I've just found one of these in a big red Gleaming Treasure Chest on the Timeless Isle, in the alcove to the west of Ordos' place. No idea what it's for.

I was unable to use this to alter an iLevel 496 item that I had already "opened", but I was able to use it on an "unopened" generic mail chest. Once I had done so, the generic-mail-chest-piece changed into a soulbound iLevel 535 Crimsonscale Vest, labeled timeless as Taliwyr indicated (much like heroic gear gets the "heroic" label in green).

This is the upgrader item of Patch 5.4 "catch-up" gear that
upgrades armor pieces from ilvl 496 to 535
. The Burden is a bind-on-pickup item and with the latest hotfix it's no longer able to be traded between players that killed the same mob.
How to use
:
You can use the
不朽之责
only on the raw,
"
unopened
"
BoA
versions of Timeless armors. However,
Timeless trinkets
cannot be upgraded by Burden of Eternity - but you can buy their ilvl535 version from
织雾者艾莉
for 50.000x
永恒铸币
per piece.
Clarification about upgrading process
:
As you right click on your Burden and select a timeless armor to upgrade (by left-clicking on it), the armor will automatically be replaced with an ilvl 535 item of the same slot, with class-tied main stats (Strength, Intellect, etc) and randomly given secondary stat-combination for your
current loot specialization
instead of active specialization that causes confusions for many players. Since the Burden is
BoP
the outcome lvl535 item will be BoP aswell obviously.
Available stat-combinations differ by classes and specs. You can find the list of combinations below the tooltip of the
created timeless armor
items so you can see what stats you can have on them before rolling a burden upgrade.
Sources we know of so far:
100%: Loot from
炽燃宝箱
(There are few reports that the chest sometimes does not drop Burden, updated info below.)
100%: Reward from quest:
烈焰祭司阿克鲁斯
,
100%: Buying for 50.000x
永恒铸币
from vendor
织雾者艾莉
,
Low chance: Drop from chests of
库库鲁大师
,
Low chance: Drop from varous mobs and chests on the island.
Update
: I just received a confirmation from a Game Master that Burden of Eternity should be a
guaranteed drop
from the Blazing Chest, so if anyone did not receive it from the chest feel free to send in a ticket so they will check further into the issue.

My main concern with this item is that you can only upgrade the unbound tokens; items you have no idea will be valueable or not.
I know the tokens will give you an item useable for your class spec, but the stats is still random. For my arms warrior i got a chest with only mastery (and a blue socket with +int bonus, wich i assume will be fixed later on). If i had wasted a Burden of Eternity on that token on live, i would have been furious.
My suggestion is to have these items upgrade pieces of gear already acquired from tokens.

Doesn't work on Timeless Armor Caches. You'll have to do it on the bracers, cloaks, etc. instead.

In terms of getting these for coins, in the long term Kakuru caches are much better than Ai's 50k price tag. According to reports here, the drop rate from caches is better than 5%. Even at 5%, that means 20 keys (on average) to get a burden. 20 keys is 10k tokens instead of 50k.
However it gets better - you get maybe half your coins back from the caches on average. So you are likely to end up getting one of these for (on average) 5k coins even assuming only a 5% drop rate from caches.
And best of all, there's no limit to how many you can get per week, to my knowledge, so you can keep on farming coins and buying cache keys as much as you like!

Actually, there needs to be an added note, that this item can also be found from the treasure chests, that you buy the keys from the monkey guy in the cave on timeless isle.
That is where I received mine.

I was sad to find out that the character you have this item with can ONLY use it on items THEY themselves can use (which makes the token into a soulbound 535 piece of your current specialization). I was hoping to use it on a leather piece and send it to my rogue from my mage, but alas. Atleast I can farm it!

Kittytreets
What you do with these is, you right click to use the Burden of Eternity then your cursor will highlight just as if you were enchanting an item and then you click the timeless armor piece that you want to turn into a 535 item. It becomes soulbound when you use the Burden on it. ;o) Sorry if this seems like common sense I just wanted to clarify because I was afraid people might accidentally waste their Burdens when they're in an alt's bags or something. ;o)

If you're scared to use
不朽之责
due to its rarity and because you have no idea what to expect from the Random iLvl 535 Gear, here's a breakdown of what you will get:
‹
°
›
IMPORTANT: Use the formula below to calculate the
exact amount
of possible Primary + Secondary Stats for each piece of gear.
The above link in Voxxel's post from WowDB
does not
include all possible random enchants on some pieces of gear, so
please
do not assume your piece of gear's stats will match what's shown on WowDB, or you may be very upset that you wasted a
不朽之责
!
‹
°
›
Primary Stat
will always be one that is beneficial to your current Loot Specialization;
Example:
Strength for all Warriors, Agility for all Rogues, but Intellect
or
Strength for Paladins based on their loot spec.
Click
here
for a complete list of exactly how much Primary Stats each piece has.
(Secondary Stats; use formula below)
‹
°
›
Secondary Stat(s)
will be either:
Any ONE Secondary Stat useable (not necessarily desired) by your spec, equal to 100% of the amount of your Primary Stat.
(except Helm/Chest/Legs, see below)
---or---
TWO different Secondary Stats each equal to 2/3rds of your Primary Stat.
Example:
Shoulders with 1,000 base Strength could get 1 Stat of 1,000 Haste, or 2 Stats of 667 Crit + 667 Mastery. In addition, some classes such as Balance Druids can get Stats ranging across the whole spectrum, and gear can get bloated with Hit/Expertise.
UPDATE 9/17/2013:
In light of the massive amounts of random stat possibilities for each class, I'm working extremely hard to create an interactive Item Comparison listing the exact stats for
every single
piece of iLvl 535 Timeless Gear with all combinations possible, and to fit it into one nice clean table (and greatly shorten this post in the process) Give me a few hours and I'll have it uploaded here for you all ! <3
Edit: 6:15 PM, finished spreadsheet with all stats for every piece of gear, moving data into a table w/ item links, ALMOST DONE GUYS :-)
‹
°
›
Only Helmets, Chests, and Legs will have Gem Sockets (one socket). However luckily they give large Socket Bonuses and the Helmet also has a Meta-gem Socket equippable with the Legendary Meta.
‹
°
›
Due to the Gem Sockets in the Helmet, Chest, and Legs, they will have a lower budget (amount) for Primary and/or Random Stats and do not follow the same formula for budgeting as above, but will still have either 1 or 2 Secondary Stats.
‹
°
›
The gear will become soulbound and the Burden of Eternity will be consumed, so you may have to use multiple Burdens on multiple of the same type of armor token to get the stats you want.
‹
°
›
Gear can be Double Upgraded from iLvl 535 to iLvl 543 for 500 Valor Points (250 Valor per Upgrade of 4 iLvls each). Strongly recommend saving Valor Upgrades for gear with 2 Secondary Stats that are preferred by you for your specific needs and spec.
‹
°
›
Does not work on Trinkets / Timeless Curios, 'Generic' Armor Caches that have no specific gear slot/type, or any gear that is already soulbound, and there are no BoA Weapon Tokens that drop or that you can use this on.
I hope this cleared the air for what you might expect!
And remember, just because its a 'higher item level' doesn't always mean its better! Without
a lot
of luck on the random stats, many pieces of gear will end up being iLvl 535 Vendor or Disenchant trash.

