and I noticed that people commenting here with good luck seemed to be farming at Winterbough Glade, so after killing ~3,000 mogu there I switched to the glade where my luck got better.
*I could probably have taken on all of Winterbough Glade at once, however, the mogu reset pretty easily, making it impossible to pull the whole glade at once.
Here are my stats from Rarity:
#1: 127 attempts
#2: 2,449 attempts
#3: 2,332 attempts**
#4: 341 attempts
#5: 1,235 attempts
#6: 622 attempts
Total attempts: 7,007***
Average attempts per shard: 1,167.83
**I stopped farming at Ruins Rise somewhere during this batch.
***Rarity was counting
as attempts and was frequently (but not always for whatever reason) counting both
, none of which are reported to contain
s, therefore I would estimate that as many as 200 of my attempts are false reports.
Rarity reports that it took me 7:52 hours, however, based on the 30
I used, I spent at least 10 hours farming (20 min duration x 30 uses). I made roughly 25k gold, (my lock is a tailor so I was able to get more cloth than the average farmer as well as use it to make bolts, which sell for more than the raw cloth on my server.) I should also add that I found 4 different boe level 85 twink blues.
Conclusion: It would seem that the Shao-Tien Conquerors and Painweavers at Winterbough Glade have the best drop rate, (wowhead reports them having a 0.4% unlike other mogu who have a 0.3% chance.) My data cannot prove this 100%, but hopefully it helps give some hope to those you out there farming that your
s will drop eventually. Good luck!
I had 7 crystals from the beginning of the expansion after doing tons of Golden Lotus dailies on 3 of my characters (maxing out all 3 to Exalted by doing the dailies). Then I stopped and just recently began to farm for the last 3 so I could get the mount before the new expansion hits.
I agree with other commentators in that the best place I found to farm them was Winterbough Glade (huge mogu camp north of Mistfall village). Just circle around the camp and by the time you do 1 lap they will have already re-spawned. As a rogue just have recuperate on and since they die so quickly I never had to worry about pulling too many as my health was always topped up (I'm also 550ilvl which helps). I ended up getting 3 Skyshards in 3 days with only 20 min - 1 hour of farming per day.
You will also get a ton of cloth, greens, lockboxes, and Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Keys. I also recommend using a Potion of Luck, you'll get tons of treasures with extra goodies and helps you keep track of farming time as potion only lasts 20min. Good luck!
Can anyone confirm if these drop off the Timeless Isle or off the Isle of Thunder?
For all the people trying to obtain these after patch 5.4
After killing 5k+ mogu in the vale
Opening 200+ Treasures of the vale
Opening 100+ Ancient Guo-lai cache's
Skyshards can only be looted from random mobs in the vale now.
They cannot be looted from chests, treasures of the vale, or guo-lai caches.
This is no match for us who have farmed shinies in Pokémon, I'll get to it immediately!
I don't get these crystals.
I've been farming now for almost a week, at 8/10 crystals.
At least 3 times, I've gotten a shard DIRECTLY after I've taken a break. I take a break, clear my bag, send stuff to alt, go back to farming spot and I get a shard within the first 5 pulls.
Anyhow, I've found the spot with the conquerors the best. I've gotten about 4-5 shards there, rest has been at other places. But this spot has been the most frequent. The area is also very dense and if you like me have a Blood DK you can pull around 10-15 mobs at a time and AoE them down.
I like the idea of working toward a solid goal: kill, get object(s), get mount. The RNG however can be really disheartening.
At the beginning of Mists I got a Skyshard from the original end daily for Golden Lotus. I farmed a few times, halfheartedly, and didn't get another one for well over a year.
I killed many Mogu over the course of many hours before I got a shard. I focused on the Painweavers/Conquerers because they supposedly have a higher drop rate. meh.
Spending so much time on it prompted me to get the Rarity addon so I could objectively track my self inflicted misery. I recommend it to anyone doing large scale farming like this. It will let you know when you are participating in a probabilistic novelty and allow you to appreciate the specialness of farming 1800 Mogu without a shard dropping!
Anyway, I suggest not worrying about the particular Mogu you farm and just find a solid spot that you can circuit comfortably...over and over...pulling multiple mobs without dying.
After this grind you will have lots and lots of crafting mats and a nice gold boost so it's actually a good use of game time. Have fun!
My stats for shards after the first two:
8 1752 (ouch)
Yeah. I'm currently at 3452 kills without a shard drop. I currently have 2 shards. I've killed everything in the Vale over and over. I've been farming on and off since I hit back when MoP came out. And I have 2. I loot the chests, I kill the wolves, the mogu, the sprites when they existed, the sha, the rares...and nothing. I'm starting to wonder what the heck is up.
Guildies claim the mogu have the best drop rates - 2 guildies finished their shard hunt within a few days. I'm on day 4 of serious farming and have made several thousand gold, restocked my guild's bank, resupplied my main and still nothing. I am kind of wondering if the drop rates were severely nerfed.
Today, I just received one while doing the Thunder King solo scenario. I believe I looted it from a golden treasure chest, but it may have been from God-Hulk Gulkan, so it may indeed drop additionally from mobs just in the Vale still as of 5.4.2.
I can confirm that these drop in 5.4. I farm the mogu in vale of eternal blossoms with
, within the period of 3
(1 Hour) I received 3
! I'm either extremely lucky or the drop chance has improved?
Anyways, to make the grind easier have a goal other then skyshards to make it easier for yourself. Best of luck.
Congrats to VuuYou,
I started farming Stonebark tricksters last April and after about 8 months I only had 6. After the patch that nerfed them I killed Mogu for about another month with no luck so I finally gave up. Then about a month ago I accidentally stumbled across 2 more in the Ruins of Guo-Lai and my interest was renewed.
I checked here and saw others were having luck with potions of luck in Winterbough Glade, so I installed Rarity to keep track of my kills and with my 1st potion of luck and 77 kills I got Number 9 and i thought, Oh boy, this is going to be easy. That was 9 hours and 36 minutes,1500 kills, and nearly 30 potions of luck ago.
Thankful for all the motes of harmony that allowed me to make my own potions or i would have gone broke buying them. As a lone feral cat this is an unbelievable amount of work and definately not worth the trouble, but how can i quit now after investing so much time and effort. Oh yea, and being called unlucky by rarity doesn't help. Yet I continue to carry on, but if number 10 ever comes I promise I WILL NEVER KILL ANOTHER MOGU.
At last no more Mogu.
Finally got number 10 in the ruins...after number 9 it only took 1973 kills and 13 hours and 59 minutes . One happy cat here. Hmm, now what? been farming these for so long i don't know what to do next. Knowing my luck Alani will kill me and I'll have to start over. Come to think of it another Cloud serpent mount is not much of a reward for all the work involved.
Since Vale of Eternal Blossoms has completely changed, farming skyshards from Tricksters are no longer a possibility. However, the skyshards are now bound to account, which gives the opportunity to farm on different characters, maybe while working on getting exalted with the Golden Lotus.
Anyway, I decided to try and get the 10 Skyshards needed to create the Sky Crystal that removes the Nimbus Shroud surrounding and protecting Alani from attacks.
I got my first skyshard from the first mob i killed, a Mogu. I thought "Hey, it drops from my first kill, maybe Blizzard decided to change the drop rate for the better!" ..... Oh, was I wrong.
The second one dropped from a Mogu aswell. Basically I farmed the Mogu-area just south of Ruins of Guo-Lai, which also gave me the opportunity to kill pathcrossing wolf-packs and therefore to obtain exotic leather.
Multi-loot kinda ruined my count of which mobs would be more likely to drop the shards, but my guess would be that 8 shards came from Mogus, and 2 from wolf-packs. No rares, nor chests or treasures dropped skyshards at any time.
The 3rd. skyshard was hell. I almost gave up, but it was a good moneygrind anyway, so I decided to continue. The 5th. and 6th. shard dropped in a very short period of time, first the 5th. on my server, and then I got invited to a party which tranferred me to another server where the 6th. dropped.
Nr.7 and 8. dropped in a short period of time aswell, and same goes for the 9th. and 10th.
My theory became that if one shard drops, farm for another 1-2 hours, and the chances of another shard dropping will increase. I have no idea if there's any truth to that, but my theori kept me going, and today I was able to create the Sky Crystal.
On another note: It certainly helps if you look at this as more of a ... moneygrind. You will make loads and loads of money, its insane. If you buy or make potion of luck, make sure to use it when farming for the shards. It will fill your bags with chests containing all sorts of stuff and gold.
My guess would be that I made around 30k gold in total, only looking for skyshards. I spended aprox. 3 weeks getting 10 skyshards, that includes days without no farming at all. The hours I spended on farming pr. day never exceeded 3 hours.
Good luck and good grinding!
PS. And yes, you will be like "OMG! OMG! OMG!" every goddamn single time a skyshard drops, purple is a very pretty colour :)
At the beginning of Mists I got 2 Skyshards from the Golden Lotus dailies. I tried to farm more a few times, halfheartedly, and didn't get another one. 2 weeks ago, I started in earnest and farmed non-stop for about 4 hours a day, just killing Mogu in the Vale. I found a good circuit, killing roughly 200 of them per hour (as a very well geared Mistweaver).
After the first 2 hours without a shard, I installed the Rarity addon so I could track the number of mogus I had to slaughter more effectively.
These are the killing stats:
3rd: 4378 (after (!) getting the Rarity addon)
I farmed the whole time with a
, which gives a (good) chance to receive
. All in all, the grind yielded me 195
, literally a ton of enchanting mats from the greens, dozens of stacks of cloth, ore, herbs and leather plus roughly 40k gold from the vendor trash and gold drops.
After selling everything, I'm about 80k and a mount richer, but about 40 hours of my life poorer. It helps if you look at this as more of a gold grind than a grind for a mount.
Now far from me using this post to moan about the poor drop rate, i simply want to know if they are still in existence, or have i been immensely unlucky?
I have farmed over 1200 mobs in Vale, specifically where people have mentioned the best drop rates. I got a random drop yesterday, researched on here what it was, where it was i should go, and spent all day with no luck of another one.
Rarety confirmed my kill rate... so what am i doing wrong... i've even spent 1.5k on potions on luck... is it me?
