I farmed one of these for a friend, and doing so took me a good half an hour. The key is to know which ones drop it. They drop from the Red and Crimson Whelps, not the others. If you are lucky enough to get one faster than I, good job. If not, dont worry, it will drop eventually.

Don't use it as a pet, unless you are very rich already. These little guys sell for around 100g or perhaps more, depending on the realm, at the AH.

Tiny Crimson Whelplings have been farmed ALOT in the past. Most often by new "grinders" due to the fact they sell for a pretty penny on the AH. Although as many have found, this is not the best way to make quick money.

While not really worth the time if you are looking for easy gold, it is definetly a status item to have. I got my red one after just 30 min grinding (yes I know its random) and used it directly, didnt regret a thing.
Everyone should own their own Eyonix that can fly beside you and tell you all the nerfs you will suffer. (No it doesnt do that)

There is no competition to kill the whelping and they are somewhat fun to kill. I used the route Seg Recommended and it's good for killing quickly. Lets hope one drops soon,.

I think that blue post overestimates the rarity of these, as I spent a day farming the whelplings yesterday, i farmed and killed 112 of the assorted dragonkins in azshara yesterday before I finally had one drop for me, took a while largely because of the layout of the camps of dragons.
I farmed 65 whelps in wetlands before a drop, only to have a second one drop about 2 mobs later.
Dark Whelpling dropped for me on the 10th whelp in the badlands, I wouldnt bother with the dustwallow marsh one, its too problematic farming it there, because of wide ranging spawn points.
Still Farming the emerald one at this stage, which is indeed problematic because of the fact that dreaming whelps do not have a static spawn point in SoS, but ill get there :)

The low level of the mobs that can drop this make it the easiest to farm for. This guy is a bit rarer on Horde side due to being a drop off select whelps in Wetlands only. A few months ago I was farming the red whelp scales after finding the glove pattern on neutral AH when much to my surprise some 200 kills later this cutie dropped! Makes an appearance on horde AH every now and then but after recent patches pet collectors are more interested in the Azure Whelpling.

It took me about 15 minutes and 62 dead dragons to get my pet. I am currently working on getting another, but haven't kept count this round. I guesstimate that I am around 60 atm. I just kept making a circle around the area these mobs are found in and once I made a complete circuit they had respawned.
I also noted that the dragons that drop the pet tend to stay in the back of the area, the farther from the mountains you get the more likely the dragon you kill will be a Lost Welp, and will not drop the pet.

I've started farming these whelps at lvl 27 on my rogue. I'm almost lvl 34 now and they're turning gray. Almost 7 levels of pure whelp genocide and still no pet. :( I don't have mobinfo running but based on xp per level and the xp per mobs i've estimated i've killed ~2500+ whelps although those numbers might be off now that some of them are no longer giving xp. Not going to lie when I say I'm jealous of the 'ooh got it in 20 minutes' people.
*update* I completely outleveled the whelps on my rogue so I ran my 26 priest alt out there and continued the massacre. My priest is 28 1/2 now and still no pet. Maybe today will be my lucky day...

One way to look at it is like this. You can either spend countless hours farming for this drop, or (assuming you are lvl 70) you can do 25 dailies that will pay you at least 200g per day and just buy one at the AH. This should take you anywhere from 3-4 hours per day by the time you factor in traveling around the various zones.
Considering that the Wowhead average Buyout price for this item is 450g you should be able to earn enough to buy one within a couple of days, which is probably a lot less time than you will spend farming the mobs that drop it. Personally if I can guarantee myself one without ever having to kill a whelp I think I would prefer that to the alternative.
IMO, it's all about how you choose to invest your playtime. Some people are willing to grind endlessly to get the item for free, or may think that buying one is not as much "fun" as grinding for one, however the time spent grinding is unlikely to pay as well as the dailies would over the same period of time and doing the dailies provides other benefits such as faction rep, quest rewards, etc.

The only problem with the above idea, is just because wowhead lists and average price doesn't mean it'll get sold for that. I just spent a day grinding blue dragons and finally got the azure drake, because the one that was in the AH was 1800g. Im not gonna spend that much on a mini pet, and i also made 200 gold from grinding those dragons so at least it was a complete waste of time.
评论来自
99641
I'll start by saying they run about 1000g or so on my server, sometimes more, so you can't base anything off wowhead's average price. It can sometimes be a LOT more.
Secondly...the whelps are rare. Very rare. So rare, in fact, you can't "farm" your AH for one and just buy one when you see it. Mostly because...that means there has to be one up there. I play on a high pop server, and I haven't seen a whelpling on the AH since late June.
Its now mid August.

I just finished farming this pet with my 62 mage on Skullcrusher and hoped that I could give some friendly advice for any other hopefuls.
I'll repeat again that the
Lost Whelps DO NOT
drop this pet, but eventually you'll start seeing a lot of Lost Whelps as you farm and less of the Whelps that you DO need to kill. I went in circles around the whelp spawning area and ignored the Lost Whelps. Every 3rd or 4th circle I'd notice that I'd start to see more Lost Whelps in certain areas and would quickly kill them off all at once because they are said to share spawn spots with the other whelps. Take advantage of this mindless killing and utilize your trade skills while farming. Herbalists, take note that there are a few Briarthorn spawns that have a chance to also drop Swifthisle which tends to sell well on the AH. There are also multiple veins for miners, not to mention Skinners who will be up to their heads in Whelp Scales by the time they've gotten their pet.
Once you've finished farming your whelp you will probably have many useful items that you can either use yourself or put on the Auction House to make some money. I recommend getting the Auctioneer addon and performing a full scan of the Auction House to build your database. You can then use the Appraiser feature (in conjunction with some common sense and double checking) to find the fair price for your goods.
I started running out of bagspace after all the Uncommon items I collected and didn't really feel like making a trip to the bank, so I only kept Small Flame Sacs and any gear drops. I have heard that items tend to sell for more when they are in limited quantity, so if you're looking to make more money, keep as much of your inventory in your bank while putting 1 or 2 stacks of each item on the AH at a time.
I've refrained from divulging the # of kills I made up until now because my results are independent of everyone else's. However, I know there are curious people out there that would appreciate some anecdotal evidence so here are the stats for my farming run for the Tiny Crimson Whelp. This is purely for interest and has no bearing on your results, ALL Whelps have a .1% independent chance to drop on eligible mobs, this is determined when the mob is created on the server, not when the mob has been killed. Just because you kill 1000 doesn't mean you're guaranteed a whelp. (I didn't keep track by hand, I suggest
MobInfo2
if you'd like to keep your own stats)
Total Killed
Flamesnorting : 100
Flamesnorting : 91
Red Whelp : 129
Red Whelp : 124
Crimson Whelp : 186
Crimson Whelp : 205
Total: 835
Drop Rate: 1/835 ~ .1197%
Additional Mobs Killed
Lost Whelp : 85
Lost Whelp : 92
Adjusted Total: 1012
Adjusted Drop Rate: 1/1012 ~ .0988%
After killing 835 eligble mobs, my chance of getting 1 or more whelps with a .1% chance to drop is roughly 57% (Note that this is different than the drop rate, they are two different measurements). I see a lot of people on this site and others that say the following formula describes the probability that you'll get a drop after N attempts,
this formula is WRONG
: P(outcome) = 1 - (1 - P(event))^N
In fact, what you are experiencing when farming for this pet or any other item with a drop rate is a form of a Bernoulli Trial, which can be described by a
Binomial Distribution
. The formula for estimating probability of success after
N
trials is MUCH more complicated than the previous formula and thus I won't post it because I do not have access to proper formatting. However, you can find it on the Wiki page or just use a
calculator
to see where you're standing. Obviously, the more you kill the better your odds overall, but like others have said, there are no guarantees in life except for death; you could farm forever and never get this. If that's the case, sucks to be you :/
Best of luck in your endeavor and don't give up! Statistically speaking you're pretty much bound to get it if you keep killing, it is just a matter of time and patience. All told I spent roughly 7 hours farming this mob over two days. Definitely worth it if you
get
pet collecting. It is very easy to farm this and watch TV if you are of a significantly higher level than the zone.