nephrite
Just to be clear, you can valor point upgrade the 535 items these create.

*Please keep in mind that this was before the hotfix on September 12th and I have not yet been able to adjust the figures.
I decided to do a simple test of chests vs vendor for
不朽之责
.
So for a baseline I picked 50,000 coins which we know would result in one
不朽之责
.
Now the
库库鲁的宝箱钥匙
cost 500 each that equates to 100 keys (50000/500).
Here are my results from 100 keys:
疯癫猴
x 2
x 90
Now the
永恒铸币
that I looted 90 times came to a sum of 33100. Now subtracting that from what I initially spent I ended up losing only 16900 coins. The coin mean was 367.77, the min 50 and the max 850.
I'm going to take this even farther there was a 33.8% loss when it came to the
永恒铸币
, now from the amount I made back I could buy another 66 keys. With 33100 as the starting value and it adhering to the 33.8% loss I would now have 21913 coins left which would allow me to buy 43 keys. I'm going to put this into a list now that I've shown the math to make it less wordy.
* Please keep in mind I have not fully test this and cannot guarantee that there is a 33.8% loss each time
50000 coins (100.0 keys) -> 331000 (38.8% loss)
33100 coins (66.0 keys) -> 21913 (38.8% loss)
21913 coins (43.8 keys) -> 14506.4 (38.8% loss)
14506.4 (29.0 keys) -> 9603.24 (38.8% loss)
9603.24 (19.2 keys) -> 6357.34 (38.8% loss)
6357.34 (12.7 keys) -> 4208.56 (38.8% loss)
4208.56 (8.42 keys) -> 2786.07 (38.8% loss)
2786.07 (5.57 keys) -> 1844.38 (38.8% loss)
1844.38 (3.69 keys) -> 1220.98 (38.8% loss)
1220.98 (2.44 keys) -> 808.29 (38.8% loss)
808.29 (1.62 keys) -> 535.09 (38.8% loss)
535.09 (1.07 keys) -> 180.85 (38.8% loss)
Okay so from the degradation based on the data with the investment of 50000 for 100 keys you'll actually end up getting about 293.21 keys out of the entire process. Which is nearly double the amount of keys from 50000.
So what does this all mean for chest vs vendor?
Well from previous comments I can gather that some people have been lucky and received multiple from 100 keys or less and others have received none. From what I can tell by buying
库库鲁的宝箱钥匙
you're not risking much, based on previous statistics from the PTR(which may have since been altered) you should acquire as
不朽之责
every 13000 coins or so. Therefore buying keys should increase the amount of
不朽之责
you receive.
I will continue to update this as I buy more keys.
*edited for disclaimer

Note that the hotfixes from Sept 12 state: "Reduced the chance for Burdens of Eternity to drop from Kukuru's Caches." So it may be less efficient to do that now. I got a Burden on my first chest (maybe they were tempting me!) and haven't had one since.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
5.4 Hotfix - September 12, 2013 - Reduced the chance for

to drop from Kukuru's Caches.
(It was only a matter of time honestly)
Please continue to provide feedback if using
库库鲁的宝箱钥匙
is still more viable than spending 50,000 Timeless Coins for a Burden of Eternity
;
I will update this as soon as more number crunching is done using the cache keys post-hotfix.
For now, you're best off holding on to your Timeless Coins until a more recent, updated, and accurate drop-rate is established if you planned on using them for Burden of Eternity gear upgrades.

From the patch notes on 9/13/2013:
There were also some changes to prevent unintended shortcuts: chests on the Timeless Isle now require level 90 to open, and the chance to get Burden of Eternity inside one of Kukuru's chests has been decreased. As many of you pointed out in the comments, this was a much better way to get Burden of Eternity than spending 50000 at the vendor.
I'm assuming it no longer makes sense to save coins for keys if you want Burdens.

As has been stated above, Kukuru's Caches are no longer a reasonable method of getting these.
After gathering 50k coins, here are the results of buying 100 keys:
40750 coins
13 armor tokens
1 Bonkers
0 Burden of Eternity
Re-investing the 40000 coins netted me:
9 armor tokens
0 Burden of Eternity
~28000 coins.
The drop rate seems extremely low now.

