OOX-22/FE Distress Beacon - Feralas
OOX-22/TN Distress Beacon - Tanaris
OOX-22/HL Distress Beacon - Hinterlands
You get the beacons off random mobs in the area, and then go find the mechanical chicken its attached to. You then have to lead the chicken to the coast so it can return home. After that you go to Booty Bay and talk to Oglethorpe Obnoticus to complete the quest. (the internet could have good guides on these quests) When you've completed all three quests, Oglethorpe gives you the mechanical chicken as a reward.
As mentioned before the chicken is BOE, so can be sold in the AH. He's kind of an unusual pet though, and lots of people ask about him.

I myself wish I had sold him...he is a tiny little pet and I didn't even think he was active until I was on the beach and could finally see him (his coloration and size camouflage him into the background)...if he could fight like that mechanical greench he would be so much more worth all the headaches of those three escort quests....
Sell him on the AH for the 9G!

Today in Trade someone was asking for an engineer to make one of these.
I whispered and said it's not a crafted item, and he insisted he was a 450 eng and ought to know what engineers can make. I happen to agree, he SHOULD know, but somehow didn't.
I tried to whisper that the chicken is a quest reward.

Just so that people know on EU servers, I followed Acetylcholine's link to the US forums and then set up a similar post on the EU forums.
The response was not to give you which quests you still needed, but to confirm that you can ask an In-Game GM for the information. They can only tell you which of the three you have completed.
This also confirms that blacktauren's help from a GM wasn't a fluke! :)
Here is the

.
Here's the Blizz reply....
Hi there Awden,
I see no reason why we cannot give this information to you. For assistance with your query please submit a ticket to us in-game, and a member of the Game Master team should be able to look this up for you and give you an answer.

You can ask a GM if you have completed the quests. After I gave the GM the exact quest names, he told me I had indeed not completed any of them. I did over 20 full ZF clears, after no luck I moved on to Hinterlands. Got that one in about 3 clears of Jintha'alor and then spent 5 hours farming gnolls in Feralas with no drop.
Eventually I decided to stop and just go turn in the one I did complete at Booty Bay. Npc promptly gave me my mech chicken.... so it turns out I did do all but one. So I guess moral of the story, you can ask a GM, but they might not tell the truth ^_^
So I suppose if you aren't sure which you have completed, and just aren't getting a drop move to another zone or turn in whatever one(s) you already have. Just to be sure.

Since the vanity pet achievements came out, these things sell for 1500g+ at the auction house. Which isn't unreasonable, considering you have to have a level 45+ character and farm three distress beacons in order to get one (the escort quests themselves are pretty easy).
Here's how to complete the chicken escort quests without dying and/or failing. I have done these on three characters now, which is why I said they are easy, but the first few times I did one it was a pain. First thing you need to know is that the chicken moves FAST, only slightly slower than player run speed, and if he gets far enough in front of you, he will despawn and you will fail. Second thing is that the chicken usually does NOT turn around to help you if you get attacked, unlike typical escort NPCs. The net effect of these issues is that you must always let the chicken aggro the enemies first, whether they are wandering monsters or spawned ambushers, otherwise it will run off into the sunset and leave you to deal with the mobs. Since the chicken is kinda wimpy, ideally you should pull aggro off it right away (though it can tank one mob for a while if you need to drink or bandage). Once you see it emote something like "initializing attack plan beta", start killing. AOEs are very helpful but not needed if you switch targets on the 3+ mob ambush spawns. The hardest part of all these quests is the final gnoll ambush in Feralas, which happens on the road down to the docks. One of the mobs is a shaman and must be killed IMMEDIATELY, before he starts healing the others. Make sure you are at close to full health/mana before the ambush occurs, otherwise it can be quite difficult. Stunning abilities are very helpful here.
As far as farming the beacons, in my experience the drop rate is completely random. Sometimes it comes from your first few kills in a zone, sometimes you can finish every single quest and still not get it. My recommendation is to make sure you plan on questing in these zones as you level up -- many players skip the Hinterlands, especially on the Horde side, because it's hard to get to and a long way from any cities (not to mention that the quest hub is in the far southeast corner of the zone, at the bottom of a cliff -- bleh). But the Hinterlands is worth doing just to finish this quest. 1500 gold at level 45-50ish is nothing to sneeze at. Save it for your epic flyer!