Great place to farm these is in the Ruins of Guo Lai, just to the west on Kun-Lai Summit. The spawn rate is Fast and there's plenty of mobs in there. But even with a lot of Mobs this is gonna take time. I already had two Shards from random's in my bag through normal play. But here's my numbers while grinding the rest.
3rd - 1000 Kills
4th - 1347 Kills
5th - 3332 Kills
6th - 4259 Kills
7th - 6255 Kills
8th - 6408 Kills
9th - 6530 Kills
10th - 8732 Kills
Will these still drop if you already have the mount? I'm on Day 5 of ~4 hour farming rounds and nothing thus far.
Edit: Yes, they will. I finally got one to drop. Apparently I haven't sacrificed enough to RNGeezus lately and he's just not happy with me.
I'm my experience, found the best place to farm them is to farm the Mogu around and INSIDE the Ruins of Guo-Lai who also drop
You can use these to open chests inside the Ruins of Guo Lai. On my last day of farming which was on 02/17/2014 3 dropped throughout the entire day of farming! between treasures of the vale and mobs! FACT! don't be jealous and downrate.
If you get lucky, opening the chests can and will drop the
which can contain the skyshards.
Last but not least I farmed the last shard from the Mogu over in Autumshade Ridge, due west from Guo-Lai area at around 14.2, 36.9
Jenelia - Ysera USA.
The shards are really not as rare as you would think if you just sit there and grind the Mogus in and around Guo Lai Halls for a few hours at a time (personally I fly around outside the Halls). It's reasonable to expect to kill ~400 Mogus an hour (especially if competition is low) since they are packed so tight and respawn so quickly. Based on my experience of having farmed and the mount six times over, I'd guess the droprate is probably a little bit better than 1 in 1000.
I usually track how long I've been farming by my total damage dealt on the meter, and I reset it anew each time I hearth back to empty my bags. Usually a good 2-3 hour farm session will yield +/- one billion damage dealt. Assuming half a million health each, this is about 2000 Mogus slaughtered.
Anyway, I usually average 1-2 skyshards per billion-ish damage dealt. Sometimes I will get fewer and go long streaks without a shard. Sometimes I will get lucky and even get shards on consecutive pulls. Just now, I completed a ~900 mill farm session with three shards in my bag. Last night, I completed a similar session with a whopping SIX shards in my bag (very lucky).
RNG is RNG. Good luck.
Also, it IS possible to get a Skyshard from a Treasures of the Vale, but I've opened literally like a thousand of them and it has personally never happened to me. I would guess the droprate from Treasures of the Vale is similar to 1/1000 or 1/500 or whatever.
Do these drop off the sha type mobs in the vale?
I got my 10th Sky Shard today and then went on to get the kill for the mount.
I'd had two in my bags for ages and decided to farm for the mount. I have an achievement tracker and after over 2500 kills hadn't dropped another Sky Shard and though that perhaps with the destruction of the Vale, they weren't dropping anymore.
I actually raised a ticket and the GM confirmed that the drop was working as it was supposed to and after another 1500 kills, one dropped! That was about 4000 kills for one Sky Shard :(
I used potion of luck, farmed like mad around Guo Lai using my Warlock, the AOE for Destro made it a fast farm. With the keys that drop for Guo Lai and using the potions, there was loads of gold, greens to vendor and plenty of rep tokens from running through Guo Lai Halls when I had enough keys.
The shortest interval I had between two Sky Shards dropping was 68. The most was the first drop of around 4000. From Sky Shard 9 to number 10 took about 1700. In total I had about 11,500 kills.....a lot of farming!
Now it's onto dinosaur bones for the other mount....only 5800 to go!
In all the thousands of creatures I've killed in Pandaria I've had exactly one Skyshard drop.
Patch 5.4.0 - Comprehensive Skyshard farming guide for the Siege of Orgrimmar and above
So. With 5.4.0, the Vale sort of went to s**t and as a result many prime farming spots were lost for Skyshards, as well as the fear that they may become even less obtainable due to the destruction of a large portion of land and the loss of mobs.
So lets get the basics out of the way.
Yes, Skyshards still drop.
No, I don't believe the new Sha in the zone drop them.
Yes, there will be a lot of competition.
What a freaking ordeal. The first 4 were pre 5.4.0, the others grinded in Winterbough glade over a period of 36 hours in 4 hour sessions.
1) Treasures of the Vale
2) Stonebark Trickster
4) Thundermaw (Two dropped in the same pack and were AoE looted. Maybe a mob can drop 2, maybe not. Such luck has never been observed before)
10) Thundermaw (Final shard. 02/03/2014 at 17:53)
There are two primary farming spots and on a heavily populated server they will be -extremely- popular, so be prepared to move on or wait for them to pass through on their own accord. These areas are:
My spot of choice. Quick respawns on Painweavers and Conquerors and plenty of passing Thundermaws make for ideal farming, especially if you're an AoE capable class. Large and openspaced with numerous Mogu clumped in groups of 5-6. This is where I farmed 6 of my 10 shards.
GuoLai ruins and Halls.
Not...Too bad? If we're talking about the actual halls, there's more of a run between groups than at Winterbough and numerous rooms. The Mogu here seem to have a slowerr respawn timer than at Winterbough, especially in the halls themselves, and the ruins around the halls are no different. I'd recommend coming here just for a change of scenery or if competition at the glade gets too intense.
Either way, if you can choose Winterbough, do so. But with the presence of too many people (Two people alongside yourself is too many.) go to the halls and clear them on a room by room basis.
If you can AoE pull, do so. They'll respawn in no time whatsoever, however be wary that the Conqueror leash is quite small, and they have a horrible tendency to reset after their leap ability and run all the way back to where they were. The Painweavers will also stand on the spot and channel Torture Mind, leaving them stationary. Interupt if you can but don't worry if not as at higher gear levels (Anything above 500) it does barely anything. Finally, when you have them AoEable, don't stand still as both mobs will summon a pool on the floor that, while neglible at one pool, deals nasty damage when stacked up by many mobs.
To give you a brief idea of how many kills you may have to make, I'll put it into context.
It took me near enough exactly 36 hours.
I'd kill roughly 7 Mogu per minute, pulling them all into Lights Hammer. You can probably do better.
So per hour, I kill 420 mogu as a rough estimate, not accounting for other farmers, afk breaks, etc.
I did this in 36 hours, in 4 hour bouts a night, five nights a week.
I killed, to obtain my mount, 15120 as a near estimate. Seems about right once you account for passing Thundermaw packs which I wholley reccomend murdering.
Best of luck guys. I hope you still retain your sanity and don't see hallucinations.
But now I have to go speak to the bear in a tuxedo who just appeared on my bed.
long time ago i have 2

Good Luck to all
My first skyshard just dropped for me today.Beat 676 mobs(rarity addon counted the kills) and finally dropped:)
drops influenced by the total number of loots on a server during a day or a week or do the chances to get one increase after the daily reset or the weekly reset?
1 P.S. : After i farmed 7 so far, i don't think they are influenced by the resets, at least doesn't seem so. I have tried with the
mentioned by WascoTTE too and seems they aren't influenced by that either and started using the Rarity addon from Curse and saw they drop somewhere around 700 mobs killed...after each 700 mobs...800 in some cases i get 1 shard and another 1 after 100 more...then again a big pause for the next 700. Though if you are an Alchemist and don't spend much to make that potion you could definitely use it as u get lots of
which give u extra gold.
2 P.S. : I must add that i'm at last shard to get and already farmed 1600 mobs, only for 10th shard, and no drop yet! I'll add third P.S. when done. Seems like first shards were easier to get. Damn!
3 P.S. : 2200 mobs already at shard #10 (88% luckiness on Rarity addon) and still counting...i might try on different char too.
4 P.S. : Got the last shard after killing 2583 mobs at 92%.
So as a total for 9
(as first 1 i got in a
on a different char) i killed 6018 mobs in 16 hours and 53 minutes. So, after all, its as WascoTTE posted...around 6k mobs needed for the shards. GL ALL! with this damn boring and annoying farm. Though you might consider yourself lucky for not farming the
Just got my 10th shard!
Total Kills: 15,032
Longest stretch before shard: 3,801
Shortest stretch before shard: 552
Time taken: 10 days
Do these still drop?
I have around 5000 kills and not a single one has dropped since 5.3. First one was around the first week I turned 90 before the vale turned to ash.
Maybe I just have bad RNG.
After farming another 600+/- one dropped, then 150+/- later another dropped.
something seems to changed lately. used to get them every 700 to 2200 kills now way over 6000 and nothing more. stuck on 8
I'm on sky shard #6 that's after taking two toons to exulted with dallies and countless hours of farming since MOP release. The last 2 shards took over 2500 kills straight farming / grinding mogu in big groups real fast. Been grinding forever. Now get this a guild mate got 34 last night, and regularly gets them easy and he has made a market out selling the mount.. WTH blizzard?
I don't believe the Tricksters are in the Vale any longer since the Shattering. I tried to look them up and only got this list:
Is the dropping of this item tied to actually Owning the mount kind of like Unique equipped items becuase i got this mount last week and now after 3 hrs of farming and over 1k kills no drops of the shards
I have been farming to the south of the Guo-Lai Ruins and through the course of looting my first 3
I collected about 90
Don't throw these away! Behind the end boss (I assume you need decent rep to go to him - I forget) in Guo-Lai Halls there's 11 caches that respawn very quickly. The loot is awesome, and more relevantly one of them had a
The guy looting the cache next to me wasn't very impressed.
Hey guys! Here to add my review of the grind and how it went for me:
To start off with. Wow. Its truly been a grind i've actually enjoyed for some reason, one thing that is important when you start farming this is to DONT lose faith. You may ask why and now i'll explain it to you:
1st 34 kills
2th around 1k kills.
3th 430 kills.
4th 58 kills
5th 7209 kills
6th 1904 kills
7th 1403 kills
8th 185 kills
9th 643 kills
10th 151 kills.
As you can see i was pretty lucky in the start but on the grind to the 5th... Holy !@#$. I was SO close to lose motivation. But do not lose heart, as you can see i had to kill 7209 before it dropped. The grind is hard, but i also did make a fair amount of gold. I made about 50-60k gold for all the materials from the chests, green drops, motes of harmony etc. You will make alot of money during this.
