Where's a good place to get this? I assumed that the higher the level monster the more knothide leather (over leather scraps) id get, but it doesnt seem to be the case. The drop rate seems to be about 20% on any skinnable mob, which is really poor and makes for frusterating farming.
So far my best results have come from Talbuk Thorngrazers with a little over 50% drop rate.
I've found a good place to farm these (at level 70) is from the Barbscale Crocolisks in Ecodome Midream in Netherstorm.
I think the most profitable way to farm this would be to find an area that non-elites drop more than one piece at a time. From what I've seen, the nonelite trash in the Black Morass will drop 2-3 scraps or full pieces. If anyone else finds a spot like this, post!
Try skinning mobs lvls 66+ to get a higher % of knothide leather as opposed to the scraps.
No mob will give Heavy Knothide Leather when skinned, that is only craftable with LW skill and 5 knothide leather = 1 heavy knothide leather.
Combine leather farming with other valuable item drops such as motes (of any kind except shadow and maybe life) for max profit.
The drop rate in BM used to be great but I heard they nerfed it thoroughly so I wouldn't bet on it anymore its a long way to go.
In my experience, drop rate is about 26 percent from Bull Elekk, based on 328 kills. Although the listing includes Ripfang Linx as a good source of Knothide Leather, I would not recommend grinding on them for two reasons: first, the drop rate is worse than that from Bull Elekks, second, they are much harder to kill.
Blackwind Sabercats have the highest drop percentage of non elite mobs. You will need a flying mount to reach them. Unfortunately they have a small population.
Clefthoof bulls in Nagrand only have a 30% drop rate, but there is also a 30% chance they will skin some thick clefthoof leather. This sells very well on the AH. In among the bulls are elementals that drop motes and wild Eleks that drop Consortium rep items.
Thick clefthoof leather:
Ive been killing Talbuk Throngrazers
like 4-5 at a time with a healer and I'm hunter for a set of 5 kills i usally get 4 Knothide Leathers. I kill the ones in the northern lakes wheres theres like 5-7 close togther. Also there yellow so easy to manage
I had gone to BM, thinking I was so clever with the thought I could just kill the first three crocs near the entrance, reset the instance, and repeat without having to worry about running around and aggro'ing other unnecessary mobs. While that was a generally clever plot, the crocs hit crazy hard and fast and in the end only dropped x2 or x3 Knothide Leather Scraps. (Though I did get lucky and one dropped, gasp, 1 whole Knothide Leather!) I became distraught after thirty minutes.
I've had much better luck with the Talbuk Thorngrazers. My favourite spot is a peninsula below Garadar. Whenever I go, it seems there are no Clefthoof Bulls or elementals roaming on that particular piece of land. :)
The best place for Knothide leather is Nagrand Talbuk Thorngrazer's Cords 52.2,46.5 Now although they drop alot of scraps they are easily killed and there are hundreds in this area and the re-spawn rate is awesome. I Grinded 300 Knothide leather in just over a hour.
Go to the eco-dom midrealm. (45, 52) and kill the ripfang lynx. They drop a 50%+ droprate or knothide leather.
I suppose another viable solution is farming Black Morass. Altough the droprate has been nerfed and the mobs hit quite hard, a decently geared farming character can make a good profit there from skinning and netherweb silk, especially if (s)he brings summoned food.
Nagrand, Thorngrazers are easy to kill and i get stacks of knothide leathers in like 2hrs. Enjoy gathering and have fun! :)
i found either the lions cats up by sylvanaar in bloods edge mts or the talbuks in nagrand have good skin rate of knothide leathers
tried cats drop rate is low and the cats are scattered apart. tried Barbscale Crocolisks better drop rate and not as scattered.
Go to Netherstorm, from there go to the Farfield Echodome, its at: 45, 11 (generally in that area), the droprate so far, has been very good for me within the last 5 mins on every skin that is :).
See yaz bye.
One of the best places I've found by far is Oronok's Farm, just north east of the Altar of Sha'tar in SMV. The Domesticated Felboars have a very high % to drop knothide leather, with an added bonus of no trash loot so grinding them is quick and easy. Even if you aren't well geared and end up taking quite a bit of damage, Horde players will get healed by Oronok. :P
I managed to get 20 Knothide Leather in about 5-7 minutes. :)
Agree with all the posts on BM. heres what i suggest trying. I jumped in a group that was running reg, we blew through it 3 times. i skinned everything possible, and walked away with over 5 stacks. the drop rates are good on the non elites, and the elites usually drop 2 pieces each. if you can get in a group doing this on reg, they might be looking for certain drops, its so quick and easy that you can run it over and over.
Zones + Farmers = PVP. instance farming is undisturbed.
if at all possible, be the only skinner.
i think the best place is nagrand, just between the throne of elements and garadar... talbuk thorngrazers had an exceptional skin rate of about 94%... in less than 30 minutes i killed about 50 and only 3 didn't drop knothide leather, but knothide leather scraps, 2-3 per time... it's a skinner's heaven there...
If you find yourself doing Underbog in the Coilfang Resevoir within Zangarmash, the skinnable mobs drop 1-2 knothide leather each. As a 63, I found myself leaving there with almost 3 stacks of Knothide Leather. This is a great way to get it if you're not 70 yet and if your group contains no other skinners.
