This gem appears to be wrongly statted for two reasons: first, it has two stats found only on red gems, unlike other purple gems which have a red stat and a blue stat; and second, the other two gems in the "shifting" line (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24055 and http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23110) both have agility and stamina.

This is THE gem for dps druids (cat). It gives 16 AP in cat form with HOTW, + the crit and dodge from agility.

This is the best dps gem for rogues in blue sockets aswell. All other blue/purple/green gems are either ap/agi/crit + _stamina_. This epic gem scales with Blessing of Kings and Vitality aswell. But personally I would go for Shifting Nightseyes in blue sockets to meet requirements on meta and socket bonuses for the extra stamina.

At this moment - due to the weird setting of stats - this gem is the best choice for any melee DPS class to fulfill their Metagem-requirement (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32409).
Shifting Tanzanite is a purple gem and thus will count as 1x Blue & 1x Red, allowing you to choose Yellow +10 hit gems for your other gem slots. After the 2.4 patch you will be able to use 2 Shifting Tanzanites at a time when the 'Unique-Equipped' tag will be removed.

Compared to Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32212) you gain 5 strength while losing 7 stamina and 1 agility. It's still a good idea to farm this gem given the huge demand for Shadowsong Amethysts by almost every class and it's comparatively low drop rate in Black Temple. In my guild I have to be on the waiting list for ~4 weeks to get a Shadowsong Amethyst :D

All three bosses of heroic Steamvault have a ~2-3% chance of dropping the Shifting Tanzanite, while the other two gems obtained in this instance drop at a ~6-8% chance. So good luck farming them, it took me 2 weeks to get one :)

Before Patch 2.4, i would have to say that this was the best DPS Gem for Warriors/Feral Druids (out of BT) in a Blue slot... I was so excited for the patch, so that this gem wasn't unique equipped, i have 4-5 of them in my bank. Now it's a mediocre gem at best.

A sad day for feral druids indeed! - I love the color of this one though- it is exactly the correct color for Tanzanite (see http://www.lapigems.com/tanzanite.asp to see true colors). I am a huge fan of the color so will be suitably biased on this patch

Due to the shadowlands patch (9.0.1) the Garrosh Heirlooms (Mists of pandara) being usable at level 1 I figured 2 of these gems in my heirlooms would be great as they are +5 agi and +6 stamina and have no item level requirement.

Unfortunately after doing the dungeon on 13 charracters and this gem dropped I found out that it has been nerfed to +2 agi and +2 stamina.
This dropped for me on a level 50 character (max level) so it is not scaled down in power due to level.

You can buy +3 stat gems from the pvp vendor or AH, so unless you really want a bit of extra stamina together with your main stat, it isn't worth farming this.

Darn, I see a lot of strength and int gems that are 5 stat + 6 stam
but for some reason the sole agility gem is nerfed to 2/2, was hoping to use it as a stat boost in my legendary along side a kracken eye
