The droprate is incorrect. The fact is that alot of people kill these mobs but Blacksmiths are the only people the plans drop to.

Most annoying part of this farming for me was the patrols of Infernal souls and Deathforge Tinkerers. There are plenty of Deathforge Guardians and the Deathforge Summoners go down easy. But killing these pats usually makes me oom and takes alot of time. There also seems to be some kind of trigger that spawns them, not sure about this but didnt seem like ordinary patrols to me.

Now you will hate me, but it dropped to me by the 6th mob, while I was doing the "Minions of the Shadow Council" (

) quest :) Too bad I'm a warrior so no use for the plans, just I can say I'm lucky.

do you have to be a specific BS skill level for these to drop?

This plan dropped for my party mate, also a blacksmith, after no more than 10 kills and within 3 kills after that it dropped for me. I guess we're lucky or maybe the countless times I had been there solo and with other guildies added up and finally paid off. Now to see if I have the same luck with the rest of the set.

If you have a flying mount it's best to just skip all the mobs and go to very bottom entrance to the cave and go to about 39,40 in the cave and just pull the mobs to you that way you can watch the tinkerer and infernal patrol so they don't kill you while your fighting the guardians if there is summoner's you can pull them and step up on the little ledge of the ramp that your on and they will LOS to you. Solo them all pretty easy as a protection warrior, just took longer. The mobs aren't social mobs so you can play with them in the one spot without having to worry about them aggroing the whole place. I've been killing ton's of them and they have yet to drop the pattern, still going at it though. You just have to have blacksmithing profession to pick them regardless of recipe level. Good luck fellow blacksmiths.

Just wanted to say I've killed 360 of these bastards over the last few days without this dropping. =) I've got over 700 netherweave...sold a hundred or so marks, a few (very few) greens, and some ham and cherry pie. This is the last dropped BS plan I have to grind for (have all the Ragesteel, the other Khorium plans and even the Greater Rune of Shielding). Of course I got the Ragesteel breastplate on literally my first and only kill of the ashtongue warriors, so this must be payback.
I'm going nuts...that is all. Please shower me with your "I got it in 1 kill stories now" =)

I've only spent about an hour grinding these plans. I know how most of you feel with plans not dropping. Its been about a week of spending about 1-2 hours a day trying to get the ragesteel helm. I still haven't gotten this one yet, but the orcs that drop these are very soft for an arms spec warrior, i can go through about 4 of these guys before needing to heal, but do watch out for the damned pats, i thought I was good to go the other day when i took 5 on at once at level 68 and killed them all when all of a sudden i got hit from behind by an Infernal. I suggest getting a high dps class or a healer to be with you to make the kills go by quicker. Thats what I did for the belt and the ragesteel gloves and they seemed to drop farely quick. Hell may do that today =) Itd be nice to finally max out BS, now that im at 365.

Once you've done the quest that gives you the key, a good place to grind this is in the channel blocked off by a portcullis on the left-hand side of the Deathforge proper. As long as you can handle the occasional bad pull and deal with the single summoner, it's a spot with very fast respawns, no elemental/gan'arg patrols, and few double-pulls.

Well, i think last night was y lucky day... i got the 3 plans in 2 hours or so, it take me 30 kills for the boots, like 40 kills for the belt and like 35 kills for the pants...
I dont know if they change the drop rate...

The method of farming in the deathforge that I've worked out goes as follows:
Head to the top entrance to the Forge (it's on the right, the lower entrance is on the left). Wait for the Summoner/Imp patrol to pass the entrance and get out of aggro range, and then kill the Guardians at the top entrance. Make sure it's all clear (no patrols coming out of the lower entrance and no patrols coming up the ramp) and head into the top entrance.
Kill the Guardians that are just inside, and then drop down off of the bridge to your right (there's a guardian standing on the base of a pillar). Make sure, again, that it's free of patrols before you drop down. I've found it easiest to wait until the summoner/imp goes up out of my sight, then I drop. Kill the Guardians up the ramp and then fight them back onto the bridge, where there are 2 more guardians. Miners: There's a fel iron deposit that spawns at the back of that bridge.
At this point, you should have seen a Gan'rag/Vile Soul patrol spawn or go by. Follow them just out of aggro range, and kill the guardians on the way outside of the lower entrance.
Rinse, repeat.

