This is obtained through the trading card game.
If you happen to end up with one of these, you can redeem them in Booty Bay. Look for a guy with two bodyguards, one riding a turtle, to talk to.
This drops from the WoW Trading Card Game Cards, it was released on October 29th, and the card it comes from is called: Thunderhead Hippogryph
After receiving your card (which is from the booster packs or if you're willing to dig into your pockets costs about $22), go onto WorldofWarcraft.com and you can use the code to activate the code, and then head onto your character and into Booty Bay where Landro Longshot on the docks will give you one in exchange for the code.
I never heard of this or seen this ever. And my server is a very OLD server which is hard to believe there isnt any of these on my serv. But who knows the horde might have them. But if Poker is right then im gonna get me one of those codes i think its defintly worth it
I got a pack of the WoW TCG cards yesterday, and a winning scratch off with one of these was in there.
It's cute, and it's certainly unique, but it's not terribly exciting. If you have this and you're standing around in a major city, be prepared to get a lot of whispers asking where people can get it from.
Also, if you get a scratch off card, you can redeem it from
Well... Considering another TCG, Magic the Gathering, in which you just collect cards and don't get any bonus after buying alot of 'em and playing for ages, getting a little pet or a mount, that might do anything, but just be there, is awesome imo.
Chased this card for a while, ended up buying at least 10-12 booster packets. Ended up swapping all my cards for this card. Worthwhile having. Haven't seen another one on my server. Probably cheaper to buy card from ebay then try to get lucky buying packets of cards.
Hippogryph hatchling, is probably the rarest small pet in the game, it can only be obtained by finding the "Coded" Thunderhead hippogryph card in the TCG decks (not to be confused with the same uncoded card).
This is a very rare card and your chances of finding this card by buying random booster packs are not good, a better way is to find a card seller on e:bay expect to pay in excess of £25 though.
Also expect to be hassled by players everytime you get it out asking where you got it.
If you want to see one in game and are on shadowsong server just contact Kulgar of the Aztec knights.
Here's some links to the other in-game items from either loot cards, or turning in your points:
Tabard of Flame
Tabard of Frost
2,000 UDE Points
Carved Ogre Idle
25,000 UDE Points
Perpetual Purple Firework
10,000 UDE Points
New items in the recently released Through the Dark Portal expansion:
Imp in a Ball
Epic pet O.o
Where does it come from and how hard is it to get?
The Hippogryph Hatchling comes from the World of Warcraft TCG (trading card game)
Heroes of Azeroth (
1/242 booster packs
Heroes of Azeroth booster boxes contain 24 boosters and cost approx $45 USD (inc. shipping), therefore the average cost of obtaining this particular loot is $454.00.
How much would I expect to pay for one off eBay or similar?
(most information sourced from there), the lowest Buy It Now price starts around $40 USD upwards to $55 USD, with the average quantity listed hovering around 4 items.
How do the Loot cards work?
Loot cards are special rare versions of WoW TCG cards found in booster packs, starter decks, and raid decks that have a revealable unique code. Once this protective layer concealing the code is scratched away, a 25 digit promotion code is revealed that can be entered into the Blizzard offical promotions page. These codes work for both US and EU servers.
I have the 25 digit loot code, now what?
All accounts from every region in the world use
to redeem any and all special loot. This webpage allows you to enter the 25 digit promotion code and also select the region and realm for the character that will receive the loot item.
Upon succcessfuly submitting the above information, you will be presented with an in-game code. Write this code down or print it out; you will need it to retrieve your item. Log into the game with the character that is to receive the item and travel to Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale. There, you will need to find a goblin by the name of Landro Longshot. He is located on the lower parts of Booty Bay on the docks, and should be easily recognised due to the fact that he has a distinctive purple shirt and two body guards next to him.
When you find Landro, he will first ask if you are here for a promotion, and then ask you which TCG expansion your item comes from (or Points Redemption); check your loot card if you are not sure which item that is. Ensure you have got bag space to hold the item!
Useable at any level and therefore available for twinks.
In patch 2.4 the guys in booty bay on the turtle mounts by the Old Port Authority are no longer on turtle mounts and there is no hippogryph hatchling flying behind them.
I am not sure if this means you have to turn it in somewhere else, I presume that you can still turn in your scratch card codes.
Can anyone confirm?
they should also make a baby lion scorpion bat type thing like in the horde dat' would kick ass
worth saying that 3.08 it is still one of the rarest, and especially known for it's unique EPIC quality...
Blizz sure knows how to drive a pet collector mad
Edit: Forgot the dragon Kite, not the only epic, but still unique as u can fly with both this and its mount.
i was the first on my server with it
i felt special
but many people have it now but i was the 1st
Since they're changing the TCG mounts like the
in 3.2 to become tradeable (to avoid scams it seems), I wonder if they'll change the vanity pets like these as well? It just dawned on me I have an unscratched card to get this pet from back when we gave the TCG a go.