<Warning: Novella post cause I'm verbose like that >
Now, I am SURE this is superstitious, and I'm not even remotely that way ... normally, but I *just* got a Skyshard drop after farming like 2 hours last night and 2 hours this morning with potion of luck (which I know doesn't do anything) - but here's my story on the latest drop:
Out of the blue, I decide to talk to some other random person farming in the Vale at the typical location in the Ruins of Gun Lai (I'm not normally much of a random talker either...)
So, I'm talking to this other person about grinding black prince rep at that location vs. on the Isle of Thunder, and they didn't know anything about Skyshards (and why there would be so many people farming the ruins), so I tell them what they're for. I'm like, "I've killed 1000s the past 4 hours with no luck, blah blah" and I link a Skyshard to them.
We wish each other luck on our journeys and literally one minute after I linked a Skyshard to them to show them what they were, on my very next pull of like 5-6 of those guys, I got a drop.
Coincidence? Uh... I'm gonna say it's the magical RNG? Some good mojo from the universe? SOMETHING?
I mean, come on.... 4 hours + of nothing, then I link it to someone in a message and less than a minute later I get one to drop?
You might call BS, but I was so shocked, I came right over here to post... It's just super weird... I
know, I'm a skeptic too, and I don't expect my comment to be all popular or anything - especially with me typing a novella, but this is more a big THANK YOU to the universe for my 6th Skyshard ...
Now... back to miserable farming :D
I Farmed all 10 Skyshards in around 4 Hours Straight,My Luck Helped me again with that ;)
yup course you got 10 shard in 4 hours.what utter rubbish and how does bragging like this help anyone?
In a stunning turn of events, I just got one of these to drop off a Stone Watcher mob in the weekly "Treasure Trove" scenario on the Isle of Thunder. My jaw dropped when I looted the mob and the "Need/Greed/Roll" window popped up with the purple Skyshard.
sprites aka tricksters no longer in game, so dont follow the guides that suggest using them as an easy grind.
this is bug or does not work after you get the mount
im now almosh 10k kill and no stone
Can anyone confirm this
This may be stating the obvious, but it was something I was curious about and I couldn't find it in the comments yet. You CAN mail skyshards to one of your characters on a different server, just like heirloom gear. I had one I had gotten by chance on a hunter of mine on Lightninghoof, and was able to send it to my shaman on Moon Guard, who is my main and the character I've been farming with. I'm really glad this is possible, since one skyshard can take so long to get.
I think the drop rate on the conquerors and painweavers may have been nerfed more after the WoD announcement. Pre-announcement I had 3 skyshards, and they dropped at around 1 every 800. I farm about 400 mobs in 1 hour as an ilvl 557 ele shaman, and havent gotten a single one in about 5 hours. If there is a way to help with data collection?
When I first log into my main I use a potion of luck (has a 20 minute duration) just for extra gold and loot when I'm doing this. In 20 minutes I'm killing AT LEAST 100 enemies, probably more like 150 enemies per potion. I've just gotten through a stack of 20 of these potions, thus my estimate of 2,000. A more realistic count would be closer to 3,000.
Not a single skyshard. Getting 10? Hell no. The mount isn't even that cool. Nice troll, blizzard.
How do ppl know how many kills they have till one drops ,is there some ad on keeping track ?
any1 know if im just unlucky here as im getitng really frustrated with this grind im at 1900 kills with no drop and i got the last 3 each wihtin 400-600 kills?
I don't know if this is a real thing or not, but I'm led to believe you cannot obtain Skyshards while you have any in your bank; I got 4 pretty quickly in the course of questing, doing my rare kill achievements, and so on. I then chucked then in the bank because I wasn't planning on farming them specifically.
I just started farming them today, and at a cumulative kill total over 1500 since the last drop (I know that's still probably well within the bounds of RnG) I dedicded to pull them out of bank. First kill back, and a Skyshard drops.
Annecdotal evidence, probably not really like this, I know, but I wouldn't take any chances if you're seriously farming these and are having drop issues.
Would love to hear if anyone has looted a Skyshard while having 0 in inventory but some more in the bank!
Thanks for the comments, confirmed below that you can loot Skyshards if they're in your bank, contrary to my speculation.
Everyone commenting on how many kills it is taking them to get a skyshard..painful as this is and I am right there with you, have to realize Blizzard enjoys wasting our time, seriously, think about all the time sinks in this game and you will understand they get enjoyment from 1. giving us quest to pick up dung or somehow involving dung and 2. making certain items impossible to get in a resonable amount of time. It is my opinion and only mine that they do this to distract us while they rake in millions.
Been farming these for days and have not gotten one drop, have they been removed from the game or what is the deal? Can anyone tell me!
I know that my personal stats are probably of no interest to some of you who understand that RNG is obviously different for everyone, but I am sure there are those of you who are curious about the experiences of others. I like to read through stuff like this to motivate me while farming elusive crap in WoW, so I figured posting my numbers wouldn't hurt. I used the addon Rarity to track my kills. So here we go:
4. 3615 - My will to continue wavered dangerously here.
Total Kills to collect 10 Skyshards - 10482
Well, since I had nothing better to do while farming these, I decided to jot down some numbers for those who are curious about total gold earned; a glorious benefit of the grind.
I farmed with my ilvl 568 hunter with legendary cloak (for sweet AOE, along with
). Timing myself, I managed to kill 594 mobs in one hour. If I had been serious (flasked, buffed, and intensely farming), I could have pushed 8 or 9 hundred kills per hour. I was moderately farming. I even stopped to eat a brownie.
My farming route was in Guo-Lai Halls (Northwest, Vale of Eternal Blossoms, underground ). When you go down into the chamber you will find that you can make a continuous circuit back and forth through the right and left chambers, clearing all mobs along the way. They respawn very quickly. There is also a north chamber which I largely ignored, because it just didn't seem like an efficient addition to the route.
During my hour, I came up with this:
564g - Vendor trash, (greys, greens, and miscellaneous)
148g - Mob silver, averaging 2.5 gold per 10 mobs killed
365g - AH mats, mostly
, but a few stacks of
Ghost Iron Ore
. There are also a couple rares which spawn along the way which have a chance to drop
Treasures of the Vale
, that can contain stuff like
and other Pandaren goods.
Mote of Harmony
, enough to create 8
Spirit of Harmony
, which I invested in
. These sell for abut 25-28g each right now on my server, Ysera.
These mobs also have the chance to drop
Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Key
. After the hour was over, I had 20 keys, which net me:
594g - Gold from opening the chests
300g - AH mats from more
Treasures of the Vale
So my average income during this seemingly endless adventure was
2371g per one hour of farming
. Not too shabby.
When we consider my 10482 kills and hour stats above, one can assume I farmed around
during this endeavor.
10482/594 = 17.64
17.64 * 2371 = 41824.44
Total Kills / Hourly Kills = Hours Farmed
Hours Farmed * Hourly Gold = Total Gold
This seems consistent with what I saw in my bags. Keep in mind you also have a small chance while farming to come across certain rare pieces of armor which can sell for a good sum on the AH. I managed to pick up -
Dill's Primal Leggings
Legguards of Sleeting Arrows
Hood of Alchemical Vapors
You can also expect to gather the occasional
Ghost Iron Lockbox
, which on average contains about 50g worth of gold and items.
So in summation, I am one
Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent
and 41824 gold richer, but I also lost almost a full day of my life.
Still dropping as of 6.0.2, in case anyone was wondering.
Spent about 6 hours farming with 700-800 kills per hour in Gou Lai Halls as 570 destro lock, underground in VOEB. Still no single skyshard....still trying.
Just brought for 11.5k :D best deal ever
i dont know whats up but ive been getting one a day (a day being about 6-8 hours but only farming keys and motes for about half of that time each day) did they increase the drop rate maybe?
Farmed the skyshards for over a year, nothing. Now more than a TWO WEEKS of farming ... and not ONE MISERABLE SKYSHARD ... WTF.
More than SEVEN tears of farming the Time Lost Protodrake ... NOTHING.
More than SIX years farming the Horseman's mount ... NOTHING
More than NINE years farming the mount from the Baron at Old Strat ... NOTHING
... the SAME THING with every mount in the game ...
I begin to DOUBT that the
-- Shao-Tien Conquerors OR Shao-Tien Painweavers are actually the correct mobs to get the Skyshards. I farmed FOUR characters from 0 Golden Lotus Rep to Exalted ... and did not get even ONE. That is a hell of a lot of mobs killed. The only Skyshards that I have managed to get come from the mobs inside the halls where the dailies are done.
I haven't seen this mentioned in here, and it may only be post-6.0.2, but today was a typical day. Within 3 minutes of entering the halls, I had 6 keys and 3 skyshards. I then used the keys when I got round to the chests. After that the drops stopped. Not another key (or shard) in 1/2 hour. This is pretty much always the way it is. So bottom line...when you're in there farming whatever, don't use the keys until you're done for the day.
As of 6.0.3, I've farmed over 3k kills on Shao-Tien mobs with zero drops. Prior to that, 6.0.2 and before, I was getting drops between 200 and 700 kills. It seems to me that the shards are either not dropping, or their drop rate has been significantly reduced.
Can anyone corroborate this?
Hi, I just get this great mount, here is a video with some informations about the place to activate the crystal and taunt Alani.
For those reporting a severely nerfed drop rate as of 6.1, I do not believe this to be the case.
I finally bucked up and decided to farm skyshards yesterday morning. Literally after about 10 hours, I had all ten. It took me just under 5000 mob kills (4998 to be exact), with the longest stretch being about 850 mobs before I saw one (through rarity). I'm sure I got very lucky in some cases, but people wanting to farm shards should not expect a horrible 3k+ mob grind for each shard.
To clarify, I farmed the Mogu Ancient Spirits. Lots there and they respawn fast. Good luck all!
I would add that for those who like unintended toys, the fusing animation for this is quite interesting and can be used forever as long as you cancel the cast before it finishes. Although for the effort to get one of these, most probably would want to go ahead and just use it.
7:45am. Just finished all-nighter. Preparing to leave for work at 8:30am.
"Yo I'm so out of it I can't do anything except farm something. I know, I'll try Skyshards. Haven't tried that yet."