At 5am in the morning took 2hrs and they dropped. No particular pattern, i never went inside any of the cave's, just killed the ones on the ramp, including the ones on top near our tower. Not all that difficult, now i have the complete set, all 3 of them took 2hrs or less to drop

As an added bonus for Blacksmiths trying for Aldor rep, these mobs can also drop Marks of Sargeras and Fel Armaments.

I've found a pretty good farm spot for this plan. Go in the first entrance of the deathforge and go past the bridge and through the Heavy Iron Portcullis, this is the key to open the door
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30688
. When you're in the door there are seven Guardians, one summoner and around 2 infernals. The other mobs are really easy to kill and the guardians have a nice spawn rate. For miners, like myself, adamantite veins have a decent spawn rate as well. Also, if you need to go AFK, there is a wall that you can climb up right after the green flames just past the infernal.
Happy farming

This took WAY longer to farm than expected, so here are the useful facts I learned while grinding this. I hope it saves you some time.
There are 23 Deathforge Guardians, all of whom spawn at fixed spots and do not patrol. The most efficient farming path is to start on the ground next to the Alliance building at the top of the cliff. Hit the one guy there, then move sort-of clockwise to the two guys outside the Horde building, then to the four guys in front of the entrance arch to the ramp leading down to the Deathforge entrance. Don't go down there yet, instead mount your flyer (or take the elevator) and fly up to the second level of the scaffolding that's right near the last two guys by the arch. When you've cleared the last of the two up top, fly across the chasm to the upper of the two cave entrances.
Hit the guard outside the entrance, then go in on the right side and take out the first guard there. Cross over to the left and take out the next two on that side, then dodge the mobs on the bridge as you cross over to just before the forge room proper. Take out the two guards there, then go back across the bridge, dodging mobs. There will be one mob left on the left side as you get back to the original starting point on the bridge. Hit him, then jump over the edge - directly onto another guard just below you. Then, run down the path away from the casters. There will be three more guards before you hit the very far end of that path, then turn around and come back over the metal part of the path. Turn right and head back out, hitting the one guard on the way, the one at the bottom entrance, and don't forget the last one midway on the path leading to the upper entrance. As soon as you kill him, mount your flyer, go straight up, and you'll be just a few feet from the starting point.
At 85, it took me about five minutes to do a full run, including picking up the odd patrol or two. However, the guards seem to have a variable respawn timer. Some are back within 5 minutes, others seem to take up to 8 or so. Although it was tempting to just keep going with only a partial respawn, the amount of distance you have to travel without any kills makes it unappetizing. I found myself going nuts after a while of constant running, and I don't think I was getting that many of the faster respawns, so I think it's most efficient to let them all reset. Bring a book or something else you can do after you finish your clear while you wait for a full cycle to respawn.
Wowhead says this has a 0.2% drop rate. Assuming 1 in 6 characters have BS as a profession, that should drop the odds to about 1.2%, or roughly 1 in 85 kills - or four full runs. The RNG hates me, so it took me at least 15 runs, or 4+ times longer than expected. If your luck is similar, you will get lots of Marks of Sargeras, Fel Armaments, several metric tons of NetherWeave Cloth, a lovely assortment of greens, and oodles of trash. Be prepared to make a few runs back to camp to empty your bags.
Finally, all the guards are fairly well separated form each other, so there are not too many opportunities to chain pull them. Anyhow, my horribly undergeared 85 could two-shot them, so there's not much time to be saved in trying to pull them for AoE. If you're grinding this at or somewhat above level, you should be fine as long as you keep an eye out for the patrols. Most of those are a warlock and his pet imp - the lock is pretty squishy and his imp is even squishier. However, there also seems to be one patrol of a demonish thingy and two technicians. The techs will drop landmines, and if you're soloing this at level, that coupled with the rest of the pat could ruin your day.
There are a bunch of white comments about this grind, and no green ones down here in the post-Cata section. If this comment was helpful, please rate it up so it turns green and more farmers will see it. Thanks.

