As of 1-26-07 Lagoon Eels no longer drop Motes of Mana, they now drop Motes of Water.
'Tis a pity.
have any one even found one of these gas clouds yet? i have been farming life and shadow gas clouds but i have never even seen one of the mana clouds
As of Jan 29, 2006 - The Shimmerscale Eels are no longer dropping Mote of Mana, and are now dropping Mote of Water instead.
Mana Wraiths near Area 52 have a pretty good drop rate compared to anything else I've farmed.
These tend to drop motes of mana pretty well. i was farming for about an hour and i got 3 primals (30motes) and another 5 motes. the only thing i suggest doing to save time is try to avoid the other earth elemental things that are around them. this can easily be done if u are lvl 70 and have ur flying mount.
Best mobs to farm these (and spot) is
The trick is to kill them fast (under 10sec seems to be about right). If you don't the mageslayers will use spellreflect and the mana seeker will use mana burn.
If you kill them fast enough as a caster they wont do anything! (they have about 5200hp each)
One hour = 70-100 motes for me (i need 6-10sec for one mob 0/21/40 wl)
I've been farming mana wraiths as a 66 destro lock with my felhunter as a pet. You can usually nuke him down to about 30% or so before he does his mana burn ability but a well timed silence/counterspell will do the trick on these guys.
Their drop rates on these motes is really streaky. I'll go 20 minutes w/o seeing one and then the next 20 getting 16 motes. But keep at it, these are very easy to kill.
I'll lvl up a bit more and start hitting the mageslayers next.
Wish I woulda read this earlier. Spent the last 45 min farming eels and got 11 Mote of Water & no Mana. . . reading ftw! :(
35.58 in Netherstorm is a good place to grind these things.
55, 89 is probably the best place to farm, insanely fast respawn, caster mobs, die very fast.
I farmed void monstrosity in netherstorm for 3 hours ended up with 80 motes very good drop rate and consistent. There weren't many people grinding this area either ,but the mobs are plentiful and spread out over a large area and 2 people could work this area and not have any real downtime. I also got some greens and a blue and a singing crystal axe :) which sold for a nice chuck of G's.
Warp Monstrosities on the edge of the land West of Stormspire tend to drop mote of mana at a fairly good rate. The only snag is that the mobs are quite densely packed in with some earth elemental types called Sundered Thunderers, have to keep double checking behind me, and kiting the warps around to avoid aggroing 2 mobs at once :)
If you're a skinner who needs Motes of Mana, a good mob to farm is the "Phase Hunter" in Netherstorm. They are skinnable and drop Mote of Mana at a reasonable rate.
I made a quick outline of where all the best places to farm motes are. Very useful if, like me, you are farming many of them for a recipe of some sort.
(Zone) NPC name - Coordinates - % drop rate - link to page at Wohead
Mote of Air:
(Nagrand) Storming Wind-Ripper - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 33.9% -
Mote of Fire:
(Nagrand) Raging Fire-Soul - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 34.1 -
Mote of Water:
(Terokkar Forest) Crashing Wave-Spirit - 63.17 (North-Western Throne of Elements) - 33.7 -
Mote of Earth:
(Blade's Edge Mountains) Sundered Rumbler - (Basically above and all below Area 52) - 18.8 -
Mote of Mana:
(Netherstorm) Mana Wraith - 36.60 and 31.73 (Anywhere above Area 52 and more below. While you're at it, kill the Nether Rays as well, they have just as good of a chance to drop and are mostly in the same area) - 25.8 -
Mote of Life:
(Zangarmarsh) I didn't find any specific place to farm for these because the zone is just rich with them. But I would suggest farming the Bogg/ Starving Bogg Lords and Fungal /Starving Fungal Giants because they are all very close. - The Spawning Glen (SW Zangarmarsh) and East of there is the Quagg Ridge - Very similar drop rates on all 4 mobs that I pointed out, 18.2 to 18.8 -
Mote of Shadow:
By far the most commonly found mote. This is dropped in almost every zone and can be easily farmed anywhere. But there may be a few exceptional areas just because npcs that drop them are close together, non-elite, and easy to kill. Here's one spot in a few that are exceptional:
(Nagrand) Voidspawn - Again, no specific coords, but all around Oshu'Gun, the bigass crystal SW Nagrand. - 18.4 -
As an arms warrior the mageslayers were piece of cake, really good spawning time, a lot of mobs on the same place, paradise for a warrior.
