There was videos about how people will turn into devilsaurs, core hounds and propably other creatures. You can still use your abilities and such.
Fixed the typo now :)
This item seems to only work on other players and their pets, unfortunately.
Though in the case of pets, it seems to make you the size of the pet prior to it being tamed (Hence why the hunter who turned into King Krush was gigantic).
That means the
ought to be amusing transformation targets, as well.
When I saw this item I immediately heard a Demoman say 'bloody spy!' in my head.
Oh the amount of QQ that would cause on the official forums...
Used one today, my male troll turned into...
A male troll.
make sure your not near any male trolls when using it next time then :P
This potion is probably the funnest I've encountered so far as an alchemist. I've got some notes on the do's and don'ts
* First and most important: if you want to turn into someone, you have to be physically close to them. I'm talking 5 foot range. Also, they have to be the closest person to you.
* The potion works on members of the opposite faction.
* The potion does NOT work on hunter / warlock pets! (I have tested this three times so far)
* The potion works for non-alchemists!
* The potion works with trinket / item effects... Player 1 uses
, Player 2 drinks potion near him. Both = blood elves.
* Yet-to-test: what happens when you use the potion near players who are under the potion's effects? I foresee hordes of clones of the same person.
I will soon have a field day with these potions. POTION SCIENCE.
I used it while targeting on a troll druid and turned into a belf pally that was sat next to me.
I used it while targeting on a belf mage, standing within 5 yards and turned into nothing.
I moved away from everyone and turned into a gnome with special facial markings that aren't available to PCs.
I moved back on top of the belf mage and turned into nothing.
Confirmed: Shapeshifting does not cancel the effect! Finally, a costume I can use on my druid without worrying about overriding it whenever I enter combat!
Can use to copy a player under the effect of
You can move, jump or even cast spells...as an herb.
This potion has very picky range when copying the model of another player character. Here are some notes:
Attempting to copy another character while they are moving fails most of the time
If you use the potion again when you already have the buff, results in a failure, and the buff will stack and you might get a default skin, nothing happens, or you lose all your costume skins and return to normal (still with buffs)
Using the potion on a hostile player character (this means not in a sanctuary area such as Dalaran) will apply the buff as a 2 minute DEBUFF, and CANNOT be removed by regular means (so cannot be right-clicked off)
Using the potion on people using other costumes (such as belf orb, orb of deception, time lost figurine etc) will turn you into an exact replica of their costume
The potion will not copy weapons
Even though this is classified as a "Potion", it
does NOT trigger the potion CD. However, using any other potion that triggers the 2-minute CD will cause this potion to have a 2 minute cooldown as well.
You can use emotes such as /roar, /dance etc as different characters, but their voices will remain your original characters voice (however, using /roar as a worgen still has the growl sound)
Anybody can use this potion, and is not alchemy restricted
After a bit of research and field testing, you can not turn into player pets or minions, and proof of doing so was from either PTR videos or day-of-release videos
You can not mount if you copy another characters model, but you can still mount if you have a default model (default meaning using the potion with nobody around)
Shapeshifting with a default model provided by the potion breaks the illusion buff. =(
EDIT for 4.3:
Using the potion of illusion IN combat WILL TRIGGER the 2-minute potion cool-down.
You can still ride as a passenger on player mounts with the illusion buff on (so disguised as a sandstone drake, you can still ride as a passenger in the enormous drake form)
EDIT for 4.3.3 (fixing some incorrect notes):
Shapeshifting always breaks the potion buff/debuff (before you could shapeshift and keep the illusion that you were a human flying around when in flight form)
(not related to on-use) Potion masters tend to always make at least 2 potions per 1 set of mats, making it much more cost efficient to have a Potion master make you potions of illusion
Alchemists do not gain any bonuses to duration or effects with the passive for this Potion. It remains a 2 minute duration
Seems to be broken as of 12/14/10 patch.
It gives me the buff but my character doesn't change at all.
I had quite a giggle over the one time I've used this pot.
I was on the steps of the bank in the Dwarven District in SW and had targeted the druid bear who was dancing a few feet away.
I changed into a very ugly looking Troll rogue...at exactly the same time my Carbonite enemy alarm popped up.
Curious, I laid a fire trap and an ice trap on either side of me and 'lo and behold the ice trap, caught - a troll rogue LOL
Poor chap died within 10 seconds as every nearby player, pet and NPC attacked him.
This isn't even a half a fraction as cool as it was in beta.
This is such an amazing potion!
You can mimic almost any form of any player operated character. You can also perform any normal action while under the effects of the potion, even if it appears you're not doing anything.
Just for starters you can be:
Any Druid form - Including Aquatic Form (out of the water!) and both Tree of Life forms.
Any Shaman spirit wolf form. Any form rendered by a trinket or a potion.
Few of my favorite forms:
Vial of the Sands Drake.
The new Tree of Life form.
The Arcanite Reaper guy!
The fun is amplified even further if you're a Mage with Mirror Image!
Sadly it only last two minutes. Although, that is longer then alot of these forms work naturally.
Basically, if another player is in that form, you can be too!
You can stack these potions with multiple buffs, when this happen your character will sometimes just disappear completely. This could be a fun little trick in battle grounds and the such.
If you try to use this potion with Shadowform active as a priest, nothing will happen but you will have the potions buff. As soon as you reactivate Shadowform, the costume goes away.
So after some significant "testing" tonight with some guildies, we've found a few fun things.
Will copy the race, gender, and armor of the nearest player (not weapon or shield, for obvious reasons)
If not near enough to a player, will turn you into one of a set of random costumes (I get a female troll shaman a lot, it seems...)
It will also copy any costumes or shapeshifts on the copied target, including
Any Druid Form (Including aquatic form and can be taken outside the water for hilarious effect)
Iron boot Flask
Orb of the Sin Dorei
Orb of Deception
Bones of Transformation
Winter Veil Disguise Kit
Super Simian Sphere
Rituals of the New Moon
Dartol's Rod of Transformation
Anything else you find out post here, this is easily the best potion in the history of ever.
I've noticed that there are times when this potion appears to not work (get a buff, but no apparent change) but actually does. I have tried to copy another player, thought it failed, but had them tell me they could see the change (and in one case show me, since I play in the same room as someone else).
Zoning after a "failed" attempt may make the change show. I used one right before a dungeon queue popped, saw nothing, but after zoning to the instance the change showed for me.
If you're a mage, or have a
Highborne Soul Mirror
your mirror images might show the change even if you don't.
I am fairly sure someone out there is wondering so, I'll say this :
allows you to get more potions out of crafting these. I would need to test this extensively in order to figure out if you actually proc "additional potions" or if you multiply the basic amount of 1-2 by 2-5x.
No promise on the testing, but I will report if I do.
If you copy a druid who is in bear or cat form (not tried with travel form) you can still cast spells as a bear/cat. In case you ever wanted to see a bear shoot fireballs.
The "illusion copy" effect does not seem to work for warriors.
My assumption is that stances is making it not work.
I used it around a friend who turned into an Orc Shaman. I turned into an Orc Shaman and the third person next to us turned into one too!
Question: (downrate if you want, IDC) does it work on Mind Controled humanoids since they're player controled?
A funny thing that happend to me on my DK is that I went to the king of Stormwind to try and become him. I put target on him and used the potion and.... Got turned into an undead... Now we know his real race :O
Doesn't seem to work to become a worgen's human form. I play a worgen and was standing in SW in human form when a random draenei changed into my worgen form and ran off.
While transformed into something else shapeshifting still changes your form to cat/bear/whatever you shifted into (didn't check moonkin form). Shifting back into humanoid form turns you back into a copy. Buff isn't canceled after shapeshifting, but for ferals it is pretty much useless as you cant stay in humanoid form to use a potion effect.
Shifting into Moonkin form removes the buff totally.
Person A mounts a Sandstone Drake. Person B drinks potion near sandstone drake and turns into a dragon. Person A "disdragons" and drinks potion near person B = Dragon Duel. Me and a guildie just tried, was hilarious
Also person B can mount Person A's Sandstone Drake while transformed, lol mating season anyone?
cast it OUT of ghost wolf form (caster form) and you will be able to shift to ghost wolf without removing the buff when you're back in caster mode.
You can use this to copy various transformation debuffs as well, such as polymorph and hex. a friend and I went out and found a Night elf, I polymorphed him, then my friend used potion of illusion on the resulting penguin, which I then copied with my own potion. we spent about 10 minutes running around org as free-willed penguins, refreshing the buff off each other every two minutes.
I also hear of a debuff in Deepholm that turns you into a molten slag ooze. Thinking of going out there, getting the debuff and copying it and returning to org via a portal. Oozes in Orgrimmar. Sounds like a good sitcom name.
Another good use: have your friend use their
Tree Disguise Kit
and get summoned to you, then jump around and cast as a big tree.
As of today when using this potion and shapeshifting into Cat/Bear/Travel/Flight form, my buff is cancelled.
Unintended error, or unreported change?
Doesn't seem to work right for me. It always transforms me into a random race instead of my target, this happen to anyone else? It's pretty annoying with how much these things cost to make..
I tried it on one of the level 5 cows in Elwynn Forest and turned into a Tauren :)
]I am having so much fun with this potion. Whenever a player who isn't aware that this potion exists sees me transform, they scratch their heads and ask WTF? I wrote a
detailing the potion's effects and uses. There are also some additional screen shots there for anyone who is interested.
/want a non-consumable like this from archaeology, longer duration and that way everyone can have fun with it.
Is it affected by mastery?
does this potion simply do nothing for anyone else? my character animates, there's some smoke stuff, and I have a buff and I look the exact same. Like. I've read everything here, but nothing happens at all.
The short duration is a real pity
Doesn't seem to be working at all when I use it on my Worgen. Not sure if it's because of the race, or a bug, or what. Kinda lame though.
I'm having similar problems to posts above mine. Often I seem to be getting a gray poof, then the buff, but I'm not actually transforming.
Well, it seems I can transform into random races while I'm standing away from other people - but, I can't transform into things I'm targeting. Which is very disappointing.
Works on a person dancing with summer flame brazier spirit, it looks really great - you become a fiery female Draenei, rawr!
if you are a shadowpriest you can change your form with this potion while your not in shadow, then you turn shadowform on and mount up - turn shadowform off and you're again what you've been. for example a bear on a dragon :D
I did this with Jeeves targeted and next to me (with 9 other raid members nearby) and I transformed into a female goblin. I'm a human btw.
If you target a npc or a player who is too far away the potion will transform you into a random creature like female goblin.
This is one of the most fun items in the game, although the duration vs. cost ratio is somewhat poor. Being able to try different faces/races on my characters has already resulted in two paid character changes. (Be warned, this might happen to you too...)
There is a bug with this potion in that if you copy a player who has the same race (and gender probably has to be the same too), you'll get the buff, but your visible character model does not update. To make the character model update, you can use these methods:
- Use another transformation effect before taking the potion (and probably afterwards too) and then cancel that effect
- Log out and back in
- Move to another zone
- Shifting to shadowform and back may do the trick too.
The archeology item Wisp Amulet is particularly good for this purpose, because it has a short 10 minute cooldown, 15 second duration (but you might as well cancel the effect ASAP) and it is not a consumable. Savory Deviate Delight, Orb of the Sindo'rei, etc will also help you reset the character model.
Another bug/feature is that you can show/hide the character's helm (and probably cloak too), but when you show a hidden helm, the shown helm is whatever you are really wearing.
The buff duration will sometimes (very rarely) reset to full duration if you log out while it is still active on you.
You can not mount up, but you can probably ride as a passanger on a vehicle (so the vial of the sands mount may work).
On average, you seem to get about 1.5 potions for the materials, so the cost for 15 potions would be about 30 Volatile Life and 10 Azshara's Veil. A herbalist can farm these materials quite quickly, but at auction house prices the potions can be a very expensive hobby (or addiction).
You are also able to copy someone in ICC with the slime debuff, and stay a slime for the full duration of the potion.
Today I used this in SFK and actually turned into one of the mobs. The crazy thing is that hours later I used it again in BRD and turned into the same mob.
I'm ashamed to say that I'd rather play around with this potion than get rich selling the herbs I pick to make it.
HaHa, try not to use 2 of them in 2minutes, because it can screw up your character!
1. Use potion of illusion on a sandstone drake.
4. Re-attach your jaw
Be one of the first to witness the new dragon leap animation!
Use this next to someone that has transformed into a Peacebloom herb!
Tried trading one to a guildie but he just stayed the same despite getting the buff (No random forms, and transforming into me didn't work either). I suspect trading breaks it but I dunno...I got a load off the AH and worked fine for me but whenever I trade one it 'breaks'
Only lasts 2 minutes, I'm highly disappointed, specially for costing 3 volatiles.
this stuff is the crap, its beast
I was able to turn into a moonkin lol, confirmed, just stand on top of the character that you wish to transform into -)
I am a female blood elf, I used this while targeting a mage's water elemental pet. To my surprise I turned into a female Draenai wearing a rather skimpy outfit... O.O
i suspect this if u got the potion mailed from another char (not the AH).
i traded a raidmember, told him to target me stand on me and drinkthe pot.
i traded him 2 more, i asked him to trade back.
i did the same on some1 else, and it did not work.
or one of the update bugs listed below in the comments.
maybe even zone related.
I discovered that using one of these on a female character as a male, you can then use a savory deviate delight to turn into a female ninja/pirate, have not tested the genders reversed.
ps, the buff is removed and the savory deviate delight buff is used.
This potion is a lot of fun. Tho I wish the duration was a bit longer.
After some fooling around with this potion a friend of me and myself found out that non-combat pets turn you into random NPCs in the world.
For example the Baby blizzard bear turned me into a female undead from the Death knight starting area.
Currently bugged for Warriors, in stance 0 i believe.
Bugged as in... it doesn't work. At all. Disappointing Blizzard...
Recently been changed, this potion will randomly change you into a preset cast of characters instead of what you have targeted and stand close by. At least that's my theory .
Tested in Tol Barad this changed me into; human female with gilneas clothing with silly hat half-assed on, dreanai female with some shaman/hunter pvp chest and kilt, dreanai male with warrior chest and legs from outlands dungeon set I think. Brown tauren male that looked like one the suspicions villagers in Tol Barad. Guild member also claimed to have gotten goblin in full Abraham Lincoln set with bear and top hat.
Edit: ! Almost forgot, this potion now works with mounts and in combat, both dealing and receiving damage. Pretty sure it didnt work in either case before this last update. Tested as ele shaman.
I'd like to see this used on a GM as and when they appear for specific reasons :D
I just used this to turn into a Worgen and I could no longer use any of my mounts while in Worgen form.
I also cannot use my mounts as a gnome.
Confirmed to work on Iron Boot Flask.
This potion is especially cool for Herbalists.
Guide to a lot of reactions in the trade channel in your capital city:
*Use Livegiving Seed
*Let someone target you and stand on you
*Let them use the potion
Now they're an herb (No, not
herb). But that's not all. They can also cast, jump and run.
doesn't work on guardians. Wanted to transform my shammy as fire elemental
would this work on humanoid pets by any chance ?
I'm happy to announce that the current potion overrides the druid forms (tested with Moonkin/Swift Flight) but only if the druid has transformed into a player and not a random NPC!
And so a druid can "fly" or "swim in the air" in the skin of another character... It was rather creepy but hilarious.
Why am I not surprised one of the 'Potion taking Sandstone Drake ontop of a regular SS Drake mount' was taken in Pornshire? XD
Sad to say, it has been fixed that you can no longer mount under the effects of this potion. Just tested it after stealing a bear form, it doesn't work anymore unfortunately.
Did the sandstone drake trick and a dude flipped out b/c he thought I was an actual sandstone drake mounting him XD. Screenshot coming soon
I think I have just about as good a trick. I've copied another person, used the drake, and I kept the illusion and could fly! However, it only seemed to work when I copied someone of the same race and gender of my character (a male tauren). Flying tauren!
I captured of it.
does it work on npcs?
As someone els said, you can genderswap by coping a female / male char then use a or . If you like the effect more you can use a Savory when its about to run out, this will make you into a other gender for 1 hour, enouph time to use the Orb again. Can do this however many times you like.
