A Frayed Knot > Afraid Not! ;)
Three strings walk into a bar. The first one goes up to the bartender and says, "I'd like a drink!". The bartender says, "I'm sorry, we don't serve strings here." He goes back to his two friends and tell them that the bartender would not serve him. One of the other ones says, "That's ridiculous!". He gets up and walks over to the bartender and asks him for a drink, but gets the same response. After arguing the point with the bartender to no avail, he walks back to his friends and tells them he had no luck as well.
The third string gets an idea, he twists himself about and messes up his hair, then walks over to the bartender and asks for a drink. The bartender eyes him and asks him if he is a string. The third string says, "No, I'm a frayed knot!"
I had this drop on my rogue while grinding in brill...it has no use...its just a novelty iteam like
lol The funny thing is that when I pickpocketed this for the first time, I seen it was some sort of clothing from the picture, and I was like, "oh is this something good" only to read "a frayed not"
lol ohhh blizzard
Excellent buyout price.
I actually got this as a drop rather than a pickpocket while questing.
Drop rate is currently 2 out of 226 149.
With those chances I could have gotten an epic BoE on my main...but who needs it?
I've never gotten this as a drop when you kill the npc, I believe you only can get it from pickpocketing.
For those wanting to know if it's valuable:
I'm sorry. It isn't.
Can still be pickpocketed on Bandits by level 60 characters.
As for horde, there's nothing in Gilneas. Just did the Silverpine questline while leveling a rogue, when you go to do those few quests in Gilneas, still nothing there other than those quest mobs.
So don't bother, just go to Elwynn Forest and pickpocket Bandits and Cutpurses. Got 2 in few minutes.
Spent a day and a half getting a brand new Worgen rogue up to lvl 24, at which point he learned pickpocket. Thunder Falls was the daily fishing quest, so I hiked over there and proceeded to rob the npc's blind. Frayed knots? ZIP. At most, handkerchiefs, 2-3 copper, but no knots. Hmmm. Boogied over to wizard Island, same results. So I will look elsewhere for the knots, Maybe try the pirates in 1,000 Needles. Will keep you appraised. Stay tuned...
Sooo, 1,000 Needles: Pirates 50---Rogue, 0.
Galaks 30---Rogue, 0
Grimtotems 40---Rogue, 0
Lots of better loot: Sturdy lockboxes, a few greys, greens, but NO Frayed knots. The search goes on...
Oh, FYI: Found a nifty (Yes, I said
) Macro for drive-by pickpocketing, give it a shot:
/console targetNearestDistance 10.000000
/console targetNearestDistance 41.000000
/cast Pick Pocket
/in 2 /script SetCVar("autoLootDefault","0")
Okay, so lvl 28, I head on up to Crusader outpost near Scarlet Monastery. Made bank off the NPC'S there! Five frayed knots in five minutes, and still picking pockets! Though my Alliance Rogue was level 28, I also had success there with my level 60 Rogue! Happy hunting all!
The reason to grind these are for three new pets coming in 9.01 from a vendor in Oribos. Keep in mind that these are PTR vendor items, and may or may not be implemented.
DO NOT ACCIDENTLY VENDOR THE GRAYS! Stick them in the bank until you have what you need. There are NINE vendor trash items that you need to buy all three pets:
1.) Ground Gear From Havest Collectors near Variance Keep, use or create a lvl 10 Hunter to farm these. Higher levels will NOT get the drop!
2.) Robble's Wobbly Staff (From the mobs in Firelands dungeon)
3.) Very Unlucky Rock (From bag reward sometimes from fishing daily, or 100% drop from Lucky Horace's Lucky Chest in Nazmir.
1.) Rotting Bear Carcass (Easily found in Escape from Durnhold Dungeon in the Caverns of Time)
2.) Dark Iron Baby Booties (Found in the Vault Chests you unlock in Blackrock Depths with Coffer keys looted from NPCs)
3.) The Stoppable Force (Looted from Steamvault NPCs)
1.) Rabbit's Foot, from the Human Starting area Worgs.(Low level toon only)
2.) Large Slimy Bone (from the Slimes inside and outside Wailing Caverns)
3.) A Frayed Knot (looted from Scarlet Friars and Scarlet Zealots Near the Scarlet Monastery) NOTE: This may be actually the most difficult item to get, as it has to be PICKPOCKETED by a Rogue! The good thing is there are no level restrictions, Rogues from Level 24 (when you learn pickpocket) to level 60 can loot this item.
Keep in mind all these items can be bought on the AH, but the price will surely go up, as the drop rates in the world have been severely nerfed!
I hope this helps you pet collectors, and any corrections, hints or insights are very welcome!
My catches so far today:
Large Slimy Bone - got a bunch from the slimes in Wailing Cavern, not only in the instance but in the tunnels outside it by going around the pool in the middle in a full circle.
Rabbit's Foot - (Horde) made a new Tauren, went down into Mulgore and skirted around edge just outside the starting zone killing the Prarie Wolves, got heaps.
(Alliance) made a new toon in the human starting area, killed the worgen wolves there, also got a whole bunch.
A Frayed Knot - While you can get them from the toons around Scarlet Monestary, I got more by just pickpocketing low level bandits outside Stormwind. You could probably fairly easily do it on Horde as well.
Ground Gear - as mentioned, from the Harvesters near Variance Keep.
A work in progress....

I didn't see this mentioned, but you can make a trial character for this. I went to Elwyn Forest and pickpocketed cutpurses, bandits and rogue wizards. I great spot for the wizards is Stone Cairn Lake to the east. There are a lot of pockets to pick there. I got one within 10 minutes and mailed it to my main :)
definitely had the best luck pick pocketing the bandits in Elwyn Forest as a Rogue. Took about 10 tries but got it on the 10th. Good luck!
For anyone trying to get this
You can make a trial character rogue and go pickpocket the appropriate mobs. You will have to do a few starter quests to be able to get to where you need to go but you can trade /sell/mail the item.
On my level 60 Horde rogue, I had much better luck getting
s just south of Stormwind City (in Elwynn Forest) than from the mobs around the Scarlet Monastery.
As a level 60 Horde rogue I found two of these (one for me, one for a rogueless friend) quite quickly by robbing the humans along the coast in Durotar, south of Razor Hill. I found it handy because it's close to Orgrimmar! I managed to collect the nine items for all three pets in one evening, even got doubles of six of them for a friend. Don't know if I got lucky or if it's that easy. Happy hunting!
In the house at Brackwell Pumpkin Patch in Elwynn Forest are three named NPCs:
They all can contain the knot when pick pocketed and their re-spawn rate is super fast (~ 30 seconds). Just stand in the center of them, pick their pockets, fan of knives, stealth, and rinse/repeat.
I received four knots in about six minutes there.
