As with all archaology items, they should make this recipe BoA or the Jar BoA. I leveled Arch the instant cata came, was only 90skill behind realm first, since I had some connection issues in the start. I do not want to level Arch on another char, since it takes forever. And sadly, the one I have 525 arch on is not my Alchemist. : /

I had my first dig site pop in Uldum at 460 Archeology , though I read somewhere it could start as soon as 425.
But then do you need 525 Archeo for the project to be a canopic Jar, and will you get greys artifact before ?
thanks

So I'm up to 7 Canopic Jars solved with no recipe. Since data updates on this page seem a little scarce and we have non-Alchemists submitting data I've decided to guess the drop rate.
What you can do to guess the drop rate at any given stage in your progress is to assume that no matter how many jars and other commons you've completed, there is a 50% chance you should have encountered the recipe and a 50% chance of the opposite. Once you assume this, simply put your number of attempts into this formula:
1 - .
I'm currently sitting at 7 jars complete, which means the drop rate (using my data alone) is 9.4%. Further attempts without success drive this down. Alternatively if we could isolate alchemist data from the rest of the wowhead data, we could map a distribution, with the peak being at the 50/50 cusp from my assumption above.
All of that considered, the comments about how many jars it took individual alchemists to get the recipe
are
valuable to anyone who might come back and look at this page for reference later - that is if enough players report how many jars it took them.
I plan on coming back to this page and letting other alch/arch fiends know what # jar I nabbed the recipe from. It may let them know whether it is worth their time or if they should simply seek out someone with the recipe and pay a slight premium.

When farming tol'vir fragments, I find it REALLY helps to have multiple teleports. I'm a rogue, so I don't have any class utilities like DK/Druid/Shammy/Mage, but there are other ways. If you're up in hyjal and an Uldum site pops, being able to use a kirin tor ring to get to dalaran and then porting to tanaris can save you 5 minutes of flying. Likewise if all of my southern sites go dead its time to hearth to stormwind or take a deepholm potion and use the portal there to get back. There's also a guild reward cloak which will port you to Stormwind on an 8-hour cooldown, which I use as my 'emergency' teleport.
Another tip I can give is common sense, but always go from one site to the next closest when it's done. Some people might want to farm specifically night elf or fossil fragments, but if you're after the jar you can't have any other priorities.
If you're creative in how you get around Kalimdor, you should be able to get at least 2 digsites in Uldum per hour.

Yeah I'm starting to really dislike Archaeology as a whole. I know this is supposed to be a secondary profession that takes time to get items from, but the fact that Uldum digsites are such a pain to get, not to mention the number of common artifacts for that respective zone...make it frustrating. I've opened 4 Canopic Jars and still no recipe. I'm 525 alchemy and 525 Archaeology...just no luck whatsoever.

I can confirm that alchemy is not even required to get this recipe. I have Engineering and Mining and the recipe dropped. I'm definitely not dumb enough to delete it and am seriously thinking about getting rid of Mining and leveling Alchemy just to learn it.

I have opened two Canopic Jars and so far have observed something very important:
If you have not completed the achievement: The Boy Who Would Be King, then it has a chance to give you one of the artifacts you have not recovered yet. This has been confirmed by a friend of mine.
So if you're looking for the Vial of the Sands recipe and don't have the achievement yet, it could be a good idea to wait until you get it before opening your jars.
Or, you could be impatient like me and open every jar the instant you get it, foaming at the mouth going "RAAAAAA VIAL VIAL VIAL VIAL... oh. Organ."

So happy! I got the recipe on my 4th jar. However I got all the other common Tolvir artifacts and Ring of the Boy Emperor before my first Canopic Jar. When I received my first jar I completed the The Boy Would Be King Achievement. After my first jar I got another jar straight after it with no success. Then I solved Pendant of the Scarab Storm. I got my 3rd jar straight after and then 4th jar finally containing it.
I opened all my jars as soon as I received them. I levelled my archeology in Eastern Kingdoms until 450 then move to Kalimdor. Set my heart to Uldum and for northern Kalimdor sites took the portal from SW to Mount Hyjal. Hope this helps.
Good hunting!

Shortly after hitting 525 on Archeology, I was able to complete my first Tol'vir project and Canopic Jar. Believe it or not, I was extremely happy to find out that the recipe was within the Canopic Jar.

