What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Recommended Essence Setup
These are the general Essence Setups. You may switch them out as needed when special situations occur. Please note that all Essence recommendations are based on rank 3, and in some cases, a worse rank 3 Essence may perform better than a better Essence at rank 2.
If you need the corruption resist then you can swap out the last slot for a corruption minor, but if you don't need to then they aren't a requirement.

In general, you will go for the offensive setup, but if your healers struggle or you don't want to add an extra button to your rotation, you can use
. The only difference between the two is the major essence, because
is our best minor overall, with close to 100% uptime on a high amount of versatility.
provides approximately 3000 HPS and DPS when procced on cooldown. As there is consistent magic AoE in raid, that makes it one of the stronger consistent choices.
should have close to 100% uptime on the haste and agility proc due to the number of raid members activating their major essences at different times.

In Mythic+, your Essence setup will vary depending on your own comfort level, what talents you are playing, and what your group composition looks like.
For doing the most damage,
has the highest potential if someone in your group is using
. However, be aware that dodge and parry do not work while casting or channeling, so you need to CC or kite the mobs while channeling. For slightly less risk and more ST focused damage, go with
. When playing the
build, these are the preferred options.
is the default when playing
as it provides approximately 0.952 real procs per minute of a 5.75 second long
which extend current durations. Avoid using this with
when possible. If you need more survival you would switch talents before Essence.
is used in cases where you need snap threat. Some examples of this are during
week, or when running with a Fire Mage or Unholy Death Knight. The major effect is a true taunt rather than a fixate, so you will gain the full threat and threat bonus like regular taunt, but in AoE.
is our strongest minor in general for Mythic+, reducing the cooldown of
from 3 minutes to 2:15 at
level 85 or higher. You will always use this as either major or minor and pull around the cooldown.
is another minor you will always use, as it provides nearly 100% uptime on a large Versatility bonus, assuming you do not wait between pulls often.
is also excellent, as it provides 100% uptime on a large amount of haste. Note that you only need rank 1 of this Essence, as Rank 2 increases duration by 2 seconds and rank 3 increases movement speed.
is a strong third minor option on weeks when you can pull big, or when stacking Versatility. The amount of Versatility gained changes dynamically with the number of enemies nearby. On average, you need 6-7 enemies for equivalent stats to
or
.
is the best choice when you need corruption if you aren't using one as a major. However, it has a few requirements that may cause you not to take it. It does not activate off passive majors, and the buff duration is short, so you need someone running
or your group staggering their majors for high uptime.
is your corruption resist minor when you do not meet the requirements for
.
Best Vengeance Demon Hunter Major Essences
You can only have one Major power slotted at a time. You also gain the minor benefit from that Essence. This means that both Major and Minor powers should be considered when deciding on your Major slot. Below is a ranking of the essences split up into three categories. The list is rough order from top to bottom, however there may be times that others are used in very specific situations.
Top tier essences are those that you will absolutely want to have at your disposal. They provide best in class performance in their particular roles, and should be the priority for obtaining at Rank 3.

Rank 2: Neck level 54 and
.
Rank 3: Neck level 60 and
.
Rank 4: Neck level 70 and
.
Use for: Single target DPS
This is the strongest ST DPS Essence. Avoid using the charges as a heal, as you will heal more by using souls.
Effect on gameplay
Keep at least one charge on cooldown and try to save charges for buff windows.

Rank 1: Defeat King Mechagon.
Rank 2:
from King Mechagon and craft
.
Rank 3: Combine 4
, dropped by King Mechagon.
Rank 4: Obtain
.
Use for: Survival Increase
This essence activates
. It has a significantly lower proc rate than
. This is used as a major in conjunction with the Gluttony build due to other essences that would be used in the major slot having less synergy, and worse minor effects.
Effect on gameplay
The main gameplay change is that you will have random procs of
, similar to how
works. The actual gameplay doesn't really change.
Mid tier essences either provide a specific situational use, or are weaker than the top tier essences but make suitable alternatives.
-

Rank 1: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 2: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 3: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 4: N'zoth Mythic Drop.
Use for: Mythic+, AoE DPS
This allows you to take someone else's major essence slot. It is extremely powerful when someone in your group is using
.
Note: You cannot dodge or parry while casting or channeling this! Make sure you are out of range of mobs while using.
Effect on gameplay
The minor is decent and is one of the new essences that provides a bonus 10 Corruption Resistance. You will have to be thinking about positioning when using this.
-
Source: Horrific Visions of N'zoth (click for details!)
Rank 1: Thrall or Alleria's Cursed Chests.
Rank 2: Corrupted Chests from the Lost Areas
Rank 3: Corrupted Chests from the Corrupted and Lost Areas
Rank 4: Obtain
.
Use for: Snap Threat,
in Mythic+
Taunts all nearby enemies, increases dodge chance by 15%, and increases your damage dealt to affected targets by 50% for 6 seconds. It is extremely useful when you need immediate threat or when playing with classes that pull aggro in AoE situations often..
Effect on gameplay
Try to pull larger when the cooldown on this is available, to take advantage of the window.
Bottom tier essences are much weaker than the alternatives and provide little or no specific utility. A very compelling reason would be needed to select one of these essences over another choice on the list.
-
Source: Reputation Rajani (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete Quest
Rank 2: First of the week Vision of Darkness
Rank 3: Rajani - Exalted
Rank 4: Rajani - Paragon Cache
Use for: Cheat Death
This has a long cooldown, so it will most likely not see general play.
Effect on gameplay
This provides you an extra life, but is on an extremely long cooldown. We already have a Cheat Death talent, and there aren't any situations where you'd need 3 lives, especially with the 10 minute cooldown.

Rank 1:
.
Rank 2:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 3:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 4:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Use for: Kiting for Necrotic and general Mythic+
The slow on this is strong for Mythic+ mainly. It helps when you need to kite, especially on Necrotic weeks. The reduced auto attack speed also helps with the latter, but it is still worse than other majors.
Effect on gameplay
Use it as a slow for kiting or dealing with Necrotic.

Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18
.
Rank 3: Combine 27
.
Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Use for: Tank buster mechanics in raid
This essence is decent at providing an extra cooldown on a short cooldown. There are currently no situations like that, so it is never chosen.
Effect on gameplay
This has a short duration, so use it as close to the timing of the tank buster as possible.
This works best when making a cooldown rotation.
-
Source: Rustbolt Resistance Reputation (click for details!)
Rank 1: Honored, purchase for 4
and 2
.
Rank 2: Revered, purchase for 20
and 10
.
Rank 3: Exalted, purchase for 40
and 10
.
Rank 4: Rustbolt Resistance Paragon cache.
Use for: Dispelling debuffs
The absorb itself is not that beneficial. It is fairly small and will fall off quickly. The main benefit is that it can clear debuffs, providing a decent dispel in specific scenarios. There are currently no situations where this would be useful.
Effect on gameplay
Use it when you need to dispel specific effects.
-
Source: PvP - Conquest (click for details!)
Rank 1: Earn 500 Conquest and claim a weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 2: Reach 1,000 Rating in Rated PvP and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 3: Collect
from your weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 4: Reach Elite rank and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
This provides
. The dispel works the same way as healer magic dispel. The main benefit from this is the amount of Versatility gain. Due to our constant ability to interrupt and utilize sigils, the double versatility can have a higher uptime than most specs. It is currently rather lackluster and not taken.
Effect on gameplay
This doesn't change gameplay, except that you want to dispel and interrupt more often.
-
Source: Mythic+ (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete a +4 Mythic dungeon.
Rank 2: Complete a +7 Mythic dungeon.
Rank 3: Combine 15
from the weekly cache.
Rank 4: Complete

Use for: Island Expeditions
This provides a burst of AoE DPS and a burst heal. The cooldown is long and the effects are worse than similar essences.
and
provide more DPS, while
provides better threat generation.
Effect on gameplay
You need to pull extremely large for this to have any value. Up to 20 enemies, this does less overall damage than
.

Rank 2: Combine

mission.
If other raid members use the minor then this becomes useless. This isn't enough stats to be worth the slot, and our kit does not rely on primary stat. In addition, you need to stay near the crystals in order to gain the buff.
Effect on gameplay
Movement is restricted.

Best Vengeance Demon Hunter Minor Essences
You can have up to three minor essences slotted. They provide only the minor benefit. Below is a ranking of the essences split up into three categories. The list is rough order from top to bottom, however there may be times that others are used in very specific situations.
Unless it is noted, minors are mainly passive effects with little to no gameplay changing effects.
-
Use for: Everything
Versatility is one of our strongest defensive and offensive stats. This essence provides nearly 100% uptime on a high amount, and you will always want this essence regardless of which build you are playing.
-
Use for: Magic damage encounters in raid
This essence's minor effect is also a passive version of its major effect and at rank 3 it gets a gigantic buff in damage making this our highest damage minor essence in raid. This is an extremely powerful minor essence and should be prioritized if you are a raider.
-
Use for: Mythic+
The minor is the main benefit you get when using this essence with Gluttony. It provides a small heal and the cooldown reduction allows you to pull big more often in Mythic+.
-
Use for: Mythic+
Provides an always up while tanking buff to haste. Also allows for easier kiting.
-
Use for: Mythic+
This provides a decent amount of Versatility in Mythic+ on weeks when you can pull large.
-
Use for: Corruption Resist, Raiding
Close to 100% uptime on Agility and Haste and one of the default minors in raid.
Used in Mythic+ only if your group is able to activate the minor consistently with
major or multiple staggered active majors.
-
Use for: Corruption Resist
The heal effect is often wasted since it only activates when you avoid an attack. The stamina buff is decent, but you only want to use this when you need the extra Corruption resist and cannot activate
-
Provides a small dps boost, but is beaten by other minors.
-
Use for: If your raid asks you to for other people's benefit
This works best when your raid is intentionally stacking this minor. It can provide a large amount of Agility.
-
Use for: Defensive purposes
Gives a small uptime on a Versatility buff and the refund on Pain is close to worthless for Vengeance.
-
Use for: High movement when other essences aren't available
You have to move a lot for this, making it useless in raid and extremely situational in Mythic+.
-
Use for: Other Essences aren't available
Provides a large amount of Armor, which scales badly compared to stats.
-
Use for: Never
The extra health is not only a small amount, but you lose the stacks at the time when you need it most. The health buff is removed before the damage is calculated, so in certain circumstances this can actually get you killed when you wouldn't have died otherwise. Avoid at all costs!

nice guide, but where do I go to get the specific essences? otherwise it's not very useful.

Lucid Dreams doesn't give Versatility, it refunds the pain still and it heals you instead.

Very well done guide. I critque is how you differentiate between DPS and Tank. There really isnt much. Listing the Essences they way that you have is a little confusing. They categorized by DPS spec and Tank spec.
