Commonly skinned by the raptors at Un'Goro crater. Skinned always 1 thick leather off each raptor. So could make a nice grinding if able to 2-shot those beasts.
I can imagine every other beast there has thick leather too when skinned.

The Incendosaur cave in Searing Gorge is another great place to obtain these, along with an occasional Thick Hide or Rugged Leather. The Incendosaurs respawn fairly quickly, and unless you are concerned with Thorium Brotherhood reputation, you can auction or vendor off the
Incendosaur Scales
to make some additional coin.

I've just been farming for thick leather, for about 1,5 hours. I farmed in Tanaris. In the beginning near Gadgetzan, but for a higher dropchance and more xp I decided to go more south (after about 20 minutes).
The result of this 1,75 hour farming is:
Thick Leather x93
Rugged Leather x15
Thick Hide x6
After a while, I found a very, very nice place to farm for thick leather. Near Dunemaul compound, there is a place, with lots of rabid blisterpaws. These mobs don't drop many items, so you don't need to empty your bags as much as with other mobs.
In these 1,5 hours I wasn't in a hurry. It was just taking my time, mostly auto shot only and sometimes an arcane shot. I really recommend this place for farming thick leather, especially when you're around lvl 45-50. These mobs are lvl 47-48 and are quite concentrated, although they're just far away enough from each other, so you don't get two or even more mobs on you at the same time.

As a level 59 rogue I found the Den of Flame to be much more beneficial to farm Thick Leather than than the Rage Scar Yeti found in Feralas.
For one, the dragonkin in Dustwallow are levels 38-41, while the Yeti are around 47 and therefore slower to kill.
Secondly, I found the Dragonkin mostly dropped two Thick Leather at a time, with the occasional Heavy Leather or heavy/thick hide (or worn dragonscale). The Yeti only ever drop 1 Thick Leather for me, or the occasional Rugged Leather.
While Rugged Leather is nice to pick up, it's relatively useless when I can only use Thick Leather to level my leatherworking ;)
EDIT:
duathorthad:
I'd have to say that as a rogue I found the dragonkin far worse than the yeti caves. Their fire shield debuff breaks stealth, and in addition they have a fire based immolate attack which means you cant very quickly stealth/vanish without it breaking. All of this was a slow down really, so yetis were far easier.
I never actually had a problem with fire shield debuffs, or any kind of DoT preventing stealth/vanish.
It might be that you went at a lower level, I do remember when I was in my low to mid 40s the Dragonkin at the Den of Flame were pretty anti-rogue, but at level 59 for me, I feel they're the best option I've found so far.
Fast respawn rate, too.

Ok I came to the comments on here and honestly tried each one out and they all took a pretty long time to get anywhere with it, and I honestly found the best place ever. Outside Onyxia's lair there's dragonkin and it just so happens there's like a circular path you can take to constantly kill the dragonkin I mean yea you get heavy leather here and there and the occasional dragon scale but the drop rate for the thick leather by far is the best. Start off in fron of onxia's lair mouth entrance til ur all the way behind it and back in front of it agai they will all be respawned and you'll be able to keep farming them constantly. I'm going to try and include a picture showing the route to take and I have easily farmed 100+ thick leather in an hour here, and also heavy leather drops shouldnt really bother any lw's considering you can turn the heavy into thick.
If anyone finds any better than the ones above or mine plz let me know I'm having to start over again on my LW and it;s a pain!

As a 67 farming DK alt, Den of Flame was slow in respawning, and provided almost as much heavy as thick leather. For something to do during respawn time, I went and killed some raptors around their cave, but they provided mostly heavy leather too.
Rage scar hold drops less thick leather per yeti, but there are more yetis around and they drop rugged too.
It's hard to tell which nets more or which has more downtime waiting for respawns - I'm thinking the yetis are, as long as you remember to clean out the cave itself, in front of it, and up the trail above it.
(When you run into the yeti cave, clear up the top ledge and then jump down, you can grab the stray ones on the run back out, so it won't feel like so much empty running around <.<)

best place i found is sunken temple.
when you enter the instance go to your left and up(or down i don't remember) untill your at the tunnel and see a group for 5-7 dragonkins.
kill them and head for the main big room where every coridor has a group or 3 of dragonkins.
80% of the skining gives 1-2 thick hide
10% gives green/white dragonscales
10% gives rugged leather.
i did this at 71 :) feral dr00d and it went pretty smooth.
as soon as your done go to entrance and reset again and after 2-4 resets you will have like 10 to 14 stack ( i had 14) of thick leather 3 stacks of dragonscales and 5 stacks of rugged leather
and again this is prolly for 65+ players