I've found the Mana Snappers to be best for speed and abundance
Since Motes have a use function, you can drag them to your Action Bar to easily track how many you got while farming.
by FAR the easiest place to get these is in Wizard Row in Kirin'Var Village, SouthEast Netherstorm. Kill Mana Seekers and MageSlayers. I got 3 Primals in 20 minutes... WHY, oh, why, can't fires be this easy to get? Blizzard needs to make some changes, considering how NECESSARY Primal Fires are in just about everything...
I have compiled a mini guide which is useful for pasteing into addons sucks as
(notepad type addon for easy reading)

As a mage i found the best place to farm Motes of Mana was from the Phase Hunters, just outside Eco-Dome Midrealm.
They're well spaced out and not immune to any spells.
Good respawn rate too.
warp chasers do not drop mote of mana
Thanks for the hints guys ifound that the mana seekers and mageslayers drop the motes of mana most often thanks.
I found that farming them at the south-east corner of shadowmoon valley has very good drop rates. The mobs there do minimal damage, and it is really rare to find another grinder. You need a flying mount to reach the summit though.
I've always stuck with this guy:
The sheer volume, respawn rate, and ability to skin them makes them great. And they're stupidly easy to kill. But I think they hate casters. They have a mana burn or something. I usually farm them on my feral druid for my lock.
Quite frankly they're so easy to farm that I don't understand why primal mana is so expensive. Just laziness?
The warp monstrosities -
- in northwestern Netherstorm are very good to farm for motes of mana. I just got 30 in less than an hour. The plus to these is they're not as popular as the other spots in Netherstorm. They also have a very good droprate. I went to farm two other spots in Netherstorm and it was a little crowded and then came to the monstrosities and was the only one there.
The only setback to the warp monstrosities is that they are a little densely packed and there are just as many rock elementals in the same spot as they are. However, if you are smart about it you won't have to fret. I only aggroed a rock elemental once, and I got a mote of earth out of it!
you can buy these motes from an NPC from stormspire in Netherstorm.... all motes are there.........
Phase wyrm's are great for farming these. Fast respawn rate, very low competition, and no other mobs while "out of phase". I get usually 5 motes just while doing my daily (avoiding the wyrms as much as possible).
Best spot to farm is in Netherstrom, near Area 52 if u kill mana bonars and wrenchcokes u will pwn with umbar str.
wtb primal mana :P
After grinding Mana Seekers and Magekillers for 60 min as a feral druid i did end up whit 192 kills and 85 mote of mana.
I farmed 40 of them in Netherstorm in an hour. The drop rate seems to fluctuate; sometimes I got 10 motes in a row, sometimes I went through 10 mobs without getting any.
Another fantastic spot to farm thes is from the Phase Wyrms (
) in Blade's Edge mountains. To see them, you have to go to Bash'ir landing and become phased. It's part of the Shattered Sun Offensive quest called Maintaining the Sunwell Portal (
While phased, you have a vast number of them and they drop both motes and apexis shards. No mana burn or nasty effects. The only stipulation is that you must be at least level 70.
At 33, 77 in netherstorm i farmed 40 motes of mana off of Warp Aberations...it was awesome!
I found Motes of Mana off of Warp Monstrosities and Motes of Earth off Sundered Thunderers, mobs are together all over Netherstorm.
i find the mana wraths outside the hold to drop them Every 2-3Kills in an hour i farmed 11 primals not to bad as theres alot
You can turn 10 (9) Motes of Mana into 1 Primal Mana.
BUT You CANNOT Turn 1 Primal Mana into 10(9) Motes of Mana !
Absolutely cold not agree enough about the Mana Wraiths. They spawn quickly, are very easy to kill, and are arranged quite nicely for ranged farming. If you're an enhancement shaman (my personal choice), these are easily farmed by using Maelstrom'd lightning bolts to pull and then you can tear them to pieces in seconds in melee. It's great to setup your totems in a central location and pull 3-5 of them in quick succession. In this fashion, I easily farmed four primals worth in under twenty minutes.
Another vote for the Mana Wraiths for farming Mote of Mana.
I needed a Primal Mana (for an affordable Primal Might...), and went farming in Netherstorm after reading the comments about the drop from Mana Wraiths. I was not disappointed...
I found a whole "herd" of them between Ruins of Enkaat and Eco-Dome Midrealm, and just went crazy with my lvl 74 prot-pally. After all the mayhem, I found myself with:
36 Motes of Mana
from 50 Wraiths
. Technically a a 72% drop rate, however many Wraiths drop 2 motes so this is probably a little off. Still, very nice for about 20 minutes of farming!
I also tried my luck with the local Phase Hunters, but after killing 15 I only found 1 Mote of Mana. They may be skinnable, but I still stick with the Mana Wraiths for some quick results.
As of 8/7/2011 wizards terrace no longer has mana wraiths. However the Crumbling Wastes, and Ruins of Enkhat have plenty along with phase hunters and nether rays. 4 primal mana worth in about 40 mins. drop rates are consistent with WOWHead. North and Northwest of Area 52 for your mote of mana needs.
If you have the option, pay Karazhan a visit. More specifically, the area where you fight The Curator. When I solo'd Karazhan, after fighting The Curator and all the trash in his room, I had 5 Primal Mana sitting comfortably in my bags.
In Shatt, Exarch Nasuun gives the quest "Maintaining the Sunwell Portal" where you have to get a phase device out in Blades Edge Mtns. While phased, the creatures drop a good bit. Even some while out of phase. I found this to be a nice, easy alternative. The quest is a daily for the Shattered Sun Offensive. (70+)
Aether Ray in blades edge seem to have a decent drop rate
Im killing Mana Wraiths arround ruins of Enkaat , there are many of them there so its easy =)
One run solo through Karazhan netted me 11 primal mana's in around an hour and a half. You get them mostly from the mana wyrms halfway through the raid.
If you're an engineer, using the mote extractor on gas clouds (Arcane Vortex) in Netherstorm can yield a good amount of primals, as long as you have a 280+ flyer. It took me about a half hour to make one full circuit of the zone, and at the end I had just over five primals. Each "land mass" in the zone had two clouds at a time on average. There are no clouds on the small nw island, none around tempest keep, and (as one might expect) none will be located in the eco domes. I only have a 280 flyer on my engineer, but with the amount I collected in the time I was there, you should be able to get about 10/hour using this method (unless the clouds take longer to respawn.
Side note - aside from the clouds appearing on the minimap, you will know when one is in the area because the nearby mobs will have a "twinkling" effect on them (similar to characters affected by shaman totems).
I know that a miner can turn Primal Earth and Primal Fire into motes of earth and fire, respectively. Is there any way to turn Primal Mana into Motes of Mana? Trying to consolidate my bag/bank space, but don't want to lose mats...
Honestly, for hunters, the Aether Ray's in the Ogri'La area of Vortex Summit (29,65) are the best bet. Hunters can hit the ones flying further overhead and using Track Beasts can show you exactly where they are at all times, because they are not aggro and appear as yellow dots. I farmed out 80 of these (for 8 Primal Mana) and it was much faster than anywhere else.
if you need these, just take an 85 into Kharazan. A decent ways in (including and just before the Guardian's Library) there are heaps.
Best place to farm these is in southeastern Netherstorm. Kirin'var Village
A quick tip: don't farm Mana Wraith with an Arcane Mage. Those mobs are still immune to arcane damage.
tl;dr the most rewarding way to farm items dropped by mobs is in a group.
This may be in part due to personal loot changes in a recent BfA patch. Other farmers are potential group mates, they are not your "competition" unless they are from the opposing faction!
I went to Wizard Row in southern Netherstorm in Outland to farm Mote of Mana from
. After about 10 minutes I had 10 motes = 1
and I was feeling pretty happy about it.
Just then someone /w me "are you farming primals?" and asked me if I wanted to group. I said "how does that work, do we roll on them?" She said "no, it's personal loot, but we can loot each others' corpses and it goes a lot faster."
So we grouped up and I noticed an immediate uptick in my mote loot rate. She suggested we kill for one minute, then loot for one minute, which I tried but I wasn't quite that organized. The killing does go quicker if you don't loot after each kill, but you also have to loot within a couple minutes or the corpses despawn.
The mobs just started spawning like crazy. I would run up to loot a sparkling pile of corpse crystals and 2 more mobs would spawn on top as I was looting. She said they would "hyperspawn" because they were mobs that were part of a quest, so the more you kill, the more they spawn.
She said in a 5-man group it went even quicker, and that grouping was now the best way to farm anything that mobs drop, including transmogs and pets.
After 50 minutes in the group, I had 244 motes, 14 green armor and weapons, 156 g worth of gray vendor trash, a Khorium lockbox and 2
. 24+ primals in an hour is completely insane and unbelieveable based on any farming experiences I have ever had previously. But it happened, and she said she got about the same.
So empty out your bags and head to your desired farming zone, and when you see another farmer from your faction: invite them to a group!