If your farming this and want to sell those greys and greens that fill up your bag there is a neutral vendor not to far from where the whelps are right at the closest fork in the road for those who want to make some extra gold.

I just finished farming for this. Took about 20 hours played, and just over 2200 kills of the mobs that can drop it.
I never see these on the AH at all. On our server any whelps that do show up go for over 1500g. The daily quest gold inflation makes these work a lot more than they used to be.

He dropped off a Red Whelp. The only advice I can give: go in a circuit. Red Whelps tend to spawn closer to the river, so you can wipe those out, head north and take a right and go south, killing the Crimson and Flamesnorting Whelps, hang a right, rinse and repeat.

So I began to farm these little guys last night after I saw the Azure one on the AH with 2000g BO. My girlfriend likes to collect pets so I thought I might make her a small surprise. I started in Azshara and farmed for 2h and a half. Meanwhile my girlfriend found out I was farming the whelplings and she killed some of them too.It was late (4 a.m.) and I wanted to go to bed but still farmed them and got the Azure lil' guy. My gf logged on, I gave her the pet and TA NA. He's so cute..
Now I'm in Wetlands for the next one. Killed 600 and still didn't got it. No prob, I'll stick on it :D. About me.. I'm a warlock. Found out that the easiest way to kill them is by single Immolate-them. If i crit , they die instantly. I stick with Immolate because the Lost ones (yeah, I know they don't drop the pet) are immune to shadow and I killed some of them. Still Immolate has the best DPCT (damage per cast time) in this situation.
One more thing, if u want to skill a weapon thats the place... just immolate and then use wand, dagger or anything you can on them once or twice.
Also, I must say I love the Broom from the Halloween event - you can mount it instantly and go to the next mob. Too bad mine last 2 more days:.
Last thing.. i have this lvl 65 shammy also and went with him to Swamp of Sorrows for the Emerald one. I just log with him from time to time and kill the 2-6 Dreaming Whelps, maybe the pet drops.
Some may say its crazy to farm these pets but.. I like it.. I rather farm this guys than killing Illidan for the 20-30th time...
I hope you enjoyed reading! Cheers!

Started farming for this last night and after 449 kills it dropped. There are lots of mobs about so you are never waiting for respawns.
As the pet isn't BOP I farmed it with my mage just spaming ice lance (as the mobs are sometimes spread apart) and then mailed it to my warrior.

Stuff I learned from the three days I spent farming this guy:
- If you have a level 50+ hunter, then use that character to farm with. Track Dragonkin is very helpful. You can see on your minimap where the whelps are and which ones are Lost Whelps so you know to avoid them. That plus Aspect of the Cheetah makes things super fast. Just be sure not to let your pet kill things on his own, or you won't be able to loot the whelp. And if your hunter has skinning, as many do, then that's a huge bonus!
- If you are using a 70 hunter use cheap arrows, you don't need to dump all your expensive Mysterious/Timeless Arrows into this.
- There seem to be less Lost Whelps up north by the entrance to Grim Batol, where all the elites are.
- If you have a friend with an alt in their mid-20s or so and are willing to help 'em out a bit, let them /follow you around (they don't even have to be at the computer) and soak up the XP. Again, best done if you are a hunter for Aspect of the Pack.
- Please be courteous when farming these, I ran into many other 70s when I was there who were obviously farming the same thing and while I met some who graciously let me stay in my spot while they stayed in theirs, there were others who would very obviously go after the ones I was heading for next or try to get an attack in first even though I was about to attack it myself-- this is simply not good form. If you see another 70 going after a whelp that is in front of their face and not yours, please don't shoot/fireball/moonfire/etc. it. WoW Karma, folks.
Good luck all! <3

I just got mine today and only after a long 1&1/2 hrs of farming for it :D This is great to farm for if you want it as a pet, and does sell for quite alot on my server (I used mine as soon as I got it!), but I have been farming the other 3 for quite awhile now.... with a 2% drop rate you really could farm these for days weeks or a year and not get them all.... I just got lucky on this one! Good luck to you all who are tying to get this awsome pet!

This was my first serious attempt at farming for a Non combat pet. My sister had one on another character and I wanted that skunk. So popped onto my 70 warlock and hit up wetlands. friend of mine was on vent and decided to try for a green whelp at the same time
after about 4-5 circuits and several fights with an alliance S-priest, I got my whelp right when my friend starts complaining about his drop rate. I lol'd.
took say, 3 hours? this is defiantly a good starting option for aspiring pet grinders!

i was rather pleased as you can imagine :D

I still don´t have it after 3 days farming for 4 hours aprox. each day, but the funny thing tough was on the third day of my farming, 3 Dk´s and one lowly hunter appeared and started to farm them as well.
Im wondering why, all of a suden , this pet became so heavily farmed, specially by the new flavor of the month , Dk´s.
Off course I was taking advantage, because I was doing circuits farming with my druid, spamming moonfire and hoping on my travel form, still, it´s just not fair having your mob´s stealed by those FoTM, tough.
Im off to farm the azure, and then the emerald one untill Wetlands can be mine again :(

Just wanted to reiterate that you should not be killing the lost whelps. They do not take up spawn spots from the whelps that drop it. There are three "bands" of whelps. The Red Whelp band, the Lost Whelp band, and then the Crimson/Flamesnorting Whelp band. Just run in a circle around the Lost Whelp band to maximize your time. Good luck!

I farmed for about 3 hrs, killed approx. 800 whelps (going off my arrow count) and there he was! I was clearing the left spawn area and was about to call it a night after a few more kills, I'm glad I hung in there. Now time to farm for the Emerald Whelping :(, after that my collection of whelps will be COMPLETE :-p.

the crimson whelpling pet drops off three whelps, the flamesnorting whelp the crimson whelp and the red whelp. all three of them roam the mountions in the north-east of wetlands. lost whelps do not carry the whelpling. put aside several hours a day if you want this pet (or several thousand in gold). i got mine from a flamesnorting whelp. pulled it out and instantly fell in love with it. not exactly easy money but it should give you a pay out of 1-3 or 4 thousand in gold. good pet rare i have never met anyone else on my server with this whelp

I was in Wetlands to get the discovery achievement for Wetlands and I remembered that the drakes drop a pet drake so I thought I might kill some for the duration of my MotW buff and I went into the typical grind mode where you don't really look at your loot window and just loot and run off to the next one to kill more and I saw something in the loot window and went like "what was that". Looked at the loot in the chat log and saw it, Tiny Crimson Whelpling. I skinned them all and I got 45 skins so that's all I had to kill to get it :) just some good luck I guess ^^

There is a sad thing about farming this thing.
About seven months back, I was bored on my 70 Hunter, and decided to go farm for whelplings. I spent ten hours farming the Emerald ones and never got a whelp.
Went for the Dark ones, not a single drop in about 3000 kills.
I went in the Wetlands, in the end, and I got about five whelps in less than 6 hours.
Talk about statistics ?
The sad part is they weren't worth more than 300G each on Blood Furnace, though I have no idea what their value is as of now.

The past month, I got the Azure Whelp, the Crimson Whelp and the Dark Whelp. This is how I did it.
For well over a week for about 3 hours a day, I was farming the Crimson Whelp in the Wetlands with no luck. I decided to go to Azshara to try for the Azure and got it in a half hour. Go figure. So then, I decided to go back and try for the Crimson. I farmed for another 3 hours - nothing. The next day, I went back and got it within 10 minutes from a Red Whelpling. Then, I decided to try for the Dark Whelp. This one took me almost 2 weeks to get. Again, I was at it for about 3 hours a day. Eventually, I gave up for a few days. Went back, got it on the
very
first kill - no lie. All 3 places are one big circle. I would recommend getting 2 or 3 together to make it a little faster. I used 2 of my characters to farm these, my 72 mage and my 56 rogue. Just have patience, these farms
will
get frustrating!
-Crimson Whelp drops from Red, Crimson or Flamesnorting Whelplings in Wetlands - lvl 23-27
-Dark Whelp drops from the Scalding Whelplings in the Badlands - lvl 41-43, or Searing Whelplings in Duskwallow Marsh - lvl 39-40
-Azure Whelp drops from Draconic Magelord, Blue Scalebane, Draconic Mageweaver and Blue Dragonspawn in Azshara - all lvl 50-54 elite
-Emerald drops from the Dreaming Whelplings in Swamp of Sorrows - lvl 35-36
Hope this helps! Good luck and happy farming!

I have 30 pets but no whelplings as making money at the mo is my priority.
I started killing the flamesnorting, crimson and red whelps knowing full well lost whelps dont drop them, and that red whelps have the highest drop rating.
I was about 50 kills in when i got mine ...which didn't take long being a level 65 with one hit kills.
I wasn't paying attention to what i was killing, but i at least know it was either a crimson or flamesnorting whelp.
I sold it for 1200gold at the AH. An easy 1k for me!

I farmed for this guy on my 70 mage pre-patch 3.0, fire specced, could kill most of them in two scorches or a fire blast crit. Took me 6 hours in total, went around in circles until I could have sworn I was getting dizzy.
However, this guy is so cute that he's totally worth the grind. I'm still thinking of making time for the azure and emerald ones. All in all, don't give up, this guy is worth the week-long grind(if you had to do that!)

After killing 835 eligble mobs, my chance of getting 1 or more whelps with a .1% chance to drop is roughly 57% (Note that this is different than the drop rate, they are two different measurements). I see a lot of people on this site and others that say the following formula describes the probability that you'll get a drop after N attempts, this formula is WRONG: P(outcome) = 1 - (1 - P(event))^N
In fact, what you are experiencing when farming for this pet or any other item with a drop rate is a form of a Bernoulli Trial, which can be described by a Binomial Distribution. The formula for estimating probability of success after N trials is MUCH more complicated than the previous formula and thus I won't post it because I do not have access to proper formatting.
Feel free to ignore this spew. He's dead wrong, and the previous forumla he sited as being incorrect IS completely correct. I won't bother throwing out credentials because some ignorant sod would either not believe them, make up credentials they have to sound more convincing, or have equal or better credentials and STILL be wrong,
The probability of the item NOT dropping over N trials is simply using the probability of independant events. P(A and B) = P(A) x P(B). But in this case instead of two trials, A and B, we have N trials P(E1) x P(E2) x ... x P(En). Each trial has the same probability which is 1-.001 (since we're tracking the proability of the event NOT occuring.)
That then simplifies to (1-.001)^N. Since the event can either occur, or not occur, the probability of it occuring is 1 - (1-.001)^N. Which is the correct forumla.
The binomial distriubtion formula is only useful if you want to calculate the probability of an event occuring X times over Y trials where X is a specific value > 1. ie, what's the probability that I'll get 4 whelplings after 1000 kills? vs what's the probability that I'll get ANY whelplings after 1000 kills (maybe 1, maybe 2, maybe 5).
The second question is drastically more useful to most readers since they're not trying to get more than one whelpling.
Wow I hate bad statistics.

I got this pet yesterday after about 6-7 hours of farming, off of a Flamesnorting Whelp.
Here's some quick pointers for people going after this pet:
As you probably know, there are 4 Whelps hanging out around the general area.
Red Whelps: Melee Type Mobs. They have an ability called Flame Last that lowers fire resistance, but it shouldn't give you much trouble.
Crimson Whelps: Like Red Whelps, but with a Flame Shield effect that deals damage every time you hit it. Again, not much trouble.
Flamesnorting Whelps: Caster Mobs that stand still and attack primarily with Fireballs. Again, not much trouble
And Lost Whelps. Lost Whelps are identical to Flamesnorting Whelps, except they are immune to Fire and Shadow damage, and
DO NOT DROP THE PET
. However, you can avoid these without much trouble.
The method I used was a lap system. Starting near the Greenwarden NPC, I did several laps around the area, going from Whelp to Whelp. It's very intuitive, as after a few laps you begin forming invisible boundaries in your head.
By the time you get within sight of the Greenwarden, the whelps should have respawned. If they haven't, wait a minute or so.
You can skip over the lost whelps completely. I did not notice a shortage of other whelps while avoiding the Lost ones. I'll hazard a guess and say it's easier just to ignore the Lost Whelps.
Fairly easy as a level 37 Tauren Rogue, if a bit time consuming.

Finally dropped for me from a Red Whelp near the hill next to Rethiel the Greenwarden, after farming for about 8 hours on and off (~900 kills). By far the worst "track" of all the whelp grinds imho. I rotated between Wetlands and the Badlands (for the Dark Whelpling). Of course, it only dropped when I had my annoying brother in my earhole taking my mind off the drops as I mindlessly slaughter the little guys. For real, they always come the moment you're mind lets go of it...
..And after you empty the loot table of everything they have to offer. I had at least 50 greens, and one BoE blue drop. Not to mention tons of small flames sacs.
Dark Whelpling has thus far eluded capture, but he's on notice :)

After literally years of off-and-on attempts over numerous characters, one of these suckers finally dropped for me.
I can't even count how many whelps I had to slaughter, but this most recent install of Beast Info had me at about:
84 Lost Whelps (they were in my way)
102 Flamesnorting Whelps
241 Crimson Whelps
128 Red Whelps
That doesn't count the hundreds that fell before me in previous attempts over the past few years.
Along the way, of course, I picked up a number of greens, some gems, and plenty of flame sacs. But all I care about is that 1 whelping that means I never have to bother with these flying rats again... hopefully.
Good luck to those who persist. I like this area because there's a lot of possible whelps to kill, they're trivial for a level 80, and it's spread out but accessible.

Got one previously while levelling skinning on my shaman in puppy form, just one shotting and running off, didn't expect to get it after 15mins since it never drops.
Tried to get another one last night on my Death Knight, took about 1-2 hours but eventually got it, you can do circles around the area and the whelps spawn fairly fast so you could have spawned one with it and run off away to kill others and hope no ones killed any!
It's a big area to farm, it reminds me of the number 8, there's 2 *circles* of whelps and they seem to spawn a few times in that circle then you go to the other area and do a few circles of it before there's none, then go back to the other end..
Unholy aura and icey touch was pretty much all I'd use, only the cromson whelps weren't immune to deathcoil either, maybe flamesnorting too.
Good luck!

THIS WELL HELP YOU!
Make a macro saying
/target Red Whelp
/target Crimson Whelp
/target Flamesnorting
Sold this for 1000g recently, could have waited out for more but didn't feel like it.
Also, the chance of you killing one monster and it dropping is ALWAYS going to be 0.1% but...
If you kill 1,000 then you have a 36.7% (0.999^1000) chance of not getting it, or a 63.3% chance of getting one, so DONT GIVE UP!
I got this item after 1073 kills and around 4hrs of farming. This macro saved me loads of looking time.

I've probablly farmed enough gold in the process to purchase him off the auction house but I'm determined to stick it out until the little darling is ready to be adopted into in his new loving home. After that happens, I'll start working on the other whelplings with the hope of a speedier reward, either that or a whole lot more patience. Good luck everyone.

Got it just now after about 30 kills, though some were the Lost Whelplings. Damn lucky, makes me glad since I've killed around 2000 mobs for the black one. Still nothing! But red, yes!
On another note, I am getting increasingly annoyed by the botters farming these and the blue ones in Azhara. Still haven't seen any where the black ones are and I haven't started on the green, but I assume they go those places as well. They earn thousands of gold, make it more difficult for those of us with some dignity left in us and also the status of having these wanes as more and more buy them on the AH. Anyone else hate these guys? If so, let Blizzard know on the forums!
I hope Blizzard comes up with something to get rid of those soon.
Anyway, rant over - good luck getting your lil' red dwagon. Hope you have as good, nay more, luck as I had.

Killing all 3 Kinds of the Whelplings makes sense, i had mine from a Crimson, not from a Flamesnortig. And with the Goblin Kixxle at 50.1/37.9 i could get rid of the junk and earn at least a few gold.

I farmed the Tiny Crimson Whelpling twice, the first time I leveled up from 30 to 35 I was getting roughly 100xp from each kill and finally got the drop, it took about 3 days! The second time I counted how many I killed and it was 1,532 whelps! so I'm assuming I killed about that many the first time. The funny thing was that it was from the same Crimson Whelp where I got the drop! If you head up to Grim Batol its the Crimson Whelp up on that plateau, the one in the middle between the Flamesnorting Whelp at one tree and The Crimson Whelp at the other Tree. I also got blue drops from him and two green drops from one corpse loot.

Took me about 17 hours farming in that time 3 days passed before it first dropped, an idea for someone who is farming the dragon, go up every 30-60 min to the raptor cave up north to try to get i got 2 of them while farming and that is atleast some gold at AH, i hope you get more luck while farming this then i did!

Four hours... for four hours I killed whelp after whelp, I don't know how many I killed. I got about 2 gold and some silver in the process if that's anything to go by...
Nothing. Simply nothing. Though I am going to go back and try my luck when I go to collect the Razormaw Hatchling. But still, it's pretty frustrating.

They haven't removed the pet from the game. I farmed one last night. Am now trying for a second for my husband since he's been wanting one for years and I always seems to have yucky luck with drops. Waiting till I get a second to learn it myself.

I spent about two hours farming this after hearing a rumor that it won't be dropped anymore after the new expansion comes out. Probably not true, but there's no harm in stocking up on a few if it turns out to be true.
After finally getting one I can't decide whether to learn it or keep it for later. Guess I'll just have to farm for a second one. ;)

I'm not going to say that the drop rate is wrong, and I may just be
VERY
lucky, but when I found out this pet existed, I got one on my second kill. Decided that I was going to keep farming, since I wanted to use one and sell (at least) one. Kill #5, got another. After seriously about 1 1/2 hours, I had 5 of these things in my bags. Farmed for about 2-3 more hours, and got bored, having a total of 9 Tiny Crimson Whelplings in my bags. Used one, and sent one to just about each of my alts, sold the rest for 200g each.
A couple of tips I'd give is to kill
ALL
types of whelps. Even though one or two of the types dont drop the pet, there's still extra loot there. Sold some of the tailoring patterns for some decent cash. Not too sure if they all share spawn points, but it seems like it. I did my farming on a DK, using Icy Touch to just blast them and moved on, coming back moments later to loot. Cleared one side, moved to the other side (of the Orc Caravan), and the first spot was respawned. If you are a skinner and/or a miner, (Like my DK :]) this is a nice spot to farm since mining nodes are common and the whelps are skinnable.
(Side Note: Noticed that the rare spawn raptor nest north of these mobs drops a pet now and I've farmed it as well. Also, the Red Dragonkin leading to Grim Batol don't have great loot tables, but skin Thick/Rugged Leather.)

Thanks for the location! I was the only one out there farming and they spawn just like everyone said - I followed the pattern and got it only after an hour and a half farming! It's going for 2400 bid on my server - Trollbane and I said um no to paying that much for a vanity pet and farmed it myself.
It's very cool looking!

I have learned three things while farming this. Karma's a ^&*!@. Payback's a *!@#$. And revenge is sweet. I'm a 71 'lock that had been farming this for about four hours when an Undead Rogue decided to kill me, while I was unprepared(Seriously, didn't even realize I was flagged. T.T). He starts farming them too. I go away for afew days. I come back, he's still farming them, but there's two low-level flagged Dwarves around and he kills 'em. They come back, he starts campin' 'em. On the third death, I whisper them and tell them not to spirit res. I shadowfury the Rogue and keep him nice and stun/fear-locked while slowly killing him off(Yes, I enjoyed it. Alot.). Well, I use Shadowfury again and a red whelp gets caught in the AoE. He dies, the Dwarves get the Honorable Kill achievment, and that little red whelp? Had one of these babies in it. I am a very happy camper, and, Nah ni nah ni nah nah. Eat that, Horde. :P

You must be very lucky indeed - and I am the complete opposite, every time something requires luck I definitely do not have it.
Over 1 week:
358 Red
618 Crimson
313 Flamesnorting
Total: 1289
And it was just about the same for the
Deviate Hatchling
, around 1200. I just got this around 10 mins ago, so the drop rate is still the same. But a curious thing happened though, I got it right after I just happened to get the
Razormaw Hatchling
in the cave near there... so maybe I do have a little luck - but it only comes in spurts lol
I used KillCount (
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/killcount.aspx
) for counting, Good luck everyone - DONT GIVE UP! Just keep thinking the next one could be it!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed--saw that someone killed 37,000 whelps before getting lucky, hopefully won't be that bad for me.
Edit--5000 kills, still no whelpling. : (

On a whim, I wandered down to the Wetlands. I farmed up the Azure Whelpling a while back and it took me a good couple hours of serious farming. I've had some good luck today, so let's go find out!
I trotted over to the whelp area and five kills later, guess what popped up? Dayum, that was fast. :O

Ok, so I did about 3 or 4 'runs' around the whelpling area, avoiding all of the Lost Whelplings. At that time, I figured I'd do one more run before calling it a night. Sure enough, about 1/4 of the way through my last run, I get the companion drop off a Crimson Whelpling. I figured I'd finish the run anyway... Good thing I decided to do that. Just about complete with the 'run', I killed a Red Whelpling who gave me my second companion pet.
Now, the big question is: Do I AH it or give it to my wife? lol She's not the pet collector that I am, but she may be. I'll bank it for now. Maybe I'll find a buyer that's willing to give up some nice chunk of change for it and both my wife and I would use the gold..
Keep at it folks! It's worth it!

I tried farming for it for two hours, then I had to get off for a while. Came back and grinded for another hour just before the raid. It's funny, it dropped when I least expected it to. I was positive it was going to take three days of grinding. Off to the azure whelpling! Wish me luck!

I spent roughly 4-5 hours farming the mobs in Azshara in order to get the Azure Whelpling when it finally dropped.
After getting the Azure Whelpling I decided to try and obtain the Crimson Whelpling. Went onto Wowhead like usual to gather some information about the mobs and the path I should take and prepared myself for a long grind like what happened with the Azure Whelpling.
However, this time I was really lucky. On my third mob that I killed when I started farming this pet the Whelpling dropped! It just proves how at the end of the day it is entirely by luck and random.
Good luck to all of those still farming for the pet! Don't give up!

I'm unable to find any of the red whelps that used to be in Wetlands, they've all been replaced by "Ebon Whelp." Seems unlikely that they'd remove this pet, will update if I find out where they moved to.
Update: As of 4.0.3a, 3/4 of the whelplings are now random drops from mobs in the zones that their respective whelps used to be in.
Azure
- any mob in Winterspring,
Emerald
- any mob in Swamp of Sorrows,
Crimson
- any mob in wetlands. The
dark whelpling
now drops (for sure) off of "Ebon Whelps" in Wetlands where the Crimson whelps used to be, and may still drop from whelps in the Badlands.

