This staff is so sick, it looks amazing, the stats are good, I'm not sure I understand the Crit though... the Spire of sunset seems like it would be better for healers because it has haste, but the Mp5 makes it seem more like a caster item as compared to the spirit of this weapon, overall however this staff is pretty awesome, would go well with the "New Dreamwalker" set.

I do not want to break your bubble guys, but now a lot more casters can benefit of spell crits, as well as spirit. Just to cite a few examples: holy priests now use spell crits for Holy Concentration (free and faster casting), Spell Surge (free and instant cast flash heals), Test of Faith (improve the other crit based talents quite generously) and the obvious Inspiration (25% more armor) which work with aoe healing. And there's rumors about sharing the priest spell crit to the shadow fiend, which would result in more mana return.
The days of Spell Crits only useful to DPS casters are at its end.

Spirit isn't a healer only stat anymore. Warlocks get 30% of their spirit added onto thier spellpower with Fel Armour up.
That may be true, but healers benefit much more from spirit than either affliction warlocks or arcane mages.
These being the only two caster dps that actually benefit from spirit the most as far as I know. Not to mention that the benefits are arguable compared to their traditional stats.
So when it come to choosing between raid health and longevity or your epeen ranking on the porn meter of dps. just think do you want your healers to go oom because you keep needing on their spirit gear?

The mana pool you get from this staff is amazing. If you have talents which increase your total INT (f.e. Furor in Moonkin form), you might consider taking this staff... Also if you want more benefits from Replenish (0.25% of total mana recovered per second).
Still, if you arent in the hit cap, maybe a MH+OH Combo like
Haunting Call
+
Accursed Spine
might be even better. If you want to compensate the loss of INT, you can add a
Enchant Weapon - Major Intellect
or maybe go for the raw DPS enchants...
Oh well... its up to you and how you want to solve you needs...

I managed to get this beauty in a 25 Man OS pug that I run weekly on my server, Living seed has been popping like crazy since than. The days when Spirit and Crit was segregated by class roles are long gone, now it's a preference of play style.
Druids dislike spamming hots or MT healing? Crit/haste is nice.
All these casters benefiting from spirit? Spirit is nice (I'm looking at you, warlocks!)

Imho this is a very good staff for pretty much all casters, with the addition of healing priests and druids due to it stacking heavily on our most required stats, as well as chipping in with some crit for good measure.
Some might say that Druids least of all need crit, but well, it does come in handy for when we shell out Nourish, Swiftmend, Regrowth or let our LB finish it's duration. Even healing touch crits are nice, though that will probably be overkill unless you're terrible at healing and let your tank drop to 1% before landing a HT crit taking him above 50% again :P
Living Seed and Nature's Grace decreases our casting time by .5 seconds which means that all heals with casting time will land quicker, and they might also crit. Which means we're getting into a nice pattern with quicker and harder heals.
Such a shame that Blizzard decided to headhunt niche items and force everyone to go for the same items (nearly).. Tsk. Why not give rogues the option of wielding two-handers while you're at it? Or make a healing class that relies on attack power and hit rating? Meh.

Dropped for me (holy priest) last night. A few mages and a boomkin were not very pleased about it (we had no warlocks but I bet they would have been mad too), but I agree with previous posts. I'm seeing a lot of use for crit with holy priests. For starters, clearcasting is based off crit, as does Test of Faith. Holy priests probably shouldn't be looking to stack a LOT of crit, not like say a fire mage or ele shaman might, but it is very useful. Plus the fact that it has a lot of spirit on it means I can enchant it with Spellpower to feed raw healing done.
Edit: According to dwarfpriest.com, this is the best staff currently in game for a holy priest.

As a Holy Priest, this is quite possibly the best staff out there (pre-patch). It offers you the vital stats you need in intellect, spirit, and crit.
Damnation (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40348
) staff comes a close second which drops off of the 4 horsemen in heroic Naxx.
If you are going to pass on a MH/OH, Staff of Restraint is your best bet.

This is by far best staff for holy priests, by FAR.
The insane int and spirit on this makes it more than worth it, not to mention the crit on it.
in my oppinion it has way too much spirit for a dps caster, sure they (dpser) can use spirit.. but any self respecting caster DPSer knows there are better stats than spirit for them.
As the warlock how passed this on me said "I don't want your silly spirit"
And yeah it drops from 25-man sartharion, no lesser dragons alive needed.

@csgrimm
Mate, seriously. You obviously know only the basics of Priesting these days, because you're getting a bit kerfuffled there.
I hope you just made the wrong links there, or, as someone above suggested, you are simply having a laugh.
For your comparison:
Greatstaff of the Nexus
101 stamina (meh, who cares, perhaps warlocks?)
77 intellect (pretty sub standard in comparison to Restraint)
3% hit (useless to a Holy Priest)
3.5% haste (nice, granted)
408 spell power (not bad, but their are heroic and/or crafted 1h maces with the same or better)
over
Staff of Restraint
85 stamina (-16 compared to nexus, stamina is not a big worry for Priests)
108 intellect (+31 over nexus, translates as a much bigger mana pool, and converts to crit as well)
84 spirit (Spirit IS addtional spell power with spiritual guidance, AND regen)
1.5% crit (see below)
461 spell power (more than Nexus, in addition to the spell power granted by the 84 spirit)
So, more spell power, much more regen, more intellect, a nice douse of crit and the usual dollop of stamina. What is not to like about Restraint as a priest? It is far superior in comparison to Nexus, they aren't even in the same ball-park, and suggesting otherwise on this forum, I would venture, is not going to change the minds of the Priests in your guild that know a good thing when they see it. For me personally, I'm still waiting on this bad boy to drop. When it does, I will happily shell out my dkp for it, and I will be laughing all the way to the enchanter. Regarding the lack of haste on this staff, apparently the only valid point you made: I couldn't careless. There is a rumour floating around that you can gem for it. Who woulda thunk it?
In closing, you may see i mention crit often in a favourable light, before you make the mistake of laughing at Holy Priests rolling on items with crit, because its for dps. Let me refresh your knowledge on the subject:
Inspiration:
increase target armour by 25% upon spell crit for 15 seconds.
Surge of Light:
50% chance for the next flash heal to be mana-free upon spell crit. Free heals!
Holy Concentration:
40% chance upon any GH, FH, BH crit for next GH, FH, BH to be mana-free. More free heals!
Improved Holy Concentration:
+15% (55% in total) chance upon any GH, FH, BH crit for next GH, FH, BH to be mana-free and increase your spell haste by 30%. Even more free heals, now with added haste!
Now, granted, not all Holy Priests spec all of these talents to the max, except of course inspiration, but the benefits of crit are pretty substantial now for us Holy Priests. That's why you see it on 3 out of the 5 set pieces.
Regards and apologies to my Disc. cousins, I am not so well versed on your tree, and I am in know way suggesting this is more a holy than a disc item. In fact, I would like to point out at this stage, I am not suggesting this is a better item for a Holy Priest over any other class. Just simply, at this stage of the game, it is a tremendous item, that suplements a Holy Priest in many, many ways.
Okay. Happy healing!

Wait... a
MAGE
seriously got butthurt by not getting this item over a healer? Sorry, but I have to ask an obvious question...
WHY
? There are FAR better alternatives currently available that are suited to a mage's needs, items without such a huge pool of spirit - spirit that could benefit raid healers, (and yes, a couple select dps classes... neither of which is a mage.).
Personally, I
do
feel this staff is likely to benefit a resto druid or holy priest the most. That being said, let me point out that warlocks & boomkins could also make full use of this item, being that both gain additional spell power spirit. But this item clearly is NOT a mage staff - if it were, there wouldn't be such a huge pool of spirit on it, plain & simple. Yes, it may have a ton of intellect, and yes, plenty of delicious crit, but newsflash: ALL casters can make use of intel & crit, healers & dps alike. Mages need spirit about as much as healers need to stack hit rating to heal; simply put, such a huge pool would be a pure waste for a mage, especially when other classes could benefit so greatly. And frankly, any mages who cry over losing this to a healer, or even to a lock or boomkin, need to suck it up & face facts: this staff does NOT belong in a mage's hands as a priority. I suppose in the unlikely event that every member of the above viable classes who'd actually benefit most either didn't want it, or already had it, or maybe if by some act of God a raid lacked ALL of the above mentioned classes/specs and still somehow managed to kill Sarth, then MAYBE I could see giving it to a mage... In other words, a mage who's alone in wanting/needing it, or as the alternative to it being DE'd, are probably the most viable reasons a mage should have priority on this staff. Aside from that, any mage who believes they have as much use for it as holy priests, resto or boomkin druids or locks do needs to do two things:
(1) go back to MAGE101, maybe learn a bit more about the basics of their class, maybe research theory crafting a bit more; and
(2) learn to share with others playing with you in the sandbox. In the long run, it'll end up benefitting you & everyone you're raiding with anyway.
Well, enough ranting... just felt i needed to put in my 2 cents, whatever it's worth.
Oh, and a few words for the priest who actually DID win the staff::BRAVO! As a T7 raiding warlock myself, allow me to offer you a big "CONGRATS!" on obtaining such a hawt acquisition! (And, for the record, I personally would likely pass that staff to a priest or resto druid rather than taking it myself, or at the very least would discuss it to find out who would benefit most from the upgrade. The way I see it, if it's an item I REALLY want or need, I'll probably get it eventually. )
Anyway, I'm happy it ended up with someone who can make the most of it - ENJOY! =D

This dropped in a heroic mode PUG with all three Drakes up.
It is the only slot I currently have as a priest filled with a crit item but gets me to just over 20% raid buffed though which is awfully nice for any of my talents that utilize it.
For holy priests, this 2H is currently the best in the game and
dwarfpriest
seems to agree.

I'd also like to ask everyone, as a warlock, would this staff be optimal or should I kindly not roll and let other's take it? That is, in comparison with other staves or 1h/frill, what would be the suggested best. I've searched and heard mixed reviews.
Optimal? the only things that are optimal are Naxx drops and Deadly - so unless you have one of those - it is worth the roll. I just picked this up today and it has better all around stats than my Flameheart Scalpel
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44173
+ Ward of the Violet Citadel Offhand
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40698
Despite losing 72 hit which hurts, gains are
+8 Stam
+41 Int
+84 Spirit
+47 Sp Pow
+18 Crit
overall - a good option for locks IMO

Would Warlocks have priority for this staff over a Resto Druid? Because from what I see, it's a staff for both Healers and DPS, but everyone else flaming a Resto Druid for rolling on this begs to differ, which has got me pretty confused.

This is a not so impressive item for its item level. someone on this page said that this is one of the better items for a holy priest and it rivals Mh and Oh combos. Really?
This is comparing this staff, ilvl 213 to the impossible dream ilvl 213 pared with the matriarch's spawn ilvl 213.
Staff of restraint
85 stam
108 int
84 spirit
68 crit
461 spell power
Mh + Oh combo
79 stam
85 int
74 spirit
42 crit
32 haste
527 spell power
This is the differences from switching from the staff to the mh+oh combo(accounting for spirtiual guidance)
- 6 stamina
- 23 int
- 11 spirit
- 26 crit
+32 haste
+63 spell power.
Since i consider stamina pretty useless for the most part, your trading in 23 int, 11 spirit, 26 crit for 32 haste, and what really ties it in for the winner will be the huge 63 spell power.

I wanted this staff so bad on my Restodruid, because let's face it - we get all the haste we need from our armor.
And with the recent buf!@#e around Nourish (Considering T7 4-piece set bonus, its synergy with Wild Growth, and the changes to Improved Regrowth (+25% crit with both Nourish and Regrowth instead) I find extra crit to be handy as hell, due to Living Seed and Nature's Grace. Essentially, the more crit we get - the more haste we get in the bargain. What's not to love?
Eventually I got it too. OMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM

Staff of Restraint
Binds when picked up
Two-Hand Staff
287 - 549 Damage Speed 3.20
(130.6 damage per second)
(1061 feral attack power)
+85 Stamina
+108 Intellect
+84 Spirit
Durability 120 / 120
Requires Level 80
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 68 (1.48% @ L80).
Equip: Increases spell power by 461.
Common Facts:
- This staff has got awesome stats to a Destruction type Warlock because of it's high critical strike rating and the high amount of Spirit rewarded which adds Spell Damage whenever Fel Armor is active.
- It's an excellent choice for Moonkin Druids (Boomkin in common tongue nowadays) as well thanks to the Improved Moonkin Form talent which increases Spell Damage based on your spirit.
- Resto Druids could benefit from it as well because of the Heal over Time spells which does not require haste as well as doing Critical heals with Nourish
- Discipline/Holy Priests could also enjoy the usage of this staff because of a different preference of Critical Strike Heals rather than speed healing. Discipline Priests will enjoy themselves spamming Penance and having fun with the heal/damage done.
- Possibly an good option of weapon for Mages as well whom like to see more mana regeneration from Spirit while dealing critical strike damage from Frostbolts, Arcane Barrage and Ice Lance.
Fun Facts:
- My Warlock did 10 critical strikes of Shadowbolt in a row and my Moonkin did 8 critical strikes of Starfire in a row thanks to this staff.
- It is one of the most common dropped staff compared to the other staves in all the current WoTLK 25-man raids.
- It's the second best staff in WoTLK (as of 3.0.9) after Damnation which drops from the 4-Horseman chest as well as from Gluth.

The fact that it is so good means every blinking caster that can use it under the sun will want to get their hands on it. If you want a hope in hell to snag this, get a set 25 man roster goin in your guild and run Heroic OS every week for a couple weeks.
Seeing as how 25 man OS is being pugged quite regularly now, you are bound to see numerous people with that damn Scapel/Violet Citadel Ward combo which gives them an excellent case to need on this.
If you just keep pugging you may have 10-15 casters a fight that want this, but with your guild you can at least be assured that your DKP is building up, or more people are getting geared up, therefore, the competition for this very nice multi-caster/multi-role staff will lessen as time goes on.

Happy to grab this on my FFB mage as now the Molten Armor is adding crit rating based on spirit.
I traded my
Ward of the Violet Citadel
and
Grieving Spellblade
for it. Keeping them for respec purposes, but a nice +Int increase.
Nice when you are already hit-capped to be able to move equipment around and not have to constantly be checking that stupid stat all the time.

It's also worth pointing out it's a very good staff for PvP - in particular I'm thinking Disc priests with a nice dollop of all the important stats you need until you can get one of the furious items. In terms of raw stats it's better than the vast majority of other options for PvP, MH/OH combos included.

Are you really offering this as justification? Did this staff take you from 0% crit to goingtocrit8timesinarow crit or something?
You got those chains of crits because thats what the random number generator gave you. Not because some piece of gear put you at a magical rating.

I can't Help but look at this staff and see everyone argue as to who should have or hold this staff, or any staff with a decent if any spirit increase on it. its quite hard to inform or be helpful to anyone by bouncing back and forth which class should have it given the fact most are aruging there class should which makes the argument bias from the start.
Yes it has a grande amount of Int
Yes it has a balance of Stam
Yes it has a nice if not favorable amount of Spirit.
As for the Crit rating No matter what class you are everyone likes and can benefit from a Crit, weather Dps or Healing.
As to who should have it, i cant help but assume it was intended to be geared towards a Priest or warlock class for the most commonly stated reasons, Fel Armour for locks in potentially helping Dps, as well as Priests. However a priest IMO can make more use of this staff since All spec's of Priests benefit from Spirit aswell as crit
Holy=Surge of Light/Inspiration/Holy concentration
Disc=Aegis/inspiration(if u r one of the rare who grab it even as a disc priest)
Shadow=twisted faith/Glpyh of shadow
So in theory yes a priest should take this over a lock since they can make use of it respec after respec, which is something a warlock cannot say for themselves.
Aswel i also agree it is common respect to allow a healer to roll priority over casting Dps. the better the healer the better success rating in raids. love your Healer and your healer will love you back =D
