Keep in mind that even if you resist the shadow flame, without the cloak equipped, you still have a chance of getting the aforementioned dot placed on you.
I would say this cloak is rather good just because the +fire res. You can put a +15 fire res enchant on it, makes a good 31.
I still use it while killing Vaelastrasz.
Anyone tried BWL up to Nefarian at level 70 without this cloak and could say if it's still necessary? Or can you heal through the shadow flame?
Best looking cloak in the game, in my opinion.
Even at 70, with Fully Kara+ epicd out Tanks, Shadowflame RULES.
If you wish to get past the 3 drakes and have a prayer at Nefarian, even at 70, your MTs should have an Ony cloak.
to get the onyxia scale cloak pattern you actually have to get the onyxia head and start the quest; once you start the quest you go to stormwind and turn it in; then after you turn it in you will get another quest called "the journey has just begun" and he will train you the cloak.
This cloak is still needed for Nefarian. The shadowflame is an instant kill at the end you can't heal through it. (I tried and when the debuff expired I took 180,000 dmg)
Although not exactly legit, you can still do the Nef encounter with very limited ony cloaks, the raid can hide at the back of the cave furthest from the door to avoid getting Shadowflame, even with this cheat method the tank will still need at the very least
You can avoid the original shadow flame from nefarion when he lands by hiding behind the throne. Unfortunately the tank still needs the cloak, cuz unless you can burn nef down in less than 20 seconds, he goes rampaging through the raid shadow flaming everything. Tried this as of 3.0.2 and had to get a tank with the cloak to come. Good Luck.
the throne does not appear to work as off 3.0.3. We had 4 people hide behind it, and we had 4 skeletons behind it after he came down.
ShadowFlame does 20k + DoT eats most tanks w/o cloak below 28k hp if there's only 1 healer. pray your 2nd healer isn't CC'd. (this is at level 80)
Our group did faced Nefarion without this cloak (a group of 15 level 75-80's), and were subsequently destroyed by shadowflame, so there still is a use, and a need to have this particular piece of equipment. They are easy to get aswell, since at level 80 Onyxia can easily be 2 manned, if not solo'd by some classes.
Nefarion, a level 60 boss that still owns face at level 80. I love it.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##
I just simply admire Blizz that they can still kick our ass with a lvl60 boss while we're at 80.This is the way it should be all the time.
Take note that you need a Cindecloth Cloak to make this, which is made with TAILORING, not with LEATHERWORKING.
Today we tried 15 man Nefarian. All lvl 80 without cloak. None of us was specced healers but it went well at other bosses. At Nefarian we go RAPED! Even when he landed we have a druid in each grp popping tranquility. We die SO fast.
So the cloak is still needed in Wrath.
I'm just curious to know if anyone has tried this but:
can a paly use "divine shield" to avoid getting hit with Shadow Flame (both Dot and initial hit)
or a DK use "Anti-magic shield" both talented and not talented... Will the DoT Shadow Flame still be applied or no? I imagine that just the fact that the DK has Anti Magic Shield up would decrease the damage significantly.
I don't know whether or not either of these abilities will make a successful mitigation but can someone please confirm if these abilities work on Shadow Flame (initial hit and DoT if you don't mind)?
It's funny how hard people make this encounter. Nobody had the cloak, but we still 1-shot him. All you have to do is hide behind the throne and tank pop health cooldowns.
Even at level 80...
We went last night in BWL for a full clear (we were bored).
Our main tank and one of our healers had their cloak on.
Nefarion landed and everybody got killed. I'm one of the best geared resto druid on my server and i got caught by surprise by the swift DoT. needless to say everybody (15 lvl 80's) died within seconds except the tank and the healer which managed to 2man nefarion in about 5 minutes.
This is still a Pug-wiper at level 80 if you don't know what you're doing. The first thing i did after clearing BWL was to solo onyxia and get my stupid cloak.
I guess i'll know for next time :P(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##
no one has mentioned it before,,, but this cloak has unique and cool model .. one of the best IMHO
good news they will reuse Ony in patch 3.2.2 so there might be a chance that similar model cloak will drop from her,,
Can anybody on the PTR tell us if Onyxia is still skinnable in the level 80 version? And if so, if this cloak (or better yet, a level 80 upgrade to it) is still craftable? People might want to still be able to kit out friends to pug BWL before the next expansion throws a monkey wrench into all those plans.
It seems that even though this cloak has an item level of 60, you can't enchant it with
+20 Fire Resistance
Posting to confirm that with Onyxia updated to a level 80 encounter, is still skinnable for Onyxia scales.
Should be mentioned that 'trash' mobs before her are also skinnable, and drop a *!@#load of rugged leather.
Additionally, I read on WoWwiki, that once a leatherworking delivers the Head of Onyxia
, they automatically learn the pattern to make the cloak
EDIT: After about 4 PuGs that failed to even get to Onyxia, I finally got her down and won the head. After delivering it,
gives you a quest (as in, complete quest button, rather than the accept button) and teaches you how to make the cloak. This also counts for the
Loremaster of Kalimdor
achievement, which I'm currently working on with my druid.
Confirmed we downed him last night with guild we had me as MT pally 38k Buffed, 2 healers and 4 80 DPS we never got shadow flame and he was on the ground a fair bit. So as of at least Yesterday the cloak is no longer needed no one got behind the throne and no one took any damage either. Don't belive me look in the armory for Candlepally on server Underbog
If you weren't a leatherworker when handing the head quest in you can still learn this recipe by talking to Overlord Runthak just inside the entrance to Orgrimmar (I assume for the Alliance talking to the equivalent of Runthak in Stormwind will also have the same results!)
Not sure if it was a bug or not, but my LWer learned the pattern just from skinning her. Skinned her after we downed her for the scales and it did the little gold flash thingy and said you have learned to craft Onyxia scale cloak.
For those leatherworkers looking to add this to their book:
Travel to Stormwind.
Start and turn in
A Most Puzzling Circumstance

Is this cloak still obtainable after Cata? As it looks great to the Rogue T2 (The shmexy set) exept from that question, this was a life saver back from when you actually needed a 40man raid to down Nef in BWL =,D
With new armory you can now see hidden stat of that cloak: +15 holy resistance.
AMAZING vs rets!
As of Patch 5.4.2, the Thaurissan Firewalker in Burning Steppes (Eastern Kingdoms) still drop the Pattern: Cindercloth Cloak . I just looted it @ 47.9, 39.5.
The Cindercloth Cloak (crafted with the Tailoring profession) is one of the required mats to craft the Onyxia Scale Cloak (crafted with the Leatherworking profession).
Hope this helps if you're wondering if you can still craft this cloak.
Currently unobtainable in game, it's been removed. That's why you can't skin her, or learn the recipe anymore Source:
Greetings xxxxxx, this is Game Master Shuyect.
I understand that you're having an issue with learning Onyxia's scale cloak.
Currently this recipe/item is not obtainable therefore we cannot assist with this quests completion or granting/restoration of the recipe.
Currently still obtainable in BfA.
Go find Onyxia's Lair
. The head starts
which leads you to your faction capital for turn in. After turning in that quest
(Horde) becomes available. Completing
The Journey Has Just Begun
(either version) automatically teaches a leather worker this pattern. There is no "pattern" item. So if you're not a LW with the proper level and LW skill level when you complete the quest you don't learn the pattern. I am not sure, but
The Journey Has Just Begun
probably isn't even available to non-leatherworkers.
and skinned 2
on my first run through the raid with this toon, and had no problem getting either of the quests leading to this pattern.
confirmed working still in BFA Patch 8.1.5

The Journey Has Just Begun Completed.
In case anyone is wondering, if you completed the quest years ago and got the recipe, but then abandoned leatherworking, there's no way to get it restored if you take up LW again. I must have completed it way back in vanilla and changed profs a few times since then, but now I've switched back to LW and got the All The Things mod the completionist in me is sad that I can't get 100% on leatherworking :-(
Here's the message I got from a GM when I asked:
Game Master Denvorer here to assist you today and I hope your day is going excellent. I understand you had concerns with having the Onyxia Scale Cloak recipe learned in the past, but abandon the profession and after picking it up again, you couldn't obtain the recipe again.
I apologize for any frustrations and confusion this may have caused. During my investigation, I can confirm that
if you did the quest for this recipe and learned it and then later abandon the profession and pick it up again, you do lose the recipe and there is no way to recover it
. Unfortunately, this appears to be intended by design from our Dev team and because of this, we do not restore the recipe. It appears this is how things worked back in Vanilla and the Dev team designed to keep it this way with how these professions worked with some of these recipes.
Your feedback is very important and if you feel that this recipe needs to be changed so you can obtain it again if you did the quest, please let our Dev team know by posting on the forums this feedback. Could be something they may consider changing in the future.