Here is a UPDATE for Cataclysm Crimson Whelping farmers
Tiny Crimson Whelp is a -ZONE DROP- and can be Dropped off any lootable NPCs in wetlands, however the drop rate has been lowered dramatically...for example it took about a average 20mins-2hours to get a Tiny Crimson Whelp 5 hours max. After cataclysm it took me 4 days of 6hours of farming per day to get a Tiny Crimson Whelp yes 4 days
i warn you now its not easy cheap gold for anyone planning on selling it in a AH. Its more of a status pet like Teer said.
I cant imagine people who just wanted to sell this pet to spend all the time and effort it takes to get that awesome little dragon and then just sell it.
It does drop but it take a very long time id say about 5times longer then it did before alittle tip for people who want this pet
First if you have a hunter level 60+ that can 1 or 2 shot the whelps use him to farm and turn on Aspect of the Cheetah and dismiss your pet he will get in the way of your loot, this will save you time. Second go to North of GreenWardens Grove where you will see Ebon Whelps and Dragonmaw Whelpstealer fighting. Just go up and down the trail of destroyed wagons from Twilight Highlands and GreenWardens GroveThird KILL EVERYTHING THAT MOVIES AND DONT FORGET TO LOOT! last tip there is a mailbox at the alliance base that horde can use...if you run out of bagspace or get some blues or woolcloth you want to sell just go there and mail it to a bank alt the level 30 guards are hardly a problem
WARNING: Horde on pvp severs "like me" or sometimes alliance might have some trouble from the local 85s going to twilight highlands and occasionally you'll run into the average player doing archeology
i hope this helps somewhat....The drop is very very low so it will take awhile remember to be patient and hopeful

Well from the research I did today, it seems that the Ebon Whelps would drop both the Tiny Crimson and the Dark Whelplings respectively.
The Ebon Whelps specifically drop the Dark Whelpling, but since they are in the Wetlands and the Tiny Crimson Whelp is a Zone Drop now, putting two and two together leads to believe you can get both from farming the same mob type.
It has been confirmed since Cataclysm came out that people have have both whelps on the Ebon Whelp. I am only 400 kills deep not finding either one, but just wanted to give an updated information regarding the two, since most on the site is out of date, will update more later.

I believe there have been a couple of posts about this before, but I'd just like to say it again. Ebon whelps are a great mob to farm for this. There's a place in the Green Belt where they're all in a line pretty close together, and they respawn in about 10-15 seconds, so I just run up and down that all day. They also drop Dark Whelplings, which I've gotten 11 of so far. I've been selling them for 1.5-2k each and giving to my friends. The razormaw nest is right there too, so I just fly up there every hour or so and get one of those. So I definitely recommend that area. Great way to make some gold while looking for this guy!

As of Cataclysm, it seems most of these now "zone-drop" pets are now looking at 1 in 10,000 chances, confirmed by most of their wowhead pages.
(Azure Whelpling, Black Tabby, Crimson Whelpling, Hyacinth, Razzashi Hatchling, Sprite Darter)
Trust me, I've been farming -_-
Edit: Really?
Wowhead reset all its data after the Cataclysm launch.
Go look at those numbers. Definitely not 1/1,000.
评论来自
Glowyrm
Interesting, either way most people are still under the impression that they are ALL still 1/1000, so I was just going by the information out there. Really sticking to the Wowhead numbers though, they go from 1/3000 to 1/12,000, I would say the drop rate is actually closer to the former and not closer to 1/10,000.
For the dragons that still drop on more limited mobs like the Emerald and Dark Whelp, they are still closer to 1 / 1000 as Blizzard has said and as you seem to agree with as well.
评论来自
SnowyIVu
If you really want to stick to the Wowhead numbers, 1 / 5000 looks like the most likely number.
WHAT?
Wowhead data shows 152 loots out of a sample size of 1,181,513
That's 0.000128 chance... a lot closer to 1/10,000 (0.0001) then 1/5,000 (0.0002).
For the dragons that still drop on more limited mobs like the Emerald Whelp, they are still closer to 1 / 1000 as Blizzard as said.
Yes, I never disputed that. The Dark and Emerald whelplings, Firefly, Fox Kit, etc... are still 1/1,000.
What I stated originally is that the few pets that have been turned into zone drops are now much closer to 1 in 10,000, and there is data upon data to prove that.

- Tiny Crimson Whelpling = Alexstrasza, the Life-Binder

- Dark Whelpling = Neltharion, the Earth-Warder (Now Deathwing)
- Azure Whelpling = Kalecgos
They might be missing Nozdormu tho.

I've been farming at as well. It has constant spawn and, as a druid, i can swipe down 5-6 at a time, loot, and they've respawned. I'd suggest looking into the addon Rarity (
http://www.wowace.com/addons/rarity/
). It tracks your kills and how much time you've spent farming as well as popping up an achievement-like popup when you get what you're looking for, which is helpful as this is a white item and will just be autolooted.
I'm currently at 1050 kills with no pet. I'll update once I get him!

A friend of mine was farming near the "war" area that FallonTK mentioned, killing the Slavehunters for skins while she tried to get a whelpling off of them. I told her to summon me out there so I could help her (and partly because I wanted a whelpling for my little paladin) and charged into a group of the Whelpstealers.
Third thing I kill, a Tiny Crimson Whelping drops. I'm a bit outraged on her behalf, but I am quite happy with my little pet.
I'm helping her farm one of her own, since I feel a little bad about being handed one just by walking into the zone.
So far, 1000+ Slavehunters, 800+ Whelpstealers, 10 Pyrricions, and I don't even want to know how many Ebon Whelps. They haven't even dropped her a dark whelpling yet.

Oh well....back to the grind

Additional - finally got it after around 23 hrs farming. Best advice I can give is nearby Greenwardes area there are dragonkin fighting ogres, follow the road to the zone exit and there will be 3 groups constantly fighting with very fast spawn time. On the road always 3 orcs versus 2 dragonkin, spam em with aoe and you get 5 kills approx every 20-30secs.
Good luck :) Off I go to get the emerald whelp from Ferelas now .......

I knew the "little green dragon" story for a long time, so when i reached higher level I hunted noxious whelps and i looted his emerald whelp after about 800 kills. Now i see the cataclysm drop rates of the crimson whelp I'm even more delighted he gave it to me.

I found best spot to farm this pet at 68,47... There spawn two of Ebon Slavehunters on the road, who run towards Dragonmaws. Respawn time of those Slavehunters is about 5 seconds so you have time just to loot the two corpses.

i was level 21, found it after killing 2 ooze-creatures (the hostile ones) :) i felt normal in the beginning, after i watched the AH price i felt way better haha. But the temptation to keep it is high also, but i prefer some leveling money ;) and for mounts and stuff. besides, a whelp isnt my favorite pet.

The power of randomness (ie. RNG)... over 7,000 kills and 7 Dark Whelplings BUT still no d*mned Crimson... I'm making a fortune tho... and I even got killed 3 times by Deathwing (which was starting to get OLD) ^^ Farming ain't a waste of time!
EDIT: Just 15 mins ago I got mine! Aproximately it took me over 7,800 Ebon Whelp kills (despite this numbers are a mere stadistic). I was solidly killing about 500 per day more or less. When I got boring of getting the same greens I tried the mobs which are battling in groups nearby the entrance of Twilight Highlands which dropped cloth and generally less garbage for sellers. Total farming time over 25h more or less... Which makes it a total fail (my luck sucks hard), lol.