My favourite spot is the beach at the south of tanaris. There are plenty of
Surf Glider

It's not the most efficient way to get thick leathers, but it's very fun (this is for high levels that can easily solo Sunken Temple.)
Upon entering, stay on the middle level and move around and kill the troll mini-bosses. When the shield on Jammal'an goes down, jump down to where the dragonkin are and make your way to him. Some form of stealth or avoiding the mobs is very useful here.
Kill Jammal'an (be warned, all the trolls in that room will agro when you attack). The Shade of Eranikus will become attackable now. Make your way to him. This next part is way more fun if you can avoid agroing any of the dragonkin, but you might want to kill the two dragon mini-bosses in the room right before him.
Now for the fun part. When you kill Eranikus, all the dragonkin that you didn't kill will agro and move to attack you. All of them. Tear into them and have fun giggling as you destroy all of them.
Afterwords, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes looting and skinning all the corpses, but you'll make out like a bandit and it's a very fun way to farm for Thick Leather.

A good spot for anyone who has a high level would be Sunken Temple. As you enter just head left up to the green dragonkin floor.
I was getting about 60 thick leather, 20 rugged leather and 15 dragon scales per run, at about 10 minutes per run. The only downside is the limit of instances you can enter per hour.

As a level 80 Subtlety Rogue with Shadowstep, Preparation and Glyph of Sprint (Increases run speed by another 30%, making it the same speed as an epic ground mount), I found Un'Goro Crater to be an amazing area for my Thick Leather farming. Roughly ~20 minutes spent running around the same route and never having any problems with mobs not having time to respawn I managed to gather the following;
160 Thick Leather
14 Thick Hide
51 Rugged Leather
1 Devilsaur Leather
5 Greenies, including an Alchemy recipe and Blacksmithing pattern.
Various vendor trash that I sold for approximately 20g!
And last but not least, I gained 41 skills in Skinning (from 300 to 341).
For such a short period of farming, I would say that the outcome was quite alright! The mobs were gathered closely enough that I could easily just jump from mob to mob and never waste downtime running around looking for respawns - I also never had to mount up since
if
(rare occassions though) the closest mob happened to be out of sight, I would just sprint and/or Shadowstep to it.
I would definately recommend this area to any Skinners in need of Thick Leather!
I'd just like to add a few notes:
-The mobs I was farming were the different types of Ravasaurs found in a rather big area around the entrance to Un'Goro from Tanaris.
-The Ravasaurs themself
do not
drop any gold whatsoever, but plenty enough vendor trash to cover for that.
-I probably ended up deleting 300+ "
A Mangled Journal
" (Unique item that starts a quest, will keep dropping unless you've completed it) as I had never quested in Un'Goro, this was simply a slight annoyance since the Journal dropped every 3rd-5th mob but it was no big deal and I don't feel it slowed me down that much.
I hope you found this post at least somewhat helpful and happy hunting! (or skinning?)

I can confirm that the
Rage Scar Yeti
found in Feralas (Coordinates: 50, 32;
Map
) has a good "drop/skin" rate for around level 35. This way you'll get experience as you farm.
The coordinates lead you to where you first start seeing them but there is a cave that has an abundance of them as well. They sometimes drop
Silk Cloth
as well as a little bit of currency (~1s on average for each one). However sometimes when you skin them you'll get
Heavy Leather
and
Heavy Hide
so don't expect
Thick Leather
every time.
On a lighter note, they have an insanely fast respawn time, as you kill them; Meaning the more you kill them a Yeti has to take it's place somewhere. All in all it's constant farming with NO down time. Also you can either choose to sell the
Heavy Leather
you get or use 6 of them to create 1
Thick Leather
. Either way you win. :)
If you're around 50 or so, a very good place would be the
Un'Goro Gorilla
,
Un'Goro Stomper
and
Un'Goro Thunderer
found in Un'Goro Crater (Coordinates: 61, 17;
Map
). Not only do you get experience and
Thick Leather
but you'll be getting
Rugged Leather
as well which you'll use to further increase your Leatherworking.
Good luck!

I found Un'Goro Crater to be a great source of Thick and Rugged leather. I've been here about 25 minutes and just killing Diemetradons & Pterrordax I got 65 Thick Leather and 27 Rugged. Also 3 Thick Hides and 4 Rugged. Great, plenty of monsters and with the spawn rate once you finish killing some you can loop around and start again.

Billy Goats in Badlands are great if you are still using Heavy Leather and are closing in on the use of Thick Leather.
But if you are already using Thick Leather and closing in on Rugged Leather I would recommended Burning Steppes, the western and eastern area is filled with skin-able mobs and works best if you need several other items as well.
Tender Wolf Meat
and
Red Wolf Meat
from the Wolfs helped me with my cooking; or if you're cooking is lower than those,
Mystery Meat
from the Scorpids. If you don't need any cooking materials, the numerous Dragonkin also drops a fair amount of cloth you can sell on the auction house.
And they're always abundant, and you might come across a free 25 unskinned corpses, since all skinable corpses in the Burning Steppes are also part of quests.

Everything has been changed around a bit after "The Shattering" / Cataclysm.
I farmed Thick Leather from Diemetradon's and Yound Diemetradon's in Un'Goro Crater just beneath Marshal's Stand, and found this to be an effective way for me. The spawn rate is mediocre but since there's quite a few of them I never needed to wait, ie., have downtime.
Tactic: Kill a lot of them, then skin them - in the meanwhile they'll respawn and you can continue.
Took me 40minutes for 21 stacks = 420 Leathers
Hope it helped! :)

Nope, 45 Scorpids in Tanaris are still "heavy". Moving on to Un'Goro to check the Raptors and other Dinos.
46+ Serpents in Tanaris = Heavy, 46+ Hyenas = Heavy, 46+ Scorpids = Heavy.
Seems like 46+ is the key ;) G'luck finding good spots with a lot of skinnable 46+ mobs :)

I was much more successful here. With a little bit of rugged leather (which will be useful later), I got quite a bit of thick leather.

best spot to farm Thick Leather as of patch 4.0.6... definitely:
Badlands, west of New Kargath
the canyon there is full of dragon whelps, with really fast respawn
they drop nearly 100% Thick Leather, rarely Rugged Hide... and no dragon scales!
at least for me when i farmed there none droped...
they drop always just 1 Thick Leather
the only two downsides are...
1. they will 90% of the time attack from a distance as they are ranged casters
2. the terrain there is made for cliffhanger :/
anyway... if you dont like that spot... just hunt the beasts in the badlands... they drop the Thick Leather aswell and can be often killed by 2-4 at once...
for better orientation

All along the North-East of Burning Steppes are Giant Ember Worgs and Black Dragonkin which drop good amounts of both and are easy kills. They spawn fast and are pretty dense, so minimal running between mobs. Infact, their spawn rate is so fast, you can go up and down the area infinitely.

I strongly suggest (as some have mentioned) the Raging Whelps *east* of Kargath. These are mixed in with Darkflight Soldiers, which also drop Thick Leather when skinned.
Pros:
* Large area with high mob density
*
Chance for Dark Whelpling minipet drop
(still worth a good chunk of gold)
* Mobs are just far apart enough to not interrupt your skinning with aggro
* Easy to get to: short flight from SW for Alliance, or from the Org -> Blasted Lands portal for Horde.
* When the mobs DON'T drop Thick leather, they drop Rugged instead of Heavy, which is useful after you're done using Thick for your Leatherworking.
* They don't respawn too quickly (unlike Nyxondra's broodlings) for lowbies.
Cons:
* If you're a lowbie, avoid the elite drake who patrols the area--he has a bit over 9k hp.
* They aren't as closely clustered for level 85s (for AoE purposes) as the Nyxondra's broodlings.

Best Place as of Cataclysm to Farm Thick Leather - patch 4.2
Ok i found an insanely easy spot to farm this stuff uber quick, even more so for druids. In the badlands, just west of New Kargath, you find a really hilly area covered in
Nyxondra's Broodlings
.
Pros:
These things are pretty well grouped, and respawn insanely fast. I was pulling literally 20-30 mobs at a time and I never got close to running out of mobs slaughter. They dropped Thick Leather about 80% with some rugged. Bonus: They have a chance of dropping
Dark Whelpling
(mine dropped on 570th-ish kill ^_^).
Cons:
They all mostly spam fireball and if you are a melee class this can make it hard to pull large amounts into tight groups. Also, even though many of the pits and hills in the area seem to take you out of their LoS, they can shoot straight through mountainside (you can too though...). Also the terrain can make it hard to get to kills and skin them in a couple spots, flying eases this burden a little.
What Worked For Me:
Using a lvl 64 resto druid, I would cycle targets as I spammed moonfire till i had a big circle of whelps dying from the DoT. Switched into flight form (so hills and pits weren't such a problem) and then went in a circle looting/skinning ..
What I Got:
End of First Hour: 241 Thick Leathers, 37 Rugged Leathers, 7 Thick Hides
End of Second Hour: 543 Thick Leathers, 58 Rugged Leathers, 17 Thick Hides and a Dark Whelpling

1 green
1 blue
Comments:
On a hunter 80, aspect of the cheetah.
Didn't use aoe
Casters / ranged attacks, make sure you 2-shot kill them, so they come to you.
Greys don't worth the trip to vendor, throw them away.

In about 30 minutes I managed to get:

36 Rugged Leather
11 Thick Hide
This was as an 85 hunter, with the Bountiful Bags guild perk, and I only ran through the hive once, by the time I got back to the circular room all of them had respawned :)

Hands down without a single doubt in Tenaris - at The Gaping Chasm, you will find lvl 45 bugs that drop Thick Leather almost 100% of the time, with the exception of a few Rugged Leather here and there. I have tried Ungoro, I got heaps of Rugged little bit of Thick, tried the Unearthed Fossil skeleton things in Tenaris as suggested by Wowhead itself, but they are very scarce and limited in numbers and re spawns. The Gaping Chasm is by far the best drop and re spawn rate around. On my lvl 69 druid, its almost a one shot for the bugs and easy leather collection! Try it out guys you wont be disappointed! (unless of course Blizzard nerfs it -.- )
Good Luck Farming :)
edit: Just so you can see the drop rate, I did a screen shot :)

The Gaping Chasm in Tanaris is amazing! Has to be one of the best places to farm Thick Leather. After reading this I tried all of Dustwallow Marsh first and had mixed results (I received a ton of Heavy Leather, but Thick Leather was only maybe 1 in 5 mobs), but then I tried Gaping Chasm and had racked up 300 in no time. The bugs drop 1-4 nearly every single time and they are everywhere, if you go inside the largest cavern in the middle there is even a room with over 25 mobs squeezed together, as 85 you can round them all up and take em out with one shot, makes farming easy.

The Gaping Chasm
in Tanaris allows for very efficient farming. You can farm up to 180 skins per hour, and half of the time you can go AFK and do RL stuff. There are about 25 bugs in one room (54.5 by 72.5) that you can easily kill and loot/skin in 4 minutes and who will be back 6 minutes later. No running around (unless you want to kill the bugs in the adjacent rooms).

The best place to farm this is off The broodlings in the Badlands, plus there is a chance for a Dark Whelpling drop!

Badlands just outside of New Kargath/Dragon's Mouth is a pretty decent spot. These mobs dropped a little too much rugged leather for my liking, but still, they are on a fast respawn timer, so that helped.
If you are at level, there is an elite dragon flying near this area, so keep your eyes peeled.
Also discovered that the mobs just outside the Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood are pretty good for farming thick leather. They're fairly well-grouped, and spawn reasonably fast.

With the advent of AoE looting in patch 5.0.4,
Blackrock Depths
is unquestionably the best place to farm thick leather. If you are 85+ you can easily pull every
Bloodhound
on the upper floor. Start in
Bael'gar's
hall, then make a circuit of both circular tunnels. Be sure to grab the packs walking through the large cavern. Finish by running inside the supply area (don't forget to check the side rooms for dogs) and stop on
High Interrogator Gerstahn
. The entire pack will follow you the whole time and you can AoE them down in just a few seconds. On my poorly geared DK, a single run takes almost exactly 10 minutes to pull, kill, and skin. Better geared characters might be able to do it faster, although if you go any faster than that you will run into the hourly instance limit.
My average take per run after 2 hours of farming (10 runs) is as follows:
50
Thick Leather
20
Rugged Leather
1-2
Thick Hide
12-15 gold in vendor trash
50
Runecloth
2-3 greens
These results are with the
Bountiful Bags
guild perk.
I can't find a place that has a higher output than that, including
Nyxondra's Broodlings
.

As a new Monk
, my preferred method is Blackrock Depths, for a few reasons:
Leather:
If you do -just- the cellblock, I averaged roughtly 35~ pieces of various leather (thick, rugged) per every 5 minutes.
Reputation:
Using instance tabards, I am picking up some reputation along the way.
Runecloth and other sellables:
Leveling first aid, or more leather via selling on the AH
Other choices may be more efficient, but I found BRD to be incredibly useful
Take the long road to Bael'Gar and then run around and through the detention block, or just stick to the detention block. I prefer the second.

The Bloodhounds in BRD are great for this. Pull the whole loop by
High Interrogator Gerstahn
killing any dwarves that aggro, then the whole loop by
Lord Roccor
. Finally pull all of the hounds you've collected to the room with
Houndmaster Grebmar
. Aggro the hounds in there, aoe and spend a few minutes skinning a ton of leather. Zone out, reset, repeat. No waiting for respawns.

With so many conflicting opinions here, I decided to do a short farm in each area most suggested.
I farmed near New Kargath for exactly 10 minutes as a level 90 elemental shaman.
I killed all dragon type mobs including the elite, and picked all herbs I passed.
I had:
9 rugged leather
37 thick leather
2 thick hide
7 mageweave cloth
1 golden sansam
1 firebloom
4 sungrass
Plus trash loot, the value of which was 1g 28s 9c.
Next I cleared Sunkern Temple, including two mobs outside the entrance and all of the troll mobs. This took me more than 10 minutes.
I had:
29 rugged leather
19 thick leather
15 green dragonscales
4 worn dragonscales
6 thick hides
10 runecloth
And trash loot (I'm including any BOP items in this as they're worthless to my shaman) totalling to 23g 22s
I farmed Terror Run in Un'Goro for exactly 10 minutes, killing all manner of dinosaur beasties and got:
24 rugged leather
20 thick leather
1 green boe
and 1g 67s 11c in trash
If you're after thick leather, I'd suggest stick to Kargath. If you're borderline and need rugged too, head for Un'Goro. ST takes too much time for the loot you get.

The Noxious Lair in Tanaris is a great spot for Thick Leather and Rugged Leather. They spawn either in groups of 3 or walk around alone. Lvl ~45 mobs. They can be skinned for 1-5 Thick Leather and 1-4 Rugged Leather (according to my experience)
Wasn't aware of the Kargath place, but if I had known that earlier I probably would've farmed there though, based on the comments here on wowhead.

The Blood Hounds in BRD are great for Thick Leather, with a rate of 83% and you often get 2 pieces. The detention block and Houndmaster Grebnar a bit further in is what you want to go for. The Houndmaster has several packs of them in the same room and is a skinner's dream. When you're done, get out and reset, repeat.

If you've done the quests for gaping chasm in Tanaris, you've seen the one room teaming with skinnable bugs, dropped almost exclusively Thick Leather w/ good respwan rate... I was lvl 47 at the time so I cleared part of the room, the other side would be repawning.

One of the greatest places I found is Felwood.Just kill every beast you find bears, wolfs, stags they all give you thick leather especially the stags(the always give thick while the others may give rugged)
the best spot is east & NE of Whisperwind grove

Blackrock Depths is by far the best spot. You get ~55
Bloodhounds
in a convenient sling ending up with about 50 thick leathers per ~9 minute run (mostly skinning time).
My sling:
Map Link
Grabs around 55 bloodhounds in an optimized no-backtrack sling. Then just run to the exit where there is a convenient vendor to sell the trash.
Each run averages at around 50 thick leather, 8 rugged leather, 50 runecloth, 160 dark iron residue and ~5-10g of vendor trash (although lots of tender wolf meat and red wolf meat + greens you might want to sell)
Did this as a lvl 85 Enhancement Shaman only using Earthbind (dwarves like to flee on low health) + Magma totem, so more dps could perhaps shave off a minute or so.

I needed to farm thick leather in a hurry so I went to a spot around 41,35 in Felwood (spot right under the "W" in Whisperwind Grove on the map). I made my way a bit to the NE around 43,44 (spot around the "G" and "R" in Grove on the map). I found many
邪能腐化巨角鹿
and
魔爪食腐狼
along with a few
疯狂的蝙蝠
. I skinned lots of Thick Leather and some Rugged Leather. Respawn rate was maybe a few minutes. I just went back and forth between the two spots. Great place to farm the thick leather. Good Luck!

And all I can say is that I allways been farming the yetis @ winterspring (cave @ about 65,53) around that.
They drop both Thick and Rugged leather.
Good respawn etc. Great place for Leatherworkers at that skill level.