If the recipe acts anything like the
Weather Beaten Journal
then the following may happen:
I have many toons with fishing and some with
Find Fish
- I really didn't need
another
with Find Fish.
I happened upon another
Iron Bound Trunk
on a toon that already had Find Fish.
- I wanted to test if opening the Iron Bound Trunk with the wrong toon would destroy the Weather Beaten Journal.
So I mailed the Trunk to a toon that didn't have Find Fish and opened the Trunk... to find that there was, in fact, the Weather Beaten Journal within (I even double checked). I did not loot the Journal or the subsequent other item that was also in the trunk and mailed it back to the original toon that already had Find Fish.
When I checked the box with the toon with Find Fish the Journal was obviously not there then mailed it
back again
to the toon without Find Fish.
Upon looking in the box the second time the Journal was no longer there. Proving that opening a Box with a Weather-beaten Journal within by a toon with Find Fish will destroy the Journal.
So, if you believe that the recipe may at some future date become BoA then
you don't want to open the jar
with a toon that doesn't have Alchemy.

I know that my torture has just begun, after all I've only completed 21 tol'vir artifacts. From now on I will be putting these in bank (without peeking into them first). Maybe they become non BoP or the

is turned into BoA or without any bind and also drops for non-alchemists at some patch in the future. Just wonder if the drop inside them is decided once they are solved/created or when the container is opened. In any case the items might just be invisible for non-alchemists with an option of turning them visible in the database somehow in a patch.
Anyway, got nothing to loose by saving them for a few patches other than a bit of bank-space.
EDIT: I'm MAJOR bugged, I've gotten
坎努匹克陶罐
6 (SIX) times in a ROW now .............
The mathematic chance for this should be 1 in ~ 117.646 (There is 7 Tol'vir commons, so 7x7x7x7x7x7, this is without calculating in the chance of getting the rare ones, also
坎努匹克陶罐
might have even lower chance of beeing your solve, making the chance of this happening even less) and I've made a ticket to find out of something fishy is going on after this mornings hotfix.
I have Tol'vir fragments to do 2 more solves. But really don't feel like testing if I'm still stuck at the Jar since im actually farming for the scepter. But if I get one more after this one it would bring it up to close to one in a million chance.
If some of you are hunting

I am not finding more frequent Tol'vir sites in the new patch at all. I get patches of Tol'vir dig sites (say, 2-4 at a time), but still way too many Night Elf dig sites for my liking (say, 6 or more after my 2-4 Tol'vir sites).
There is still much work to be done to make Archaeology fun and worthwhile. Granted the increases in gold value of the greys has helped, but I only consider that to be the start of a long journey.

So far I've opened 10 jars with no luck. I've farmed tol'vir archaeology a little less than a month now with 76 artifacts. There are times when it takes days for a jar to proc and it's driving me crazy. For example my first jar was probably 4th artifact but it wasn't until 36th that I got the second one! And right now the Uldum digsites have abandoned me.
I've never really understood why people whined that the archaeology killed their interest to play but now I'm starting to realize how they are feeling. I'm at the point where quitting is not an option, I have all the mats and I've wasted too many hours. Not only is the grinding damn boring but also the world has lost the last bit of it's magic. I'm just flying around blindly in the world I used to love, now it's just filled with annoying useless digsites and calculations of how long I have to fly to get to the next place.
I'm not against RNG. It's just that the disappointments in this grind are far more painful since the digsites are so rare, artifacts all hog 45 fragments, getting a jar takes so long and most likely you won't even get the recipe. The least Blizz could do is to let you specialize in one race and those digsites would have like four digs instead of the usual three.

Yes - I have quickly learned to not only use the keystones whenever there's the option to, but also to wait to use them - if there's an available slot and I don't have any keystones, I keep digging until I find one, and then create artifacts.

I might be one of the unluckiest people ever with the RNG of this item.
On my hunter alt, my alchemist, I am trying to get this pattern. I have been trying to for quite a long time. Skilled his Archaeology to full just for that purpose.
So far I have made from Tol'vir alone:
2 rares:
Pendant of the Scarab Storm
Ring of the Boy Emperor
41 commons:
2 Engraved Scimitar Hilt
8 Soapstone Scarab Necklace
9 Castle of Sand
8 Cat Statue with Emerald Eyes.
7 Sketch of a Desert Palace
6 Tiny Oasis Mosaic
1 Canopic Jar.
A single canopic jar within 40+ Tol'vir projects. I have not used keystones because Tol'vir keystones sell for a boatload of gold on my server's AH.
Ironically, on my main without Alchemy, out of 18 Tol'vir common projects I made 6 were Canopic Jars.
RNG on Archaeology overall is terrible.

I am hunting for this as well, I leveled my Druid straight to 85 from launch, by only doing Archaeology, needless to say, i was among the first for my server at the time, since most worked to 85 first, but at launch the XP from digsites were broken. One artifact find equaled one level-appropriate Quest XP. I've set up a system that works well for me with archaeology, only because I have seen little feedback on others. I sweep down Kalimdor, doing all the NE, Troll, and Fossil digs, until all possible Digsites are in Uldum. I've been lucky enough to start hitting Uldum, and by the time I reach the last one, the previous one respawned in another part of Uldum. That being said, I've only finished one Canopic Jar... which of course, did not hold the prize I've been seeking. I will have it some day. I'm also curious to see what others have been doing to be able to hit Uldum quickest. Is it just more time spent doing Archaeology overall, or is there some secret I'm unaware of?

Then one day I decided to give it another try. I found my 2nd jar and, not expecting to get anything, I left the jar in my bag for several hours while I was farming herbs. Finally I opened the jar and I got the recipe!

It shows all the drop rates, gold made, spawns.. etc. so if you're really serious about farming for the stupid Vial recipe like i am... this is what you're in for.

Trying to get the recipe. 23% of Kalamdor spawns are Tolvir. I can probably dig a site and get to a new one in 5 minutes (avg). That means that about every 20 minutes I should have 1 Tolvir dig. That gets me about 13 fragments (avg) per 20 minutes. 6 rares @ 150 frags and 8 commons at 45 frags is an avg of 82 frags per solve in Tolvir. So that's an avg of 6 hours running around digging per solve (higher for rares and lower for commons of course). Given there are 14 artefacts, there is a 7% (ish) chance of working on a jar "next time" per solve (i realize this rate varies as you solve rares assuming rares do no spawn > 1 time). let say each Jar has a 5% chance at the recipe ( i think i saw 3% here but it already bad so...). That is then 0.35% chance of a recipe per "solve". That's 285 solves (on average) to get recipe or 1714 hours or 71 days. Lol, maybe I am wrong. Freaking crazy.

It will take an average of approximately 200 hours of digging, solving and flying around to get the Vial of the Sands recipe if you are already able to dig in Tolvir and if my model is correct/close. Have a peek.
So my above post isn't so great because rare fragments are not repeated apparently. Here's a better model maybe. My parameters are:
1) time to dig up a site and move to another site = 5 minutes ( I am a druid with 310% flying and am pretty mobile as you know)
2) average fragments looted from a digsite = 13 fragments
3) percent chane a digsite will spawn in Tolvir = 25% (
http://wowdigsite.com/digsites/race-distribution/
)
4) I also assume that once you have solved the rares, you dont have to solve them again.
5) there are fourteen artefacts that have an equal probablity of being your next solve for the first "round". A round is where you solve all the artefacts in the set.
6) there are eight artefacts that have an equal probability of being you next solve after the first "round". ie subsequent rounds you dont need to solve the rares again.
7) the probability of getting the recipe in any given canopic jar is 5% (maybe high - who knows)
So, using this data the fist thing to note is that, on average, we will need to solve 20 jars to get our recipe 1/.05. Now to find out how much it takes to get a jar on average. First, to get a digsite spawn in Tolvir is 25% chance. It takes 5 minutes for me to dig up a site so that means that on average it will take 20 minutes for me to get 13 fragments from tolvir (5/.25) or 39 fragments per hour.
In round 1 where we need to solve the rare we have a total of (45*8) + (150*6) = 1260 fragements to complete the round.
In all subsequent rounds we need to solve only (45*8) common artefacts = 360 fragments
The time required for round 1 is 1260 fragments / 39 frags/hours = 32 hours.
All subsequent rounds are 360 / 39 = 9 hours (rounding as I go :) ). We need 20 rounds on average to get this recipe so total hours is:
32 (first round) + ( 9 * 19) = 203 hour total :). 203 is much better than my first post. If rares spawn only once, it will take an average of 203 hours if all my parameters are close.

Just got Vial of Sands recipe....first jar......color me shocked.
First Tol'vir site at lvl 460
found 2 keystones along the way
got the recipe at lvl 515....my alchemy is at 525
And here I was in for the long haul! Next fossil solve is Fossilized hatching, and have made some not bad gold with some other things solved along the way. Will be leveling archeology on other toons too...good passtime for those times when chat traffic is high.

Patch 4.0.6 (2011-02-08):
Archaeology fragments now have a hard cap of 200 per race. Players will not be able to collect additional fragments until they complete artifacts to take them down below 200 fragments. Players with more than 200 fragments will not lose additional fragments in 4.0.6, but in a future patch we may remove any fragments above 200.
Do digsites stop spawning if you reach the hard cap? Or are you just unable to collect them?
If digsites of that particular race would just stop spawning. Farming Tol'vir would be a lot easier

12 Tiny Oasis Mosaic
11 Cat Statue
10 Sketch of a Desert Palace

Some statistal fun facts about this jar:
These jars occur approximately 10% of the time from Tol'Vir, and Uldum digsites occur arround 20% of the time in Kalimdor, that means one would need to solve an average of 50 puzzles in Kalimdor to obtain this jar. Since the vial of the sands recipe has a 3% chance of being in one of these jars, one would need to solve approximately 1,667 puzzles in Kalimdor to obtain the coveted recipe. After that amount of archeology solving, it seems that a new title is warranted from Blizzard: "Professor Emeritus," which is usually granted to accomplished, retired professors.

This is a huge grind, i have completed 35 common tol'vir artifacts with only one being the canopic jar. During my grinding however, i have found the reins of the grey camel, so that's a plus. Hopefully some more jars soon, as im losing it a bit out of frustration. Good luck all.
-update :
out of 40 common tol'vir artifacts now solved, i've still only found one jar, i'm giving up for now, as i'm clearly the unluckiest person alive. Will post here again.
-update :
Today was alot better, standing on 56 solves now and got 6 canopic jars, so it's getting better, no recipe yet, for those of you in similar situations just keep going, it will drop. Good luck..

I've completed all the rares for Tol'vir(yup got the mount!) and have created 58 canopic jars yet to find this recipe. Only missing the Dwarf staff and Troll 2H to have received all rares. Bit discouraged at this recipe drop rate as you get your hopes up for every jar you come across...58 times I've been let down. Those who get on their first few times...be very thankful.
Update:
82 jar solves and nothing (2325 total, 692 tol'vir solves) but you're absolutely right, the very least one gets out of this is gold. Lots and lots of gold. I could easily buy the mount from someone, but I'll feel cheated :P

I can now go so far as to say that if you don't have the recipe on +- 30000 gold, yes then start complaining. For me anyways, even if you get the recipe on your first jar, you probably don't have enough gold to make it, some of you might have the gold, but most of us won't. Grind for atleast all the achievements and thereafter if you have the gold, just buy the mount. Sure there is a guildie which will ask no money if you give him the mats. And given the guild discount it will be a lot cheaper. The gold whilst grinding this mount with archaeology aren't too bad, so grind the mount, get the gold with farming this, if you don't get the recipe, at least you will have the gold. My idea anyways. Tolvir common solves now 63, 6 jars, 0 recipies. Good luck.

Okay, stupid question.....when do you start getting Canopic Jars? My Alchemy and Archaeology are topped off and I've been getting dig sites in Uldum. So far I've completed 5 common artifacts but no rares. Could I start getting them any time? Or do you have to complete a certain amount of common and/or rare artifacts first?
Update: Right after I posted this, I got my first jar, which contained what I'm sure will be the first of many mummified remains......(sigh)
Also Update: Right after making that last update, I lucked out and got back-to-back Canopic Jars. I solved both of them before opening one because I was curious as to whether or not you can have more than one of these in your inventory; it turns out that you can. The first one I opened (and second one overall) had the recipe in it. First time I've ever been that lucky getting a rare anything!

Can anybody confirm whether banking a Canopic Jar prevents further jars from dropping? I found my first jar, banked it, and haven't been able to build a second jar, despite having completed at least 30 other Tol'Vir artifacts. Is that just bad luck, or do I need to open the jar before I can build another? I see from a few comments that others claim to have banked multiple jars, but just looking for some reassurance. One jar out of 30+ builds seems strange.

This has gotten frustratingly harder to farm since patch 5.0.4 here's why
They have limited your inventory of fragments to 200 per race. This means that instead of just farming a digsite to get past it and get a Tol'Vir digsite instead you actually have to stop and solve artifacts. While seemingly small, this is a decent amount of additional time spent solving instead of farming.
They have increased the number of "digs" you get per site from 3 to 6 meaning you now must spend twice as long digging a site before you can clear it and HOPEFULLY get a Tol'Vir dig instead. Yes it means you get twice as much when you do get a Tol'Vir dig, but you get far more "Other" than you do Tol'Vir so it does not average out.
There's a number of new digsites that you won't have in Gatherer, meaning you spend a lot of time discovering new nodes which takes longer than known nodes.
Thank you Blizzard, thank you so much for making something people already found painful and made it worthy of /wrist
EDIT: Approaching 1000 total solves, 200 tol'vir I hate this! Yes xpac is around the corner, but for the love of god I'm tired of having my hopes dashed each time I open a jar!

I'm 0 for 19 so far on the recipe on canopic jars.
The "easy" rares to get are the ring and the scarab (not the mount, the other rare). I got my claw pet around the time I completed my 65th or 70th tol'vir solve. I'm about 120 solves now and the only solves I'm working for are:
Tol'vir (2 weapons + mount + vial of the sands recipe)
Troll (2h axe)
Dwarf (2h staff, my main unlocked this and I have it stored on my alt that stores heirlooms and boas)
Fossil (shield)
Night elf (I have all 7, last one I unlocked was the trinket)
I'm doing this on a mage, and my hearthstone is set in Desolace.
I try to keep my digsites at south kalimdor, because I have easy ports to uldum from sw and dalaran to tanaris and sometimes Theamore for the dustwallow and south barrens points. Most of the digs I do are in tanaris, ungoro, and uldum. Sometimes I get a bad spurt and have to go to azshara, winterspring, desolace, feralas, and other "out of the south area" areas.
I'm not giving up on this, I'm doing this on my mage Makeumysheep in turalyon realm.
Each time there is a "red blotch" you get 6 digs and they range from 5x to 9x with a chance at a green that gives you 12x....at this point i'm ah the night elf ones, using troll ones cause my main is a warrior and i want a cool 2h for vanity, and i barely get any dwarf ones because there is only one dwarf spot in kalimdor.

This I found was the best way for me to spawn Uldum dig sites:
1. Kept hearth at Hyjal's start point to quickly get to most northern dig sites.
2. Average run from north to south would spawn 3 dig sites in Uldum.
3. If a dig spawned north of me as I was digging and heading south i would hearth/fly to the site and dig. This only happened half the time though and usually a short flight north.
4. When 3 dig sites spawned in Uldum I would go there and dig unless the 4th dig site was close to Uldum; I would then dig it up sometimes spawning the 4th site in Uldum.
5. With 4 digs in Uldum, 2 more would spawn in Uldum 100% of the time 11 out of 11 (so far) for me; with 3 digs at Uldum I would get at least 1 extra but often 2 extra sites. Got the recipe on the 5th Canopic jar (lucky) but I kept at it for the rares.
Again this was the easiest way to get digs for ME in Uldum, I've heard that one should dig Uldum sites immediately upon spawn but I just don't see that as effective. Side note: The rares have proved more useful to me (troll/dwarf/fossil/Tol'Vir) than the ability to create a mount and sell on AH as the mats are so expensive (Unless one can copy multiple mats= cheating) . Made my gold through mutes/potions/elixirs/flasks.
Good luck everyone!
and again 4 Uldum dig sites that produced 6 digs.

People hunting for this recipe need to keep in mind it's not a guaranteed drop, it's not 100%, it has a relatively low drop rate so be prepared to have to go through several canopic jars to get it. My advice: don't get tunnel vision, do other things after awhile and give yourself a break or you could burn youself out and lose interest in all aspects of the game. I was fortunate enough to get it on my Nelf DK Trouillefou on Uldaman after 51 Tol'vir artifacts, 6 of those being canopic jars, giving myself breaks in between before I got overfrustrated and only heading to Uldum when I had a good 3 or 4 digsites out there. For those who decide to give up or get dispirited after only 3, bear in mind it's a low droprate so unless you're among the lucky few, it will take awhile. This takes time and persistence. Giving up is a surefire way of never getting it, you're only shot is to KEEP TRYING! I for one don't mind that this recipe is BoP, it made finding it myself all the more rewarding. However, Blizz probably should've made it so it only dropped if you had alchemy to spare those who got it on non-alchemists the frustration. Like many rare drops in game, I'm sure the droprate listed is more or less only an approximation, not a guaranteee, and is entirely random. Some may be fortunate enough to get it from their first canopic jar, others after numerous other artifacts and digging through countless mummified organs. Patience and persistence, friends.... and a bit of luck.

