Again just like many of the HC 5 mans in ICC these are meant to get people on par in order to start raiding with more ease so casual players dont get left behind. This item is great for a newly starting tank and many of the other trinkets will be of great help to new 80's.
Good trinket however. nice hp boost and 3% dodge is quite nice

in 10 ToC, this has a significantly better use of the "Use" because of the inability to get a full number of stacks on bosses.

This did drop for me and I got excited at first since I'm still using essence of gossamer and black heart. However, after using it for a bit. I realized the extra dodge is nice but is only useful against melee attacks while essence is for both.

Just pointing out, the new heroics are hardly "pre-raid".
A fresh tank, in all honesty, wouldnt be able to get this. Best not to compare this to "fresh 80 trinkets" when deciding how valuable it is.
That aside, i use it on my tank and i love it. Giving up the Gossomer stam was sad, but this is more useful, as it serves both purposes. A tank very rarely only uses magic in a raid (as of right now only KT comes to mind, but then im not thinking very hard), so the dodge does come in handy. Either way, it is, in the end, just a matter of choice and preference i suppose, but tbh, you should have a considerable amount of health already (i had 34 unbuffed w/ black heart and gossamer) before you even try to tank H PoS

Is anyone else having a problem with this item? I think this is a new bug after the last patch (3.3.0a) because it didn't do this before. I was tanking Heroic Halls of Reflection. It got a little hairy with some of the zergs so i went to pop it for some health buffer (should be health "on use").
I got the error message: "Can Not Use While In Combat". I'm thinking wtf? Has anyone else experienced this recently? Was it a buggie instance server? Does it have a nerf in that particular istance? Inquiring tanks want to know...

I feel like a total "Durh...". Classic ebay-worthy mistake.

So I wanted to see how much health this trinket gave me overall using the "Use" feature every time its off cool down. This is what I determined:
Use effect gives 4104 HP for 15 Seconds every 3 mins.
(4104 HP * 15 Seconds) / 180 Seconds = 342 HP
So, if my math is correct, this trinket gives 342 HP passively (meeting the above conditions).
Then we can assume: 342 HP ~ 34 Stam. So this trinket gives about 34 Stam when using the "Use" every time time its up. Of course as tanks, there are better times for the Use effect to be used then every time you can.

This will use the thumb first before casting Last Stand, so the additional 4104 health will be part of your maximum HP to be calculated by Last Stand.

3% dodge? Dodge is subject to diminshing returns. (if this trinket bumped me from 40% to 43% id grab it so fast)
For a tank who is lacking a decent dodge % this trinket trinket is actually pretty good (for warriors and paladins).
This is isn't that great for a feral druid and ill explain why before im flamed.
Most druid gear with an ilvl of 213+ (most gear nowadays) comes with a high amount of agility on their gear, and because dodge is subject to diminishing returns, a feral druid is likely to only get 1.5-2% dodge off of this. Not worth a slot that could be filled with an armor trinket or stam trinket. The Use ability isn't very strong either, 4K bonus hp really wont make that much of a difference every 3 minutes.
HOWEVER if your a newly dinged 80 druid. Go for this because you will likely get the full 3% dodge, and thats a lot for new tank.

Why was this misinformation uprated? Dodge itself is not subjected to diminishing returns but dodge rating is. Dodge gained from agility is NOT subjected to diminishing returns.

Just got this on my warrior, and I'm having a hard time deciding whether to just stuff it in the bank or swap out my Black Heart for it. I mean, that much stam would suck to lose, and the proc is pretty rad too.

essence of gossamer is rated higher because its not JUST a 1% damage reduction. It's +111 stamina at all times as well. This trinket really ceases to impress to be honest =/
Stamina isn't the only stat important for tanking. Even if it was (and in some encounters it is), the
Essence of Gossamer
is not a good trinket. Not only are there many trinkets available with more stamina (
here's a list
, the essence of gossamer is next to last), but you're horribly overestimating the value of its proc. You can read

for more, but here's the short version:
The Essence of Gossamer has a 5% proc chance which means it'll take 20 enemy swings on average to trigger the proc. If an attack is made against you once every 2 seconds that's 40 seconds to trigger the proc. With the 45 second cooldown time the proc's uptime will be around 12% (10 seconds out of 85). In those 10 seconds the proc will absorb at most 5 hits, or 700 damage. If you have a 40% combined dodge+parry chance, it's more likely that the proc will absorb only 3 hits, or 420 damage.
Absorbing 700 damage every 85 seconds will reduce your dps taken by 8.24 (for absorbing 420 damage/85 sec the reduction is 4.94 dps). If that's equivalent to 1% damage reduction then you're only taking ~824 dps (or ~494 dps). If you're tanking a mob with any chance of killing you the damage reduction from the proc will be closer to 0.1%.
To back up what Hadrial said, my druid only gets +1.58% dodge from this. If I unequip some armor and drop from 1485 agility to 931, I still only get +1.89% dodge. Nobody should expect to get the +2.87% dodge that wowhead shows. For a druid

still comes out way ahead. With 30% uptime it averages +2.97% dodge and +2.81% crit. The passive +90 agility gives +1.29% dodge which is only 0.29 short of this trinket (but remember that agility scales with blessing of kings, dodge rating doesn't).

Not true. I think the best trinkets usually have a "use" requirement. All you need to do is create a macro, or macros, to use the trinket every time you cast a commonly used spell or ability. That way the trinket pops every time it's available.
The use on a tanking trinket is generally an "oh crap" button meant to save you when something bad happens. Smipims was correct in saying that you probably won't use this right when it comes off cooldown because you're not likely to need it right away. Creating a macro like you suggested wouldn't make sense for this. You get the best benefit from this trinket when you use it at the right time, even if that means you use it fewer times overall.
What you're suggesting sounds like better advice for DPS, but even then it doesn't always make sense. The use on a DPS trinket generally boosts dps, but you might not want to use it just because it came off cooldown. You'd want your trinket available when heroism is used. Even for dps its important to select the best times to use the trinket even if you won't be able to use it as many times per fight.

It depends on what you're doing. Most people think that stamina is the best stat for tanks regardless of what you're doing, but it really only has extra importance in certain raid fights. If you're raiding, do a little research and find out which fights you should really be stacking stamina for and which fights it's better to use an avoidance trinket for.
Survivability is always important for a tank. Just because stamina is the preferred way to boost survivability of raid tanks it isn't necessarily the best way to boost survival of all tanks. Stamina is important for a raid tank so they can soak as many consecutive hits as possible. Even with high avoidance there's still a chance that 3 or 4 consecutive hits will land. In heroics you'll be taking many weaker hits. In that situation mitigation and avoidance become more important. With decent group dps you probably won't take enough damage in a fight to die (even if no heals were cast), so the rate at which you take damage is much more important than how much total damage you can soak.
Heroics (pre-ToC ones at least) were designed to be completed by a group of people with primarily ilvl 187 gear. If your gear is mostly ilvl 226-245, think about how much more health you have than an ilvl 187-geared tank. If you think you need to wear a stamina trinket on top of that, you're crazy.
Being geared for raids is different than being geared for heroics. For example, a dps caster geared for raids is not optimally geared for heroics, they're actually far from optimally geared (to some people this is very unintuitive, even hardcore players). In raids casters need +17% hit to reach the cap, in heroics they only need +6%. A caster who is raid hit capped is wasting a lot of itemization on hit rating if they use the same gear in heroics. Similarly, a tank who has 54k health is not properly geared for H Nexus. They could swap some of their tanking gear for dps gear and the group would be better off (trinkets are good items to swap out for this since you probably don't get any defense rating from your trinkets).