Do we have any real confirmation of the drop rate on these after the shattering yet? Sources such as wowpedia and the rarity addon still list them as 1/1000. WoWhead data shows ~ 1/10,000 which seems much more realistic to me, but I'm not sure just how accurate WoWhead's data is post-shattering. It's only been accumulated for a fraction of the time of the old data.
And, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this item completely removed for a period of a few months? That's a lot of data that would've been uploaded to WoWHead of kills that couldn't have possibly yielded the drop, skewing the drop rates in a negative way.
Based on my own farming so far and comments left by others, if it were 1/1000 I'd have been statistically very likely to have found one. 1/10,000 however, and I'd be very lucky to have seen one yet. Personally, I'm leaning on 1/10,000 for this and the azure whelp.
I guess based on a lore perspective I can see not killing red whelps for any reason now, since they and the blue flight are on our side, while the black are corrupted and some of the green are still a tad insane, but still... I'd rather have a specific mob drop it for a 1/1000 chance. Just sayin'. =\
Edit: Finally looted one off of an ebon whelp. Approximately 6583 lootings of ebon whelps(I wasn't tracking my kills for my first dark whelpling) during which time I looted 7 dark whelplings. It took me a total of roughly 13000 kills (my first thousand weren't tracked either) between ebon whelps and the instant respawn orcs and dragonkin.
Here's the part that really annoys me: The ebon whelp I looted this off of is one that's typically captured by a dragonmaw whelpstealer, thus destroying their loot. I would always try to kill the whelpstealers when I saw them attacking an ebon whelp, and this particular one that dropped my crimson whelpling had a whelpstealer running for it. =\
Thanks to alternaworks above for a bit of inspiration to keep me going.

The best spot to farm this pet is exactly at 67.3,47.2. There is a "battle" going on between Ebon Slavehunters and Dragonmaw Whelpstealers. This point is an area where 4 ish of them meet to wage war with each other. They spawn in relatively 15 seconds then engage again. You don't even have to move. Having skinning helps so you can clear the big Ebon Slavehunter corpses, but it isn't needed. Good luck and happy hunting!
EDIT: Its more like 4 "normally" spawn here, but when the groups around you are done killing their opposite faction, they will rush to this spot and start smashin' on ya. Their aggro radius is quite large. You are usually constantly looting and aoeing; no real wait time is relevant.

They go for around 15K gold on Lothar-US, so it was a nice rare gift to give my wife. She was very happy. That makes me happy!

After several days of farming 4 to 5 hours a day and approx. 8024 ebon whelp kills(didnt get the addon that keeps count until just a bit into the grind) and 3 dark whelp drops, i finally got this pet. I was determined to get him since everyone in my guild said it was near impossible to get. Ha! I farmed the whelps that are along the road where the orcs and dragonkin are warring. they spawn very fast and you dont get as bored. I was just standing in the one spot where 5 or 6 of the orc/dragonkin spawn, but that was so extremely boring that i would nearly fall asleep. The key to this is patience and determination. Happy hunting everyone.

Best farming spot
for these is likely the black dragon whelps, "Ebon Whelps," in the north, near Grim Batol, simply because they also have a (much higher--1/1000) chance of dropping a Dark Whelpling. Your drop chance for a Tiny Crimson is about 1/10,000, off any mob in Wetlands, so you may as well try for a Dark or three to sell while you're at it.
Also, at 50.2, 37.8, there is a Booty Bay (Horde-useable, in other words)
goblin vendor
named Kixxle who you can sell off all your grays to, assuming you are friendly with Booty Bay.
Remember to jump into the Raptor Ridge cave now and then (entrance is around 69, 36) to check for the Razormaw Hatchling,
another rare pet
which can be found in a nest partway through the cave (just follow the right-hand curve, and if it's spawned, it'll be on the rock ledge surrounded by shallow water).
Lastly, if you're Horde and not on a PvP server, be aware that a few of the
Alliance guards
at Greenwarden's Grove have a tendency to wander toward the whelps, so if you're blindly shooting everything in sight, watch out for these--you'll trigger an attack message and get yourself flagged, or killed if you aren't 85, and there ARE level 85 alliance players often around doing Loremaster.

I was farming for a Dark Whelpling off of the Ebon Whelps in Wetlands. I got my first Dark Whelpling after about 1 hour of farming, and after 30 more minutes I got a second Dark Whelpling. Then 30 minutes later the Crimson Whelpling dropped! I was incredibly excited since I know these are rare! This brings my collection of whelps up to 3/4... I'm still missing the Azure Whelpling and no matter how hard I farm in Winterspring, it eludes me still. I suggest selling your Dark Whelplings on the Neutral AH because they tend to go for more on there... And if you are going to farm for the Crimson Whelpling you might as well do it by killing the Ebon Whelps because of their incredibly fast respawn rate and the fact that you will most likely pick up a few Dark Whelplings which go for 4.5 or 5k on Alliance AH and around 6 or 7k on Neutral AH. I have tried about 5 more hours for another Crimson Whelpling to sell, but it hasn't dropped again (but three more Dark Whelplings and several auctionable green items did)... It's a nice grind!
Good luck!

A good potential location to farm this pet is where the D'maw Whelpstealers and the Ebon Slavehunters are fighting each other on the road leading into Twilight Highlands. There are 3 "fight points" next to each other where these mobs continuously spawn and fight. I can kill and loot roughly 300 mobs/hour here and while I've yet to acquire this pet, I've managed pick up 6 world blues in about 5 hours of earnest killing (random I know but still!). If this is truly a zone drop then it's all about maximizing your loots/hour and I can't find a better place...

I have been farming in
Wetlands
for a few days. I was working on the
Dark Whelpling
at first and scored 2400 kills that way (and got my whelp after 2415) plus the other mobs I was killing here and there (those weren't tracked with the Bunny Hunter add on which is why I switched to rarity). I also spent some time farming the
Black Ooze
in the zone which drop the
Oozing Bag
. After about 400 or so kills and not one bag, I just went to the road leading into
Twilight Highlands
. There are the dragonkin and orcs fighting and they spawn rapidly. As an 85 rogue using fan of knives, I found it hard to keep up with the looting before more spawned and more times than not, I just stacked my kills. Anyway, I finally got it from this group. Not sure if it was a dragonkin or an orc, but after 6303 kills, I managed to loot one. I know that for this 1/10,000 loot pet, that is good odds. It sells for a ton on my server, but as a collector, I wanted it for private use. :) Happy Hunting all.

Lucked out and the Crimson Whelpling dropped from an Ebon Whelp after about 950 kills (tracked on Rarity). I'm just a lowly level 20 twink hunter playing on the starter edition for free, so my only choice is to use it for myself. I've been working on farming this for several evenings now. Can't kill the mobs fast, but I've made circuits above Greenwarden's Grove, along the edges of the Ebon Whelp area. I've also killed the Ebon Slavehunters along the way. I expected the Dark Whelpling to drop first, so this was a pleasant surprise!

My math suggests that killing
龙喉暗影守卫
&
龙喉白骨守卫
at the same rate (since their spawns overlap) will give a drop-rate of about .035 and
will take an average of 2,857(.14)
龙喉暗影守卫
&
龙喉白骨守卫
(equal) kills to get one
红龙宝宝
. Also, with a drop-rate of .03, it
will take an average of 3,333(.33 repeating)
吸血捕猎者
kills to get one
红龙宝宝
. I recommend the spider's tighter grouping, over the Dragonmaw's
slightly
higher drop-rates.
Note: To anyone who wants to take a drop-rate and figure-out from that how many drops it will take, use this formula: 100 (percent) divided by drop-rate (.03 for example). This takes the drop-rate and tells how many times until the added chance hits 100%. It is very useful, but only reliable as an average. The .03 example ends up to be 3,333(.33 repeating) drops. :)

I decided 2 rounds and I'll log out and try again tomorrow. About 5 hits in a dark whelpling dropped. I already have one of those so I thought cool at least I can put one on the AH. Not a total waste of time. So I kept going. I had just about finished my 2nd round and was going to log off when to my amazement a Tiny Crimson Whelpling dropped! I was so happy I had finally gotten one! After so many failed attempts to farm this I was sure I was never going to get one ... Heres a tip If you wish to farm this fella in cataclysm
Go the where the caravan with whelps was in Pre-cata content on its road is a point where Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and Ebon Slavehunters constantly clash together all you have to do is simple: Stand at the clash point use Wait for clash, Use AOE, Loot, nowrepeat once every 5 secs took 45 minutes for me to gain the pet in that time i accumulated almost 3k kills i know its not alot for what some have to wait for the drob but it is the fastest place in all of wetlands to farm the pet in my experience
Good luck ^_^

Just got mine! It dropped off a Dragonmaw Whelpstealer. I have farmed for almost a total of 3 days (12x3 = 36 hours), and approximately 15500 kills of Ebon Whelps, Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and Ebon Slavehunters. I killed Orcs and Dragonkins at the location where 4-5 of them are battling and respawn almost instantly, the coordinates for this spot has been mentioned in several other comments. I also killed some Leech Stalkers, Highland Scytheclaws and Mosshide Mystics because they have higher drop rates, but only a few of them, maybe a total of 500. Don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I also killed the rare fossil raptor boss Sarltooth 3 times. Anyways, don't give up fellow farmers and best of luck to you all, eventually it WILL drop!

