This is most likely a tribute/joke to the guy who sold "pet rocks" back in the 70ties and earned quite a lot from it.

Seemingly the idea works quite well, because people tend to buy these for 2-7g :)

And indeed it gives me a great laugh when I see them posted in trade, for it reminds me of a Family Guy episode :)

When I say this, I say this for a fact: the pet rock is not very hard to please; It's basically happy 100% of the time. So no worries on who gets to pick the movie, it'll always let you choose! :)

All that I got from them during that time:

I bought my pet rock for 3g and I think it was worth it and now everyone wants to buy my pet rock... I think you should farm it then sell it for +5g.

If you get a pet rock they are worth up to 50g on RP servers... I got one for 3g then sold it for 45g! Its really worth the buy... Plus you get to have a buddy with you to talk with on a really long trip...

I love this item :D i got one, and linked it on trade channel for fun and it caused a lot of laugh!! after that one guy offered me 25 g for it and i sold it to him!! i went to azshara and got 5 more in 10 minutes, i sold them all for 25g each ! i don't know why do ppl buy it, I suppose that they are some kind of collectors of strange and rare WoW stuff :D

Sadly, these don't stack with theirstelvs.
Thus, you can't have a monolog with a bunch of pet rocks without wasting more than one inventory slot.

He suggested I call it Einstein.
And so I did.

Now, each time I link Einstein on the trade channel, I get half a dozen whispers who say:

I dont know how my pet rock did this but somehow it tanked Zul'Aman. I am going to keep this FOREVER. Never need to look for a tank again when i got one in my backpack :D

This may be a Runescape reference. In the Fremennik Isles quest you have to obtain some golden fleece, which is guarded by a giant troll. You can get a Pet Rock (http://www.runehq.com/database.php?type=item&id=001449) from Askeladden (http://www.runehq.com/database.php?type=person&id=278) which you give to the Troll. He thinks it is the perfect companion- It doesn't complain, doesn't need to be cleaned up after, and doesn't eat- so he gives you some golden fleece in exchange. You can also obtain more Pet Rocks after the quest and they can be Interacted with- Feed, Stroke, Talk to, and Interact. It's a fun and popular pet.

Had another ticket open due to a game bug. This time I got to talk to the gm, and when he asked the obligatory "Is there anything else I can do for you today?" I asked "I was hoping to farm another pet rock, since the Timbermaw Shamans are gone, do they still exist somewhere?"

After about 3 minutes of looking it up, he sadly replied that they no longer are available anywhere in game. He was even sad cause he now wants one too! So every ticket I open and every forum posting I do on the battle.net site will end in "Bring back the Pet Rocks!" Rawr

MOP is rumored to have a daily that will have a Pet Rock as a random reward. Supposedly like the fishing bag has a Very Unlucky Rock. Hopefully this is true... I guess we'll just have to hope it survives launch.

Still no sighting. There is a Tasty Rock you can pick pocket from MoP mobs. I have tried to farm one with no luck. Will hopefully be motivated to try again before they take IT away too... /mournpetrock

Timbermaw Shamans, the mobs in Azshara who used to drop this item(by being pickpocketed) have been removed from the game this patch.
Pet Rocks are no longer available. QQ =(

As of the Legion pre-patch today, you can use this item to actually summon your pet rock. (5 min cooldown)

Also, it will likely be obtainable again in Legion through the Never Ending Toy Chest.

It still looks happy.
