Blizzard already stated an announcement where it can be read that Obsidian Shards from AQ and Elementium from BWL will be renamed, since these will be 2 of the new metals on Cataclysm.
This is a starting mining ore in Cataclysm, which can mostly be found in Vashj'ir and Hyjal (also sometimes is being found in Deepholm)
Mining Obsidium can begin at 425. Be sure to pick up the Illustrious Grand Master Mining training beforehand.
Somehow on my server someone already has 2 stacks of this? Any explanation?
EDIT: He apparently had a priest MC him into hyjal in the bottom corner of hyjal but its been fixed.
Green and blue quality gems can be prospected from this ore.
Strangely enough, Obsidium Ore seems to drop far more quantity of uncommon-level gems than Elementium Ore does. Obsidium seems to drop 2x uncommon gems per prospect, where this is definitely rarer on Elementium. Maybe this is because Elementium has a higher chance go give rare-quality gems too, where Obsidium does not? Who knows!
This is a little frustrating when trying to level Jewelcrafting, as there are far more Elementium nodes in the game (especially thanks to Deepholm) than Obsidium, and tons of uncommon gems are used for leveling 450 through 500+ in Jewelcrafting.
Presence of obsidium veins seems absurdly low. I've flown around Hyjal and Vash and really struggle to find nodes. Think titanium but worse.
Are Veins terrain-phased too? That way staying in a
might result in more ores available, which would be pretty bad imo.
Looks like the Obsidium veins are caught in phasing, this is readily evident at Gates of Sothann
Blizzard needs to up the spawn rate for these nodes. I've farmed for a few hours only to have 2 stacks of obsidium, and I was lucky. I go to Deepholm, and I come back after 20 minutes with 5 stacks of Elementium. It just doesn't make sense.
Also, the phasing was really pissing me off. So many of those spawns are JUST on the border of the phase.
agreed, with everything profession wise costing 2xore at lest it takes FOREVER to get any profession lvling done. And i am in a medium populated realm, i would hate to know how bad it is in places with high populations. The Spawns need to be increased, or ore requirement re-envisioned, because right now its a mess. I dont know why they went away from what they did in LK. It worked well.
best place to mine, so far I've found. Ascendants rise in Hyjal. There are a few nodes who spawn right after each other. 10 minutes of mining, got like 5 stacks... Damn crazy
I've stumbled across a decent spot to farm this, at least until it gets nerfed no doubt. In Mount Hyjal you are sent to the Hyjal Barrow Dens as part of the opening quest line (
). The spawn rate of veins in this cave seems to be affected by the overall zone population (i.e. it's quite high right now), but there's almost never anyone in there because it's a fairly quick in-and-out type of quest.
There are 5 or 6 ore spawn points in here but you can see all of them as they pop on your minimap if you hang out in the right spot. EDIT: I've found that my ideal spot is to hang out about half-way up the ramp going into the main pool area. You can see every node that spawns and quickly get to just about any location. But more importantly, you can fish from the edge of the ramp into the main pool below; I've leveled my fishing from 0 -> 300 just hanging out there.
I was seeing a new node spawn every couple of minutes and have currently mined 50 ore in about 30 minutes of idle/AFK. The area is a relatively safe place to idle as the Barrow Deeps Watchers kill the assassin mobs that are found in the cavern. Unless you get really unlucky and one spawns right on top of you, it's practically impossible to aggro them (and it's not as if they are hard to kill).
In fact, I've had 3 nodes spawn in the time it took to write this post :)
(NOTE: I have no idea if these nodes are affected by phasing like the others. To be safe, this Horde toon has currently not turned in the quest
Return to Nordrassil
After trying various places for farming Obsidium, the place I've had the most luck is in the Shimmering Expanse. There's a nice, comfortable loop that you can make around Silver Tide Hollow, out east through Thelserai Temples, then south along the backside of Nespirah to loop along Biel'aran ridge, then north through the Tranquil wash to the start.
On three separate occasions, fifteen minutes of farming (about how long it takes to do the loop twice), has netted me between four and five stacks of ore each time. Granted, this is on a low-population server, without any discernible competition for the nodes, but still. Significantly more efficient than anywhere else I've tried.
Want to know how much prospecting Obsidium Ore yields in gold (on average)? Plug in your server's AH prices into the following:
(.07 * (
)) + (.0024 * (
This formula will calculate what each individual ore will make in gold via prospecting, NOT every 5. Also note that there seems to be a limit of 2 uncommon and 1 rare total per prospect, so the amount of gold made may be less depending on chance.