20 minutes later
(Yells in-game) YOOO EVERYONE I GOT ONE YEA I FOUND A SKYSHARD HA
Literally yelled it to all the other players farming around me. Saw at least 7 different people farming for it. Seriously, hilarious.
I will probably never find another one but yelling out loud to all the other guys was just so satisfying.
I've gotten 2 of these in 121 attempts so far.
While farming these I kept
Rune of Ascendancy
up. Helped to kill a little bit faster.
1st 245 Kills
3th 3296 Thought would never end - spoiled with 1st 2 so quick.
7th 3536 (As I passed my other 3K one I was worried I'd be way higher)
9th 1751 (is this going to be another huge amount of kills before it drops? Phew 1/2)
10th 260 FINALLY after 11,162 kills and 10hrs15min29sec of time -10 Sky Shards. Only 260 but took forever it seemed b/c it was the last and i could taste the end.
Of course, Alani who has been flying above me all this time taunting me with his shadow, is suddenly less evident had to go chasing around to look for him. Never thought THAT would be an issue.
I finished gathering them today and since people seem to enjoy, I'll post some numbers here, please keep in mind that I only got rarity addon after I already had 2 shards (i got them doing dailies for rep and not farming).
The data from Rarity:
Total time farming (not consdering the two I got earlier) was 10:25.
Total ammount of mobs killed was 6854.
I got all the 10 shards at Guo-Lai Halls, 5, 6, 7 and 8 all on the same day.
Made about 14,000 gold (gold + items sold in AH and items sold to NPC).
What a pain in the ass..
After a long time of farming I finally got the 10 shards.
My addon started counting when I had 2 shards, in total I killed 13745 mobs for 8 shards.
One thing I forgot.. I got the mount but couldn't learn it because that char wasn't exalted with The August Celestials. So.. my next job is to get exalted haha :-)
So when you have the shards.. check if that char is exalted with the August Celestials! If not, send them to a char who is!
Good luck farming :-)
I don't know if its just me or what, but i have no flippin idea how people are getting these to drop so quickly, i got my 4th before i got rarity and i'm now over 5800 kills and still don't have my 5th. I've been known to have bad luck with drops (over 400 runs in strat to get the deathcharger to drop) but this is insane this will take months at this rate.
I got the first 9 shards really quickly, with a maximum of about 400 kills for my seventh and a minimum of 33 kills for my first. However, I am now over 6000 kills and still haven't seen my tenth shard. It's really bugging me, since the disparity of kills between the first 9 (about 1800 kills total for the first 9) and the tenth is ABYSMAL and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. Anybody has run into this issue or is it just bad luck on my side?
EDIT: Finally got mine! Posting stats for those who are curious
1st Skyshard: 33 attempts (33 total)
2nd Skyshard: 132 attempts (165 total)
3rd Skyshard: 125 attempts (290 total)
4th Skyshard: 77 attempts (367 total)
5th Skyshard: 144 attempts (511 total)
6th Skyshard: 79 attempts (590 total)
7th Skyshard: 389 attempts (979 total)
8th Skyshard: 472 attempts (1451 total)
9th Skyshard: 753 attempts (2204 total)
10th Skyshard: 4808 attempts (7012 total)
What a ramp up in difficulty! Proud owner of my own Alani mount now :P
I finished farming my Skyshards today. Here are my stats (starting counting kills after the 1st)
I mostly farmed the mogu in Ruins of Guo-Lai and around there. Even if you're unlucky with drops, the more you farm the more gold you get from mats and boes.
Hi boys ! I've just made a few calculations :
If you consider that the global droprate of a skyshard is 0.25%, 50 % of you will have gotten the 10 skyshards before having killed 4000 mobs in the Vale.
70 % of you will have gotten the 10 skyshards before having killed 4600 mobs in the Vale.
90 % of you will have gotten the 10 skyshards before having killed 5700 mobs in the Vale.
And finally, 99.9% of you will have gotten the 10 skyshards before having killed 9000 mobs in the Vale.
Let's get exalted with the golden lotus, babe !
I didn't played MoP cause I quitted WoW after DS came out, so I thought "Why not get a at least one of these cute dragons from Pandaria?" and I started farming this. I don't know but for me it was fairly easy. First day, 2.30 hours I got 6 shards. Next day, 1.30h another 2 and today around 1 hour of farming and I got the last 2. Killed Alani and I found out I can't even learn the mount! I need to be exalted with august celestial! :( So now I need to begin farm Zandalari Warbringers :| ty blizzard, love ya
just found out this on 6.2.2 patch notes:
Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent no longer has a reputation requirement with The August Celestials to learn.
Well I farmed the rep anyway, really easy. I got exalted with August Celestial, Shado Pan and Klaxxi in around 6 hours of Zandalari farming.
As of the patch on Sept. 1, 2015, the Skyshard is no longer soul bound but is now account bound. I don't know about the Sky Crystal as I have only gotten one shard so far.
I'm going crazy already. Killed 2000+ now and still no shard.
I just have to kill them right? There's nothing else i have to do before they start dropping right?
One drop would already be satisfying, since i would know i'm on the right path.
so they nerf or what? just spend 8h straight and nothing after the xpac.
I have been farming these the past few days and so far the 5 i have collected all dropped in Guo Lai Halls at around 4-5am on llane US server
im so stupidfor past .i got6 and. didnt know what is this . just throw aways /..now i want to cry-,-
I also see something wrong with this item, it used to drop a little, I've collected 6 so far, and after 6.2.2 came I've spent 3 hours farming relevant mobs in the Vale (that is around 1000 mobs killed) and no single drop. Well, may be I'm crazy unlucky lately but there may be something on the game side as well. I still hope it's just bad luck.
Anyone have an idea on the post Warlords drop rate of these things? 6k kills in and still no sight of another one.
Took me about 4 days to collect all 10 Skyshards, six hours on average a day, had 3 lucky shards within one of the hours.Farmed them in Guo'Lai Halls, probably wasn't the most efficient but seemed very profitable when I sold the crafting materials
I finally got my 10 shards. It took 5092 kills. I found the best place is at Winterbough Glade. Fast respawn and plenty of spawns. 100's can 1-2 shot the mobs.
RNG is RNG, this farm reminds me of the the time sink getting
I like many got some of these shards during MOP. (2) I decided to try my luck at farming and unfortunately have not had the good fortune that many have reported having.
Shard 1 - 110
Shard 2 - 407
Shard 3 - 563
Shard 4 -
Shard 5 TBD - Need a break after shard 4! On the plus side I collected 234
Good luck and happy farming!
I've been trying to farm this again like I did twice before in my usual routine. Gotten jack @#$% for about... Eight hours? Are they still obtainable?
Yes they are still obtainable. I don't farm them every day. I went quite a long time from farming #3 to #4 because I just didn't do it. I am currently working on #6. When I am done i will come back n report the data which I am mostly tracking through the addon rarity.
I farmed at Winterbough Glade around 30,50. There's around 30 or so mobs around the camp & by the time you kill these the first ones you killed should be close to respawning. The majority of the mobs I 1 shot as a decent gear hunter so I was killing the whole camp in around 2 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised by the drop rate for the majority of the time spent. I got my first 9 in approximately 8 hours, after that it was a bit of a grind to get my 10th, took almost 3 hours for the last to drop but that's RNG for you.
10196 tries for all 10 shards
356 on first one
3476 on second
1477 on third
1003 on 4
789 on 5
1544 on 6
74 on 7

Pretty much 2-4 days farming nothing special. Most people try to intimmidate others.I really don't get that!
After reading some comments i thought it will be long and painfull grind (im not he farmer type) but i needed only 4 shards so whatever, i just do it!
16min. It took me f***ing 16 min.
98 for 1, 127 for 2, 84 for 3, 13 for 4 and last one.
I was doing it inside Guo-lai Halls if anyone is curious, jumping beetwen few servers.
After reading more comments i higly suggest dropping them in Guo-lai Halls, maybe there is increased drop inside, because its higly unlikly i got lucky 4 times in a row.
I never saw 1 of these drop in BoP after killing 1000's on different characters farming rep and doing dailies. Shortly after WoD was released I farmed up 1 with my hunter, prob took 500 kills then forgot about it for a while till yesterday.
I grabbed my hunter and started farming in the front area Guo-Lai Halls, going from left to right and hopping servers at each end, only going through the back and down when you need to turn in a bunch of keys, here are my numbers for the last 9 shards
2nd - 338
3rd - 1129
4th - 499
5th - 811
6th - 169
7th - 174
8th - 184
9th - 32
10th - 84
3420 kill in 2 nights, think I got a bit lucky for a change, also made around 5k in gold for trash/greens and caches plus a ton of mats that I just mailed of to my bank alt.
1st Skyshard: I found by accident while working on some quest.
2nd Skyshard: 573 attempts
3rd Skyshard: 5 attempts
4th Skyshard: 809 attempts
5th Skyshard: 784 attempts
6th Skyshard: 1062 attempts
7th Skyshard: 720 attempts
8th Skyshard: 1449 attempts
9th Skyshard: 6463 attempts
10th Skyshard: 1245 attempts
Think that I was broke a record in the worst chances of drop, hehe but I got it Finally. Also When I made Sky Crystal, I was wait for 2-3 days Dear Alani the Stormborn to Shows Up. I'm not waiting or camped, just check a couple of times a day... With no pressure :) Good Luck (:
Tip to make extra gold: if you aren't in a rush to get the mount, farm the shards during Love is in the Air (Valentines Day) world event. You can get a ton of extra
for the lovebird mount to sell.
With the % drop chance, it's going to be 200-300 kills each
(If you farm in a good spot)
Well... it is only 200-300 kills each one, if you are a lucky bastard :/
I had been farming the Mogu in and around Guo-Lai halls for four days before obtaining all 10 of my sky shards. I found that grinding in the figure of 8 (the middle being Guo-Lai Halls) the most effective way, however this area is extremely popular with anyone looking for Sky Shards. Not just players, but a lot of bots - which was the most frustrating part for me.
As a Paladin I had to agro large groups and then AOE them down, but bots would take them as untagged and AOE them down before I could. So during daylight hours I found it really hard to grind, so during this time I would sit between two points where the Mogu are fighting the Corruptions (34:38, 32:39) and use realm assist to hop, killing these two points over and over. The repawn on these mobs are 60 seconds, so you will always come across them.
I found 6/10 of my ten shards this way, however you must ensure that there are no other hoppers in the area doing the same thing, as if a shard does drop it will be rolled against.
After my fifth shard, I found the grind unbearable! So I decided to download rarity and see how many kills I was doing.
The first day I found five shards, the first one dropping within the first few kills. The second day I got one and the third day three, I finished the grind on the forth.
6th: 4019 (this was two hours into grinding for a shard, so I would add atleast another 2000 to this shard alone)
Although farming these shards does make you lose your sanity at the best of times, the gold value of farming made it tolerable in my opinion. I was gathering all keys to open the caches in the halls (which give you 35g + per box, Cache and Materials), selling all BoE', Materials and Spirit of Harmony, as well as opening all the lock boxes that dropped too.
At the end of the four days grind I had made 56k, so along with a new mount - a huge amount of gold is amazing too.
Keep with it everyone, its well worth it :)
First the raw data (gleaned from the add-on
54,201 kills in the Vale
3 Skyshards - all looted from Mogu in the Vale
41,496 kills in the Vale
3 Skyshards - all looted from Mogu in the Vale
37,915 kills in the Vale
1 Skyshard - looted from a
's Cache on Timeless Isle (yeah, I know, it's not supposed to happen)
14,253 kills in the Vale
13,470 kills in the Vale
My Empirical Observation:
Prior to 6.2.0, I could rely on at least one Skyshard to drop for about every 12,500 to 15,000 kills. After 6.2.0 went live, that drop rate no longer holds true.
Additional Stratagems Tried:
Pick-pocketing, mentioned by other players as a worthwhile means to collect Skyshards pre-6.0.2. I spent 1 hr 38 mins pick-pocketing every Mogu in the western half of the Vale. I personally never had any luck doing this.
I tried farming the various rares of the Vale for
. Although many claims to the contrary appear in the comments here, I never had a Skyshard drop from any Treasure of the Vale. A bit of research provided this information, there was formerly another version (see
) that was removed in the 5.3.0 or 5.4.0 update. I believe that all references to drops from TotV refer to this no longer available version.
I tried farming the cow and mantids for shards and this proved fruitless as well.
I tried farming specific areas of the Vale as mention in posts on Wowhead and the official forum, no named area of the map demonstrated an increased drop rate.
I tried targeting specific mobs as recommended in posts on Wowhead and the official forum, no type of mob demonstrated an increased drop rate.
improved the over-all profit of my ventures, it did not in anyway effect an increase in the drop rate of Skyshards.
I tried a variety of character classes: Rogue, Hunter, Paladin, Druid, Mage, Warlock, Death Knight. No class seemed to alter the drops or drop rate one way or the other.
in various parts of
as often as I had 10 or more of the keys. While the Guo-Lai Caches did drop the occasional rare Skyshard for others in my guild, they never did for me.
Discussing this with other players in the zone who were also farming Skyshards, there is general belief and consensus of belief that Blizzard has either broken the drop table or altered the drop table so that Skyshards are nearly impossible to acquire. Several players suggested that "too many players were getting too easily" what was by design supposed to be a very rare mount.
However, at the same time, several players claimed they had little or no problem getting Skyshards, one claiming to have five drop in two hours. This seems preposterous to me based on the literally
of hours I have spent grinding in the Vale between January 2015 and March 2016.
During and after 6.2.0, the drop rate for Skyshards - which was already abysmal - was heavily nerfed (again). However, RNG is RNG. Yet when the numbers get to the point they are with me, it either illustrates that RNG as implemented in WoW is severely imbalanced or I have the worst luck in the history of my guild.
After posting here, I returned to my weekly grind in the Vale and in the matter of about an hour and 20 minutes, one after another Skyshard dropped. First one from a Shao-Tien Fist, then another from Vicejaw, then a third (the last I needed) from another Shao-Tien Fist. (288 additional kills and 21
later) After the nearly six month dry spell, what flew uncensored from my mouth as this transpired is unpostable. And happy as I am, I cannot help feeling that hidden in electronic darkness, someone at Blizzard lifted the "no soup for you" that had been on my account XD - in any event, it serves to illustrate my cause for believing that the RNG in WoW is severely imbalanced: 161,623 kills total for 10 Skyshards = 0.00062% over-all drop rate, while the last 3 Skyshards came at a 1.04% drop rate. The variable used for RNG is probably not changing/refreshing often enough.
As soon as I converted my 10 Skyshards into a Sky Crystal - Alani literally despawned before my eyes. It's just like
in Halfhill Market, there almost everyday until you get the quest
gone. Bitter? A little...
By using LFG custom groups, I was able to realm hop until I was on a server-cluster that Alani was visible to me, truly within 30 seconds of affecting the realm hop, I had my
. A year and two months of the grindingest grindfest I have ever had to do in this game finally paid off. Thanks be unto the Blood-thirsty Gods of my Pagan Ancestors, it is over....
I noticed hidden away in my bank, I had 5 skyshards ... I decided to just grind the remaining 5. At first, I stuck to the outdoors around Ruins of Guo-Lai. But soon that became absolutely crowded with other farmers.
I moved my farming inside to Guo-Lai Halls, and I'm not sure if I finally got lucky with WoW or what but within two hours I was able to pick up 4 skyshards. However, that final skyshard took me close to 4 hours to farm.
My method was to start in the Ritual Chamber, then the main entrance, over to the Hall of Statues. Then by the time I ran back to the Ritual Chamber, everything had already respawned to rinse and repeat. Once I looted a lot of
, I would hit up the vault and pick up
I did bring a lot of
and picked up a fair amount of
As a spriest, it isn't bad farming ... just go around the room and hit dev plague and let the NPC's come to you, which made looting a breeze.
All-in-all, it took me approximately six hours to get the remaining 5 skyshards (my initial skyshards I had on hand from the Vale dailies when MoP was current.)
Best of luck!
I regret it so much not having bought the mount in MoP when they went for like 15k, tried to farm shards for hours now during several nights, starfall is just amazing for that but still haven´t seen a single shard drop, probably just gonna wait to buy it from the bmah, not worth the time to farm
Patch 6.2.4. After 20-25 April drop rate fell again in 5. Maybe it seems to me. After I prilovchilis I received 1 crystal for 20-40 minutes. Now it should be 4 hour. I think the selling price will jump up to 40-50k.
From End of March till today I have gotten 9, I haven't seen a single one in about 3 weeks now.
Honestly, this is to easy. Farming with a 705 geared druid with star fall I can round up 10 in one day and then turn around and sell it for 75K. So easy to make money here. Even now, I did 10 yesterday. Couple hours maybe. It is a matter of how many things you can kill in a given amount of time.
I had 9 of these and threw them away cos i didn't know what they were for :)
I just recently finished collecting all 10. I worked on this over the past couple weeks and theses were my results:
1st- Had in bag from MOP. No clue how many kills when I picked it up
Of the remaining 9 after my first initial drop, the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th all came from Guo-Lai Halls. The remainder were from areas outside the halls.
I just started farming these and want to make sure that there is nothing special I need to do, like have a certain rep or anything, for the skyshards to drop.
Quick hour or so farm tonight
first one after 608 kill
second one after 231 kills
third one after 5 kills
RNG is RNG
The first nine dropped easily. I would farm one or two at a time and I always got them within two or three hours of farming. The last one took over 2000 kills and four hours before it dropped.
The first one dropped after about 2,000 kills but since then, over 7,000 kills and not a single shard.
So I farmed 10 Skyshards over the past few days from different Shao Tien. I ended up with over 300+ Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Keys. I went to use them and ended up getting 3 SKYSHARDS! That's right so I probably wasted a few hours farming mobs when i should have used these keys. So, use your keys once your getting around 6-7 Skyshards. You might get lucky. Now I have 3 extra Skyshards with my Skycrystal.
As of 21 July 2016. Everyone in your group will get the mount drop. They must be in your group.
I started my
farm this morning (07/24/2016 at approximately 0700 hours PST). My drops were as follows:
I was extremely lucky, as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th drops were within 1 minute of each other.
The 6th, 7th, and 8th drops were within 2 minutes of each other.
All drops were in Guo-Lai Halls. I tried farming Guo-Lai Ruins, and the forested area between Mistfall Village and the Ruins (forget the name) for a few hours each to no avail.
All in all, I only spent ~5 hours to attain all 10
. Fairly painless.
Due to the new looting system it seems all those involved with the kill get the loot.
Skyshard Farming Method.
Curious if the drop rate on these have been reduced specifically from the guo-lai caches. I finished my last farm off with 150+ keys getting 6 or 7 shards. Now back for another farm a week later and 100 keys in I didn't have one shard drop from them. Maybe just bad rng but still curious. Thanks!
1 year later and i have not seen another drop i have 6 on 1 toon and have spent 5 hours a day trying to get more and nothing... thinking my account may be bugged...
Since i couldnt find any information at ancient guo-lai cache , people dont know about Skyshard droping from them or not sharing information.
Already dropped 2 skyshard using about 80 keys ! dont have cache SS because autoloot =P.
Hope this comment helped
I'm not sure if anyone confirmed this as of yet, but today I farmed around 4000 Mogu's near the ruins of Guo-Lai, and got 0
. What I did get though, were
(around 30). At first I thought I was being really unlucky, but after giving up on the mob grinding, I decided to go into the Guo-Lai Halls and opened some of the chests located there with the
. Surprise surprise, I got 3
Can anyone confirm if they still got shards from NPCs in the Vale? Was it just my lack of luck or did the mechanics change?
Can anyone confirm if this still drops as of Legion, and if so if the current drop list is accurate? Been farming Shao-Tien for weeks and I am perfectly fine with accepting it's just bad luck but there's been a lot of updates since this post.
I spent 4 hours tonight farming up the last of the Skyshards I needed. I started with 8. I farmed up 3.
1. Shao-Tien Antiquator
2. Guo-Lai Cache
3. Guo-Lai Cache
You cannot carry more than 10 in your bags at a time. Unfortunately, my third Skyshard could not be looted because I had 10, and since it was in a Cache, once I exited the loot window the chest despawned. I would have cried if I hadn't already had my will to live crushed by farming up 10 of them previous.
