PSA: Currently there is a glitch that allows players to unlock the
for all of their class' hidden skins if they have discovered just one of the base hidden skins and its adjacent recolors (for instance, someone who found the Twisting Anima of Souls and unlocked its 100 Dungeons palette swap will simultaneously unlock the 100 Dungeons palette swaps for Frost and Unholy's hidden skins,
even without discovering the Hook or Runes
Many players are using this glitch to replicate the blue, red and bronze skins for Bone Reaper.
This glitch does not allow you to unlock the base appearance for the skin, however,
and may likely be patched out at a later date.
The first Hook - the real one, in all it's purple glory -
HAS BEEN FOUND
by Füra of Drak'thul-EU, a.k.a. d00mgiv3r on Discord.
From what we can tell, summoning an Army of the Dead ghoul with Apocalypse after reaching AK6+ has a chance to summon
(in addition to the ghouls summoned - an extra one from the cast), who will
Professor Putricide's Lost Journal
upon expiration (
Reading the Journal points you toward
via a trap door within his boss room in ICC (
You do not need to read the book in order to access the trap door, only summon the special minion.
Within you will find
; kill him to retrieve the Hook. (Warning: Stitchwork is 110, and he's not alone. You can find details on the scenario on my comment on his page.)
It appears it has a chance to spawn any time you summon an Army of the Dead ghoul with
- even in Acherus, the Proving Grounds, or raids!
When the minion spawns, he will
, asking "Why have I been brought back to fight for you?"; unfortunately, he will not fight for you before he despawns.
Spawning the minion gives you personal credit for
, which is what lets you into the trap door. You can't read someone else's book for credit.
The trap door puts you into a private scenario. Sorry, can't instance-share!
You do not need Reanimation or a certain number of unlocked traits in Apocalypse, just AK 6+.
Glyph of Foul Menagerie does not hinder or aid your chances of seeing the "ghoul". (The first two people who spawned him had the glyph, several since have not.)
VERY LOW spawn chance - we have some players going on spamming Apocalypse for 20-30 hours without seeing it. More ghouls means more chances - pop Apocalypse at max stacks of Festering Wounds to maximize your odds!
We have unconfirmed sightings of the mob spawning from casting
proper. Try cycling both to increase your odds!
Recommendation: Starting a trial with Trial Master Rotun in the Proving Grounds will reset all of your cooldowns. Use this to accelerate your cast rate!
If you're worried that you'll summon the special minion and not realize it, replace your Apocalypse hotkey with this macro:
This displays your progress on summoning the special "ghoul" in chat each time you cast Apocalypse. If it returns false, you haven't summoned him yet; if it returns true, you have summoned him in a previous cast. (It will return false in the same instance you summon successfully, but if you're looking for the true/false, you'll see him speak anyway.) You can also play with the conditional to have it shout at you so you don't have to look at chat; for instance, you can have the Lich King namedrop your weapon when you add
/run if IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(44188) == true then PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\LichKing\\IC_Lich King_Special01.ogg", "Dialog") end
(The "Dialog" determines what volume mixer it aligns with. I turn sound down and Dialog up.) Put the two together and you should never miss it spawning, even in the heat of battle! Plus the soundfile's cool.
Again, if the macro above returns "true", you've already won! Don't panic if you haven't read the book, just head to ICC!
EDIT 10/16/16: Just got it tapping 8-stack Apocalypse on a Withered who popped out an Aethril node. If it's not a dungeon, it's worth it to cast at every chance you get, folks!
Original text of this post:
Disappointingly, nobody's been able to datamine the sources of the hidden artifact appearances.
However it is worth noting, of the known artifact appearances, there's been
whose source is entirely
of either the Broken Isles or Order Hall extensions (and even that "exception" has loose connections to the Order Hall). The many, many people who read this one's description and thought "I'll check ICC", as well as the other Scourge dungeons/raids, have thus far been sorely disappointed.
(Granting, it may in fact be
they're out of the way that many skins haven't been found yet, but I find it unlikely that this wouldn't have been found in the first place nearly every Unholy DK has thought to check, even with a low drop rate.)
Unfortunately for DKs, the only non-passive Order Hall perk we can research is for the daily combat pony. Maybe we're like monks and have a chance get one of the undiscovered two from tapping the Hitching Post - but again, like monks, somebody would probably have found it by now that way.
There has been speculation for several artifact skins that if it wasn't found yet in Beta, its source may not yet have even been implemented. However,
and numerous tickets to GMs have all stated that the triggers are already in-game... we just haven't reached them yet. And no, they have no hints to give - they probably don't know the specifics either.
More likely, one of the steps to the skin itself may be gated behind Artifact Knowledge instead (as several were discovered at AK4-6 and likely will continue to be), hence why nobody has seen it.
Azjol'nerub is also empty. The majordomo of the Lich King doesn't hold the hook in the Ancient city..
Might be a longshot. But as the dreadlords created Apocalypse. It could be posible that any of them have the hidden artifact hook.
I saw someone in reddit who said it might be related to the
class upgrade. It makes sense to me
My speculative bet is on
. Only time will tell once we get our Class Hall leveled to 5.
If I had to guess, I'd say that successful missions that have a chance to return
will also have a chance to bring you
Why would this be a logical connection?
, a clear inspiration to the design of Bonereaper's Hook.
I'd say it's more likely than the Violet Hold bosses (
) despite their direct reference to Icecrown Citadel in the Dungeon Journal's Lore tab. While they are the only link in Broken Isles I've found so far that directly references ICC, you'd think that even as a rare drop chance, with the amount of DK's running Violet hold that someone would have seen it by now considering how many people found other hidden Artifact skins off of Dungeon and Raid bosses even in Beta.
Edit: All out of date speculation. The actual method has been discovered!
In addition to what Leviatharan stated above, the prerequisite triggers are thought to be at least AK6 as well as completing the hidden tracker achievement
Hidden Tracking - Apocalypse Ghouls Summoned
. After both of those have been completed, any time you use
, the special
mob has a small chance to appear.
You will see the line in chat:
Army of the Dead: Why have I been brought back to fight for you?
He will drop
(Professor Putricide's Lost Journal). Once you read from the journal, you can go to Professor Putricide's room in ICC, find the Trap Door, fight
and claim your
So in Azsuna there is a soul forge called Apocalypse. Inside is a npc called Legion Felsmith and he casts a spell called "Unholy Frenzy" on himself. Worth checking out.. Coords are 32,52.
I'm just gonna throw this at a wall and see if it sticks for anyone.
Reading the artifact lore/story/whatever for tupacalypse, It's inferred that the last owner of the blade (before adrian) resided in badlands, and may have got the blade itself from inside blackrock mountain. My search has come up with nothing but maybe there is something worth finding in either badlands/burning steppes/blackrock mountain.
The problem im having currently is that there isn't any significant event that has happened in these areas that would come from apocalypse (diseases, distrust, and the like),.
The other theory the story presents is that the blade was cloaked and buried in the area where Laith Sha'ol fought Aegwynn, but it's hard to determine where they fought exactly, since the places that Laith wandered to with the blade are unknown, such as Corwell, which he more or less destroyed.
Right now i'm working on "maxing out" Rottgut in the hopes that he will give me the hook, he is an abomination so it makes since for him to have a hook and if i get him to a high enough level maybe he will just give it to me? idk has anyone tried anything relating to Rottgut?
Just so you know:
There is a hidden achievement called
Hidden Tracking - Appearance Unlock - Base - Color 4 - Death Knight, Unholy
which tracks the number of Ghouls summoned by
. There is also an achievement calld
Hidden Tracking - Apocalypse Ghouls Summoned
, which actually does nothing.
Nonetheless it is highly probable that the 2000 ghouls summoning is a prerequisite to make the item appear.
Note: Addons like Overachiever let you track hidden achievements.
Spit-balling a bit here :
He's an abomination and his name is Hook. Maybe a rare drop or something around him?
Here's some news for you guys, you can get the skin even though you haven't find The Bonereaper's Hook item.
All you need is Blood DK's hidden appearance, unlocking the second, third or fourth color of Touch of Undeath can also unlock other hidden appearance's secondary color.
It also unlock Frost DK's too.
