This item was accidentally (or some believe purposely) given to a player on Vek'nilash-US. The player’s account was hacked. Months later Blizzard decided to send him several items after restoring his account and low and behold on his lvl 13 warlock one Martin Fury was in his in-game mail box.
The player gave it to Karatechop who, using his best judgment, decided to use the item during an 10 Ulduar run. It was also used on Maly, 25man OS, and 25man Ulduar. All told Karatechop used it 14 times. Ultimately his account as well as several other accounts we banned.
Edited by TheOnyx: The real moral is that you should never try to exploit the game, even if you are accidentally given the tools to do so from a GM. If you get an item like this, tell a GM. :)

The reason they were unable to get to Algalon is because when you kill the keepers, they actually only go to 1 HP. If you use Martin Fury to destroy all mobs in 30 yards, then the keepers are unable to create the chest and therefore are unable to give you the key for Algalon.

The way I look at it, why does Blizzard have the right to ban the players accounts? Because they are smart? Because they take advantage of a situation? Virtually anyone that has an IQ would use this to its full potential, if given the circumstances. To bluntly put the story, its like the police coming to your house, dropping off a boatload of cash, then arresting you for spending it.

Also this is not an exploit
exploit
Verb
1. to take advantage of a person or situation for one's own ends
2. to make the best use of
3. work excessively hard
using some of those definitions you could easily call any WoW player an exploiter

Did anybody told you, that the GM did not get any problems?
Nearly everybody here is saying "the GM should get the problems, and not the player".
But nobody knows, if the GM got fired or soemthing like that. We all only know the player's version.
IMO he was rightfully banned - He got an item he was not intended to have - and he should know, that Blizz would NEVER give any player SUCH an advantage with an instant kill.
What was the matter in opening a petition and asking "hey, dude, is that right?" - Of course, normally you won't do that - but with such an item, it should have been a good Idea.
Just my 2 cents

Way to overeact by blizzard, they made the mistake, they should take the blame. Players have tried to exploit the game since day 1, thats the whole concept of twinking(as one exaple).
And offcourse no GM will be punished for anything, its his job and this is a small mistake, no biggie. IF any GM were to be punished it should have been the guy who banned the accounts, thereby loosing blizzard money...

Honestly, I don't believe that Karatechop should have been banned for such a reason. Although he used an exploit of the game, it wasn't his fault for having the item.
I'm 90% sure that half the players on the game would not have told a GM that they had such an item. I'm also 90% sure that at least 1/4th of the players on World of Warcraft would have used the item. I know I would have used it. Although I wouldn't have used it for the use of World Firsts/Server Firsts, and achievements.
I do believe that Blizzard removed 'Martin Thunder' from their Database(although I could be wrong). So to fix the problem from happening again, remove 'Martin Fury' from the Database as well.

Just like to point out the ToS actually mentions similar situations.
To paraphrase:
Cheating is
bad
. Using an item to cheat is
bad
. Regardless of how said item was obtained, use of said item is
bad
.
Bad
people will be banned.
If you read the ToS at all, you would know Blizzard was at no fault for what they did.
And I'm sure you all read the ToS. :)

"*The real moral is that you shouldn't ever tell anyone you have a massive exploit like this.*
There, fixed it for you. :D"
It wasn't them telling others that got them caught. It was the the numbers for there achievements and the statistics of there damage done that was a dead give away.
http://www.wow.com/2009/04/29/player-receives-developer-item-in-the-mail-one-shots-ulduar/
353,892,967 damage done in 1 hit. Find out what boss has exactly that much hp..... and what achievment you'd get for it.
In addition to other comments. It's more likely this was set up internally anyways, of course not from a GM becuase most/all don't have that power. Whoever they where in league with must of been on the a special team designed for restoring hacked accounts and such (Like said after anytime you ask a GM for your PVP item refund (after using it for a few days) before they made the refund mechanic). So even if it was blizzards fualt that this item landed in a players hand. And even IF any player would totally give that bad boy a spin through Stormwind or Ironforge a few times (FOR THE HORDE). They probably all got banned for being part of a huge scheme to cheat at the game.
Cheaters.

It's both Blizzard's fault and the fault of the person using it.
Blizzard
: They make mistakes like this a LOT. I remember hearing about how one person's account was hacked, and all of her stuff (bank, guild bank, bags, equipped items, etc.... on ALL of her characters) was stolen (people who listen to World of Warcast will probably know about this as well). When Blizz
finally
started replacing her stolen items, they kept giving her the wrong stuff; instead of selling the crap that wasn't hers, she kept telling them they were sending things that didn't belong to her or her guild. Guess what happened because of Blizzard's %^&*-ups; she was perma-banned for "exploiting the economy" (thankfully, they decided that what they did was a dumbass move and un-banned her account; IMHO, such an honest person should be allowed to keep all the wrong stuff in addition to getting the right stuff back).
Apparently, they're screwing up achievements as well; on May 14, I got the
Damage Control
Achievement. First of all, there's no possible way I could have gotten it because I despise PvP; the only reason I go into a BG is for the World Events. Second, there's no way I could have gotten it because, at the precise moment I got it,
I WAS IN ^&*!ING ULDUAR
.
User
: If someone happened to get a GM item for some reason, they should immediately contact a GM and let them know, not use it to cheat their way through a Raid. What's worse is that the entire guild was, apparently, completely fine with this behavior.

why did they even make this if they know its cheating even if they didnt they should look who prepared this guys items and question him for putting it in there. i know the item says "cheater" but way over half the people on world of warcraft would of used it anyway because killing ANYBODY with 1 shot is just great! and cant the tell if a new item has been added to the database and who is this martin and why did he put his job on the line to make a item that would of been removed anyway unless he knew he is already getting fired and decided to make the last item.

If I would get an item like that, I would definitely inform a GM about, but of course I would want to see what it does because of the fun it gives. Dunno if it worked in BG's but would be awesomely funny, seeing all opponents drop never knowing what hit them... And of course run a few instances. Then I would talk to a GM who could strip me of any achievement or honor points I had received from the moment I got the item, but come on..... getting something like this is just too good to be ignored.

Martin is the one who created the Speed Hack, and also discovered many bugs and exploits in the Beta past of Classic, and told Blizzard about many others.
He also was one of the first players to venture in Outland Design map (early in Classic), by scripting the Blasted Lands a hack to make it works and launch him into this new (and unfinished) zone.
There are aren't any new references to Martin, but some people belive he is working to Blizzard (helping in anti-hacking and exploiting) or something like that.
Many olders GMs know Martin as "The One Who Have no life" ;)

The real tragedy is that they used it. If an end game ret paladin/dps warrior/ dpsk had this shirt, he could be better than any other dps of the same class in the world. They would all have the same gear, the same skills, but this guy would have 34 more strength. If they had just resisted the urge to use this, they would have a more subtle advantage, but one that would not have gotten them banned, and one that you are never going to get elsewhere. Think of it this way: would you give up the only shirt in the game that has stats on it, for whatever reason? Would you risk it by doing something stupid?
Also, in response to people talking about the death effect on it with regards to bosses in ulduar: if it functions like the GM kill command, it kills the npc, it does not reduce them to 1 and have them do their thing with the chest and such. So, you would not be able to use it in that way.

I think it is funny how you can get banned for just walking into a zone that they dont like players in or using some stupid item. I mean we pay about 15 bucks a month for the game when if it wasnt online we would have no problem bliz really needs to lighten up on banning people. because my friend just fell into a zone that wasnt suppose to be accsessed(bottom of uc) and he got banned. so they need to start lightening up on this %^&*.

This item crashes all wotlk clients even when querying the server for the information from hovering over it, as well as other items like it. Their entry information isnt supportive. It's like a Gamemaster summoning a player to Programmers Island - your client crashes because Blizzard dont release the patch information to support your client during your duration on the island. You can however use these items on private servers as most Emulators have the patch that supports it. Programmers Island etc etc, requires a custom patch available from most decent WoW-Exploit/Hack sites. You'll only be able to get their via Recall Port commands though, and that item and any other like it is only obtainable if you have the ability to add items by entry ID to yourself or others. Unless you're on a retarded private server whom has them in Vendors. >_>
Legend has it, your story is bullsh!t. :(

With great Power come great Responsability. If i was given this item i wouldn't have told the GM right away. i would have tried it, maybe 1 man Magister terrace or some mobs on an area, i would never had used it for PvP or Achievements as they wouln't be the same... is like if you were in a private server and won a battle agains an average player using Donor items... is an empty achivement, you didn't really achieve anything!... there are many comparisons to make on this terms... but IMO it was right they banned him, he didn't USE the Martin Fury as you said... he EXPLOITED it... he won uber achivements solo'd raids and such, hes an $%^&*!@ and was rightly banned... now the thing it would be right to argue about is his friends... they didn't have the martin fury and they weren't the exploters! start the argue from there...
EDIT: i once went to a private server and got this... it's pure sht. you can't use it it sais your not allowd to perform the spell and i had to throw it away... as it was also selled by 1 copper coin... it was like the DK armour.

Ok, so first of all... these people who said Karatechop was totally in the wrong are being totally ridiculous, if you had it, you'd use it ... if i had it i would definitely use it, i would also use my brain, i wouldn't get ANY one-time achievements like world first etc i would wait patiently until they had been taken THEN if anything i would solo the raid, i wouldn't talk about it to anyone in-game and would only talk to a GM when I had some better gear, yes... eventually i would give over the item but saying that you wouldn't use it is ridiculous.
Secondly, The GM that let the item slip is EMPLOYED by Blizzard, it is therefore His/Blizzards fault that Karatechop acquired the item If you are sending an impossibly powerful item to somebody via mail it is your responsibility to make sure it is delivered to the right person, you don't think 'Hmm, Karatechop.... yeah that looks about right I'll send it to him' you LOOK who you are sending it to.
Downrate if you must, i still stand by my argument.

Personally, I think it was sort of both parties' fault.
I mean, the guy DID use this to clear Ulduar, and that isn't really right, but honestly, can you really expect someone NOT to do it? Seriously. I'm ready and willing to bet that if you gave one of these to every person in WoW for a day, 99.9% of the people who got it would use it to clear out a big badass raid. Now, I'm not saying the guy should totally be let off the hook, but I don't think he (and his whole guild, infact) should've gotten completely slammed like he did either. Maybe removing half the gear they got and then banning the raid for a week or two.
And then, there's the GM. IMO, that guy should've gotten fired. Giving this to a player is a total screw-up worthy of the loss of the GM's job, mistake or no.

Requirement for "We are Legendary" guild achivements on the BETA test realm.
Along with "Kill garr 9650 times hoping for the binding to drop"
funny.

The gun comparison is just silly. The girl giving you the gun doesn't make the law and can't give you the right to bypass the law. If you shot her or anyone with the gun it would be illegal and immoral.
On the other hand, if a GM gives you a special item, well they work for Blizzard and take care of the game. They have the authority to give players special privileges if they want. In the legal system, what happened is called entrapment I believe (GM giving an item, which understates that using the item is permitted, then punishing for using the item).
From a moral point of view, the two situations are also different. Everyone has a sense of real-world morals. You know it's wrong to kill a person even if they ask you to (let's ignore the debate over euthanasia).
However, it is difficult for a player do figure out what is moral and immoral in a video game like WoW. Doing something unfair to other players is obviously immoral, but sometimes it is hard to understand if something you do is fair or not.
There are several things to consider here:
- Karatechop is just a player, the item was given by a GM. GMs know the game much better than players, they know how everything works and thus they are in a better position to decide what is fair or not.
- The item was given (by mistake) as a compensation for items lost through hacking. It was not entirely unreasonable to assume it was given intentionally to replace the lost equipment.
- Perhaps Karatechop did not know the full power of the item. Maybe he thought there was a security system built into the item to avoid abuse. For example, NPCs killed with this item could be prevented by the game from dropping powerful loot.
- Maybe Karatechop didn't realize the powerful things he could do with the item if he wanted to (maybe he wasn't aware how powerful some weapons are or the existence and importance in some achievements).
He had reasons to assume use of the item was permitted by the GM, and if he was wise then he thought the GM knew better than him whether that item is fair or not, so all the more reasons to use it without worrying about it being a mistake.

"- The item was given (by mistake) as a compensation for items lost through hacking. It was not entirely unreasonable to assume it was given intentionally to replace the lost equipment."
Wow, you definitely don't understand how the recovery process works. When you get hacked, blizzard replaces the items that were taken. Say you lost some "epics" they don't just give you some random epics back, they give you the epics you lost - All this data is stored by Bliz.
So those above analogies are a little extreme. Here's one for you:
You're house gets robbed, the police come and find the person that took your stuff, and get your stuff back to you. After the cop leaves, you realize that he left his badge, allowing you to pretend to be a cop - surely that must be to compensate for the police letting your house get broken into right?
But again, I could definitely understand someone using something once just to test it out.
It was also used on Maly, 25man OS, and 25man Ulduar. All told Karatechop used it 14 times.
ohrly, thats easily abuse.

It looks like blizz realized that it was to powerful for any mortal to poses, so they cursed it. And now anyone who dare use it's awesome power will incinerate!