If you use this to copy a Druid it will not break in combat and you will be able to use all your abilities. Also works in BG's so you can confuse some people by being a mage in cat form.
Edit: You can also copy polymorph forms by using it next to a polymorphed player, this also doesn't break in combat.
So for mages / shaman you can polymorph / hex a player in a BG use the potion next to them and proceed to pew pew as a sheep/pig/monkey/cat/penguin/frog/rabbit/turtle.
Hallowe'en wands, Spring rabbit costume, and the thing which is small consolation for druids getting fire kitty form, Brazier of dancing flames effect.
Try this if you are a mage:
Find someone with the Sandstone Drake, copy it, go to a populated area, pop mirror image, enjoy your
Tip: Use Blizzard to grab some more attention and look even more awesome with your wings out!
Even better, use the potion next to someone polymorphed, and you can be a sheep :D
These work for pretty much anything you can think of to try it on.
Except hunter/warlock pets.
Nobody makes them on my server, sadly.
I made a list of gimmick items which you can use to transform your character into a different form or race or even gender to play around with. I didn't add items like weapons that provide a procc with a transform effect that only lasts a few seconds even though I know about them. My intention was to list all items with controlable transformations. Feel free to let me know if I missed an item!
I want to thank all the people below my lists who pointed out items I missed! This list grows thanks to your effort as well! Thanks guys, you're great!

Ive had a lot of fun testing these out on my druid. So far ive successfully made the warlock demon form flyable, ive been a flying druid of flame cat, Ive tanked ZG in the form of a sandstone drake, and many other cool things :D. Basically this potion is fun for anyone and everyone, but druids get to have even more fun with it because of their transformations. This is either the first or one of very few costumes that still exists after you transform into some other druid form. I really hope blizz intended this and its not some glitch that we will have to say goodbye to in the near future. I wish it lasted longer though :(.
From my experimentation ive figured out that its not who you are targeting, but in fact who you are closest to. Although i dont think this is 100% true all the time, ive been randomly turned into a gnome in the middle of org while standing on top of an orc, so its probably not 100% who is closest but i would say about 95% chance that youll turn into the person closest to you.
They are fairly cheap to make, if you ever want to have fun with them, get the mats, then pray to the wow gods to find those super rare potion master alchs and have him make you some. Even though the potion master alch might not be able to proc more, because this recipie already has a 1-2 proc. Ill have to test it and find out, or if someone else on here already knows, let me know please :D.
Edit: As of 4.3 you can no long use this potion then hop onto other peoples mounts, it will cancel the effect.
Just found out something funny you can do with this item.
East of Orgrimmar inside Skull Rock are Burning Blades Fanatics and Apprentices. When they die while standing close to you they give you a debuff called Felblood which stacks up to five. At five stacks it turns you into a
. Now you can't mount up while you're transformed. However, if you use this potion after having turned into a demon, you'll be turned into a random form and you'll keep your Fel-Infused buff. Now you can mount up and when you do, your Potion of Illusion buff will get removed leaving you in a demon form on a mount.
Since patch 4.2.0a druids can longer get the shapeshift caused by this item when used in any shapeshifted form. MAJOR dissapointment for a double shapeshifting feral druid such as me who commonly used this item on metamorphosed warlocks.
Does anyone know what the dress is called the the female blood elf is wearing? I've tried looking it up but cant figure it out.
Patch 4.2 Hotfixes - August 10:
"Druids that shapeshift will now clear the Potion of Illusion buff."
This really should last longer, or have the volatile life removed. For something just purely fun lasting only two minutes, it really shouldn't cost, imo, more than some 85 elixirs.
Lol, I had a friend use one of these potions and turned into me, then I used one and transformed into her.... which transformed me into me. xP
This DOES work on
, for hilarious results in BGs or combined with other effects.
Works with a Murloc Costume as well. Gave a friend a potion, put on my Murloc suit aand she changed into a murloc as well.
Here comes trouble. Double trouble!
Can use these on druids in Cat form with the
transformation buff activated to become a fire kitty. :)
was posted that if you click a players pet you well turn into that players PET, this of course is WRONG as i tryed it still having the PET targeted as i drank, and was turned into that player, NOT that pet, BIG let down :(
My friend was transformed into Tarecgosa... so crazy. Couldn't fly, but could jump around! =D
This seems to have been "fixed" so that it can no longer mirror lifegiving seed. Another raid member was peacebloom and I wasn't able to turn into peacebloom, instead becoming one of the random regular characters. Very disappointing.
Something I noticed while playing around with these. I'm sorry if this has been already said, but: If you use the potion of illusion to copy another player the same race AND gender as you, you can switch your armour and retain their model (Hair, facial features etc.) Stealthing will reset your armor back into what you copied, though!
If a hunter uses Potion of Illusion while next to a player in Whisp form (
), then uses
they will be completely invisible and unable to be targeted. Try it in a duel.
My guess is Blizzard made no death animation for a Whisp, so it just disappears.
Tch, you whippersnappers call everything illusions these days...
Just a fun fact, this can be used on someone with
while they're in dragon form. You turn into the dragon, and then proceed to confuse everyone in SW about how a warrior got the staff. I was still able to use my
at the same time, further confusing everyone. Of cours, this only lasts 2 minutes unless the person with the staff is nearby.
Could I use in on Varian or Thrall?
I was in a battleground the other day, where I teamed up with a rogue (I'm a restoration druid). I saw him use the potion a few times , first a stealthed bear, and a stealth tree with daggers. Now that was quite funny already.
Now I jumped in the water to get into Aqua Form. Now most of you know that Aqua Form is like a deformed seal walrus.
So the rogue became a badass angry seal walrus assasin.
Quite funny to see that thing backstab people!
For some construcitveness. It is usable on all druid forms.
This potion +
= epic funtiemz.
I was suprised when I used one recently. I was turned into some type of death knight or monk with no chest or shirt, a rocking 6 pack, and a malevolent kilt bracers/armband of a dark smoke color. I was also turned into a femail troll with a chestpiece of cords and bones or teeth with a tan kilt. IF these are the new random potion effects, I like it. Please send some feedback if yall see the same death knight / monk illusion. I didn't get a screenshot in time :(
What exactly is the success rate of this working? Is it limited to players, or can it emulate NPCs as well? I've gone through a dozen of these trying to imitate another's appearance, and with no success.
Epic LFR fun times? You can take the buff off people on the Ultraxion fight that took the crystals. A guildie and I tested it, and are now saving the look on a few different alts to mess around with. We may make our whole raid take on this look for our next heroic kill, for our screenshot.
In other news, I've found on my realm a great way to make gold selling these beauties. Have a friend cast something such as
Primal Blessing Trigger DND
, and steal it off each other. Run to the auction house and advertise about how everyone else can as well become (x). I like to /s "Come be a tiger with us! now on AH!" and it sells big.
Don't know how but somone managed to turn into a tree and within 20 min we had a stormwind full of tree people rofl
While transformed by the potion, you are immune to the effects of
. The Engineer wearing the spex will see you fully clothed — or rather, will see the player you copied, fully clothed, even though the 'original' player appears naked.
Formerly known as the Polyjuice, this potion has been patched for 4.3 and no longer takes a month to brew.
Using it in Mists of Pandaria, it looks like it's function has been changed. it now gives you the appearance of a random npc or person instead of your target. Perhaps this is because the new illusion target thing is
. User beware incase you use this now
CURRENTLY WORKS ON TARGETS AGAIN AS OF 5.4. YAAAAAY!
This item is awesome when you need to decide which race to switch to, or what race your new character should be.
Just find a player that has the race/sex combo you are looking for and use it while having him selected and being next to him.
For 2 minutes you can test out all the spell, ability and attack animations of that race/sex - which allows you to see how your race change (or new character) would look like.
Procced x8 with potions master so it is possible.
Apparently you now have to target the person you want to transform into. Makes it easier, when before you had to position yourself next to the person, only to see them walk away and get the random transformation into a gnome or something.
[Screenshots containing UI elements are generally declined on sight, the same goes for screenshots from the modelviewer or character selection screen.]