The *easiest* way to escort the chicken for all of the quests is to run slightly ahead of the chicken (i'd say about 20-30yds), and picking up any mob that you think is close enough for the chicken (level 42) to aggro. You don't even have to dismount--just run left and right ahead of the chicken and the mobs will eventually go away since the chicken runs so fast. This way, the chicken doesn't stop to fight the mobs (it didn't get initial aggro), and as long as you don't get dazed, you won't either.

I assume blizz hopes that the price goes down, as you can simply make a DK get it to the prerequisite 58 to join the rest of the world, get the beacons, get the chicken and sell it, then delete your DK and make another. A few hours total of doing all the DK starter quests and getting the beacons for what is being reported here as upwards of 2k g+

So I recently noticed that Mechanical Chicken wasn't in my collection.
I wrote a ticket to a GM asking which quests I completed. He confirmed that I did all beacon quests as well as "An OOX of Your Own" long time ago.
Then I told him that the chicken was missing. He said that I probably sold or destroyed it and he only advised me to either buy one or get one on another character.
So I wrote another ticket, hoping for a better solution - this time suggesting from the start that it must be some kind of bug. This time a different GM told me right away that he'll reimburse me the chicken. So next thing I did was pick up the chicken from the mailbox :)

I just completed the third OOX escort quest and Oglethorpe didn't offer me "An OOX of your own" to get this pet. I opened a ticket and a GM confirmed that I'd done all three escorts. He then found that it was a "known issue", identified recently, that players completing the three escorts aren't being offered the final quest. A fix is expected Soon.

So I had fully completed one of the quests (the one in Feralas). I had started the one in Tanaris but failed. Now, I try to go back to re-do it, but I don't see it anywhere (even when turning on the low quest tracking). Is it a one-time chance thing? Or...am I just missing something?
edit
: Put in a ticket about it. GM informed me that: 1) I had, in fact, completed the Feralas quest; 2) There was no reason why the Tanaris quest didn't turn up, that maybe someone had just completed it or was currently on it; and 3) That I had not yet completed the one in Hinterlands.
I went back and sure enough, I was able to find the one in Tanaris using my low quest tracker.
Farmed for over an hour
all
over Hinterlands and still no drop of the beacon. Perhaps I will be going back sometime soon to try again, it just annoyed me to no end.

The Tanaris chicken does actually get up and leave it's original location, and does not respawn unless destroyed or the quest is finished. Seeing as how the Tanaris chicken is the longest of the three escorts, you can be waiting quite a while if someone activated it just before you got there.

My main had this already, so when my next alt who I wasn't too serious about managed to acquire all the beacons without really trying, I thought I'd try to sell it . . . be prepared to get jumped by people in Trade Chat who want to tell people "Don't buy that, it's a quest reward, and 500g is a rip off." The auction house, especially the neutral one, is probably the most hassle free way to unload this pet. I find pets go for considerably more on the Neutral Auction House than in my faction only one, possibly because people all too readily assume that the pet they see on there is from an Alliance Friendly Vendor and don't bother researching where it really comes from before they buy.
That said, considering you are selling off a character's chance to have the pet, plus the time running back and forth from all three zones to Booty Bay, plus how annoying escort quests are in general (MOVE FASTER, CHICKEN!), I'd say I put at least 500g of work into that stupid chicken, and that's assuming you got lucky and the things just dropped as opposed to actually putting in farm time.

Caused my own moral dilemma when I attempted to get this pet. My main had bought one off the auction house ages ago for about 200g when they first introduced the pet as a learned skill rather than something that took up bag space feature. When I realized the joy of unlimited pet space, I went and bought every reasonably priced pet on the auction house . . . I just do things like that.
Anyway, so my mage had it from an auction house purchase. Later my pally alt farmed one out and I sold it for about 500g on the auction house.
I had it in my head that I had already completed the Feralas escort quest on my mage, simply because I spent so much time there goofing off while working on my Loremaster achievement, so when I picked up the Hinterlands Beacon I assumed I needed to farm in Tanaris to get one more chicken for some easy gold. I was killing Tanaris pirates and wastewanders for Gadgetzan rep anyway, so I waited expectantly for my beacon to drop. And waited. And waited. After a few days, I thought, what could it hurt? I put in a ticket asking if I had already completed the Tanaris quest.
I was offline when the GM responded, so I didn't get to discuss it with the GM, but the response was that I had completed the Tanaris quest but not the Feralas one. "I cannot give you the pet on this character, but I noticed you completed it on your other character. . ."
Long story short, he sent me the mechanical chicken on my paladin. After some hesitation, I decided sending it back would be more trouble than it was worth, but I couldn't bring myself to sell it as intended, so I learned it on my paladin. Maybe I should've deleted it . . . oh well.

You can't truly calculate the real drop rate of the beacons because once you drop it the first time and either; a. have it in your inventory or; b. have completed the quest... the beacon will not drop again for you for the remainder of the time you spend in that particular zone.
Not sure why that quote got marked down, so I will quote it again in case it gets purged. Please don't mark down information that is correct. If you do not know, please do not vote.
OOX-09/HL
(HL = HinterLands)
OOX-17/TN
(TN = TaNaris)
OOX-22/FE
(FE = FEralas)
Check it out, they are unique (links provided for easy mouse-over access). Therefore you CAN NOT have more than one in your inventory (and they are BoP so you cannot put them in the guild bank) so if you have one, you can not get another one.
They do drop fairly often if you have not completed the quest (or toss them out), so if you have trouble finding one, double check that you didn't stash it in the bank while you were leveling in the 40s, or that you didn't finish it and forget (there are addons to check what quests you have and have not done yet,
Everyquest
for example)

You can check which OOX-quests you have done with a macro, so you don't have to bother GM's
First type this in-game:
/run f,z=CreateFrame('frame'),{='The Hinterlands',='Tanaris',='Feralas'};f:RegisterEvent('QUEST_QUERY_COMPLETE')
Then, type this
/run local s,t;f:SetScript('OnEvent',function() t=GetQuestsCompleted();for c,v in pairs(z) do if t then s='' else s=' not' end print('You have'..s,'found OOX in',v) end end);QueryQuestsCompleted()
No need to actually type them, you can use Control+C to copy and Control+V to paste in-game. This should tell you in your chat window which quests you're missing and which you've completed

It CAN drop, it CANNOT be looted. It does show in the loot box, it just cannot be looted being unique. I had 3 drop during my questing in the zone, but was only able to loot the first one, so the drop rate is fairly accurate, as far as registering. Don't believe me? Go try it. I've done this half a dozen times now. Sells for about 1000g, give or take 500. They'll be even rarer now since leveling is so fast, there's really no need to quest in all three of these zones as you level. You have to make a special effort to fly around and get it, and it can take hours of grinding if you're unlucky.
Tenaris seems to be the worst. Running through ZF usually does the trick ... usually. Hinterlands it drops pretty easy from a lot of different mobs, I did owlbeasts and that worked out. In Feralas it drops like crazy from the Yeti (111% drop rate on wowhead, not sure how that is possible?)
If you keep it, it is a super cool pet. The squeaky chicken squaks are awesome. Good luck!

I had to redo the Feralas beacon, finished it and handed in the quest at Booty Bay. I did not get the follow up quest 'An OOX of Your Own' which gives you the chicken pet. I put in a ticket and the GM told me that it's bugged and the quest should have shown up. So they mailed me my mechanical chicken.
But this was a little strange. They then said for me to learn the pet because they didn't want to get fired for me putting it on the AH. Of course that part was a joke, but he said I still had to learn it. If not he would take it away. So I learned it. Asked if it was possible to get the beacons again and get the chicken and he said no.
So take it for what it's worth. It is now a one time quest. At least that's what I was told.

Reading comments on here, I thought to myself, "Surely this must be mistaken. Surely there's no way you can sell these things for so much.". However, as I'm in the process of leveling a new character on a server that I have no high levels on, I also figured that it couldn't hurt to quest in the areas that drop the beacons and see what happens.
Feralas and Tanaris both dropped their beacons for me during regular questing. Hinterlands, I had to farm a bit, perhaps an hour or so grinding turtles. But since I'm also a skinner, I made a tidy profit on that while farming.
I listed my chicken for 4500g. I didn't expect it to sell at nearly that price(perhaps 2000g, but 4500g? not a chance!), but I figured it was worth a shot. When I woke up and checked my auctions, the AH listed it as having just sold.
I'm starting to think maybe I lowballed myself there.

To get this small (BoU) mech chicken, you need to get three rare drops in different areas, then do the correspending quests, then travel again to Booty Bay. Finally you get an Oox of your own, which can be sold to other players. Only 1 can be obtained per toon. Taking all this into account, you should be able to get more than wowhead and even players suggest.

After a week and a half of research and working the quest lines i finally figured it out so i hope this post save you some time.
These items still drop for lower level characters from what i have seen, but for two of these if you are level 85 you can just pick up the quests directly from the mechanical chicken.
00X-17/TN - can be found in Tanaris in the mountains about 61, 63 for the cords put your low level quest tracker on and you will find him.
00X-22/FE - is in the cave with the Yeti so you have to run inside and about mid way through the cave it opens up and he is laying on the ground once again make sure you turn your low level qeust tracker on.
00X-09/HL - is still on the hill in hinterlands but this piece of the quest actually has to be farmed for the beacon i killed oozes and a bunch of other mobs for several days and with no luck, i finally went to Jintha'alor and killed the trolls up there for about 15 min and the beacon dropped for the quest line cords are 61, 73.
All quests must be completed and turned into booty bay in order for you to get your pet. Happy collecting everyone.

This pet will not fly around with you when mounted, unlike
Feline Familiar
. Which is weird since the mechanical chicken activates it's rocket boosters and flies to Booty Bay after the each escort quest is complete.

Confirmed that all three beacons required for this quest reward still drop as of 5.0.4.

If you got lost and not sure what you did, or have to do, use this macro to figure out where you currently stand:
/run local z={"Tanaris","Hinterlands","Feralas"}for k,v in pairs({{351,648},{485,836},{25475,25476}})do print(z)for i,q in pairs(v)do print(" #"..i,"\124Hquest:"..q.."\124h\124h",IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(q)and COMPLETE or INCOMPLETE)end end

Just completed the final quest and received the 'Mechanical Chicken' I was able to mail to to another toon on my account. I was also able to trade it with the same toon and also to a character on another account (not linked) So it is tradeable.
Once learnt, the pet is not cageable however.
The Quick Facts above mention it is Account-wide however it does not mention this in the Tooltip.

Older post but felt the need to comment. CHECK YOUR ALTS! After farming for a few hours on my main, a warrior, I decided that a mage, with a bunch of instant cast spells, would be better for farming so many low lvl mobs. So I switched toons and low and behold the mage had all 3 of the beacons found already and never escorted. I mainly attribute this to the fact that i was trying to gather these quest prior to all toons having all pets. So, run the macro
/run local z={"Tanaris","Hinterlands","Feralas"}for k,v in pairs({{351,648},{485,836},{25475,25476}})do print(z)for i,q in pairs(v)do print(" #"..i,"\124Hquest:"..q.."\124h\124h" ,IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(q)and COMPLETE or INCOMPLETE)end end
on all toons and make sure one isnt ahead of the other.

This is a very valuable pet on the auction house. It can be a real pain in the butt sometimes getting any one beacon because of it being a zone drop.
Worth it in the end, and you get a ton of experience from turning the quests in.

A warning, if you farm this to sell on the AH, DO NOT LEARN IT. It cannot be caged and traded or sold.

I attempted to complete this quest in 6.2.3 it gave me the error "you do not meet the requirements for this quest". I was able to close the window out and speak with Oglethorp again and was able to complete this quest. FYI the Mechanical Chicken is exactly the same as the Robo-Chick both in appearance and battle pet abilities. The breed of mechanical chicken that I got was Power/Speed and I already had a Power/Speed robo-chick. The mechanical chicken will always be P/S from what petbreed ID addon says and the robo-chick has multiple breeds possible so if you don't have an uncommon robo-chick it is worth doing this quest. I felt accomplished after getting the mechanical chicken though. I wanted one in vanilla but never got to play very far into the content.

I would like to mention if you were planning on selling the chicken and you accidentally used the item (chicken) received from the gnome then you can't put it in a cage like you could many other pets.
Additionally, Blizzard simply refuse to reimburse you for some bogus reasons, SO DON'T USE THE ITEM IF YOU PLAN ON SELLING IT.

With the introduction of Shadowlands, the script to run checks on quest completion has been deprecated. I have updated the script to work for Shadowlands.
/run local z={"Tanaris","Hinterlands","Feralas"}for k,v in pairs({{351,648},{485,836},{25475,25476}})do print(z)for i,q in pairs(v)do print(" #"..i,"\124Hquest:"..q.."\124h\124h",C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(q))end end