Prospecting 89 stacks of Obsidium Ore (1780 ore total)
356 Prospects total
You can view my prospects on Elementium Ore here
Elementium Ore Prospects
I've been prospecting this ore for the last 2 weeks all day. I've made lots of gold. As of 2 nights ago, I noticed that I hardly EVER get rare-quality gems anymore. I'm pretty sure blizz changed something with the chance of obtaining rare-quality gems from prospecting obsidium. I apologize if this was actually posted anywhere on the official site(s), but I haven't seen any info regarding this yet.
I can almost guarantee you that obsidium's chance to grant rare-quality gems through prospecting has been lowered significantly sometime within the last week. I'd love to read any official posts about this if anyone has links.
Crunching numbers on the data provided by users for Obsidium Ore and Elementium Ore:
For the purpose of prospecting,
-obsidium provides roughly ~1.7 more uncommon gems per stack
-elementium provides roughly 0.7 more rare gems per stack
This means that for obsidium ore to be preferentially prospected, average selling price of a rare gem should be roughly <2.4x the average selling price of the uncommon gem (R:U ratio <2.4). If this inequality does not hold on your server's economy (R:U >2.4), then elementium should be preferentially prospected. The assumption is that the selling prices of obsidium and elementium approach equality.
On my server, the R:U is about 2.0. Couple with the fact that uncommons sell far quicker due to the advantage of supplying the rares market via transmutation, demand from freshly-geared 85's as well as JC dailies. Also, obsidium tends to be listed 10-20% lower than elementium on the AH. (R:U threshold rises to ~2.8)
For most intents and purposes, JC's wishing to harvest ore for gems should consider prospecting obsidium and selling elementium. Your results may vary.
This is what i got from prospecting 1755 obsisium ore (Total value on my realm 7020g) :
Total value on my realm: 10240g
From my Enchantrix data, I've prospected Obsidium Ores 5016 times (25080 ores).
From those, I've received
66 Dream Emerald
63 Ember Topaz
49 Inferno Ruby
71 Ocean Sapphire
371 blues (7.396%)
7556 greens (150.638%)
Just saw a stack going for 17g 02s each in ah so decided to buy 65 stacks (1300 ores)
The result was 415 gems ( 33 blue gems) totalling up to 2075g if i would vendor them leading to a minimum profit of 968g 70 silver and even more if i sell them at ah.
Not bad considering it took me 30 minutes to prospect them all
Requires a diamond pick to mine.
Deepholm, Sunday morning 7-8 am server time. Blackhand.
Nice Run, felt like I only did one lap. There was another node in sight just about every time I mined something.
It felt like I was having a minegasm.
I <3 Deepholm
181 x Obsidium
180 x Elementium
25 x Volatile Earth
8x Volatile Fire
12x Volatile Water
1x Jasper, 2x NIghtstone, 2x Alicite, 2x Hessonite, 2x Zephyrite
I'm never disappointed when I mine in Deepholm.
I did 960 obsidium prospects yesterday.. so hopefully this is a reasonable sample size for patch 4.2

I've been farming Obsidian ore for a guildy, and I've found the best place to farm or just to level up your mining is
Silver Tide Hollow
. I was there for about an hour and 30 minutes and I got
(Each servers spawn rate is different. On my server, Arathor, the spawn rate is quite high.)
Silver Tide Hollow is the ideal place to mine Obsidian because, there are very few predators and if they do attack you they'll be easy to take sense they're level 80. It's best to mine here later in the evening or at night so you don't run into others who are questing or also farming. Here;s the best route to take.
Can be mined at 425 and prospected at 450 Jewel Crafting
I looked on Wowhead for where to farm Obsidium ore, and saw that there are more Obsidium deposits in Deepholm than any other zone. In addition, Rich Obsidium deposits are apparently only found in Deepholm. So naturally I went there to farm some, but I didn't find any. A bit of Cinderbloom, lots of Hertblossom and some Elementium but not one node of Obsidium. Something's messed up.
I've spent a number of hours doing testing on zones for obsidium. The bottom line, as determined by my experience, is that Hyjal is the place to be. Something about Deepholm, even though it lists FAR more deposits of obsidium than hyjal, just isn't working.
In hyjal, I two shot the lvl 81's on my balance druid in pvp gear. I'm getting well over 200 ore per hour in hyjal. I take a large sweeping route spiraling inward from the very outer edges. I never go 100yds without seeing a deposit.
Hyjal is best, imo. I didn't like shimmering expanse. Swimming is irritating.
Best of luck.
A friend show me
cool farm rute, hope its helpfull =)
they drop rich obsidium ore and elementium ore in deepholm they are all over the place took me bout hour to have 5 stacks each.
I'm having tremendous success in Twilight Highlands on my server. I'm getting sometimes near 6-8 stacks depending on competition.
I got loads of these from fishing the Shipwreck Debris nodes on the coast of Darkmoon Island along with other high lvl mats.