My realm's economy is crazy.
A 20 stack of these sell for less than much lower level leathers go for.I'm lucky if I get a few gold per stack.
I knew I should have went mining.Copper bars sell for much higher than these do,and that's just insane!
This is a great fun way to make some gold. I was goofing off in Org and someone said they wanted to buy it in bulk. So I asked how much they wanted, they wanted 200 peices, or 10 stacks. I said sure thing and we set a price of 125g for the lot. Seemed fair as the leather was going for 10g on the auction house at the time.
About an hour and a half grinding the talbuks in nagrand later, I had my leather, got a leatherworker to turn my scraps into more and mailed the guy his mats. Easy 125g for me, plus the eight or so greenies they dropped, PLUS the junk items I sold in Halaa. The little river delta is the easiest place to farm for me (lvl 69)
Note: Usually leatherworkers trying to level up fast (buy in bulk) will be willing to pay a little more than the current price on the AH BECAUSE as soon as they buyout the stuff on the AH they're left with the highest prices and they NEED that leather.
Yeah. So if someone says they need to buy in bulk, snap up the opportunity.
Do theese sell 4 gd gold on the AH
I've had 100% luck with knothide skinned from felfire dimetradon just outside Shadowmoon valley horde post... 100% on nearly 60 kills and still going! F*ck you leatherworking! lols
North-West of Garadar are the Talbuk Thorngrazer's that spawn very crowded and there are a lot of them along the coast! A bit north-west and west of Garadar are there some Clefthoof Bulls that can be skinned for Thick clefthoof leather which can be selled for a high prize or used in the LW.
The best place i found to farm these, is in RazorThorn Shelf (require flying) in Hellfire
Casters beware thou, they stun alot
The best place to farm knothide leather is in shadowmoon valley near a small farm where domesticated felboars are the boars respawn almost instantly and are very easy to kill.I got 10+ stacks per hour farming there, definetly should check this place out
Confirmed : Oronok's Farm in SMV is the best place to farm knothide leather. the boars there drop no loot so you can straight skin them at about a ratio of 80% leather/20% scraps and respawn quickly. seriously, you kill one, turn around kill another and the first boar is already back. it should be noted though, there are also flayers there attacking the boars. BUT you can skin the boars they kill also, unless they are going back to eat ( ? ) them. the flayers drop silver and junk you can vend for at least 1 gold. not to mention, farmer Oronok is also a vender and does repairs so you can vend the junk right away!
this place is almost
perfect for farming.
I just went to the farm in smv and Domesticated boars are unlootable, what gives? must have got nuked by patch 3.2, bummer.
Boars in Oronok's farm are no longer skinable :|
as a side note, if you're aiming to get netherwing rep you may want to consider farming the netherwing rays in shadowmoon valley. they drop motes of mana, netherwing crystals, and occasionally even netherwing eggs, not to mention a high chance of getting leather instead of scraps. they're fairly easy to kill too, just watch out for the patrolling elites.
Post Patch 3.2, an undocumented change in "whole" Knothide Leather rates have increased dramatically from all mobs in Outland. I personally found the Talbuks in Nagrand to be the most reliable source of leather so far. Since Oronok's Farm and Black Morass have gotten huge nerfs in their abilities to provide Knothide, we (unfortunately) have to resort to good, ol' fashioned farming. Still, the increased rates in 3.2 should help a lot!
August 22, 2009: Killed a boar at Oronok's farm, it had no loot, didn't get the skinning icon.
Wherever people are getting piles of leather in SMV, it's not from Oronok's farm.
I cant find any such place i smv, at all. Ive walked all around the coords given no such place anymore I guess
Just tried the Domesticated Boars over in SMV and they don't seem to be skinable anymore as of 3.2.2.
If you have an 80 and are leveling an alt leatherworker, there is a very efficient way of farming a very impressive amount of those (or Heavy Knothide if you prefer). In my case it was my 65 Druid leatherworker, and my 80 Paladin.
Find the spawning point of
. It's the south-most pin on its map.
Get your 80 there. Now get your alt there.
Either wait for Bach'lor to walk (
) to the spawn point, or kill it 1-2 times and intercept it right at its spawn point. The goal is to have both of your characters and Bach'lor all at its spawn point and ready for action.
Now that you are all set, kill Bach'lor and the 9 Talbuk Thorngazers/Stags. Quickly loot all the bodies and log out.
Log on your leatherworker alt and skin the 10 bodies (every so often there will be a Wild Elekk or an Aged Clefhoof that spawns around the same place - you can kill them if you want to).
Again log out quickly and hop on your 80. Rinse and repeat.
Now a few words about why this method is so efficient.
You may need to move a little north from the spawn point. The goal is to find a point where you can just stand, fight, or skin. Ideally Bach'lor will be around you the moment you log on your 80... but these are details that will cost you no more than a few seconds if you don't get the exactly right. Oh, and kill any random wandering mobs while you are on your 80 - there are some air elementals and wandering gronn that may give your alt trouble.
Bach'lor and its pack have 2 minutes respawn timer.
