You comment is somewhat misleading. This particular item drops from the Whelplings in the Badlands and Duskwallow Marsh as shown on the Dropped By Tab.
Yes, there are other types of whelpling drops. Tiny Emerald Whelpling (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8498
) and Tiny Crimson Whelpling (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8499
).
For some reason, this pet seems to usually sell for less than the Tiny Emerald Whelping. This is most likely due to the fact that there's less places to obtain the drop.

I found one of these on my rogue in badlands not too long ago, I grinded for a week at a rate of three hours a day and didnt find any till the seventh day. The drop rate seems lower than that of the crimson and emerald whelplings. If your a leatherworker you will make a lot of gold off of the skins of these guys.

My name is Crimsonius from the terenas realm, I finnally got the dark whelpling pet after 35 hours over a 4 day weekend of farming scalding whelps in the badlands. This amounts to well over 4000 whelps dead. i started this at level 41 and finnally got one right after i leveled to 45. This is from only killing dark whelps. It looks really cool and goes well with what looks like my small army! (Im a hunter.) this pet gives you instant respect from others and is indeed a great conversation starter. I highly recommend hunting for dark whelplings in the badlands if your in the low 40s because in the duskwallow marsh farming can be very frustrating, There are usless searing hatchlings that look just like the searing whelps and lots of other powerfull mobs that loooove to gang up on the unsuspecting farmer!

I got SUPER lucky with one of these little guys. First scalded whelp in the Badlands I killed dropped one. I didn't even know what it was until I checked it out. Makes the perfect pet for my gnome warlock, I say! I had no idea it was so rare though, talk about timing.

This thing took me 3 days to farm... If you plan on farming it, expect to be doing it for a long time. Most beneficial time to do this is around level 39, you'll level pretty fast from farming these things.

I got it last night, wasn't looking for it. An unfortunate whelp was inbetween me and a mithril deposit wich I wanted. He dropped it. If someone wants to buy it, I'll sell it for less then what ppl say, they say 200 gold... that's redicolous, I'm willing to part with it for 100 gold, I'm on Darksorrow, horde side.

The only way to get this is not to farm it, just today i was on my 41 pally, go in lethlor for a quest, have a 70 lock help me out with the two dragons (who btw is farming whelps, then on my way out start killing whelps, guess what drops? my little dark whelpling friend after 4 kills.
Moral of the story, don't try to farm these, it just ends in frustration.
I didn't tell the lock : )

So I decided to go farm for the other two.. yeah right.. farmed for the tiny crimson whelpling for 11 hours before giving up.. what a waste of time.. I'll just buy em from the AH if i ever see them there sometime in the future.. heh

Finally! Took me about 12 hours spread across about 4 days to get this drop... Got it just as my inventory filled up, and I was too tired to play anymore. :P
Dropped from a "Scalding Whelp" in the Badlands, southern area of Lethlor Ravine.
Definitely keeping it after all the trouble I went through... Got about 200g+ in the process of just grinding those whelps endlessly (for skins) and mining Mithril. :D
Good luck to everyone else seeking this obscenely rare drop. :P

There are 5 whelplings in game for now. 4 of them are drop obtained (the last one is from TBC collectors edition).
Let's order them ascending, depending on lvl of mobs that drop the whelpling:
- Crimson Whelpling 24-27 (I have this one)
- Emerald Whelpling 35-36 (hardest to get bacuse of low number of Dreaming Whelps in SoS)
- Dark Whelpling 41-43 (I have this one)
- Azure Whelpling 50-54 elite (I have this one)
But I don't have to say all! Visit
WarcraftPets
to see all of them and lots of other non combat pets (companions).
take care and quick results in farming!

I think that blue post overestimates the rarity of these, as I spent a day farming the whelplings yesterday, i farmed and killed 112 of the assorted dragonkins in azshara yesterday before I finally had one drop for me, took a while largely because of the layout of the camps of dragons.
I farmed 65 whelps in wetlands before a drop, only to have a second one drop about 2 mobs later.
Dark Whelpling dropped for me on the 10th whelp in the badlands, I wouldnt bother with the dustwallow marsh one, its too problematic farming it there, because of wide ranging spawn points.
Still Farming the emerald one at this stage, which is indeed problematic because of the fact that dreaming whelps do not have a static spawn point in SoS, but ill get there :)

I have been farming this pet for 2 hours now. 1 yesterday and 1 today. Its been kinda boring but totally worth it. I've killed the ones in the badlands because of the reasons listed above. So far I have not got the pet but it is still worth the grind.
I have gained roughly 20g off of skins in the AH (messed up economy but oh well)
And about 20 g in other loot.
If you want to get this pet don't hold back. It looks great and the mobs respawn pretty quickly. Do it for fun if anything. Wish me luck!
Edit: just got it today. A lot smaller than I expected but definately worth the grind.

It took me a little over two weeks to farm for this guy. I didn't work constantly on farming him but I'd work a few hours on it every day. When I got him I couldn't believe it and forgot to take the screen shot immediently but I did later on when I got to UC before logging out for school. I have to say, this is one of my most favorite pets of all. He may not do anything special (unless I don't know something) but he was certianly worth it.
Wonderful RP pet btw.**

Got my by pure luck...last year farmed for over 4 hours got 1 searing whelpling, sold for 250. Got this one and hope to sell for 400 gold....but starting price is 50 gold. Hope the demand is as high as it was a year and a half ago.
plus now gold is alot easier to get with dailies and all.

swotam
One way to look at it is like this. You can either spend countless hours farming for this drop, or (assuming you are lvl 70) you can do 25 dailies that will pay you
at least
200g per day and just buy one at the AH. This should take you anywhere from 3-4 hours per day by the time you factor in traveling around the various zones.
Considering that the Wowhead average Buyout price for this item is 400g you should be able to earn enough to buy one within a couple of days, which is probably a lot less time than you will spend farming the mobs that drop it. Personally if I can guarantee myself one without ever having to kill a whelp I think I would prefer that to the alternative.
IMO, it's all about how you choose to invest your playtime. Some people
are
willing to grind endlessly to get the item for free, or may think that buying one is not as much "fun" as grinding for one, however the time spent grinding is unlikely to pay as well as the dailies would over the same period of time and doing the dailies provides other benefits such as faction rep, quest rewards, etc.

I was running through the Wyrmbog on my 38 priest, and had aggro'd 3 or 4 mobs. When I finally stopped to loot a wyrmtail, I still had 1 whelp on me - so this, the one whelp I didn't outrun and killed to get off of me, dropped this pet! What amazing and dumb luck, and the first whelp I'd ever killed on this toon in Dustwallow or elsewhere. I always read about people who get insanely low drop rated items on their first kill and sigh as I'm on mob number 500, but for the first time in 2 years of playing entirely way too much WoW, I'm finally the guy who gets it on the first kill without even farming for it. So I've always said that whenever a mob is in your way, kill it - you never know what treasure it might drop. I almost forgot my own advice tonight, for if I hadn't stopped, I wouldn't have myself a neat little whelpling pet right now. =]

If you are planning on farming for this pet then prepare for a loooooooong wait. I have been killing Scalding Whelps for the past 5 hours and nothing so far. Thankfully I am doing some homework while I wait for them to respawn and then go back and kill more. So make sure you have something to distract you during downtime.