Comparing this to Essence of Gossamer (Hadronox H AN), I chose the Essence as a bear druid for a few reasons.
- For me it was roughly 1.8k hp vs 1.8% dodge. As a bear tank, my diminishing returns on dodge cause it to be much less % than that of a lower geared non-druid tank.
- I've heard that ICC is more about health than dodge, and nearly 2k hp is a good chunk.
- As bear druids, Frenzied Regeneration (especially glyphed) is far more effective than this small health boost. Chances are if you've blown all your cooldowns as a bear druid, one more 10% or less temporary health isn't going to make many wins; and even if it does, that one win isn't worth sacrificing the health/minor damage reduction from Gossamer for every other fight.
- Gossamer has a damage reduction. It's not equal to 1.8% dodge, but it makes up for a good chunk of it.
Conclusion
For newer tanks, especially non-druids (namely people who are at bare minimum gear to queue for H PoS in the first place), this is a great trinket. The dodge and the health boost sees more effect/use as a lower geared tank. But for a tank moving into ICC, or most bear tanks, do not replace Gossamer with this.
Satrina's Impending Scarab
is the only trinket pre-ICC/frost that I would consider replacing Gossamer with (Faction Champs, To(G)C25), because it outmatches the stamina by a fair bit. And, of course, once you get enough Frost Emblems, then
this
will easily replace Gossamer.

I'd have to argue that this is hard for a newly lvl 80 tank to get. I have less than 9 hrs /played on my new warrior tank and i have this... any 1 that has a gear "wish list" and a little gold for some crafted items and a few friends to help them out could manage to get this pretty easily.

The proc on the
Essence of Gossamer
is terrible. I think that some tanks like stamina so much they try to justify holding onto a blue, ilvl 200 stamina trinket because it "has a good proc". This is nonsense. Let's do some math:
The Essence of Gossamer has a 45 second cooldown. The proc will be active for 10 seconds, then down for 35 seconds plus the time it takes to proc again. Let's figure out how long it will take to proc again: The proc is a 5% chance when you're hit by an attack, so on average it procs every 20 hits you take. With a 33% avoidance it'll take 30 enemy attacks to hit you 20 times. If you're tanking a single mob that attacks every 2 seconds that's 60 seconds (plus the 45 second cooldown). On average you can expect to see 10 seconds of uptime out of every 105 seconds.
The proc reduces damage by 140 for 10 seconds. If you're tanking a single mob you're only going to be hit two or three times in 10 seconds so the proc will absorb 280-420 damage every 105 seconds.
Let's see how that equates to dodge:
Still assuming the single mob you're tanking attacks every 2 seconds, if you increased your dodge by 0.08% you'd dodge an additional 0.024 attacks per minute. If you're getting hit for 10,000 damage this increase in avoidance will make you take, on average, 240 less damage per minute. 240 damage per minute is the same as 420 damage per 105 seconds.
The Essence of Gossamer's proc is equivalent to +0.08% dodge which means the 1.8% dodge you'd get from this trinket is 22.5 times better than the Essence of Gossamer's proc.
The proc sucks. The only reason to wear the trinket is for the stamina but if you're properly geared you shouldn't need stamina trinkets for most fights. If you're undergeared you might want to wear one stamina trinket to compensate for the lack of stamina on the rest of your gear. In this case
The Black Heart
is superior to the essence of gossamer: it gives you more stamina, has a much better proc, and comes from a normal instance (so you can farm ToC for it). If you need two stamina trinkets at all times you shouldn't be tanking, you should be running heroics to get emblems for better gear.

I am furios right now, you grind and grind and grind for a specific trinket then it finally drops, yes that's really nice, but a stupid ninja comes by, ninjas it and even when you try to be polite and explain that you need it more than him he writes I don't care and just leaves the party...
Blizzard need to fix this LFG system, DPS shouldn't be allowed to need on tanking gear unless the tank has pushed the greed button... Jeez >.>