All 10 (up to 12 if you count the random Elekk or Clefthoof) have a very high chance to drop Knothide Leather. You should be averaging 8-10 Leathers per clear.
With all the fighting, skinning, and relogging, that's 8-10 Leathers every 3 minutes or so. Multiple by 20, that's 160-200 Leathers, more grays than you will ever want, and the occasional green... all in one hour.
Seemingly extremely expensive these days. At least on my server I have not seen a stack below 60 gold in the last 4 days.
in SMV are great for farming. They have high drop rate of
, and they spawn fast.
They live around the green "lakes"(i.e. 31,40) so they are easy to find, and they give XP.
I usually goto Razorthorn Rise and kill the Ravagers up there. The droprate is very, very good.
Razorthorn Rise is on the border between Terrokar and HFP (North of Veil Reskk).
on my server ( aggramar) knothide leather goes atm for 45-50g per stack on the AH ... :)..also the heavy knothide leather goes for 100g each stack
If your skinner is level 80 with decent gear, best place to farm for this leather is Underbog (normal). Kill and skin all sporebats and rays, skip other mobs (when possible).
very good droprate (1-2 per mob)
you have to do whole instance to avoid dungeon limit and get most leather (largest packs of skinnable mobs are at start of instance and near end of it)
skinnable mobs are a bit scattered around (especially at start of instance
This item is essential for any Death Knight or any player level 60+. Mainly because of this-->
which provides an enchant to your shoulders and helm.
My suggestion is to hire a skinner to farm you some and the suggested value per piece is 40-50 silver each. Don't forget to tip for there services of getting you the leather which you should calculate the total and times it by .10 or .20 (10%-20%).
An example: I bought 40 pieces of these and paid 20 gold(which is 50 silver per piece) and gave a 4 gold tip(20 times .20(20%) to get the 20% tip)
Eco-dome Midrealm in Netherstorm have nearly a 100% drop rate for knot hide leather.
Not completely accurate. Just farmed there and its about the same if maybe higher slightly then the skinning results of beasts in Nagrand.
I got about 75-80% Knothide with the rest being scraps.
then I guess you could say it is 100% but that's about the same with the talbuks :/ )
Hi thought I would share with you the best way to get this leather.
Without doubt the best way to farm this is to stand on the Bach'lor spawn point.
He spawns with all of his gang so once you have killed them all and skinned them. skinning takes roughly 1 min.
He spawns again right where you stand over and over with all his gang. I found respawn time is also 1 min after you finish skinning. Thats just great. So the respawn for all 10 of them at the same time is about 2 min from time of there death.
I have submitted a crude screenshot of exactly where to stand to achieve this once you have found him the first time and killed him, move to the spot I have indicated.
Encase the screenshot doesn't get approved. the spot to find him is just to the right of the little pond right below forge camp fear.
P.S You will pretty much have bach'lor on lockdown so make sure to share the kill for ppl on the quest.
If you're lvl 80, and lvling leatherworking/skinning like me, you should go to Razorthorn Shelf in Hellfire, i got one stack of knothide leather in 6 minutes, and my druid is undergeared so you'll probably be faster yourself.
The droprate there so far looks like 75% : knothide leather dropped
nearly every single kill
I accidently stumbled upon them while searching for mobs to farm felscales, sadly they don't seem to drop these, maybe on a very low droprate.
Wanted to second (third?) the Razorthorn Shelf suggestion. 85 hunter here just picked up LW and farmed about 250 Knothide Leathers in this area in about an hour (counting the scraps I converted, real number probably more like 220 Knothides)
For a lvl 85, hands down the best place to farm these that I have found is netherwing ledge, in southwestern shadowmoon valley. They spawn on the edges of the 'island', and a full circuit around takes about 5 minutes and will net you approximately 15 leather. Netherwing Rays drop them 100%.
I paid 29g on my server for 17 knothide.....
Getting knothide leather from Bach'lor is a great idea he has a 2-4 min spawn time (i timed it myself) and spawns at 26, 52 in Nagrand. i used this on my 79 feral druid. It was the easiest and quickest method to farm knothide leather.
If you have an 85 tank, you can farm up about 4-5 stacks of knothide leather in about 10 minutes in Zul'Aman, just on all the Lynx trash. Each of the cubs (as well as each of the adult lynxes, and each of the neutral crocs) drops 1-3 leather, never any scraps.
First time poster on WowHead,
After grinding several spots that were mentioned here, I found that Black Morass is the fastest way to grind Knothide Leathers.
Realm - Drak'Tharon
Character - Grapes // Horde
Class - Death Knight (Blood)
Level - 85
Location - Caverns of Time: Black Morass (Normal)
In short, I calculated how much Knothide Leather you receive per hour.
After 20 runs (Possibly more after I'm done posting), here were my findings:
The only skinnable mobs when you enter are the Crocs and stealthed jaguars.
I went in a clockwise rotation around the map and finished at the center.
Also note, at level 85, it takes a half second to stand on top of the mob to gain aggro.
This was also done by mounting.
