Basically to Prospect this ore, you get ~15% chance of getting a blue, and then a 85% chance to get 0, 1, or 2 green gems. Occasionally you will get a blue and green gems, but that's quite rare. The powder should also not be vendored as it is a reagent for making Mercurial Adamantite.
In contrast, fel iron ore gives you the same prospecting rate to get green gems, but less than half the chance to get blue gems. That said, if you can buy fel iron ore for less than half of what adamantite ore cost, then you shoul be ahead gold-wise by prospecting that.
TO APPEND TO MY PREVIOUS POST (Green text above).
Patch 2.1.X changed the drop rates of blue gems, it is now 16.2% (instead of 15%) to get a blue gem. Previously, you would also have a chance to get zero gems in a prospect, that is now not the case, so the "overall" chance to get green gems has increased around 10%, and the chance to get blue gems has increased by 1.2%.

Can someone explain how Adamantite Ore can be mined from Ogres & Basalisks? You cant even mine the rock elementals.
The drops are wrong too. You cant loot the Withered Corpses in Netherstorm, they turn into the fleshfiends if you get close or attack them.
Hell, I wouldnt mind if you could get the ore from so many things. Means I could use Adamantite Shells more often.

i prospected 40 or so stacks today. i got about 38(i think) blue gems.
got unlucky for part and went 6 stacks with no blue gem then immediately after i got 6 in a row. took a SS of it even. its very streaky

The actual prospecting rate is more than 18% now.
If you total up all the blue gems, and divide it by the total as of 9/17/07 these are the numbers from Wowhead itself:
Prospecting %
This mineral ore has been prospected 245820 times.
Talasite - 7979
Dawnstone - 7717
Noble Topaz - 7668
Living Ruby - 7490
Star of Elune - 7392
Nightseye - 7376
-----------------------------------
Total - 45622
45622 / 245820 =
18.55%
chance to get a blue gem.
If the Wowhead data hasn't been reset with the 2.1.x patch then the actual prospecting rate might is even greater than this since it will average with old data that was at 15%.

You shouldn't sell these. Get a jewelcrafter friend and let him/her prospect them all for you. From my experience, you will always get one rare gem out of a stack of Adamantite Ore... you will also get 4 powders for making Mercurial Adamantite. Let your friend craft that rare gem if he/she is able(which will sell even more), if not, the gem itself will still worth a hell lot. Turn all the powders into Mercurial Adamantite(which also worth alot)... Primal Earth worth almost nothing.(and extremely easy to obtain as a miner... I didn't farm any, yet I have 3 stack of Primal Earth sitting in my bank eating dust)
After doing that, you should be able to turn a stack of Adamantite Ore(20g) into rare gems and Mercurial Adamantite worth at least 50g.(you get loads of small uncommon gems too~)
Note: This method only works on certain servers... such as mine, in which a stack of Adamantite worth only 15g and any rare gem other than Talasite(which worth 30g) will worth over 40g.... crafted ones all worth over 50g. Primal Earth worth 3g and Mercurial Adamantite worth 20g.

Prospecting is one of the best and easiest ways to make gold, depending on your servers economy.
Simply hit 350 Jewelcrafting, get a few "in demand" gems, and buy up all the Adamantite Ore you can find. Do not buy recipes for gems that aren't good for a class, eg don't buy recipes for gems like + to spirit...
Undercut everyone. Learn what your gem prices are, and what you need to sell at in order to profit.
Here's an average day's (this morning, actually) run from prospecting for me.

Here's my take on those numbers, regarding probability. I know from personal experience that these are not dependent events or, at least, it's not a rule set in stone that only one blue gem can drop from a single Prospect. I've seen a Talasite and Living Ruby come from a single 5-stack of Adamantite Ore (not mine unfortunately), which leads me to believe that these are independent events.
Using your table above for drop counts of each blue gem from the total prospecting seen, you can work out individual probabilities for each blue gem:
Talasite - 7979/245820 ~= 0.0324587
Dawnstone - 7717/245820 ~= 0.0313928
Noble Topaz - 7668/245820 ~= 0.0311935
Living Ruby - 7490/245820 ~= 0.0304694
Star of Elune - 7392/245820 ~= 0.0300707
Nightseye - 7376/245820 ~= 0.0300056
The chance of any single one of these
not
dropping is then one minus that respective probability:
Chance of Talasite NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0324587 = 0.967541
Chance of Dawnstone NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0313928 = 0.968607
Chance of Noble Topaz NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0311935 = 0.968806
Chance of Living Ruby NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0304694 = 0.969530
Chance of Star of Elune NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0300707 = 0.969929
Chance of Nightseye NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0300056 = 0.969994
Then the aggregate chance that
no
blue gems will drop is the product of the above numbers, or approximately 0.828180.
The chance that
any
blue gems will drop is then one minus the probability that
none
will drop, or
1 - 0.828180 = 0.171819
This is very close to the 18% you stated but not quite the same thing.
Edit: Also, please note that this number represents the probability that
one or more
blue gems will be prospected from a given 5-stack of Adamantite Ore. Combined with the average value of uncut blue gems on your server, you can use this to find the expected
minimum
value of a stack of Adamantite Ore.
For example, with Gary13579's list of prices below, the expected
minimum
value of a 20 stack of Adamantite Ore would be
4*0.171819*(10+70+40+30+30+40)/6 ~= 25.20g

Remember that, for Blacksmithers/Engineers/Jewlcrafters buying ore on the auction house, it takes TWO ores to make ONE bar. Make sure the ore you are buying is at least half the price of the bars on the AH (if you do plan using them for your profession), or you're getting ripped-off. Generally you wont find them at half price becuase they can be prospected, but sometimes you can find cheap ore.

It just might be a casuality, but I've noticed that when I mine in Quel'danas and prospect, I rarely get any blue gems(the quality, not the color). However, when I prospect adamantite from other placer (Nagrand above all) I've noticed a much higher droprate for blue gems. Probably It's just bad luck.

The vendor-prospect price of Adamantite Ore is about 23s/ea, comfortably over their vendor price. As I write this, the AH buyout is still about 50s, so selling them on the AH is a better approach - but if you need money fast, prospecting and vendoring the gems is smarter than just vendoring the ore.
Math:
110% chance of a "green drop", giving, on average, 1.5 gems. 41.25s off green gems.
Assuming a 20% chance of a "blue drop", giving one gem. 50s off blue gems.
100% chance of Adamantite Powder, worth 22.5s.
Total of 1g14s per set of 5, or 23s per item.

Just fly around the mountain edges of nagrand. Basically all the ogre caves, the deep ravine in the center, and all of the mountain edges.
Also, Blade's Edge is a good second choice, but I've always felt the route to be considerably longer, due to the fact that you need to make a lot of zig-zag passes.

Now that the days of TBC are gone and no one does anything on Quel'Danas any more, it is pretty much the -best- spot for adamantite farming? Why?
Contains only adamantite, rich adamantite, and khorium veins.
I've heard that the way node spawns work is as such (some of it is guesswork, though some of it was imparted by a friend who was a GM for WoW at one point):
Nodes are gathered into clusters. Clusters are basically a set of nodes that are linked together (usually near each other, but not always). When one node in that cluster is mined, another will spawn in a random spawn point from that group. This is why, if you look at gatherer data, even after sitting in one spot for ages and ages, usually no ore will spawn at spawn points near you actively if no one is mining you. Else you could go to somewhere like Silithus and just see Thorium veins out the wazoo.
The reason Quel'Danas is so great is because there are only six clusters in total. What's more is that every cluster only has one spawn point. From timing, I think I have nailed the cluster respawn rate to be 5 minutes. This means, per 5 minute circuit, you will mine 6 nodes. Between normal and rich veins, this will be an average of 20-24 ore at LEAST per circuit. An hour of farming will net you 240 ore, or 12 stacks. Add in the extra gems you get, and this is an incredible spot to farm once you're at 325 JCing and want to boost it up, or just want to make some quick cash. Adamantite goes for 50g/stack on my server. The TBC uncommon gems go for 2-4 each in some cases, so you could easily net 700g here in an hour depending on server type.
When doing this route, a couple things: First, don't feel like you should skip any ore nodes if you want an easier route or if you find one's not spawned yet. If no one else is mining it'll take you less than 5 mins to do the full circuit and grab all the nodes, skipping any will just mean you wait longer.
If one is not there, it means you've got there too fast. Just wait a few seconds, it should respawn shortly unless someone's jacking your ore.
And here is a map of the nodes on QD: (My paint skillz are leet)
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx292/tertialux/QD_Miningjpg.jpg
EDIT:
With the release of Cataclysm it seems that the same 6 "clusters" remain intact, but Blizzard sneakily added a couple more spawn points for each cluster. Kaputtfurleben has kindly created a new map a couple comments down which shows these points.

The best place I found to mine adamantite is in terrokar forest and Nagrand.
Although Terrokar has a lot of Fel iron nodes too. I did one lap of terrokar and found about 50% fel iron, 45% adamantite and 5% khorium. Maybe just lucky with the khorium mind.
One lap of nagrand though going into all the caves netted me aaround 110 bars in one lap plus lots of motes of fire and earth!
Hope this helps

Farming
Adamantite
, some Khorium and a lot of motes in the
superior area
for it:
Isle of Quel'Danas.
Here are the facts:
There are 18 nodes. Of these 5 to 7 will spawn for each lap you do, and any of them can at any point spawn as a Khorium ore, but two of them seem to do it more often than the others. It´s 2 of the 3 at the top east 61,44 and 60,40.
LOCATIONS:
EAST:
9 along the east coastline all but one along the hillside, not the waterline.
The single one in the water is at 61,44,( one of the top 3 NE spots.) After the top three, it´s all in a straight line from north to south so no point giving coords here, except for the top two =60,40 and 62,40 ( so you know where to start :))
NORTHWEST:
The other 9 is in the NW area between Sunwell Plateau--Dawnstar Village--Sun's Reach Armory.
There is nothing below Sunwell Plateau apart from the two on the horizontal line between 37,51(Just below SP) and 47,50(Sun's Reach Armory), so coming up that coastline on your lap, just go along the waterline up.
Coords for NW nodes:
37,51
36,44
35,35
39,35
43,32
45,37
50,41 = One shelf up NW of " The Dawning Square "
49,46 = One shelf up NW of " The Dawning Square "
47,50 = Sun's Reach Armory. nw spitting distance from arms/weap. vendor.
Well I think that´s all you need to know people.
Good luck with your mining,JC,gathering of wealth or whatever:)

P.s. The Adamantite is found all through out Nagrand.. a lot around the other ridges, some in the caves, some on random hills. What a pain.

BC drop spawn rates are pretty bad. Where I was averaging approximately 100 ore every half hour in Azeroth, I'm averaging 60 adamantite ore every half hour in Outland.
I tried Nagrand first which had a horrible spawn rate for me, only 3 nodes in a 10 minute circuit. Then I tried Shadowmoon Valley which wasn't much better. Surprisingly Terokkar Forest was the best adamantite zone for me. This is where I averaged my 60 ore every half hour.
Mining ore in BC sucks. I can't wait to get the heck out of the horrible 300-375 bracket. :/

Here is a picture of the route I run in Nagrand.
I am not claiming Nagrand is the best zone to farm Addy Ore; however, I have farmed every zone in Outlands for one item or another and I have found Nagrand to be the most efficient for Addy Ore simply because of the route I have highlighted in the picture above. If you follow that route, you will clean the zone up of most ore to the point of other players complaining in general (if they so happen to be farming when you are).
A few things to note:
A) You will not hit every node with this route; but that is not the point. This is a very efficient route in that you are constantly moving/constantly mining. If your goal is to hit all of the nooks and crannies of a zone, your goal isn't to be a proficient farmer.
B) The only time you are remotely retracing your steps during a pass is in the Halaa area. However, there are quite a few spawn points in this area, so don't think it a waste of time. Each pass through the zone is taking you over "new" ground. This maximizes node spawns. Also, this route is a complete circle so you never have to "start over." You just keep flying the route and it'll keep repeating itself.
C) Notice I have you passing over multiple caves:
Only go inside a cave if there are multiple nodes inside of the cave; and/or there is a rich addy node; and/or there is a khorium node.
Otherwise it is a waste of time. If you fly over the cave, your map will tell you how many nodes are in there. Taking 10 seconds to fly over the cave first will save you 3 minutes of running in for one small node. This is especially true up in the Warmaul Hill area as the one cave is quite large.

Quel'Denas is probably the best place to farm as long as you're alone. Nodes respawn every 5 minutes but it takes 4 minutes to do a circuit. So do a full circuit then type "/sw 1:00" without quotes. Wait for the stopwatch to count down to 0 and do the whole thing over again.
I was able to get about 40 Adamantite ore and a bunch of other stuff every circuit.

I just got done farming Isle of Quel'Danas { For you that dont know how to get there You can simply take the portal from Shattrath in the outlands straight to Isle of Quel'Danas. You will find 4 to 5 nodes of Adamantite ore and 1 node of khorium ore (you need to be 375 to mine khorium nodes) After 22 mins of farming i got 60 Adamantite ore. I was not able to farm khorium ore. Seeing that im not at level 375. I went to the outlands and it was taken way to long to find nodes of Adamantite ore even know i was the only one there i got more feliron then Adamantite ore. Farming Isle of Quel'Danas is vary easy there are no hills to go up and down and around. You cant fly but even on a ground mount it takes about 5 mins and the nodes you have farm are back as soon as you get back to them. On top of this i have never seen a rich Adamantite node in the out lands and you will find a few in Isle of Quel'Danas. Pending if they come back as a rich or not. I hope some one out there takes the time to read this. Happy farming guys and if you find this as helpful please upvote thanks.

The best place to farm these are IMO Manaforge Ara in Netherstorm, inside the cave and outside it aswell, they respawn every 2 mins or so. Usually 2-3 rich ones every third respawn. I got 4 stacks in less than 30 mins. Hope this helps
They had respawned in the time it took me to write the first post.
10 stacks now, 22 mins after my second post, which was 1 min after my first one.
Ok, so two more came to my farming spot, guess someone saw this post. Got 15 stacks in 1 hour. Enough for my JC and bit of my BS leveling

Copied over from my comment on Adamantite Node:
The best possible place to mine this is in Netherstorm. There is a the mine with it's entrance at 61.0, 45.7. This mine has an almost instant re-spawn of the nodes. By the time you get to one end of the mine, the nodes at the beginning have re-spawned. Happy Hunting!

Based on info from other recent posts, I checked out the two caves in Netherstorm. First I checked out the mine at 61,45 and then went to the mine at 26,44.
The mine at 61,45 is easier to farm, IMO. It covers a much smaller area, so you can see the nodes that have respawned without having to run back and forth between a lot of dead ends. The only thing I dislike is that there are multiple levels within one section of the cave, and it can be tricky to figure out which level the node is on.
Both mines have creatures that respawn just as quick (or quicker) than the nodes, but the guys in the mine at 26,44 drop Marks of Sargeras and other items needed to grind rep with the local faction, if that matters. Both mines have 3 nodes that respawn at about the same rate and yield about the same results. (About 3 stacks of Adamantite ore in 30 minutes, plus a couple of gems, elementium ores, several motes of earth, etc.)

With the days of standalone realms behind us, it's gotten a bit more difficult to farm for stuff like Fel Iron Ore or Adamantite Ore. It's gotten to the point where it's actually easier for me to stand in one place and wait for respawn than to compete with the however many people flying around on their cloud serpents.
Personally, I like standing in the cave atop Warmaul Hill-- specifically, the middle of the cave at 26.19, 14.40, where a node happens to spawn. There you can see literally every node that spawns in the cave-- there's only about four or so-- and run to one whenever one spawns. That said, there's a bunch of people who come in for ogre kills, but if you stand long enough, you should still be able to get a lot of ore from just those nodes.
There's two major entrances-- one on the bottom floor at 27.10, 18.48, and another at 27.27, 11.47. (There's also one at the very bottom floor at 28.12, 13.37.) There's not really any other way to get back up a floor than to go outside and fly to the entrance, but it still beats flying all over Nagrand.

I just went farming for it today at the Isle of Queldanas and it was pretty consistent. The nodes spawned again often enough that I was able to go around in circles over and over at a good pace and get all I had come for. I got 170 ore, plus 8 khorium ore and between 20 to 40 eternium ore (not sure because I don't remember how much I had before that). I also got loads of primal earth.
Just wanted to check in and say yes this place is still good!

In 7.0, now that cross realm no longer works the way it used to and you can't just hop to a low pop realm and get ore, I'm finding that on my high-pop realm, this ore is heavily farmed, with a terrible respawn rate, and really hard to find. All of the Auchindoun and Coilfang 5-mans have 2 nodes of it, with Steamvaults having an additional 2 nodes of fel iron. However, all Steamvault nodes are normal size, if you want rich nodes (which have increased chance for eternium), my favorite choice is Mana Tombs. This one has 1 rich node. If you're on a stealthy you can get all the way through it without killing anything, and there's a nice loop at the end to get out quickly and start over.
CORRECTION: After doing more runs of this I discovered that rich nodes are not guaranteed, however they are very common in all of the 5-mans except Steamvaults (where they don't seem to spawn at all).

I kept flying around and they would respawn as I was flying by. So far for me this has been the best place to farm . Also no competition.

Mining on the Isle of Quel' Danas is only giving one piece of ore from nodes, even from Rich Adamantite Deposits.

It is now 10.2.5 and I went back to Outland just for nostalgia. Back then, I used to fly laps around Terokkar Forest and look for ore. Spawn nodes were pretty plentiful back then. Now, I found approximately 7 nodes during two entire laps. None of them "rich" nodes. Also, I was the only player from my faction in the entire zone.
I've experienced the same thing in other old zones. It seems as if they've just erased half of the spawn nodes.