Would be nice to be able to turn it around for some gold since I don't really care about vanity pets at all.
As of 4.1 the pet flies in mid air! It's about time :) I love having my little buddy everywhere I go.
Goes perfectly with my Blazing Hippogryph.
You can now get this pet from the Blizzard Store for 10 dollars. It's differently named now as the Cenarion Hatchling, but it's the same colors. It will also activate for all your characters instead of just one. If you want this pet and you can't find the card, that is the way to go. It's also for a good cause, relief for Japan.
A similar (if not identical) pet, the Cenarion Hatchling (
#teaches-ability), can now be obtained via the Blizzard store for £9/$10/10 Euros depending on whether the account is US or EU. For a limited time (2nd May to 31st July) 100% of the fee will be going to earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.
The pet arrives in your mailbox with a message from Keeper Remulos:
It is my hope to express the gratitude of the Cenarion Circle for your assistance in rebuilding the shattered world through this gift.
May this loyal and lovable hatchling prove a fine friend on all your future journeys.
Which I found rather heartwarming. The pet makes parrot-like chirping and churring noises when clicked- with possibly a slight braying donkey undertone? Not sure if this is similar to the Hippogryph Hatchling of the TCG.

So if you're just looking for a hippogryph hatchling pet for RP purposes or just plain d'aww factor, this might be a worth while alternative.
blizzard what do you pay people to do? if you're going to help japan then at least give them the time a day to design a different pet than one that is already in the game that people pay good money for. give me a break. pure laziness.
It's not lazy, it's cost efficient so that the company can make donations without having to cover the cost of creating a new model.
No, the pet isn't original. But it exists for the benefit of others, not the company giving it out.
It can now be obtained in two ways:
1. By purchasing it from the Blizzard Store for $10 (Which goes towards the Japan Relief Effort)
2. By getting your hands on a rare TCG (
Trading Card Game
) card where you can redeem the code for it in Booty Bay
I'd just like to point out that the model has changed ever so slightly to match that of the
. The two pets are identical, but before the charity pet was released, the
was a lot less sleek looking and sported a much more bulbous beak. The currently displayed screenshot still features this.
Correction both models were changed after the Cenarian Hippogryph came out. They both looked like the cuter, more babyish hippogryph to start,
then Blizz changed them both to the sharper beak. more like they used the same model for both so changing one automatically changes the other.
and yes it is pure laziness not even to have a color palate change. you can argue that anyway you want, but lazy is as lazy does. color change takes any real artist not that much time at all. also, blizz only gave the money to japan for a short time after the pet was released, so the profits are now going to blizzard.
After all who wouldn't want another brightly color bird, white maybe? or more blue and purple like the macaw.
Where can i get that?
Seems like this will be purchasable through the Black Market Auction House, in Mists of Pandaria, along with a few other TCG items.
Seen for sale on Amazon for $750 -.-
Yep it definitely looks just like the pet store one.
... man why did I spend money on this thing again?
Oh right. GOTTA CATCH EM ALL!
Other than the loot card itself, this will be obtainable with the Mists of Pandaria expansion pack through the Black Market Auction House. Be prepared to pay big for it!
These other fun things will be on the BMAH as well:
地精天气制造机 - 原型机01-B
this news post!
Just picked this up off the BMAH for about 65k. I probably got pretty lucky with the price, be prepared for it to go much higher.
I saw one on the AH with the exact same name but with an egg icon (like a sprite darter) and it's rare quality. Am I missing something or...?
confirmed in the blackmarketauctionhouse. start bid at 10k
Cutest from TCG expansion: Heroes of Azeroth :>
Just seen this item on the Black Market Auction House in The Veiled Stair for 15750k bid :D
Just Bough one in normal AH for 10k.... nice one :)) it was 60 bucks on Ebay
i have for sale on akama horde side for cheap, pst glasstoker
I'd like to mention that I had learned this pet directly from the loot card years before MoP and never caged it. I was looking at my Armory pets page and it said that my only epic purple pet was Hippogryph Hatchling. I logged in to check it out, and it shows up as being a blue rare in my battle pet window. Talk about false advertising! How can it be purple on my Armory but blue in-game? Does this mean that my pet downgraded upon learning it? Really weird.
Does this mean that all the other "purples" like the Crawling Claw and Darkmoon Rabbit are also falsely advertised and become blues after adding them to the inventory? Make up your mind Blizz, either one or the other!
Just found this on Alliance Auction House. Someone actually listed it with a buyout of 7000 gold. Needless to say I grabbed it pretty quickly.
Has been posted on Thaurissan/Dreadmaul BMAH almost every week. Cmon, I'm losing value over here!
Sold for 296k gold on the BMAH on Darksorrow -eu
Can you trade this pet in-game?
For all the ones, who probably will never get it. You can get a similar looking pet in the BFA Addon in the Naga Area:
