Sorry Laetand, but this thrinket is horrible, blizz really needs to play mage more :)
Now a more constructive post:
A mage wants in thrinkets passive +crit/+damage effects, but if you cant live without some kind of +mana thrinket, get
wich not only adds more +damage in boss fights (you wont use mana stones on trash anyway) as it gives you alot more mana back then Serpent-Coil Braid.
Serpent-Coil Braid gives around 290 mana every 3m, while mark of defiance, has 15% proc chance to give you back 128-172 mana, if you spam fireballs, it takes you around 24secs to get 128-172 mana back :)
What an awsome waste of an iLvl 115 class specific thrinket, and dkp
What if your pop your trinket first? Does it put your mana gems on cooldown? Did bliz code for that?
*Major* nerf incoming to this lovey item in 2.10:
Binds when picked up
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases your spell critical strike rating by 20.
It's worse than Eye of the Beast (
) and thats a lvl 60 item!
its still bad when compared to any other thrinket avaiable to someone that raids and has access to serpent shrine
225 damage for 5 spells using fireballs = 1125 damage every 3m, so 1125/180x3 = 18,75 damage per spell average, decent, but still inferior to other thrinkets in total damage done/added, even after you consider the crit/hit bonus
1125 = total damage done by its effect considering that you use mods to negate/reduce the impact of lag
180 = 3m in secs
x3 = cast time of fireball
very basic thinking, not adding talents and so on.
I don't know, My mage is 41/0/20 and i go for mass spell DMG at about 1056 frost DMG selfbuffed. with int on i have about 9k mana so on longer boss fights like high king, gruul and mag (not in SSC yet :( ) And I have a system set up for mana gem rotation. and the whole time we learn high king and gruul I didn't pop 1 mana pot or go oom (or inervate or anything like that lol) ^^ so a trinket like this would suit a play style like mine. You'd just have to proc it @ the right time. like if you're in SSC - spell Strike procs, send rank 1 frostbolt @ mob (afaik SSC is high frost resist) get resist proc eye of mag, drop mana gem, AP, POM, pyro.
Let's count how much this trinket actually increases dps of a fire mage who has +1000 fire damage, 30 % crit chance and let's say 11 % hit chance with talent points. All this stats are against level a 73 mobs and a raid bosses.
First of all, every hit you don't miss because of this trinket can also crit. With that 11 % of hit your target have a 6 % chance to resist your spells. If you equip this trinket your target have a 5 % chance to resist your spells. With +1000 fire spell damage your avarage fireball hit (When we are not calculating resists) is ((713+904)/2+1000*0.9)*1.3*1.1 = 2443.155 damage. That's 814.385 dps.
Without this trinket, when your target have a 6 % chance to resist your spells, it means that your avarage fireball hit is 2443.155*0.94 = 2296.5657 which is 765.5219 dps.
With this trinket, when your target have a 5 % chance to resist your spells, it means that your avarage fireball hit is 2443.155*0.95 = 2320.99725 which is 773.66575 dps. So that 1 % hit increases your dps by 8,14385.
Let's now count how much this 30 crit rating increases your dps.
30 crit rating is 1.36 % crit chance so your avarage fireball hit (when we are not counting resists) is:
((713+904)/2+1000*0.9)*1,3136*1.1 = 2468.71416
With this trinket your target have a 5 % chance to resist your spells. This means that your avarage fireball hit with this trinket is 2468.71416*0.95 = 2345.278452 which is 781.759484 dps.
Let's now count how much this use effect increases your dps.
+225 damage for 15 seconds every 120 seconds and fireball casting time is 3 seconds.
With improved fireball that extra damage is 225*0.9 = 202.5
With this trinket your target have a 5 % chance to resist your spells.
202.5*15/3/120*1.3*1.1*0.95 = 11.46234375 dps
781.759484 + 11.46234375 = ~793.22 dps so avarage fireball hit is 2379.66.
Let's compare this to Icon of the Silver.
Avarage fireball hit when we are not counting the use effect of the trinket is:
(713+904)/2+1043*0.9)*1.3*1.1*0.94 = 2348.58624 which is 782.86208 dps
Let's then count how much the use effect of 'Icon of the Silver' increases your dps.
155*0.9 = 139.5
139,5*20/3/120*1.3*1.1*0.94 = ~10.42 dps
782.86208 + 10.42 = ~793.28 dps so avarage fireball hit is 2379.84
But this is not accurate because 20/3 is 6.666... and only 6 fireballs gets the damage bonus from the use effect. So with +1000 fire damage and 30 % crit chance this two trinkets are equal together. With more than +1000 fire damage Serpent-Coil Braid is better than Icon of the Silver, and with less than +100 fire damage Icon of the Silver is better.
But then again, with Serpent-Coil Braid you get 25 % more mana when you use your mana gems which is a good bonus and it may increase your dps in a long fights.
I haven't seen this dropping yet but once this drops I will take this. This trinket will be good for a long time.
if u use any other trinket ( that gives spelldmg bonus ) before mana gem, u grant spelldmg from trinket and mana gem consume effect.
eg: if u use Icon of the Silver, then u use mana gem u would have 380 bonus spelldmg for 15 seconds, and they are also on same cd of 2mins, meaning that u can stack them allways on every 2 mins.
i got this trinket 4 days ago, and im really impressed with it, tested several builds for fire mage and it worked awesome inc. arcane power, and deep fire build. Also i would mention that +25% mana is really awesome thing to have, its really usefull for longer fights.
so Thumbs up for this trinket.
mages do not hesistate to spend your dkp for this.
This is an excellent trinket, though the bonus mana returned on mana gem use is a poor replacement for mana gems actually scaling. Most TBC fights are long enough to exhaust the three mana gems that are worth using (though with this trinket, you will want enough to use one every 2 minutes for the proc) evocation once or twice, and you will still be popping potions almost every time they are up.