These CAN drop in the Guo-Lai Caches, if my sad tale above wasn't enough to get that across. I submitted a screenshot, unfortunately my auto-loot was on, but you can clearly see that it is in my chat log, and I have the empty pedestals in front of my character.
To clarify, it was in the CACHE, not the Treasures of the Vale rare-quality boxes that you can loot from the caches.
January 13 2016. I have been farming for SKYSHARD for 12 days. I just used the 34 keys that I have for the Guo Lai vaults. I have NEVER gotten a shard.
Lol how do people farm 10 of these? I spent the last 5 hours killing Shao Tien Fist. Not even one dropped :(
Farming Skyshards in Legion
(my horrifyingly long experience)
I started farming these two years ago in Draenor. I got frustrated after my first drop and took a year off. I decided a month ago to commit to finally getting it over with and I've kept a detailed record of my experience farming them to share on Wowhead. Below I have listed each drop and how many attempts (recorded thanks to the Rarity addon through curse, something I recommend for anyone interested in keeping track) between each drop (the number counted the number of LOOTS, not mob kills, as there were often 3-7 mobs in each loot).
1. Shao Tien Fist, Guo Lai Halls (1,012 loots before next drop)
2. Shao Tien Sorcerer, Guo Lai Halls (232 loots before next drop)
3. Shao Tien Conqueror, Winterbough Glade (89 loots before next drop)
4. Shao Tien Soul Caller, Ruins of Guo-Lai (612 loots before next drop)
5. Shao Tien Fist, Autumn Shade Ridge (243 loots before next drop)
6. Shao Tien Dominator, Ruins of Guo-Lai (432 loots before next drop)
7. Shao Tien Sorcerer, Autumnshade Ridge (502 loots before next drop)
8. Shao Tien Antiquator, Autumnshade Ridge (282 loots before next drop)
9. Shao Tien Antiquator, Autumnshade Ridge (241 loots before next drop)
10. Shao Tien Antiquator, Autumnshade Ridge (/cheer - - I NEVER HAVE TO FARM THIS CRAP AGAIN!)
In total, I had 3,653 loots (at 3-6 kills per loot) making an average of a drop every 365.3 loots (but as you can see above, this average is misleading to say the least since it was as few as 89 loots to as many as over 1k between one drop and the next).
Now, here are my personal tips for farming these in Legion:
Any 100+ toon with decent AOE will speed things up immensely; for example, warriors with bladestorm, DKs with death and decay, etc. but a hunter with barrage is unbeatable as far as speedily farming.
The entire Vale is VERY heavily farmed (as anyone who's tried this endeavor knows all too well). Having a toon with solid AOE will give you an advantage (also any speed bursts are helpful such as rogue, druid, or monk).
I know people have traditionally believed that the Shao Tien Fists and/in Guo Lai Halls are the best places for farming Skyshards. My experience was completely different, as you can see above. While I did have 2 drop either from a Fist and/or in Halls, the place with the highest drop rate for me BY FAR was the camps of Shao Tien Antiquators in Autumnshade Ridge (and with a fairly fast respawn, it's easy enough to circle...you get a route down pretty quickly). Four of my drops in Autumnshade came from the same camp in the far Northwest corner (just inside the NW corner of the wall).
The two that I had drop inside Guo-Lai Halls came from mobs standing in doorway arches. Coincidence or not is up to you to decide.
I had NO drops from any of the rares in Vale and/or in Guo-Lai Halls despite hundreds of kills. I also had no drops from Milau (by the treasure chests downstairs) but a whole lot of sharp fangs. I really expected going into this that one would drop either from a Guo Lai Cache or a Treasure of the Vale; I read that they could drop from them and I opened close to a thousand. As you can see, however, I personally did not have a single Skyshard drop in their loot (enough Trillium, Ghost Iron and Spirits of Harmony to make a small fortune with, though).
For two years I would fly into Alani on my way to farm Skysahrds to remotivate myself. Never missed her. When I finally went to kill her, unbelievably, she was nowhere to be found. Someone else must have killed her right before me; this was the icing on the FML cake. Two hours later, she hasn't respawned yet. I will update with the respawn time when I finally see her up.
So, in conclusion, yes...these still drop (although there were plenty of moments I started to question it myself). It is absolutely a grind and you need to prepare yourself for that reality ahead of time before you set out to help minimize the inevitable frustration and disappointment.
One last piece of advice,
don't be a jerk
. Three of my Skyshard drops came shortly after someone pushed me off of a spot I was already farming (the same thing happened in Borean Tundra and led to me getting my Sea Turtle mount
/sea-turtle#comments:id=2289813 ). If you see someone farming in a spot, there are plenty of other spots to farm. Pushing them off a spot will (in my experience) lead to you helping them in their farm unwittingly.
I know it's easy to want to give up on this farm, but it's totally worth it. Just keep at it and you WILL get it! Happy Hunting!
edit: Alani finally respawned 24 hours after I last saw her alive and 18 hours after I couldn't find her the first time.
I noticed that a lot of these guides and posts are from older patches so I thought I'd share my grind process with everyone. I managed to get the
after 12-18 hrs of game play time. The mogu around the ruins rise and in the vicinity of guo'lai halls were where I was farming for the fragments and I'd get one every 1.5-3 hrs. Even if there are other players there who are farming it doesn't seem to be an issue of shortage with the mobs it mostly is up to how persistent you are and how badly you want the mount. The reason I liked farming the guo'lai area was because of the fact that the mogu drop the keys which you can use to open the chests in the guo'lai halls and those chests gave me 4 of my 10 shards (for a while I thought I would only be getting the last 5 shards from the chests). It takes roughly 30 keys per a shard maybe more if you're unlucky and less if you're really lucky. I'd go down to open chests every time I had 11-20 keys.
I'd strongly recommend putting some music on while you do this grind since it will almost assuredly take a small eternity and it's probably in your best interest to preserve your sanity as much as you can. Some of the pros to doing this are
- The mount
- Several thousand gold
- Enough rep medallions for the golden lotus to get exalted on every alt you could ever make (assuming you are opening the chests with the keys)
- Many crafting mats from Pandaria for every profession
The cons are just obvious symptoms of long and tedious grinds
I've heard that you can also invite party members and friends to a group and so long as they tag Alani then they should also be able to loot the mount, though I haven't tried this yet.
101 Twink Rogue
0 Skyshards to start:
Kill = 1st shard drop
21 Keys put into the chests behind him/her/it = 2nd, 3rd, AND 4th shards drop...
Either rng is a glorious overlord gracing me today or they buffed the drop chance a lot recently.
(Note: I farmed roughly 3k keys back in WoD so I am very fimilar with the old drop rates.)
1000 kills ... 2 skyshards (1 from kill #199 and 1 from a chest just after kill #656) ... *cry*
July 1, 2017. I just got a Skyshard from an Ancient Guo-Lai Cache. So don't throw away those keys!
I guess I was relatively lucky by having to grind
around 5100 kills to pick up all 10 shards. I got three of my shards from chests and rest from mobs. I grinded all of my kills in The Ruins of Guo-Lai; excellent place to run like lunatic and grind mobs over and over again – apart from rather annoying high competition.
If you are going for
I would recommend not to concentrate on shards. Look, drop rate is low and random. You will go insane if you are just running after stupid shards that might need 6k kills just to get even one. Not good. Instead, look for
. Set yourself daily goal of how many you will pick up, like one or two stacks (20 or 40 keys). This way you will be constantly getting
at least something
and you can quite often empty those shiny, golden chests which is rather fun. Just keep going, don't stress too much and you will get those ten shards at some point. But don't grind shards as your primary goal.
makes this grind SIGNIFICANTLY less painful in Legion. I've farmed these on two different characters over several years, with an outcome of 3 on one character and 4 on another after hours and hours of killing things. Draenor was out the last time I tried this, but I figured I'd give it a shot again after consolidating all of the shards onto my current character. I didn't track kills (sorry) but as a rough guess, I'd say I had ~300 kills between drops. I know that's probably on the overall low end of average, but still. It took less than an hour with an instant-cast damage spell (
in my case) to get all of those kills. Having
helped a little bit, but it really wasn’t a critical contributor to kill speed. 3
tonight, and I'm finally done about 6 years after I started this mess.
I have spent 5 HOURS today farming for these damned things. 5 HOURS! I get that some things need some grind time, makes the reward that much sweeter, blah blah blah, but we also have lives. To spend this kind of time and get not ONE is pretty f**king frustrating. I killed untold THOUSANDS of mobs today and got not one Skyshard. According to the odds, I SHOULD have gotten at LEAST 2 or 3. I got NONE. Absolute junk.
I just finished farming my 10th
to get the mount Alani drops. I just started this grind on Monday and made it my mission to do nothing but grind until I got 10 Skyshards. Between Monday and now (Friday the 13th) I logged a total of 12 1/2 hours of farming. I was only farming the Mogu in the North-West area of the Vale near the Guo-Lai Halls. Despite the info I read, I never got a single Skyshard off any rare elites (Although I don't doubt they DO, I just never had any drop off of the 26 that I killed over 5 days) but DID get a lot of
to open up.
Overall, I was able to haul in quite a few valuable mats on top of the end-goal of the mount I finally got this morning. These are the numbers I got from the week, and I posted this to give anybody looking to farm this mount some new, up to date information if they want to try for this beautiful mount.
Mogu killed: 9,917
Mote of Harmony: 605
Windwool Cloth: 6,515
Assorted Greens: 247
Assorted Blues: 9
Total gold looted from mobs and vendor junk: 7,328g
Now, with the
, I used them to go down into the Halls of Guo-Lai and crack open the boxes that are behind Milau. Out of all those boxes, I recovered the following, and this also includes the Treasure of the Vale boxes I got out of those chests;
Spirit of Harmony: 27
Sha Crystal: 5
Imperial Silk: 25
Magnificent Hide: 2
Bolt of Windwool Cloth: 22
Ghost Iron Ore: 415
White Trillium Ore: 22
Black trillium Ore: 23
Spirit Dust: 580
Exotic Leather: 420
Green Tea Leaf: 160
Fools Cap: 120
Snow Lily: 60
Rain Poppy: 40
Golden Lotus: 17
Ancient Pandaren Spices: 209
Aged Mogu'shan Cheese: 261
Aged Balsamic Vinegar: 173
Relic of Guo-Lai: 256
Relic of the Thunder King: 42
That's it! So, as of October 13, 2017, you have a rough idea of how long it should take you acquire this mount. RNG was typical RNG. There was a stretch of 5 hours in which I didn't get a single shard. It also happened twice where I picked up a shard within the first 5 minutes of farming, and it also happened twice that I scored two shards within 10 minutes of each other. Overall, my numbers are 1 shard for every one hour, fifteen minutes of farming. I totally recommend spending them time to farm, as it is a beautiful mount! Good luck!