By using a run through Vahj'ir for 30 minutes (~ 16:45-17:15 realm time) I was able to obtain:
195 Obsidium Ore
10 Volatile Earth
I ran the one in Shimmering Expanse, and by the time one "lap" was up, the ore had respawned. Highly recommended. Also, there was no one else there but me. I'd post a link but new users can't so just search for wow-professions and then dot com to find it.
I just wanted to help by saying that the Shimmering Expanse is amazing for farming. You do a loop and by the time you start that loop again the Ore has respawned. There is none on the outside of Nespirah so don't go around his back.
Confirming that the day after 5.1 has gone live, the Silver Tide Trench, Silver Tide Hollow, and Ruins of Thelserai Temple part of Shimmering Expanse is the best place to farm obsidium. Running this route, including little nooks to the side (don't forget the end of Trench where the Earthen Ring goblins are fighting crabs!), between 10a-11a roughly I got 10 stacks of ore as well as a few green gems and volatile earths.
Stay north of Nespirah (I found that south of her was a total bust except for the accidental acquisition of
:) ) and pretty much just run back and forth on that west to east route and back. This is also around the ER base Silver Tide Hollow (coords 50.70,41.00), which is their main base that has their quartermaster, so that should help with the 'swim paths' if you need it.
I did this with the guild perks
so YMMV (although not sure if
affects sea horse speed.)
Happy farming, and don't forget that mists recipes are available from the trainer at 500 now! That should help keep you going :)
ETA-The node spawns for the most part came up as I got back to them, and at 84 there was really only one node that had a mob too close to avoid aggroing it (damn disgusting eels! Wait, why were they 'disgusting'? I love unagi! :( )
if you looking to get this ore this is the place to gothe Silver Tide Trench. 6 stacks ten mins no bull
Bloodknell, your guide to farming Obsidium ore is spot on. Top post fella, saved me a fortune on engineering :)
You're here, So your'e looking to get this ore. The place to go is The Silver Tide Trench. 6 stacks ten mins no bull fallow this link
Still the best place as of 5.3
Best place at this time is still Vashj'ir. In 1 hour I got:
I have my own Abyssal Seahorse, so, I can do the road pretty fast. So fast that I had to wait around 30 seconds every lapse I completed, because the veins had no respawned. Good luck!
Out of all the routes I've crafted, I think the best one I've ever made was the one for Obsidium Ore.
Best place is Vashj'Ir. In the Shimmering Expanse, just go back and forth between Silvertide Hollow and Ruin of Thelserai Temple. Takes about 4 minutes and respawn rate of the nodes is 3.5 minutes.
I averaged a little over 2 stacks each time I ran it which comes out to at least 10 ores per minute.
For an explanation of how I found my routes, please see my explanations on
Ghost Iron Ore
If farming for ores in Vashj''ir it can become very monotonous and boring, but don't do what I did. As I was swimming along I nodded out for a minute, but was woken up by the sound of my toon grunting. He was at his limits and the fatigue bar was over half gone. Spinning around, I saw no land in sight. Nothing but deep, blue water. By the time I opened a map to see where I was, I was dead. I rezzed in Northern Barrens, of all places. So, now to fly back to Orgrimmar and start over again!
Dunno how much help this will be ..but here goes...This is what I do.
*Stay in Hyjal Barrow Dens...Allways spawn 2 nodes every 5-10min. Logout and do some dailys, play an Alt etc while you wait.
* Last quests in Hyjal , the one´s with the Twilight questline. DONT finish the questline. There´s ALOT of nodes spawning at that location. It will be phased. So for ppl done it, they wont see the nodes. And if you finish the questline the nodes kinda disepairs. Or atleast it wont be as much in that area.
Hope this helps a few for farming.
Sorry for bad english etc.
You're here, So your'e looking to get this ore. The place to go is The Silver Tide Trench. 6 stacks ten mins no bull fallow this link
Still the best place as of 6.0.3
Ore can be ossified into Obsidium Bars
- Guy trying to memorize vocabulary through games; don't mind me.
I'm turning my rogue into an engineer for Legion and needed 60
to level up. Everyone on Wowhead said Silvertide Trench.
It took 13 minutes to get 120
(60 bars). Knowing leveling profs never goes right, I grabbed another 40 ore, which took an additional 3 minutes.
16 minutes to make 80 bars.
You cannot beat this place.
Silvertide Trench is a great place to farm this, the loop is small, fast re-spawns, little to no mobs, specially at a high level. It's in Vashj'ir.
51.2, 34.8 Shimmering Expanse.
If you're looking to farm a good amount of these in Vashj'ir, you want to make sure you're using the Vashj'ir Seahorse mount. You might have other underwater mounts, but they will only move at 270% speed compared to 371% speed for the quest mount. It takes 10-15 minutes doing the questline for mount if you don't already have it.
Exception if you're a druid, because your travel form is much faster than any mount in Vashj'ir water.