Just spent 53010 coins and wanted to share my results:
53010 coins, 106 keys, 10 gear tokens, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
36560 coins, 73 keys, 7 gear tokens, 1 bonkers, 0 burden
22911 coins, 45 keys, 4 gear tokens, 2 bonkers, 0 burden
13562 coins, 27 keys, 7 gear tokens, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
7462 coins, 14 keys, 2 gear tokens, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
5962 coins, 11 keys, 3 gear tokens, 1 bonkers, 0 burden
3362 coins, 6 keys, 0 gear tokens, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
4 keys, 1 gear token, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
3 keys, 0 gear tokens, 0 bonkers, 0 burden
After round 9, I saved a few coins for mogu runes.
Coin drop off rate ~33% (retention rate 67%)
Gear drop rate - 11.7% (doesn't appear to favor your current armor class)
Bonkers drop rate 4/289 -- probably 1%
Burden drop rate ? - seems
significantly
nerfed
Conclusion: My guess is they made it approximately 1 burden for 50000 coins, just like the vendor. They said "no short cuts". You may get a burden after 500 coins or never... it's just the roll of the dice. I have spent upwards of 80k coins over the past few days, 12k or so before the nerf, and gotten zero burdens (aside from some rare drops and the guaranteed rewards) and 7 total Bonkers. Whether you want to take your chances on Kukuru or not is up to you. I, personally, will never try him again. If I see another Bonkers, I will punch a baby in the face.
I'm off to go cry. Hope this helps everyone. UPVOTE so people are aware of the nerfing and these results.
UPDATE: Just had another session with the monkey.

So,, after a few hours of deliberation and after reading these comments I though "what the heck" and decided to gamble my coins for the chance to win one (or more) Burden of Eternity, with the chance to also win back some of my coins.
I had just over 50,000 coins to play with and here are my results, carried out on the morning of 16 Sep 13:
Round 1
Coins spent: 50,000
Keys purchased/Chests Open: = 100
Burdens Won: = 0
Coins won: 32,553
I actually won 1x coin 3 times
Round 2
Coins spent: 30,000
Keys purchased/Chests Open: = 60
Burdens Won: = 0
Coins won: 21,360
I actually won 1x coin 1 time
Round 3
Coins spent: 20,000
Keys purchased/Chests Open: = 40
Burdens Won: = 1 (opened on the 37th Chest)
Coins won: 13260
So I started with 50,000 coins
I ended up with 1 Burden which took 197 chests to find and almost 100k coins in total.
From my initial 50,000 coins I ended up with about 17,000 change
My maths are not great, but I think that makes the drop rate for a Burden, for me, close to 0.5% chance
It was worth it in the end, but I was 3 chests away fom a total failure and will not be doing that again !

Just an FYI, these Burdens of Eternity DO NOT STACK in your bags. Discovered that by accident when I got one off the ship, and one off the blazing chest. :-) So...make SURE you have bagspace for one when you run for the chest (plus all other drops, I got 3 other things).

I'm still on the fence as to what the drop rate is from the monkey casino chests. Was roughly 1% drop rate on toon 1, and 0% on toon 2. Story below:
On Sept 15th, on my pally, i spent 30k (recycling the coins i got back from the chests), and I received 3 burdens of eternity.
I was so encouraged by those results that I jumped on my warlock and dropped the 90k I had stored up on him..and received no burdens of eternity.
Guess pally is just super lucky as he has received 8 burdens already, and the lock only the 2 you get from chest and questing :(

Much like the regular items, there's a bit of luck involved in getting a good item because of the way Blizzard currently itemizes random suffix items. First off, Timeless items will generally lack the same gem slots as equivalent ilvl loot (e.g. Throne of Thunder heroic). Second, if you get a random suffix (e.g. "of the Adroit" - expertise) that has only one secondary stat, the item will have significantly less stats than regular gear (about 75%) and less than random suffixes that have two secondary stats (e.g. "of the Windflurry").
I've already used multiple Burdens (I got 5 in the first week, none from the monkey) on my Rogue and received a pair of boots which had nothing but haste, a ring with nothing but expertise, and a ring with both haste and mastery.

My main has been questing-well, killing mobs, really, rares and elites and whatnot-for a week now and the only Burden I have to report is the one from the Blazing chest. Meanwhile, a friend on my server has already got about 8 of them, not from the key-opened chests, but from random mobs around the island, non-elite ones included.
Apparently, when RNG hates you, there's nothing for it-it seems to hate me, hehe.

I think the best way to obtain these is spamming the same chest, it has worked for me and now have 6 in total with about 20k coins actually spent. It is like the chests go through a cycle rather than RNG although i know that's not the case, but that is the method to my madness, I have told guildies the same information and their luck greatly increased also. It just makes sense.

I did a bit of math comparing 528 (LFR) and 535 (timeless) gear and concluded that the they both have identical primary stat gain including the extra sockets on LFR gear. However timeless gear with 2 secondary stats on them have slightly more secondary stats.
For example timeless boots have 150 more secondary stats than the LFR versions and 3 more primary stats. That is assuming the timeless boots have 2 secondary stats and you respect socket color.
So if you are don't raid (anymore) but still like to max your toon like myself, timeless gear can be slightly better than LFR gear. I would still go for 4/4 LFR tier pieces though, and obviously coin Ordos every week for offpiece.

I got one from killing a regular level 90 yak, and another one from killing one of the elite pink birds. So, I got two from random trash, two days in a row. I wouldn't have used them up on the first two pieces I had if I knew that they were actually rare. But, I thought I would make mention that these can be obtained from random trash.

For my Warlock I didn't get Cloth Spaulders, but Leather Spaulders dropped. Due to the very free discription "to create an item appropriate to your loot specialisation" I was curios if the Burden would have the Power to transform also the armor class. I started a try and it began to cast. I was to unsure and stopped it. Google couldn't help me, so I started a brave new try.
The cast began but at the very end he aborted saying "can't use that".
Bummer...
So, if you don't believe me, you can have a try yourself. But you don't need to have.