A great place to farm this is in Tanaris. The Gaping Chasm: 41,61, inside the hive. When you get to the center of the hive there is, a whole room of Hazzali swarmers, workers and sandreavers. The re spawn rate isn't too bad. They drop: thick hide, rugged leather and heavy leather as well. Happy farming :)

If you don't want questers in the way and not looting their kills, bypass the headache and go to Winterspring. Frostsaber Rock and surrounding area is a dead area with a ton of cats to skin. Thick and Rugged leather is found there.

+++ This is for quest leveling and profession leveling. There are many other great places much better at farming for these and other perks, but if you're like me and you want to do quests, level up your professions, and get some extra xp/gold, then here is a suggestion. I leveled my Hunter with pet in Zone: Dustwallow Marsh, at the Wrymbog area. I started at Mudsprocket and traveled down south to the electric sign pointing to Thousand Needles and Mudsprocket. I then traveled along the valley of the mountains, killing everything, searing hatchlings, searing whelps, Drywallow Daggermouths, Firemane Scalebanes, Firemane Flamecallers, Firemane Scout, and Fireman Ash Tail, and even encountered the Elite Scorchscale Drake. Follow in a northeastern direction along the valley until you come an opening where you can see Tidefury Cove. Follow the swamp around where hilly terrain will be on your right. On the Worldmap, you should just be on top of the Wrymbog words. Keep traveling in a southeastern direction past the Giant Darkfang Spiders and you'll see a large dragon head skeleton. Keep following the swamp, you should be walking along the Dragonmurk and Wyrmbog areas. Keep following until you run back into the road that leads you to Mudsprocket. Follow South until you reach the road sign and repeat as neccesary. In 30 min, as a lvl 44 Hunter with pet in tow, these were my results:
62-Heavy Leathers; 28 Thick Leathers; 26 Silk Cloths, 12 Tender Crockolisk Meat, 3 Heavy Hides, and Various junk items like fishbones, mysterious meats and a few weaponry and armor that are grey items.
Hope this helps, most of the comments were high level farming, this is for anyone who is currently leveling and gathering mats. Hope it was helpful.+++

Sunken Temple is amazing for Thick/Rugged Leather.
What you do is run around the walls, collecting all the drakes along the wall and hall entrances and remember to do a ranged attack in the halls leading to Jammal and the Wardens to pick up a few extras. Once you have everything, run back to the entrance and run around a corner and you're done.
(Time) Took me 1 min to gather them all and 2 to skin them all. Times may vary, pending on class and pratice.
Within those 3 mins I gathered an adverage of 20/5 thick leather/hides and 35/3 Rugged leather and hides.

For those who are NOT skinners like me (my current toon is an engineer and prices in the AH are outrageous) I found the best source is fishing up
Mithril Bound Trunk
in Swamp of Sorrows. I started at Bogpaddle in the north and I didn't even get to the southern end of the zone before I had fished up 4-5 trunks from pools with 8-10 pieces total in them.

a point of order and update to this thick leather wowhead post. it appears to be inaccurate now in regards to comments of farming locations. badlands farming is only yieldeing rugged for me lvl 58, to get thick leather I have to farm western plaguelands no other spots is yielding much and taking 4 to 5 ties as long and even western plagulands isn't that great of a spot but compared to alternatives. the new level system introduced with bfa threw everything in the crapper

Sunken Temple will give you more Rugged Leather than Thick Leather, but even so it's an extremely effective farm spot. You're certainly not gonna get more anywhere else. There's also BoE zone drops in ST, that are worth a lot of gold.

The best success I have had with thick leather in 8.2 bfa is in the Misty Reed Strand area of Swamp of Sorrows. There are turtles that spawn along the river and Stagabalog serpents flying around the land between. The turtles are more likely to drop thick leather but the flying serpents do also; otherwise, they drop rugged leather.
Sawtooth crocilisks and swampstriders closer to Bogpaddle also may drop either.

These respawn super fast and as long as your skinning is at a high enough level for thick hides to drop (I think around 200) you should get about 300/hr.

I like Dire Maul North. Go in, pull all the hyenas, aoe them in one spot, skin them all, takes 2 minutes tops, half thick half heavy, with some random hides strewn in. Run out and reset instances.
Not the most efficient due to the 10 instances per hour limit but it's quick and easy.

If you're also a battle pet collector, might as well farm for the dark whelplng (Nyxondra's Broodlings) just west of Kargath in the badlands. Majority skin for thick leather and respawn fast enough to farm endlessly. It's 1/1000 drop but you might get lucky.