My two addons KillTrack and Mob Kill Count had me at around 25,000 kills without a shard. That took me around 160 hours. I walked away from the game because of things like this, but every November I come back for a month or so. I read some recent posts suggesting how to grind these and decided wtf, I'll turn it into a game. I'm just concentrating on grinding the gold and doing a basic figure 8. It's all about those keys - once I have around 15, I run down and open the chests as fast as I can. Some chests contain keys too, or its bugged, because 15 keys opened 21 chests. No shards, but 1 finally dropped from the outside mobs. First time in 2 years I shard dropped! Now 8/10 and going to keep at it.
Just got mine. I would say that if you are not a druid, having the Halloween broom for an instant cast mount helps this go much faster. I just farmed the western Vale. Got the shards from the Shao guys, got one from one rare Shao commander , and prob got one from the chests in the Halls. Sometimes I wouldnt get anything for 1 or 2 hrs and sometimes I would get 2 shards within 10 minutes. The chests were not fruitful while gathering the shards but of course after I got my 10th I went to burn up the cache keys and got 2 extra shards that serve no purpose! All in all, it prob took around 15 hrs or more of farming and I ended up with 12 shards. Really, is there nothing for me to do with those other 2? :-( :-(
I have gotten
's mount for myself, sold it to two other people (group up, let them take the mob), and am currently working on my fourth farm, so I can tell you, getting ten Skyshards is monotonous, but don't lose hope if you're having trouble. I'll share my tactics in hopes of lending a hand!
First, I recommend farming Winterbough Glade. There are
s here, and the occasional elite
(supposedly, they do not drop Skyshards, however, but may drop an
, which I will cover later), as well as
s, who travel in packs of four. You can make a rough path through this little area, going back and forth to kill the mobs. At max level, at least with the path I use as well as class (BM hunter), you'll have to wait maybe 30 seconds or so (just a guesstimate) for them to begin respawning with how quickly you can kill them. This is almost exclusively where I've gotten all my shards. Before I move on from the glade, I'll also mention for fellow BM hunters,
comes through this area if you'd like to grab him!
Also, quick note, do NOT miss your Thundermaw kills as they run through the glade. I think I've gotten more from them than I have all other mobs, perhaps because I get four chances in terms of loot. That, or I've just gotten lucky with them.
My second-favorite location to farm are the
. The mobs here have a higher chance of dropping the keys than the glade, and these open
s at the far left end of the halls. Note the mobs here also drop shards, the drop rate is just lower. Personally, I don't go through the entire place; I go to the left corridors and then the room to the right of the entrance with the rare. By the time I get back to the midpoint, the mobs are respawning. The halls aren't a bad place to farm at all, especially considering the caches are a great way to make gold.
Although the page for them oddly enough doesn't claim the caches drop them, I can verify that inside can be a Skyshard; I got two in the same opening session once (not within the
, but the cache itself).
That's about all I can think of to cover. Pick the farming location you think best suits you, turn on some music or something else to keep you sane, and don't give up! The mount (
) is worth it!
I've been grinding rep for the kite string for about two week and just now decided to go looking for what these skyshards do. Pretty much only been grinding the Guo-Lai halls for the Golden lotus and have found six shards this week going through the temple twice and opening what treasure I get keys for.
I'm not sure if they nerfed this but the drop seems pretty low for me. I got only got 3 so far after killing around 6000 and opening 150 chest.
First one - 2498 kills
Second one - 3050 kills
Third one - 150 chest
I have been farming around the Guo-Lai Halls and Ruins of Guo-Lai, not sure if I'm doing something wrong or just really unlucky
The drop rate, as far as I can concern, has not been nerfed.
I received my 7 missing shards all yesterday in about 3-4hrs. (Rarity didn't track the first 20mins without a shard...)
The first three shards were obtained on 3 different characters in about 5hrs of farming. It's not the worst luck but was pretty annoying and I stopped.
So yesterday after finishing the 9999 bone grind I decided to give it another shot.
I started farming on my 110 bm hunter, these were my times, kill counts and percentages of likelihood, as well as mob/chest found in:
#1 - 435 kills (35.29%), 44m23s,
(messed up there and also was farming for 20mins before this so more like 600 kills)
#2 - 451 kills (36.32%), 29m15s,
#3 - 32 kills (3.15%), 1m59s,
#4 - 48 kills (4.69%), 7m0s,
(big camp north-west from the guo-lai halls)
1-3 were in the Guo-Lai Halls.
at this point I switched to my demonhunter to avoid farming boredom and for added mobility.
#5 - 90 kills (8.61%), 5m57s,
#6 - 906 kills (59.6%), 1h14m45s,
#7 - 303 kills (26.15%), 19m17s,
All in all:
2266 kills, 3h 2m 41s, 7 shards found (without untracked farming)
If you're getting frustrated just take a break (mine was a year long) and start again when you feel like it.
Good farming and may the shards be in your favor!
So. I've got most of the shards from Ancient Guo-Lai Cache
I was farming these for 3 hours and got from mobs only one shard. But all other 3 that I was missing came from Cache. So try to farm as many keys as possible i guess.
I had gathered 4 of these during Pandaria itself. I figured I'd never get enough. Well, having taken 2 weeks off at Christmas, I figured I'd go for the last six. Turns out, 4 of the Shards were in
. So I killed as many Shao Tien as I could, got about 20 keys, went into Guo-Lai Halls, and opened every
I could (plus killed whatever was there for more keys). In total, took about 10 hours to get all my shards and now I have a pink dragon! :)
Has anyone else had these shards vanish from your bank/bags? I had four and while looking through my bank today they're all gone. This is actually the second time it has happened. The first time I had one or two and came back after an extended break to find them gone. I though well, maybe I trashed them. I farmed a bit a while ago, got a few to drop and threw them in the bank for "safe" keeping. Gone again and I am 100% sure I didn't delete them (I honestly don't think I did the first time but still..). This is a bummer for sure.
I've only recently started farming this. My first shard dropped from Shao-tien warrior, second and third are both from treasure boxes inside Go lai temple. Maybe they've increased the drop rate for this somehow? Good luck to everyone who is still hunting for shards.
I have 6 already. I just started farming again, killed like 8k mobs and opened lotw osf boxis but still not drop :(
Found 2 from reasure last night and 2 (one from drop, the other is from treasure) this morning :)
SO I have Alani too already /cheer
Along with recent commenters, I also carefully suggest that the drop rate for shards has been tweaked in the player's favor. And not just shards.
I remember trying to do this last year on a different account and just giving up after putting in serious hours.
This time around, different story: chest keys drop faster, but, much more interesting, 80+ chests only gave me three shards. The rest came from the mobs!
Took me somewhere around 6, maybe 7, hours.
Hello everyone !
I can with safe answer here and as i have done 5 x 10 skyshards farmed , that u dont earn shards from the blue boxes u can get from rares and within chests.
Insteed u get the skyshards from chest-loot in additional from the key u get from killing mobs. and u as i counted in the farming is that u get aprox 1 shard eatch 2 hour , can be lycky to get more thanks to the RNG , i had real luck on the 2nd time i farmed 10 shards that i got 2 shards from same mob group at kill, but that is pure luck.
if u farming this , think on that u must have time! this @#$% is RNG in its purest form! . :)
about 11~12 hours total play time
(over 3 days) to farm all 10 shards. I'd argue the drop rate has increased for
significantly based on comments and things i've heard from friends.. but i can't confirm as this is my first time farming them.
After getting my 4th shard, i noticed the drop rate for keys decrease significantly. From about 9-10 keys per hour to about 2-3 keys an hour consistently for the rest of the farm.
I had the most success for shards inside of
. 3 came from caches, 6 came from mobs inside of the halls (most were bulk pulls so i wasn't sure which mob dropped them but one of them definitely came from the Shao-Tien Dominator that paces the stairs at 30, 46.75), and 2 came from the mogu
of Guo-Lai Halls.
- In hour 1, my first two drops came off of mobs inside the halls within 10 minutes of each other.
- In hour 2, drops three and four were back to back from caches right next to each other inside of the Guo-Lai Vault.
- In hours 3-7, drops five, six, and seven came from mobs inside of the halls, the room before the vault.
- In hour 10, drop 8 came from mobs immediately outside of the halls at (21, 30)
- In hour 11, drop 9 came from a cache inside of the Guo-Lai Vault, and drop 10 came from a group of mobs at Autumnshade Ridge (14.78, 35.44).
Things of note:
1. Have a vendor mount. Seriously. You're gonna need to clear bags of a lot of trash often.
2. I found more success for
drops outside of the Halls than in them. I think ultimatley
you farm the mogu mobs is just preference.
3. All of the cache drops i had came from the caches on the
left side of Guo-Lai Vault
as you come up the stairs. (48.13, 26.12)
4. The ritual chamber inside the halls is basically useless unless you're killing time for respawns. Going between the entrance and the vault is really just the best bang for your buck. (go outside to farm when you get bored or want more keys)
5. If you aren't already exalted with Golden Lotus, you will be after this. Tons of relics (
Relic of the Thunder King
Relic of Guo-Lai
) which you can send to other toons when you're maxed. Just as a bonus.
6. As others have mentioned, shards don't drop from
7. Don't waste your time trying to find Trickster mobs, they don't exist anymore.
8. Also as others have mentioned, take breaks if you need them. Honestly. The current grind isn't that bad, especially if you break it up over a few days.. But there's no point if you're not having fun.
(Edited to remove the last bit of note #2 about 'not seeing any places having more success than others' when i specifically mention twice in my summary where i happened to have the most success. Seemed silly to keep a contradictory statement. I was tired when i wrote this. I still standby the rest of #2 about where you farm probably just being preference. I think i had a lot of success in The Halls because that's where i farmed for the majority because of the ease of it.)