This is very good, though, as it has the two rating stats mages like most, as well as the damage effect and mana bonus.
This is the best trinket to use on Kaz in Hyjal for a mage. The extra boost in mana will greatly help your survivability as well as damage because you won't have to "hold back."
Gonna be a lot better now with the Mana Emerald changes is 2.3.2.
I'll post the Mana gem changes in 2.3.2. since I think I'm not the only person who had to look them up:
The mana gems min and max mana value have been modified slightly to provide a less random bonus to the mana.
Rank 1 - Restores 390 to 410 mana. (Instead of 375-425)
Rank 2 - Restores 585 to 615 mana. (Instead of 550 to 650)
Rank 3 - Restores 829 to 871 mana. (Instead of 775 to 925)
Rank 4 - Restores 1073 to 1127 mana. (Instead of 1000 to 1200)
Rank 5 - Restores 2340 to 2460 mana. (Instead of 1800 to 3000 on PTR, 1136 - 1364 on live) and has 3 charges
In 2.3.2 this trinket will grant you ~600 extra mana every time you use a Mana Emerald.
Assuming that you use a gem every 2 min from the beginning of the fight (you can use a rank 1 after your vey first spell) then it averages out to
spelldmg. Compare that to
Icon of the Silver Screscent
's use effect which averages out to
to the comment made by bluscrn +Hit does not increase your chance to Crit lets say this:
you have 30% crit 10% hit that mean out off 100 fireballs
30 will crit 6 will be resisted and 64 will be normal hits
ive read that its all rolled on a table like this
i also thought it was like you stated
The real benefit to me with this trinket was that it really worked out well with my current gear and situation. This trinket replaced my Scryer's Bloodgem and then with the combo of the +spell hit badge ring I was able to cover up the lost spell hit from the Bloodgem and get the last .5% I needed to hit spell cap. Also, I'm now able to use Destruction Potions over Mana Potions with the rather large increase from mana gems. So overall it was a huge DPS increase over my old trinket. I'm very happy with it!
This trinket is
, the stats are great but this is at the moment (patch 2.4.1) the only trinket you can ''dual-trinket'' whit (Hex Shruken Head + The Skull of Gul'dan got nerfed so you
dual-trinket them anymore).
Using any kind of spec whit IV you can get alot of burst dps.
If you are specced 0/48/11 +2 you can use to burst (prefered at a boss <20% HP):
Hex Shrunken Head
The Skull of Gul'dan
This gives you:
211+225+120= 556 dmg
30%+20%= ~36% haste ( 1-(1/1.3/1.2) )
225+120= 345 dmg
30%+20%+11%= ~42% haste ( 1-(1/1.3/1.2/1.11)
Basicly 211 dmg vs 8% haste, I let you decide what is better.
Side note: when fighting brutallus this trinket doesn't cut it, better to use
whit HSH and TSoG equiped.
Been using this little baby in arenas during S3 and I can say that I prefer it over Icon for burst
This is amount of mana you can gain from a mana gem
this trinket equipped
390 - 410 agate
585 - 615 jade
829 - 871 citrine
1073 - 1127 ruby
2340 - 2460 jade
with the trinket
487 - 512 agate
731 - 768 jade
1036 - 1088 citrine
1341 - 1408 ruby
2925 - 3075 jade
If Blizzard doesn't nerf it, this trinket will still be great in endgame
with the new
because it is a straight 25%, so it will be just as effective on a level 77 gem as a level 68 gem. If you start sharding/vendoring your 70 epics when you begin to run out of bank space, be sure to hang on to this one. I know I will.
Copied from my Magtheridon Eye comments...
IMO the best use of this trinket will be for AoE grinding when WOTLK comes out. In this case you have 10 levels to get as quickly as possible to get back into raids. No need to stack hit in this case. So, throw your dps gear on, find some mobs 2-3 levels higher than you and start nuking.
This combo should work nicely considering FN/Blizzard/CoC have a high probability of a resist vs. 8-10 mobs. The Blade of wizardry for the proc haste for chain blizzard, The eye for spell damage, and the coil for your mana, all should reduce your AoE grinding downtime to something very short. And during leveling, the single fastest way to boost XP/hr is to decrease your downtime between cycles.
Blade of Wizardry
Eye of Magtheridon
It seems that both the heroic and normal Frostfire raid set for mages has this trinket's effect as its 2pc bonus:
Only better -- 40% instead of 25%.
So my previous comment is void if you are a mage and you get 2pc Frostfire.
It remains in my bag in WotLk (and CATA!) because it is
the best way to regen mana in chain pulls
equip SCB >> use mana gem >> equip original trinket
4.2k mana (5.5k with 2T7) in 1 sec. I use the following macro to use SCB out of combat:
/equipslot 14 4 1
/use mana gem
/use mana gem
Edit: Click the above macro TWICE, and you will equip your original trinket. 14 = 2nd trinket, 4 = last bag, 1 = first slot, put your SCB there.
I learned this trick from Manly's (of EJ) way to deal with hyjal waves.
I have the trinket from SSC, the 2pc t7 and the Mana Gem Glyph: the on use damage increases do not stack, you only get one. And, the gem usually procs around 6.1k mana each time you use it. Quite beastly if you ask me!
EDIT: Since the Patch they DO stack. you get 2 "Mana Surge" buffs for 225 Spell Damage each, but it's damage only, not healing for what it's worth.
I had this on my mage from 72->85 and still using. I have been arcane since got this trinket and its awsome trinket for arcane mages 8)
Was somewhat suprised at finding this after clearing it on my mage. I don't recally when exactly we lost mana crystals, but we don't have them anymore.