I know that the historical rate is 2% for finding joy when they are opened but not sure how often is common to see them pop up to be solved. I'm finding that this was a good thing searching for this jar. Hear me out. Many of the rare items I never would have looked for, I now have and have the great enjoyment of enjoying. For example in my pursuit for the recipe I have found the Fossilized Raptor Mount and pet. I have Bones of Transformation which turns me into a naga, Ancient Amber to confuse my foes, Highborne Soul Mirror for yet again confusion for my pvp foes, and the Pendant of the Scarab Storm to intimidate my friends in a fun manner. I even achieved the more common rares such as the Wisp Amulet and Druid and Priestess Statue set which are always a fun giveaway that your an archeologist. The Crawling Claw and the Pterrordax Hatchling are two pets I didn't even know you could get from archeology and I'm glad I have them. I'm still pursing the recipe... 9 jars in, but I have the Troll rares and the Dwarf rares to go through before I give up... and in a small way I would be kinda sad if I found the recipe now because I wouldn't want to pursue what the Dwarf and Troll might have in store for me if I did. I'm being surprised with many of these digs and I'm finding that I'm kinda on patrol to protect my faction when I fly North and South of Kalimdor. It's brought new life in a way to the game. I guess what I'm saying is yes this jar is difficult but expect many rewards down that road to the recipe. So keep digging fellow archeologist or in some people's case my fellow professors (Yeah you get a tittle "Professor" after 20 rares).

To keep it simple for the 99% of people that come here for a straight answer -
- The Vial of Sands recipe has a
2% drop rate
- The Vial of Sands recipe is
Bind on Pickup (BoP)
- You must have a
minimum Alchemy Level 525
to learn the recipe. To achieve this you will need to learn Zen Master Alchemist from the Alchemy Trainer, which requires a minimum
Character Level 80
.
- You must have a
minimum Archaeology Level 450
for the digsites to start 'spawning' in Uldum. To achieve this you will need to learn Zen Master Archaeology from the Archaeology Trainer, which requires a minimum
Character Level 80
.
- You need to be minimum Character Level 82 to get to Uldum via the portal (get the starter quest from capital city notice board). Otherwise you can fly yourself there.
- There is a known glitch, which Blizzard does not intend on fixing, which sometimes allows the Vial of Sands recipe to drop for people who have Archaeology but NOT Alchemy. The recipe was designed to be 'smart loot' and drop for Alchemists only, but this is not the case. This means that some non-alchemists can have the BoP recipe in their bank, and at a later stage maybe drop their existing professions, take up Alchemy, and learn the recipe themselves.

Tol'vir Artifact Statistics
I've been farming artifacts of the various different races on my druid and began farming Tol'vir for the rare artifacts, only to realize that I would need

I was of course a bit disappointed of myself for not looking this up before I bagan farming.
I could, however, use the results from solving the artifacts on this character to see about how much I would need to farm to get the recipe on my alchemist.
Note: these values may not be 100% accurate but are used to give an idea of how much would be needed to get the rare recipe etc.
350 Crates of Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments

s after solving all the artifacts, giving approximately 50

per
坎努匹克陶罐
.
(I saved my

and sent them to my alchemist)
According to Wowhead ,
配方:时沙之瓶
has a 2% chance of dropping from a
坎努匹克陶罐
.
50
坎努匹克陶罐
s should give a good enough chance for a recipe (About 65%).
50
坎努匹克陶罐
= 2500
修复的遗物
s (12.5 stacks)
I set 1250 as my goal to begin with.
1 mantid digsite gives about 40/50 fragments or 0.8 of a solve.
1/0.8 = 1.25
I would need 1.25*1250 = 1562.5 digsites to get 1250
修复的遗物
s.
I got about 25 mantid artifacts per hour.
It should therefore take me 1250/25 = 50 hours to get 1250
修复的遗物
s.
After farming a bit from time to time over a period of about a month or two I ended up with 1200

