Anathema is the counter-part of the priest staff Benediction (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18608
). Anathema is a great staff not only because it looks cool, but because you can switch between Benediction to increase your healing abilities or Anathema to increase your Shadow Damage abilities. Although Shadowpriests call this item the "Noob staff" and Holy/Disc priests call it the "Insta PvP Death staff", it is a great staff and never should be underestimated.
To create the Anathema/Benediction, you must aquire these items first:
Eye of Shadow:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18665
This item can be farmed off any Elite Demons (including Kazzak who drops it almost all the time) or bought off in the AH.
Eye of Divinity:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18646
This can be taken from Major Domo from Molten Core, he has a 50% chance to drop it (or take it from his chest).
After you equip both eyes, head to this link for more information.

Being a shadow priest, I love this staff. 69 to Shadow combined with 20 Shadow to gloves as well as other +Damage gear can wreak some havok. I have had Vampiric Embrace ticks for 100+ when using mindflay. In a raid I was placed in a caster DPS grp and with VE and VT kept their health and mana almost full. This staff is a huge buff imho.

I would suggest a +20 spirit enchant to the staff for two reasons.
1.) +20 Spirit enchant is a relativly cheap enchant
2.) The added spirit is very useful with the talent Spirit tap
The combination of spirit, mana per 5, and +damage is very important. I find that this enchant balances the staff very well.

This weapon is obviously priest only, and can be obtained through a quest line beginning with the Eye of Divinity found in Majordomo's chest after defeating him in the Molten Core. When you complete the quest, you will recieve Benediction. When you use Benediction by right-clicking it, you can turn it into this staff which suits a shadow priest very well and looks very cool. Benediction is the healing version of the staff.

As a shadow priest that sometimes needs to heal (e.g. DPS on trash mobs, heal on bosses), I find it useful to bring another weapon for healing on raids, because of the 30 minute cooldown.

There's some interesting trivia behind the word Anathema if anyone is interested. In Greek Biblical scriptures, it meant something that was offered up to God, but through has come to mean something set apart from God. Sometimes, even accursed.

By and far one of the best staffs in vanilla WoW. I still have it in my Priest's bank.
What makes it special is not so much the fact that it was hands down amazing looking, but the fact that it required almost full MC clears, luck of the draw (Damn you Hunters and your Leaf) and farming the other eye to fuse them together and do a not too easy quest.
This was a different game when you really did feel like you earned things.

before it was watered down by less leveling time,
A lot of the changes BC and Wrath made to the game were a fix for things that were designed badly from the start. Questing STILL takes too long (it's a second job you have to pay for, and you're NOT playing the game until you hit the level cap anyway; believe me, questing taking many hours is NOT a point in the game's favor), any cooldown longer than 15 minutes is retarded (hence why the hearthstone cooldown reduction was so welcome), durability damage on death still needs to go and mobs need to stop cheating (knockback charge from MELEE range anyone?).
And no, that's not me "whining to make the game easier"; it's fully possible to put some valid challenge into the game while simultaneously minimizing unnecessary annoyances.
Why don't flight paths just instantly teleport us to the destination? The advent of flying mounts completely killed off automated flight paths that take inefficient routes over "pretty scenery" we've seen 100 times and got bored of 10 minutes before the first.
Why can't ghosts fly? Don't tell me you've never released your spirit to find your corpse conveniently on the other side of a MOUNTAIN that extends north and south for almost the entire zone... and dear god, I'm resurfacing memories of Ashenvale already... Oh, but long ass inconvenient graveyard runs "enhance your playing experience", amirite? Well they don't enhance mine, and I pay just as much as you. More, in fact, as I live in the Land of the Price Markups (Australia).
Why does resurrection sickness NOT tick down while logged out, when it used to? Was it a little bit overpowered that we could actually play a different character for the duration, so they felt the need to FORCE us to sit for 10 completely ineffectual minutes doing NOTHING? Think about that; the only way to proceed is to willfully waste 10 minutes of paid time while we can't actually play the game. And that leads on to another point...
Why isn't our paid time rigged up so it ticks away as we actually use it? Paying for access to the servers that expires at a set time only lets us use 2/3 of it -- and that's if we spend every waking hour playing the game which we most certainly will NOT.
And the part about how mounts are cheaper than they used to be? Get over it, they're perfect the way they are and simply cost TOO MUCH (given how slow travel times are in this game) back in your precious Classic. What you're doing is called Old People Syndrome (it isn't, but you get the idea) and it's a counterproductive trait when you consider that humans are an adaptive creature.
(Oh yeah, and I didn't play in Classic; not that it affects the validity of my point)
However, I'm not entirely against you. I too would like to see epic class specific quests make a return.

Regarding enchants and curiosity, I placed a
Enchant Staff - Greater Spellpower
enchant on Anathema. The blue sparks and flares characteristic of this enchant did
not
show. The same goes for the
Benediction
version. (I also confirm that the enchant remains, regardless of which version of the staff you have. It will not be removed upon swapping.)
I would say it's safe to assume enchant glows would be overwritten by the staff's default glow.

