Gem chips are a new flavour item in Legion, yielded from prospecting, a skill usable by Jewelcrafters, and milling, used by Scribes. They are used as a reagent in cooking for one dish -
(only the non-coloured version -
When prospecting ore, a gem chip of a certain colour that appears in your Prospecting window will predict the
next gem that you will obtain
via prospecting, which can be quite helpful! As per the devs during the Legion Profession Q & A (
), you can prospect lower quality ore until you get the gem chip you want (e.g.
if you are gunning for
) and then you can switch to higher quality ore to obtain the rarer gem of that colour.
When milling, only the non-coloured version (
) will be produced.
Note that the coloured version of each Gem Chip will only be seen in your prospecting window - the chips in your bags will be generic
That being said, it appears the coloured versions can be found in your
shoulder enchant - these coloured versions are truly useless and cannot be used for cooking, and it is likely unintended that they should be lootable! The only reason to hold on to them would be on the off-chance that a future patch converts them to the useful, colourless version.
As such, make sure when purchasing on the Auction House to get the
(colourless) versions for cooking.
, the more common ore, yields
uncommon (green quality) gems when prospected (with the occasional rare gem), and
more commonly yields rare (blue quality) gems.
With this in mind, you can prospect
until you get the gem chip colour that you want, and then prospect
to get the rare gem of that colour.
The gem chips you can obtain are listed below. In addition, the "Legion Gems" column lists the gems that correspond with the appropriate colour.
This will be the item that ends up in your bags after prospecting
So, in other words... After you have been seeing the color of the "next gem". The chips are worthless and you can be selling them, if you don't wanna to do that cooking recipie? To bad that the chips doesn't have more value than that :(
I bought some Gem Chips on AH to make buff food and it turned out i got the red and yellow variety instead of the colorless ones needed for the recipe. Is this intended or some kind of bug?
Cooking recipe ONLY USES WHITE gem chips. The rest are useless.
It bothers me that these aren't considered a "crafting reagent". I'd like to be able to put these in my reagent bank with the rest of my cooking mats. Edit: At the time of writing this they were not considered "crafting reagents", this was later changed.
That is some old info I guess, because I only get colorless gem chips.
I have no idea what to do with then.
Gem chips are used in high level +375 secondary stat food, such as Nightborn Delicacy Platter.
Wait, so, the bulk of the material I get by prospecting is completely useless for jewelcrafters? Lame.
Since patch 7.1, this now can be placed in the Reagent Bank.
Mass-milling 200 Aethril only provided me with 2 gem chips. Nightborne Delicacy Platter needs 20 gem chips for each batch.. so prepare your farming hat.
I have a bunch of varying color gem chips from the shoulder enchant bags. I know 7.1 changed a few things with regards to the white/silver chips now officially crafting reagents... but what about the others? Are they just vendor trash?
I just want to point out this ONLY applies to the white gem chips.
All coloured gem chips outside of white are NOT used for food and if someone finds out what they are useful for other than taking up bag space please enlighten me.
I really wish these would be added to the blood trader. We can buy everything else cooking related from her.
These are now used by jewelcrafters to create ilevel 885 crowns (head armor). Sell them on the AH in stacks of 25, the quantity needed to make one crown at rank one difficulty.
Safe to vend.
Prospected from Felslate and Leystone also.