I've noticed a great spot to farm for these guys in the Wetlands. Just east of Greenwarden's Camp, there is a line of Ebon whelps that have 20 second spawn timers (possibly due to the Whelpstealer mobs). The line is about 8 whelps long and by the time you kill the last one, the whelps 3 before your current one to the beginning have all re-spawned. What seperates these mobs from the rest of Wetlands is that you also have a chance at the Dark Whelpling.

My friend went to farm this and got it within 5 minutes by killing the whelps in wetlands... As if that wasn't bad enough he went back the next day and got another within the 1st 5 or so minutes. He already sold 1 of em for 20k. Very annoying since he wasn't even farming the optimum way because he was killing the whelps rather than the orc / dragonkin mobs at the area where they clash.
I on the other hand spend about 6 hours farming and got nothing but a couple of blues and a lot of light/medium leather and linen/wool cloth.

Since 5.0.4, it has become a little easier to farm this little guy thanks to aoe loot. At 67,47 (Wetlands ofc) there is a battle between dragons and orcs, with one main spot on the road (2 dragons and 3 orcs) and 2 smaller spots (1 dragon 2 orcs) really close by. What you do is simply use an aoe attack on one spot, loot (here's where aoe loot comes handy) then move to the next spot, and repeat. By the time you cleared the last spot, the previous one will already have respawned. This allows you to have a VERY high kill-ratio, and you only need a second to loot each spot. Happy farming!

This is a great spot to farm for the little guy. I got mine after about 2 weeks of off and on farming. A few things I'd like to add:
The Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and Ebon Slavehunters do still drop the Crimson Whelpling after patch 5.0.4. One of the worst things for me is wondering if the mob I've been farming for hours still drops what I'm after. They do!
There are actually 5 mobs that converge here and 2 groups of 3 on each side. Nuke em all down and AoE loot the corpses. You won't be done looting before another group is up. Constant killing. Piece of cake.
The mailbox at Greenwarden's Grove is still usable for Horde characters BUT the sentinels are now level 90 and they like to hang out around the mailbox. Your best bet is to keep your guild herald/page with you and use him as often as possible. It looks like they no longer share a cooldown (at least at the moment they don't) and then fly to Arathi to drop more junk in the box.
You will make some gold! With transmog out, these low level greens that we used to DE are selling for as much as 5000 gold a pop! Not to mention all the cloth you'll pick up.
So, good luck and happy hunting all!

The best area I've found in the Wetlands is by the Dragonmaw gates. There's an area with three packs of mobs (2-3 Orcs fighting Wyrmkin) that respawn almost instantly after you kill them. AoE looting only makes this easier. I killed at least a hundred or so in a couple minutes' time and got my whelp after an hour. Good luck!

After farming this for about an hour at the insta-spawn spot (67,47), and revising my technique; here are some thoughts. There are three insta-spawn groups in a 'V' shape. The one in the middle has 5, and the sides each have 3. The strategy I eventually settled on was:
1) Run up and down the "V". From left, to mid, to right, to mid, to left, ... etc. Spamming AOE. Basically if you compare this to running around on a normal map, you are essentially killing four mobs for the price of one.
2) You might be tempted to loot each time, but that just slows you down. With the new AOE loot, looting large groups is a snap. I looted about 20 mobs per pile on my 5th loop.
3) Use your speed boosts when they are up. These guys respawn almost instantly, so there is no need to go slow.
My sense is that this strategy effectively boosts your chance of getting this by slightly more than 4X. That said, its still a really low drop rate ...
(Before you probability haters go nuts, consider: even while the per-mob drop rate remains constant, you are killing four mobs for the price of one, and group loot allows you to loot 20 for the price of one, and speed boosts allow you to kill quite fast every CD. Thus, the toon's chance is boosted by more than 4X while the per mob drop rate remains constant, and independent.)

I came to wowhead to learn about the Tiny Crimson Whelpling I got yesterday and learned more than I expected.
Thank you Wowhead for explaining something that really puzzled me. I was doing a quest killing the Orcs in the Wetlands and couldn't understand the mage running back and forth AoEing these three groups. I couldn't ask them as they were Horde. So I just followed them back and forth, skinning the Ebon Slavehunters after they were looted. Spend at least 30 mins doing that before my bags were full up.
After reading the stories here, I daren't tell how few kills it took for me to get this. Let us just say it was much less than 100.
<Light dawns> There was a Lvl85 running back and forth killing Noxious Whelps today in Feralas. Also confused me but provided me with a great leather source. There must be a green whelpling also. Off to read up.

On my server during Cataclysm these could fetch 20 - 30k, I just purchased one for 3k, presumably it's because of the ability to put pets in cages, I'm wondering if its the same on every server, or just mine? I have a question... I have been trying to farm this guy for the past couple days, and I've read up about it a lot and I want to know if anyone who has a decent grasp of math could tell me if they think the instant respawn spots are better to farm despite the .01%% chance of getting it (the Ebon Whelps and the one spot where the battle is going on with the orcs and dragonkin), instead of the Leech Stalkers, which are farther apart and not an instant respawn but have a .03% chance of dropping the Crimson Whelpling.
That extra .02% could have a big difference, but the time inbetween spawns and walking over to the next target could negate that. What do you guys think?

Okay - does everybody know where to go to farm linen and wool cloth, and greens? Between Greenwarden's Grove, and Dragonmaw Gates, there is a stretch of road where you can AoE mobs comprised of orcs fighting dragonkin. They respawn almost immediately, and with AoE loot, you just plow through tons of them in no time. *Bring a skinner for extra AH joy.*
So that is how after playing WoW for almost seven years, I finally scored a tiny crimson whelpling. I was farming first aid cloth for my baby undead monk - and this dropped.

The whelp is of white quality, but when I look at others in the AH, they are all blue and leveled up. Does this mean that in Mists of Pandaria, I can summon my whelp, level him, and then sell him for more gold? Or should I not summon the whelp in the first place because I will not be able to trade him?

Using an addon, I tracked how many tries it took me to find this pet: 17,557 (Roughly 15.5 hours). 1/10,000 drop rate is for the really lucky I guess. Over a period of weeks, I stayed and killed the recurring slavehunters and dragonmaws in the location mentioned by several previous posts. Good luck to everyone looking for one of these little guys!

Complete slaughter at the end of the road! And after 10 hours, In a pile of 29448 dead bodies, I found this little guy.
Farmed in two session :
19794 attemps 7h05
10065 attemps 3h49
For a total of 29448 attempts 94.74% 10h44. The combination of
this spot
, the
dynamic spawn
and the
AoE loot
make insane farmer even more deadly. Had to farm the Azure whelpling and i got all them legendary dragon.

Just snagged one from the Black Market Auction House, so pet hunters be sure to check that place daily and maybe save yourself a lot of time at the expense of some gold.
Named it Lil Rhea in honor of

You can also get loads of linen cloth and wool cloth while you farm this guy near the constant battle on the green belt, wetlands.

I can confirm that Dragonmaw Whelpstealer and Ebon Slavehunter drop these. Even though with a crazy low droprate. I got one after like 30 min of hard grinding these mobs. I continued grinding, didn't find one for like 2.5 hours.

Before you adopt a whelping, always make sure you can give it a loving home, and remember it might one day grow up and return to its dragonflight, but always have a place for you in its heart.

Got my Tiny Crimson Whelping on the 3397th attempt, Best (fastest) way to farm is where the Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and the Ebonslave Hunters duel between their two "bases" if you will. This so far has been the easiest one to farm. Good luck to the rest of you.

Finally got mine yesterday after 46,500 kills.
I stuck to the
slavehunters
and
whelpstealers
in the Green Belt like so many have suggested. I tried the raptors and the spiders, but even though they have a slightly higher drop chance, they are just too far apart. The slavehunters and whelpstealers are so close together, and literally respawn in seconds, so you can do non-stop farming for as long as it takes.
I personally preferred to do this on my druid - in cat form, run in and swipe - and looted straight away .
For those interested - these mobs are also a great place to farm linen cloth, wool cloth and medium and light leather from the slavehunters.
RNG was not kind to me for this pet. They usually go for 10k gold and up on my server and I'm cheap, so there was no way I could afford that. Like everyone says - just keep at it and eventually the odds will roll in your favour. Good luck to those still after this pet!

i went to wetlands medium leather's farming spot (the one with dragonites and orcs) to level skinning 1-75 on my monk, and it happened to drop it in less than 10 minutes, but i had no idea about the price and rarity, and its worthing 30k for a level 25 on my server
today took me 1 hour to drop another 2 whelplings, it seems to drop from the elite dragon that fly around there too
its easier to farm with a brewmaster, just place the black ox statue where you can aggro most mobs around (midle and side ones) and the elite will eventually aggro too

Just got mine only took about 20 mins killing the Dragonmaw Whelpstealers and Ebon Slavehunters that are attacking each and instantly respawning.

This is probably a total coincidence but after donning my "Talisman of True Treasure Tracking" from Draenor, I had the elusive red whelpling within two kills (Wetlands). However, I should note these were kills 7893 and 7894, so its likely just a case of rng kicking in at a propitious moment...

I'm probably going to sicken a few folk with this but right now I'm on a trial account and got it on my fifth kill before starting the quests. Current price on the AH (lightbringer EU) 26,000g. I won't be upgrading this a/c as I have an old one I'm trying to get back into so I summoned it.

After about 2 days of farming this in wetlands. I found that farming the dragonmaw whelpstealers is faster and more efficient for trying to get the Crimson Whelp. So far I only got one of each but I am satisfied with that, hopefully this will help you get your whelps.

Can confirm this still drops from the insta-respawn mobs (Ebon Slavehandler and Dragonmaw Whelpstealer) in Wetlands. I stood at coordinates and AOE'd them for about 2.5 hours until one dropped. I'd suggest bringing a vendor mount with you as you will be getting lots of vendor trash from the farm.

20162 kills to get this little *BLEEP* today. I farmed the Dragonman Whelpstealer and Ebon slavehunters. luckily at 100 the rate at which you can kill and use lootarang it was only about 6 hours of farming. On crushridge-us one of these puppies hasnt touched the AH since June 2nd so if im crazy enough i might just go for another.

As at February 2016, the fastest place I've found to farm these is at 67,47 (halfway up the road from Greenwarden's Grove to Twilight Highlands). With a good AoE, you can kill up to 250
黑鳞奴隶猎人
and
龙喉偷猎者
in 10 minutes. There are three mobs that spawn every 10 seconds at this point, close together, making for a fast and easy loot. It's helpful if you have a portable repair bot to sell things to - your bags will fill up fast.
I got my Crimson Whelpling today after 2,293 kills - it was easy enough that I think I'll be farming here for awhile.

Just for all of you, born not so lucky as I did. A.t.m. I am at try 20299 and still no drop.
My collector madness and adiction is telling me that it will be one of the next drops and stops me from giving up.
But just sharing this to counter all the happy faces who have instant drops (or closeby)
Close to insanity here :) For all the unlucky : Keep up the spirit you are not alone

I really hate being this guy... but..
Was doing my loremaster achievement in the wetlands area and got one off a Wetlands Crocolisk while trying to just collect my 10 Marshy Crocolisk Hides.
Literally the luckiest drop I've ever had, I screamed and woke up my wife and two kids.
Sorry for you guys farming it, feelsbadman <3.
Edit: Wowhead is showing 12 drops in 106k kills, I feel horrible now.

My advice is get a feral druid, bind Thrash to scroll up and queue up a few podcasts.

28,400 attempts at Wetlands 67 46. And as at the time of writing, it still hasn't dropped. To the point where I'm wondering if it actually exists on the loot table for the Ebon Slavehunters and the Dragonmaw Whelpstealers.
I am getting some decent transmog loot though.
EDIT: I FINALLY got it after 35,629 kills at the above co-ordinates. If you're going for it, settle in for a long time. I followed a couple of other posts here and used a class with a decent AoE, and bound it to my mouse wheel (up and down so I didn't accidentally zoom in or out) and just sat back with some music.

I've looted this 4 times from the Dark Irons/Mosshide Gnolls fighting near Whelgar's Retreat. I highly reccommend farming there because 1) they're easy kills (most are at half health before I get to them because they're constantly fighting) and 2) they respwan VERY quickly. There's always lots of them around. They also drop nice mail. I've gotten the complete Burnished and Defender mail sets from them. Still working on farming Blood Knight Mail (also from the same place).

For those of you who are looking to snag this pet without having to run all over Blizz's wetlands.
Go stand at /way 68.0, 47.2
This is the spot where the Ebon Slavehunters keep re-spawning almost instantly. I killed 1000 in 10 minutes before going to bed. Both whelps drop from these mobs. Just take a high level toon that can mow these down with an AOE.
Edit 1: After another 3 hours of sitting in one spot I'm up to 6075 attempts with no luck but I've had to unload my bags twice of vendor trash and gear including some pretty nice items including:
Tons of Linen, Silk, and Wool cloth
Several patterns for all professions
Lots of greens to DE, vendor or sell for transmog
圣歌法杖
提米的玩具枪
守夜人短剑
I'd continue but my family is demanding that I pay them some attention. I'll update as I go.
Edit 2: I took another 2 1/2 hours to farm and got to 10,017 but my carpal tunnel is telling me that was a bad idea so I'm done for a while. I got most of the same but some items of interest are:
艾米的毛毯
铁片刀
I finally went back and finished this up. It took me another 2 1/2 hours but it finally dropped at 12773 attempts.

BM hunter.
I stood at range where the two factions come together and and used a bmhunter macro from WoW Lazy Macros alternating with Fetch to repeatedly shoot/fetch until my inventory was full, then pulled my mammoth mount and sold junk, and repeated.
I got the drop in about 20 minutes.

Confirming as of 10/2022 the spot mentioned in other comments (67.35, 47.19 in the Wetlands) is still viable and drops. However, since most people seem to only comment about their lucky drops that beat the odds, I'll shared that it took me 28,619 kills at that spot (as tracked by Rarity addon) to get the drop. I had started to suspect that the spot had been nerfed since it was taking so long, but it appears to still be viable. Good luck!

I'm now up to 20k kills of the Slavehunters and Whelpstealers without a drop of this item. According to Rarity, 85% of players have received a drop by this point, so I know that there are people who have killed more than I have before receiving theirs, however, I'm wondering if anyone has seen this drop from these mobs since 10.1. Do items sometimes drop off of a loot table with new patches? Getting super frustrated at the RNG gods on this one. Hope they're getting all their wrath out on me with this item and will give me better luck in the future.
Edit: Finally picked it up after 22526 kills. So painful, but glad I grabbed this one up. Definitely not going for a 2nd to sell though. Definitely still drops from these mobs in 10.1, just slowly in my case.