The average time to round up the mobs: 4.6 minutes (Keep in mind this was done mounting and I started the stopwatch as soon as I pass the NPC near the entrance)
Average time to loot and skin: 5.5 minutes
Average Knothide Leather per run: 38
Average Knothide Leather scraps per run: 12
Average repair bill per run: 97 silver
Average gold from vendoring trash items: 8 gold
-Try not to round up too many crocs/jaguars. I've found during my 3rd run that some despawn because it took too long. (A.k.a. it's a waste of time)
-Like I mentioned before, wait a half second to gain aggro while you're standing ontop of the mob.
-My rotation to AoE the mobs down were: Death and Decay -> Outbreak -> Pestilence -> Blood Boil. I continued to Blood Boil until everything died
-Some mobs such as the stealthed jaguars tend to come late, so don't fret when you don't see them
-If you are unable to see the pack of mobs you aggroed, don't fret either. They are simply slow and more than likely running at you.
-Try not to head too far south and start the event for Black Morass. (unless you wish to of course)
If you wish to farm these as level 80, you have 2 choices
Heroic Underbog - good source, those ray mobs drop average of 2-3 leather per kill
also green drops and what not will net you few hundred gold
bad part is your bag get full and can sell off easily
Shadowmoon vally-around the lava area south of Shadowmoon Village have tons of dino mobs to skin, once your have your circle, move across to area south of death forget to skin boars. when you get done clearing those, dino mobs should have respawned
cons-alot of scraps
both spot will get you farming min of hundred of these in 30 min
The fastest way to get this is pretty ugly too.
have a cooldown of about 3 minutes and spawn with their own cluster of mobs. A 80+ character with Master Riding can easily aoe Bach'lor and his adds, skin them and fly to Banthars spawn point in about 90 seconds. Killing, skinning those and flying back to Bach'lor takes about the same time. If timed right both groups will spawn about 5-10 seconds after arriving at their respective spawn points. That means indefinite aoe-farming of 2 elites + adds on respawn.
Now to the bad part: Both Bach'lor and Banthar are not only some of the nicest rare beasts, but are both crucial parts of the Hunting quest chain in Nagrand. If they are killed on respawn, there is no way for other players to finish this huge quest chain and gain the achievement for this part of the Nesingwary quests meta-achievement!
So, if you really do this, be social and warn others in the zone about it and let them kill the elites. You could get banned for not doing so.
Black Morass is definately the place to be as of 4.0.6.
I'm a level 85 Moonkin, and taking ALL the crocs and jaguars in BM, including gathering them together, looting and skinning, took me around 15 mins, and gave me a total of 61 Knothide Leather (after i turned scraps into knothide leather).
If you've got a decent aoe availeble, and ur char is in the appropiate level for it, BM farming is the way to go for Knothide farming.
Suprised nobody has mentioned Karazhan, I find it actually quite nice for Knothide.
Usually people skip the part with the beasts altogether, but if you go right through the Servant's Quarter as you enter the instance it's like a goldmine for this stuff, clearing the Fel Hounds and Bats (Spiders have a nice droprate for Netherweb Silk, but aren't actually skinnable so you can skip them).
I just ran it now and got a little over 60 pieces, and for any tank class it's not hard at all. (My Feral gear is full of greens and I zoom through it) Could probably do it as a non tank class too, considering it's a level 70 instance.
As of 4.1.0, by far the best possible place I could find to farm this was Razorthorn Ridge in Terrokar Forrest at (55, 14). There are 8 groups of 3 ravagers up almost 100% of the time. Starting at the first group, and working through them all, when I'm done with the eighth I go back to the first and start all over again. No downtime to speak of. Only two real complaints and those are;
There are some Flayers that run around constantly, but they do so little damage, it doesn't even bother me.
The ravagers themselves have a small stun, not enough to get you killed, but enough to make you terribly upset.
Keep in mind these mobs are all level 70, and on my level 70 druid twink, I was able to farm a little under 300 Knothide Leather in an hour, plus 3 stacks of scraps.
Overall, the best place I've been to just farm Knothide Leather for.
Not too long after posting this, while I was continuing to farm these little buggers, I actually noticed there were even more ravagers on the same level as these guys, so I believe that there are somewhere around ~40 ravagers that each drop 1-3 knothide leather, and as stated before, if you cycle through them you'll always have something to kill.
Obviously you'd go through them quicker on an 85, but this remains to be my go-to spot for Knothide Leather.
Running the Black Morass event also gives a fair amount of leather. All the elite dragonkin are skinnable and generally skin into 2-4 knothide leather. It's pretty easy and fast on regular.
Thank you mate, very good spot..
Is it not possible any more to get more than one Leather by Skinning 1 Mob?
I found a good place to farm knothide is the felfire diemetradons around the large lava pool in the magma fields of shadowmoon valley. just keep running around the pool killing them, and when you get back to the starting point they have all re-spawned.
On my 85 feral druid, I believe the area between Garadar and Ring of trials in Nagrand was perfect. So many clefthoof, talbuk, and elekk and they respawn fairly quickly. Wont take long to get a good bit. :]
Let me just share my recent experience with you all...hope it helps.
If you are a hunter...go to Black Morass and mount up, then proceed to aggro at least one crock and one panther. Then ride your mount all over the instance and aggro every single one of those bad boys. Once you have them all, group them tight by running a circle around them and then run one direction drop a frost trap, turn and Multi Shot (may take 2 or 3)...then spend the next two minutes looting what was upwards of 200 knothide...
I would say that if you have an 85, Eco-dome midrealm in outland, netherstorm, is the best place. Just kill lynx and crocos, and before you have cleared the area, they will respawn. I got around 100 pr 10 minute, because they drop from 1-4 everytime, and if not, they drop around 3 scraps. Even though i play at a high population server, there aint many farming or lvling up there.
Another good place are the diemetrons in shadowmoon, those near black temple ^^
Netherwing ledge is a good place to get knothide leather ,there is a cave to the north is with a lot of Nethermine flayers
The two best places I have found for skinning Knothide Leather and lots of it in the most efficient and fastest way is in:
Eco-dome Midrealm, Netherstorm; killing and skinning the cats and crocs in there (for me it was 100% drop)
And in Nagrand just north of the Mag'har village along the lake; killing and skinning Talbuks. They are along the water and around all the large trees there, making a circuit along the lake and back down along the trees and back up along the lake is probably the most efficient of all. You can kill them incredibly fast, they're "neutral" mobs so you can enjoy being around a lot of them without them swarming you (if you're lower level) and by the time you make a full circuit they will have all respawned so you can infinitely farm. For me it was 100% drop rate of leather, never a single scrap.
On my server (hyjal) the AH is selling them for 85-100 gold per stack (I know thats really messed up, but whatever) so after you've farmed the 500 or so you need to get to the next level of leatherworking you can keep farming to pad your pockets. r roll in the riches, in my case. (They actually sell for that price, not just listed as a joke)
Happy hunting :D
on your steed.
May your hunting go well!
I'm currently killing Talbuk Throngrazers in Skysong Lake in Nagrand, just around the lake, there's loads of Talbuk Throngrazers to kill. Pretty good and quick skinning if your the only one around there..
Not to be negitive or anything but. comments like these are the reason i stopped going to thottbot.
"If your max lvl and want easy farming this is what you do .. .bla bla bla"
Well what if your not max lvl and actually leveling your prof at the right level?
I supose my lvl 61 is off to kill some hellboars.... or maby buzzerds.
Bach'lor and the Talbuks is excellent for farming Knothide leather, only thing i found on this page that was missing was the actual spawn point of him and his mob, i found that if i stood at the co'ordinates 26,52 that he pretty much spawns directly in front of you every few minutes. Hope this helps!
A nice farming place would be Karazhan. 3 runs of skinning the bats/fel hounds and this is what I've got :
The amount gained will depend on the guild perk
Shadow Dagger of the Elder
Shattered Hand Legplates of the Gorilla
Sundered Spaulders of Frost Protection
Dragonhawk Bands of the Bandit
Hope this helps.
Head to the Eco-dome in Netherstorm. Between the lynx and crocs they always drop knothide leather. 150 drops, all knothide, no scraps. lotsa good places to farm these days.
Black Morass. End of story. Mount up, ride around the zone, aggroing all the mobs... they will follow you and never leash. Once you have them all, dismount and AOE them down (FoK on my rogue was perfect for this.) 15 minutes tops - mostly for looting / skinning - gets you 5 full stacks if you have Bountiful Bags guild perk.
Sables are a little hard to see but you can grab 'em. Crocs are a cinch. Avoid spiders for extra fun (I made a game out of seeing how much I could pull without getting spiders).
Good luck and happy skinning!
For those of you who are looking for a comment that's actually within the cataclysm expansion, I farmed raptors and worgs around the daggermaw ogres in Blade's Edge Mts. Just start around 67, 23 near gruul's lair and work your way down the strip until about 45,52 near bladespire hold. The raptors and wolves in this area have 100% Knothide leather drop rate. I don't think I got one piece of knothide leather scraps until I killed a Bloodmaul dire wolf around 45,66. Keep going back and forth, up and down the area killing wolves and raptors and you'll build up a decent amount of knothide leather in no time.
Best place to farm these is not in Nagrand, but in Blade's Edge near Sylvanar (the cats & flying drakes).
The best Place FULL STOP, for knothide leather is a place many people would not think of trying.
If you go into the instance black moras on normal, and hop on your mount you can round up as many animals in the instance you want. They will not reset and they will keep following you as long as you dont exit the instance, die or etc.
Just aoe the whole bunch once they've been rounded up and you'll get a HEAP of knothide leather. On a side note: You also get a lot of web from the spiders which is kind of useful.
Farming Knothide lether here is the best and easiest. Just run around in the water and collect a load of CROCS, then kill and skin. If you are a Hunter, keep you pet on passive so he does not kill everything and rob you of loot and skins. I found this to be the best and fastest place to farm the Knothide Leather
And skin pretty much everything there, just saying!
About 3-4 different types of creatures and all of them have above 80% droprate.
(But don't tell anybody, this is my secret place)
List of creatures to be found:
If you wish to farm this leather...
The Black Morass. The Black Morass. The Black Morass.
I tried Nagrand, Shadowmoon Valley, and Blade's Edge Mountains before I went to the Black Morass, and I would have saved myself a lot of time if I'd simply gone there first. Just ride around and round up the crocs and cats, AOE kill, AOE loot (woohoo!), and skin, skin, skin.
Karazhan is the place to do it
at 85 it takes two pulls on a semi-geared hunter
I'm sure a 90 would have an easy easy time farming this now
/watch?v=lT1SE-Vf0Rg on youtube for proof
Here in a link for a video that shows the ABSOLUTE BEST spot to farm knothide leather. The video is from oct 2012 so everything is it is still working in MoP. Good luck : )
Namilea has been a huge help to me! I suggest using her guide! Thanks again!
Best place for Knothide Leather? Black Morass.
Get in, mount up, pull all the trash mobs, but don't do the bosses..
One run in there with all (more or less, panthers are stealthed so ytou might miss a few) yielded me 86 Knothide Leather, and probably took 5-10 mins.. Didn't take time, but darn there was a lot of mobs to skin xD
I've created a farming path designed in order to farm Knothide Leather the most efficiently from the Instance 'The Black Morass'. The path was put together after analysing the position of all the Darkwater Crocolisks to pull every croc in the map in the fast way possible, minimizing scrambling all over the map wasting time.

Ok, I won't take full credit for this idea but I had done it in the past. The guys at #$%^&*!@#$%^&*!@#$% suggest the basement in Kara and I can say that this is BY FAR the best place to farm leather if you are 80+. With each run taking approximately 7 minutes with gathering, killing, looting and skinning I topped out my 5 instances per hour in just over a half hour.
257 knothide leather
40 knothide leather scraps
a dozen greens
and 62 gold in grey items.
Here is the easiest way I found to farm this area. I did this on a level 90 WW monk in so so gear. Walk into Kara, remember you no longer have to be in a raid group to enter. Turn right as soon as you walk in and go past the spiders, remember you cannot skin the spiders so you are wasting time by killing them. Gather up as many of the bats and plague hounds as you can. AOE down and loot. Double check to make sure you did not miss any, there are two side rooms that have mobs in them so take the time to check, you will always have down time waiting for the instance counter to reset. Once you have looted, go back out front and reset the instance. There is a vendor outside if you dont have a vendor mount so sell off the grey items in between runs. It is extremely important not to kill any bosses because you can no longer reset the instance if you do so. If you find that you are hitting the 5 instance per hour cap you can go up and kill some of the mobs that are not linked to bosses for cloth/green drops. The gold drops in raids was drastically reduced a while back so you are not farming gold but you can farm mats and greens while you wait. If you can clear trash and skin for 10-15 minutes before resets you can easily farm this for hours on end.
Hope this helps.
Daily rep grinders and Leatherworkers ahoy!
While not the fastest, the
daily quest for the Netherwing Faction in Shadowmoon Valley is quite profitable. The quest requires you to collect 35 Nethermine Flayer hides (which has a pretty low droprate) by skinning Nethermine Flayers. Each of the Flayers drops about 1-3 Knothide Leathers and a TON of scraps on average.
Definitely best farming place I've found is The Black Morass / Opening of the Black Portal, 68+ instance.
There is a lot of crocolisks and jaguars to skin. Since it's instance you can pull lots of mobs when mounted up and they wont reset and run back to their spots.
I been levelling skinning and leatherworking for lvl 70 brewmaster monk.
I cleared the instance with 4-6 pulls. Really easy and fast!
I gurantee you won't be disappointed! ^_^'
(You get around 100-120 Knothide leather per run and no scraps!)
Black Morass is great, no competition, no scraps and mobs won't reset. Bonus is they don't drop a lot of random gray stuff, it is mostly fangs and claws that stack well if you can't vendor easily with an occasional green item. Only downside is you may get dismounted, it happened to me once, it just makes it a little harder to round them into one big group easily.
As a level 73 hunter I get the Chrono Beacon off Sa'at at the entrance, then pull a ton of guys and use the beacon, blow CDs, trap and multishot to dps them dead quick. Devilsaur or the beacon dragon seems to hold aggro, I disengage with web talent to keep them together. Then I clean up whats left inside, reset and go again.
I found that, for trying to farm with an on-level character (high 60s to low 70s), the
s just northeast of Eclipse Point are very good. In my experience, they dropped
at least one
Knothide Leather on every kill, and respawned just about quickly enough for my 68 Rogue to make a continuous circuit (with very quick kills, usually two shots counting Ambush with Cloak and Dagger). The Thorngrazers in Nagrand, on the other hand, noticeably dropped scraps as well, despite the fact that Wowhead says they both have ~86% to drop leather ~14% to drop scraps.
Karazhan still works great. Bats and hounds are all close to each other and takes about 5-10 mins per run (including skinning) and as long as you dont kill bosses you can reset 5 times per hour.
Here is a map of the area. Its near the entrance past the spiders.
I averaged 70-100 Knothide leathers per run.
if your high level go to the Black Morass in Caverns of Time , there are too many crocks to count and when the rifts open if you kill the rift lords they drop 2-3 each of these, there are 18 rifts , your own private instance , no competition , leave - reset , I timed a run at 12 minutes that way you'll never exceed the lock-out timer, in 12 minutes i had 81 leathers and 3 greens , happy farming!
For farming this easily there is a good spot in Eco-Dome Farfield, Netherstorm. The
there have a good respawn rate. In a north-northeast arc of the dome starting at approximately (43,13) and ending at approximately (47,13) all within the dome there is an ample supply of mobs lvls 68-69 with a single rare 71 elite (
, a quest mob for the
questline) that pats through the area.
When you get to the end of the arc just mount up and quickly fly back over to the start again, you'll find the mobs have respawned by the time you're done skinning everything across the arc.
Easy as pie for an heirloomed 67 BM hunter.
I would like to confirm that the Servant's Quarter, in Karazhan, is a great farming place for Knothide Leather. You will need to go outside and reset the raid in order to properly farm it (I'm guessing this won't work if you already have a save). As a druid 90, I just grabbed all the animals and killed them with two or three AoEs.
Did this for 30 minutes and this was my loot:
Knothide Leather x323
Knothide Leather Scraps x124
Fel Hide x23
Netherweb Spider Silk x50
Green armor x17
Blue armor x1
Blue pattern x1
Tons of grey items
Epic armor from the animal bosses (1 per run)
Also notice that there is a vendor placed right at the door, so everytime you reset, you can sell all the junk.
I find that the Felboar in Shadowmoon Valley is rather good for Knothide Leather. I can't exactly give any estimates on the drops, but I was running through Outland on my L62 rouge, and I had seen them. I was curious if I could kill a level 68 at that level (I could) so I went and killed it, not exactly knowing if it was skinnable. It was ( :D ) but since my leatherworking was so behind, it did me no good ( D: ). I however kept running around killing and skinning them, and the majority of the drops were either the scraps or the leather. Thought I might just pop in and give my thoughts. :)
I tried Servant's Quarter, in Karazhan, today as an iLvl 299, lvl 85 Survival Hunter.
I did 3 runs of only the Servant's Quarter, killing the bats and hounds. The only spiders I killed were those closest to the doors. Here's my
after 3 runs:
Time : 7 minutes (would be significantly lower with a higher level/better geared toon)
Money: 12g 50s 0c (vendored all gray items at the mage outside of Kara's entrance)
Knothide Leather Scraps
Netherweb Spider Silk
5 green items
I also picked up 1 purple item,
Shadikith the Glider
and 1 blue item from the 3 runs.
Just as other's have said, do NOT kill any bosses so you can reset the instance. I was farming
on the mountain in Terokkar Forest before. Kara is definitely better, in my experience, than Terokkar. I plan to try The Black Morass in a few days, since it's suggested as much as Kara. I'll update/post the results when I do.
This is an
of 3 runs,
the total from 3 runs. You can expect to get somewhere around these numbers for
At this point I believe Kara has been nerfed so that it can't be efficiently farmed for leather anymore. Large groups of mobs despawned as I was skinning. Two runs netted 33 leathers and 28 scraps.
Kara didn't used to drop scraps, or if it did it was maybe one scrap/run. I don't remember ever seeing it in my bags after farming sessions in the past.
I originally went there to kill the horse boss for mount and decided to farm leather for four runs and the boss on the fifth. After the low drop rate (down from the 15 stacks I'm used to walking away with) I went ahead and killed boss and hearthed out.
Next week I'll see if pulling one room at a time fixes the mass despawning issue, but even if it does I still won't farm it anymore due to inefficient numbers of scraps that drop.
I'm not sure what happened with Sesh's run in the previous comment, but
is a really great source of knothide. As a comparison, I did one pass of
, clearing everything, and got 58 knothide leather. It was quite time-consuming, as each
only dropped 1 leather and I had to ride around the entire area twice to grab everything. One problem, in particular, with
is that at level 100, it is very hard to get the
s to aggro to you. You literally have to run through every single one, and the stealthed
s can't be grabbed unless you accidentally run directly through them.
, on the other hand, was short and plentiful. Most of the creatures (bats and dogs) dropped between 2 and 3 knothide each. Grabbing everything in the couple of rooms took literally 2 minutes. This netted 71 knothide. So there's no comparison. I went off exploring Kara and came back to find many of the bats and dogs had respawned. Without resetting the instance, I had 132 knothide leather. After a 3rd pass, no reset possible (because I had killed some bosses), I had 192 knothide. That
averages to about 64 knothide per pass
I did not have the despawning issue that Sesh mentioned, however, I do make sure my pet is on passive (preferably dismissed) when I farm for leather. I have noticed some despawning when it isn't.
Not only is
good for knothide, you get the added benefit of gold and transmog drops. The crocs in Black Morass didn't drop anything interesting (or at all).
Note: This comment is based on being level 100 and having 700 skinning.
Holy guacamole, happened upon the rock flayers up on the Netherwing Ledge. The spawn rate is insane fast and mostly level 71 with a couple of easy elites. You can grab a bunch and AoE them in an instant. They also peel off nethermine hides, a few crystal infused hides, and occasionally scraps.
I found a nice little place next to Shadowmoon village in Shadowmoon Valley. There is a small magma pond / lake next to it in the Magma fields where Felboar, Felfire Diemetradon, and the occasional Vilewing Chimeara that may fly over, that when skinned gives me the wanted Knothide leather, and the best part is that by the time I go around the lake once, everything I just killed has respawned and is ready for another quick round. Also, the creatures aren't long distances away, they keep close enough to keep you going. Hope it helps, Happy Hunting !
As an added note: Do not fall into the magma lake! If you are being attacked for instance, you will not be able to transform into flight, mount up norswim out. There are very few if any places to actually climb out for that matter also, and the magma "WILL" Kill you! So be careful! : p
Karazhan. Servant's quarters. Gather all bats & hounds together, and AoE them down. Reset instance. Repeat.
That's all you need to know.
A lot of the comments talk about running Karazhan or Black Morass instances. These are only good if you're in a group or a high level.
For those who are around 65 to 68, I found that the Tabulk Thorngrazers of Nagrand in the area northwest of Skysong Lake drops Knothide Leather and scraps (has been changed as they used to drop leather only). I work between the Throne of Elements and Garadar, along the shore of the Lake and in from the shore too.
They are around level 65 or 66 and don't aggro. Beware of the stone elementals on the mountains and the occasional wind elemental traveling through the area.
There are also Clefthoof Bulls (who aggro) and a Wild Elekk (not aggro & drops Pair of Ivory Tusks for Consortium rep) nearby too.
If you are Horde, you have the nearby village of Garadar to unload the junk and repair.
Karazhan runs: 10 runs
Knothide leather scraps: 240
Knothide leather: 609
Fel Hide: 22
Gold in trash loot: 109g
15 various green items (one boneshredder worth 1k on my realm)
Good place for knothide leather.
Skinning Knothide Leather And Knothide Leather Scaps In Nagrand Outland
youtu.be/aDy2d4eDDfY really useful guide on the best spot.
There's two good places I have found to farm up some Knothide Leather. This leather is used to get from BC up to WOTLK content, and the Borean Leather crafting which comes next.
instance in the
Caverns of Time
To get there you need to travel to the southern end of Tanaris and go inside the cavern there. The instance you want is surrounded by swampy looking trees (there's about four or five instances all in the same hub area).
Once in the instance, you can ride around and aggro the crocodiles and panthers, kill them all, skin them then repeat the process.
Some guy is standing there waiting to start an event, just avoid him. I think it's Medivh, actually.
After you have run out of crocs and whatnot, leave the instance, reset it and repeat as required.
As you enter the instance take a right and go to the spider, bat and dire wolf infested catacombs underneath the main instance. The spiders, while not skinnable, drop Netherweb Spider Silk quite often, and that's good for tailors. The bats and hounds will skin for 1-5 Knothide Leathers each. Once you have cleared out the majority of the catacombs, you might get a bat, spider or hound boss appear. They'll drop a Blue BOP item once deaded.
In order for this stuff to work you need to have decent skinning skills - 350+ or whatever the mark is to get Knothide Leather.
As for me, I highly recommend the Opening of the Dark Portal dungeon in caverns of time; all the mobs drop Knothide leather, and since it's a dungeon, they can be rounded up easily and quickly.
One note to consider: the time it takes for corpses to despawn seems to have been changed; I suggest rounding up no more than five or ten at a time until you're comfortable with the despawn timer to avoid loss of leather.
I was herb hunting in Zangarmarsh when I came across some Steam Pump Flotsam floating in the water. Naturally I quickly started fishing to hopefully find some neat stuff. Well the last item I pulled up was "Curious Crate". When I opened the crate, I received one Knothide Leather.
My results from 10 Karazhan cellar runs:
Knothide lether: 469
Knothide leather scraps:247
Fel hide: 22
Took about 35 minutes.
These results are a lot lower than reports from previous expansions. I believe this is because of the dynamic level range Blizzard introduced with BfA. Karazhan mobs are lvl ~70, which no longer counts as "max level" for TBC enemies, since TBC is 60-80 now. This is also why you'll get worse skinning results in TBC 5-man heroics (which have lvl 70 enemies) than TBC 5-man normals (which have lvl 80 enemies).
Even so, this is probably the best spot you can find.
Update: Having done some more skinning in this area, it seems to me like a 110 character will get much more knothide leather than a 120 character will. It sounds extremely weird, but my 120 skinner comes out with ~50 leather per run, while my 110 skinner comes out with ~100 leather per run.
38 Hunter. Outlands for the 1st time. Picked up skinning from Shat. Went to find some flight-points and going thru Zangarmarsh (Almost all of it). Starting around /way 39.27, 63.04 Seems like a great place for a new skinner as it is close to Shat for trainers. (max level for NPC's out here seem to end at lvl 30.
I was able to farm some Crystal Infused leather and 148 Knothide Leather from Sporebats, Greater Sporebats, Marsh Rippers, Ironspire Threshalisk. In a little over an hour. Got my skinning up to max and collected a bunch of , , and .
I really like Blades Edge starting around /way 30.65, 73.18. for the fast re-spawn and the chance to skin the Wrath Hounds around /way 32.71, 45.59. Just start at one end and when the re-spawn slows down work your way back to the hounds.
*A different post for lower levels. lvl 30 hunter. 1st time in Outlands. Went out the back gate of Shat to do the fishing daily. Found the Dampscale Basalisk are pretty easy to kill at my level and also drop Knothide leather one piece per skinning or scraps. Still levels up your skinning pretty fast and close enough to run away for repairs in the city.