According to this page, Anathema is not available, but as of July the 10th 2010, I equipped Benediction and turned it into Anathema. (Just so no one feeling nostalgic like I did misses out on this great staff.)
I'm guessing it some sort of bug on the website related to how the Benediction/Anathema spells work.

(Oh yeah, and I didn't play in Classic; not that it affects the validity of my point)
Actually, it does.
You're playing a Massive, Multiplayer Online game. You're not playing a canned console game with a set amount of available content. This game is supposed to take up your time.
You claim he's suffering from a syndrome, when in fact you're suffering from the "GIMMEGIMME" syndrome. You want it fast, and you want it with little to no cost to you.
There should be risk involved with any rewards in any game, and Blizzard has severely watered that ratio down.
Why do we have durability? So people don't have millions of gold and inflate the economy (too late). Its called a money sink, and the game needs far more of 'em, and less payouts on dailies/mobs. The guild level perk that reduced durability from deaths was a rotten idea.
Flight paths exist for lowbies who don't have mounts yet, for the lazy or busy who can't sit at the keyboard and fly their toon somewhere.
Why do we have long grind times to end game? So that people can learn how to properly play their class/specs. They're given quests of various types and difficulties, over and over and over, until they reach end game.. in the hopes that by the time they hit 60, 70, 80, 85 that they'll have a sufficient grasp of game mechanics to be a asset to their guild/friends.
From the looks of things, maybe Blizz needs to increase the difficulty of quests, and the XP it takes to reach 85.

I could not agree with you more. I've been playing World of Warcraft since practically its inception. If you never played in Vanilla it is very unwise to try and talk about the current WoW and the old WoW, it is like comparing generations, it cannot be done.
For starters Classic WoW has a much more significant level disparity. By that I mean that from levels 1-60 a whole lot changes. Every expansion that has extended the longevity of this game has only tacked on 10 levels at the most. The importance of this is that if you were trying to hit 70 or 80 or even 85 you weren't really having to make a significant effort to hit the level cap again. If you were re-rolling you'd find that the grind from 1-60 was way harder and more grueling than going from 60-70,80 or 85. Heirlooms have aided in this. Blizzard now has made the game easier for the people that are already on top. I wont lie it is a nice perk for 85s that are already doing end game content that want alts. The only issue is it takes the whole appreciation for the game. Like awesomepossum said players have the "GIMMIEGIMMIE" syndrome. You want things fast and when they do not happen to your likings you get on the forums and complain.
Arbron's contention about the res sickness not wearing off while logged off I'll agree with as being stupid. However repair bills are necessary, otherwise there is inflation, and thats one more thing you can complain about.
As to whether it is important that you played Vanilla like I said earlier it's extremely significant. Think logically here:
1.) You used to have to coordinate schedules with 39 other people (40 including yourself). Now at max you need to coordinate with a little more than half that amount. The difficulty right there is still unfathomable as to how I was able to down Rag, Ony, Nef, and C'Thun ALL when they were the LIVE content patches.
2.) There used to be one mode. There was no hard mode or easy mode. I am a fan hardmodes, but it gives players a cop out. I think that if you set your raid to hardmode, you shouldn't be able to switch it back and forth for various fights, either you can handle it or not. That's how it used to be and I don't understand why they did away with it.
3.) Soloing a high level elite meant you were pretty pro. Now everybody and there brother can solo anything.
4.) Gone are the days of World PvP. The world is bigger now which means less likelihood of being ganked.
5.) No more World Dragon Bosses that you had to compete with everyone for.
6.) Mounts are WAY to cheap now. It used to be somewhat of a big deal when you hit level 40 and you got your mount. You used to have to saved up for that mount. Now by the time I level an alt to level 20 I have a surplus of gold.
7.) This is a question and an answer. Q: If Vanilla content wasn't so difficult why is it that they have phased it out?
A: They phased it out because the game has become much more easier to play which means old content is a joke. Take for example last content patch of BWD, BoT, and To4W. The HM item lvl gear is 372. The starting item level for regular FL is 378. I've seen peoples alts get carried through FL runs. There used to be no such thing as getting carried, you either held your weight or lost your spot to someone more competent. Tanks have close to 200k HP. Fully buffed in Vanilla Naxx 40 tanks didn't even reach 50k.
8.) Mechanics vs. Gear Checks. Boss fights today can be broken down into one of these two categories. Mechanical fights are somewhat self-explanitory, if you can adhere to the fight's mechanics while not dying step forward and collect your loot. Gear Checks are fights that test to see if your raid is geared enough for the encounter. Mainly DPS races with Berserk Enrages, that sort of stuff. In Vanilla it wasn't one or the other it was both, always.
9.) C'THUN! Need I say more. You could wipe the raid walking in the door with a lazer, call it a stupid mechanic, but it created one more level of difficulty that made the game more interesting. Half the mechanics of these new fights are facerolls. The Majordomo Staghelm encounter is as follows stack up > spread out > stack up > run out of the raid when your seed has 5 seconds > return to stack > spread out > stack up, kill him or if you don't have the DPS.... you guessed it > spread out...again, kill him, or > stack up.....again. The complexity of fights are limited to 1 to 2 repeatable phases.
10.) For better or for worse the game has changed and honestly we cannot do anything to stop Blizzard from whatever direction they choose to take with it. Certainly it has become noticeably easier, but people still choose to play the game and deal with the gimicks and oddities of the game because they're having fun. We can compare all we want, but it will make no difference.
11.) For good measure, it makes a difference whether you played during Vanilla or not Arbron. It is difficult to comment on something you never experienced for yourself, nor do you have a profound respect for. You're forming your opinions on what you currently experience and what you hear from others. For the record thats called hear say and in a court of law its not permitted as evidence, in case you wanted a real life example.
Classic and The Burning Crusade were the glory days of World of Warcraft. Hopefully the expansions of the future will bring back a level of difficulty that players do not experience today, but that is wishful thinking.

