You just have to finish any battleground (you must stay for the full duration of the battleground), win or loss does not matter. You will then get a mail with the tabard.
You can get it at level 10.
This is for the Olympic Games that are going on obviously. You also have a chance of winning a pet if you actually win the battleground.
Edit: Why is everyone downrating all these comments?
Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics

You can find more information about the

Talking to a commoner during the Olympics in any of the capital cities gave you further information on how to gain these items.
Every two years the Spirits of Competition grow especially fervent... and now is that time! We wear this tabard into the Battlegrounds to honor them, seeking to defeat our enemies and earn their favor.

Q: How can I gain the favor of a Spirit of Competition?
A: You must defeat our rivals in any of the Battlegrounds. With every victory, there is a chance that a
will be mailed to you.
You got an in-game mail when you received one of these prizes.
You fought bravely in a battleground and impressed the Spirits of Competition... Well done! As a reward, you have been gifted with this mark of favor; a Competitor's Tabard. Wear it proudly.
You have honored the Spirits of Competition with your fervor in the face of the enemy. Congratulations! With this Gold Medallion, they will be proud to be seen at your side.
There is also a different version of the dragon mini-pet, called the
Essence of Competition
. You can summon (
) it by using an item called the
, which you were able to get by talking to the Battleground Enthusiast in either Ironforge or Orgrimmar, and giving her a secret code.
The Battleground Enthusiast in Ironforge was a female dwarf called
, and she was located in the Hall of Arms in the Military Ward. The Battleground Enthusiast in Orgrimmar was a female orc called
, and she was located in the Hall of the Brave in the Valley of Honor.
You know the Spirits of Competition, yes?
Every two years they draw close to the mortal realm. During such times, members of both the Alliance and Horde wear Competitor's Tabards into the Battlegrounds to honor the spirits, seeking to defeat one another and earn their favor.
I stockpile souvenirs from such turbulent times. If you've learned the proper word, I might be convinced to part with one...
I would like to enter the secret code to receive my Competitor's Souvenir.
While the Essence of Competition could be found next to the Battleground Enthusiasts, it was never released in Europe or the US as a mini-pet for players. (
This pet will not be released on US and EU servers. The NPCs found on those servers to redeem the code are a bug.
Throughout each day of the event in China, the code is mailed to 500 random players. Only players who have achieved various in-game milestones during the event are eligible for a chance to receive the code. Some milestones include having an Arena rating of 1650+, increasing reputation for certain Outland factions from less than revered to exalted, or raising a crafting profession from 350 or less to 375.
Any battleground which you participate in, whether won or lost, will award you with the tabard.
Any battleground which you won may award you with the gold medallion.
You don't need to win 3 (or more) games in a row to get the gold medallion.
You don't need to be #1 in kills or healing etc. to get the gold medallion.
You don't need to be wearing the tabard to get the gold medallion.
The mini-pet seems to be of the same level as the player who acquired it.
Entering a Battleground that has already started will still award the Tabard, and can award the Medallion too so long as you stay until the conclusion.
Just got both on my first BG (ended before I managed to get off the starter rock)
To my surprise I got both.
Don't be too quick to get rid of this after you get the pet, there is an achievement in Wrath of the Lich King for Having 10 Tabards. Assuming this counts as one of them.
Today is August 22, 2008. I did my first BG since the Olympics started and I did not get the tabard. So it's not all the way to the end of the Olympics, just an FYI.
This event is officially over.
So this item is No Longer Available to Players I suppose.
Of course I had a wow break when this was in game. oh well, 2 more years of wow then! All for the tabard!
As having this tabard is part of an achievement now: I destroyed mine because of lack of bank space. Is there a way to get it back?
Trying to delete this ask me a confirmation dialog to destroy it.
So I think that the tabard vendor can't replace it like the Tabard of the Protector. Havent tried to succesfully destroy it and I dont wanna lose it.
Appears you can't retrieve this tabard back from the Tabard Vendor in Dalaran after you destroy it.
From the website:
"Every two years, the Spirits of Competition grow especially fervent, and draw close to the mortal realm. During such times, members of both the Alliance and Horde can honor the spirits and earn Competitor's Tabards by seeking to defeat one another in the battlegrounds. For victory in competition, they can also earn the spirits' favor in the form of a prized gold medal - and the special pet it summons."
So it should be available in 2010
I'm shocked no one posted this information but the rings represent the different continents in world of warcraft. I'm guessing the 2 rings that are not blue are Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. The big one guessing is Outland(which was once known as Draenor) and the blue I'm guessing is Northrend. This is true the 4 rings stand for the 4 continents in warcraft. If u don't believe me just google. If you don't realize this then your clearly blind as a bat.
new item for 2012 olympic event = chuck norris in a box.
all you need for 4 years of fun,
Interestingly enough, and despite all the different things saying "Every two years" I don't see the Spirit of Comp. being brought up during the Winter Olympics (at least yet) this year. Maybe this is something that will indeed only come up during Summer Olympics?
This is Was VERY easy to get when it was Around You simply had to do a Complete a BattleGrounds. The Golden metal (The pet) was Another Story I did around 15 BGS and Still didnt obtain one.
I think that this Tabard should be available during every Olympics, Summer and Winter. Or have a frost themed version for the Winter.
i have one toon with this tabbard...I love that tabbard and for that reason alone that toon will never be deleted
Not a pretty tabard imo but I wear it nonetheless because it's one of the few items that are actually not obtainable anymore.
Mistakenly deleted this years ago, and I would kill to have it back. Not because it looks good, but because it's really quite unique these days.
Lol i have one of these on all my PvP characters from back when you got marks instead of honor
Really hope they make this tabard account-wide. Would be awesome! Plus it's not like they're ruining anything by it, still shows you PvP'd 4 years ago even if on a toon made more recently than that.
With the olympics currently taking place, the other day I got out my pet from the 2008 olympics and it dawned on me that there was a tabard also. I checked my inventory and could not find it. I then checked my feats of strength and noticed that while I had the achievement for obtaining the pet, I did not have the achievement for owning the tabard. I thought there would be little I could do. Four years have passed since I had deleted it and surely a GM would not be able to help me.
Thats where I was wrong. I opened a ticket and explained that I could prove that I once owned the tabard by showing my achievement for the pet. Sure enough a day or two later I get an in game mail from a GM with the tabard attached. Had I listened to everything I read from various forums I would not have even opened the ticket. People are so quick to say things like that its impossible to have an item restored that you deleted 4 years ago. A little bit of patience is all you need!
So to anyone like me who got this tabard and deleted it because of bag space problems, get it back and earn your Feat of Strength after all this time!
I always hated myself for deleting my DK, really sucks since I never knew this was rare to get :/
I've just had this item restored after I opened a ticketed, begged and very politely explained that I had had it, that I had the feat of strength and that is would really compliment my transmog gear. I also said some other stuff about donating to charity and helping old people across the street if they'd help me out. They said they'd help as a one off so it's worth a try if you've simply got rid of it by accident. Upvote me if you get the tabard back because of this advice!
Currently in 5.4, there is a bug (at least I assume it is) that allows you to buy the
from Garyle in Orgimmar and Lysea in Ironforge. I suspect it is a bug as I got the achievement on alts. Though I am unsure if you never ended up getting it originally, if you can still get it. I have put in a ticket to see for sure. It's always good to know for sure. :)
EDIT: A GM responded to my ticket and it appears that it is indeed legit. They said it's only available for people who got it in the past and that they're working on getting it available to all of the tabard vendors. For now though, it's only available from Garyle in Orgrimmar if you're Horde and Lysea in Ironforge if you're Alliance. So if you got it all those years ago and never bothered putting in a ticket to get it back, now is your chance to finally get it. :)
I was able to buy this tabard this AM from the tabard vendor in IF
As of patch 5.4 players who have this tabard on at least one character can visit a tabard vendor and purchase it on other characters on their account. My monk now is a proud owner of the tabard!
This item is no longer available within the game.
False. It is available.
In reference to the statement "
This item is no longer available within the game
This statement is currently incorrect
. If you have a character that had received the Competitor's Tabard in the past then you will find that the tabard is still available for all characters on that account. It is provided free of charge from the tabard vendor located next to the guild vendor. Upon purchase the character will also be granted the achievement Competitor's Tabard
Does it count toward the Tabard achievement?
Can confirm (as of 6.2, may have been allowed earlier), that if you have earned this tabard on any character, you can purchase the tabard from
in Ironforge's visitor centre. I had earned the tabard on an obscure alt many many years ago, and I accidentally discovered today I can buy it on all my toons now!
Can be verified with this quest :
Also note that, as per conversation with GM today (2/12/16) that the tabard/achievement allegedly are account-wide but NOT battle.net account wide. I was told that my account linked to the account with the tabard could not receive it at this time and was asked to put in a suggestion (which I did).
Just as a note if you were someone like me who didn't receive the tabard, however, you got the pet, you can send a ticket into Blizz and they will mail you the tabard and then you will be able to get the tabard on all your toons again as I did today (:
