This dropped for us in naxx25 from Loatheb on 9/29/2008.
Confirmed Loatheb 25 drop. God, I wish it had just a tiny bit more defense though, upgrading from
can give you some headaches in regard to staying uncrittable. Other than that, these are a very powerful set of legs.
While - obviously enough - appealing to any class, these should be particularly appealing to paladin tanks attempting to maintain/achieve 102.4% defensive stats (for a pure all-attacks-avoided-or-blocked mitigation set).
They're actually better than pally 25 man T7 for this purpose due to their higher block rating plus the dodge rating, although it comes at the cost of ~1 socket (tier has 2 sockets, but you use one just to match the stam on these) & block value (63 assuming you'd socket the tier pants with 2x blue gems).
All that said.. very nice for any tank, just the stats have a specialised appeal to one variety.
540 Defense is all that is required in terms of Avoidance.
102.4% total Avoidance is what was necessary to achieve Uncrushablility. Crushing Blows are no longer a concern.
Correct on the defense, correct on the crushing blows (assuming you're including block into 'avoidance').
However 102.4% still has some relevance for a paladin.
If you can maintain 102.4%, every single blow is either a miss, dodge, parry or block. Considering virtually every raid buffed pally tank will have 1000+ Block Value, even in the 'worst case scenario' - a block - a significant amount of damage is mitigated (i.e. 1000 damage blocked would be 20% of a 5,000 hit mitigated, 10% of a 10,000 hit mitigated or 5% of a 20,000 hit mitigated). Paladins are the *only* class currently capable of doing this & it's a signature advantage.
This is why I say these pants have particular appeal to paladin tanks - they have more block rating than any other pair of pants currently in-game, nearly 1% of dodge on top of that & a moderate amount of m/d/p/b from defense. Therefore, to the best of my knowledge, they are currently the best leg-slot item available for maintaining a 102.4% avoided-or-blocked set. As you correctly point out, there are plenty of better options for maintaining uncritability... but if you're forming a 102.4% set then that's probably no longer something you have significant issues with.
A fair comparison to these would be
off Sarth-25. These have overall more mitigation stats but the dragon brood has a ton of hit, which is great if your hit is low. If hit isn't an issue, these are a better choice.