I have this beautiful staff on 3 of my 5 priests (don't ask).
The Eye of Divinity was loot gotten from the chest that spawned in Molten Core after defeating Majordomo Executus (50% chance, the other 50% chance was for the Hunter quest (for the epic bow and quiver). This is the Holy aspect of the staff.
The Eye of Shadow was loot gotten from any elite level 58+ Demon (including Lord Kazzak in the Blasted Lands before he got promoted in the Burning Crusade and now resides in Hellfire Peninsula, and the Demons that were guarding the Dark Portal before the Burning Crusade expansion event arrived). This is the Shadow aspect of the staff.
With those two aspects of your priesthood, you could go to the Plaguelands, at the cave near Stratholme, and accept a quest to test your healing and curing (diseases) skills as a priest. You needed to cast certain spells at the right moment, and it was pretty intense.
You could not get help *during* the quest, but you could get buffs from other players before accepting the quest. Like, Mark of the Wild, Arcane Intellect, or have a paladin in your group with Devotion or Retribution Aura to help you during the quest. However, you had to note that if you walked out of the paladin's range and back in to it, you'd regain the Aura buff and therefore fail the quest. So instead, people used to use a lot of immolation oil for it (to burn down skeletons that were attacking the dieing citizens (of Stratholme, see Culling of Stratholme's event for the details).
After proving your worth as a priest (seriously, all healers should take one like that at 85 if it existed). You'd get the Splinter of Nordrassil. This would be the symbol of the Discipline you showed to Balance Light and Shadow.
Using the Discipline part to bind Light and Shadow, you'd get Benediction ("healer" version). You could also change it to Anathema ("shadow" version).
This item holds many beautiful memories for me from the old days. Many more than any other item in the game.

The staff was created by obtaining the
神圣之眼
from
Majordomo Executus
in Molten Core.
It was then required to obtain the
暗影之眼
which dropped of most demons in the Blasted Lands and Winterspring.
They were then both equipped as trinkets in order to see the questgiver who otherwise did not appear, which's tale explains
that she had fallen to the dead with only her spirit remaining:
Eris Havenfire
located in
Eastern Plaguelands
.
The event did then revolve around helping peasants escape from the undead by healing and curing their diseases until
50 had been rescued, and would be failed if 15 were killed. But could as any other quest be redone if failed as many
times as you wished, with a long wait time of two hours. The peasants were easily killed if not dispelled and healed quickly,
making it one of the greatest challenges for a Priest at the level. Though at the end it was indeed able to be done as solo once the heirlooms in
Wrath of the Lich King arrived, still at the same appropriate level.
Finally once the challenge was complete, her spirit was free by saving the innocent ones and you were awarded the
诺达希尔碎片
which together with both trinkets created
祈福
.

The reason why this staff doesn't have any Critical rating on it (like Benediction) is because spell crit used to be seen as a highly inferior stat to Shadow Priests. In Vanilla, only one Shadow spell could crit, Mind Blast, and it had a threat modifier that caused the spell to generate extra amounts of threat upon cast like Searing Pain. Now with DoTs and channels being able to crit, spell crit is of course now useful to shadow priests.
The original itemization:
Anathema
Binds when picked up
Unique
Two-hand Staff

(59.3 damage per second)
+31 Intellect
+22 Stamina

I asked this person if they have ever done a race change for their priest and he or she said "no."
I made a ticket reporting the player and a GM responded with an unreasonable excuse for the player. I don't remember what they had said.
Another interesting thing about this priest is that they were decked out in full heroic armor.
The player could have been a GM. I told them "If you don't tell me how you got the staff then I will report you." The player stopped responding to me.