On the second floor of Acherus map appeared with taurine and undead DK. Maybe she begins a quest.
I'm 'gonna throw another idea at a wall. I haven't tried. But I've been fishing lately to get the fishing artifact then it hits me. What if you can get this from fishing at the bottom of icecrown citadel where you find the heart of the lich king.
As with most of the Unholy DK crew, I have been searching around for clues or anything really on how to get
and in my search I realized most likely we will not see it till Nighthold unlocks. The reason I think this is because of Apocalypse's history and it being made by the Dread Lords, and Nighthold just happens to have one big bad Dread Lord in it, Tichondrius. But this just my thoughts on things because it seems like we are spinning our wheels here.
A guy in my server that have it said to me that you can find it in hellheim but didn't tell me how
What if we accept, that "crude and brutal weapon" is apocalypse, so we need to feed it with energy of ICC. MB like we fed shadowmourne, or something like this... I dk how we can feed it. So i hope u can speculate a little with "steady settling energy of ICC"
So, an observant guildy pointed out to me a small
jinyu house and fish statue
in the water south east of acherus in the broken isles. It's just before the drop off into the fatigue zone - but given that there is a set of random fish-themed structures put out of the way, and yet so close to Acherus specifically I can't help but think they may be significant. I searched around for a while in Unholy, loot on Unholy, Apocalypse equipped, even with the Underlight Angler equipped and didn't find anything :/
Maybe one of you can put the pieces together, just adding a my bit to the search.
Credit for the find goes to Postcard - my adventurous guildy (unless this is not a new development)
Edit: There are several pots scattered around the immediate area didn't see anything in them, but perhaps there's one I missed? Honestly, grasping at straws here haha
I have seen 2 people with the Bonereaper's Hook. What they both had in common was the achievement
This boss has abilities of pure death and decay!
My biggest bet is that it drops from this boss.
Found someone with this today. As someone pointed out he has done Nythendra on Mythic so it is possible it's a drop from her.
Link to his armory
Its probably has nothing to do with getting the hidden appearance but , why can we duel random Dks on the top floor of Acherus ?i fought a few figured it wont hurt to try , didn't get anything out of it , i honestly think this is insane , no one has found it yet
propably nothing as usual but today i got a special quote from npc in val sharah
tried to speak with NPC but nothing happened
It looks like someone has finally found it (these are not my screenshots):
Putricide's Journal; but it has been confirmed on the mmo-champ thread.

Edit 3: **It's shaping up to likely just be a special Army of the Dead proc from Apocalypse, with AK6,
and possibly the Reanimation Perk
A new guess here: Putricide's Journal could be in library of Dalaran. I talked to Robert Newhearth, Head of the Curators, and he said there were some books not arrived yet and will arrive in weeks. He mentioned those books flew to Khaz Modan when Dalaran city did second teleportation.
CONFIRMED?: Bonereaper's Hook is dropped and the finder was using the Reanimation perk. More to come.
Putricide's Journal Area Trigger

actually need to read the journal. it spawning is enough to flag your character "TRUE"
"FALSE" means you have not yet spawned the book.

because why not.

1. Create abomination into class hall
2. I am going with my friends Glory of Legion Hero, we made at this time.
3. We pull second boss, she spawn imps. After that I saw that book, she drop book before die.
4. Going into ICC at Putricide. Into right side that room is portal to secret lab - "trap door".
5. Going at just kill Stitchwork
does it need to be apocalypse or army of the dead counts too?
Does anyone know how many it takes to get the hidden achievement? Been doing this for about 3-4 hours.
I hate that I am having difficulties with this however I have searched for this achieve and it says 0/1000. I went to the target dummy summoned my ghouls with Apocalypse and it still remained at 0/1000. I am not a fan of Overachieve since it doesn't appear the full name unless you track the achieve.
FINALLY GOT IT!>
My trait level is 23 when the orc spawned. (
My AK is level 7.
Got the 2000 Ghouls Summon Hidden Achievement.
Menagerie Glyph on Army of the Dead (doubt this affects the spawn)
Got the Abomination Class Hall Upgrade (doubt this affects the spawn)
<Targetting the Orc proc that spawned.
< book spawning as orc dies / despawns.
< reading book.
After getting the book i went to icc using a save from a friend to get to the lab.
Teleport is on the right side of the boss room:
Some mini boss npcs inside
finally the mob that drops the hook:
Macro i used on Training Dummys in Order Hall with a true or false respond to see if i got the book spawn or not.
For Spamming Apocalypse
To reset All CDs talk to Proving Grounds NPC and to speed things up leave instance AFTER starting a trial
Hope any of this information can be helpful to those who may be confused if they reach any of these stages.
Good Luck farming the Apearance!:D
It just recently dropped for me. I won't bother linking screenshots because they're already provided by someone above, but I can say that it 100% does not require Reanimation Class Hall upgrade, or a certain trait amount (as already discovered). Again, I'm another with Artifact Knowledge: Level 6.
Also, just to clarify, you do not need to pick up anything (like the book) to gain access to the appearance. All you have to do is read the book that drops when the special Army of the Dead dies and/or despawns.
Best of luck to each and every one of you. Now go and get your hands on this weapon, and disembowel the living that stand in your path afterwards.
So we need both Hidden Tracking - Apocalypse Ghouls Summoned and Hidden Tracking - Appearance Unlock - Base - Color 4 - Death Knight, Unholy for this, correct?
#1 Giskler got it 5/10/2016 (dd/mm/yy) after spending 11 hours
#2 Kamikorosu got it 6/10/2016 (dd/mm/yy) After spending 7 hours
Walkthrough of the process of receiving the artifact
Guys i have keep trying to spamming ghouls with This script
it was always saying false ,before 5 min i spammed apocalypse again and now its says " True" instead of false does that mean i can go to grab my hidden artifact ?
got it as well. AK7, completed the hidden 2000 summon achi long ago (09.16).
spent 20.5 hours in Acherus hitting the dummy after I received the book.
This is how I got it:
Create a macro:
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
Go to proving grounds, you can find the NPC close to the training dummies.
Right click the Panda, spam the macro.
Run to the first spawn mob, spam FS, FS, FS, Apoc. Go back to the Panda, right click him, spam the macro again.
First day I spent like 5 hours in the dummy, and decided to use this method, got in about 10min.
I am up to roughly 12 hours using the PG method (averaging 4 apoc hits per 1.5 mins) and I still dont have it. Praise RNG
EDIT - Got it after another 2.5 hours in PG.
After looking at the few macros on here and the Discord, I decided to make my own. Forgive me if these macros are a bit crude (I hardly use macros to perform rotations or talk to npcs).
Stand here to interact with Rotun and be able to death grip:
1) Here is a macro to leave and enter the scenario without "leaving the group":
2*) Sequence Target Rotun, *press interact button here*, select tank trial (number will change depending on how many options you have to select, this is a fresh character so I am selecting tank bronze), summon AoTD (I have noticed that AoTD sometimes doesn't cast which requires another press), the 44188 script, *interact with Rotun again*, select option to yield, confirm yield:
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
*This macro does require you to use a key bind to interact, I set mine to ` right next to 1.*
3) I noticed that a few people on the discord had to be reminded that they could death grip (insert dk mobility joke) and then use dark command before the 3x FS and apocalypse so here's what I made:
/castsequence Death Grip, Dark Command, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Apocalypse
Be aware that the script will spam your log with false until the orc shows up. If someone knows how to cut that out then I'm all ears to expand what little I know.
If you get too many minions and want to dismiss them or summon your ghoul/abomination:
/cast Raise Dead
This helped me a lot when grinding out 2000 ghouls summoned. Yes even with the
(abomination) talent chosen your total summoned will increase by 1. Before I remembered about PG and I was wailing on the training dummies, I spammed this when Apocalypse, Summon Gargoyle, and AoTD were on cd. Be sure to pick
All Will Serve
for instant cast.
So in summary my rotation would be (before targeting Rotun): 1,`,1, , *wait for mob*, 2 (death grip), 2 (dark command), 2 (FS 1), 2 (FS 2), 2 (FS 3), 2 (Apoc), 1, `, 1, wait out daze, repeat. You may not get 8 stacks of Festering Wounds, in which case you can add another FS to the cast sequence. I noticed that 3 Festering Strikes were enough if you worked fast enough (spam).
Again this is probably a few days too late to help but I thought it would be nice to compact down everything I saw and knew into a simple 3 button rotation. May RNGesus drop the journal and gift many legendaries.
*Edit: In typing all of this out I noticed that the cast sequence macro I had been using all night long has for some reason stopped working at around 12:30 AM central. It gives a not close enough error ignoring the death grip and dark command abilities. I really suspect Blizzard is behind this.
Ignore last edit. I just checked now and the /castsequence macro works fine.
Just got it, confirming that it is AK6 and I had a rank 13 artifact. I don't think artifact rank has anything to do with it.
They could have added a challenging questline or elite npc to fight for the hidden artifact skins, like they did for the green and purple wolfs for the hunter or the green fire for the warlocks.
Instead we now may pray to RNGesus once more and spam our artifact ability, but thank the gods we are not alone in this situation. (Look at them ret paladins camping the slime lel)
I'd prefer paying 8k gold like the BM hunters do over doing this. Hope the next hidden skin will actually be hidden or locked behind a challenge.
Just confirmed today that once the book has been spawned you can go to the next step without clicking on or reading the book. (aka i forgot to click the book then yolo'd over the prof patricides room and was able to see the trapdoor)
Got this just a few minutes ago. Didn't have the hidden achievement to summon 2000 ghouls from Apocalypse. I'm at 7 Artifact Knowledge and got 17 trait in the Unholy artifact. Spammed the Proving Ground for 2hours with the following macro:
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
Wait for the apparition to spawn, cast 3 Festering Strike followed by Apocalyspe and use Wraith Walk to reach Trial Master Rotun faster. Need to wait 4 seconds since it counts as a failed attempt and repeat.
Doesn't seem to be related to the Army of the Dead spell since it only counts the summoned ghouls from the Apocalypse spell. Didn't use the Raid Dead spell nor the Dark Arbiter. So it looks like this is a pure RNG based chance to summon the Orc Ghoul.
Hope this works,
Just dropped for me after ~10 hours of farming in PG. Orc spawned from an Apocalypse cast. AK7 with only 6 traits in my artifact.
Proof of low artifact level + drop:
found it on drakkari after 21 hours of farming,no orderhall perk required and find it at AK6 and artifact level 16
I've got the appearance today. AK 7, 24 perks. No reanimation trait. No 2k ghouls achievement. I was farming at the proving grounds. Thank you, community.
I've been doing this PG tactic for more than 5 hours like talk to the panda kill first add with apoc ofc and 8 stacks of FS
then yield and do it all over again. Am I doing it wrong or does it take that long?
Farmed PG for an hour this morning and about 3 hrs last night. Finally got it! Good luck to everyone else farming. Its a pretty low drop chance.
Approx 900 Apocalypse casts through 4 hrs of grinding.
Been doing the PG method for well over 7 hours now, still no luck.
AK7 and 18 traits. Got overachiever installed but the achievement hasnt ticked off yet?
Don't know if i'm doing something wrong or this is just the way it is lol.
been farming this the past 2 days now up to 35+hours am i missing something i have ak6 do i need that glyphe by any chance?
YES! Finally got it! Armory:
Best method for grinding it: 8 stacks of festering wound on target dummy in acherus, apocalypse, enter proving ground, start bronze dps, immediately leave, cooldowns are reset and you rinse and repeat. Took me 21 hours, don't get discouraged if you don't see it after grinding a bit.
TL;DR: Any SOLID idea on the drop rate? Estimation, perhaps? Just Apocalypse summons or all Undead types? And are people seriously grinding this or actually just botting? Or is this all just "Estimated Grind Times"?
(Read on for Flavor, or agitation, whichever comes first I guess)
So, I've been running the "math" on this...I just wanna be clear on something...
There's been talks that it has to do with the ghouls summoned from Apocalypse. I've seen some say AotD, personal "Raise Dead", 1000 ghouls from Apocalypse, 2000, etc...
One thing that's consistent? Drop chance.
I've seen some say it's taken 2.5 hours, others 6 hours, some in the 20+.
So I've taken a moment to compile a few things. If you max out your Apocalypse count via Festering Wounds, that's 8 Ghouls.
There are at least (that I've seen/counted), a rough estimate of 8 ghoul "variants", from Skeletons to Geists, and of course at least 3 or 4 actual Ghoul variant colors. Again, rough estimate, 8 kinds of "ghouls".
You pop a full 8 from Apocalypse. That's 64. 8 variant chances for each "summoned ghoul" slot. This is -not- including the mob that pops up. Adding that would end up being 72 in the roulette, if I'm not mistaken. (Math isn't my strongest subject, mostly applied when something of interest comes about, THUS this count scheme)
So now, there's a chance of 1, to pop up from 8 different (estimated) variants, 8 times. This is excluding Army, All Will Serve Talent choice, and Raise Dead.
The only consistency I see, is grind times. Again, GRIND TIMES....which seems that somewhere out there, you've got people literally somehow sitting for up to 20+ hours, without food/drink/bathroom breaks (assumed), landing this book? I mean, it's not even the actual -item- in question, just a book that allows access to a door in a raid that even hardcore raiders have been through? My question is.....why is Blizzard ran by a bunch of sadists? I'd like to get this without sacrificing precious time from World Quests, Mythics/Raids, etc. Who on this side of the green earth would sit for 20+ hours "GRINDING" a book, with no "break" in between without some sort of break? I'm not saying people are botting, but seriously?...I mean...yeesh....
At least give a percentage chance? Something? Anything? Positive answers of whether or not it's officially based on Apocalypse itself, or if AotD will help "improve" chances.
I really don't see how "JUST KEEP GRINDING" Is actually any help at all...
Just got mine not too long ago, after 20+ hours of grinding.
My trait is level 22, and my AK level is 7 (
I have the Glyph of Foul Menagerie.
, as you can see i am still learning it though (
I was entering starting, then teleporting out of the Proving Grounds, back to the Order Hall, to be able to spam Apocolypse every 20-30 seconds (depending on load screen times).
I was using this macro to make it easier for me to keep track:
Sure enough, after a while, the Book Dropped after the special minion spawned that said (which still caught me off guard):
Why have I been brought back to fight for you?
I then headed to Professor Putricides Room, of which found the Trap Door to the right of the room. Entered it and cleared some trash with no difficulty, and then killed Stitchwork to recieve my
I have also made a quick video, in the secret room and all the information and screenshots.
Has it been confirmed that the orc can spawn from casting Army of the Dead or is it just from Apocalypse? Because I can farm PG doing just AotD a lot faster than doing AotD + Apocalypse.
edit: I was linked
as proof that it does indeed spawn from AotD. As you can see AotD is still on cooldown while Apoc isn't. Good enough for me!
Edit: The guide version of my original comment is approved!
It has all the information in the original comment, and more, indexed and prettied up. If you have any questions, please consult that first, I've done my best to compile all verifiable information regarding this appearance.
If you like it, upvote it, and this comment so more can see it before asking the same questions over and over =p
someone told me that you can get the book from just spawning 2000 ghouls, is this correct?
Finally got this thing to drop. I spent about 15-25 hours farming it, I lost track. Mostly just Netflixed binged while spamming target dummies for the first several hours. Until I started using PG to reset CD's. It took about a total of 5-8 hours after that (again, not keeping track entirely).
So here's the breakdown:
Rank 22 (unrelated)
Glyph of Foul Menagerie (unrelated)
AK 8 (doesn't matter after 6)
I used Armory 30% of the time (Did not proc from Army)
Proc'd from Apocalypse after well over 250+ uses.
4,000+ Ghouls spawned with PG.
Hidden Achieve "NOT" acquired. (I really don't think this matter)
Macros I used.
One of the things I see a lot of conflicting information over regarding this Book is; people state, "Hidden Achievement - ghouls summoned, is required"
As far as I can tell, this is not the case. I have no idea what the actual number is to get the hidden achievement, but currently, accoring to Overachiever, I do NOT have the achievment completed.
So for the amount of ghouls I have summoned (with the occasional 6-7 insead of 8, accidentally).)
With using PG, and Target dummy in Acherus. I count 5 uses of Apocalypse in the course of ~3 minutes.Without getting too crazy with formula's, that's about 50 uses every 30 minutes. (50*8=400 = 800 an hour). I spend over 5 hours farming this with PG, and well over 10 hours without PG. I took the occasional break of course. 5 hours * 800 an hour is 4,000 ghouls summoned. Not including raids, dungeons, NOT using PG. It's safe to say I summoned well over 5,000 (that's being modest), until it spawned.
My question is, if you acquire the hidden achievement, will it show as completed? How many ghouls does it actually take? Some say 2,000. I think that's inaccurate, but who knows for sure? I can't figure out how to actually count a speific number.
I finally got the orc spawned. I spent about 10 hours on dummies in Acherus and in PG expecting him to spawn. After 10 hours, I gave up. But then I thought maybe mogging your artifact might cause orc to not spawn at all. So I removed transmog on my weapon and got the orc spawn in about 25 mins. Maybe just bad luck or maybe a bug. Worth a shot imo.
Confirmed: Putricide's Journal can drop in timewalking dungeons!
I was doing timewalking dungeons earlier today and it happened to drop in one, not sure if this means that it can drop anywhere in the game, but atleast I can confirm timewalking dungeons for now.

Guide for this smexy skin, added the macros that I thought were awesome and simplified this as much as possible! Hope it helps.
I doubt this will get seen with all the other comments, however I just got the journal to drop yesterday when killing a rare elite. I am sure that has nothing to do with it dropping, however I do want to point out. I
DID NOT summon the 2000 ghouls
, I have been tracking the hidden achievement with
and checking the progress every so often while questing.
I have screen shots of the achievement still showing
, yet I have the book on the ground in front of me. In saying that I also want to say that although the achievement shows in progress I think the achieve isn't very accurate. I have been playing since release and at least 6/7 hours every night, except the 5 days I was in Vegas. I found it very unlikely that I had not summoned 2000 ghouls by the writing of the original post.
I don' know if this helps however I was actually at artifact knowledge level 8, perhaps as you get higher in artifact levels the chance increases. I submitted pictures however I am waiting for them to be approved.
The book just dropped for me using the Proving Grounds method.
-No Abomination class hall upgrade
-Didn't achieve the hidden 2000 summon achievement
-Only been using apocalypse
It took me ~6h to get it. Seems it's really just gated behind AK6 and then you just have to pray to RNGesus. The only thing still unconfirmed is if it's possible to drop from Army of the Dead.
Ok so I don't even know if this book needs to spawn anymore, I have not seen the book spawn but the script /script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(44188)) shows true when I use it. Maybe it did spawn at some point and I missed it? Who knows but I can 100% confirm you
need to click / read the book. I went to ICC and the transporter was there. Possible the book is just a hint to go have a look?
Run the script, if it shows true go to ICC then we can confirm if the book is just a hint and you don't need it to spawn or if it does need to at some point.
This skin only requires Artifact Knowledge 6 or greater, everything else is coincidence and does not increase/decrease chances.
Ease of Life step-by-step:
1. Get NPCScan addon, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS and delete Creaturecache.wdb then enter the game and type /npcscan, under the custom tad add the ID
2. Enter the Proving Grounds and start a bronze tank trial, precast army of the dead, then get an 8 stack Apocalypse off on the illusion.
3. If NPCScan does no scream at you, speak with Trial Master Rotun and yield, repeat steps 1 and 2.
4. If NPCScan does squeal at you loot the book and profit!
Does Icecrown Citadel have to be on a specific mode for the trapdoor to be there? because I would prefer to run the raid on 25m heroic and not have to be on a different mode.
Got it from apocalypse ability in BG. Only had 2 festering wounds on the target.
Anyone know if the Proving grounds thing still works in 7.1.0? Been at it for a while.
Figured I would throw out this random piece of information in case anyone was wondering. If you are running the true/false script for the Bone Reaper's Hook.....
and it begins to show true and you never read the book from the special summon you can still go to ICC and obtain the hidden skin. I found this out because I was doing a Karazhan speed run for Nightbane and hadn't realized I missed it. I searched the whole instance but never found the book. I put in a ticket but of course GM's told me they had no info on the subject. So today for the heck of it I went into ICC just to check and sure if enough it was there. Couldnt be happier than I am right now. Don't lose hope friends you can still get it whether you missed it or not!
Can confirm the book still can spawn in PG post 7.1. Just got the orc to spawn. I had farmed for roughly five hours the previous night, came back tonight to farm it and got it the first 30 minutes.
I am AK 6, artifact level 11, haven't finished the DK campaign as this is an alt. I did reach 2000 ghouls on the hidden achievement.
Very lucky but kind of an awkward timing, after hitting the Archerus training dummy with Apocalypse for several days with no luck, it finally decided to drop mid-fight Xavius, I was surprised and happy but got a bit distracted, at least I had something to blame my death on.
Been farming this for months and FINALLY it dropped in the Proving ground so it looks like PG still works
After ~8 hours of farming in proving grounds I got it.
The solo szenario isn't hard, I was able to do it with my ilvl 808 dk
spent nearly 12 hours and tired af. still no spawn. im really mad now
Anyone able to still confirm that PG is the best way to do this. I have been farming it for about 9 hours and still now drop. Just wanted to make sure I am not wasting my time... well more than I am already xD
Been farming in PG for 9+ hours. Finally dropped from 8-stack apoc, used to kill some alliance guy near the ToV raid entrance. I guess the best way to farm this is to just use apoc as many times as possible during normal play.
No confirms in a while, leads me to believe they canned the proving grounds cheese trick. If this 2k ghouls BS is true, I finished that within an hour. I was summoning 8 ghouls every 10 seconds for a couple hours.
However, if the proving grounds method still works...heres an efficient way of summoning:
1. Enter any PG mode
2. Right click on NPC
3. Click yield once
4. Summon Army of Dead
5. Click accept yield
You will finish your summoning while stunned. Get this down to super sonic speed and you'll be summoning 100 ghouls every 2 minutes. I had 40ish ghouls alive at all given times lol. Fun to watch them line up to croak. :P
If I get my Hook, best believe I will edit to confirm it!
Just got the book in the Proving Grounds so YES it still works guys dont get dissapointed (Game version 7.1.0 (23222) ) .
Yesterday for 5 hours straight , today 6 hours straight took a break for coffee and started again and after 30' the orc appeared :)
Used the classic method for Proving grounds based on the guide below:
Thanks for the guide and everybody trying to do this keep up it will appear eventually :)
Spent about 9 hours in PG and finally got the Orc to spawn, I was going so fast with the macro I missed the orc spawning but the book stayed on the ground and the quest macro (/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(44188)) popped up to true. Off to get my hidden appearance now!
Book spawning in PG today.
can confirm drop on PG on
2000 ghouls achiev done long-long ago (farmed more then 10 hours in summ)
hit 110 a few days ago, used the new AK deal to put my knowledge lvl at 20 thanks to my ak25 demon hunter. ever since then i have done well over 1k apoc casts and about half that in army of the dead casts, both in proving grounds and have not gotten the orc spawn or any spawn dropping a book for that matter. im starting to think that PG doesnt work for the unholy hidden appearance anymore. that or im just really unlucky. has anyone gotten it in pg in the last few days?
I can confirm that the orc can still spawn in Proving Grounds, during 7.1.5.
Had it spawn for me today, the 24th of January, after 11 hours.
Got it in PG, stay strong was doing pg for about 3 hours every day and started when patch 7.1.5 came live.

Ok guys, i didnt find a post with this tip, so ill post it myself. If its a repost or something, my bad.
One thing you can do to get it, is unlocking one of the different colors from your hidden appearance with another spec.
I didi with 2 chars and works
I would recomend equiping the hidden appearance from blood/frost and grind honor kills in AV. if the game starts turtling (usually), youll get 150+ kills per run. at 1000 you´ll unlock the fourth tint for that artifac and also for the OTHER TWO specs (1/3 for dh n druid).
It doesnt unlock the original color, but if you are just going for the look of the hook and got tired of PG or whatever, this is a way to get it.
Just letting everyone know that the Proving Grounds way of getting this skin is still working, got it today (9th February) after a long 18 Hours!
Just randomly dropped for me today in Uldar 10N. Surprised me!
Worst hidden event ever! I have literally managed to obtain about 85% of the hidden appearances on all toons and all specs and spent less time doing that than waiting for this to proc on my main. I'm terribly disappointed in Blizzard for this one. Hell, my time spent includes the Ret Pally event and multiple Withered scenarios; still no UH proc. How did this RNG % requirement get past their review committee?
Do you need to still get festering wounds to 8 stacks then use Apocolypse or anything over 6 stacks good since the ability only bursts 6 wounds now?
Hey everyone, as this is one of the more complicated hiddens...I thought I'd share about the addon I use to track for appearance progress and hidden stuff!
This addon, Hiddden Artifact Tracker, actually can actively per weapon track this stuff!
And if you hover on the weapon, it's in the tooltip.
1. your main ghoul//abom doesn't count as ghouls summoned! so don't bother spamming dismiss and readd!
2. you'll find it handily trascking your AotD and apocolypse tracking.
3. SUPERZOMBIES COUNT! :D
4. making ghoul elite = doesn't couint
5. valk'yrie doesn't count. gargoyle is unlikely to as well.
This thing is brutal. I never thought I'd say this but I am finally a proud owner of
! I can confrim this still drops in Proving Grounds as of 3/11/2017. At the bottom I will attach pics.
Its hard to put a number on how many hours I spent farming this appearance because I would spend a few hours here, an hour there, maybe 30 min some days. I'd say at least 12 hours were spent in Proving Grounds...not to mention the regular/day to day content I've put into my DK.
My advice to you is just to take it slow, you will keep your sanity that way. When I spent hours farming at a time, I was questioning why I pay for this game lol. It is funny how things work, though. I decided to take it slow and run only 20 PG trials a day(about 10min of farming). Low and behold, the second day it dropped on the 13th trial. Dont give up, good luck all!
BTW: When I went into Icecrown Citadel for my hook, I also got
:D (dont worry...ive been farming this for a LONG time)
Book on floor:
Can anyone confirm if this still procs in PG in March (after the max 6 stack Apocalypse nerf)? I've been at it for a total of 30 hours spamming the army-apo macros and all I see are those darned "false" messages. I have AK23 so that shouldn't be a problem. I want to get it before 7.2 hits in two days since it might get "fixed" then but I'm starting to get really bored of this.
As of 7.2, you can still obtain this appearance via the proving grounds methods listed here. Just in case you were losing hope and wondering if it was stealth hotfixed.
I posted a reply to the top rated post by Leviatharan. I can confirm that you can also get Professor Putricide's Lost Journal from one or all of the following:
Raise Dead(Sludge Belcher)
The Shambler(Artifact Ability)
All Will Serve(Talent)
I have those three abilities and they were used during a fight that dropped the book for me. I did not cast Army of the Dead or Apocalype at any time during the fight. I will be posting a screenshot to show that neither of those two spells are on cooldown.
Here to confirm this can still be obtained in Proving Grounds as of 7.2, 4/14/2017. Appears Blizzard doesn't intend on changing this.
For some (possible) clarification, I stood in proving grounds, restarting over and over, summoning well over a thousand ghouls via army of the dead, nothing happened. went outside to acherus, used Apocalypse about three or four times on a training dummy, the guy spawned and I got the book. I think it's pretty safe to say that this
spawns only from Apocalypse and not AOTD. But that's my 2 cents anyway.
I looted this today, 4/20/17, as I was rotating Apocalypse and Army of the Dead cooldowns on a target dummy in Acherus: The Ebon Hold (it procced on Apocalypse not Army of the Dead, so the rumor continues). I had the Glyph of Foul Menagerie on, so it does not affect the spawn of the special Army of the Dead Orc. He did
speak, but he did spawn the special book when he was summoned.
Upon reading the book, the player learns of a secret trap door in Professor Putricide's lab in Icecrown Citadel that leads to his latest creation, Stitchwork.
Summoning the special Army of the Dead NPC grants access to the trap door,
reading the book! Do not worry about clicking the book.
The player then travels to Icecrown Citadel and clears the way to Professor Putricide's lab to access the trap door. I had already cleared ICC on 25H but the door was still accessible. Players may or may not need to kill Putricide before delving down into the trap door, or may or may not need to clear the entirety of the raid first.
Upon descending down past the trap door, the player finds him or herself in a secret room full of undead. Across a chasm there waits Stitchwork. The player must run down into the chasm and run through a tunnel to reach Stitchwork. The chasm and tunnel are full of ghouls and geists, but are easily slain.
After the player reaches and subsequently slays Stitchwork, he drops the The Bonereaper's Hook which when used grants the player with the hidden Unholy Artifact Appearance. Stitchwork is not difficult to fight, and players can loot the item no matter what their specialization is nor what their loot specialization is set to (I slayed Stitchwork as Blood with my loot spec set to Blood). Players do, however, have to be in the Unholy specialization to use the item.
Me and my Bf both got the book that allow you to recieve the appearance the same way. PVP battleground we each killed an Orc DK 8 stacks wounds then cast Apocalypse with it being the killing blow then the orc zombie spawned talked, died dropped a book that u can click. Not sure if it was because he was an orc dk or because he was an orc but I feel 8 stacks + Apoc landing a killing blow on him triggered it but it happened for us both same BG same Orc DK. IF you don't want to farm casts for hours a day, try this method.
Just got in Proving Grounds from Apocalypse proc. (20 April 2017)
if you are looking for a cool human DK set with this weapon then look at mine.
I think the journal dropped for me while I was in heroic Vault of the Wardens on the final boss. I took a picture with the print screen button, but I'm not too technologically savvy to know how to upload it. I'll post more details as they appear to me.
Edit: Ok, yes the journal did drop, and I used the macro to confirm that the area trigger is working. So I headed to Icecrown Citadel and found the trapdoor. Once again, I took numerous pictures, but I don't yet know how to upload them.
2nd Edit: Ok, so I finally got the Bonereaper's Hook! Stitchwork turned out to be an incredibly challenging boss, for someone with an ilvl below 800. Earlier, I told Hellscream to take a hike, but then later, he came back after I died to Stitchwork three times. At this point, his buff really came in handy.
Notes about the instance: The mobs respawn incredibly quickly! They mostly drop broken bones and the like, and it is entirely possible to get mobbed by geists and ghouls and murdered to death.
- Like someone before me mentioned, I'd highly suggest using the Control Undead spell on Biletongue, later on in the instance. Doing so will make your later experience against Stitchwork much more worthwhile, as you can use him to tank Stitchwork.
- This is a sub-point to my above point. When you first enter the instance, you'll be met with an enemy attacking you. I don't know what his model is called, so I'll just call him Grobbulus. Grobbulus is special for the instance, as I also used Control Undead to use him to tank some of the geists and ghouls in my way, up until Biletongue. Unfortunately, Biletongue is much stronger than he is, so while they're battling, you should take the time to whip out your Control Undead spell on Biletongue.
- So aside from the Bonereaper's Hook, Stitchwork does not drop anything. If you loot him once, and then kill him a second time, nothing will drop.
- Interesting sub-point. After killing Stitchwork, I was wondering if it'd be possible to control him, and oh my god you can! It was just so amazing to just send him out to kill the endless numbers of ghouls and geists in the crypts below! It was an endless amount of fun and I totally suggest anyone who hasn't gone here yet should try doing so!
- When you leave the second teleporter, you come out on the side of Putricide's lab where the giant orange contraption/potion is, whereas the initial entryway was below the green contraption/potion.
3rd Edit: Pictures! I have one of just about everything.
4th Edit: In terms of making things easier to see/read, I turned my collection of images into an album. Now view at your leisure!
5th Edit: With regards to my second edit, I can confirm that the NPC that I call "Grobbulus" is actually called "Bloatstench." I'm not editing it in for historical purposes, but I just wanted to clarify that.
6th Edit: Please, ask questions if you want clarification on something. For example, I did
get the hidden achievement beforehand which shows that I summoned 2000 ghouls. It was just on the circumstances that I showed above. I looted Stitchwork with my unholy spec, and was capable of entering the instance multiple times until I finally got the hook. Then, the teleporter disappeared.
I found this in ICC heroic 25 man. after killing professor putricide I found a teleport ring on the side of the room and took it back thinking it would take me out. It took me to a secret area full of 110 undead mobs. I will try and submit a screenshot of Stitchwork, but killed him and it dropped for me. I was trying to do the Scared and the corrupt quest at the time.
Alright lads. Good News.
I have confirmed that the orc guy doesn't come from army of the dead. Only apocalypse.
You do not need to read the book.
PG still works.
Need at least AL of 6
Macros i used
/target Trial Master Rotun
Basically just click on the guy then spam this macro to start. Every time it checks to see if you have got the orc or not. If it says true then you have if it says false then not yet.
When you wanna restart click on the guy again and spam this macro to end.
You have to wait for the stun to end then you can start again.
*personal opinion, don''t grind lads, just play the game it's more fun that way.
I hope this cleared all the doubts.
Good luck lads and never give up
I got it to spawn while fighting a World Boss but never got a chance to read the book. Do I need to read the book in order to get into the instance area in ICC?
adding a comment here aswell.. Confirmed 26.05.2017 Earthen Ring (EU) realm 18:30 realm time dropped for me in the proving grounds after arround 30-35 runs with apocalypse ability alone with challenge mode silver also adding a ss. For me an orc spawned and after a few seconds he died along the other ghouls and the book spawned on the ground the name of the orc was still Army Of The Dead wearing blue tier 9 set (if not mistaken) so good luck to all you Unholy DK's out there.
Got it just now from Proving Grounds and it was from an Apocalypse cast.
I got the Book from using Apocalypse only . I was doing a WQ pvp in Stormheim today and the book just popped up. Wasn't expecting a huge @ss table book . So Blizz must of changed it so it drops on any Ghoul that despawns!
got it today from the proving grounds after casting apocalypse, was reseting for like 30min
I completely missed it when it happened, though I did see the orc. It was only after the macro returned true, a couple of quests later, that I retraced my steps. The book was still there, so it stays around for at least 15 minutes.
Took me about 4-5 tries to get the orc to spawn in PG, I used the Bonereaper's Hook for Dummies guide and it worked perfectly. I'm also 98% sure he was summoned from using Army of the Dead because when I used the Apocalypse macro it yielded false but when I used the Army of the Dead macro it yielded true.
I had also done ICC H25 earlier for the Frost appearance (with no luck) and was able to go back in, use the trap door, and get the appearance. Very easy fight and I high-tailed it out as soon as I got the drop.
Proving grounds method confirmed still working in 7.3 (Argus patch). Thanks for the information!
Still spawns in proving ground (7.3), got it after ~3 mins using the macro given in one of the posts here
Just logged in here for the first time in years. Anyway, just wanted to say the Proving grounds method still works in 7.3.
Took me about 15mins of resets.
I'm a fresh 110 with 52 traits. I had to take off pretty much all of my unsullied (880) gear for this otherwise the dude would die too fast.
Basically used same method as VegetaEU said. Also used the apocalypse macro from Leviatharan.
1. Talk to Rotan
2. Pick Damage Bronze
3. Use VegetaEU macro (casts army) immediately
4. Wait for all runes to come off cd
5. Spam FS 3 times and you should have 8 stacks
6. Apoc macro (spam it multiple times til the apoc ghoul summon animation is complete and watch chat for a 'true')
7. If you only see false, go back to panda and select "I yield"
I had a weird bug occurring to me. Once I got the NPC, and book, to spawn, I headed to ICC, 25heroic, killed first 2 bosses, but when I got up to the Zeppelin, it wasn't there. I had to go out, reset instances, then back in to make it spawn, and continue the raid.
This can still be done even if you've cleared ICC for the week, the trap door will show up on the right side of the room.
Got it in Proving Grounds after farming for around 3 hours. I believe it was Apocalypse that spawned the orc, but I was also spamming Army of the Dead all the time as well.
Started grinding for this and after about 35 to 40 minutes decided it isn't worth it.
Was doing Alterac Valley pvp and saw the book on the floor after a big fight. Pasted the macro in to check, and yep, was lucky enough to randomly get it. Was definitely from using Apocalypse btw.
So, I have been farming it for a few months now, and it has never dropped. I'm doing the PG method, and I never saw a skeleton spawn.
Problem is... I tried this.
And it said True.
I've no idea WHEN that happened, or where, but it was not while I was farming it if it ever happened.
Question is... Is it gone forever? Or will it still have a chance of dropping?
Last time I farmed and got nowhere, I asked a GM and they basically tole me they would not help with hidden appearances. So I'm boned on that one.
I'm almost positive that the PG Method
works for farming this artifact appearance. Couldn't find anything about it for 7.3.2 so I'll post my experience.
I decided to farm PG since that's what people said would have worked, and with the quick luck that people had been getting from 7.3, plus knowing that hidden appearance drop chances has been raised, I figured it would only take about 30 minutes. Boy was I wrong; I farmed it for probably 6 hours one night and then 3 more hours the next morning with no luck. Finally I gave up and decided to go check my dps on the training dummy and
, spawned for me after my
Apoc (with 6 stacks). I read of other accounts where people were getting it from training dummy over PG but no confirmations that it was literally impossible to receive in PG anymore.
You can still go try and farm it in PG (like I said, I did it for 9 hours so maybe that helped my luck and I would have gotten it if I did it a few more times), but I suggest going and hitting the training dummy for 30 minutes first before doing Proving Grounds, just in case!
PG still works in 7.3 :>
The book dropped from
artifact trait proc after auto-attacking the malformed raid dummy in the class hall for about an hour.
Who said laziness was always a bad thing huh?
I was just too lazy to spam PG the whole time after reading that people lost their mind and time in it :D
for 2h in Archerus and spammed once in a while Apocalypse or Army. I recommend this method (: Just do some other stuff in the meantime.
I dont know much about this since Im a holy priest but my friend just got it when we were running ICC for the glory achievement. He was saying something about a quest which he did not have. He said "i saw the trap door so I just walked in and tried even though I dont have the quest." Hope this helps.
EDIT: I have since boosted a DK and looked a guide myself, instead of relying on what my friend told me. So its a book that drops when you randomly spawn and Orc instead of a ghoul with Apocalypse. I boosted a DK and was doing ToS LFR to get it geared. After killing Mistress, as soon as I clicked "leave instance group" I noticed a glowing square on the ground around but it was too late. It was in that split second I left.
Went straight to ICC and boom trap door was there. It was the journal the Orc drops! This confirms that you
have to read/click on it, since I did not. So Im guessing this is what happened to my friend. He must have had the Orc spawn some time while doing world quests, raiding, ect and never noticed. I sure didnt mid fight. If I hadnt randomly turned around before I left the instance I would have never known it dropped. He almost never runs old raids so it totally makes sense why he would never bother to check ICC to see if the trap door was there.
If you are still looking it for just give it a shot and take a trip to ICC. Maybe the trap door will be there! Good luck!
EDIT 2: Almost 2 years later, instead of leveling and xfering my original DK, I boosted another. I was running a Mists key and used army on the first pull and the book dropped on the new DK. Since this is in Shadowlands I ofc wasnt using the artifact but I did have it transmogged. I dont see how that helps since I already unlocked it on my previous DK and was able to mog it on the new one but thought I'd update this anyways.
The macros and Proving Grounds still works. Took me an hour to get the orc summoned. The ICC part was easy and had a very nice atmosphere.
I think the concept and idea are cool, it is just not that fun to get started imo.
Thank you all for your contributions and help to get me this nice hook :)
So i decided it was time to farm the challenge and hidden artifact skins for all my class/specs before BFA. this has taken the longest to get by far due to the RNG. the quickest way to farm this is by doing the proven ground method i also made a couple macros to help speed up the process
proven ground method:
this 1st macro will start the trail for you then spawn army of the dead. After the 1st time doing the trail you will need to use the macro twice in order to start the event and spawn AoTD due skills not being reset until after the event starts, the macro also has a checker, where it will print false if the book hasn't dropped yet and true for when the book does drop
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
if you haven't done any the trials then the macro above will be fine, if like myself you have done all three the damage ones then you will need to change the 2nd line /script SelectGossipOption(2); to /script SelectGossipOption(4); the (4) basically referees to the line in which the bronze tank trail is on
the second macro will grip the mob to you taunt it then cycle through Festering strike multiple times, before using apocalypse, you could delete one of the festering strike so you only use the spell twice but since the mob can take a fair bit of damage i decided to go with 3 to ensure i got the max number of ghouls every time. Again you will need use the macro several times in order for it to skill through all the skills.
/castsequence Death Grip, Dark Command, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Apocalypse
you can then stop and reset and start the trial as soon as you have used Apocalypse, you dont have to kill the mob.
Dropped for me in about 6 pulls in proving grounds. No macros, just army + apocalypse. Good times.
Still working, got mine after 3 hours of PG spam with the macro. Little tip don't 'overgear' since the mob won't stay alive long enough for the Apocalypse to hit. Around 900ish iLvl max seemed the best
As of today it is still possible to farm this using the Proving Grounds.
Confirmed to still drop in Proving Grounds after 8.0.1
After patch 8.0 you no longer need to spend time waiting for a special ghoul to spawn, if you go to icecrown( not sure if dificulty matters, i did it in hc25) the trapdoor in Putricide´s lab is there and you can go in and get the appearance
Was able to acquire today while World Questing in
using this macro:
How does getting this work after the pre patch? Do we just have to be lucky while casting Apocalypse or do we need to wield the artifact while doing so?
Basicaly enter the PG, choose tank challenge, grip and stun the mob, use festering twice and apocalypse before reseting
Apparently this is obtainable without actively using Apocalypse. I was questing in Nazmir and had Putricide's journal appear on the floor. I did not have Apocalypse equipped and was level 111 at the time. Just want to make sure everybody knows you are currently able unlock the hidden appearance without having to use the lower level weapon while questing during BFA. However, I DID have apocalypse in my inventory. Not sure if that's required or not.
Anyone gets the hidden skin with 8.0 (and 8.1) ? I try to cast as often as possible my Army of the Dead and still no loot.
HELLO FELLOW DEATH KNIGHTS WHO ARE TRYING TO DO THIS IN BFA
I spent a lot of time on forums trying to figure out the specifics of how to acquire this and trigger the Orc undead spawn, and of course had a lot of questions about what specifically does or doesn't work now that artifact weapons are retired. There are tons of rumors going around, a lot of them weren't helpful or were merely speculative, even this long after the end of Legion, but I want to share what I did to get this, in hopes that it helps someone else.
So I used this macro to test whether or not the hidden requirement had already been completed:
Now, when I used it, I expected it to come up false; but it came up true. If you use the macro on your character and it comes up false, as far as I know you may still need to spawn the special orc. In my case, it came up as true but I don't remember ever encountering this orc ghoul from Army of the Dead or from Apocalypse.
If you use it and it comes up true, then you might have some other questions like "do I need the journal? do I need to wait for it to spawn a second time? did I miss my chance?" The answer is no. Just go to ICC and the teleporter should be usable by you when you get to Professor Putricide. Now of course this still left me with the question, "Did I merely summon the orc at some point in the past without realizing it, or does blizzard just default make it available to everybody now since it's old content and artifact weapons don't matter anymore?" If anyone can answer that, it will be helpful for others going forward. I know this isn't helpful if you're still trying to spawn the guy, but hopefully this helps someone. Have a nice day!
2/16/2019: I completed this today, using the Proving Grounds method. It does still work. I equipped Apocalypse, just in case. I used the script to check my progress, but I never actually saw the Orc Death Knight appear in my summons.
I just started the Tank challenge, used Army of the Dead as the challenge started. As soon as the first ripper appeared, I taunted him over to me, hit Fester Strike to get enough energy to fire Apocalypse, and killed it. As soon as it died, I turned to the pandaren and reset the challenge. After about a dozen resets or so, the Journal appeared on the ground. I never saw the orc, and never saw the purple summon tendril.
One of my azerite pieces summons a mage as part of the Army and Apocalypse, but didn't actually see the DK.
Can confirm as of patch 8.1.5, PG method still works. Good luck!
Can confirm as of 8.1.5 that the proving ground method still works.
I started farming this on a freshly boosted toon, still within the 24 hour legacy lock (I did not know if this could have any affect on the drop)
It took me roughly 1 hour before I spawned the orc. I also had Apocalypse equipped just in case.
As of 8.2 on 8/2/2019 the proving grounds method still works. It took me 1 3/4 hours to 2 hours to finally get the book to drop. The Orc you summon is a DK orc it has armor and a cloak so he is unmistakable when you see him. I summoned him off of Apocalypses.
Strategy I used, removed all armor to get 2-3 Festering Strikes on the target at 120 the cast Apocalypses.
Use Apocalypses the relic weapon, not your 120 weapon.
Use VegetaEU's macro from his post, thank you VegetaEU.
Create a macro:
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
Click the panda, click the macro twice, once to start scenario and once to cast Army of the Dead, move to the center of room to spawning target, festering strike 2 time you will get 4-5 wounds, Apocalypses only summons 4 ghouls in 8.2, run back to the panda click him click macro again to end phase, rise and repeat, You can use the dps or tank scenarios. The Orc spawned on the tank scenario after 3 attempts and after using the dps scenario for close to 2 hours.
Just a heads up, not sure if this is in here, but you have to be wielding Apocalypse to make this happen. Didn't have it at first, changed to it and it popped about 3 minutes later.
For 3 hours, nothing.. I'm not main'd for DK, so I wouldn't know too much about it, especially Unholy. Wowhead comment was not clear and all that. But after adjustment and learning curves.. It finally drop within 15 minutes.
When folks said
, it means TALENT, not the actual weapon,
How it's done? Just go to Proving Ground (I use Garrison method, talking to NPC at table to start it). Once in, go to approx 48.0 80.9 (max distance from
, just enough for interactive dialog to be interactive and to be in the range for
. With this macro, it will select "Tank"
Using this macro (2 parts):
/cast Army of the Dead
/tar Large Illus
/cast Dark Command
/castsequence Death Grip, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Apocalypse
What this does:
Macro 1 will do 2 things (when starting and ending the battle), also will summon
as soon you start the dialog. And will check if you got the special summon (in case you overlooked).
Macro 2 will automatically target
(pull to you) then does
2 things to know:
1. You don't have to kill
have a chance to spawn
(it's not an actual quest but you will see dialog "Army of the Dead says: Why have I been brought back to fight for you?")
is not summoned, reset the Proving Ground and repeat/rinse until you do. All the spells (EXCEPT for Death Grip will have their CD reset)
Hi everyone, the orc and the book spawn today for me in a 110/120 dungeon. I wasn't farming it at all. I had my standard weapon equipped and Apocalypse was in my bank so it's not a must to have it in your bag. Good luck.
I'd like to confirm that now, during the final bit of BfA, I have been successful in spawning the required minion using Apocalypse as a level 115 Unholy DK.
I was doing the A Falling Star for Kadgar un suramar when it dropped. I had Apocalypse weapon equipped and killed the sea giant with some overkill apocalypse ability usage when the required minion spawned and Professor Putricide's Lost Journal dropped.
death knighting :)
Can confirm, 112 DK in proving grounds just repeated the bronze tank challenge. Did both army of dead and 4 apocalypse, but not sure what the summon came off of.
I got this yesterday, so I'll throw my lot in as a Frost DK that's trying to get the Blood/Unholy artifact appearances for 2h Frost come Shadowlands.
For some background, I haven't played my DK since Cataclysm, so all the Legion content I'm doing at 120 is without any previous exposure/progress on the Legion systems.
I was completely naked apart from my weapon. I was using Apocalypse. I have Glyph of the Foul Menagerie applied, so that doesn't affect anything.
I did the Proving Grounds method (the bronze tank challenge). I only used the first macro in
's post, to start the challenge and cast AotD while also running the quest ID script.
After AotD finished casting, I ran to the mob, hit it with festering strikes until the mob had 6 stacks, then I used the 'Apocalypse' ability. If the special ghoul didn't spawn, I ran over to Rotund to yield/reset the challenge, and started over.
I did this for about an hour. The special ghoul finally spawned off of Apocalypse, not AotD. It was an orc wearing DK T9. After he expired, the journal spawned where he stood.
I had the journal drop during a heroic BfA dungeon, my weapon is mogged to the artifact weapon but the original artifact is definitely not equipped.
It still drops in 8.3
got bored with not dropping in proving grounds (1+hour resetting and farming) with the macro methods etc and decided to check icc25hc just in case trap door was there by chance .Used apocalypse (weapon+skill) on every boss and book dropped on Festergut boss
Good luck to fellow Dks farming this .
This does indeed drop in Pre-Patch.
So I didn't want to bother with any macros or such but all I did was unlock the Apocalypse artifact weapon, Went to the NPC in Archerus that takes you to the proving grounds and I talked to Trial Master Rotun to begin the bronze tank trial.
After that when the mobs spawns you just festering strike it untill 6 stacks and use Apocalypse (Your ability) I did also use Army of the Dead before every encounter just incase, but some say it wasn't needed.
If you see an orc amongst your gang of undead the book will drop under the healer npc.
If not you just talk to Rotun again to forfeit the battle and start it all over. The CD's reset every time so no need to wait for Apocalypse to come off the cooldown. There is one useful macro if you're just no-braining it to check if he actually appeared or not but otherwise this should be all that you need. After that you head to ICC to search for the trap door to continue the hunt. Refer to the comments here for that part:
I did have the artifact equipped and some gear removed so I didn't burst it too hard. Got it after about 20 minutes, Good luck on it!
Just posting this for Shadowlands, since some stuff changed. The new command to see if the quest is complete is:
Contemplating if Army of the Damned talent in the last tier is breaking this. I've been trying to get this Orc thing to spawn for the last couple of days, each day trying for 1-2 hours. Nothing happened. I figure since this talent adds additional zombies to both AotD and Apocalypse spells, it could've altered the ID for both spells and causing the hidden orc to no longer spawn.
So I switch talents and try again, within 5 minutes the orc spawned and I got it. Perhaps pure RNG but might be worth checking into.
just got it the quest item in chromie time WoD without doing anything for the order hall
Hello fellow Death Knights in the
(and pre-patch) timeline.
After much trial and error I figured out how to do this after the changes that happened to macros when the pre-patch for
hit. Following @couchpotato2013s guide, it clued me into what to look for. Even though the information is outdated, he's still a legend.
If you want to do this without using your mouse, first press Esc and click on
and then scroll down to "
Interact With Target
" and bind it to whichever key you find most comfortable. I chose the button left of 1 on my keyboard.
Next create these 2 macros:
Trial Start and Reset Macro
/target Trial Master Rotun
/cast Army of the Dead
Cast Sequence Apocalypse Macro
/castsequence reset=target/combat/ Death Grip, Dark Command, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Festering Strike, Apocalypse()
And here's what you do. Just as an example:
I put the "
Interact With Target
" button on the key left of 1 (which is
on my keyboard).
I put the
Trial Start and Reset Macro
And finally the
Cast Sequence Apocalypse Macro
Go and find
Trial Master Rotun
in Kun-lai Summit up north in Pandaria.
Do the following rotation:
1 1 1
-> Wait for RP to end and mob to spawn (about 10 sec) -> Spam
until Apocalypse is cast ->
To explain what happens here in order.
Trial Master Rotun
Interact with NPC
Select Option 2 (tank trial) -
Cast Army of the Dead
- Check if hidden objective is flagged as true or false
Target, grip, taunt and wail on the enemy until Apocalypse is cast
Trial Master Rotun
Interact with NPC again
When you forfeit the trial it'll stun you and whatever minions you have out for a few seconds, and then you can repeat the rotation without having to leave/reload the instance.
As @couchpotato2013 mentioned, your chat will be spammed with
until the undead orc spawns and poops out a book you can interact with, then it will return
. You don't need to interact with it in order to progress to the last step, which is to go into
and make your way into the raid until the boss
There you will be able to find a
small trap door
which takes you into another area. Progress through it until you meet an abomination (I forgot its name) and then murder it. GZ EZ you now have the hidden artifact appearance
A more basic version of everyone's guide:
Make sure the abilities; Festering Strike, Apocalypse and Army of the Dead are on your action bar
Go to the proving grounds and start a bronze damage trial
Before the first wave spawns, cast army of the dead, then hit the enemy with a few festering strikes.
Hit it with Apocalypse, which will spawn more AotD ghouls based on the Festering Wounds you gave it
If you didn't get the special Army of the Dead NPC, yield the challenge then restart it (you'll get your cooldowns reset)
Rinse and repeat until you get the book, or jump off a bridge
Once you have the book go to ICC, Putricide's lab, go through the telporter, fight the dude, get the hook, Cry on both the inside AND the outside because this entire process is horrible.
I'm not sure if I got super lucky or they have changed this with 9.0. I went into 10man H ICC worked my way to Professor Putricide's room and the trap door was there. Went in with the legion Apocalypse weapon equipped, killed Stickwork npc and it dropped the hidden appearance.
Finally got this. Looks really nice on a Night Elf actually, not sure if intentional or just me.. but the end of the weapon really looks like that NE moon symbol. And overall it just really fits the colors of the darkshore warfront plate gear.
Just to confirm, I'm level 53 leveling in Shadowlands and got the magic orc with the book by casting Apocolypse. It's still possible to receive this.
I was just farming my weekly Shadowfrost shards for Shadowmourne when I happened to look over before I killed Putricide and saw a clickable floor icon. I had vaguely read through this guide, but never put any effort into spawning the orc. I hadn't spoken with or gotten a quest item, but managed to pick this up tonight. So I can confirm as of 1/26/21 in Shadowlands, this is still active.
EDIT: I got the achievement for getting the hidden artifact appearance, but for some reason I couldn't find it in my collections or transmog NPC. Relogging brought it up. Just in case anyone else runs into this issue.
Finally got this myself in 9.0 after understanding
First, enter the Proving Grounds. Speak to Trial Master Rotun (the panda). Choose 1 bronze damage trial. Cast
on the first spawned mob. Then run back to the panda. Surrender. Start another bronze damage trial.
Keep repeating these steps until the following macro returns "true":
What this Proving Ground method truly does is that it resets the long cooldown of
repeatedly, allowing you to get
much sooner (<1% drop rate on the AotD ghouls you summoned). It took me 2 hours to get it.
It is not required to actually read the Journal. As long as you see the above macro returns "true", it means that the Journal has dropped for you at some point, and you have completed the prerequisite.
Then enter ICC, go to Putricide's Lab 13,48. Click the Trap Door. Inside the cave, follow the path to the west. Kill Stitchwork. Loot
from him. Hooray!
Just popping in to confirm it can still drop in Shadowlands. I got the drop off of Apocalypse in Torghast. So it seems it can drop even in new expansion instances.
Confirmed, still obtainable. Got mine half a month to a month ago. After 2 days of spamming
dropped when I was doing a world quest in Vol'dun.
You don't need to have the artifact equipped in order for the item to drop.
I had a Castle Nathria sword equipped when it dropped.
It still drops, just got it today, off a training dummy in Ebon Hold. Artifact weapon was NOT equipped. I am
certain it came from using
Army of the Dead
, Apocalypse was still on cooldown and I had macro from comments below which said True as soon as army started spawning.
I was camping a rare and remembered I never got this, so I took out a training dummy toy and just used Apocalypse whenever and Army of the Dead once before toy despawned. Then I decided to get serious about it, summoned death gate and went to Ebon Hold training dummies.
I used Festering Strike 3 times, once I had 6 wounds I used Apocalypse - which summons an extra member of your Army of the Dead for each burst Festering Wound and then spammed Death Coil - I have the army of the dead talent as well, so each Death Coil decreases cooldown of Apocalypse by 1 second and Army of the Dead by 5 - it does add up quite a bit, almost halving the cooldown. By the time I had used Army of the Dead a third time, the book spawned. I had so many minions around, that I couldn't even see the orc dude, but book shows on minimap and is also quite big. It took maybe 20ish minutes in all.
I had tried the proving grounds method once before, for maybe half an hour, but I found it mind-numbingly boring for some reason. This was an alternative I could stick to for the 30 minutes between the rare spawning, since death gate brings you back to the exact camping spot, no extra hassle.
Good luck all !