Just registered to share some important info. Several weeks ago desperate of all the fruitless digging I started looking all over the Internet for some help - the digsite reset thing was gone so I basically found nothing until I stumbled upon a post in some forum (I can't even remember what it was but credit to whoever discovered it). Basically you save all your
坎努匹克陶罐
which have only mummified organs (open to check but don't take it out) and just let them sit in your inventory (haven't tried with the bank).
When a patch hits (don't know if it only applies to major ones) the loot in the jar gets resets and you have a second chance to find the recipe. I had saved 5 jars and the morning after 6.0.2. became live I started checking and what do you know - the second one I tried had the
配方:时沙之瓶
.
I was beyond myself with joy.
Yeah, I know it's not the most reliable thing to wait for patches, but whoever reads this around one - take note and good luck :)

Some quick tips if you are planning to farm the Mantid artifacts and you have an underpowered alchemy alt that is a bit fragile.
While in the Dread Wastes, complete the Mantid quest line (
starts here
) to the point where you get some augmentations and enhancements to help with fighting any patrolling mobs that might interfere with your artifact digging.
The same goes for the Townlong Steppes. Choose a companion to help you out with the
Shado-Pan
daily quests. Trick is to choose a companion and then just never complete the daily quest chain. The companion will happily follow you around the whole day guarding your artifact digging expedition.

Was there some change to the drop percentage of Vial of the Sands? Because I just got it on my first canopic jar.

Raynet
did they change the drop rate for this jar?
ive done 32 tol'vir solves on my alt with max lvl alchemy (i had the dragon reciet on my main before i changed prof on her)
out of the 32 solves i did, 3 were tol'vir rares,...and 2 were canopic jars.
is the drop rate supposed to be that low?

I'll add my grind experience to the lot. (WARNING ! LONG POST)
I first told myself : the RNG for Tol'vir digsites can be thwarted by Mantid Artifact Sonic Locator strategy, so after reading Pindip's comment, I tested it and can confirm - got approximatively 25 restored artifacts per hour. Which gives approx. 200 hundred Tol'vir fragments including the keystones.
So on a more psychological approach (because this IS a true test to your patience) :
I first had the "beginner's enthusiasm", meaning high hopes of getting a few jars on the first hours. Of course, the first two days gave nothing but lots of mosaics, sketches and castles, and a few cat statues.
Then I got one of the rares, i.e. the ring of the boy emperor. Another blow on the morale for "losing" lots of fragments.
After that came the first sign of desperation, where I started thinking, maybe I would lose dozens of hours just for a recipe, I went on nonetheless.
After a week of grinding at least 2 hours each evening, I saw the Dread Wastes/Townlong Steppes zones as very depressing landscapes, adding to the maddening repetitiveness that is archeology. In order to counter this dark mental state, I tried to gather all the positive things that could come out of this or help persevering :
- The grinding session shouldn't be too long, 1-2 hours then take a break or wait until next day (if you work or study it's probably not an option)
- Put on music you like, preferably something epic or energetic so you get boosted by the tune. I listened mainly to a soundtrack from an old game called Dungeon Siege
- If your alchemist is an alt and not capped, you still get EXP from each successful survey. It may seem ridiculous, but don't worry, it will add up in the end (my priest had hit 94 and at the end I was at 65% just from the farming)
- For those who care, you will get a lot of collector achievements, from Mantid and also Mogu artifacts. On a side note, like commented by someone before, you can still farm all Pandaria archeology achievements and use all restored artifacts for conversion
- Try to play with an empty mind, or at least not focusing on the recipe. It will drop eventually. I got it in the 10th jar, and probability fanatics set aside, it coincides with the 10% estimated drop rate
- After a while, you'll learn to optimize the patterns of digsites, and putting your HS at Klaxxi'vess will help to jump to Dread Wastes when you have 3 or 4 digsites there. Try to clean lastly the larger digsites of a region
- Rare solves are not useful now that the level cap is 100, and a waste of fragments, but still, I hoped the next would be the hand pet or the scepter (mount)
- Think of the joy you will feel when you get the recipe. The farming of the cata reagents seemed like a ballad in a magical world after so much grinding.
All in all : KEEP GOING AND DON'T LOSE HOPE !
I'm pretty baffled there isn't an achievement or a title for those who learned the recipe. Anyone with 50k gold can learn the mount since it's BoU... a shame really !
Good luck to everyone !

It is possible to get this recipe on your first and only jar. I leveled arch and farmed for the past 3 days (this is all I did, spending probably 6-8 hrs/day on WoW primarily for this). I was fortunate to have the time. On the third day I had the jar appear and after clearing numerous digs (I didn't count) throughout the day I finally got a dig in Uldum that got my required frags. I was hesitant to open the jar, anticipating disappointment. I still can't believe the recipe was in my first jar. Luck to all who attempt this. I'm still in disbelief, but happy. :)

It seems like drop rate has been nerfed since pre-patch.
Statistic after pre-patch. Seems that drop didn't change just had REALLY bad luck.
411 Restored Artifacts.
66 Tol'vir solves
8 Canopic jars
1 Crawling Claw
0 Scarab Mount
1 Recipe:Vial of the sands
I will update after every farming session. I've limit myself to 1.5hr per session that is around 50 artifacts.
P.S. I farmed in total 24 Canopic Jar including previous patch. Had no luck on recipe tho.
GOT IT BOIZ! MY QUEST IS DONE! WISH YOU VERY BEST LUCK!

I just read most of the comments and shearched guides for the fastest way to get the recipe. So while I was listening to the last audio drama released by Blizzard (08/04/2016) I did some archaelogy stuff and went to Ashran so I could exchange for the tol'vir fragments. Got the recipe on first try. I'm freaking out here. THANK YOU GUYS <3

Took me about 6 hours of Mantid farming to get enough Fragments for the jars.

IF YOU ARE CONFUSED (LIKE I WAS) THIS IS A MUST READ:
The Canopic jar is a Tol'vir artifact you will solve.
You will open the jar and hope to get the recipe to create the mount.
You must have Alchemy and the recipe binds to you.
You can turn in "boxed" (completed) artifacts to buy Tol'vir fragments to solve more Tol'vir artifacts in hopes to get to the Canopic Jars.

For Legion, do the same as with Pandaria.. You get only one map to search and to dig, so solve a lot and trade.
I found that the best time to do this is during Hallows End with the Magic Broom, you dont have fly mount casting time, its instant.
You can farm this using the Suramar archelogy sites... just wait till two of them are the ones on the far right (Crimson Thicket, Meredil and Gates of the City).. so you "lock" the remaining one to the other sites, which are pretty close and are easy to dig, once you get the idea, you know where to dig.. Use the boxes from the solves to get Tol'vir parts and cross your fingers... its faster than grinding in Wastes or trying to farm in Uldum directly..

I farmed 111 Restored Artifacts in Pandaria and exchanged them for Crates of Tol'vir Archaeology. Afterwards I didn't get a single jar.. is the drop rate bugged or something?

As of 8.3/VoN'Z,
奥丹姆
has been updated for Visions of N'zoth assaults. If you're starting a new alchemist and planning on farming for
坎努匹克陶罐
, be sure to visit
希多尔米
(She is just to the SW and around a corner from the Seat of Ramkahanen. You can see her speech bubble on the mini map if you portal into the zone from your capital city.) And have her switch you back to the Cataclysm version of the zone before digging all over Kalimdor surveying dig sites hoping for a Tol'vir dig site to pop. These dig sites will not spawn in the new zone.
/way Uldum 56 35.2 Zidormi
Remember you also also need Archeology 450 for these dig sites to appear.

Yeah, well, random and rare means random and rare... I had 96 project crates gathering dust in my bank, which I never bothered to exchange for anything before. Decided to give it a try with tol'virs . Did not count the exact amount of fragments, but let's say the average was 7 pieces per crate. 672 fragments + 2 or 3 relics, let's say it was ~700 in total... I had ONE (1) jar with a piece of grey crap. Had found a rare lv37 ring and a scarab toy, though...

You just gotta love RNG.
Had 200
restored artifact
that I exchanged for
Crate of Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments
. With those I got 7x
sketch of a Desert Palace
, 5x
Tiny Oasis Mosaic
, 5x
Engraved Scimitar Hilt
, 7x
Soapstone Scarab Necklace
, 3x
Castle of Sand
, 9x
Cat Statue with Emerald Eyes
.
With 30 or so fragments left the Canopic Jar
finally
decided to make an appearance - luckily had enough mantid fragments to convert to Restored Artifact to get the needed 45 fragment to make the jar.
To sum it up: 203
restored artifact
to be able to make 1 (that is
one
) Canopic Jar, and all I got to show for it was a
Mummified Organ
(could we
please
make either Restored Artifact or this recipe not soulbound)

Ridiculous not to be Bind On Account. Basically have to level Archaeology all over again and then hope the Canopic Jar pops and then hope AGAIN that the recipe is in one of the jars.
