Here we go again....
These are the drops needed for
. As currently designed in the PTR you only need 12 to complete the quest.
It can be so that it will actually stay 12. If I recall correctly, the final quest for the Legendary Cloak didn't need a lot of farming either. (Like 5 days worth of timeless coins).
And here I was hoping to never see
a titan runestone
variation again. Most likely these will again have a <20% droprate from bosses, meaning that the less fortunate people will again wait for it 6-7 weeks long....
"We need to stop Boss Z from destroying the world, of Warcraft! Quickly hero, go kill Boss Z and his lieutenants (X) times to gather the materials I need to empower you to be able to stop Boss Z and his lieutenants! God speed, Hero....." -_-
Based off the number of tomes you need for the quest, these tomes probably have a chance to drop per lockout. Thus making this old school in the manner of pick who you want to have the ring first in your guild. (This is also partly backed by the use on the ring PTR 6.2 as of 4/16/2015)
Does anyone know if these will have a chance to be looted from workorders?
-Turns in Elemental Runes Stones-
Hero: Finally now I'm sure I'll get my ring nex--
Khadgar: But wait theres more!
Hero: Wh-wait what? E-excuse me...?
33 Tome of Chaos. Quickly hero!
Khadgar: It won't take long at all. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
It does not seem these can be obtained from work orders. I was sitting on a pile of rush orders and mats, and have now rushed 400+ work orders. I got 0 tomes.
It appears these are
a guaranteed drop from every boss, unless I experienced a bug. Across 3 kills in HFC I have only received two of these.
Was hoping anyone else might be able to chime in on their experiences with drops of these ? I may just be experiencing a bug, otherwise the drop rate is not 100%.
"A volume of demonic incantations, filled with grotesque illustrations."
And Khadgar emphasize that you must NOT look at it. Especially the picture.
I'm beginning to suspect that this is actually some demonic Kama Sutra. Oh well, I'm sure he only wants us to collect it for...studying purposes.
Confirmed that with 6.2 live, you need 33 of these. They are NOT a 100% drop from HFC bosses. I got 6 boss kills tonight on HFC normal, and have 2 tomes.
All of legendary ring questline has been removed as of the release of Legion on August 31st 2016, you will not be able receive any more
and you can no longer finish any quests you had.
The remainder of this information is purely for archival purposes.
These are the next stage of Khadgar's legendary questline which are only found in
for the quest
for the quest
. They are found in a similar fashion to the previous legendary raid items, with a
~50% chance to drop
apparently ~80% chance to drop as of the pre-patch
per boss per week, on any difficulty in Hellfire Citadel. If you've received loot from a boss in a week, you will not be eligible to receive any legendary items from them from any other difficulty afterwards, a good addon to track your lockouts (including alts) is
. They do
drop from work orders or even character/naval missions.
To start this quest, you need to complete the prerequisite quest
which requires you to have a lvl 3 Garrison with a Shipyard built and the previous legendary quests to free
from Gul'dan's corruption.
you need 33
which you should probably expect to take about 5 weeks to complete with full clears of HFC's 13 bosses, longer with bad luck and as low as 3 weeks with extreme luck. When handed in with the other quests such as
and its accompanying naval missions, you will be be awarded
new garrison monument
and of course your ilvl 735 legendary ring:
Additionally, after you have finished collecting Tomes and own a legendary ring,
once per week from any difficulty
LFR which are used to upgrade your legendary ring 3 ilvls up to a maximum of ilvl 795, which'll take you an extra 20 weeks. Be aware that since you can only get loot eligibility for legendary items once per boss, if you kill Archimonde on the same week you get your ring, you can't kill him again for the
before next week.
It seems you CAN get more than one of these off a boss.
Doing normal Hellfire Assault last night myself and a couple other raiders got 2 from the chest.
It's possible that it was a glitch due to people going crazy on the chest, not sure yet, no one got 2 off the second boss.
You can get
0 or 1 per tome per boss at approximately 60-65% drop rate
A bug existed on first week where on Hellfire Assault you had the chance for 2 tomes, this has been corrected/hotfixed.
Archimonde does not guarantee a drop - it was expected that players complete this step if HFC is cleared each time in 4 weeks on average
33 tomes / 4 weeks = 8.25 tomes~ per week
62%~ drop rate.
Source: Developer 6.2 interview.
got 2 of these from 7 bosses while some of my guildies got more and some got less....yeye this will be fun:(
Finished 13/13 Normal last night (well, technically as the dawn was breaking). Some observations:
Not a 100% chance per boss.
Archimonde is not a guaranteed drop. Based on people's reaction in mumble, it doesn't even have a higher drop chance than a normal boss.
Unlike previous items which dropped the same amount for everyone person in a non LFR raid (e.g. everyone gets a cluster or everyone gets a stone), the chance is variable per person. The drop rate seems to be closer to 50% rather than 30% as most of our group has 6 to 7, with one lucky bastard receiving 10. Note that a 50% drop rate would also bring it more in line with other stages of the legendary which have taken 4 to 6 weeks
Several people have commented on receiving 2 tomes from a single boss; but this may be a bug as not a single person in our raid ever received more than one. It could just be an exceedingly small chance to drop but with almost 300 instances of tomes being looted (13 bosses x 20 to 25 people) across our raid and not a single double tome, it seems highly unlikely to me that two tomes is something that should be occurring.
''They're dangerous, so don't read any of them! Not even the pictures!''
''Especially.... the pictures''
Downed 4 bosses. Got 4 tomes. Compared to previous grinds, I'm liking this...
my previous endeavors with such matters
, I cracked open my spreadsheet again to bring you a handy prediction table of how long it will take you to finish this collection phase.
: It would seem that Blizzard has increased the drop chance of Tomes of Chaos in recent months without notice. Since it would be difficult to determine the changed drop chance with only few people doing the quest now, I resort to leaving this comment unchanged as a memorial of how things were.
Kills: number of boss kills
Chance: probability that you gather 33 Tome of Chaos with
<Kills> number of kills.
Sum: probability that you gather 33 Tome of Chaos with <Kills>
number of kills. This is the sum of all <Chance>-values up to the respective line
Some quick observations:
Getting all 33
in 3 fully cleared IDs
(39 kills) is virtually impossible (7e-6 = 0.0007 %).
4 fully cleared IDs
(52 kills) the chance improves dramatically to
- still quite rare.
less than 87 kills
(99 %) to get your
(didn't fit into this comment).
More realistically, you will
be done in
77 or less kills
You have a 50 % chance to get your tomes within 65 kills.
In the name of tradition, I once again present the table of the dreaded
ID of Fail
where not a single
drops. The less bosses you kill, the more likely it will be, of course:
Kills | Chance of FAIL
13 | 0.5^13 = 0.0001220703125 ≈ 0.01 %
12 | 0.5^12 = 0.000244140625 ≈ 0.02 %
11 | 0.5^11 = 0.00048828125 ≈ 0.05 %
10 | 0.5^10 = 0.0009765625 ≈ 0.10 %
9 | 0.5^9 = 0.001953125 ≈ 0.20 %
8 | 0.5^8 = 0.00390625 ≈ 0.39 %
7 | 0.5^7 = 0.0078125 ≈ 0.78 %
6 | 0.5^6 = 0.015625 ≈ 1.56 %
5 | 0.5^5 = 0.03125 ≈ 3.13 %
4 | 0.5^4 = 0.0625 = 6.25 %
3 | 0.5^3 = 0.125 = 12.5 %
2 | 0.5^2 = 0.25 = 25 %
1 | 0.5^1 = 0.5 = 50 %
0 | 0.5^0 = 1 = 100 % (surprise!)
A neat consequence of a 50 % drop chance is that the above table also shows the chance of you getting a tome from every boss you kill.
I assume these have the same drop % on any difficulty? I know we don't have a Blue confirming any set drop % currently. Just curious if I should be concerned in running LFR early in the week prior to my guild Raid. I just run it for something to do and help make the fights a little easier considering how overly geared I am. Thanks, if anyone has some kind of info to help.
Does anyone know if these survive faction changes? I'm thinking of faction changing but I don't want to have to start all over again with these.
I got 4 tomes in 12 boss from 4 lfr raid , 1 tome every 1 raid. Not bad... ;(
With this luck , I will finish the next expansion.
Finishing your legendary ring on one character does not seem to affect the drop rate for your alts, unlike previous steps of the legendary.
Although it would be hard to verify an increase in drop rate (which could just be luck), at the very least I have verified that the drop rate doesn't increase to 100%.
Is it possible to get these from a bonus roll?
Don't care, will $%^ anyway.
What if i kill a boss in, lets say normal difficulty and he doesnt drop the tome. Do i have a chance for the tome to drop from the
in lfr or heroic or mythic difficulty?
Or if i kill a boss and he doesnt drop it, then all the kills of this boss for this week wont drop the tome?
20 weeks to fully upgrade the Legendary ring...
I guess that I will miss this one for...a year due to school :(
Can these drop if you kill a boss you've already killed in the same week before you picked up the quest? Obviously you won't get any loot from doing so.
Just ran 8 bosses and received 3 tomes. Thats 37.5% drop rate.
Hi good evening, a question if I go to the citadel of hellfire band by the search engine get tomes written about the chaos, I collect new writings on chaos if I go with a custom group without the browser, I get to the writings on the or chaos
God damn the RNG. Needed 8 tomes since last week, 2 resets later and I still need 4. wtf!
After last week's bad luck I figured I was probably good to go and finish this reset.
Did first 6 bosses on hc and got 1 tome, then 6 on lfr and got 1 tome.
Here’s another (hopefully useful) table: the chance of getting a given number of tomes in 13 kills (i.e. one full clear).
This is particularly handy if you’re near the end of the grind and want to check on your odds of finishing this week.
Tomes: number of tome drops
Chance: probability that you gather
<Tomes> Tome of Chaos with 13 kills.
Sum: probability that you gather <Tomes>
Tome of Chaos with 13 of kills. This is the sum of all <Chance>-values up to the respective line
Anybody know if these are now 100% drops in Hellfire Citadel? I came into the day with 19/33 Tomes of Chaos, and I've marathoned 12 LFR bosses (everything but The Black Gate). I've had a Tome of Chaos drop from every single one, and I'm now at 31/33. Either I'm incredibly lucky (which I highly doubt) or they've made these 100% drops after the last set of hotfixes.
I feel like I'm going crazy or have slipped into some alternate dimension in which loot falls from the sky.
EDIT: Archimonde also dropped a tome, so I was 13/13 for the day, and I went from 19/33 to 32/33. Hmmm...
I had 15 of these and I accidentally deleted them. Anyone know what i can do or am I stuck getting them all over again?
Gotta love RNG.... NOT. After going 6/6 on first two wings of HFC, I was down to only needing 2. Went 0/3 on the 4th wing and 1/2 on 2nd and 3rd bosses of 3rd wing. In queue hoping for a fresh run of the 3rd wing and get last tome i need from the 1st boss.
"filled with grotesque illustrations"
Dammit! Khadgar said NOT to look at the pictures!
Khadgar must be making one hell of a profit pawninig all of these off.
These are currently listed on the PTR as upgradable with Valor, which I assume is a mistake (probably just blanket added upgrades to everything which drops in HFC, which these technically do). Either way I wonder what an "upgraded" Tome of Chaos would be like. Perhaps the illustrations are even viler.
Have they increased the drop rate on this? I got 11 on my warrior for the past two weeks, thats a 1% chance two weeks in a row? My luck is not that good.
I would like to add something to this. This week I did lfr to get my times which dropped 8 "3 weeks in a row". Later that evening doing mythic I had a 9th one drop in Hellfire Assault. I had contacted blizzard today about another issue and asked them about this, his comment was the first run is your normal drop rate but there is a chance drop on any other difficulty. So what the % might be I have no idea.... Just thought I'd throw it out there.
Khadgar: Hero get those tomes before Guldan and boss Z do something with them.
Hero: Oh god 33, really?
Khadgar: It won't take long. *Blizzard developers laughing in the background*
Hero: Fine! *Comes back after 3 months*
Hero: I got em!
Khadgar: Good, now give them to Cordana to destroy them.
Hero: -_- *Feels the urge to strangle Khadgar*
with all due respect to the Math Gurus --- 50% seems very unrealistic to me. I've been doing all bosses every week. This week I got one tome. Last week I got one tome. The week before I got two tomes.
I don't think the 50% rate is accurate.
From my experience
You can get
per tome per boss at approximately
Archimonde does not guarantee a drop
32 tomes / 4 weeks = 8 tomes~ per week
~ drop rate.
On my first character, I averaged 8-9 tomes per week, doing all LFR bosses. I didn't raid otherwise at the time.
On my second character, I have so far looted tomes as follows:
First week - 7 tomes, from LFR, after all 13 bosses killed at least once.
Second week - 6 tomes, from LFR, after all 13 bosses killed at least once.
Third week - 13 tomes: 5 from Heroic, 6 from LFR. Every boss dropped a tome on some difficulty this week.
Fourth week - 6 tomes: 4 from LFR, 2 from Heroic, after all 13 bosses killed at least once.
Some players have reported looting a Tome on one difficulty from a boss that didn't drop it earlier that week on another difficulty. I have not seen this happen, despite a number of situations where there would have been the opportunity. So far, I estimate 10+ opportunities for this to happen if it could, 4 of them just this week.
Bored of this nonsense.
Can they drop on a different difficulty if you've already killed the bosses on LFR prior to picking up the quest?
I've been doing this quest in lfr with 2 chars and I got average 6-7 tomes.
So you'll need between 5 and 6 week to complete this quest
And I thought Elemental Tablets were annoying.
The drop rate for these or should I say the RNG like most useful stuff in your game is becoming very repetitive and boring . More RNG in every expansion come on Blizz even it out a bit please !
Seems like, once you've already done these quest and got your ring on one of your character, the drop rates are a lot higher, I did 9 bosses, and got 9 tomes, or i'm just the luckiest man alive
Do the tomes drop ONCE from each Boss per week? Or can you just change difficulties? I've killed like 4 Normal Bosses, and 3 LFR's and I haven't got more after clearing Normal HFC.
13 tomes from 13 bosses in lfr tonight on my mage. Should I buy a lottery ticket now?
did the lfr runs today, again, im still getting only 1 tome/lfr(at best). i already have 18, so only 3 more weeks for me :/
For LFR people, you have to do the raids from Hellbreach to The Black Gate to get these.
I've consolidated information from multiple pages for this list.
As always, please feel free to add anything I may have missed!
Sources are displayed as links.

I didn't see this anywhere, decided to post it myself... If you're queueing for LFR, you need to queue for the following:
Halls of Blood
Bastion of Shadows
The Black Gate
is upgrading Tomes to iLvl 740 by spending Valor Points of any use?
Got 13/13 from my first run today. They may have increased drop rate or I am just insanely lucky.
Is it possible to still receive the tomes if you did not loot a boss but have already recieved a tome from them? Also if you completed an lfr but did not receive a tome from one of the bosses could you do it again to see if the boss would drop it then?
I just got to this stage today. There's no way I'm completing it by Legion launch, is there?
So we are in the last 2 timers.
At start of last week,i had 0 tome. got 7 only that week.
This week i got 13/13.
Does anyone have experienced 100% drop rate this week ?
I will be the next one to report increased drop rate. I have been doing LFR on and off for some time and never had a full drop but this week I am getting tome from each and every goes.
I still have these in my bags, but no quest. The comments say it's been removed from the game, but first off, I still have five Tomes of Chaos that are very much present, and secondly, the achievement for completing the Legendary is still very much in the 'quests' tab and not moved to the FoS tab like unachievable things are.
So...What gives? Does anyone else still have some of these? If you were up to this point in the chain can you finish it off? How?
And if not, can Blizzard *please* remove it from the regular achievements? Having my quest tab (one day, when I finish the Legion stuff) say '279/280' forever would be freaking horrible.
