Venthyr Assassination Rogue Covenant Abilities
Venthyr Rogue Class Ability:
The Venthyr Class Ability for Rogues of all specializations is
. This ability is a pretty interesting addition to the class toolkit that is inspired by the
trinket.
The first time you use it, it will lash out dealing shadow damage against the target three (or more with a conduit) times and apply a debuff on the target that stacks with each lash. While the debuff is up for 20s, it will continue to lash and stack for each combo point you spend (on any target), up to a cap of 30. If you reach the stack cap, it will still lash for damage but not continue to stack up further.
While the debuff is up on an enemy, using Flagellation again will now cause it to convert all of the debuff stacks into stacks of a buff on you. This buff will increase your Haste by 0.5% per stack, up to a maximum of 15%.
Should the target die with the debuff up, it will automatically do the buff conversion. However, if you miss converting and the debuff expires naturally after 20s, you won't be able to get the Haste buff. So the main thing to pay attention to with this ability is not to miss conversions and use it again just before the debuff expires.
The cooldown of the ability starts as soon as you use it the first time to apply the debuff.
This is a fine single target / priority focused class ability. As with all Covenant class abilities, it only has a low numerical impact overall, making everything rather close in comparison.
The corresponding conduit that modifies this ability is
, which increases the number of initial lashes as well as the damage of all lashes.
Venthyr Rogue Signature Ability:
The ability to create a
sounds cool, but can be a bit underwhelming. This is mostly due to the fact that it has a 1.5s cast time (in which you can already cross a fair part of the maximum distance just by running), so that Door of Shadows becomes only a secondary movement cooldown in our toolkit. It has its uses but does not impress very much alongside
and
and in comparison to the other Covenant signature abilities.
Some soulbind traits can modify this and add additional facets to the ability. Nothing makes it impressive.
Legendary Interactions for Venthyr Assassination Rogues
There are no noteworthy legendary interactions that should affect this covenant and soulbind choice or what legendary you want to target.
Venthyr Assassination Rogue Soulbinds
Across all classes and specs, Venthyr have access to the same three soulbinds:
Nadjia the Mistblade
,
Theotar the Mad Duke
and
General Draven
. They are the NPCs with whom you complete the zone story, and they allow you to "attune" yourself to them to gain access to a tree of upgrades centered around your base toolkit (through Conduits) and Covenant abilities (through special game-wide traits).
These trees progressively unlock based on completion steps (such as finishing the campaign) and your Renown level with the Venthyr Covenant.
We've summarized the optimal traits for each soulbind below, along with potential conduits to slot in, below. Do bear in mind that these recommendations are based on a PvE DPS perspective. You have every right to adjust your soulbind trees to your and your group's own needs. If you have an incentive to pick a utility or survivability option instead of throughput traits, don't let this guide stop you from doing so.
Nadjia the Mistblade grants you these important traits:
is a fair initial power and the best single target "top of the tree" power in this Covenant.
is an interesting priority damage trait that, according to simulations, is worth the sacrifice of the second Potency conduit on the last row.
is also a damage increase; however, in terms of damage gained compared to the alternate paths, it does not seem to be worth the pick, unless for some reason you want the Endurance conduit.
An example tree to follow on this soulbind is as follows.
Theotar the Mad Duke provides a couple of interesting nodes:
is a DPS-increasing trait that you can get early on. For Single Target, it is not as strong as Nadjia's alternative, but the Mastery is great for content with AoE. It requires you to stand in a specific spot, however.
is an interesting trait where I really recommend running a personal simulation to see if it is worth taking instead of the second Potency conduit. It can very well be or not be worth it, depending on what you have available at what rank.
has numerically not been impressive in simulations as it is too rare of a gain. Unless you desire the FInesse conduit, the other paths are probably better.

General Draven grants access to the following notable traits:
can be an interesting choice when you get to interrupt very often. This may or may not be an option for dungeons if you feel comfortable with it.
is a potentially powerful damage increase. If you can stay above 50-80% health for most of the time, the gain from this trait should be the best in the final row. During progress and whenever you have to deal with regularly incoming heavy damage then you may want to go for one of the other paths though.

Best Venthyr Assassination Rogue Early Soulbind
Early on in Shadowlands PvE group content, assuming you picked Venthyr, you will likely want
Nadjia the Mistblade
mainly because
is good and further notable increases require higher Renown unlocks. We want to make sure we get one Potency conduit slot and otherwise, it's pretty much set in stone, at the start.
Best Venthyr Assassination Rogue Soulbind at High Renown
As we unlock the full trees,
Nadjia the Mistblade
continues to be the best Raid / Single Target soulbind thanks due to
. As an alternative to Nadjia for Dungeons, you can instead choose
Theotar the Mad Duke
to benefit from
(assuming you can stand in it often enough, otherwise Nadjia may be more convenient). Here, we have a build that focuses a bit more on AoE damage with
so you can choose Nadjia for Dungeons with smaller AoE and pulls and Theotar for more AoE.

You can use Flagellation pretty much on cooldown to apply the lashing debuff. Let it stack up as far as you can and then make sure you get the conversion by using it again right before the debuff expires after 20 seconds.
Due to the slow pacing of the spec it is not very likely you will make it to the maximum of 30 stacks. That is fine, don't worry about it.
There is not much to be said about Door of Shadows rotationally. Use it at will when you need the teleport and/or the modified effects from your active soulbind. Keep in mind that it has a 1.5s cast time, so you may not want to use it when you can attack a target instead.

Your talent build does not change when picking this covenant. There is no special interaction with our kit and no reason to deviate from what build you are already choosing anyway. You can simply refer to the talent page of the guide for more information on talents.

Being part of the Venthyr covenant does not really affect your gearing strategy or your stat priorities. As usual, we encourage you to sim yourself, and to also consider that, for generic play, the primary stat Agility provided by item level upgrades typically outweighs "better" secondary stats.