The comments by capnbiff, Mahmoth and Helassaid are spot on.
As a level 85 DK, I was able to 1-shot the Guardians and most everything else in the area - so don't be worried about botched pulls anything else.
Running the quest chain to get the
Deathforge Key
was a big help. The only problem is you've got to run through the following quests if you skipped Shadowmoon Valley altogther when leveling (For Horde):
Beseiged!
To Legion Hold
Setting Up the Bomb
Blast the Infernals
The Deathforge
Minions of the Shadow Council
The Fate of Kagrosh
The Summoning Chamber
Bring Down the Warbringer!
The first quest starts at
Blood Guard Gulmok
who is standing outside the gate of Shadowmoon Village.
All told, it took me 93 Guardian kills for the pattern to drop. I got it today, 5/14/2012 patch 4.3.4.

I got all 3 plans in less than 2 hours. The belt plans was the first to drop in Nagrand after the second kill of Murkblood Raiders. The pants plans was second in Shadowmoon valley after about the 6-8 kill of Deathforge Guardians. The boots plans dropped in Nether Storm after about the 10th Disembodied Protector kill.

Whew! Dropped after 375 kills.
At 235 kills I decided to do the quest chain mentioned earlier since I had not done the Shadowmoon Valley quests. Killed up to a count of 300 doing that chain (a few more than necessary for the chain but I wanted to give it ample chance to drop). Then I continued to kill grind until it finally dropped.

I didn't see this particular comment elsewhere.
I farmed for a few hours killing everything in sight with my 120 pally BS. Nothing. I killed a Deathguard on top of the scaffolding and looted him but no pattern. As I was scrolling across the screen I noticed my cursor turned in to the loot symbol when I moved across the toolbox sitting next to the Deathguard. So I looted the toolbox and there was the pattern!

Saw no lootable chest/box that Candilla mentions, but the plans still dropped from the guardians under 30mins of casual killing. (Fairly slow respawn)

3rd Plan in the run today, dropped sooner than the others. Still a bit of a Grind, but easier than the Belt and Boots Plans.
To start with, take the time to read the comments by capnbiff, Mahmoth, Helassaid, and Helvar below. They are quite useful and will help with your Grind. Candilla's comment is incorrect, as the "toolboxes" are static background fluff. I am willing to bet a Mount (pick one!) that they had killed a Guardian next to a toolbox, and when mousing over the area where the 'loot' should be, the cursor just happened to show the 'loot' symbol while it was over a toolbox. And, I have seen many instances where the 'loot box' was not where the -corpse- appeared to be. Just in case, I tested it by checking every toolbox I could find in the area with no results.
Doing the Quest chain mentioned below will reward you with the Deathforge Key, allowing access to the Guardians behind the portcullis for more Drop chances. Killing just those around the pit may result in a wait for spawns. As this is a Quest hub of sorts in the area, you will be facing competition from both Horde and Alliance, making it an even longer slog, so access to the Guardians behind the portcullis could make a difference. Not necessary to do it, but an option. I did not, and did have some pauses in my Grind because of it.
SOP here was to mash everything that got in my way, but focusing on the Guardians. There were usually two nodes of Ore in the cave area, Adamantite or Fell Iron, worth getting if you are a Miner, and they respawn pretty quickly. capnbiff was spot-on with his Drop Chance Guess for my Grind, as the Plans dropped on my 80th kill.
The one surprise was the sheer number of Marks that dropped, both types, making this an area I would consider Farming for them. Otherwise, loot was just some vendor trash, a couple greens, and tons of Netherweave Cloth.