As if it was not enough farming, now we got one more similar bunch of crystals to farm:
, this time from BfA mobs.
I looted a
from one of the
and is so far the only I've found even after hours of farming. It was in the Gou-Lai Vault (48,28) entrance to
is at (23, 27) in
Vale of Eternal Blossoms
.The caches do require a
to open. I have not had another looted since so the rate is likely very low. Still I haven't seen any info regarding this , so thought I'd pass it along. Am currently trying to reproduce the drop and will update when I can.
Update! Had another drop from a cache today. Confirming they do indeed drop from caches.
For anyone wanting to farm the shards for this mount. Here's a little taste of what's in store:
Total amount of time it took me to grind, non stop: 7 Hours 3 Minutes
Source of shards from mob drops: 6
Source of shards from
Amount of Mogu killed: Too many
Amount of keys used: 98
Gold aquired from loot: 8568g
And a whole bunch of xmog I didn't bother counting.
BFA: Patch 8.0.1 - 21st October 2018
After finally finishing my last 4 Skyshards, i had the strong feeling that you have a much higher chance on getting them in those Ancient Guo-Lai Caches then killing mobs.
I got 3 from from the chests and 1 from the mogu mobs.
I read everyone's experience from the new drop rate and decided to try it since I already had 5 Skyshard's from Pandaria's time before the extreme nerf.
Needless to say I had the complete opposite experience of everyone I farmed 92 Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Keys and got no shards from the chests.
Meantime I looted the 5 Skyshards I needed from the mobs in about 6 hours while farming for the keys. I found staying in one spot yield me better/faster drops so I just picked a spot each day away from other farmers and stuck to it since respawns are fairly fast. I say each day as I only farmed about a couple hours a day to have time for other things.
I think this proves everyone will have different results just find what works for you.
Total grind time: ~6 Hours
Number of Mogu killed: idk
Skyshards from mobs: 5
Skyshards from Ancient Guo-Lai Cache:0
Amount of keys used: 92
Gold made: 10452g 96s 69c
Total xmog : 30 including, 3 rare blues and 1 epic BOE
BFA: Patch 8.0.1 Jan 2019
I was grinding these the other day, and ended up with a multitude of Guo Lai Cache Keys.
I opened about 40 boxes that day, and I'd just like to confirm that as of 2019, the Caches do drop skyshards, just at a very low rate.
Farmed ten of these in no more than 18 hours, moving counter-clockwise, rotating between mobs in
, mount up, SW to
Ruins of Guo-Lai
, mount up, WSW to
, ESE to
The Five Sisters
, north then east to
Ruins of Guo-Lai
, southeast to
, mount, back north through
Ruins of Guo-Lai
and starting the circuit again with
dropped from mobs, and five were acquired from
Ancient Guo-Lai Cache
, using approximately 100
Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Key
. Sorry I don't have exact numbers as I did not keep track.
helped tremendously. As noted, I mounted three times during one rotation. I received no
Treasures of the Vale
. I made an attempt to best describe my farming rotation, as some people have a hard time making these drops, and I seemed to complete this farm in a relatively swift and painless manner. 19/07/2019 Kil'Jaeden Horde. Best of luck
A couple days ago I started farming this again while Alani was circling overhead. I got two Skyshards within about twenty minutes. Can anyone confirm if the drop rate increases when Alani is present? Or if that's the only time when the Skyshards are even available? Thank you! <3
I can confirm that the mobs affected by the Black Empire assaults will also drop Skyshards. This doesn't come too much as a surprise, considering the older materials also drop. But it's nice to know there's that little bonus potential while doing your daily grinds in 8.3. There's some good areas to farm (the underground area where Vil'raxx is, for example).
Just got one from an N'Zoth Assault mob
You can see here I loot a skyshard among a Tome of Ancient Madness
I just looted one from a Fleshbeast from a Black Empire assault in the Vale so yes - it seems that they can drop with the new mobs introduced in 8.3!
FYI As of 8.3, Skyshards can drop from at the very least the mobs that are part of the Major Assault by N'Zoth.
They still drop even in the corrupted version of the zones in 8.3 from Black Empire mobs
Also got one from within the daily Lesser Visions of N'Zoth from the mobs in the Shrine of the Seven Stars.
I've only even gotten 2 of these during MoP dailies at the time. 2 more in 3 days of dailies in 8.3. Here's hoping RNGsus gives me a few more this expansion. I'd probably be willing to grind it out if it comes to a point that I'd only need 2-3 more.
I had a skyshard drop for me in a BFA patch 8.3 horrific vision in Pandaria. I'm not sure which mob type it came from. It was on the upper level near where the flight point would be in the alliance base.
Never really farmed these during MoP, now I have a 9th taking up a bag slot for who knows how many years waiting for a final friend.
18 Jan 2020, Skyshard drops from the N'Zoth assault zone of Vale of Eternal Blossoms; unsure if you will need to revert to old pandaria when sky crystal is created.
SO 8.3 Pro-Tip here. You CAN in fact get these from N'Zoth mobs in the Vale. I have by no means compiled a list of which creatures all drop them / how much they drop / etc. However I have had 1 Sky Shard drop for my Rogue, and 1 for my Druid, since 8.3 launched. Both were off Living Infestation mobs (the fleshbeasts). I have yet to be able to confirm if it's just these little guys, or others too, but it definitely works to some degree.
I drop a skyshard during the Lesser Vision in the Vale of Eternal Blossom from a N'zoth rare... O_o
This has just dropped from one of the K'Thir mobs inside the Vale of Eternal Twilight (a.k.a the Lesser Horrific Vision); that's an alternate world in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. The N'Zoth Assaults was active.
these are dropping in 8.3 from invasion mobs
Got one from a
in 8.3 version of the vale.
Can still drop in 8.3, during the N'zoth assaults.
I just had one of these drop for me in one of the new (minor) visions, to my big surprise.
I just got one of these doing the Minion of N'zoth quest daily in the lesser vision in Uldum.
I can confirm as of patch 8.3 that these still drop in the new vale. I just got one a few minutes ago from a
while doing a daily quest.
8.3 patch, had a Skyshard drop within the mini horific visions daily place from a normal panda person inside
I can confirm that the
does still drop from the npc's in
Vale of Eternal Blossoms
even during an Assault, I had three drop from Mantid mobs and one drop from N'Zoth mobs.
A quick update on the Skyshards, they do in fact still drop from the mobs in the New Vale, so there is no need to roll back time to farm them, i got one last night from killing the rarespawn Quid!
Just thought this info would be useful for someone out there, happy hunting :-)
Can confirm that as of 8.3, these also drop inside mini-Horrific Visions, the daily version. I however, was not paying attention to what it dropped from, but my addon CollectMe said "Found after 5 attempts," so it maybe from a rare that spawns in visions, or the bigger dudes at least.
Already about a million comments to this effect, but just adding my example to the pile that these can drop in the 8.3 version of the Vale. Mine dropped from a
during a Mogu Invasion (one of the minor invasions). I had finished the invasion but not yet turned in the quest.
Confirming these DO still drop from the 120 level beasts added in 8.3 for the N'Zoth stuff.
I just had a Skyshard drop for me in the Daily Vision in Uldum off of a faceless mob?
Anyone know the going rate for buying/selling this mount & does it still work the same way as it used to?(everyone in the party gets the mount)
I'm sure nobody, including blizzard, cares about the overall game experience anymore but i finally got one of these to drop after 8 ****ing Years.
I'm all for grinding my face against this game for the last 15+ years but i'm not sure if i'm more annoyed at these or Curious Coins. These mounts arent even that nice looking.
Blizzard has nerfed the Quilen farming at the Golden Stair this past week. They no longer are lootable - you can only mine them for ore and vendor junk.
I confirm these drop from the N'Zoth version of the vale. I got one from a mogu and one from an onyx warserpent.
I spent a year farming these to get the mount back in the day. Today I randomly (and surprisingly) had two drop in the 120 Pandaren invasion while grinding
. After reading that the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent is now BOE and seeing that the skyshards are apparently dropping less than once a month, I feel more than a little disappointed considering how much time I invested into getting this originally.
Can confirm these can still drop in the vale during an N'zoth invasion, from the invasion mobs!
Just got one from a Faceless Manipulator in a Lesser Vision -- in Uldum!
Can anybody confirm that these still drop in the old version of the Vale? During Pand I collected all 10 shards in around 5000 kills. As of 8.3 I've had 2300 kills with not one shard.
These can drop from
Lesser Visions as well.
I just had one of these drop within a Lesser Visions of N'Zoth in Uldum, which isn't in Pandaria. I guess that's nice that it's not just during the Lesser Visions of N'Zoth in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
Anyone able to confirm that it still drops in old Vale in patch 9.0.1? Killed over 1400 mobs and have yet to get my first one..
Almost positive this does not drop from pre-BFA Vale any longer. Farmed like 600 kills and got nada.
I have gotten more shards since they opened the *corruption* vale than all the grinding I did in Pandaria. If you're high level and high corruption avoidance - u can farm the Vision. I got most of mine running thru the slime piles in the building (which summons the elite slime eventually)
Had 2 drop in 10 minutes from Shao-Tien mobs in the entire North-Western corner of Vale of Eternal Blossoms. They definitely drop. Farming those mobs for all 10 shards
bring you to exalted rep with the Golden Lotus if you have no rep to start with, which unlocks the Azure, Regal and Golden Riding Cranes for purchase.
No need to fight anymore. Once you have your 10th Skyshard; follow Alani to a place where you can channel the Sky Crystal at him/her. Once you start channeling, the Mount drops in your bag and Alani flies away & despawns.
If you're deadset on farming this in Shadowlands, I recommend unlocking BfA assaults and going to the new Vale, farming Zan-Tien mobs on "The Golden Stair".
Could just be bad luck, but after clearing Guo-Lai Halls, Ruins and Winterbough Glade for more than three hours, opening more caches than I cared to count without a single drop, I gave up and went to farm the Zan-Tien Lasso for the Ivory serpent.
Two shards within 1½ hour, and then the lasso dropped. Went and got my serpent, but I'll probably farm the remaining 8 shards there sometime, seems much faster.
Again, could just be bad RNG.