A word to the wise: if you're farming these in the Badlands, and you're a class that dots up groups of these, be careful not to let any of them die in unreachable spots. It's easier than you think for a mob to go where you cannot as he chases you around a rock, and then you're spending 10 minutes just trying to get close enough to loot without falling. Lethlor Ravine has PLENTY of opportunities for this to happen. Knowing my luck, I've lost three Dark Whelplings because of this. Keep an eye on your corpses!
545 kills, still no whelp. It appears the luck I had with Azure and Tiny Crimson has forsaken me. D'oh!

If your farming for these pets i would suggest Letholar ravine in badlands. 1 thing i would suggest is to have one of those little beer fridges by your comp as you might be there a while. As with anything your trying to farm dont give up right away. Stay there and kill them until it drops.

This dropped for me a couple of hours ago. It has allso dropped 2x times for me before TBC. I decided to farm it because of the new achivements and i thought i could make a bit of extra gold of it. There was one whelp at AH and it was at 1600G buyout and 1500g bid lol. No way.
It dropped after only 10-15 whelps. Was very suprised and happy :-)
Not sure if im going to sell it or keep it. Anyway, got it at Trollbane (server) - Alliance faction.
Good luck if someone here farms it. It is definatley possible to obtain with some luck :)
EDIT!

Got this baby today after about 45 minutes farming. I dunno, but it feels like the drop rate has been increased since the patch. Took me about 4 hours of button smashing for the crimson, and over 20 hours total for azure, and then decided to buy it instead, when it never dropped. Those were before the patch. Also alot of other ppl seem to have got these pretty fast now when they try to grind it, always within 2 hours.
Well best of luck to all you guys out there hunting! I'm gonna try for a second one that I can sell :>

I had never farmed this one, though I have put in hours (days most likely) on some of the other whelps and rare pets. There seems to be two areas that these spawn, with an open area in between that has elite dragons. Most of the people farming the whelp will be level 70 but if you're lower level it can be a problem. Also as someone else said, make sure they die where you can reach them!
I killed about 50-60 and had it drop. The quickest I've ever had a rare pet drop!

OK after getting the azure whelpling after 1300+ kills i thought i might have better luck with this one.
Day 1: Killed approx. 510 whelps, no pet.
Day 2: Killed approx. 480 whelps, no pet.
It would seem my luck hasn't improved much. I'll be trying again tomorrow.
Day 3: Killed approx. 330 whelps, and finally got it :D

If you are going to be stuck farming these guys - save the small flame sacs and sell them to alchies in the AH rather than vendoring them. Also if these whelps drop sharp claws, save those too (same reason).

I'm wondering if they changed the drop rate of this pet because I recently tried farming him. Five and a half hours later and having emptied my bags three times, no whelpling. This was on my 70 hunter.
However, about two years ago when I'd first started playing WoW and had no idea what a vanity pet was, my 40-ish pally was grinding mithril and killing mobs for xp. Two dropped in the span of a couple or so hours. So, this is why I'm wondering. Has the drop rate always been 0.1%? I know it's a random-type thing...probability and such, but still...TWO?

Luck is a funny thing sometimes. I count off the kills in my head when I'm farming, and I've been doing this a long time, but never for pets before. I like them. My girlfriend likes them, but now that I can get a little skunk pet... I have to farm stuff like this. So, I'd initially headed out to farm a blue. 287 kills later, I decided to move to greens... 50 kills while competing with an irritating lowbie warlock who dotted everything got boring, so... I headed to Badlands to farm Elemental Earth to make my Tranquil Yeti. (It's extremely expensive right now on my server, and I like farming anyway.) Strangely, I had zero luck even getting those to drop. Then, I thought, "What the Hell? I'll farm a whelp for a while." No dice! I farmed it too quickly. After only 6 kills, this little guy dropped a few minutes ago and is already being lobbied for by She-Who-Loves-The-Pets.

I just got my Dark Whelpling in about 2000ish kills. The entire grind (over several days in smaller portions) was done in the Badlands area and never had any contest over the mobs. The spawn rate was perfect for an enhancement shaman at 70 with instant ghost wolf. I would kill one side of the spawn areas (running between the mobs with ghost wolf) and then mount to the next one and they would respawn exactly as I came back. Don't think I'll ever find a grind that works out so well with constant killing.
Being very lucky with a 20 kill Crimson whelpling and 500 kill Azure whelpling I'm now off to try and get the Emerald one which I'm sure I'll never see where I to grind for years ;). It's well worth the effort once you get one of these guys though. One of the few true grind efforts left in this game worth doing imo.

I've been working on farming the Whelps since I got my copy of
WotLK Collector's Edition
reserved. That said, this has been thus far the most enjoyable grind for the whelp. I've got the
Emerald
and
Crimson
whelps, Crimson is a huge "circuit" with several which don't even drop the pet, and the Emeralds you have to farm the few there are (half of which don't drop it), log to another toon for 10-15 minutes then come back and try again.
These guys are in two easy to farm groups separated by a big open area full of elite dragons (in the badlands). The group to the north has 18 and the group to the south has 14. As a holy pally it takes me about 10 minutes to clear both the north and the south groups never stopping to drink. By the time I finish the south section the north has respawned so it's very easy to run back and forth farming with no interruptions other than running across the area with the elite dragons.
They drop mostly
Forked Tongue
,
Ripped Wing Webbing
,
Small Flame Sac
and occasionally
Wicked Claw
or green drop. The reason I say this is that on average every 2.5 circuits or so (north three times and south twice or vice-versa) you will fill a 16 slot bag, so plan to throw a lot of stuff away or bring several empty bags. I made about 3-4g on money drops over 5 circuits, and then another 4g selling everything they dropped to a vendor, so you stand to make as much as 1.6g per circuit.
Happy hunting!
*EDIT* On 11/10 from 12:00 pm cst - 10:06pm cst I farmed a combined total of 7:16 - completing 43 circuits, and 6 minutes into my 44th circuit I finally got my whelp (and that's not counting the 3 hours I spent farming and getting the information for the first part of this post). In that span and the three hours spent prior to this post I farmed very close to 2000 whelps (1952 to be exact...whats another 48?). While farming, Mr. Pinchy came off cooldown and I was lucky enough to get
Magical Crawdad
which also just happened to be my
50th pet
... so even though my luck was crappy on the whelps, I won on other fronts.
Also worth noting the 10 minute time frame per circuit was near perfect.
Any faster and they hadn't finished spawning at the top and I would have to do a double circle in each section, any slower and you're wasting time. Try and pace yourself for 10 minutes per circuit and you'll get maximum efficiency.

I decided to farm for this pet a few weeks before WoLK came out, so I spent 2 days out in the hills killing the whelps on both sides of the spawn grounds... I would farm before school & after school so I'm unsure as to how many hours but it was so slow... I ended up with a blue, 16 greens, made like 30G & got the pet when I was barely paying any attention to the screen. I never left the area once not even to vendor off junk, just killed & skinned, killed & skinned. I have nicknamed my little dragon Waldo, because he was so damn hard to find :P

Not bad :)
I know many people have bad luck farming for pets like me (1 year doing ZA every reset and no Mojo >.<) , but as many posts stated, don´t give up.
Get someone to chat on ventrilo, listen to music, farm with an alt that can possibly get some experience from killing them and keep trying ´till you get it.
It totally worth it. :D

I was killing the whelps this drops off of for
Fiery Blaze Enchantments
and the third or fourth one dropped the whelpling. I have auto-loot on nearly all the time, so most of the time I don't even really notice what goes into my bags until I'm told I've run out of space. So I was incredibly happy when I saw this blink up briefly on my screen before it went to a bag. I have absolutely
terrible
luck having anything I need drop in instances, so I guess this makes up for that? I proceeded to kill off a valley of
Scorched Guardians
, my first large dragon kills in the history of ever, soon after, so I'll be keeping the little guy in memory of that!

If you're an 80 mage wishing to farm this, do it as Arcane; it's ridiculously easy.
In ilvl 200-213 gear, 71 Arcane, I just ran around hitting Arcane Barrage, looting, Arcane Barrage, looting, Arcane Barrage, looting, etc etc. I hardly made any negative mana gains and stayed above 90% the entire time farming just the whelps. I went through and killed all the elite dragons between each area of whelps just to pace me and to pick up a bit extra gold and the occasional green. Circuit took about 8 minutes, which is a little too fast so take your time.
Pro-tip: Find some good music to listen too. It gets boring :P
Tab, Barrage, Loot. Tab, Barrage, Loot.
~2 hours 40 minutes, ~380 whelps killed

Lethlor Ravine is a good farming location:
1. Kill whelps in the south part of the ravine
2. Mount up and ride through the elite drakes in the middle, they do not aggro lev 80
3. Kill whelps in the north part
4. Repeat 3 times
5. Vendor your stuff
The only problems I ran into were some DKs from the opposing faction leveling their mining, and the fact that the greys stack only up to 5 or 10, so you'd have to run to the goblin vendor a few times. 3-4 hours, done!

The reason this pet sells for less than the Tiny Emerald Whelpling is because the Tiny Emerald Whelpling is much harder to get. It has the same drop rate, but there are a very limited number of Dreaming Whelps up at a time, they share the respawn with the Adolescent Whelps (which don't drop the pet), and the Adolescent Whelp has a better chance of spawning.
Also, for a high level player, it is very easy to kill all the green whelps in Swamp of Sorrows and then sit there for 5-10 minutes while they respawn. If there is more than one person farming for the Tiny Emerald Whelp, it can become
very
frustrating and competition will be fierce for the mobs.
I killed five of the Dreaming Whelps on a whim while running from Duskwood to Blasted Lands and the Tiny Emerald Whelpling dropped on the 5th mob. I was very shocked. It sold for 2,900g, an amount I would've never expected for the Dark, Azure, or Crimson Whelplings.

I decided to try my luck and patience on the four whelps with the Dark Whelping my test of patience. First I started with the Crimson Whelping in Wetlands which took three days and just over 900 kills to get. Next came the Dark but it was on and off at first as I encountered either other pet farmers or questers (the Scalding drops the Black Drake Heart) and as a matter of course I do not interfered or compete with others on the same mob.Whenever I can I would go back to Badlands to try for the Dark. I decided to go next to the Azure and it dropped on my 14th kill. After that I went to try for the Emerald Whelping and got it on my 55th kill. Lastly came full time on the Dark Whelping. This critter took me about 10 hours total over 5 days with 2730 kills before it became my 50th pet for the achievement. This run validates the other things that drives us pet collectors, luck and patience.

As someone stated above, you should farm the pet in Badlands, not Dustwallow Marsh (Because there are two different kinds of whelps and only one drops the pet. They even look exactly the same (Only differnt names and different health) and
maybe
even share the same spawn time, meaning you have to kill the wrong to get the right respawned.)
Just look at the map provided by wowhead (
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=2725
) and start south, kill all the whelps, head north (If you are high level, just ride through the elite dragons.) and kill every whelp there. When every whelp at the northern spawnpoint is dead, the whelps at the southern spawnpoint start to respawn so it's rather "easy" to farm for it.
As for myself, I got mine after 84 whelps. (And the second one a whelp later. You heard right: Two in a row oÔ)

Definitely agree here. I tried the searing whelps first just cause i was close to dustwallow and it was terrible. They are very spread out and the Searing Hatchlings share spawns with the whelps and seem to have a much higher chance to spawn over the Searing Whelps. After about 30 minutes here, and only maybe 30 kills I went to the badlands to kill the scalding whelps.
The Scalding Whelps spawn in Lethlor Ravine. If you make a complete run through the ravine, come out the other end and run around back your starting point you will never really have to stop killing whelps. I started at 66, 51 and ran all the way through the ravine. When you get to the Scorched Guardians you can just run passed them, if you are a lower level just hug the wall and you can run right passed them. More whelps can be found in the next part of the ravine starting around 81, 44. After you clear this part of the ravine from whelps just follow the path out of the ravine, and run back around to 66, 51. By the time you get there they will all have started to respawn already and you really won't have to stop moving.
I spent a couple hours farming for this pet every day for maybe 3 days. It finally dropped for me tonight on my second pass through the ravine, on maybe my 11th kill of the second run through.

Im must be incredible lucky.
On total of 400 kills i got;
1x Dark Whelpling
1x Tiny Crimson Whelpling
1x Azure Whelpling
Guess the Tiny Emerald Whelpling is going to be a pain in the ass :)
If youre a miner you can mine the mithril nodes to for some extra money. (In badlands that is)
Edit: Killed 80 more of them, one more drop!

Azure Whelpling took me a grand total of 2 hours and 3 minutes.
After my incredible luck with the Azure one, I decided to try my hand at the Dark Whelpling.
Three weeks of grinding the whelps. 48 Honor Kills defending my turf. A grand total of 37 hours and 27 minutes of total farming time, the Dark Whelp dropped off of a Whelpling I tagged with Consecration and later found dead in a corner, nearly forgetting to loot it in my haste to beat out a Warrior that showed up 15 minutes earlier.
At least I got a nice Blue Belt 1 minute earlier which netted me 150 gold on the AH. XD
EDIT: Just thought I'd edit that using the math that ohashi posted earlier, I've more than likely killed around 7,000 whelps. The exact number from the amount of time would be 7,190, but factoring in a few whelps that managed to get snagged by rival farmers and talking to friends in guild some where around 7,000 would be more likely. So you killed 1,000 and still no drop? 2k? 4k? Psh... Don't give up. Perseverance. Perseverance. Perseverance. A little bit of stubbornness helps too.

I've been farming these for a little while for two days. Yesterday, I farmed for maybe half an hour before a raid. Afterward, I came back and started tracking kills. At 44, I had to go to bed. I started back up this evening, without having reset my counter, and got the whelpling on kill 66 (22 for the day.) I got my azure whelpling on my 62nd kill, so I seem to be lucky with these little guys. :)
I
am
trying to get the companion pet achievents, actually, but I'm also trying to save for epic flying, so I'm not sure whether or not I'll sell my whelpling. I think I'm going to continue farming for a bit to see if I can get a second one!
Hang in there, fellow pet lovers - you'll get it eventually. :)

There's approximatly 30 whelps per ravine run. Sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more. If you want to keep track on your kills you can count ravine runs instead of whelps :).
Dropped on my 890th whelp, so it IS possible :p.

Just contributing my experience here. I killed around 1200 for mine, give or take a few, and spent the whole time in the Ravine. The best way I found to do it was just to stay on foot the whole time, kill every whelp in sight, then run back around the outside of the ravine to the opposite entrance. It kills enough time that most if not all of the whelps respawn when you get back.
I swear I ended up with 20 greens, about 20g, and 10 stacks of mithril.

I too went to Lethlor Ravine in Badlands and started my killing spree. After around 80 or so kills, i got my whelp.
I also note that after farming the Azure Whelp on and off for a few months, it dropped today after around 100 kills.
Have i been lucky or has Blizzard changed the droprate on these?

After 3 full days of farming, my wife and I on either side of Lethlor Ravine, killing the Scalding Whelps that inhabit the area, one unsuccessful attempt after another, my wife finally slew a Scalding Whelp and looted a Dark Whelpling. She screamed for joy at the sight of the precious little pet. As I continued to farm, my wife volunteered to stay and help. I graciously accepted, as I bent down to loot another unsuccessful whelp. 3..... count the 3 Whelps later, my wife loots another one. She had done the impossible. She picked up an object that appears only .1% of the time, twice in under 4 minutes.... Oh how I hate and love her.....

Farmed for 3.5 hours and at the last second a pally ALMOST stole the kill that dropped it. I had been there alone all night farming them and he showed up about 15 minutes before I got it, but we were both running towards the whelp at the same time... he was about 50 yds away when I managed to tag it with an Earth Shock.
This really makes all the statistics useless. If he had tagged that mob it would have essentially 'reset' the kill count... meaning I would have had to kill another 1k whelps before it had a good chance of dropping.
Anyway, it sold for 1,600g in about 2 hours... probably should have set the buyout higher.

I decided I had to grab one of these little guys and went to farm expecting that I would be killing the whelps for days and days. Then I ran around and dotted up 7 or 8 and on the last one I looted there was my dark whelpling. Craziness.
So yeah, there are those rare times when you can luck out and have it show up in the first ten mins.
Good luck hunting everyone!

I have actually been fortunate enough in my 2-3 years of playing WoW to have 3 of these drop, when only 1 was from pure grinding in-order to get it.
1st - Back when I was levelling my first character, I was killing the whelps for the heart quest item (Cba looking up the quest name) when I saw this pet drop. I never thought about selling it at the time so I used it.
2nd & 3rd - These 2 were obtained literally within 5 minutes of each other. Just before WotLK hit I wanted some easy money and at the time there wasn't anything to do in-game, so I decided to grind one of these (They were selling around 2k on the AH). It must have taken only an hour for it drop so I was quite pleased. Now, I could've just mounted up and ran out, but I decided to kill them some more on my way out. And this is when I got my 3rd. I actually couldn't believe my luck.
Seen as this was on a new main character I decided to use one and sell the other, which fetched 1.9k.
Happy hunting :)

I went farming for my Dark Whelpling tonight; I began at 1:39am & decided I would try to give it 2 hours. When I realized I was approaching 3 hours, i decicded I would call it after 1 more whelpling in the Badlands, or when my bag count went to "0" slots. I hit zero first; checked the time & saw it was 4:37 & targeted one last whelp. I about fell off the couch when the little purple icon showed up as loot. I had to empty a slot for him, but at 3 hours & 2 minutes I finally got my Dark Whelpling (who I am calling Pyro.)
I also added a macro to my toon's specific list of macros so I can summon Pyro with a button, and have Sangreeall (lev 71 BE pally) say something cute, to boot.
If you want to do the same, here's the code:
/cast Dark Whelpling
/s Dragons are a girl's best friend!
For anyone curious about the stats, here's the roll call:
273 whelplings slain (a moment of silvence for our fallen dragons, please)
134 Ripped Wing webbing (grey item, sells for 75 coppers each)
44 Small Flame Sac (trade - sells for 2 silver, 50 copper each)
75 Forked Tongue (grey item, sells for 2 silver, 28 copper each)
8 Wicked Claw (grey item, sells for 5 silver each)
1 Auquamarine (gem, sells for 10 silver to vendor or a few gold AH)
1 Field Plate Boots of Stamina (green item, lev 40)
1 Imperial Leather Spaulders (green item, lev 39)
1 Captain;'s Boots of the Eagle (green item, lev 37)
1 Goblin Nutcracker of Strength (green item, lev 38)
1 Steel Lockbox (lockpicking 175 required)
Mined several Mithril veins & found 1 truesilver = 49 mithril, 3 truesilver, 2 star ruby, 2 citrine, 53 solid stone
All in all, a fairly profitable 3 hours...because of course the best park is adding the whelpling to my collection.
Happy hunting!

Decided I wanted to go and farm this pet as I'm on 43/50 at the moment (can't wait to get my stinker!), and lo and behold on my 2nd kill of a Scalding Whelp it dropped. I kinda looked at the loot box in disbelief thinking "Wtf.. Again?" as a few days ago I started farming for the "Magical Crawdad" pet and got my "Mr Pinchy" on my 5th cast and my first wish granted was the pet :D
Statistics are statistics, there will be anomalies where you will get rare drops very easilly (like I just have) but equally it might take you a substantial while longer. Stick at it, it's all worth it for that feeling of satisfaction you get in the end :)

As an aside - you can safely run through the middle of the ravine from about level 44 if you stay really close to the right hand side and watch out for the drakes which path close to the edge.

I've been working at this all day it feels like. I went to the Badlands for the Scalding Whelps, it's a little easier there. They're not mixed with any other mobs, and they respawn like crazy. At the end of the day, I had three of these bad boys. I gave two to my friend -- they kept one, sold the other. Kept one for myself. I got the first one five minutes in, the second one about three hours in, and the last one probably an hour after. Took a while, but it was worth it! Good luck everyone! Happy farming!

Anyway, I farmed with my lv. 58 DK.

I would definitely recommend killing the Scalding Whelps in Badlands for this, killing all of the Whelps in the North area before moving to the Southern part where they are. After you cleared the Southern section and head back up to the North area the whelps should have just started to re-spawn so it is a fairly easy grind.

I recently got both my Azure and Emerald whelps on my 8th and 45th kills respectively, so I decided I would try to farm the Dark Whelping. I got into a nice rhythm, going back and forth across Lethlor Ravine killing whelps.
And 4 hours, 842 kills later I still don't have it. I had friends in my guild and on Vent to talk to while farming, as well as a TV and music; these things help from going insane. I'm spending another few hours farming it tomorrow, and I'm hoping it'll drop so I can move on to the Red Whelp :)
Good luck to everyone else!
Edit:
Got it on my 3,171st kill. I'm never going back to Badlands.

Well, finally after 1363 loots and roughly 6 hours of farming, I got the little bugger. I don't consider myself lucky (especially in comparison to those of you who got it in 200 loots). It seems though that a little over 1000 loots is the average amount of kills before you get one. It's long, tiresome, and suuuuper boring. Plus, after 1000 loots, it feels like overtime. I don't recommend farming him for gold because you'll most likely be able to earn just as much gold if not more in the time it takes one of the whelps to drop. (Also the more they go for, the longer it takes to sell.) But, for those of you avid pet collectors, go to town with it! On my server I haven't seen this little guy on the AH in months. So, if you want one, expect to have to farm for it. Happy Hunting!

I just found one of these on my Rogue.. I nearly fell off my chair when I looted it!
Funnily enough, I have found myself trying to get this baby during several occassions - I never did any serious farming for it though.
And today I decided that I was gonna skill up my Leatherworking and did some research, finding that the best place to go to at my skill level was
Lethlor Ravine in the Badlands
- I struggled to make my way there and when I finally got there, I found that there was not a single mob in that part of the zone! I ran around the area and found a level 80 and 35 (Both Alliance, me being Horde - also on a RP server so I couldn't kill them) killing and skinning everything, I sprinted ahead and killed anything I could find whilst they ran back and got rid of the respawns. As I got tired of fighting them for the kills, I tabbed out of the game and checked around the net for ~20 minutes or so. When I tabbed back in to the game I saw a few respawned mobs around me and no Allies, so I decided to take a sprint around and kill them. I left a lone whelp right where I was standing and started by clearing the elites, then I saw the Alliance running past and figured I'd just HS out of there but decided against that only to kill that one whelp that I had left.. And then, as I had killed it and autolooted, I saw something familiar but didn't react to it - I skinned the whelp and checked my bags, and there it was! Happily, I watched some Ally run by and /laugh at me, I just smiled back and used my Hearthstone out of there. :)
Can you say
lucky
?
I guess this post might not be all that helpful but I just thought I'd share this with you.
Now I'm gonna tab back, send this pet to my Main and smile for the rest of the evening. :D
Best of luck to any pet hunters out there!

After getting my first whelpling drop earlier today (Azure), I went to farm the others, renewed in my belief that they really do drop. On about my fifth circuit of the Scalding Whelps in Badlands, the Dark Whelpling dropped for me. Definitely an easier farm than for the emerald and crimson, given how many spawns there are, but I found the rewards more fruitful for the azure. It also helped that at level 70, the drakes in the middle of the spawning areas aren't a problem.

After killing 2443 innocent whelps (not including the couple of hundred I killed while
Bunnyhunter
wasn't working) and 10hrs 40mins and 19secs I finally got this little guy!
When I opened the loot window and saw it I could hear the little whelps cry out in joy, their prayers to Deathwing to stop the brutal slaughter were heard!
For all those skinners I stopped skinning them at 1000 loots, by that time my bank alt was full and I couldn't put anymore leather on the AH without flooding it.
For all those miners this is a great place for mithril, with some gold, silver and truesilver thrown in to boot.
All in all I made about 3k of gold off what I looted and have been able to sell on the AH so far, and that's only about 1/3 of my stock.
When it comes down to it though, if I were to have to do it again and could find one on the AH I would probably buy it, it was tedious, boring and very repetitive and that's coming from an avid pet collector.
I was actually clicking the red "?" to ticket a GM to see if they still dropped when I killed and looted it.
For all those wondering, yes they drop as of 4.0.1, even if 2443 whelps tell you they don't =P
On the plus side at least the loot table has been updated now, I even received some stuff from them that was not previously on the loot table
Journeyman's Backpack
for instance.

I can personally confirm that they still drop as I just happen now to get one to drop. You won't believe me when I say this but it was only my fifth kill in as I was heading to the area in Bad Lands where this drops to farm one for my alt. I was planning to skin and mine on the toon for a good while before getting one too! lol
This was on my level 45 horde alt paladin on Skullcrusher US.

I must be one lucky Dragon Whelpling Hunter to grab a chain of 4 drops within 1hour tonight.
First dropped off 645 kills.
Second dropped on the 6th Kill after the first.
Third dropped on the 103rd Kill after the second.
Fourth dropped after 27th Kill after the third.
Drop is really random but here's a good advise, do not stop once it drops ! Farm for an hour to see what happens. The Randomizer logic got me going after my first dropped.
To those who are tired of the grind, don't despair ! The Whelpling is one sick badie dragonkin that needs effort to tame it as your own. After all, you are holding Deathwing's precious children as permanent hostage for life once you got it :D
The Pet is not a myth.

Again, I can confirm that the Dark Whelplings now drop off of Ebon Whelps in Wetlands which is where the Crimson Whelps etc. used to be.
It dropped for me after about 300-400 kills and took about an hour on my druid. The respawns are really quick (don't know if they used to be in earlier patches.. my first time farming a companion!)
There's literally a nice vertical line - just above where the elementals start to spawn - which I constantly ran up and down as the respawns were that quick :)

Well from the research I did today, it seems that the Ebon Whelps would drop both the Tiny Crimson and the Dark Whelplings respectively.
The Ebon Whelps specifically drop the Dark Whelpling, but since they are in the Wetlands and the Tiny Crimson Whelp is a Zone Drop now, putting two and two together leads to believe you can get both from farming the same mob type.
It has been confirmed since Cataclysm came out that people have have both whelps on the Ebon Whelp. I am only 400 kills deep not finding either one, but just wanted to give an updated information regarding the two, since most on the site is out of date, will update more later.
Bored this morning started on killing Ebon Whelps that are continuously spawning, and Dark Whelping dropped about 40 Kills in, so got lucky after about 450 give or take for my first whelp ever, considering I killed over 3k trying to get Tiny Crimson back in the day. Going to continue to kill to see if the Crimson will drop as well.

While comparing prices, I notice one of these Dark Whelplings sitting in my bags. I have no clue when or who dropped this guy, unfortunately. I'm assuming I got this guy from one of many Onyxia's brood members, but since I don't know for sure, I'm not going to confirm anything.

First
day I farmed the place for maybe 3 hours.
Second
day I sat for
9 hours straight
(Yes I am serious), eventually I stopped skinning them to save some time and kill as many as possible as quickly as I could.
Third
day I got it after about 10 minutes.
2995 Scalding Whelps killed, only 1 Blue drop, and around 2500 Leathers.
I don't want to know how many smokes and cups of coffee I consumed in the meantime to keep my sanity(What little was left of it) while doing this.
Now I see purple dragon icons everywhere.
(
I would assume that the Dark Whelpling got a lower droprate compared to the Tiny Emerald Whelpling since the Bunnyhunter-meter for the Green one increases alot faster than the black one did?)

I've been farming the Ebon Whelps for some time now and was beginning to think it wouldn't drop. Then it did-- twice within a few kills. I added the first one as a pet immediately and for some unknown reason I killed a few more. I was shocked with the first drop and in disbelief with the second... very weird how it works out sometimes. I sold the second one on the AH for 5k gold within an hour or so. Again shocked to see that a "buyer has been found for your Dark Whelpling."
I honestly felt guilty when the second one dropped-- I definitely don't want bad pet karma!
I guess the point of my post is this: These things do drop and when they do kill a few more... Except for Emerald Whelplings... leave one of those for me. :)

Later on vent talking to my buddy, I told him and he chuckled, then told me they got for 13-18k on the server (Dragonmaw). Let my error be your advice. CHECK PRICES FIRST! dropped to him during one of the first Q's, so I ofc got really jalous. But by the time we where on one of the last Q's it dropped again to me, which made me SO happy :D
That makes 2 drops in a short amount of time, so if anyone is trying to get this, don't give up :)

. personally, i got tired of killing the ebon whelps and since i have skinning, i went to Badlands figured it's better to skin the mobs that drop this in this area. they drop rugged, and thick leathers w/c sells for a decent amount considering you kill 500-1000 if you're not so lucky. instead of Black Whelp Scales, Medium Leathers and Light Leathers from ebon whelps.
i got my first Dark Whelping drop from a Scalding Whelp after 35 kills, went back to Wetlands and tried the ebon whelps, and after 78 kills, i got a Tiny Crimson Hatchling. I still want to see this drop off an ebon whelp so i kept on killing them. 760 kills later still no pet. went back to badlands to carry on with my idea of killing and skinning and on my 3rd kill of Nyxondra's Broodling, it dropped again. with that being said, i'm staying here on Badlands. i have a spare Dark Whelpling to sell in AH and some leathers.. *kacchhiiiiinnnggg!* :P (yes i'm still here killing and skinning hoping i'd get my 3rd dark whelpling.)
just remember to have fun and make the most out of your grinding time either be mining, collecting herbs, it all adds up and it helps a lot since you won't be stressing yourself if you don't see what you want on the loot.

Looted 4 of them yesterday. Had it before but i needed tiny crimson whelpling (well still need) so i'v decided to go for Ebon Whelps as they drop both + i knew dark have better drop chance, so if i can make cash during my grind why not :). Have started using "Rarity" addon yesterday and...it deleted my data from yesterday no idea why. Any way it took me around 600-700~~ kills for all 4 whelps. First was on 108 kill's second aruond 200 kills later 3rd around 250-300 kills later and 4th was only 19 kills from 3rd :). As of a 1/1000 drop iv been preaty lucky :P yet 1000 kills for crimson ( ~800 of ebon and 200+ of the quick respawn pack's up) and no luck there yet :/.

So i go kill one damn whelp and check the loot, and there it is :D Now i need to hope for some dummy to pay for it.
Done with 85 mage. Good choice to farm with this char, got blink to move fast and as fire mage i could run while casting scorch. Judging from the fangs and wings in my bag i had killed around 500 whelps.

1) 466
2) 3103 (this one tested me :P)
3) 81
4) 1574
5) 462
6) 984 (this one was a tiny crimson whelpling)
Average drop (excluding crimson whelp drop): 1334.
Maybe I am unlucky, but these are the numbers I've found after weeks of farming.
HINT: the best farm spot (in my and many others' opinions) is the ledge- 62.4, 48.6 to 64.5, 48.8
Hope this helps :) HAPPY FARMIN

I used the drop and kept the companion, not really knowing how much it was worth. About 10 minutes later, another one dropped, so I came on here to see how much they sell for. I wasn't expecting it to be a 0.1% drop, I was really having good luck that day. I sold the second for 5000 gold in 1 minute after using trade chat in Orgrimmar.

This companion was a pain. I farmed 'Flamescale Broodling' in Burning Steppes. I was on 4200 kill, nothing drop. My typical darn bad luck :(
Then i decide to try to kill some 'Searing Whelp' in Dustwallow Marsh, after 106 kill it drop. Total on this companion for me was...
Kill: 4306
Rarity Likelihood: 98.65 %
What place is best to farm? I dont know but essentially, it all boils down to patience and luck. The more you kill the mob, the more likely it becomes for a specific item to drop, even if it hasn't shown up yet. Just hang in there! ^^
A GM try to tell me about drop chance...
"Rest assured that this item is still in the game and at this time, the drop is functioning correctly. Please bear in mind that loot is randomly generated from a pool of potential items when a mob is killed, thus, it is possible for a specific item to show up several times, or not at all.
Since items have different drop rates, the process is somewhat similar to trying to roll a '1' on dice of differing sizes, or flipping a coin trying to get it to come up heads. The lower the drop rate, the more sides to the dice, and the less likely it is that it would come up as a '1.'
Similarly, though unlikely (since, statistically, a person flipping the coin has a much greater chance than a person rolling the die), it is entirely possible for the person rolling the die to get a '1' five times in a row, and the person flipping the coin to have it come up 'tails' five times in a row. Another person rolling that same die may need to roll it 50 times before rolling a '1.'
"
So, dont use AH, more fun to get it by your self ;))
This companion make collection to 122.

For those of you trying to farm for this whelp:
In my opinion, the most convenient place to farm would be the Ruins of Kargath. Why? :
- The whelps here have the same % chance of dropping it, (# wise a tiiiiiinnnnnyyyyyy bit more)
-There are about AS much if not MORE whelps than Lethlor ravine has.
-The whelps are all tightly packed; probably within a few feet (maybe yards at most) of each other, so no need to hop on and off and on and off your mount.
- the spawn timer is about the same as the ones in the ravine but may be shorter
-Since they are spread over a somewhat large area, there is NO need to worry about killing them all and waiting for respawn.
yes, their IS one con i can really think of- there are about 2 of em (out of like the 30 somthing) that spawn on a cliff and unless feared off wont be reachable for loot.
I do hope this is useful, i saw no comments describing the place very well or why
it might be a preference. please, if you found this useful to you, or in general, please upvote,
so others may have the same convenience.

I've been farming the ebon whelps that have a 5-10 second respawn in the Wetlands. There is a row of four of them that can pretty much be constantly killed. So far I have killed just over 5000 of them and have yet to see a pet :(
I really hope these particular whelps aren't a special case that can't drop that pet. That would be a lot of hours wasted. They're so convenient to farm that it's hard to go anywhere else. I tried the ruins of Kargath in Badlands, but that spot is much more annoying due to the uneven terrain. It's actually possible to kill whelps there on slopes that are just out of reach and can never be looted. Maybe druids in flight form can loot them, but I sure couldn't.

With MoP on the horizon (and lots of monks wearing leather) it seemed to be a good time to farm some (and a Dark Whelpling). I took my hunter to the Badlands farming the lvl 44-45 Scalding Whelps. Some timing tests showed I could average one kill in 11-12 seconds (including 4-5 seconds for skinning). I did try a "lap" without skinning to see if the respawn rate was fast enough - it is - so skinning will slow you down. Is it worth it? Here's my data:
Kills: 1115 (about 3.5 non-continuous hours including trips back to the handy Fuselight mailbox).
Greens: 16 plus one Journeyman's Backpack
Thick leather: x688 (leather counts include Guild bonus)
Heavy leather: x587
Thick hide: x41
Heavy hide: x40
Lots of junk - I didn't keep track of the grays
Using current average AH prices from wowecon.com: (Your mileage will vary...)
Thick leather: 1.25G
Heavy leather: 2.0G
Thick hide: 3.94G
Heavy hide: no data
The approx value for the leather is 2190G - it make the wrist pain fell better...
Hard to say how MoP will affect leather prices, but I'm betting they will go up.
Now on to Winterspring for the last Whelpling.

A great spot to farm these from the Ebon Whelps in the Wetlands starts at 62.5, 48.6 with one on a small hill. Going to the east, you can follow the hill and find 3 more along the way; killing and looting takes ~5 seconds each. Afterwards just mount up and go back to the first one. I'd say their respawn rate is close to 15 seconds so you can farm them in rapid succession.

So if you decided you want this pet but do not want to get it out of the AH? Here are a few things you can expect:
Besides getting incredibly lucky, you can expect to farm at least 1000+.
Certain zones are better for farming, and keeping your sanity, regardless of the drop rate.
If you are a skinner, you can make a lot of extra gold but be prepared to pay for it in time.
Note: I did not farm a whelp from every zone. When I talk about drop rates, I am mostly referring to wowhead's % and numbers.
尘泥沼泽
PROS:
Higher drop rate, lots of skinable mobs that can be killed in between(non whelps).
CONS:
Each whelp is very spread out. To make matters worse, there are also a
lot
of obstructions in the way, small streams that slow you down unless you mount up every time.
Recommendation: I would not recommend this place. The higher drop rate does not justify the extra time and frustration. The terrain and obstructions is brutal. Finding the whelps is a chore in itself.
Approx kills per minute(including looting): 5
If skinner also: 4
湿地
PROS:
Super fast respawn rate. There is a specific path you can take that is a line of ~7 whelps in a row. Once you kill the 7th whelp, you mount up to whelp #1 and start over again. There are no obstructions in the way.
CONS:
The whelps are about 15 meters apart which is not bad but is more than Badlands. If anyone else is there, they can screw up your routine.
Recommendation: I would recommend this place. The drop rate may be lower but the terrain is flat, the whelps respawn quickly, and with mass looting, you can't go wrong. All you do is follow the same path starting at 65.1, 42.6 and ending at 60.5 41.1, mount up and start over. Before you can get back, whelp # 1,2&3 are back up. By the time you even kill whelp #1, the rest have already respawned. They are that fast. It may take you a minute to see exactly where this is, but once you do, you will see the wisdom in farming in this particular spot.
Approx. kills per minute(including looting, etc): 15
With skinning: 12
荒芜之地
PROS:
Decent respawn rate. Mobs are fairly close to each other. A typical ranged class can reach about 4 at a time.
CONS:
Very rocky terrain. Some places are faster to mount up to reach than to try getting around each rocky edge. This might have been okay except the resawn rate is not high enough to where you can just stand in one spot and pick off 4-6 of them. You have to clear most of the area which requires a lot of extra effort.
Recommendation:
I would not recommend this place for farming.
Edit: I would recommend this spot if you are ranged and have the skills to kill very fast. I would recommend this spot even more if you are not going to bother with skinning as to increase the respawn here is why: After returning to this place for a second try, I realized that this place is not as bad as I thought it was as long as you are not trying to skin every single mob as I was. The rocky terrain can be quite annoying at times but the new
AoE looting
makes it possible to reach those mobs that would normally require you to mount up
as long as the next whelp is close enough
. If you ONLY kill and loot as a ranged, the respawn timer seems to be based on how fast and how many you kill. So I would recommend you try this spot out and ONLY skin the mobs you can immediately reach if you are a skinner. If you are not a skinner, this is all about how fast you can kill and loot. The faster you go, the faster the respawn is.|end edit| It is slightly better in overall farming than dustwallow but it is one of those places where you might lose your sanity if you have to deal with the rocky terrain for too long. If you are a skinner looking for the rugged and thick leather while you farm, then this spot is better than dustwallow.
Approx. kills per minute(including looting):
10
15
With skinning:
8
10
Other thoughts
: Since the respawn timer is based off of how many you kill(a forced respawn), I think it might be faster to bring 2 people? I may try this sometime soon.
燃烧平原
PROS
:Fair respawn rate. Probably about 1 minute. Whelps are slightly larger and easier to target. No obstructions up to a certain extent.
CONS:
Whelps are spread out about 30-40 yards from each other. They are somewhat bunched up into groups, mainly 3 groups which makes a full lap somewhat difficult. Mounting is necessary in some places.
Recommendation: This one is somewhat in between. On the one hand you have the the terrain to be easy to transverse but then they are separated into little zones which means mounting is required. I personally would not farm here unless it was for some other specific reason, i.e. leather. They are just too spread apart. They are easy to get to for the most part(except having to get up and down from the lower and 2 higher groups).
Approx. kills per minute(including looting):10
With skinning: 8
Conclusion:
Taking everything into consideration: drop rates, terrain, distance, respawn, etc. I would have to say Wetlands is the best place to farm. Once you get your routine down, this zone has the highest % of return per minute based on drop rate. The higher drop rate in dustwallow just simply is not worth it.
I do not usually write posts this long but I wanted to be clear. If you find something on here that is in error or you do not agree with, please do not down vote, just message me.
Edit:
红龙宝宝

Wow, I'm soooo lucky! I just found myself in Dustwallow Marsh lvling my battle pets, I had just 20 mins. before I have to leave to go to school, and I thought that while I'm here it wouldn't hurt to kill a few Searing Whelps, I killed less than 20 and what I see? A Dark Whelpling! :D I'm so happy right now! Good luck to everyone looking for this little whelp :)

Wetlands is definetly my fav spot to farm this pet. Farmed for 3-4 hours in badlands without a single drop..
The next day I went to Wetlands to farm and got my first Dark Whelpling after 30 min, and my seond Dark whelpling an hour after I got the first one..

I'm guessing I'm REALLY lucky.. I was running around doing archaeology in the Wetlands, killing the Ebon Whelps as I went and I was killing quite a few then BOOM after 38 kills on them.. the Dark Whelpling dropped! I'M SO EXCITED! I didn't even waste an hour farming, now.. to sell or not to sell?

Ran around for about an hour killing Searing Whelps. After 134, I finally looted my very own Dark Whelpling. He is completely adorable, but I have never felt so bad about running around and killing random things just to get a pet. :'( He is totally worth it.

I've been farming for this since yesterday, only stopping to sleep, and I'm up to a little over 800 kills. Nothing yet. I'm wondering if I should switch to a different mob, like in Wetlands so I can farm for the crimson one at the same time, or move to a place with a higher drop rate like Dustwallow. I started with the Flamescale Broodlings because on the website I initially looked it up on I was missing some information and this was the place I was closest to.
So... worth it to switch, or maybe stick it out here?

After killing approx. 1200 dark whelps in the Wetlands, I was lucky enough to pick up two. The respawn rate of these creatures is very fast--I was able to run back and forth between three in a row, skin them, and by the time I finished off the third one, I would turn around to see the first one I killed was back.
There is no trick for picking up this drop except to have lots of patience with you. Happy hunting.

So far I've killed around 1100 Searing Whelps and Searing Hatchlings in Dustwallow Marsh in a matter of 11 hours and I've obtained 26 green armor/weapons and 1 citrine, all of which have a drop chance of 0.03% or less (0.07% for the citrine)... and still no Dark Whelpling.
I'm just an unlucky person I'm guessing, but I'm starting to think that the drop rates are a bit of a lie, because what's the chances that I would loot 26 greens over 1 pet (especially since 4 of those 26 are the same Tigerbane dagger) when the pet is 3x to 18x more likely to drop than the greens are?

Was farming thick leathers and suddenly ths drops after about 190-200 kills. Ruin's of Kargath, killing Nyzondra's Broodlings might be a good spot.
-Quick respawn
-Swarming with mobs (around 40 pretty close together).
EDIT: Second whelpling dropped on ~400th kill.
EDIT2: Third Whelpling dropped on ~480th kill.

Now every time i get a pet, mount or non gear blue and up i check wowhead.

Here is a formula that you can use to calculate the probability that an item will drop at least once after N tries, assuming the probability for any individual drop is P percent.
Drop percentage after N tries = 1 - (1 - P)^N
For example, Wowhead indicates the probability a Dark Whelpling will drop on any individual kill is about 0.1% (0.001). The formula tells us that you have a 50% chance of getting a Dark Whelpling after 693 kills. You have a 90% chance of getting a Dark Whelpling after 2302 kills.

I discovered an area in Wetlands where three ebon whelplings spawn super fast. As a warrior I was able to kill about 9 whelplings a minute running back and forth between the three. They spawned as fast as I could get to them ,even using charge as often as it reset. It took less than a half an hour before my dark whelpling dropped. I did not count how many I killed, but it was less than 300.... The coordinates for the three whelplings that spawn super fast are 61.9,47.6; 61.2,47.3; and 60.5, 47.1. Before I ran into them I was making circles around the area - but once I realized that these three spawned so fast I just made a straight line between them back and forth. It is tedious, but not as much as when I farmed for some of the other pets that have the same drop rate (1 per 1,000) Happy hunting!(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

These do not drop from Dragonmaw Whelpstealer or Ebon Slavehunter. I have no idea why they're listed on their loot table. If they dropped from any of those, they would have been worth about 5-10g at the auction house for obvious reasons.

I used to think the area in the Badlands is clearly the best since that's where I've always farmed them for ten years, but boy was I wrong.
There is a very specific place in Wetlands that lets you perfectly farm these (at least as a Mage) five in a line where the first one respawns the exact second you land and not a moment too late. (I can kill 20 dragons every 60 seconds)
Additionally you're basically farming two pets at the same time, since the Tiny Crimson Whelpling is a zone-wide Wetlands drop.
The coordinates are simple, 64-60 . 41
IMPORTANT: If they don't respawn it means the whelps you are looking for is directly next to the ones you just killed.
Farming tip: Instead of looting them every time you kill them, do the round FOUR times so that there are 20 dead lootable whelplings on the ground (Don't worry they won't despawn that rapidly), and then on doing the line the fifth time you kill and then loot each whelpling, then do it over again. It makes it look like you're killing hundreds of them in seconds, which is very good for motivational purposes.
Have "rarity" or something that makes a gigantic popup every time you loot for added effect.
Happy hunting!

Sorry, I don't want to make anyone mad.. but today is such a massive L-O-L day.
First,
I did my dailies for the argentum tournament.. I already logged out of the character and then I was like "Well, let's give the brunnhildar daily a go.. Maybe I'm lucky." So I do one of the two quests and before I started the second one I was like "I'm gonna hand this in, in case I get the bear in my first bag. lol as if." .. I hand in the quest, open the bag and already switched into flight form to fly into the direction of the second quest just to find the bear in my inventory.. LOL.
Second,
I did my weekly raid runs for firelands and the first mount didnt drop so I thought to myself: "Well, I got a mount today already, but it would be cool if Fandral's Flamescythe dropped, I wanna be a fire cat!" .. Guess what dropped? LOL
Third,
I was on my way to Onyxia's Lair to get the mount.. I landed in Dustwallow Marsh, clicked M and saw this little Dragonkin symbol on the map and was like "What pet am I missing here? Oh, it's only the dark whelpling, I'm never gonna get that.." So I kill a few of them and rarity keeps popping up in the middle of the screen "1 attemp", "2 attemps" .. I looked at the drop rate and rarity said 0.10% so I chuckled and said lucky bastards who get this, you could be farming forever and not get it. I clicked M again and realised I already went past Onyxia's Lair, so I turned around, killed the last hatchling in front of the raid, loot and a ^&*!ing achievement pops up. LOL. (Rarity gives achievements)
Today is just a day to laugh about. I should go hit the lottery before it's over.
/edit I killed a total of 5 or 6 hatchlings. lol.

My husband and I farmed these buggers at 63 48 in the Wetlands on the top of that ridge where four continually pop for over two hours yesterday afternoon. No luck. (That was after wasting 3 1/2 hours on the Black Tabby Cat, giving up and buying one.) But today we went out on different servers and at 12:13 pm ish central time we both jumped with joy.
The Dark Whelping dropped for him and the Tiny Crimson Whelping dropped for me at the exact same time on different servers but the same spot after about 20 minutes or so.
I figure it was worth mentioning because it happened at the same time, but honestly not sure if it means anything or not. Or if luck was on our side and I can now make lunch.
Long story short if you are going to farm this guy I suggest doing it this location, you have the opportunity to get two world drops and it's a lot flatter than the Badlands location. As long as no one else is out there you'll never run out of the Ebon Whelp because they spawn so quickly.
Happy hunting and don't forget your happy place/pills. You'll need them.

You'll need to kill about 348 of both (was about 500 for me).
I've created complete navigation for TOMTOM (
https://www.twitch.tv/tomtom
) which should allow you to focus just to farming.
Macro:
/way reset all
/way 42, 66
/way 43, 69
/way 44, 64
/way 44, 69
/way 44, 78
/way 45, 64
/way 45, 68
/way 45, 72
/way 45, 76
/way 46, 65
/way 46, 69
/way 46, 73
/way 47, 70
/way 47. 67
/way 48, 81
/way 49, 67
/way 49, 78
/way 50, 70
/way 50, 75
/way 46, 81
Following this should give you about 30 kills in 5 minutes (aprox 5 minutes is also respawn). So, 1-2 hours and done.
TOMTOM settings changed
General options > Ask for confirmation on "Remove all" > (unchecked)
General options > Clear waypoint distance > 30
For counting kill I'm using KillTrack (
https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/killtrack
) It doesn't seems work for 100% now but it do it's work.
Good hunting...

In the Wetlands, if you stand near 60.81, 47.13, there are 3 whelps that spawn every 20 seconds after death. Use your monk with Black Ox statue and have at it. I found the dark whelpling pet after 880 registered attempts (not counting the hundreds before I got a mod to tell me this lol). Then about 5 minutes later I got another one but the point stands that this particular location has extremely fast spawn rates!