I plan to keep this topic posted with a relevant information. My tests all start with 20,000 coins (40 keys) and I then spend the gains back. I'll keep getting data sets with 20k as my initial investment.
To keep my post clean and easy to read I won't post each data set (where I used all my coins and what I got after each "round" of re-investment), I'll simply say how many keys it took me to get one Burden and how many coins that cost.
Again, to reiterate, my

is
always
20,000 Timeless Coins and then I spend the coins I gain from opening chests back into the gamble. I shall keep this post as updated as I can.

12 Burdens, after the "nerf"
but, seriously, be careful...it will suck the fun out of the game. Flex is a little harder than a lot of us expected, I haven't gotten any boss kills yet. That leaves me with a pointless timeless isle grind for 1 trinket, and a mount, which I have no interest in doing at all. These burdens killed the game for me, and after going back to Guild Wars 2 for a day, I'll be spending my time there only going on for guild runs. If anyone's wondering, 1 blazing chest, 1 from the dread ship, 1 from Cinderfall, 9 from Kukuru's chests after the nerf.

And I can confirm after using it on my chest - the SINGLE secondary stat it gave me was HIT, plus a blue socket with a +180 intellect bonus...

Okay so regarding spending your coins on chests at Master Kukuru's place...
My statistics:
I started out with 34500 coins, that equals 69 keys.
From the first 69 keys i got:
20500 additional coins - 10 armor pieces - 2 bonkers - 0 burdens
The 20500 additional coins gave me 41 keys, here is what they awarded me:
14000 coins - 3 armor pieces - 1 bonkers - 0 burdens
The next 14000 coins gave me 28 keys, maybe i was lucky this time?
Here is the outcome:
9000 coins - 1 armor piece - 0 bonkers - 0 burdens
By now - my spirit was pretty beat up, but i had to continue my test and go total broke... The 9000 coins gave me 18 new keys.
The 18 keys got me:
5500 coins - 4 armor pieces - 0 bonkers - 0 burdens
5500 coins gave me 11 keys. the 11 keys gave me:
3500 coins - 1 armor piece - 0 bonkers - 0 burdens
And now - with only 3500 coins left that gives me 7 keys to gamble on with, was i to get the long waited burden of eternity?
Ofcourse not..
i got 1500 coins - 2 armor pieces - 0 bonkers - 0 burdens
The last 3 keys from the 1500 coins turned into 2 keys, that turned into 1 key, which eventually turned into 1 "Timeless cloth leggings" - Horraaay!
To come to conclusion - The risks of this gamble doesn't seem to be worth it - in my case atleast - As i was finished and after a long night of coin farming i was ready to head weeping since i didn't get the burden i was searching for, some random dude got his burden on his first key, with his first 500 coins, that he got just, 2 min after he got online from patching.
Oh the irony..

You can use Burden of Eternity on items NOT suited for your class. I just used it on a plate token (shoulder), and I play a druid.
The upgrade was successful, but gets me nowhere as the item is
soulbound
, and can NOT be mailed to any other character after upgraded using the burden.
The 1st of October hotfix also made these non-tradeable amongst "all players eligible to the loot"; so they can no longer be bought.

Note that if you loot one while grouped, you can trade it (within 2 hrs)with others who were in on the kill.
Not sure if you can trade it with ungrouped people from the kill.

I decided to spend my coins on these keys despite some of the unfortunate results of other commenters.
All coins obtained from the chests were reinvested until I had none left. I don't have the exact number of keys.
Char 1: 40,000 coins, 2 burdens
Char 2: 19,000 coins, 1 burden
Char 3: 19,000 coins, 1 burden
Char 4: 16,000 coins, 0 burdens
Plus about 15 Bonkers and many armor pieces. I still believe this is a better way to spend coins for burdens than to buy them outright.

What I'm wondering is if Archerus of Flame really drops a Burden of Eternity fully 5% of the time, why don't we just buy
Scroll of Challenge
and get an expected value of 1 Burden from 20000 coins instead of 1 Burden from 50000 coins?
If the logic is sound, the chance you'll get it doing just two Challenges per day is equal to ~ (.95)(.95) which is 9.75%. Buying 10 Scrolls would make your chance ~(.95^10) which is roughly 40%.
This is completely irrespective of what
others
get from looting
your
summoned Archerus. It doesn't even take into account that you could theoretically get 20 people who each get a scroll, all tag the Archerus each time, and each person ends up (again, expected value; in reality some will get 2 or 3 and others none) with a Burden from only a single Scroll investment. It's also irrespective of whatever else the Archerus drops.

Some info for those wondering if
Kukuru's
chests are worth doing for
Burdens
AFTER the hotfix reducing the chance for Burden's to be in Kukuru's chests. Was NOT worth it for me. I know everyone's experience will be different.
I went in with
55000 coins
. Bought as many keys as I could. Everytime I ran out of keys, I bought more until I ran out of coins. Repeated this until I could not buy any more keys. I ended up wiith:
3 Signets
3 Lavaliers
3 Cloaks
22 pieces of assorted armor tokens (cloth, leather, mail, plate)
2 Bonkers
0 Burden of Eternity
Now, I did this on a character that doesn't need Burden gear, and I really needed Lavaliers for alts to use Burden's on, so I don't feel this was a waste. However, if Burdens were my goal, it definitely would have been.
Again, just one player's experience. The Burden drop rates are up to the RNG gods and some people who do what I did may end up with multiple Burdens rather than zero. But as for me, I won't use this method for Burdens next time.

I would never suggest that there's a method to the madness, but just in case someone wants to try to reproduce my luck...I have spent roughly 70k FARMED coins (this amount is not including the coins I got from chests and used to buy more keys) on keys. With those 70k farmed coins, I have gotten 7 burdens from chests. I basically buy all of the keys I can afford at once, then sit in one little spot and just open the chests within reach (namely the ones to the right of the mob as you face him that includes the one that resembles the chests from the Trove of the Thunder King) until I'm out of keys, rinse, and repeat.

First of all, no player is at fault for the fact that the description for the Burden of Eternity is about as uniformative and meaningless as it can be. That is the fault of the Blizzard employee or agent who wrote it. If a player is able to read and to write competently, however, then they should be able to
simply
describe how to use the
Burden of Eternity
if
, in fact, they do know that.
After acquiring my first Burden of Eternity today, I decided to consult Wowhead in hope of finding reliable information and instructions as to how to
use
that item to produce what its description claims will be produced. I wish I could say that the time and effort has been well-spent.
(1)
The Burden of Eternity is
used
,
but upon which object is it "used"?
Or is another object needed to use it at all?
Perhaps a better word would be "applied" instead of "used", in the way that a player uses an
enchantment inscribed upon vellum
to apply that enchantment to a piece of armor. Namely, right-click on the enchanted vellum, then left-click on the item you want to enchant.
There are two opposing opinions as to which object the Burden of Eternity is applied. Some players apparently claim that it is applied to an existing piece of iLevel 496 armor, which has been previously created by using a "Timeless
" token.
Others, however, report that applying it to an existing piece of armor does not work, but applying it to a "Timeless
" token itself does create a piece of armor that is iLevel 535 instead of iLevel 496.
In my own experience so far, after (a) I placed the mouse cursor on the Burden of Eternity and clicked the right mouse button, then (b) placed the mouse cursor on a Timeless Plate Armor Helmet and clicked the left mouse button, a progress bar appeared and began "filling". (The same process occurs when applying an enchantment.) However, when the process ended, the existing armor remained unchanged, and the Burden of Eternity was not consumed.
Unfortunately, I did not have on hand a "Timeless
" for a piece of armor that I would want to expend the Burden of Eternity to create, so I cannot affirm that process will work, either. If it doesn't, then I should hope that Blizzard's GMs can resolve the matter.
Be that as it may, I expect that applying the Burden of Eternity to a "Timeless
" will create the corresponding piece of armor as an iLevel 535 item instead of an iLevel 496 item. The internal creation procedure itself is quite likely the same as simply using the token itself to create the piece, except that the iLevel is higher. So, the primary and secondary attributes of the piece of armor are higher.
(2)
The description of the Burden of Eternity's use is:
"Imbue great power upon an unbound Timeless armor token to create an item appropriate for your loot specialization."
"Imbue great power ..."?
Frankly, I expect whatever "power" the armor has is likely to be expressed by primary and/or secondary
stats
whose values are written in digits. I suppose it a bit too much to hope for an item that is anything like
Souldrinker
-- which is a weapon -- but have a proc that is appropriate for armor.
Terms
again: what is an
"unbound Timeless armor token"
? (Blizzard will deign to answer.)
Does the word
"unbound"
refer to a piece of armor that is
not
already Bind on Account, Bind on Pickup, Bind on Equip, or Soulbound? Since every piece of gear that I have ever seen has one of those four attributes, perhaps the Blizzard writer refers to the fact that gear in a "Timeless
is not "bound" until it is created by using the "token".
The word "token" has a specific technical meaning in the Object Oriented Paradigm that is used for designing software, especially software that enables the user to interact with objects
. Just exactly what "token" means in
this
context is unclear. The words "armor token" could refer to an existing piece of armor, but could refer to one that is used to create a piece of armor instead.
(3)
When a player uses a "Timeless
", it creates an
Account Bound
item appropriate for the player character's "loot specialization." Apparently, when the player applies the Burden of Eternity instead, then a
Soulbound
piece of gear is created according to that character's loot specialization. (I do not know what happens if the Burden of Eternity is applied to a "Timeless
" for an item which the character cannot use, but players report here that the armor will be created nonetheless.)
Which leads to another question: how does a player find out which "loot specialization" that their character is assigned? Can that be chosen and/or subsequently changed by the player?
In my own experience, it has always been controlled by the currently active class specialization for the character. Thus, when a Paladin has a Retribution spec active, using a "Timeless
" creates armor with stats appropriate for that spec, and when the same Paladin has a Protection spec active, the "Timeless
" creates armor with Parry and/or Dodge as at least one secondary stat. If the Paladin had a Holy spec active, then the cache would produce armor with INT instead of STR and usually Spirit would be at least one of the secondary stats, if not the only added stat.
(4)
Then there is the debate as to whether buying
Kukuru's Cache Keys
are a worthwhile gamble, compared to buying the Burden of Eternity from
Mistweaver Ai
for 50,000 Timeless Coins instead. Perhaps that analysis belongs in the comments for
Master Kukuru
.

My experiences getting
Burden of Eternity
by using
Kukuru's Cache Key
is the following
Started with 45000
Timeless Coin
Results:
3x
Burden of Eternity
28x Different pieces of Timeless attire
2x
Bonkers
Ended up buying 249 Kukuru's Cache Key = 124,500 coins
First two Burdens dropped from the initial 90 keys (45000 coins), and the third one from the second time I purchased 67 keys.
So at the end 45000 coins bought me 3x Burdens and countless Timeless attire. Much better than buying 1x Burden for 50000 coins from
Mistweaver Ai
.
Another experience on my main on the same day, 1 Burden from
Gu'chi
. Right after that went to spend 25000 Timeless Coins on keys. From the chests I received 2 Burdens (actually both within a minute of each other). Not to mention the previous day I got 2 Burdens, 1 from
Huolon
and the other from a
Burning Berserker
. I guess the the last two days were lucky for me. 8 burdens on 2 characters.

Hello <insert character name>!
First, I want to apologise for the very long wait time! We have seen a huge increase in tickets lately, increasing our response time..
But we are doing what we can to get it back to our normal response time as quickly as possible!
I am sorry to hear that you used your Burden of Eternity while in the wrong spec. But sadly, we are not able to reverse this again once the item has been used. It is the players own responsibility to ensure that the character is in the right spec before using the item.
I am afraid that you will have to obtain a new Burden of Eternity to get the item that you wanted.
Edit: changed a few lines and took care of tooken (token now)

I have found that building up a good cache of coins then having a spree in Kukuru's cave works every so often, if you're lucky you can get some gear & a Burden dropping, although it can be frustrating if you only need a specific item or 2 to upgrade. It seems that some gear is rarer than others, as a plate DK I find bracers & gloves very seldom drop. It is also possible for Burden to drop from any mob you kill. I've had 2 from Ordon Candlekeepers (but this doesn't happen very often).

I was a bit fed up that my timeless coins really couldn't buy anything really useful anymore. So I looked up Kukuru's Grotto, from which I heard and read about. I was hoping that some keys might get me the Timeless Plate Gloves that I still can't find. I bought 10 keys just to see how this works and I expected to invest a lot more.
Now I know people are going to hate me for this, but I opened the
first
chest:
不朽之责
. So I'm totally like "What the ...". Then I thought: "Oh I get it: the first one is a guaranteed drop, just like the burning cache" (I couldn't be more wrong). So I open up 3 more and get some coins. And then I open up another Burden of Eternity.... So thats two
不朽之责
with 5 keys... The other 5 keys were just coins.
I'm almost feel a bit guilty putting this here...
Now there is
one thing
I can't get out of my mind: What else could I have done this night with so much luck? What I should have done instead of playing WoW is buying 10 lottery tickets and chill in St Tropez for the rest of my life.....
Screenshot submitted.
So for me it was:
10 keys
2 Burdens
0 Timeless Isle Gear
0 Bonkers
BTW: In the screenshot you'll see first a 76 Timeless Coin received. Those were NOT from a cache but from a rare mob I killed just before entering the Grotto. It was Spelurk if anyone is interested killing him and then try your luck?

I hate these things.
Rant incoming: THEY NEVER DROP. Best thing I can say is either farm up 50k coins to purchase one or go to the monkey chest cave and gamble them. Either way, don't expect many Burdens from dropping off mobs. Farmed Timeless Isle with my shaman for weeks now, and the only burdens I've gotten were from the monkey chests, the Archerus quest turn in and the Blazing Chest on the top of the Ordon Sanctuary.
That said, you are better off just getting enough ilvl to LFR and go that route to get geared.

Some crude math to help you decide whether to buy burdens or keys for the timeless chests. This is taking a pure numbers approach. I think the rare numbers are unrealistic. Please check my numbers.
Timeless Chest
Coins 500
Drop Rate 0.60%
Coins per Burden
83,333
Rare Elite Drop
Number of Rares 27
Average Spawn Rate 60
Rares per Minute 2.2
Average Burden Drop Rate 3%
Minutes per Burden
74.1
Based on this, you farm elites and buy burdens at 50,000 when you can. Your luck may vary of course.

Ty all, for your previous notes, and I noticed much of it was at the time of 5.4.0 and nothing more recent. I personally did not know about having to use the Burden of Eternity on a BOA cache, and did the mistake of making cloaks to get the one I wanted upgraded. I was far beyond ilvl on all my gear for 535 except my cloak. So I went to the cave hoping to use Kukuru's Cache Key to get a cloak to use with my Burden of Eternity I got from the Burning Chest. With only a cloak in mind I took 19,500 coins and bought nothing but keys
I found one chest that was a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, a very close replica indeed and sat there opening that same chest over and over. I was there for about an hour due to getting so many coins back, and using them to buy more keys. Here is my little list of loot.
1 BOA cloak, took forever
2 Burden of Eternity
2 Bonkers BOP companion pet
1 Timeless Curio
1 Timeless Plate Spaulders
1 Timeless Mail Spaulers, 1 Mail Chestpiece,
1 Timeless Mail Bracers, 2 Mail Gloves, 1x Mail Belt
2 Timeless Leather Belt, 1 Leather Boots
1 Timeless Cloth Leggings, 1 Cloth Boots
So that was the loot, starting with 19,500 coins. To anyone that may be curious, I was a Fury Warrior, Plate wearer.

I spent around 22,000 timeless coins on the chests, (Plus the amount that was earned back) and I was dropped:
- 17 armor tokens (6 of which I could use)
- 3 bonkers
- A chest with 1 timeless coin in it...
- 0 burdens
I feel like Blizz did nerf the burden drop chance from the chest, when they nerfed the mob drop chance. I was able to get 4 from the first time I did it, (Using 14,000 timeless) but now it seems that they WANT players to save up that 50k timeless to get it instead of taking the easier gamble.
Happy hunting, and may the RNG gods be on your side.

Wall o text incoming.
Just to add my my two timeless coins into this regarding Kukuru's gambling chests. Over the course of a week, I've spent about 45k on keys. I've netted 3 burdens. It's disheartening to grind out 12k coins with nothing but bonkers and armor tokens, but, overall, the investment is still better than 50k on one burden from vendor. RNG is RNG, though, and your results may vary significantly.
Case in point, on one attempt, I spent 1500 coins for 3 keys and got a burden on the 3rd key, then spent 12k more coins (plus the returned coinage) and got nothing but random tokens or more coins.
I've been trying a two chest only technique where I pick two chests near Kukuru, a small chest (which I've noticed that small chests seem to have a better yield of burdens... or I might be over thinking things) and a medium ches,t then open them one at a time, buying single keys each time. I use the "NPC will spawn with it's intended loot at that time" line of reasoning hoping to "force" a burden to spawn inside a chest, as it were. So far, all three burdens I got were from the small chest. Might just be coincedence.
On a different note, I wonder how they assign burden drop rates to the Rares. Better chance to get it on the first kill you make on that rare in a day, or just first kill on anything in that day with Rares having the highest chance (increasing with the Rare itself)? Take this with a grain of salt but this is what I've noticed in the week of actually paying attention to when I'm killing things. My first kill on the summoned Archie of Flame in a day yielded both the XP elixir and Burden. He happened to be my first rare kill that day, too (though I don't recall if I had killed any other normal elite or normal mob before him). Other days, I just get coins from him if I've already killed any rares that day. Subsequently, I tagged the Dread Ship as my first rare, and first kill, period, of the day on a different day and got a Burden. Otherwise, if I've already killed something (like evermaw before the ship) I just get 800-1k coins. I also got a burden on my first kill of Zhu-Gon at the skunky brew event, but again, he was my first kill of the day when I logged in. Any other time, I only get coins if I've already killed a Rare that day (like the Emerald Gander).
However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, today I tagged the Champions of the Black flame on my way to the Sha of Repairs (Cinderfall) and they only dropped 300+ coins, even though they were my first kill of the day on the isle. And there have been other days where I've only killed ganders first and no burdens. So I may have just had really good luck with RNG on the other kills, or it may be based on the Rare itself (all three of the ones I've listed where I got a burden on the first kill of the day require something else to happen in order for them to spawn, so maybe the rates are better for them?) Who knows besides Blizzard, and they aren't telling.
UPDATE: Since the time of this post, I've been killing every rare I can manage to get to (sometimes the same one several times throughout a day) and it took until yesterday to finally get the last burden I wanted. I still see better than average results (more coins at the worst outcome) on my first kill of each Rare a day on the Isle, but I seems my theory of the increased chance of a Burden may have just come down to hitting the best dice roll on their RNG table those times.

When I needed/wanted Burdens of Eternity they were the rarest things. Now that they are useless to me, they drop SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much. I have 19 Burdens (grinding exalted with Shoa) sitting in the bank with no way to ever use them. They should really be BOA so I can ship them to alts.

Make sure that if you are going to use this, you use it on the token
BEFORE
you create your loot item. Otherwise, your item is going to be level 496, and you can not upgrade it with the Burden of Eternity.

Does anyone know if I use Burden on my main character if I can mail the token to my alt, or does it instantly change the token to soulbound? Thanks

Has the Burden drop rate been considerably lowered? I've killed over sixty rares over the last 2 1/2 weeks and NO drops. Prior to that I was getting 1-2 burdens/week. This is very frustrating, and makes any more time spent on timeless isle a waste of time (time's up).

Id like too see the vendor price increased if they don't plan to make them BOA. 5g seems a little low for a decent rare drop.

For whatever the reason seems to be, these are not Bind on Account. This makes these items rather useless if you are farming on a character that cannot upgrade any gear with timeless pieces.

Maybe well wide of the mark here but...has anyone considered that Burden drop rates may reduce significantly as your iLvl increases? For example since hitting 540+.
For over a month or so now I've been 'farming' TI for a couple of these to see if I can upgrade 1 of the 2 sets of bracers I'm holding to a better stats spec, but have got absolutely zip. Kukuru's Cave, elites, rares...killed or opened hundreds of them. Now getting v. frustrated, I don't recall the rate being as low as this before.

I spent around 7000-8000 Timeless Coins and received two Burdens of Eternity form Kukuru as of 5.4. I have heard the drop chance has fluctuated over time, but if you're a gambler, with a little luck, anything can happen.

Im really hoping Blizzard makes these BoA. I tried for weeks to get one to drop for my main, and I kid you not, the exact week I out grew them, two drop and the next week another two drop. Now I have four Burdens just sitting in my bank.

i too think the drop rate is worse now. 3 months ago i got all that i needed. Now on my free upgrade toon i got one in 3 weeks of playing. In that time i have earned 50k coins . On my other toon i only had to buy one.
Is the trick to wear green gear so you seem needy? I just outfitted this one with timeless stuff i had saved in the bank.

My warrior had saved up 50,000 coins and I planned to buy his first Burden of Eternity from the vendor on Timeless Isle. Then I thought why not take my chances in the treasure chest cave? Sure, the Burdens are a low drop there, but let's take a chance. Am I glad I did! Instead of purchasing a single Burden, I gave all my coins to the hozen npc in the cave and ended up with FOUR Burdens, 3 rare pets, and 26 blue Timeless items including jewelry! I considered attending Gamblers Anonymous, but it was so worth it. I squealed and cheered each time a treasure chest yielded a Burden, and my kids were thinking, "Oh, no, Mom's reading her emails from the online dating service again." Money well spent!

I just bought 20 keys, no Burdens, one Bonkers, one Timeless cloth bracer, one Timeless mail gloves. The rest were coin loots as low as 1 single coin in a chest up to 550 coins. No more chest gambles for me.

So sadly it's official. Even though random drops and and random ratings after crafting the timeless items the
不朽之责
will just remain soulbound even though it drops for characters who already have better gear and even more though despite the fact that this would be a great dump for
永恒铸币
So instead of making the random random useless and coinspam all less of a bad design by changing this to binds to account it'll stay that way.

In MoP after they nurfed the drop rate and tried to adjust it they seemed to have twisted the drop rate. When I was undergeared I rarely got them at all but when I didn't need them I got them off rares often. For those who are still interested in gearing a new 90 from my experience farming coins and buying 20-40 keys will almost guarantee a drop, as level 110 farming ordos sanctuary and nearby rares I have not come across one burden

Why in the name of all that is WoW are these things still soulbound... considering normal 496 TI gear is BoA? Isn't it about time this was changed so at least alts are able to use them to improve BoA items? Sure, make them soulbound once they've been used, but surely on looting they can be BoA?

Bizarrely, in 10.1.7 I was able to use a Burden of Eternity on a
拜荒者板甲胸甲
. Or, more accurately, I was able to
start
using it on that. Since I did not want to consume my Burden of Eternity (as I am trying to be a completist about the transmog of the upgraded Timeless gear tokens), I did not let the cast complete. But it started casting "Eternity's Embrace" just as if I'd used it on a Timeless piece (unlike the "Create Chestpiece" cast that happens when you use the Primalist token by itself).
Now I'm really curious what the result would have been. My best guess is that it would have created the same piece of gear as if the Primalist token had been a Timeless token. Maybe if there is someone out there who doesn't care about conserving Burdens of Eternity, they can experiment and find out.

If you are an obsessive ATT collector and want to learn all the items (not just all the appearances but every item), here is what I found to be the most efficient way to do it. Basically what you need to do is open timeless gear tokens
with and without using a
不朽之责
for every role/armor type combination (sort of; see below). Start by prioritizing the items that require
不朽之责
, then use the leftover gear tokens to get the rest.
Bring each character you have to the Timeless Isle.
Characters that haven't been there before should go there via
永恒岛之旅
or
永恒岛之旅
. Others should just fly.
Obtain some timeless gear tokens.
Usually it's enough just to open
阴燃宝箱
and
阴燃宝箱
, but you can open other treasures and kill elites and rares for chances at others. You need at least one that is usable by your current character and which ATT tells you can become an unlearned item
with a
不朽之责
.
Open
炽燃宝箱
, which has a guaranteed
不朽之责
in it.
If you got the legendary cloak during MoP, getting there is straightforward: go to the broken bridge via Firewalker Ruins and The Blazing Way, approach the gap, and you'll sail over. If you didn't, you can still get there, but it's more complicated. See the comments on
炽燃宝箱
for more information.
Use the
不朽之责
on a Timeless gear token for which you still need to learn an item.
Observe the guidelines below to make sure you get an unlearned item and not a previously learned one.
Save unused gear tokens for now.
Trade the ones your current character can't use to characters who can.
Once you've cycled through all your characters, you have two possible paths forward. Mix and match as you please.
Path 1: Trial Characters
This way is the fastest. Create trial characters, bring them over to the Timeless Isle, and repeat the above steps. Then delete the character. Repeat until you've learned everything.
Notes:
There are hourly and weekly limits on how many trial characters you can create, so you'll have to do this in stages.
Unfortunately you can't mail gear tokens to alts from trial characters, but you can mail gear tokens
to
your trial character if you want.
Once you've used your
不朽之责
, open any other tokens your trial character can open without one
(according to the opening rules below)
before deleting the character.
If ATT indicates unlearned gear off the Celestial world boss, might as well kill that on your trial character before you delete it.
Path 2: Grind Rep to Honored
For each (non-trial) character, grind
皇帝少昊
rep to Honored AND obtain 50,000
永恒铸币
. You'll be able to get two more guaranteed
不朽之责
via
烈焰祭司阿克鲁斯
and by purchasing one from
织雾者艾莉
. Really you only need about 45,000
永恒铸币
, because once you reach Honored you'll get quests that take you the rest of the way. If you do the grind right, you'll reach Honored and 45,000 coins right around the same time. Once you've gotten these additional two
不朽之责
, successive burdens will be few and far between, so switch to a different character.
This way is slower but lets you obtain other things along the way, including a stockpile of timeless gear tokens that will ensure you never get stuck on that part of the process. It's also (somewhat) less boring.
Notes:
Complete the questline that starts with
永恒岛之旅
or
永恒岛之旅
and continues with
时间在你手中
,
末代皇帝
,
永恒精魄
,
天神悟道圣坛
,
驱退烈焰
, and
烈焰祭司阿克鲁斯
.
Actually, do all the quests you can find on the Timeless Isle, as these reward
永恒铸币
more quickly than you can grind them.
One of the quests will reward you a
永恒板甲宝箱
,
永恒锁甲宝箱
,
永恒皮甲宝箱
, or
永恒布甲宝箱
. These yield a random item that you'd normally get from a gear token
without
a
不朽之责
. Open them the way you'd normally open a Timeless gear token (making sure to observe the opening rules below).
Kill yaungol mobs for the rest of the rep and coins you need. This goes fastest if you kill mobs in and around the Ordon Sanctuary (don't go in the square part unless you did the MoP legendary cloak questline back in the day). Grind the Blazing Way if you need to fill time between respawns.
Kill rares you run across, as these drop coins, tokens, and just maybe a bonus
不朽之责
.
Observe the guidelines below to make sure you get an unlearned item and not a previously learned one.
Token Opening Rules
It's important to set your
loot spec
(not your actual spec) appropriately before opening a gear token.
If you don't observe these rules when opening tokens (with or without a
不朽之责
), you're liable to get a gear item you've already learned.
Currently, both Wowhead and ATT are wrong about which specs will receive which gear items!
Plate Tokens:
Elder Tortoiseshell
- set loot spec to Tank
Everbright
- set loot spec to Healer
Cliffbreaker
- set loot spec to DPS
Mail Tokens:
Ordon Legend-Keeper
- set loot spec to Healer
Crimsonscale
- set loot spec to DPS
Leather Tokens:
Fire-Chanter
- set loot spec to Intellect
Cranefeather
- set loot spec to Agility
Cloth Tokens:
Amaranthine
- all Priest specs
Cloudscorcher
- all Mage and Warlock specs
Cloak Tokens:
Warmsun
- set loot spec to Agility
Elder Tortoiseshell
- set loot spec to Strength*
Cliffbreaker
- set loot spec to Strength*
Kiln-Stoker
- set loot spec to Intellect*
Amaranthine
- set loot spec to Intellect*
*For Strength and Intellect cloaks, you can't control which one you get. You just have to hope you get the one you need.