Blizzard should have just fired the Gamer Master who made that accident. It was the Game Master's fault afterall. The player was given an item and he used it, there's nothing bad about it. Furthermore, if this item was made purely for testing why wasn't it removed when the patch went on live? Is that the player's fault? I don't think so.
Now some nerd will reply giving me what the Terms of Use say. I DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT THE TERMS OF USE, IT'S STILL BLIZZARD'S FAULT!
Oh! And by the way, changing the shirt's effect won't make us forget, Blizzard ;)
Indeed, he had utterly no free will in this whatsoever. He didn't choose to use it, it just happened.

One time when my account was hacked, I got all of my items back. One time, when my mom's was hacked, she got a mailbox full of Saronite Bars-- all that hers could support, and a few hundred (or a few thousand... forgot) gold.
All in all, this was an accident-- if this was done on purpose, a GM would've been screwed (still would've anyhow). Yes, it probably shouldn't have been done. Let me give a great example.
You're house gets robbed, the police come and find the person that took your stuff, and get your stuff back to you. After the cop leaves, you realize that he left his badge, allowing you to pretend to be a cop - surely that must be to compensate for the police letting your house get broken into right?
True. Ish. Is there anything wrong with playing cop for a day? Yes there is, but not as wrong as as playing cop, and arresting people, and doing all sorts of unmentionable things.
To compare this to WoW... yes he killed some bosses. Big whoop. If he used this in PvP, then I'd be pissed. I agree, a 1 week-1 month ban should've been issued, as a statement and punishment. But it's not like he went to a starting area/major city/battleground and went crazy with this. THAT would be worth a ban.
Edit: Viewing in 3d, I just want a shirt that actually looks like this.

The ore and gold your mom received was probably just the hackers trying to launder the loot by passing it around to different hacked accounts so its harder to trace the origins.

You have it all wrong there are lots of people that play this game for the challenge that raid progression gives them if they thought people could cheat like this with out any repercussions they would leave the game to something else because the challenge would be gone. which would mean blizzard would loose money. Same thing if he used this in an arena or one of the rated battle grounds. cheating in them undermines the integrity of the ranking system and makes people not want to play. If he just went nuts in a major city (which is what i probably would have done) He would just piss the few people he killed off and they would have been happy after blizz gave him a 5 or so day ban that they would have given him and taken the item away.
In Raids Arenas and Rated BGs it would cause people to loose faith in the rating system and leave for a game they trust more in open world pvp or regular bg's it would just piss off the people he killed and even they would laugh about it afterward when they found out what had happened and that it had been fixed.

I think Blizzard should give everyone one of those when they create a new character, I mean the shirt with original "KILL" stats. This way they can test everyone, and when this gets used instant ban. I am sure someone playing months or even years at oen point they will do it:)
Might lose some customer buts ure as hell would be good to get rid of all the muppets:)

Y'know... what I REALLY want to know is... what's it look like? The fact there's no screenshots saddens me greatly.
....And would I take armor damage for this death? Otherwise it'd be a cheap way of saying "lol, no" when you spy someone preparing to utterly devastate your lowbie.

I can't understand why he went straight Ulduar... I mean, why not go straight to ICC and just annihilate everyone there including the Lich King? There's so many other, and potentially more destructive, uses that this could have been used for when it was an artifact. He had to have had some idea that his account was going to be banned for doing it, so why not go out with an even bigger bang?

I remember seeing the tooltip for this item for the first time many years ago when someone linked it during an AV battle, back in vanilla WoW, and from that moment that I saw it until just now when I read all these comments and the stories linked here, I didn't believe it was real. I really got a kick out reading all this stuff and learning that not only was it real, that it did indeed do what it said, and that Blizzard got taught a harsh lesson regarding the wisdom of creating such an item that functions on the live, online customer realms and not just their own private playground, haha. Genius! I for one would have at least tried it once to see if it was legitimate had I received it in the mail. Can't blame the guy for having a little fun with it, this is a GAME after all, and nothing at all like keeping a million dollars given to you by mistake in a tax refund from the IRS. Shame on Blizzard for perm-banning the guy for using an item in his inventory as it was intended. They made the item, not him! Pretty funny overall! :D

was Artifact quality and had the following stats:
+34 Strength
Use: Kills all enemies in a 30 yard radius. Cheater.
100 Charges
Sell Price: 1c
Just to help with any confusion as to why, what is now a Suicide item was a big deal when given to a player.
