Refference to the Ashbringer "Blade of the Scarlet Highlord"
Those who have studied the writings of Nat Pagle will not be surprised to learn that the Dustbringer can be
caught while fishing
. Possibly from any pool or open water in Northrend. It's still too rare to see a pattern.
I found one from fishing a pool in Crystalsong.
*edited for clarification.*
For a level 78 weapon, and something based off such an epic blade, I'd expect it to have more that 70 dmg on hit, seriously.
Fished from Glacial Salmon Pool in Grizzly Hills around 8:20 GMT in the Bluesky Logging Grounds.
Dustbringer can only be obtained through fishing. This is an homage to player speculation (from many moons ago) that
could be fished up.
The speculation originated from
Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin'
, of which players only have the last page. The one page alleges that
discovered the location of Ashbringer. Since Nat Pagle is a fisherman, players thought that Ashbringer could be obtained via fishing.
The full copy of Nat's book,
A Thoroughly Read Copy of "Nat Pagle's Extreme' Anglin"
, can be found in
but is unreadable. Also in Dire Maul are the
, who will tell you that
will reveal the location of Ashbringer if you bring him the
Head of Nefarian
(this is not true).
You can infer that the Prince read Nat's book and discarded it in Dire Maul where we now find it. This was probably part of a quest line to obtain Ashbringer that was scrapped between when Dire Maul and
were implemented. The Shen'dralar may have been the intended reward faction for Blackwing Lair but were scrapped as well, which may explain why they have no rewards. The whole Ashbringer story has been retconned as well (it was never lost to begin with).
, retribution paladins receive Ashbringer as their artifact weapon. Blizzard made an homage to this past speculation in the Ashbringer hidden artifact quest line, which involves most of the elements above, including fishing.
Got this from the waters below Dalaran in Crystalsong forest.
I doubt the Ashbringer will EVER be available to players.
This is because, in Wotlk, it is revealed that the Ashbringer is being wielded by Highlord Tirion Fordring.
For proof, do the beginning Death Knight quest chain - the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel reveals the Ashbringer's location, much to the pleasure and then displeasure of the Lich King. It is also a vital part of your character's "redemption" from the Scourge.
It's possible that blizzard has been saving it for a future addition to the game that they've 'had on the back burner' for a while, but never came up with any good chnces to implement it, until wotlk, which sounds liekly that the real ashbringer, may be implememted in an upcoming patch. but still, the dustbringer is cliched, and the ashbringer is cool. and since the ashbringer showed up in the Dk questline, it may resurface again.
Poor Nat.. He thought he had come up with the location of Ashbringer, but all he found was... Dustbringer (I wonder how many times a day you gotta clean up your house if you posess this weapon?). Well, it was a good shot for an old fisherman. (But, what if he really found it..?)
I suppose Nat Pagle's love of the Darkmoon Special Reserve, as evidenced by its abundance at Pagle Pointe in Zul'Gurub, suggests he was particularly mortal when catching this dagger, and in his drunken stupor misread the tooltip as the legendary
, resulting in the wild goose chase as led by his Guide to Extreme Anglin'...
while fishining in the Howling Fjord (Fangtooth Herring School, obviously).
I was just idly fishing and talking to guildmates - when all of a sudden I had a blue item hooked. I never thought I'd see the Dustbringer, not to mention, catch one myself.
Looking through my statistics I noticed I had this:
Legendary Items Aquired: 1
I don't know if the dustbringer is this item or if it's just statistics gone wrong - though I have never looted any legendary item ... any confirmation from others who have obtained the Dustbringer either by fishing or trade would be nice. Mine was obtained through the auction house.
Edit: Ramona - Doh, that would explain it. I got dust on my brain too it seems... Disregard this post. :-P
Well... I guess Nat Pagle was really a true fisherman. The real catch was a little less legendary than in the tales... but you gotta do something to make a name for yourself! I loved the Nat Pagle stories and quest lines all the way no matter.
i fished this up today in borean tundra while fishing a Musselback Sculpin school in the lake with the loot crazed diver.
I fished this up yesterday in Sholazar Basin, in a School of Nettlefish.
I fished up Dustbringer from Lake Indu'le ( Dragonfin Angelfish School ) in Dragonblight, Northrend. With 580 fishing skill, but I don't know that have matter. Still I'm wondering what to do with it.....
Just fished this up on my level 11 paladin reroll. This new "fish anywhere at any level" thing is spectacular.
Haha. Well, I was in Northrend (Right near Valiance Keep) trying to fish up a sea turtle, and I randomly fished this dagger up. I was really surprised to have fished up a high level blue item! I can't really recall what school of fish I got this from, but it's the one most common for that area.
Fishing in Cyrstalsong forest in pools of Glassfin minnows, for Sea turtle mount...... got this instead. :(
Edit:WOOT! Just got it in BT Lake after two trips around the lake.
Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.
:P in case anyone needs to be referenced any further
Nat Pagle is not a fisherman...
HE'S AN ANGLER DAMNIT
I was able to nab this and some other funny/pointless items (Cow king's hide, Dark Herring) For about 100g in all.
Anyone any idea how rare these are?
Talk about stupid luck, been fishing for the Dark Herring for the last part of my Salty meta achievement and going for Sea Turtle at the same time (Fishing fangtooth herring schools) and i've found
of these, yet still no herring/turtle -_-
Both found on Cauldros Isle in Howling Fjord, fishing from schools.
Just fished one out of a Moonglow Cuttlefish pool in the Frozen Seas south of Borean Tundra. Already managed to fish up the Sea Turtle prior to finding this, but have had no luck with the Dark Herring yet.
I just fished "Dustbringer" up in the frozen sea near Unu'Pe. I caught it in a pool of man o' war. Any suggestions on what price to place on it if I were to sell it in AH?
Fished up one of these this morning from a Borean Man O' War pool by Garrosh's Landing. :)
I just caught this in open water at Winter's Breath Lake in Howling Fjord. I was fishing for the Dark Herring and what do you know, I reel up Dustbringer. :)
I had seen a couple of people report fishing it up from pools, but I just wanted to report that it can be fished up in open water.
An item only uttered in a whisper at the light of a campfire.... A legend never heard nor seen by any man who lived to tell the tale.... It has founded countless names over it's reign of chaos.... but to those who truly believe it goes by one name...............
Caught in a Nettlefish pool in Sholazar. Seems odd that with all the others reporting having fished one up that there is no source listed on Wowhead. Good hunting!
Curse me for trying to bring a legitimate question into this but... anyone know the proc rate of this weapon?
Oh gosh, me myself I fished hours and days in desperate hope to find ashbringer one day, in Tanaris at Steamwheedle port... because that little gnome told me!
Later on I at least got my sultan's head when I was becoming a scarab lord.
just bought this on my server moonrunner. Was on AH for 10000gold so I mailed the person offering 7500. She said ya but when she went to get it, it was sold. Next day I saw It up for 30k so I mailed them offering half that and got it. Havent seen it in years. Mainly to complete my fishing collection.
Why did you do this to us Blizzard?
The flavor text on this thing is amazing.
I spend the last 2 days fishing for this beauty and finally got my hands on it. The drop rate is very low indeed, took several thousands casts to fish it.
The best place to get this item might be Caldemere Lake, north of
There is no mob to disturb you
You can loop around the lake and fish in
you can fish
(unlocking the achiev
) as well as
, cool looking fish dagger (sadly can't transmogrify) and part of the achiev
If you want this baby, either be patient or try your chance on the AH, but according to The Undermine Journal, you might as well go fish.
